Jewel Doric nonshifter
In a perfect world that bop would have been the end of Jewel’s troubles. That action would have marked the end to an otherwise annoying encounter, but unfortunately, this was only just the beginning of something much larger than just a minor annoyance.
The last thing she registered before falling was Enzo grabbing tightly onto her sweater. She had no time to react or even think about what was happening before she was practically thrown over her desk and landed right on top of the prince.
The breath was knocked right out of her, and she lay there, dazed, for a moment, her mind and body needing time to realize what all had just happened in the span of just a few short seconds.
She felt movement from underneath her. Enzo was most likely trying to get back up, having not realized that he would be stuck there in the floor for a little bit longer than he probably would have liked, but it was that attempt at moving that snapped Jewel back into reality. She realized what had happened, realized where exactly she was, and in a matter of seconds she was feeling something that was a lot different than the anger she had been experiencing moments before.
There was a part of her that wanted to still be angry at him, that wanted to keep chewing him out for daring to get her soda, but that was the last thing on her mind right now as she looked down at Enzo, her face growing warm and her heartbeat quickening, thudding against her chest so harshly that she could feel it pulsing throughout her entire body. Her eyes drew their focus down to Enzo’s lips, her own parting ever so slightly as her breaths grew thicker. While Jewel realized they were in a full classroom, and while she also realized she had just snapped at Enzo and physically attacked him, she couldn’t stop herself from thinking about how easy it would be to just lean in a little bit and close the gap between their lips. And while she knew it hadn’t been intentional, she couldn’t stop thinking about how much she was affected by Enzo throwing her around, how much she wanted him to harshly grip her by the sweater again and pull her down even closer. In only a matter of seconds she had went from being angry toward Enzo to wanting nothing more than to stay like this, to get closer to him, to explore the opportunity this position gave them.
But just as quick as it had happened, the moment was over with Enzo shoving her off him - which, didn’t really help with the extreme sudden attraction she had for him. She tumbled off into the floor, once again losing her breath before she could get ahold of herself and push herself into a sitting position in the floor, glaring harshly at the prince through glasses that were now sitting askew on her face. ”Hey, at least I didn’t throw up all over your clothes,” she huffed, catching on to his reference with ease. She could handle being compared to Glitch, but if there was one thing she didn’t do that the pink creature did in the books it was throw up all over some royal guy’s clothes.
While Enzo stayed in the floor like some kind of pathetic worm, Jewel was finally able to get back to her feet and back to her desk. All the while she continued glaring down at the prince, almost getting some kind of sick enjoyment out of watching him just lay there. Made her feel like she was superior in a way, and that was something she found she liked - being the superior being. ”It’s just...hard to find soda, okay? You can’t just find this flavor anywhere.” With that she grabbed the bottle and flashed it over to where Enzo could clearly see what the flavor was, and lo and behold, it was none other than...worm flavor.
Yeah, Jewel never claimed to have good taste buds.
Just as Jewel was trying to settle herself down from everything that had just happened, the teacher made it clear that their little fiasco had not gone unnoticed. Jewel should have realized the teacher would get involved over something like this, but the thought hadn’t crossed her mind, and now, as she looked up at the teacher, she found herself stiffening as she could only guess what was about to happen.
”Sor-” She put a stop to her apology once she realized Enzo was making a run for it by explaining what had happened. Jewel instantly shot a glare over at him, giving a small hiss and a curse under her breath, willing for him to stop, knowing that he was only going to make things worse for them both, but like the idiot Jewel was presuming him to be, he just kept going.
Jewel should have stopped him. She should have just outright told him to shut up, but now it was too late and now the teacher had dealt a punishment worse than death for Jewel. The dreaded ‘d’ word - detention.
She’d much rather take death than this.
Indignation flared inside Jewel. She had never had detention before. This was going to be on her academic record for the rest of her life. How was she going to get into a good aide program with detention on her record? How was she going to get a job with her future employer knowing she had a bad record during her schooling? How was she ever going to be successful in her life now that this had happened to her? Jewel was hurt. She was angry. She was crushed. She felt hollow, as if the chupacabra itself had come up to her and sank its sharp fangs into her neck, draining every ounce of blood out of her and leaving her as nothing more than a lifeless shell of a corpse.
Why had she been paired with Enzo? What sort of terrible deed had she done for karma to deal her such a cruel hand? Maybe she should have thrown up on Enzo’s clothes. Or maybe she should have tried to hit him even harder and just knock him completely out, or better yet, just kill him. Dead Enzo sounded like a dream come true to her right now.
As he came back to Jewel, she simply turned her head, giving him a sharp look from the side that already told Enzo everything she had yet to verbally say. She remained silent for a moment before growling, ”No. I’m not letting you get anywhere near this project. You’ll get your good grade if you don’t stick your nose into it, because I promise you, after all this,” she gestured to her soda and then toward the floor where they had been moments before, ”you’ll screw everything up, and you’ve already ruined one thing for me, I’m not letting you ruin a second thing.” Now she could hope that Enzo got the very clear message that she was not going to budge from this decision.

Astrid Ililoxa axolotl and cat shifter
The smallest of squeaks escaped from Astrid the moment Barney reached out and took her hand. It wasn’t like it was some romantic gesture or anything even close, but all Astrid could think about was how nice it felt to have her hand clasped by Barney. It was comforting, warm, and overall just nice, like being wrapped up in a thick blanket on a cold winter evening. Even when Barney moved her hand to where she was just holding on to Astrid’s wrist, the warmth swirling around inside her chest never faded. It remained there alongside her heartbeat, not daring to go away. And honestly, Astrid was okay with it staying.
She followed alongside Barney - not like she had much of a choice if on the off chance that she didn’t want to go. While being incredibly powerful when it came to magic, Astrid was weaker than a half dead bug underneath somebody’s shoe when it came to her physical prowess. A baby just learning how to walk could pull her along with ease, that’s how weak she was. It was just a catlotl thing, really. It was the trade off for being as magically powerful as they were. Astrid was weak, Blaine was weak, Az was weak, their mom was weak...it was just a catlolt thing.
While she tagged along, she thought about how nice it was to just be with Barney. She should be in class at this point, but class was boring, and it wasn’t like Astrid was going to use any of her academics outside of her schooling. What was important to her was her magic, and not even TAS could provide the right schooling for her level of magical abilities. What she learned about magic came mostly from what she had been taught from her parents as they were the only ones able to truly teach her and her siblings about their magic and how to handle it. There was Bricrui, the chaos magic teacher, who could potentially teach the catlotls a thing or two, but she was a Cipher, and her mom had made it clear to all her children, and the school itself, that she would never allow any of her children to learn from a Cipher. Because of that school was practically useless to Astrid. She couldn’t learn anything useful for the kind of magic she possessed, and actual academics were useless to her. Astrid didn’t plan on doing much after she finished with TAS, she didn’t exactly know what she wanted to do with her life, but she was confident enough in herself to know that she didn’t plan on going down the route of math or science or anything scholarly like that. She wasn’t sure what she wanted exactly, but she at least knew what she didn’t want.
Though, maybe she did have an idea of what she wanted to do with her life.
Astrid glanced over at Barney, the ghost of a smile pulling at her lips.
Her life was with Barney, and wherever she was, Astrid would be. That’s what she wanted after she finished schooling - to be with Barney despite the odds stacked against them.
The open air outside snapped Astrid out of her thoughts. She shook her head, eyes squinting ever so slightly as sunlight hit her. She didn’t stop squinting until they had made it under the bleachers where the sunlight was effectively blocked.
Once she could focus in the dim light, she turned her attention to Barney and her backpack, curiosity buzzing through her as she looked it over. Whatever was in there was bound to be amazing. Barney wouldn’t have dragged Astrid out all this way over nothing, so whatever it was, it was going to be real good.
Just as she settled down beside Barney, she took out an old, leather-bound book that instantly drew Astrid’s attention. Her eyes grew wide and she felt drawn to the book, as if there was something inside of it that attracted her to it. ”Whoah…” She breathed.
Forbidden spells and potions...now that was something Astrid could get behind. Most, if not all, dark magic was supposed to be locked away and never taught, but Astrid had always been intrigued by the art of dark magic. She thought herself as lucky to have parents who taught her dark magic, at least her mother did if anything. Her mom had always been a believer in practicing whatever magic she wanted, and she passed that on down to her kids, and a lot of magic that the catlotls possessed did fall under the “dark chaotic magic” category to begin with. This did make her wonder, though, if whatever was in this book was stuff not even she knew about yet.
Incredibly curious, Astrid looked at Barney, blushing ever so slightly as she noticed the other girl’s smile. ”Well, what are you waiting for?” She asked. ”Let’s see what’s inside.”

