Cloudstar narrowly avoids getting crushed by falling rocks over on the rockier part of the territory. Wrengsong was not as lucky and ends up crushing her paw, leaving her recovering in the medicine cat den. It was deemed an accident but Sundapple can't help but recall the sign and warn the leader to be careful.

The halfmoon medicine cats meeting finally arrives and Toadhop is excited to get to see Mistleaf again. Sundapple is more reserved although she hopes that a visit to StarClan might let her understand what was going on - anything really to give her some clarity. Mistleaf is still the quiet tom he was but he greets the both of them warmly. While Toadhop catches him up to what her and her sisters have been up to, Sundapple eagerly enters a dream, hoping for some answers.

Sundapple was growing frustrated as the voices started to fade. Something garbled caught her ears - perhaps it was a name? She could not tell clearly. She woke up rather annoyed and wanted to return to camp quickly. Though it disappointed Toadhop to leave Mistleaf so soon, she quickly followed her mentor back to camp. When they return, Skateboard surprises them by retelling in detail the same dream Sundapple had. This only confuses the she-cat more.

Skateboard noticed that Sundapple was more frustrated than usual. The old tom asked her what was wrong, and Sundapple told him everything. Sundapple feels better now that she could talk to a cat about it. Skateboard tells her that he will try and meet with StarClan tonight because he has a strong connection to them.

The accusation that some cat in the Clan was causing a rift with StarClan caused an uproar that even the medicine cats couldn't quell, try as they might. The matter was quite divisive, with some cats, like Dawnstream and Weaseltooth, turning on the former rogues of the Clan, while others, like Perilstrike and Wrensong, believing it's Skateboard himself that should be expelled. Everyone is put into question whether they may be the reason for StarClan's distance, particularly those that have come in as outsiders at one time or another.

Cloudstar, not wanting history to repeat itself, says that it wouldn't make sense if it were the former rogues. Perilstrike has been serving as deputy for moons now and Rex and Steel had been contributing to the clan well. Skateboard too only seemed to want his visions to clear up - what motive would he have to want to sever their ties with StarClan? In the middle of the meeting, Toadhop slips away to visit FlameClan. She wants to ask Mistleaf if he had trouble speaking with StarClan too.

Fortunately, Patchstar was with the patrol and after Toadhop explains that she must speak with Mistleaf urgently about matters with StarClan, they escort her to the FlameClan camp. Patchstar is somewhat wary that FrostClan sent Toadhop instead of Sundapple for such an important task.

When at their camp, Mistleaf patiently listens to Toadhop about the issues her clan was facing. He looks confused and says that, aside from pretty average dreams, he wasn't facing anything particularly strange. Maybe a bit fuzzy when it comes to speaking with ancestors but nothing on the level that Sundapple was feeling. Mistleaf was warry of Skateboard though - he was a cautious tom after all. With little learned from that, Toadhop returns to camp a bit dejected that the answer wouldn't be easy to find, only for her to return to Owlsnow and Rex having a standoff over the growing tensions. Thankfully, no blood was drawn but Toadhop was afraid of any further escalation.

Treewind is found dead outside of camp. Some of the most vocal dissenters spread rumors of foul play, but the elderly she-cat was found curled in a clearing, evidently having passed peacefully in her sleep; the rumors finally die down once Cloudstar calls a meeting and even Dawnstream, who was there when they found Treewind, admitted there was no evidence and that they should respect their fallen elder for the time she'd spent serving the Clan.

Without the kind Treewind to mediate them, Mistycloud and Skateboard have been at odds in the elder's den. Mistycloud, having been very vocal against the rogues from the start, complains that Skateboard was mad as he often woke up from strange dreams. Sundapple and Toadhop decide to let the old tom sleep in the medicine cat's den instead, hoping that it might help all of them make sense of his visions.

Rex is distraught at Steel's disappearance. Having been longtime companions in their rogue days, the tom has no idea why Steel would leave the clan purposefully so he immediately thinks something sinister is at play. Meanwhile, Wrensong's paw recovers but it has healed at an awkward angle. The she-cat now walks with a limp but that does not dissuade her and she eagerly volunteers to join search parties.

After days of coming up with nothing, not even a detectable scent, Rex brings up his concerns with the arrangements to Cloudstar, and suggests that they look beyond territory. After Cloudstar quickly turns down the idea, Rex slips away in the dark of night to look for his lost companion. Weaseltooth was the only witness, quietly watching Rex leave the warrior den and out of camp, without a word. He stays quiet when Rex doesn't come back the next morning, conflicted. Cloudstar orders her search parties to look for the two rogues, and informs that all patrols must keep an eye out as well. She concludes the announcement by asking for anyone who knows anything about either's disappearance to step forward as soon as possible.

