Elari Grimm snow leopard
Elari gently tucked some of her snowy white hair behind her ears, glancing down at the floor. Maybe she wasn’t giving herself enough credit, but there was also a chance that she was giving herself far too much credit as it was. She was supposed to be the crown princess, heir to the throne of Elanaria, however she wasn’t a very good princess. She didn’t command respect or know how to handle everyone’s problems, she didn’t know how to lead or how to handle large crowds.
After all, despite being at a literal ball, a pretty staple thing for a princess, she had easily gotten overwhelmed and hidden herself away with her favorite book instead of actually going out there and handling it like she was supposed to.
Still...the compliments were nice and Elari couldn’t help but go pink in the cheeks at them. ”You really think so?” She asked, looking back up at the other girl, a hesitant smile appearing on her face. There was a chance that she was just saying such nice things because Elari was her princess, but for some reason, Elari didn’t think that was the case here. That smile, no matter how small it had been, had been genuine, and that was enough to warm her heart a little.
Now if only she could remember the other girl’s name.
She knew it started with a C and she knew she was part of the troubled kids class-wait, the class.
Elari could just fall back on the little song she had made up to remember everyone’s names.
How did that song go, exactly?
Elari stepped back slightly, frowning thoughtfully at her ballet slippers as she tried to remember the song.
However as much as she wanted to go over it, her attention was dragged away from the song once C...Canary asked if she really thought she looked good in her tux.
Elari nodded in confirmation, smiling over at her. ”Oh yes, you’re very dapper in it, I could never pull off a tux like that,” she admitted and cast a glance down at her dress. Elari didn’t have a very good build for a tux, and they didn’t seem to quite fit her that great no matter how hard she tried.
That was okay though, she could stick to dresses and Camden could wear the suits, after all, they fit her much better anyways. The dark black and white contrast really made her short, fluffy, light ginger hair stick out, and she definitely had the form for it, in fact, Elari thought that she should wear suits more often...though maybe she did, Elari wouldn’t know, she had only met her in the troubled kids class a couple times.
That’s when the other girl asked her a question and Elari felt her cheeks burn up immediately.
Quickly, she stuck her hands out and shook them. ”No! No! You pull off the tux magnificently but you don’t have to literally pull it off!” She squeaked out so fast her brain wasn’t able to filter through any of her words.
That was definitely not where Elari had been going with her offer.
”What I meant is that I think I know a spell for this! I don’t remember it off the top of my head though, but I know I have it in one of my spell books upstairs,” Elari explained, face still burning as she tried to push the conversation along.
Looking away from the other girl, Elari glanced around for a second before sighing and grabbing hold of C...Carly’s hand - she really needed to remember her name soon, this was getting ridiculous - and gently tugged her forward. ”Come on, we can find the book faster together,” she explained and started to lead her up when she realized she was still holding onto her hand.
Flushing pink again, Elari quickly let go of her hand and sent her an apologetic look. ”Sorry,” she said quietly, moving to head down a hallway when she stopped, suddenly realizing she still had her book and her plate to deal with. ”Hold on,” she said quickly and rushed back over to her chair, picking up her book and the plate of chocolate covered strawberries before joining the other girl at the edge of the hallway. She smiled over at her. ”Alright, now we can go,” she told her with a small, affirmative nod before starting down the hallway that led to the stairs.
She knew this palace like the back of her hand, which made sense since this was also her home.
It would still be awhile before they got up there though, in which she planned on using this time to remember this girl’s name.
So, humming in a whisper just under her breath, Elari went over the song in her head. ”Theres Barney, and Elmo, and Cermit, then there’s the Cipher Bunch, then beyond my cousins and their cousins there’s Astrid the axolotl, and Blitz the demon carademon, then theres James the fox and Canna the Irish setter~”
...That was the one.
Letting out an excited gasp, Elari almost dropped her plate and book as she turned back around and grinned at Canna.
Canna, Canna, Canna, Canna, Canna, Canna, Canna.
She was going to burn that name into her memory.
”Canna! That’s your name! It’s Canna!” She said, practically beaming at Canna.
...However that was when the excitement wore off and a frown fell on her face. Oh no, now Canna would know that she had forgot her name, especially since most people didn’t actually just randomly shout the name of their companion.
She shuffled her feet for a second of so, gulping back the awkward silence.
”...Anyways, it’s not too far until the stairs,” Elari said, subtly trying to change the topic away from her little outburst as she started further down the elegant hallway.