Cameo Diem Cameo felt as though she should be more disturbed by Apathy's train of thought in relation to her comment about Faif's terrible aim. However, this was Apathy, someone Cameo had been friends with for years this point and if she hadn't gotten a little used to conversations like this, she'd be concerned.
As such, or maybe despite such, she still enjoyed saying, "You are lucky I have grown to enjoy your touching, yet disturbing comfort." A very strange comfort where he noted just how much worse it could have gone and assured theoretical revenge for her. "But, I appreciate the sentiment nonetheless."
"Alas, he wasn't aiming to kill me. He's tried to avoid that in our mutual 17 years of existence," though it didn't feel like it for the first half of those years. "If I ever do die in a freak accident that could conceivably be related to some kind of game that can cause harm, then by all accounts, feel free to blame him and hide wherever or feed his body to whomever."
Cameo's attitude certainly changed from resigned acceptance to a small wave of excitement as Apathy pulled something out of his bag. And it was cool and neat and oh-so very nice and the moment he handed it to her, she plucked it out of his hands to examine it better.
With a small little grin growing as she recognized just what they were supposed to be, she quickly moved to place them on her head. And then shake her head to see them flop back and forth.
"Oh these are the best Apathy!" She shook her head once more, before tuning into his commentary on the matter. She took a guess as towards whose headbands he could be talking about, "Enzo? Who knows, maybe the day you make demon horn headbands, one will end up looking more like these sick headbands." Poor Enzo, that even the world was unkind enough to him to leave him with demon horns rather than alien ones.
A thought that was distracted as Apathy answered her cryptid question.
For half a minute she got excited. Until he added in the fact that the formerly extinct bug had gone back to being instinct. She deflated in memorial for the little insect she never met.
"Who knows, maybe an insect that survived extinction once can do it again," she idly wondered aloud, while in her mind she merely considered she was being far too hopeful for that.
She tilted her head, enjoying the motion of the antennae that followed, when Apathy mused his thought. "Huh. Well, if you want to eat a full on genuine dinosaur from the dark ages, good luck. But hey, if you're willing to settle for less, I hear there's a dinosaur shifter or two somewhere in the school. You could always ask them for a bite?"
She paused. And realized she had just casually suggested cannibalism for a friend. Something she wouldn't have done at literally any other point in her life. Wow, high school- this friend group- has really changed her a lot.
Ah, but she loves them anyway.

Enzo Grimm prince of elanaria melanistic puma/angora rabbit shifter (year 5)
- - Elanaria
TAS, Mfalwen
Okay so maybe the snarky remark wasn’t the best idea, but listen, Enzo knew he was going to get detention anyways, it was sort of a recurring theme in his life, so at this point, why even try? Besides, as stupid as licking the floor had been, he was basically just building up his immune system, like Halloween. Halloween probably licked way worse things in his life, however he wasn’t off getting sick all the time.
Still, as normal as detention was, the teacher had also said something else, something that completely ruined whatever vibe he had been going for before.
If he failed this class, he’d be stuck at TAS for another year.
That was something Enzo would not-Could not, stand for.
Quickly, he side eyed Jewel. Now, under normal circumstances, he’d be keen to believe that maybe she really did just want to do all the work and slap his name on at the end to give him a good grade. However, quite frankly, Enzo had been sabotaged before for less than what he had already done to Jewel, and with his opinion already soured for this weird, worm drinker, he couldn’t risk any sort of sabotage.
So, Enzo jumped into gear, quickly letting Jewel know that for this project, and for this project alone, they would simply have to be partners.
Jewel...didn’t take too kindly to that.
Enzo blinked owlishly into surprise as Jewel reared her fangs at him, her glare was sharp and piercing, kind of like a young, attractive librarian warning you to be quiet, and a dog like growl vibrated from her like the hum of a washing machine, and as Jewel berated him for a failure he had yet to cause, Enzo couldn’t help but let his eyes wander down to her lips, a warm, tingly sensation washing through his body.
...
...
Clearing his throat, Enzo strategically turned away from Jewel and placed a couple books down on his lap. He wasn’t entirely sure what was up with this girl, and if she had some type of alluring scent to her or something, but they had already had enough close calls with each other as it was.
Enzo needed to make sure no more of these “close calls” happened again.
So, shaking his head, Enzo gave her a pointed look and folded his arms. ”No, see, I can’t trust you to not screw me over, you could do all the work and last minute, tell the teacher I didn’t help at all and make me have to redo this entire year,” he pointed out, poking her forehead with the tip of his finger. ”I do not trust you, and this is way too important to just let go,” he explained with a quick, firm nod of his head and a huff of his breath. ”Sorry, Worm Girl, whether you like it or not, you’re stuck with me until this project is done, because there is no way, in any form of hell from any afterlife in the giant expanse of the multiverse, that I am staying here for even a second longer than I have to.”
As soon as he graduated, he was out, gone, forever off to find something better.
...Now, granted, it wasn’t like he had any plans yet, he wasn’t entirely sure what he was ol going to do with his life. Unlike Elari, who had had her future picked out for her since the moment she was born, or Enoch who had found his passion early in life and stuck to it throughout the years, Enzo...Enzo sort of just...existed, he didn’t really have a purpose, nor world greatly suffer if he wasn’t there - kind of like how it didn’t benefit from having him there either - and quite frankly, he was pretty sure everyone would be at least a smidge better off without him, except, maybe, the boogeymen, who might all end up homeless without him.
However his point was, even though he didn’t really have a plan yet, or know what he was going to do with his life or if he had a purpose at all, he knew he wasn’t gonna stick around here in order to find out.
Jewel would simply have to suffer with him for a few weeks.
— — —
After what seemed like forever, class finally ended and Enzo quickly collected his things, however instead of leaving in a rush - per the usual - he lingered this time and turned back to face Jewel, a determination flaring through him as he cocked his head to the side and have her a purposefully annoying smile. ”So, partner, what should we do first?” he asked, further cementing the fact that he wasn’t going anywhere.

Eternal Blood Cipher-Grimm rotterman pinscher/unicorn/demon shifter (year 4)
- - Elanaria
TAS, Mfalwen
Barney breathed in the scent of the book, the aroma of old, dusty paper and worn out leather intoxicated her surroundings, however, this was more than just an old book, and as she held it in her hands, tightly grasping the spine of the old book, Barney could feel the magic radiating from it, as if warming her hand just from the touch.
What she held right now, was power in the form of written words.
Tingling, Barney glanced over towards Astrid, a smirk pulling at the corner of her lips as she placed the book down in her lap and swept her fingers across the cover. ”Lets see what’s in here,” she murmured breathlessly, turning her mismatched eyes back down to the book, running her fingers up towards the opening, and for just a moment, she hesitated before finally, thrusting the book open.
Instantly dust exploded in her face and as it tickled into the back of her throat, Barney let out a cough, waving the air in front of her face until the dust had faded to the ground. Blinking to get any lingering dust from her eyes, Barney looked down to the first page.
A small dedication stared back on her.
”To all those with the desire to learn that which others may call forbidden, may you never stop daring to do the impossible.” Barney read out loud, tilting her head curiously to the side. ”Huh, doesn’t mention who the author is,” she mused quietly. Whoever the author was though, clearly they were a kindred spirit, even across the times.
Flipping to the next page, Barney looked over the table of contents, her eyes quickly scrolling down each page number, each spell, and how many pages it took to complete it. ”Mind control, love spells, necromancy, this book has a lot of stuff,” she mused out loud. Technically, some of the stuff listed were things some powerful magical users could theoretically do, however without the proper learning of how, and with the fact that it was truly illegal to cast such spells, stuff like this wasn’t too common place.
Quietly, Barney scooted closer to Astrid so she could keep looking as the browsed the pages, flicking back and forth between spells that intrigued her.
What her family would kill to get their hands on this...the Cipher side of her family, obviously, considering it was the other side of her family that kept this away from curious children.
However, something told Barney that this book would hold all her Cipher cousins’ interest.
Which made it all the more valuable to keep from them. The second and shared this book with the others, it was all over. She’s probably never get it again because it kept getting passed around and completely skipped over her. They’d claw at it and ruin its specialness with their desire to absorb all the dark secrets within.
Frowning, Barney clutched the book tighter.
No, her family was never allowed to know about this book.
It was for Barney and Astrid, and them alone.
Relaxing her muscles as Barney remembered that currently, no one else knew about it, nor did she have to share it with anyone, Barney continued to browse the book, turning excitedly over towards Astrid every now and then to smile and point down at a spell that seemed interesting to her.
Quite frankly, Barney could stay like that forever. Sitting somewhere secluded, reading over a forbidden book, with Astrid right by her side.
”We should try some of these soon,” Barney mused as she slowly turned a page in the book. ”Most of them seem to take awhile though, and need a lot of preparation, I think it would be best to do it when we’ve got the time,” she continued as she absentmindedly dead over the words. ”Maybe we can make a night of it, think about it, you, me, alone under the stars with good book,” Barney mused quietly. ”I like the sound of that.”
When it was just the two of them, she could be herself, without the worry of any family getting in the way. Honestly, Barney was surprised none of her other family had tried to befriend her or one of her siblings.
You’d think befriending someone their specifically told not to befriend would be right up their ally. However, Barney was glad nobody else has. Out of all the things she hated having to share, she was quite convinced she’d hate sharing Astrid the most.

