After realizing that trying to manage his grief and emotions alone was not good for him, Lightshower finally gets the courage to confess to Chestnutheart. He invites him out for a walk and admits his feelings. Not only that, he shares his struggles accepting that his first apprentice died such a horrible death. Chestnutheart is flattered and helps him with his feelings but says that it probably wasn't a good time for them to be together immediately after the traumatic event. This does bring them closer though and Lightshower is happy with the outcome.

A FrostClan patrol finds two cats at the FlameClan border. They introduce themselves as Eagletalon (a brown tabby tom) and Mistleaf (small grey smoke tom), a FlameClan senior warrior and young medicine cat. They ask if Mistleaf could shadow Sundapple for a few weeks, accepting her offer of aid at the last gathering. Daisyspeckle, leading the patrol, agrees and brings Mistleaf to FrostClan's camp, with Eagletalon tagging along as escort, to make sure the shy young medicine cat has a friendly face.

Perilstrike and Newttail have been recovering nicely. Perilstrike's shoulder heals well and he is allowed to go back to his regular duties. Newttail is a bit worse off but the infection hasn't gotten worse and most of her other wounds have healed. She becomes Mistleaf and Toadpaw's mock patient for most of their lessons and she is glad to still be able to do something while she heals. She and Lightningblaze have also become mates during this time, much to the embarrassment of Toadpaw whenever he visits during their training.

Much of the Clan assumed Eagletalon would go back to FlameClan once it was certain the young cat would be treated well, but he's been sticking around and joining patrols. "I'll be retiring as soon as I get home and I'm not done being a warrior quite yet." He's grown close to Moleclaw and the two are fast friends. Toadpaw finds out that her sister, Thunderpaw, has a huge crush on Mistleaf and soon all three of her other siblings know too. "He's from a different Clan and he's a medicine cat!"

Thunderpaw tries to get her sisters to hide her crush - after all it was just a crush. She was afraid that Berrypaw would overhear it and expose her to CLoudstar. She didn't want to be the reason for Mistleaf leaving before he was trained.

The FlameClan medicine cat decides he'll go back to his own Clan at the next gathering, as they can't be without a medicine cat for much longer. Come the day of the next gathering, Mistleaf and Eagletalon both bid their goodbyes. Moleclaw and by extension Berrypaw grew fond of Eagletalon and they would miss him and his stories as a younger warrior. Mistleaf did grow attached to the medicine cats and Newttail despite being more quiet and he thanks them for all their help. All of the apprentices are disappointed that another cat their age was leaving but they wish him luck for the future. At the gathering, Patchstar thanks the clan for the help and promises to help in turn when the time comes.

Greypaw and Mosspaw are made apprentices. Greypaw had been a bit sickly and weak as a kit, and was given to the patient ex-medicine cat Daisyspeckle, knowing she'd be able to accommodate and be patient with his limits. Lightshower was given Mosspaw, as he never finished the late Dawnpaw's training; the tom is grateful Cloudstar is allowing him another chance, but everything Mosspaw does only reminds him of Dawnpaw and reopens his grief.
Fernspots is already vying for a second litter, and stays in the nursery as she doesn't want to go back to warrior duties in the meantime.

Now that there were no more kits in the nursery, Chestnutheart often accompanies Lightshower and Mosspaw when they aren't on patrol. He assists in Mosspaw's training and his presence reassures Lightshower after his past experiences seem to be holding him back. In the few moons that this has been going on, Lightshower believes that this time was better for their relationship and he asks Chestnutheart to be his mate officially, to which the nursery helper accepts wholeheartedly.

A FrostClan patrol is stopped on the FlameClan border. "We chased a fox out of our territory yesterday and they ran into FrostClan territory. Be careful." Wrensong, leading the patrol, thanks the FlameClan warrior for the warning and sends the message back to Perilstrike. "Newttail killed the last fox, perhaps this is its mate."

Cloudstar, remembering the last time they attacked a fox and Perilstrike and Newttail got badly injured, decides to send a large patrol to track down and kill the fox. She sends out Perilstrike, Redstorm, Sparklily, Weaseltooth, Dawnstream and Lightningblaze. Newttail wants to come too, but Lightningblaze encourages his mate to stay behind, since she’s still recovering from her wounds.

(i think newttail actually killed a dog not a fox but the sentiment is still the same!)
Perilstrike and Lightningblaze were experienced at fighting bigger creatures thanks to the dog attack. Everyone else however were either nervous or excited. Both Dawnstream and Weaseltooth's littermates had fought the dog and their tales made it out to seem incredibly different. Lightshower's experience was one driven by his desire to avenge his fallen apprentice but the experience definitely left some scars in his mind which made Dawnstream a bit concerned for what was to come. Foxfoot however was a young and bold and had been proud to charge into the fray with the beast which made Weaseltooth want to prove himself like his brother.
In their quest to track the fox, they find themselves a little ways outside their border, away from clan territory. Redstorm questions if it was truly worth the risk to fight it when it wasn't actively in their territory but Perilstrike says that it would be best to handle it not before it started to venture too close.

The patrol finds the fox and manages to surprise it, but the warriors were surprised themselves when another, larger fox appears to help its mate. Redstorm is killed instantly when the second fox bursts from its den, grabbing the small she-cat and shaking her by the neck before tossing her away. Lightningblaze valiantly holds off the second fox on his own for a few moments as the others reorganize, taking many bites before he collapses, dead.
Perilstrike is about to sound the retreat when another yowl cuts through the melee and two burly tomcats join the fray on the side of FrostClan, coming to their aid. With the fresh fighters reinforcing them, the remaining warriors manage to turn the battle and send the foxes fleeing away from Clan land. Sparklily, while still alive at the end, is gravely wounded with deep bites in his neck and stomach.
Horror sets in as the Clan cats realize half their patrol might not come back alive.

(Poor newttail! She cant catch a break with all these predators)
The strangers help everyone get back to camp but the medicine cats worry that Sparklily has bled out too much. Newttail is distraught at having lost another loved one in an attack and she is comforted by the queens as she leaves the medicine cat den to provide more space for Sparklily. Fernspots is also incredibly worried for the fate of her mate. Cloudstar lets the strangers stay in the camp in the meantime as thanks for their help and they graciously accept.

Though she tried to hide it from her mentor, Toadhop was eagerly waiting for the next half moon gathering. Her sisters had matured and they seemed to be getting close to the newcomers Rex and Steel. Not that Toadhop could blame them but it did make her feel a little left out and perhaps getting to speak with someone her age again like Mistleaf would be good for her. Her generation was all growing up - Berrypaw proudly received his warrior name in the following days, much to the approval of his parents and mentor.

(oh my god a cat named Skateboard I love him so much)
Sundapple, Toadhop, and even Daisyspeckle are baffled at Skateboard's strange circumstances of joining. None of their dreams mentioned this tom but his insistence and his accurate description of StarClan warriors made them all agree that it couldn't have been a fluke. This only made Toadhop more excited to meet with Mistleaf - she now had better a excuse to talk to him than just the feelings in the back of her mind.

Mintfur gives birth before Coyotekit's parents were found and the clan assumed he was abandoned for good and takes him in. The two kits are eagerly welcomed by their fathers Chestnutheart and Lightshower. The later was having new father jitters before quickly being soothed by his mate. Morningkit's name references Lightshower's fallen apprentice Dawnpaw, an act that does not go unnoticed by her kin.