Khairee Grimm lion
Ko tilted his head, brow raised as he gave Chayse a confused look. Ask...like a normal person? Isn’t that...isn’t that what he had done? Besides, it had been more of an invite if anything, but apparently Chayse here didn’t agree. ”But that’s what I did,” he told her rather simply. ”I didn’t invite you like a crazy person,” Ko continued, figuring he ought to explain himself since apparently, Chayse didn’t understand.
That’s okay though, some people needed things to be explained to them a little more than others and there wasn’t anything wrong with that, in fact, often times, especially when it came to the academic side of school, Ko needed to go over things a couple times before it started to make sense to him and he was lucky he always had people willing to help him out when he didn’t understand something, if he really wanted he could even call up his parents and know that they’d help him with anything he needed help with.
Maybe Chayse just needed a little help too.
However, by now, he did feel like he had properly explained his invite and could now move on to explain why he needed that ladder in the first place.
Ko pointed over to where Enzo was, his brother was watching them from his perch, though he was doing it in his “I’m totally not watching and I totally don’t care” way, even though Ko and anyone else in their family could see through the facade with ease. ”My brother-“ just then, he remembered his conversation with Enzo.
Enzo didn’t want Ko shouting it to the rest of the world that he was stuck, and Ko looked out for his brother, or any of his siblings for that matter, no matter what.
Pausing for a second, Ko tried to come up with a lie on the spot. ”He’s hungry, and uh...well he’s part rabbit, so he needs something a little more sustainable than the food we have here, so uh, um...I was going to get him a ladder...to eat,” Ko let out a puff of breath, placing his hands on his hips as he shuffled his feet. ”...Yep, my brother wants to eat a ladder, that’s what I’m going with,” he decided with a firm nod of his head.
He knew it was a terrible lie, but listen, Ko wasn’t used to being put on the spot like this, especially not in a situation where he couldn’t tell the truth. He didn’t enjoy lying and it was no secret that he was terrible at it, but he would lie for the sake of his siblings. He’d do anything for them, even if he wouldn’t exactly do it well.
Standing there for a little longer, Ko tapped his foot against the ground and exhaled, dropping his hands off his sides. ”Anyways, so I’m gonna go find that ladder now, so...” Ko gestured vaguely behind him, not really sure if he should invite Chayse to come along again or just sort of...go.

Canna Kingsleigh irish setter shifter
It wouldn’t be hard for Canna to go on and on about all the wonderful things she thought about when it came to Elari. There were beyond a million things she could bring up and mention to the princess, but she was well aware there wasn’t any time to even scratch the surface of all of that. For as much as she wanted Elari to know what Canna thought of her, the canine shifter held her tongue for once and remained quiet. Well, she didn’t remain silent, but she didn’t come out and say every little thing she wanted to. ”I know so. I mean, you’re great, and that...that isn’t a lie,” she murmured, gaze shifting away as she gave something of a nonchalant shrug. All that was mostly to hide the redness in her cheeks, but at this point it was probably just easier to let it show how red in the face she was instead of hide it.
Especially since her face only kept getting redder. Canna wasn’t sure how it was possible for her face to get any redder, but she could just feel it warm up even more when Elari confirmed a second time that she thought Canna was very dapper in her tux but that the princess herself wouldn’t be able to pull it off.
”No, no, I think you could! I know you could,” Canna started on a bit too frantic of a note, as if she was trying to quickly fix a wrong that had been made before it was noticed by the wrong people. ”You would look incredible in a tux, just as incredible as you look in a dress. Like right now,” she pointed out, nodding toward the princess. ”You look incredible, like, you look every part the princess you are. Maybe even more than just a princess, like a goddess.” Okay, okay that was enough. Canna was going to get all mushy and flusterey again if she didn’t watch it, not like she wasn’t already at that level, but she needed to stop herself while she still could. She wanted to come out and say that she thought Elari looked like a heavenly goddess all the time, but she was able to hold her tongue and keep quiet. Even if she was being a flustered idiot right now Canna was able to keep herself from going a little too far.
It was a good thing she had been able to stop herself or she would have had to endure all of that mess along with the whole “should I take off my tux” myself she had gotten herself into.
Just when she thought she had stopped blushing, her face went redder than her hair all over again. Why had she thought Elari meant for her to take off her tux? Of course the princess hadn’t meant that, but instead meant something entirely different. There were so many different ways of getting clothes dry that didn’t involve taking them off. ”Right,” she murmured, knowing that if she spoke up any louder her voice would still be cracked and squeaky, just like how Halloween had sounded that one time she had been over at her aunt and uncle’s and Halloween had decided to inhale a squeaky toy. It had been funny until he had given one last little squeaky breath before his throat had been completely obstructed and he had almost choked. But he had been fine, he didn’t die or anything like that. He could have, but he didn’t, and that was what mattered,
Though the second Canna felt Elari grab hold of her hand the Irish setter shifter was sure that, unlike her cousin, she had died.
Immediately she stiffened up, her body going rigid. Canna was sure her heart gave one last lurch before falling still into her chest, her breath catching and staying stuck inside as well. She would be lying if she said she had never imagined what it would feel like to hold the princess’s hand, but now that it was happening she knew she never wanted to let go. It was so much better than what she had imagined, and already Canna had imagined that holding Elari’s hand would be a magical experience, she just hadn’t expected it to be like this.
The princess’s hand was incredibly soft, and Canna almost felt as if her hand would melt right through Elari’s own. She was lost in a world where this was normal, where she would get to hold Elari’s hand all the time if she wanted, and as Elari tugged her along she followed without any second thought, never faltering as she stayed beside the princess.
This perfect world of holding Elari’s hand was lost much too soon for Canna’s liking. Once the princess had let go, Canna couldn’t help but give a faint whine of disappointment, her hand already feeling way too empty and useless without Elari’s right there. But she supposed she couldn’t fault the princess - grabbing chocolate covered strawberries was important. As for the book...well, not so much. Canna wasn’t that much of a reader, but to each their own she supposed. She wasn’t about to fault Elari for enjoying literature.
As she followed the snow leopard she found herself lost in thoughts about this whole situation. Not only was she alone with Elari, but she was alone with Elari as they made their way through the palace, away from the ball, away from the crowds, and they were heading to what Canna was assuming Elari’s bedroom. It was like some perfect romance story, the couple needing to get away from the crowds so they ditch the party and head to one of their rooms, only the reality of it all was that this wasn’t some romantic getaway and they weren’t even a couple. But even still, Canna was going to take what she was given, and this moment was something she was keen on remembering for the rest of her life. This was the first time she had been alone with the princess and had an actual face-to-face conversation with her, Canna wasn’t going to let this moment go for the life of her.
For now she remained silent, just taking this moment with Elari in. Canna had no idea if she would ever get a chance like this again, and even if it wasn’t how she had planned her first real meeting with the princess, it was better than nothing and she was going to make the best of all of this.
Canna was content with staying quiet and just soaking in the moment, but it wasn’t long before that changed. At first she had no problem with the princess’s little song. If anything it was cute from what she could hear of it, but she was curious as to why the princess was going over a list of names. Maybe it was practice for something Elari would have to do later. It made sense to Canna that the crown princess would have to give some kind of speech at the ball at some point, but she didn't know why the names were relevant. Eh, it would all become clear eventually, and - wait. Was her name at the end of that? If Canna’s guess was true and this really was some kind of speech the princess was going to give, was Elari dedicating an entire part to just Canna? That...that was…
…
Oh.
It all made sense now.
This whole time, this whole time where Canna thought that maybe, just maybe, Elari really had noticed her and she stood out to the princess had just been hopeful wishing. Dumb, stupid hopeful wishing. Elari hadn’t even known her name this whole time, but come to think of it it made sense. Elari had referred to her only as “stapler girl”, which, yeah, that still meant the princess knew who Canna was, but it wasn’t because she thought about Canna as a special individual, but rather just somebody who had gone out of their way to stab somebody with a stapler. Man, she had really gotten her hopes up, hasn’t she? But why would Elari know her by name? Why would Elari give Canna even a second of her time? It wasn’t like Canna was special or important or anything like that. While she loved her moms, it wasn’t like they were anything important. They weren’t like her Aunt Rilla who was just tough, cool, and overall amazing. They weren’t like her Uncle Absalom who was cool and an entire Duke of a district. Apathy and Halloween were cool by extension of that. Canna had a lot of family that was important and held a lot of respect, but she wasn’t a part of that. Like she had pointed out earlier, she absolutely loved her moms and wouldn’t change them for anything in the world, but they didn’t hold any importance or anything like that which in turn made Canna rather unimportant. It was why she had to make a name for herself. It was why she had to be cool and rebellious, why she had to act out and become somebody people would talk about. Even if the attention she got was usually negative, it was attention nonetheless, and it was doing the wrong thing that got the most attention and fanfare. Being the bad girl made a name for her quicker than being the good girl, and by now Canna wasn’t going to change that. She enjoyed what she did. Being rebellious was fun, but apparently it still wasn’t good enough to be anything beyond “stapler girl” to Elari.
Doing her best to hide the fact that this new development really hit a sore spot for her, she mustered up something of a smile even if she was sure it was a weak, pathetic one. ”Yeah...yeah, that’s me, I’m...I’m Canna.” She couldn’t even get herself to look up at Elari, afraid that if she did the princess would notice the hurt in her stormy blue eyes so she kept her gaze down and fell silent once more as she followed after Elari.
So long for not letting anything ruin this moment.