Apathy Kingsleigh heir of hym common crow/golden retriever shifter (year 5)
- - Elanaria
TAS, Mfalwen
Apathy have a small nod in response to Cameo. She understood him by now, he didn’t have to excuse himself for what he would say or how. Just because he knew multiple different ways to end her life via her neck, didn’t mean he would ever do it, plus, if anyone else ever killed her, he’d be a good detective at figuring out how and who...and since everyone knew it would probably be Faif, he’d finally have an excuse to give Faif a special tour of Hym.
Anyways.
As Cameo looked over her headband and seemed to get genuinely excited about it, Apathy gave a rare, very small, hardly noticeable smile. It wasn’t much, most people would miss it if they weren’t paying attention, but it was still there. Apathy had always enjoyed crafting things for his friends, it’s one of his less “weird” hobbies that he was actually good at, and seeing his offends enjoy and appreciate it, well...it was nice.
”I got bored over break, there’s only so much camping in the woods you can do before the hair on your neck doesn’t stand up when creatures watch you from the dark anymore,” he said with a rather casual shrug. ”It seemed appropriate to put that boredom to good use.” Besides, they needed more merchandise...granted they weren’t selling any of this, however Apathy enjoyed crafting together Boogeymen inspired things for them all to enjoy. He supplied the group with content that he was proud to say, most friend groups didn’t have.
They didn’t deserve cool alien headbands.
However, once Cameo brought up casual student cannibalism, everything else went out the window.
Of course he was still saddened about the bug, but eating a dinosaur seemed so much more entertaining of a thought to ponder right now than that of a measly little bug.
Apathy quirked his head to the side. ”You know, I have always wondered about that,” he started, lifting a finger in the air. ”If I bite them as a human, while they’re a dinosaur, would the bite I tear off revert back to human or remain dinosaur?” He questioned. ”Furthermore, would that be considered cannibalism, since at the time, we are not the same species? Or vice versa, if I bit them while I was in my animal form and they were human, is it still cannibalism?” he mused out loud. ”What do you suppose qualifies as cannibalism in our odd society of both man and beast?” It was a worthwhile question.
Typically not a whole lot of people asked about cannibalism in these sort of in depth questions that Apathy had for the world, and therefore, it wasn’t like they had an extreme case of cannibalism laws set in place that would answer this for him, and so, Apathy was left to question alone, the rights and wrongs of eating his fellow classmates.
At least he had Cameo to converse with, and get a second opinion on it all.

Jewel Doric nonshifter
It wasn’t very often that Jewel got this emotional around somebody. Typically she was unimpresssed with others and didn’t even bother giving them much of anything by way of emotion. She was cold and distant, and that’s how she liked it, what she preferred. Jewel didn’t give any emotional attachment to anybody outside her family, and even then, with some family, she could still be classified as cold. It was just how things were, but with Enzo… With Enzo, it was hard staying cold. He made her hot, turned her into a fiery flame that wanted to burn him down and destroy him until there was nothing left. She wanted to be rid of him, and the only way her emotions could think of was to burn him down. But Enzo was proving to be a rather fire resistant enemy, and Jewel was getting more than fed up with it.
Another low growl bubbled up inside her throat. She continued to glare at the prince, eyes sharp and narrowed. ”I would screw you over in so many other ways, but messing up your academics isn’t one of them,” she huffed. Jewel was a lot of things, and she knew she was capable of ruining somebody’s grade if she ever desired, but she would never do something even close to what Enzo was saying. ”Just ask all the people I’ve done projects with before.” Unfortunately for Enzo, if he did ask for anybody else she had done a project with, Jewel would be unable to give any names. She didn’t know other people, and didn’t even bother to learn the names of the people she was supposed to have worked with before in the past. ”I’ve never ratted them out, and I’m not about to start with you. I mean, what does that say about me if I tell the teacher I did all the work? They do projects for the sake of teamwork and bonding and all that crap, and I’m not about to lose points for missing out on the friendship of magic.” Her words were soaked with sarcasm when she said the phrase ‘friendship of magic’. Group projects were absolutely stupid in her opinion. They were ridiculous. She saw no benefit in working with others when it came to her grades, or when it came to anything, really. Jewel was a solo person in everything she did. She didn’t need other people. Her grade was her own, she didn’t need somebody else meddling with it or hurting it just because she had been forced to work with somebody of less intelligence than her. ”Some teachers would even go so far as to say I helped my partner cheat on their assignment, and that would automatically fail me. I wouldn’t risk that, and I especially wouldn’t risk something like that on you of all people.” Her words were harsh, but she didn’t care. Enzo didn’t deserve her politeness, and she wasn’t about to pretend to be nice just because he was the prince. Perhaps other people would try to be civil with somebody of royal standing, but Jewel wasn’t like that. The feelings of others didn’t matter to her.
Eventually, Enzo seemed to have settled down, just long enough for them to get through the rest of class; Jewel had a feeling that this wasn’t the last she’d have to deal with him, especially if he was truly adamant about helping with the project, which she was sure he had been dead serious about. Despite her frustrations, she managed to swallow them down for the sake of getting through class, listening to everything else the teacher had to say until class was dismissed.
Not one to be late for any part of her daily routine, Jewel quickly gathered her books and began to make her way out of the classroom. She had a clear shot of the door until the nerve grating voice of a certain somebody entered her ears.
For a moment there she had half a mind to simply ignore him, but the fire from earlier forbade the act of ignorance, and so she was forced to meet the prince’s annoying smile with a clear look of disgust plastered upon her face. ”I’ve never had to deal with fleas before, but I may have to schedule an appointment. Maybe that’s what we should do first, so after that, I won’t have to deal with pests anymore,” Jewel muttered. Never once had she believed that Prince Enzo could be as annoying as he was, though for as annoying as he was, there was that part of her that couldn’t shake the fact that there was something else there besides just annoyance. That fire of anger he sparked inside her doubled as an ember of attraction, and she wasn’t willing to snuff out that flame. It was a nuisance, but she at least knew how to handle that. Enzo himself though…now that was much more of a puzzle she needed to figure out, but at least she was smart, and no puzzle had stumped her before; this one would take longer, but she was sure in herself that this project would soon go just like how all the others had gone before - Jewel doing the work to her own liking and turning it in for both her and her partner to relish in the sweet victory of a perfect grade.

Astrid Ililoxa axolotl and cat shifter
With just how powerful Astrid was, one would think that a cloud of dust would be nothing to her, but instead, it absolutely destroyed her.
The dust didn’t even hit her directly in the face, but the particles that floated around traveled right into her nose, drying out her nose and throat. Momentarily her throat constricted, causing her to lean forward and shudder as coughing racked her body. Astrid felt as if an eternity has passed as she sat there and coughed, struggling to breathe and get a grip on herself. Here she was, some all powerful magical being, and yet, dust was going to be her downfall. She was making a fool of herself in front of Barney, and she wasn’t even going to get to live to apologize or explain herself to the girl beside her. It was embarrassing, but Astrid couldn’t even think much about that due to the fact that she was currently in the steely grip of death.
She had once assumed that her death would be something cool, something like going down in a raging inferno, but nope, here she was, succumbing to fate all thanks to some book dust.
Maybe this was fate telling her to leave the dark magic book alone, that only terrible things would come from it, but she wasn’t going to have Barney close it. Not when Barney seemed so excited about it. Not when that book was making Barney smile, and seeing that smile was one of the best things Astrid could lay her eyes upon.
Not that she could see that smile if she sat there and died.
Eventually the coughing began to subside. Astrid was able to draw in a deep breath of clear air, and after a moment of recuperating, Astrid managed to calm her body down. Her throat was now sore, but she was able to tune back into what Barney was saying when she began to read off the list of spells the book included.
Despite the coughing fit she had just recovered from, Astrid couldn’t help it when her lips pulled up in a sly expression. ”I can already do, like, everything you just named,” she pointed out. She didn’t have the proper training on these spells, obviously, but she knew she had the magical abilities to do as much. Already she knew for a fact that necromancy was something she could do with ease, it was something her mother had done once before. Though, as she thought about it, necromancy was the reason for why her being so much as friendly with Barney was forbidden. Well, her mom bringing back Barney’s mom wasn’t the reason for all the hatred, but it had been the start. Astrid would do a lot to go back and prevent the hatred that had transpired, and in theory, she could go back in time, but not even she was dumb enough to not realize the consequences that would come from changing something as drastic as that. The consequence could be something as big as Barney not even being born at all, and Astrid...Astrid couldn’t bear to think of that.
Instead, what she wanted to think about was sitting here, alone, with Barney. And Barney seemed to be on the same track. Of course, Barney was only thinking about the book and what spells they could do, but that didn’t stop Astrid from thinking of it in other ways. They would be alone under the stars, just the two of them, nobody there to bother them or ruin the fun. They could sit there and talk about all sorts of things, perhaps Astrid could even reach out and cuddle up to Barney, maybe fight down her nervousness and actually bring up how she felt around Barney. Maybe Barney felt the same way, and if she did then maybe...maybe they could hold hands, or kiss, or...or...give in to other passions while under the soft light of the moon and stars.
The blood underneath her cheeks boiled. She looked down at the ground, unable to hide the smile or the redness that painted her face. ”That...does sound really good,” she murmured, unable to bring her gray gaze up to Barney. So badly did she want to reach out and clasp her hand against Barney’s own, or lean against the other girl and simply relish in the fact that they were alone, but she held herself back from doing either of those things. It was a hard task to accomplish, but her self control here was impeccable, though it was perhaps only due to the fact that Astrid didn’t want to ruin Barney’s excitement over the spell book.
Speaking of the spell book… Astrid finally pulled her gaze back up and looked over at the book. ”What sort of spell are you thinking we should try?” Astrid was willing to try any of them out, but she was curious to know if Barney had any ideas on what she wanted to do just yet with this forbidden knowledge.

