Perilstrike is angry that they put themselves in danger like that. He punishes the apprentices by having them stay in camp at all times outside training until the investigation patrol returns. He decides that Berryleap's injuries are punishment enough, at least until Cloudstar returns. Daisyspeckle and Fernspots are livid that their kits would go off endangering themselves like that. Meanwhile, Perilstrike takes a patrol to check if the fox followed their scents into their territory.

Perilstrike is a little uncomfortable doing ceremonies in Cloudstar's place when she's away, but Lightshower's kits are getting underpaw now more than ever after Coyotepaw, who had kept them busy, was out of the nursery. Knowing that they'd need good warriors to get through this uncertain period, Perilstrike decides to begin their training immediately. He gives Beechkit to Valleyshine and would have given Morningpaw to Thunderstrike, but the she-cat declined, admitting she was pregnant with Rex's kits. Through the congratulations by the queens, Perilstrike names himself Morningpaw's mentor instead.

Outside the territory, Sundapple's dreams begin to become clearer. She sees a vision FrostClan underneath a cloudy sky. When shadowy thorns begin to entangle the forest, the sky turns gray and stormy. Lighting strikes the trees and sets it ablaze but the rain clears it away. At first, the medicine cat was afraid there would be nothing left of their home but she sees that only the thorns turned to ash. As the sky above began to clear, she wakes up woth a jolt.

(I've been wondering where to go with the plot myself! I've just been throwing ideas out there so I'm glad that there might be some better direction now)
Berryleap has recovered from his wounds and is set to return to his regular duties. Meanwhile, Skateboard is insistent that Toadhop speak with StarClan that night and have him tag along. Trying to avoid a big fuss, the medicine cat agrees and is shocked to receive the same dream as Sundapple but from her mentor's eyes. It isn't as clear as it would have been had she gone along with the patrol but her mentor's voice was unmistakable from the garbled white noise of the dream. Skateboard confirms that he saw this same vision before, only in scrambled pieces. The two return to clan unsure of what the future holds and Toadhop prays that the investigation patrol return soon.

On the edge of the twolegplace, Sundapple recognizes the thorny plants as being similar to those in her dreams. Unsettled, the group continues onward. They don't get far before being set upon by a pair of dogs, but luckily Foxfoot remembers Mintfur teaching them that twoleg dogs rarely bother cats that aren't running and convinces the patrol to hold their ground. The dogs yap but though the Clan cats are on edge, they don't attack and eventually wander away. Owlsnow praises the young warrior on his quick thinking and the patrol moves on, more warily this time, but also emboldened by the encounter.

The patrol tries to ask around but kittypets and rogues realize they were from the forest and and avoid answering them. This instantly raises the patrol's suspicions. Sundapple eventually finds star-shaped puddles that she swears is a sign from StarClan. The trail leads them to one elderly kittypet who reveals that she was friends with Skateboard before he left. She allows them to stay in her yard while she explains that ever since a few months ago, cats have been disappearing and reappearing, sprouting mad dreams. One mysterious cat has been rounding them up and convinced everyone to listen to him a short time after Skateboard joined the clan.