Haha why is it all the off topic rps I want to join you create? Before I make characters, a friend and I were trying to create a family to join with together and wanted to ask about some weird shifters. The ones we were iffy on were a yeti shifter, a spectre/ghost-like shifter, and a harpy shifter. Let me know if there's any issues with these and how we can work them out. I can't wait to join!))

I’d suggest adding an animal element to it, like an animal/creature ghost shifter? If that makes sense, but otherwise that one is also good to go!))

For the ghost shifter I was trying to find another cryptid creature to base her around to complete the family dynamic so she was based much more around like a banshee or a wraith rather than like a ghost of someone who died. So more of a creature than an apparition. No worries if you'd rather me find a different cryptid tho, and I can probably find an animal to tie it to as well, if I'm interpreting your suggestion the right way lol))

((Hi I'm the friend-))
((I was working on characters but just had a few questions on how the magic system works. Is magic drawn from a specific category and you're born with the ability to use certain types? Or is magic just magic, and you can channel it however? Is the ability/inability to use magic hereditary? What are some examples of spells/effects that would fall under each category? Elemental and Earth I mostly get, but for White, Grey, Black, and Chaos, is the only distinction intent? Also how exactly does Alchemy work? Is it more like building magical gadgets and integrating technology that way? Or is it something different? Sorry if it's a lot, I'm just thinking about having a character who uses magic and want to make sure I understand.))

Assuming Chaos can do a lot of things, it's just super hard to control, as you said. But the effects are closer to that of Black Magic than White? Or they just always tend to have a negative side effect?))