Cameo Diem Cameo grinned. It was difficult not to. She'd dare anyone not to start grinning uncontrollably when their typically apathetic friend decided to give a heartfelt gift to them.
She wouldn't put all of her money on it, but she'd put some on the bet that the small upward curve on her friend's face was indicative of a smile. It may have brightened the grin on her face just a tad bit, but there could be no proof of that in the natural world. She was merely happy about the fact that she now had a rocking headband to show off.
His story about his choice to make them was pretty fun and very him as well. She gave a lopsided smile before saying, "Never imagined I'd be praising boredom for something, huh?" As, everyone knew, boredom was by all accounts one of the worst offenders in life. But Cameo supposed it had some benefits appearing here and there.
It certainly did suck that Apathy couldn't be appeased from something so appealing- well, she wouldn't personally say getting freaked out by the dark wilderness was appealing to her- Cameo was willing to reap the benefits.
Plus, she was still caught up on how fun they were.
She tilted her head in the other direction, smiling to herself as the antennae moved with still. Oh, she was going to be an absolute nuisance in classes today, wasn't she?
She blinked herself back to attention, having a difficult time smoothing down her smile as Apathy considered her proposal. He brought up some unfortunately good questions about the matter.
"You'd think there'd be some answers to those. Surely somebody's lost a limb in animal form before to set precedent, right? I guess if we don't know that, you should also be in animal form when eating them, just in case it does turn back into human meat. Avoid any claims of cannibalism-"
Then, Cameo paused. He had followed it up with questions of what cannibalism was actually considered in their world of strange beings. Though provoking conversation of the day, Cameo supposed. And she was willing to spend all of her thoughts on this, likely to the detriment of her classes, but alas. "Cannibalism is defined as eating your own species right?"
"So, I guess as long as you aren't both in human form and aren't the same kind of creature, it should be fine? Unless you count anyone who can shift to be the same species and that animal forms don't count as something different..." Cameo stated, offering the two big ideas there. It set in a moment later and she put the thought into conversation, "but then, it might mean you can eat humans who can't shift? Since they'd be different from humans who can't shift?"
She frowned, getting a bit too in depth with this. "Are subspecies considered the same species? I mean, we all originate from like, common ancestors, right? Bacteria that started the world or something... so eating anything would be considered cannibalism then, huh?" That was a concerning thought then, right? If one was even concerned about being a cannibal, that was.
"I mean, isn't the issue with cannibalism mostly just consent, right? Like, sure, avoid the brain cause diseases, but otherwise, if you get permission from whoever you want to eat, then technically, it should be fine."
Now, Cameo didn't personally which to participate in cannibalism either way, but she supposed she wouldn't be the kind of person to prevent others from participating if they wanted to. If she were that kind of person, she wouldn't even be entertaining this. But, turns out, she was curious about the ethics and technicalities behind it.

Enzo Grimm prince of elanaria melanistic puma/angora rabbit shifter (year 5)
- - Elanaria
TAS, Mfalwen
Enzo had, most definitely, not missed Jewel’s odd comment about the different ways she’d screw him, however as the class has gotten back into full swing and everything else that had just happened, there wasn’t entirely time for him to respond. Instead, he settled for a raised brow and a certain look that he hoped she picked up on.
It was a weird comment, and one that could be taken in...different ways than Jewel was probably intending, though Enzo doubted she meant what he picked up. She didn’t entirely seem like the type.
So he let it go and tried to marginally focus on class.
Class however, went by in a blur.
Enzo wasn’t sure if he took a nap or just majorly zoned out, but it seemed as if one moment, class had barely started, and the next it was already over, and he had merely been pulled out of his own mind by the teacher announcing just how vital this assignment was.
That’s when his brain really started to kick off.
Now that he knew what was on the line here, Enzo couldn’t afford to risk anything.
Not even letting someone else do all the work for him, which normally, would have been an ideal situation for him.
So, as the class came to a close and Enzo followed Jewel out, he stubbornly refused to budge. ”Theres not a flea shampoo out there that will rid you of me, I’m like a cockroach and you’re not gonna get rid of me anytime soon,” he commented stubbornly, folding his arms. ”No wait, even better, I’m like a phoenix, even if you killed me, I’d come back, even stronger, and just I dunno, bird peck your eyes out for killing me,” he decided with a rather casual shrug.
He probably wouldn’t actually like peck her eyes out if the situation did come up, but who knows? Anything is possible.
Keeping a steady pace with Jewel, Enzo kept his gaze on her. ”Listen, you have no idea how stubborn I can be, I will literally not leave your side if I think you’ll ditch me and work on this without me, so we might as well just work together on this, because no matter how much you say you won’t screw me over, I don’t believe you,” he told her with a vague hand gesture. ”No offense but I don’t really believe anyone until their at least a tier three friend, and you’re like, not even my friend, I wouldn’t trust you with anything, especially not something so important.”
Enzo had a few and far amount of people he trusted.
His parents and siblings, and the boogeymen.
That was pretty much it.
He kinda trusted his extended family, but he definitely didn’t feel the same connection to them as he did to the boogeymen, and after the experiences he had had with people ever since he beat up Faif and Sharon, his willingness to trust others went way down.
Jewel hadn’t earned his trust yet, and quite frankly, he seriously doubted she ever would.
So, simply put, she’d just have to deal.
”So, I’ll ask again, now that you got your jab in, what are we doing first? Do we like, hit the books or something? Should we go the library or...?” he trailed off, staring intently at Jewel...probably a little too intensely, honestly, but hey, he wasn’t about to stop.
He didn’t really know how to take the lead on projects like this, considering he stopped doing them, so it was up to Jewel to guide him, especially since she claimed to have such high expertise in this.
So, until he got his answer, he’d simply continue to enact a staring contest with the girl until she eventually caved and agreed to work with him so they could actually secure a good grade on this stupid project so he could graduate and he’d never have to touch TAS again.

Eternal Blood Cipher-Grimm rotterman pinscher/unicorn/demon shifter (year 4)
- - Elanaria
TAS, Mfalwen
Barney laughed a little at Astrid’s comics and smiled at her, gently poking her cheek with the tip of her finger. ”Yeah, I know you can, but for those of us who cant, this is pretty cool,” she explained, looking back down towards the book.
Now, Barney liked to consider herself a powerful magician of sorts, her grandfather had been a powerful demon and her grandmother had been a unicorn, not to mention her other grandmother, who happens to be a demon witch.
Over all, Barney came from some kind magically powerful bloodlines, however she hadn’t been taught how to harness nearly the amount of power that she knew she had at the tip of her fingertips, if only she was able to unlock them.
Barney, as well as most of her family, had been held back by stupid “laws” put in place for people’s “safety” or whatever, and no matter the potential, there was only so much that could be done about it, if all that potential was permanently chained to the ground.
But now...now with this book, suddenly all that potential came alive.
She could teach herself, she was sure of it, and with the help of this book, Barney very well may end up becoming even more powerful than the rest of her family, which might just be what she needed to finally set herself apart from the rest of them.
...Speaking of unlocked potential.
Barney cast a glance back towards Astrid.
”....You know, I bet with this book, you’d be even more powerful than Blaine,” Barney told her, holding the book out for Astrid to take. ”Think about everything you could learn, everything we could learn, together, we could become the most powerful people in the world, and then, Blaine would look like nothing compared to you,” Barney told her, a wide smile beginning to stretch her lips across her face.
Barney had never personally been a fan of Blaine, not for how he treated Astrid, not for how much of his mother there was in him.
She still wasn’t sure what Enoch saw in the guy.
Her cousin was a straight up prince...granted, he wasn’t necessarily considered the “hot” prince, but still, he was a prince nonetheless.
You’d think he could have any guy he wanted.
Yet for some reason, he chose Blaine.
Barney was convinced there was something seriously wrong with him.
Pulling the book back into her lap, Barney contemplated Astrid‘s question carefully as she flicked through the table of contents again.
There were so many spells in here that she wanted to try.
”Hmm,” she started, flipping through the book before finally, she stopped at a page with an interesting looking spell on it. ”What about a summoning spell?” she asked, smiling ever so lightly as she looked back to Astrid. ”Maybe of the...supernatural variety? Eh?” Barney asked excitedly, holding the book up to her face as she looked at Astrid, a spark in her mismatched eyes as she thought of all the spells they could try now.
With this book, Barney was certain her and Astrid would do the impossible, and one day, they’d leave their mark in the history books.