Weaseltooth spills the secret to his brother Foxfoot, unable to hold his guilt. His more talkative brother slips up and reveals it to Thunderstrike and Valleyshine. The two sisters were good friends of the missing rogues and were a lot more willing to be outspoken about it. Immidiately, Owlsnow, Wrensong, and a few other cats say that Rex and Steel left on purpose, going back to their rogue lives like cowards and the tensions rise even more.
Meanwhile, Sundapple begins dreaming of familiar but hazy voices, calling her beyond the border. She does not know if they were StarClan warriors or some other entity but they would not answer her when she asked them questions.

After her concerning dream, Sundapple decides to consult Cloudstar about what she heard, the other she-cat listening intently. Taking the new information covering the strange happenings, Cloudstar makes another announcement; patrols and search parties would now be closely tracked and logged, and the territory as a whole was no longer accessible. Apprentices were now bound to train in specific places close to the outskirts of camp with supervision, and patrols would now have to check in with their leader or deputy to which areas they had been to. She also encourages all of the clan members to report any suspicious behavior. Following this announcement, less can be seen of the superior roles. Perilstrike and Cloudstar discuss what they're going to do with this problem, while they decide with Sundapple and Toadhop that the two would look the dreams over with FlameClan's medicine cat at the next half moon gathering. Cloudstar requests that it be kept low-profile, as to not arise panic inside the other clan.
Perilstrike begins to form a suspicion around Weaseltooth after it was found that he knew about Rex's leaving, which resulted in longer-drawn stares across camp. The other tom is left anxious and confused with Perilstrike's new behavior, beginning to withdraw from the others as well. Perilstrike is left to wonder if Weaseltooth had something to do with the odd events unfolding, but eventually decides to keep quiet until he looks into it further on the side.

Perilstrike and his former rogue companion Moleclaw were also feeling the years. Moleclaw, having been satisfied with his training of Berryleap, accepts retirement more eagerly than the deputy and his mate. Though it only drove Mistycloud to complain more, especially regarding her antagonistic background with the rogues, it gave Skateboard a welcome kind face on the rare occasions when he would return to the elder's den.

A FrostClan patrol finds a FlameClan apprentice over the border and a skirmish breaks out between the two groups. No one is seriously injured, but the two Clans usually are willing to talk out issues like this rather than fight, showing just how frayed tempers have gotten in FrostClan. Weaseltooth and Valleyshine, the instigators of the skirmish, are given a firm talking to by Daisyspeckle, who had been leading the patrol. "It's just an apprentice's mistake, one that both of you had made at some point too." Greypaw is proud that he held his own against the FlameClan apprentice: "I showed them how a real warrior defends their Clan!"

One night, Sundapple dreams of seeing shadowy figures calling her. She follows them through a hazy forest until she realizes that it was a dreamy mirror of FrostClan territory. The figures disappear at the border and their voices are replaced with screeches of pain. This jolts her awake and the medicine cat wakes up Toadhop and alerts the camp guards that there was troubles at the border. They rush and find the bodies of Rex and Steel, unconscious and wounded. They bring them back to camp and they hope that they will have answers when they wake up.

As Rex and Steel wake up, Sundapple and Toadhop are disappointed to see that they seem to have no memory of what happened to them. All Rex remembers leaving to go find Steel abd Steel remembers hearing a mysterious noise one night near the same spot at the border. They are kept in the medicine cat's den to recover but it does little to ease the woes of the clan.
Toadhop has now begun to meet Mistleaf in secret, frustrated by the state of things and filling him in on what they've experienced so far. The other medicine cat has also begun to report hazy dreams as well.

Foxfoot discovers one of Toadhop's visits to the border and bypasses Sundapple, reporting it to Cloudstar. "We cannot allow FlameClan to know our weakness, even medicine cats. They already know enough," Cloudstar warns. "Moments of weakness are exactly when we should rely on allies," Toadhop argues. "I know you feel close to Mistleaf since you trained together, but he is from a different Clan. Cloudstar is right; he won't have any more insight than we do and it can only do FrostClan harm for FlameClan to know how lost we are without StarClan to guide us," Sundapple says firmly.
As they grow more desperate, both Cloudstar and Perilstrike push Rex and Steel harder for information, but get little out of it. Steel admits that the sound he followed grew louder when he went north, and that it sounded like nothing he'd ever heard before, not even in twolegplace, but that it might be metallic. Rex refuses to talk on the matter any further.

Cloudstar decides to take a patrol to investigate the site of their disappearance, announcing that it might take them a few days to return. Sundapple insists on joining her, wanting to see if it would answer her strange dreams. Owlsnow, Dawnstream, and Foxfoot join them. Perilstrike and Toadhop are left in charge despite Perilstrike trying to convince the leader that it should be him investigating in her place.

Wanting to help the efforts, Greypaw, Mosspaw and Berryleap try and follow the investigation party. They follow too far behind and quickly lose the party's trail and while searching to pick it back up, stumble into a fox's den. Berryleap fights valiantly to protect the two apprentices, but takes moderate wounds in the process. The three escape with their lives and retreat back to camp, though with Berryleap's wounds and injuries on both apprentices, there's no hiding what they had attempted.