Assuming Chaos can do a lot of things, it's just super hard to control, as you said. But the effects are closer to that of Black Magic than White? Or they just always tend to have a negative side effect?)) I would say that chaos magic leans on the same negative effect that black magic does like 90% of the time, usually its??? Pretty dark but doesn’t always have to be, it’s sort of like “based off of intent” like, the magic itself is unpredictable, but it does focus a lot on your emotions and your intent when using it, so if you have a bad intent, the effects are pretty dark

Mallory Ethels goliath birdeater & koi fish Mallory had been to very few balls. Take this concept and add it with the concept that Mallory still didn't know what one was supposed to do at a ball led to a girl awkwardly standing around. She understood that, conceptually, she could be dancing amongst people or.... No, that was pretty much it. There was dancing.
And food! Food was an option. Albeit, Mallory didn't know if food counted as another thing to be 'doing' at a ball. She could already feel the slight cuff around her ear from her mother as she scolded Mallory on having the opportunity to have fun and dance and mingle and Mallory choosing to just stand around and eat food. But, no one really said Mallory wasn't a disappointment already so hip hip hooray for that.
On that note! Mallory made her way towards food. Hopefully a conversation or two just so Mallory could at least claim that this wasn't just a night full of nothingness.
Which it wasn't! Not to her at least. No, Mallory just loved- er. Standing around...
Okay! Right. So, food. The goliakoi started making movements towards the food before realizing that there was just so much food. She had stopped and was now staring at some tiny, soulless shrimp, waiting to be consumed. Who thought food was a good idea again?
Choosing that maybe, sitting back and watching everything was nice enough for a day. Who needed to do anything anyway? Making a wild and controlled spin (Mallory refused to be someone at fault for accidentally kicking a whole bunch food off the table just for a dramatic exit), but the absolute horror at witnessing what Mallory could only describe as a food monstrosity enter the mouth of a girl that Mallory associated with memes and great fanfiction.
So sue Mallory for having her jaw dropping open with a very light, hushed screech of "Eggy, what the frippity froppy bologna did you just eat?" She didn't mean to let it slip but still. THat looked disgusting. Which didn't say much as Mallory had a difficult relationship with food in the first place but that thing Eggy just ate? Mallory was certain anyone else would agree that it looked awful.

Elari Grimm snow leopard
Honestly? This was a pretty awkward moment, all things considering. Elari had very clearly forgotten Canna’s name and well...Canna obviously knew that and her behavior had instantly deflated from before. All within a minute Canna had gone from seemingly enjoying herself to looking exactly like how Elari felt when she missed out on the first copy of the recently released Book of Lore for the Weirdest Frontier franchise.
It had been a book that included in depth lore straight from the original author’s journals, journals that had only been found within the last couple years and used to create the Book of Lore.
It had been such a devastatingly disappointing day when Elari hadn’t been able to get the first copy - or even one of the first copies - of it. Sure everything was fine now that she had purchased a first addition from someone for a hefty price and bought two more copies of the exact same book - one to let people borrow and one for just her to enjoy - since clearly the first addition had to be kept in mint condition, but that was beside the point.
When she had failed originally to get that copy of the book, it had been a sad day, one she looked back on in disappointment, and although she didn’t know how she looked when it had happened, she imagined she looked something like how Canna looked now.
Sheer deflated disappointment.
Guilt pricked at her stomach as Elari looked away from Canna. She should’ve been able to remember her name, they were in the same year at TAS, they had met at least twice before, and Elari was a princess, someone that should know her future subjects names, like her papa did.
Though...she had already known that she wasn’t that great of a princess, that wasn’t anything new to her, but it still stung a little every time she proved that over and over again like she was doing here.
Not entirely sure how to proceed, Elari waited in silence for a couple moments before clearing her throat and pulling Canna forward a little more. ”Anyways, my bedroom is close now,” she explained, gesturing up the stairs.
Luckily it really wasn’t too long of a walk up to her bedroom and once she got there, she immediately opened the door to a large, spacious room with bookshelves lining the walls, a door that led out to her own personal balcony, another door with a doggy door underneath that led to Dory’s room, and blue, purple, and silver white decorations and coloring, with her bed pressed up in a corner, blue curtains pulled back to show at least half the bed that was completely covered from head to toe in far too many stuffed animals.
”Make yourself at home, I’m sure I have that book somewhere around here...” she commented, gesturing vaguely to her room for Canna to come in before immediately making her way to the bookshelves, scanning them over as she tried to find which one in particular she was looking for.
Her bookshelves were divided and organized into various categories to make it easier to find things and also just because Elari liked everything organized and color coded, she had even put a jinx on her books to color code them to fit the over all aesthetic of her room before.
On the other side of the room was where she kept her fiction books, sorted alphabetically and including a large number of different books. Many different copies of the Weirdest Frontier, books about feral cats living in their own rigid societies, romance novels that later got turned into a whole soap opera - that she may or may not watch - and everything else in between.
However she wasn’t looking for fiction right now, hence why she was focusing on the other side of her bookshelves, blue eyes scanning over her spell books as she looked for the one in particular that had the quick dry spell.
”Hmm, it’s not where it’s supposed to be...” she commented under her breath. ”Dory! Do you know where my copy of a Instant Dries is?” She asked, calling out for her familiar.
There was a pause, and then from the doggy door, out came a large checkered rabbit, aka: her familiar, Dory.
He hopped over, stopping once he passed Canna to look her over before continuing on to Elari, ”You bring company over and you think the most important thing right now is the lack of a book?” He asked, looking up at her with a rather unimpressed rabbit stare.
Elari wasn’t quite sure she understood, but to be fair, Dory always found things to bring up to deter from the actual conversation. ”Yeah, I need a drying spell for her suit,” she explained, gesturing back over to Canna.
Dory looked over at her for a moment before looking back to Elari and sighing. ”Well since you don’t remember, I’ll remind you that you let Enzo borrow your copy of Instant Dries a week ago after the ’milk’ incident and he hasn’t returned it yet,” Dory reminded.
Oh...right.
She really needed to get that book back from him at some point.
”Oh, right...”
”If you really need something to dry that suit though, you do own another drying spell book,” he reminded her and flicked his ears towards a book on the shelf.
Elari paused and turned to look at the book in question, cringing a little.
The Dumbest Ways to Dry.
Uncle Egg had given her that book for her birthday last year.
She...hadn’t used it yet, or even really read it over.
Well, now was as good a time of any.
Inhaling sharply, Elari took the book from the shelf and flicked through it. ”Alright, I’m not as familiar with the spells in this book, but I’m sure there’s something here that’ll help dry your tux and get rid of the stain,” she explained to Canna as she flicked through the book.