Apathy Kingsleigh heir of hym common crow/golden retriever shifter (year 5)
- - Elanaria
TAS, Mfalwen
This was something most people just didn’t understand about the boogeymen, no topic was out of bounds, nothing was off limits, if you wanted to discuss the legality and moral aspects of cannibalism, nobody judged you, they simply joined in with their own input.
Apathy dared anyone else to be as relaxed about it as his friends.
”Hold on, I want to try something,” he decided, placing his backpack on the ground before shifting in his odd little dog-bird form right then and there. It was a quick transformation, something Apathy had mastered by this point. By now it was a flawlessly easy change.
Now as a dog...bird...thing, Apathy turned his head back to his body and started pecking viciously at his side until a good clump of fur fell out, once satisfied with the fur, he shifted back and quickly lifted up the side of his shirt to see a scab forming on his side.
Of course, he had no fur on his sides in this form, but seeing the scab was pretty cool.
He only looked at it for a moment before kneeling down and picking up the tufts of golden dog fur that he had pecked off himself, he picked it up and held it in his hand, showing Cameo as he got back up to his feet. ”It stayed the same, it didn’t change with me,” he commented in a rather monotone voice.
This implied that once that part of you left your body, it stayed in the form it was in when it left your body. Fur stayed fur, skin stayed skin, and so on and so forth.
Now, Apathy was sure there were probably already studies that proved this, but he was curious now, and experimenting on himself just seemed so much more convenient then searching for a book or an article on the internet that would aid him on his study,
Shrugging, he slipped the clump of fur into his pocket and reached for his backpack again, gesturing for Cameo to follow him as he started walking down the hallways. ”Assuming this is how it is for all body parts, it opens up a whole revenue of cannibalism,” he pointed out in the same, rather casual voice he had.
Apathy didn’t have an interest in eating human, that seemed gross to him, however all of this started because of his dinosaur discussion, and that’s really where the interest was, and now with his point proven, Apathy was all the more determined to track down a dinosaur shifter and ask if they’d shift so he could taste test them.
Maybe he’d bring a little back for Halloween as well. He’d like that.

Jewel Doric nonshifter
”Oh wow, you actually know what a phoenix is? I’m surprised,” Jewel muttered, eyeing Enzo skeptically as he brought up the mythical fire bird. It was one of the more common fantastical creatures talked about, along with dragons and unicorns, but Jewel was actually somewhat surprised that somebody like Enzo could even comprehend the firebird. His brain seemed too small to be able to grasp the idea of something dying only to turn into ash and then resurrect itself some time later. For Jewel it was a rather simple concept, but for Enzo...it seemed like his brain would fry up and malfunction trying to think about something as a phoenix; though, she was proven wrong. Enzo didn’t seem to be fritzing out or anything right now, if anything he seemed to be doing just fine. He was still acting like a thorn in her side.
How unfortunate.
Perhaps it would have been better if the prince had fried his brain and gave up right then and there. Maybe there was still time for that to happen. Jewel could find something to bring up that would destroy his brain. She had a long list of things that normal human brains wouldn’t be able to understand.
By now Jewel had hoped that Enzo would have given up and left her alone, but yet, he was still here, ever annoying and seemingly dead set on doing this project together for some weird reason. Jewel didn’t need a partner. She didn’t need somebody dictating what she could and couldn’t do in the project. She knew what she was doing all by herself, she didn’t need somebody helping her out. Unlike most students, Jewel could handle a project of this size all on her own. It wouldn’t be a challenging task for her at all, she could so easily handle all her work in other classes and still be able to save free time for herself as well. It was something she did all the time, something she was used to. She briefly wondered if it would be possible to talk to the teacher and ask if she could do this alone and throw Enzo off to somebody else, but that seemed like a lot of work, and too much interaction for Jewel to want to deal with. Though, if Enzo kept this up, Jewel might just consider doing that if only because, at that point, going to the teacher would be the lesser of two evils. It would be one of her next plans if this one didn’t go the way she wanted.
”I don’t care about your stupid little tier list. I won’t screw you over, but with how much you keep bringing it up, it’s starting to sound like maybe you want that to happen, but I’m not doing that. I told you I don’t screw people over when it comes to their academics. Think of another way for me to screw you over and the answer might just be different.” There were so many other ways that she could screw the prince over, but messing with the project and deliberately ruining it was something Jewel would absolutely never do. Other things though...well, she would gladly participate in those.
Anyway.
Enzo was now challenging Jewel. Despite not being a shifter herself, the instincts of both the cat and dog that she would have been remained. In fact, her instincts were stronger than that of a typical shifter, and right now those instincts were showing themselves. The dog side of her knew that this was a display of trying to gain dominance. Whoever held eye contact the longest would come out the winner, while the one who looked away first would be deemed the loser. Jewel was no loser. She was determined to come out of this as the winner, the alpha, if you may. Enzo was about to taste defeat - this wasn’t something he would get to win just because he was the son of the king.
The prince had issued a challenge, and Jewel was willing to meet it with her own. She met his blue gaze with that of her mismatched gaze. She stood there, never once letting her gaze lose contact. She’d keep at it for hours if she had to - she’d do whatever she could to be the winner here. A low growl rumbled in her throat. ”I can go to the library on my own. You can just go back to doing whatever you do. Your assistance isn’t required; I’ve told you I don’t work with a partner. If you got that the first time, I could already be working on this. Honestly, I could be half way done with this project by now if you had just left me alone to begin with, but now you’ve wasted all this time and the project hasn’t even started yet.” Jewel felt like a broken record at this point, saying over and over again that she wasn’t somebody who worked with others. She worked alone. That’s how she liked it, and how she had always done it. And if this prince could get it through his thick, stupid skull, then she could get to working on their project right now rather than standing around silently challenging Enzo with a staring contest. A staring contest that was starting to somewhat test her willpower. The prince was infuriating, finding all sorts of ways to rub Jewel wrong, but yet, at the same time, his annoying nature really was starting to make him attractive in a very infuriating way. It was the way that made people want to throw somebody else against a wall and make them shut up by slamming their lips against one another. It was annoying. Jewel just hoped Enzo would get it soon that she wasn’t budging on her ‘no partner’ rule and leave her be. That way she could finally get started on the project and just go about her day as she usually did.

Astrid Ililoxa axolotl and cat shifter
There was a lot here going on that Astrid was enjoying. She was alone with Barney, they were having a good time with this forbidden spell book, the night was a nice one...everything was as good as it could realistically get, but then Barney threw in something a little extra that had Astrid’s mind reeling with questions and scenarios she had thought of before, but usually suppressed them knowing it would never happen.
”More powerful than Blaine…” She murmured under her breath, looking down at the book now in her hands as the thought ran loose in her mind. Despite him being her twin, somebody who should have been her equal, Blaine had always been the one to go above and beyond. He surpassed her in magical skill, and he most certainly topped her when it came to confidence. He was the one that was better than her, the one who knew how to handle his magic and do even greater things with it. Astrid...well, she knew she was powerful, and she knew she had all sorts of untapped potential when it came to her magical abilities, but she wasn’t like Blaine. He had charisma, he had flare. Even with him being a troublemaker, he was the kind that could usually talk his way out of it with smooth words, and perhaps even using a little bit of his own magic to help persuade his slimy self out of trouble. He was the twin that their mother could be proud of, the one that she’d always pick first. He wasn’t the one that was friends with a Cipher, wasn’t the one breaking the one rule her family had in place. Blaine was basically the perfect catlotl, and beyond that...beyond everything else, he was the one that had been able to get the person he wanted. Blaine had his own Grimm, one that their parents could approve of, while Astrid wanted nothing more than the one Grimm she was supposed to be against. She would never have Barney. It just wouldn’t be allowed. There would be no happy ending for them. She could try and try but nothing would come out of it, only anger and displeasure. Even now, just being friendly with Barney, would get her in a ton of trouble that she was honestly afraid of; no telling what her mother would do if she found out about all of this. No telling what would happen if Blaine found out about this. He would go straight to their mom, and after that...it would have been better if Blaine had absorbed her in the womb.
But if Barney was right...if what Barney was saying was true, then...then perhaps, with this spellbook, she could finally do something about that. Maybe she could finally hold something over her brother’s head and take charge for once.
And if she had Barney by her side…
This was a no brainer for Astrid. She was going to do this.
A summoning spell didn’t sound hard. It would be an easy start, especially for Astrid. ”Let’s do it.” She looked over at Barney and gave a mischievous smile. ”Let’s summon a ghost, or ahuizotl, or we could raise the dead. What all do we need? I can get anything real quick, I’ll just teleport where ever, grab the thing, and come right back.” There was bound to be something they would need. Probably something weird like a frog’s eye and salamander spit - though maybe Astrid’s own spit could count there considering she was part axolotl - but no matter what it was, Astrid was confident that she could find it and bring it back in a matter of minutes. Together her and Barney could conquer any spell, no matter how wild it was, and Astrid was determined to see just how far they could get together.