Eglantine Grimm peacock
As the food hit her stomach, Eggy expected...something, though she wasn’t quite sure what. Maybe she thought the mixture would be so vile that her stomach would immediately reject it and throw it all back up again, or maybe she thought it would give her superpowers or something like that, however none of that happened.
Her stomach gurgled a little.
That counted for something, right? The gurgle of her stomach? It was some sort of achievement, a small protest from her organs that this wasn’t the type of food it had wanted. It wasn’t much, but she was willing to take it.
Shrugging a little, Eggy made a move to grab more when her ears burned with the sound of her name, instantly picking up on it and swerving to see who had started talking either to or about her.
Turns out, the culprit was Mallory.
Eggy knew Mallory of course, she had joined her club: Memes and Memories, and Eggy made a point to know all her club members, it was a new club, especially since this was her first year at TAS, but already it had swelled in numbers and Eggy couldn’t bf prouder of her club baby, they grew up so fast, didn’t they?
That was one thing she was really looking forward to when school started up again, continuing with M&M - and yes she had chosen that acronym on purpose - meetings would be a lot of fun, especially after spring break, as Eggy was positive everyone had some great stuff to share.
Smiling, Eggy tilted her head and looked over at Mallory. ”What? Did you want some? I can make it for you too,” she said and stepped back slightly to gesture at the table of food. ”All the ingredients are right here, after all!” She added with a smirk.
Obviously she knew that wasn’t actually what Mallory had meant and considering she wasn’t a) Eggy herself or one of her more memable family members, a Cipher, or c) an imaginary talking zebra that calls you Kevin, she kind of doubted Mallory would actually wanna eat the monstrosity that Eggy had created.
Even still, Eggy couldn’t just not take the opportunity she had to see if she could somehow convince Mallory to try it. Eggy’s stomach might’ve been lame and totally okay with eating that thing, but maybe Mallory’s wouldn’t and they’d get to see some stomach action.
”Honestly it wasn’t even that bad, I’m kinda disappointed, I was hoping it would be really gross,” Eggy admitted with a causal shrug. The fact that neither the tastebuds on her tongue or the acid in her stomach had violently rejected her creation would always be something of utmost disappointment for Eggy.
Not much she could do about it now though, unless she wanted to try some even worse food combinations, which honestly, she would probably end up doing.
Gotta live that chaotic meme life the best you can after all, and that included gross food.
Don’t ask why, it just did.

ringed-tailed lemur/lion shifter
Balls were not Zoe's style. They always seemed too over-the-top, too frivolous for her liking. Give her a good old fashioned quest into the unknown or an underground party at some ancient ruins- now that was her type of social gathering. It also didn't help that the only balls she'd been too were because of school.
Growing up in Ganjal, fancy get-togethers seemed more of a fantasy than discovering gold underneath your house. Dresses and ball gowns were simply impractical in the dense jungle, and her parents weren't nearly important enough to be attending anything thrown by the Duke and Duchess. So instead of learning proper etiquette and slow dances, she learned to throw punches, climb cliffs, and navigate the dense forests that she called home.
Of course, none of those skills really helped her here- navigating around people was somehow harder than the jungle.
Still, she liked to think she cleaned up nicely. Her dark brown hair was pulled back into a braid, loose curls brushing against the back of her neck. Instead of a dress, she'd chosen a black jumpsuit and paired it with silver heels and a necklace.
She spent the beginning of the ball wandering around aimlessly. Sure, she could have joined in with those dancing, or mingled around the tables of food, but that would mean interacting with someone. It would mean acknowledging the crowds surrounding her.
Everything was going good until someone bumped into her. It was more of a brush- it didn't even spill the drink in her hand- but it was still enough to change her whole mood. A crowd in Gangal was barely ten people, but here it seemed like everyone was on a secret mission to pack every room. After a brief apology, she headed to the edge of the room, her breathing shallow. Everywhere around her people moved. It was a dance of chaos, an order of disorder, and her brain could barely process it. She needed to sit down- or to find a place to catch her breath- but of course there wasn't any.
Stop. Her brain hissed, as she dug her heels into the ground. Just stop moving. She wasn't sure if she was talking about herself, or the room around her.
When she was little her mother would calm her fears. When they'd travel deep into the jungle she'd simply whisper 'don't be afraid, my little lioness- one day you will rule the forest' and everything would be better. Zoe had focused on memorizing every trail- every plant, every animal that roamed the forests. Things became less scary- less overwhelming after she knew their secrets.
But she doubted she would ever understand balls- understand people really, like she did the jungle. And her mother wasn't her to help her through things tonight.
Pushing her way to a wall, she put her drink on the ground- pausing to wipe her palms on the sides of her jumpsuit. Not the best way to treat her formal clothing- but she needed to do something with her hands.Taking a deep breath, Zoe forced her eyes closed. She knew it would be better to try to find an empty corridor, or go outside, but she didn't trust her legs to carry her far. No, instead she made a promise to herself. She would not leave that wall- no matter who asked her- until she could calm her racing heart.

Mallory Ethels goliath birdeater & koi fish Mallory could feel her face scrunch up in disgust despite her best attempts to keep the look off her face. It was reflex when being offered something that looked - and what Mallory imagined, smelled - horrendous. And Mallory knew that it was super duper rude to make a face like that in response to being offered something but she just couldn't help it.
Attempting to tone down the horror across in her face and relax it some, Mallory tried to massage her cheeks with her hands before responding. "Uh, no thanks. It uh- looks plenty pleasant and all, but mix-matched food doesn't sound.... super appealing to me?" She knew she squeaked a little at the end, but that was because she also felt bad for saying no to something that could be construed as polite.
Oh. Eggy was smiling.
"Oh thank god, you're not serious," Mallory felt the words escaping her mouth before she really had a chance to make an effort to keep them in. She winced at the sound of her voice afterwards, squeaking out an extra little, "Sorry!"
It was a really close call on whether or not Mallory would continue to ramble about the apology and that she hadn't really meant to be rude but the sheer idea of eating whatever it was Eggy had just eaten made Mallory feel sick to her stomach, which also wasn't a very uncommon occurrence. Food in general had that effect on Mallory and Mallory wasn't entirely sure why, so it also wasn't just the fact that Eggy's food looked horrifying. For all Mallory knew all food was horrifying!
And she was rambling to herself inside her own brain. Good job Mallory, you dunce!
Mallory's shock doubled, however, as Eggy mentioned that it wasn't bad. If Mallory hadn't had bug eyes this far, she certainly did now. "Wait, wait, wait- You're telling me you found that good?" Okay so, technically Eggy said it wasn't bad, but Mallory could only associate that as being good. The only good food was the food that wasn't that bad and that monstrosity- it didn't make sense that it would be good.
Then she doubled back on what Eggy said. "Wait, you were hoping it would be gross?"

Canna Kingsleigh irish setter shifter
Canna really should have expected something like this. Why would Elari know her name out of everybody else? It wasn’t like Canna was some important person in the kingdom, so it made sense as to why the princess wouldn’t specifically know her name, she had more important people to worry about knowing their names. And really, Canna shouldn’t be getting as worked up over this as she was. Elari hadn’t completely not known her name, so that was something at least, right? The princess knew her name after singing her little song, so Elari still knew Canna’s name, it just...it just hadn’t been an instant thing of ‘Oh, I know your name’. It was so dumb for her to be getting upset about this, but here she was, upset about it all, and then later she was more than likely going to go somewhere only she would be and sulk for hours upon hours. This was the kind of upset that would keep her up all night, she could already tell that, and that only made her hate this even more. It shouldn’t even be that big of a deal, but yet...here she was, and for some reason Elari not remembering her name right away just hit a sore spot.
Idiot, she snapped at herself inwardly.
It was no secret to Canna that she had ruined the overall mood of everything at this point. There was a silence between the two girls, and while Canna could sometimes handle silence, this was the kind of quiet that didn’t settle right with her and made her feel all squirmy and icky on the inside. It was an awkward silence, at least for her, and she hated that she was the cause of it. As much as she tried to not show how upset she was, she was sure Elari had picked up on it. Maybe she should apologize for her behavior, but apologizing wasn’t something Canna did. Apologizing was admitting to being the problem, and while Canna could and would admit to being the problem on many occasions, it was the fact that apologies were supposed to express regret in causing those problems, Canna didn’t regret causing problems. She did this one, but even if she tried to tell Elari that she was sorry she knew the words would fall short on her tongue and never come out. It would probably just be best if she didn’t try to say anything at all.
There was nothing more said until Elari broke the silence to tell Canna they were almost to her room. On any other occasion the thought of being alone with Elari in her room would have sparked all kinds of wild fantasies in Canna’s mind, but she couldn’t even find a spark of excitement inside her right now. She hated herself even more right now because of that - she was ruining a moment she would have otherwise loved if not for ruining it like she had. Everything about this moment was messed up because of Canna, and she wasn’t sure how she could fix it. Perhaps she could pretend she was okay, but Elari had already picked up on her distress, or at least Canna was sure she had, and pretending to be okay might make things worse. Though it could make things better… Ugh, Canna wasn’t sure. Point was, she had no idea how to go about this and fix it and that made her dejection just turn into frustration.
Once inside Elari’s room there was no elation in her mood. Canna would have thought she’d be beyond ecstatic to get the chance to be with Elari in her room, but that wasn’t the case here. Instead the most she did was head over to a corner and lean against it, sullenly taking in the layout of the princess’s room. It was pretty much how Canna expected the room of a princess to look. Elegant, spacious, and comfortable. Even in her mood she couldn’t deny it was a lovely room, but she was sure she would have found it even more grand if not for the fact that she was being an emotional idiot and letting gross feelings get in the way of enjoying herself.
What really tipped her off in knowing she was in a pretty sour mood was the fact that she didn’t even feel much of a response toward the giant rabbit - Elari had called him Dory - and his snarky comment as he made his way into the room. On any other occasion she would have found that to be more than just amusing, but everything was lacking for Canna right now all because she was dumb about the whole name thing.
It wasn’t until Elari directly spoke up to Canna that she even turned her full attention back to the princess. ”That’s fine,” she replied with a nonchalant shrug. ”I’m sure whatever spell you use will work.” Short and simple were her responses now. Canna probably wouldn't be able to make a long ramble right now like she had been doing earlier. At this point she was just ready to get this stain dried and taken care of so her and Elari could go back to the ball and go their separate ways - well, Canna assumed they wouldn’t stick together after this whole thing, which was upsetting, but not as much as it would have been if Canna didn’t let herself get lost in being upset.