Enzo Grimm prince of elanaria melanistic puma/angora rabbit shifter (year 5)
- - Elanaria
TAS, Mfalwen
Enzo could tell he wasn’t going to like this girl. He was used to people treating him badly, however usually it was a quiet scorn, an avoidance, a hushed whisper as he passed, a anonymous case of vandalism on his locker, or on his car, or his dorm room door...pretty much anywhere they could get away with it.
Basically, it was the sort of quiet type of poor treatment. The avoidance as he was dubbed something dangerous and odd.
This though.
This was different.
Jewel’s dislike of him was loud and clear, she insulted him directly to his face and looked about as angry as a cat that had yet to be fed breakfast. She was vocal and precise, setting up a firm stance of what she thought of him from the get-go, and weirdly enough at all, her intolerance of him didn’t seem to have much to do about the rumors or about TAS’s “favorite couple” or about his peculiar friend group.
Instead it seemed entirely based on the fact that she was uncommonly possessive over the grossest looking soda on the face of the earth, and well...the fact she had to deal with him at all.
In some sort of odd way, it was almost refreshing...almost.
Still, Enzo made a face, flaring his nose as he kept an easy pace with Jewel. ”Nothing you say or do will convince me to leave this alone,” he decided pointedly, waving his arms out in front of him. ”No matter how many insults you throw at me, no matter how many times you promise not to screw this over for me, none of that will make me go away.”
He meant it too.
This was too important to leave in the hands of a stranger, not even a stranger that claimed willing to do all the work and give him credit. Enzo couldn’t afford to trust her simply based off of her word. He didn’t trust anyone outside of his family and the boogeymen, and he wasn’t about to start now.
Besides, Enzo had no idea who this girl even was. He didn’t know if Jewel was known for good grades, even if she claimed she was, nor could he trust her not to get petty and vindictive and throw him under the bus anyways.
Unfortunately for Jewel, his mind was made.
Enzo was determined to stay,
Stepping in front of the girl, he blocked her path. ”Now listen, here are our options, either we work on this together and simply put up with each other until the project is over...” he started, trailing off as he looked directly into her faintly mismatched eyes. ”Or I promise you, I will make sure neither of us get an A, I will drag both of us down, and then we’ll both fail the project,” he told her, folding his arms. ”Now, I don’t know you very well, but you don’t seem like the type of person willing to risk an F, are you?” Enzo questioned smugly, head titled to the side as he stared down at her.
He didn’t necessarily like that it had come to this, but hey, if she wasn’t willing to work with him, Enzo wasn’t afraid to get dirty, and if there was one thing he was good at, it was failing a class.
Either they worked together and both benefited from a good grade, or neither of them did.

Eternal Blood Cipher-Grimm rotterman pinscher/unicorn/demon shifter (year 4)
- - Elanaria
TAS, Mfalwen
Barney’s eyes remained locked on Astrid as she watched the other girl think, a small, soft smile on her face. Astrid was very dear to her, a close friend; to know that she could benefit from this book as well, that she could become one of the most powerful people in the whole world with it, and then finally she might have the confidence to stand up to her brother.
It was...it was nice.
It was what Astrid deserved.
So when she agreed to it, Barney instantly grinned and bumped their shoulders together. ”Atta girl, Astrid! Let’s prove what we can do!” she exclaimed excitedly, pausing for a moment to look at Astrid and smile at her before quickly turning back to the book.
She has already flicked through it, looking for a good spell, and in doing so, one of them had caught her eyes.
So, flipping through the pages, Barney stopped once she found the spell in particular. ”Okay, so we’ll need...” she trailed off as her eyes flicked across the page, glossing it over as she searched for any needed elements to the spell.
Turns out...there was a lot.
”Hold on,” she said with a small wave of her hand, moving the book aside in favor of her backpack and quickly began rummaging through it.
It only took her a moment before she found what she was looking for.
A pen and some paper.
Wasting no time at all, Barney scribbled down every needed element until she had accumulated quite the long list.
Nodding in approval, she closed the book and held out the paper to Astrid. ”Here, I wrote them all down for you,” Barney explained, her eyes trailing from Astrid to the paper. ”Some of them seem like they’ll be hard to find though, are you sure you’ll manage?”
The list of ingredients was long, though most likely necessary for such a powerful spell, and as such it only seemed right that the ingredients would be long and rare as well. Barney didn’t doubt Astrid’s abilities, however even for her, it would probably be hard to find things such as a “pure unicorn’s eye” - there were few pure unicorns by now, even Barney herself had some unicorn blood, even though it was far too little to ever be considered pure - and “essence of dimension” and the like.
If anyone could do it though, it would be Astrid.
”Let me know when you have everything though, and we can figure out the best night to put it to the test,” Barney added as she stood up, dusting off her clothes and placing the book back inside her backpack, ”I have a great hiding spot we can use too, out in the woods, it’ll really make the whole thing come alive,” Barney finished, smiling over towards Astrid as she reached a hand out to help her up to her feet, a sense of excitement tingling throughout her body at the prospect of spending a night out in the woods, practicing forbidden dark magic spells with Astrid.

Jewel Doric nonshifter
This project was going to be a nightmare. Jewel didn’t want to work with anybody. She didn’t want to work with Enzo. She wanted to hole up in her room and work on this all by herself. Doing that would be a guaranteed passing grade, and Jewel did not want to risk messing up the perfection she had worked so hard for. Failure was not an option - imperfection was not an option. But thick-skulled Enzo over here was not about to let Jewel do the work by herself. She never had to deal with somebody with that mindset before, and for all the annoyance and anger it was causing inside her, she had to give him some credit where it was due. He was stubborn and held his ground, and that in and of itself was admirable.
For as much as she did not want to back down and give Enzo a win, Jewel was starting to think that maybe it would be in her best interest to take a loss. It was clear that this nuisance of a prince was not going to change his stance, and honestly, Jewel just wanted to stop the bickering and get back to her work, and it was looking like the quickest way to do so was to just let Enzo have this.
Regretfully she conceded. She would take the loss on this, but everything else from there she was not going to take no for an answer. He could partner up with her, but she was calling the shots on how they studied, when they studied, and what was put into their research. Just because she was letting Enzo have this didn’t mean he could get everything else he wanted out of her. Jewel was no pushover. She was quiet and stuck to her own personal bubble, but that did not mean she was meek. Jewel was stubborn with strong opinions. If anybody tried to change her mind or change her ways she wouldn’t dare let them; she did things her way, and if somebody tried getting her to stop she’d simply stare them down and continue doing whatever it was that she was doing without a single hint of regret.
With a sigh that she made sure was loud enough for him to hear the annoyance in, Jewel shook her head. ”There’s no way I’m risking an F.” She couldn’t take failure. It wasn’t an option. Never in her academic career had she failed, never had she gotten anything but perfect. That wasn’t going to end here. Enzo wasn’t going to be the start of her downfall, she wasn’t letting this prince ruin her.
There wasn’t anything that Jewel wanted to do more right now than wipe that smug look off Enzo’s face. It crossed her mind to actually reach out and smack him just like she had done earlier, but for once she was able to rationalize herself out of an animalistic impulse. Besides, there would probably be plenty of opportunities to give the prince a good bop since Jewel doubted he was going to make it easy on her despite having agreed to finally working together.
After some time of silently thinking, Jewel spoke up once again. ”Alright, here’s what we’ll do. Meet me at the library after classes tomorrow. We’ll start the research then since I’m sure we can wait a bit on starting. But,” she started, voice sharpening into a tone that suggested she’d hurt him if tried going against her, ”if you start messing anything up or start acting stupid, we’re done. I won’t work with you if you don’t take it seriously, so you better actually help.” Jewel wasn’t having any mistakes on this, and if Enzo thought he could do anything other than the assignment then he had a whole other thing coming.