Clover Cipher demon/unicorn/red panda/fennec fox
Now, quite frankly, Clover was here to have a good time. Balls were basically just fancier parties, and who didn’t like a good party? Parties were full of interesting people, people doing party things that they wouldn’t usually be doing unless it was a party. Even Clover had actually put herself in a dress for this, though it wasn’t like she minded dresses, especially ones like this, with the half black, half purple, striking, sort of abstract dress that led down to the poof-y skirt portion of the dress that would make anyone feel like a princess. It was fun, plus it had pockets and what girl didn’t love a good pocket?
As if to prove her point, Clover jammed her hands into the pockets of the dress and pulled out some neatly wrapped candy that she had swiped from the kitchen as soon as she had the chance to disappear. This place always had the best candy, and no matter how fancy the buffet was, it could never compare to a good candy bar.
Grinning at the candy she had pulled out, Clover gave a small little bounce. ”I forgot all about you!” She told it.
Then she held it out a little and tore just enough of the wrapper to make it look like it had a - sort of creepy - smiley face as she gently bounced it around. ”How rude! I’ve been your buddy ever since you got to this ball!” She said in an over exaggerated “proper” voice.
Frowning, Clover placed one hand on her hip. ”I forgot how snobby royal candy can be,” she commented and without giving the candy bar a chance to respond, she shoved nearly the entire thing in her mouth, wrapper and all.
No use keeping a snobby chocolate bar around when she could just eat it instead.
Working her way through the chocolate, Clover ended up deciding the easiest thing to do in this case was to just attempt and swallow it whole, taking chewing out of the equation entirely, this wasn’t something she should be able to do, but she had a lot of practice in swallowing things whole, and she liked to think that the demon part of her allowed her to unlock some traits that really shouldn’t be human, like unhinging her her and swallowing a good sized candy bar whole.
Once it was all the way down, Clover wiped her mouth with the back of her hand and looked around, trying to take in everything she possibly could.
It wasn’t like she had never been to the palace before, though she hadn’t been here often and this was an entirely new set of decorations than there had been in the past, plus new people, new sounds, new scents, new interactions, new everything and it could be a lot to take in for anyone, even Clover.
Which actually, on that train of thought...
Clover tilted her head to the side as her mismatched eyes caught sight of someone that kinda seemed to be having a hard time. This was also something she was used to.
Though Clover had never been the one to be freaking out against a wall, she had been there for Paya before when things became a little too much for her younger sister, and she had been there for her cousin Calvin as well - someone that was well acquainted with being overwhelmed - and this time, well this time it didn’t seem like the person in question had a Clover to help them through whatever it was they were going through.
...Hey wait a minute, she was a Clover that could help.
Glancing down at her body as if to make sure that she was in fact Clover, the young Cipher girl straightened up and started walking over to the other girl with determination in her every step until she had reached the wall and casually leaned against it right next to the other girl.
”Hey, wanna try some royal chocolate? It’s kinda snobby but it still tastes good,” she said with a smile, not sure if the other girl could hear her right now, but if anything, she figured it was a start and that’s what counted here, right?