Astrid Ililoxa axolotl and cat shifter
Astrid couldn’t even begin to count the amount of times that she had imagined surpassing Blaine. The thought of being even more powerful than she already was brought a shiver down her spine every time. What she could do already was unimaginable to most people, but if she could take what she could already do but with a lot more power, then she honestly would be unstoppable. She could do whatever she wanted. She could even stand up to her mother, tell her that she wasn’t listening to the ‘no Cipher interaction’ rule, and she could finally be with Barney.
Or, well, be friends with Barney publicly.
Friends…
Her heart ached. Being friends with Barney was one thing, but her emotions craved so much more, and for all Astrid knew, Barney only saw her as a friend and nothing more. Barney probably didn’t even think of Astrid in any other way than a friend, and honestly, Astrid couldn’t blame her. Why would somebody so cool and beautiful and amazing think of Astrid in a romantic way? Barney probably even liked somebody else, somebody who would be better for her, somebody who wouldn’t get her in trouble. Astrid had no idea who that person could be, but surely Barney had somebody out there that she wanted to spend her entire life with. Whoever that person was was incredibly lucky, and Astrid hoped they knew that. Jealousy bubbled up ever so slightly, lurking right there alongside the ache in her heart.
That ache only grew when Barney gave her shoulder a bump, excitement pouring from her. Astrid could only manage a small smile; for as much as she wanted to share in the excitement right now, she couldn’t quite find that spark if only because another thought plagued her mind - there was somebody else out there that would get to have moments like this with Barney forever, and that person wouldn’t be Astrid. It could never be Astrid.
Fortunately the cat-axolotl didn’t have to linger on these thoughts and emotions for long. She hadn’t noticed when Barney grabbed a pen and paper, but she now saw the paper that was handed to her; she took it without question, glancing it over before looking back to Barney. ”Hard to find?” She questioned and then looked back down to the paper. Astrid didn’t think that finding ingredients for this spell would be hard, but once she actually started looking over the list, she did end up finding a few that might take her a little bit longer than she had originally thought to find.
”Hm…” She hummed to herself, squinting her eyes in as she tried to memorize what was written down - not like it was necessary to memorize them, she literally had a piece of paper with everything on it. A pure unicorn eye… That one was gonna be a bit hard. There weren’t that many pure unicorns left. Even Barney, who was unicorn, wasn’t fully unicorn. She was a mix of other creatures, and even if she was pure unicorn, Astrid could never bring herself to hurt her, even if it was just taking an eye. But no matter. Astrid could find a full blooded unicorn and take an eye from it. Essence of dimension would be rather easy, at least for somebody like Astrid who had powers that went beyond time and space. It would take some time, though, to gather enough to use in a spell. But, despite it all, Astrid could do this. She could gather all of the ingredients and together, her and Barney could do this spell.
Once looking through it all, Astrid nodded. ”Alright.” She folded the piece of paper to stuff in her pocket for later. The smile that couldn’t quite form from earlier managed to make its appearance, genuine joy and excitement finally buzzing through her.
She took Barney’s hand to get back up onto her feet. ”It’ll be a day or two, but I can get everything, and once I have it, you’ll be the first to know,” she promised with that smile still on her face.

Aha, success.
Enzo knew sooner or later, he would be able to convince her. Sometimes all it took was casually threatening to take someone down with you before they actually listened. Was it possibly a bad look on him? Maybe, maybe. Did he care? Absolutely not.
He was getting out of this place, and besides, beyond this project it wasn’t like he was gonna see this girl again anyways, so it didn’t really matter what opinion of him she had.
Besides, it couldn’t be worse than what Enzo had already heard about himself from others. He wasn’t very popular, not since...he wasn’t gonna get into it now, he just scored himself a victory, and he deserved to relish in it for awhile before he slumped back down into the dumpster his brain called home.
Smirking, Enzo nodded in approval. ”Sounds good to me,” he agreed and winked at her, sending a pair of finger guns towards her. ”See you there,” he told her and started to walk away. He saw no point in sticking around, the conversation was over and unfortunately for him, he had other classes to get to today.
Soon, this project would be over though, and he could put his entire TAS experience behind him and do...something else with his life.
He wasn’t entirely sure what he would do yet, as he hadnt really put a whole lot of thought into it. He had been busy...and well, quite frankly, there were times he didn’t entirely think he would make it to adulthood anyways, so what was the point in figuring out what to do with his life?
It was fine though, once he was out of TAS, things would get better.
Once he could simply be himself and be free of the reputation he had build for himself, things would be better.
They had to be.
sorry this is so short, it’s just to kinda wrap up the scene so???

A few days, that was okay, Barney wasn’t expecting that they’d have everything they needed right away anyways. Besides this gave her a chance to prepare. It would take some planning to figure out the best escape route from her dorm at night, as well as the best location to go for the spell, plus she had to read over the spell a bit more and make sure she didn’t miss over some vague important detail that was going to ruin her life later on.
After all, mysterious dark magic books from the forbidden section of the royal library? There was bound to be some “potentially life ruining if you did one thing wrong” spells in there, that just made sense.
So really, this worked out well, Astrid could get the stuff, using her very cool dimensional travel powers, and Barney could study up on the spell and formulate the perfect plan.
With that decided, she smiled and slung an arm over Astrid’s shoulder. ”You know, you and I make for a pretty good team,” she commented coyly, smirking over towards the other girl. ”We should work together more often.”
Just then, the bell rang.
First period was over, Barney and Astrid had missed all of it.
Which hey, skipping class to hang out with her friend and learn about forbidden dark magic seemed like a good way to spend your time, to her.
However that being said, if she missed out on too many classes, she was bound to get in trouble and while as a Cipher, and a daughter of her parents, Barney welcomed trouble with open arms, she did realize some things were better saved for a later time.
She had to save up her trouble points and use them on something worthwhile.
So, she moved her arm away from Astrid. ”Alright, I should go, if I miss out on too many classes, I’ll end up in detention with all my siblings and cousins or something and that would be a nightmare,” she half joked.
She wanted to once again state that she did love her family, however it was no secret that the Cipher Clan could be a little much at times.
”I’ll see you later though, and listen, this spell? It’s gonna be great, life changing even, I feel it in my bones,” Barney added, gesturing to her arms as she slung her backpack over her shoulder and began walking backwards, watching Astrid until she couldn’t watch her anymore before disappearing from sight, off to her next boring class.

Cameo Diem Cameo nodded lightly, curious as towards the experiment Apathy was about to conduct. Something relating to the conversation, but she didn't quite grasp just how until he had not only transformed into a creature of interesting look- though, she'd argue most shifted forms were some amalgamation of monstrosities unless they happened to be like her and singular in their animal (in which, she felt to make the extra note that a monstrosity was not something to be ashamed of, she thought it rather cool and was marginally jealous of most creatures of strange form and shape)- but it was Apathy's actions that soon followed after that made that piece of a puzzle click.
She watched in passive curiosity and interest as he caused injury to self in the name of this moral and biological curiosity. She was plenty sated by the fact that Apathy was likely fine from pain, else he'd hopefully quit doing what he was doing, that she waited for him to transform back and openly explain the findings.
She pursed her lips as he confirmed what it looked to be. "Huh, well, would you look at that then," she muttered, leaning in to look at the golden dog fur closer. Her eyes flicked up to his hair, in a rather absurd manner of confirmation that if it would change, it would take on more of the dark color as his hair.
She leaned back straight, tilting her head instead as she thought. "Debatable cannibalism," she reminded, "Especially since we now know... I don't even know how to define this information. We all have two different bodies? And depending on which you feast from and feast on could dictate whether or not it's really cannibalism."
She frowned to herself. "Nevermind, I don't think I want to try to get into the logistics of it. The point of the matter is you could eat a piece of a dinosaur shifter, whether or not it's considered cannibalism, it'd still be dinosaur meat in the end," she supposed aloud.
That was the important part of the matter. The rather demented matter, but it was the matter nonetheless. She'd maybe have considered it too if the taste of meat with scales didn't repulse her on some level. Her losses and their gains really.

Kalahari Grimm lion shifter
Failing an assignment for class was of no surprise to Kalahari Grimm. What was a surprise to him, however, was the note written beside the clearly marked 'F' that was all too familiar to the young prince.
"What does this even mean? I've never had a note like this before." Kalahari's voice was laced with confusion as he continued to look at the paper, eyes squinting as if he were looking for something that could be missed despite every word being clearly visible. Maybe his twin brother, his partner in crime, the one guy he could never go places without, could find something that Kalahari had missed.
The lion shifter rolled over, getting off his bed that he had been laying down in since he had gotten back from class, attempting to decipher this in the comforts of his covers. Paper in hand he reached out toward Ko, wanting his brother to take it from him. "Can you find anything on this that I can't?" He asked, head tilted, puzzled.
Now, Kalahari was not known for being smart. Academics had never been his strong suit. It didn't bother him, it wasn't like he cared about his grades or anything like that. Maybe he should, but what was the point? He wasn't going to do anything academic based in his life. It wasn't like he was going to go and become a teacher or something later on. To be honest, he wasn't exactly sure what he wanted to do career wise, he kinda always figured that being a prince would be good enough, and if worse came to worst, then there was no way his dads wouldn't let him just live with them for the rest of his life. Now that sounded pretty good to Kalahari. He never wanted to leave his dads even when he was all old and wrinkly and complained constantly about his back hurting like the average fifty year old did because fifty was absolutely ancient to Kalahari.
Which, as he thought about it, wasn't his dads fifty, or close to fifty? That meant they had to be old, older than anything Kalahari could even think. Were they going to die soon? How much longer did Kalahari have with them? Would they even still be around by the time Kalahari got out of school and had to really think about what he wanted to do with his life? How was he supposed to think about his life when his dads were dead?
His throat went dry with worry. A low whine escaped the lion, something stuck between a choke and sob. "Ko..." He started, voice weak, eyes downcast, all thoughts about the odd note on his assignment cleared from his mind. "Do you...do you think our dads are gonna die soon?" It wasn't a thought that Kalahari wanted right now, but it was stuck in his head now, plaguing his thoughts and keeping him from focusing on anything else at the moment. It was hard imagining his dads being dead, no longer being there when Kalahari needed them for whatever stupid question he had that day. They had survived so much in their lifetimes. They had gone through war and all kinds of things that could have killed them, it just didn't feel fair that old age would take them. Why couldn't they just be immortal so Kalahari could always have them around? Unless that was selfish... It probably was, but...but nobody wanted their parents to die. Kalahari was sure Ko would agree, so would Elari and Enoch and Enzo and Ephraim. He was sure none of his siblings wanted their dads to die.
His lips tightened, more words finding their way on his tongue. He remained silent a moment longer before the words escaped. "They're, like, fifty now. That's old," he murmured, clearly upset with the way his mind had taken his thoughts down this dark road.

Ko kicked his feet, letting them hover in the air as he sat on a chair that held him up high enough to let his feet fly freely. It was nice to know they didn’t have school for the rest of the day...though, that didn’t mean he didn’t have stuff to do. Ko had found many things to busy himself with, including sports and clubs, however at the time, he didn’t have anything to occupy himself with.
That was of course, excluding his brother.
Ko tilted his head to the side, gazing over towards Kalahari with a curious look in his eyes as his brother went on to mention something he didn’t seem to understand. Eager to find out what it was all about, Ko reached his hands out and made a grabby gesture for the papers.
Once the paper was in his hand, Ko quickly read it over.
Blah blah blah...failing in your classes....blah blah blah...think it’s best...blah blah blah...given you a tutor...blah blah blah...Zeke Bellwether...blah blah blah...Library...blah blah blah, think it’s for the best...blah blah blah...school stuff.
Ko made a face, puzzling over the contents of the letter. Granted he skimmed over post of it, but from what he did read, it sounded like they were getting someone special to help Kalahari in school. Like a coach but for education.
He pouted.
Why did Kalahari get a education coach and not Ko? They did everything together...except the milk thing, but that hardly counted, Ko didn’t need the blue milk like Kalahari did, he wasn’t deficient in whatever it was that blue milk gave his twin, but as far as school stuff went, Ko and Kalahari were as thick as thieves....without ever stealing anything of course, and now...
”They’re giving you a school coach, I think...someone to hype you up while you do schoolwork, like an educational hype man-“ that was what a tutor was, right? ”It says you gotta meet them in the library at 5.” That was coming up, wasn’t it?
Ko pulled out his phone, glancing over the time.
4:43 pm.
Yeah, that was in.....
Ko paused for a moment and did the math in his head.
That was in 23 whole minutes.
Ko frowned and slouched onto the table. ”It doesn’t mention me, so I guess you gotta do this on your own...” he mentioned, trailing off as he put his face up against the table and pouted, looking up towards Kalahari with big, puppy dog eyes.
That’s when he realized his brother’s mind was focused entirely on something else.
Once again, the lion prince tilted his head to the side and watched as his brother started to panic about their crippling old, ancient fathers.
Now personally, Ko didn’t think they were that old, they had somewhat of a youthful glow to both of them, even if they did look older than most people Ko was around. But even still, he didn’t think they were old old.
So, with a confidence that was most certainly misplaced, he smiled and put a hand on Kalahari’s shoulder. ”Don’t worry, they’re not gonna die, they’re gonna live forever, kings can’t die, if they died, nobody would be king, so they’ll just never die,” he explained confidently. ”Besides, I saw an old person once, they had all these lines on their face and their hair was white but not Elari white, more like...Enoch white,” Ko paused for a moment to imagine what Enoch would look like with all those saggy lines and bruised looking skin.
Instantly a shiver ran down his spine and a haunted look crossed over his eyes.
...Ko just hoped Enoch inherited their father’s youthful glow.
”Anyways, my point was that Papa and Baba don’t look like that, so they can’t even be that old,” Ko reasoned with a bright smile.

Kalahari Grimm lion shifter
Kalahari had faith in Ko. If anybody could find something that Kalahari couldn’t then it would be his twin brother. He believed in Ko fully. Nothing was impossible for him. But Kalahari did stop and wonder why he couldn’t figure this letter out. It looked like each word should be self explanatory on their own, but together they made a confusing, jumbled mess to him. Why did they want him to use his time outside of class to keep doing school things? And why was he getting a note like this when Ko wasn’t? They did everything together, every teacher in the school should know that by now. Where one went the other followed, that’s how it always has been. Why were they changing this up for them? It didn’t seem fair to Kalahari, and if he remembered the next time he saw this specific teacher he was going to give them a piece of his mind - nobody was separating him from Ko. If Kalahari had to do this then so did Ko.
The lion’s attention snapped back to what his twin was saying as Ko spoke up. There was a confused look on the other lion’s face, Kalahari clearly seeing the deep thought that was trying to go on inside Ko’s mind. ”An educational hype man?” Kalahari cocked his head to the side. ”But why do I get one and not you?” That was one of the most confusing parts about all this. ”I’ll let you go with me, if you want,” he added that last part rather quickly, though he was pretty much certain Ko would go with him. They did everything together, so naturally his brother would follow him along even with this. Plus, if Kalahari was being honest, he didn’t want to go without Ko. New experiences didn’t scare him, but he always felt a natural sense of comfort whenever he had his twin around.
Though even with Ko around right now, Kalahari felt a squeezing uncomfortableness tighten around his chest at the thought of his dads dying soon. He didn’t want that to happen; he never wanted that to happen. The thought of his dads just no longer being there terrified the young lion. What would he do without them? They helped him and all his siblings with so much. They ruled an entire kingdom together, so what would happen to Elanaria if they were to die? It was hard to think of anything positive, all of Kalahari’s thoughts now swamped with despair. He was drowning in thoughts, scrabbling in the murky water, unable to get out. It was terrifying, his heart racing, thudding against his chest.
His head was going under. The panic was setting in, drowning him, pulling him deeper and deeper. And then, somebody reached in and pulled him free.
Kalahari gasped. Air rushed into his lungs, reviving him, pushing the fear out. He blinked, staring at the face of his twin. Confidence was plastered on Ko’s face, a gentle smile guiding that assurance he had.
Ko’s words washed over him. Reassurance cleansed the thoughts that had been plaguing him earlier. His whole body sagged with relief, eyes looking downward and away from his twin. ”Oh, that’s good to know,” he breathed. ”I don’t want them to die, ever.”
The lion shifter was quiet for a moment, letting the relief sink in. His dads were okay. They wouldn’t die. He silently thanked any ancestors out there for keeping his dads safe, and once he felt at ease with all the worries that had come and gone, his mind drifted back to what this conversation had actually been about in the first place.
Quick and sharp, Kalahari straightened himself up, eyes wide as he tried to look at the paper he had handed Ko earlier. ”What time do we need to be at the library again?” Naturally he added his brother into that. Where he went Ko went. Kalahari waited silently for an answer, though he was sure they needed to be there rather soon.

Ko blinked and looked from the paper and then back to his brother. Now, naturally, he wanted to go with Kalahari to this whole tutoring thing. After all, who wouldn’t want an educational hype man? However, he also knew that as much as he loved doing ever young with Kalahari, they weren’t literally attached at the hip and there were some things that they had to do alone.
Like pooping.
They couldn’t poop while they were together, that was kind of weird.
Peeing was a different story, in fact whenever Ko did feel the need to tinkle, he would always drag Kalahari along anyways and always use the urinal right next to whichever one Kalahari was using, this made it easier to talk to his twin and compare how much pee they both had.
But pooping was more of a solitary thing.
Tutoring must be like pooping, since only Kalahari was requested.
Sighing, Ko dramatically shook his head and looked to his brother. ”They only asked for you, looks like this is a pooping situation and you gotta do it alone,” he explained, placing a hand on Kalahari’s shoulder. ”Sorry man.”
What was Ko even supposed to do while Kalahari was doing this whole tutoring thing? Find some friends to hang out with? Or maybe he could find Mur and talk to him. Ko always enjoyed spending time with Mur, and he fully believed that one day, they would be friends.
....Ideally more, but Ko was getting ahead of himself there.
He liked Mur, but he wouldn’t ever overstep, he would be content if they were at the very least, friends.
Standing up, Ko gestured with his head for Kalahari to follow him. ”Come on, I’ll walk with you until we’re there, besides it looks like you gotta be there pretty soon,” he explained and passed the note back to Kalahari.
The walk there wasn’t too bad, even though Ko would admit he almost got lost once or twice, after all, he wasn’t used to this path, he almost never went to the school library to begin with.
Soon enough though - far too soon, in Ko’s opinion - they were there and he stopped just outside the library entrance, looking back to Kalahari to see how he was doing. ”Are you ready for this, bro?” he asked, a flicker of concern washing over his face as he looked to his twin.