At Mallory’s reactions, Eggy couldn’t help the loud bark of laughter that escaped her as she threw her head back a little and clasped her hands over her stomach. ”Oh man! Mal! Your reactions are hilarious! That right there could be turned into so many memes!” She got out in between her laugh, grinning over at the other girl brightly.
Honestly, Eggy wasn’t sure what she expected, most people would react in horror when you shoved an abomination like that down your throat, but this was just...well this was absolutely priceless, that’s what this was. Eggy enjoyed it way too much.
”Don’t worry, I’d never actually make you eat that,” she promised and glanced from side to side. ”Now if I find Bee though, that’s different,” she added under her breath. If she found her cousin, she was totally gonna make her try the weird food combination as well. Same goes to either of her older brothers if she could find them.
Eggplant would probably be a lot more willing to try it than Lolly was but she knew she could get Lolly to do it too if she really wanted to.
Turning her attention back to Mallory, Eggy nodded along with her questions. ”Oh yeah, I was hoping it would be disgusting, bad enough to make me throw up or something, but it wasn’t actually that bad, it actually kinda tasted good, not gonna lie,” she explained and cast a glance back over to the buffet of food, her brows furrowing as she frowned at it.
Food had once again betrayed her by tasting good.
”Food’s just such a waste of time, y’know? If I was gonna spend time doing something else other than my usual, it would be something fun, like lying around naked on the bathroom floor or turning into a peahen and seeing how many people I can trick into thinking I’m an actual bird, or something like that,” she explained, folding her arms as she shook her head in disgruntlement. ”But sadly, bodies gotta eat or we die and while I’m totally okay with the earth reclaiming my slowly decaying dead body, I’d prefer to do that at the ripe age of sixty nine instead of thirteen,” Eggy explained with a small, casual shrug, figuring that was enough of an answer for the weird food situation.
She was serious though, Eggy had already planned out her eventual death, she would be sixty nine years old and on April 20th, she’d cause as much chaos as possible and then take a long walk in the woods and just lie down and die, letting the world reclaim her body and feed it to the bugs and the snakes and whatever other creature wanted to get a piece of old lady Eggy in her decaying days, and then her ghost would go off and continue to do as Eggy do until it got bored and ghost died or something.
...could ghosts die?
She’d have to look into that, because a ghost dying made for an excellent story idea and she definitely had to do it now.

Elari Grimm snow leopard
The silence was almost unbearable, and that was coming from someone that enjoyed silence more often than not. However in this case, Elari knew that she had messed up by forgetting Canna’s name, she probably should have just continued to avoid using her name until she could sing in private and then remember what her name was. That would’ve been the best option, but Elari had gotten so caught up in...in their conversation, and had wanted to remember her name so badly that she hadn’t thought about the wiser way to go about it.
This worked as only more proof that she would never make it as queen one day. She would just have to die before her fathers did, it would be tragic sure, but at least then she wouldn’t be able to turn the kingdom into a tragedy. Either that or her fathers would simply have to become immortal and live forever, because there was no way that Elari would ever be ready to take over the throne.
The world would probably end the first day she ruled.
Sighing under her breath, Elari glanced back over to Canna, who had found herself a place to stay out of the way, and well....she just...she looked so disheartened, like a puppy in an animal shelter that hadn’t been adopted yet, how was Elari supposed to just leave her like that when she looked so sad? Especially when Canna had been so sweet to her during their conversation.
She had never questioned why the crown princess was sitting in alone in a room with a book and a cup of chocolate, she had never tried to get Elari back out there to socialize with others, she hadn’t made fun of Elari’s use of the word “dapper” or anything else like that either. Instead she had been perfectly kind and sweet and the least Elari could’ve done was remember her name.
She had certainly ruined the easy conversation they had been having, but maybe...maybe there was still a way to fix this.
Tapping her fingers against the cover of the book, she closed it and turned back to her shelves, scanning over the alphabetical books until she found what she was looking for and pulled out her diary.
She took a breath and looked back to Canna, then down at the diary, then back up at Canna.
She hadn’t ever shared the contents of her diary with someone before, but maybe in this case, it would help.
Letting out a shaky breath, Elari took both the books and walked over to Canna, offering her a hesitant smile, unsure if Canna even wanted to deal with her right now.
She paused for a second, words hitching in her throat before she pushed past it and spoke up. ”...I’m sorry I didn’t remember your name right away, it’s been...stressful recently, with the ball and spring break ending soon and...well none of that is an excuse, and I’m not trying to make an excuse, I just...I’m sorry,” she apologized, waiting a moment or so to try and gauge Canna’s reaction.
Then, with a shaky breath, Elari held up her diary. ”I might not have remembered your name right away, but I did remember you,” she explained and brought the book back down, opening it up and quickly flipping through it until she found the date she was looking for.
Gulping a little, Elari pushed past her nerves again and shoved the diary back over at Canna for her to read, pointing down to the page in question. ”See? Right here-“ she said, tapping the page with the tip of her finger.
Jan 15th
Dear Diary, today I visited the class for the troublemaking students, there were a lot more than I had thought there would be and I instantly became overwhelmed, how was I supposed to make a difference in any of their lives when I couldn’t even work up the courage to speak? However that’s when I saw someone sitting in the back, Canna Kingsleigh, I had met her once before: last year, while we were both waiting to speak with Headmistress Singh.
Naturally, I had been there to get approval for a new garden in the school grounds, (which I got of course) and Canna had been there because she stapled someone. I haven’t ever met anyone with quite enough moxy (moxi? moxie?) to do something like that...well, there’s Enzo, but he didn’t use a stapler. Quite frankly I’m not even sure how you can get the staple to work like that, but you know how it is, anything can be a weapon nowadays.
Anyways, when I had first met her, she had been incredibly nice to me, and seeing her again in that class reassured me that so long as she was there, I could do this, because even if I was a complete disaster, at least I knew that at least one person in that class wouldn’t think I was, at least one person was happy I was there and that was good enough for me, she gave me courage when I had none and that’s when I decided that maybe I could help some of these students after all.
~ Yours Truly Elari
There were a couple other pages that included some of her thoughts on Canna, but Elari wasn’t quite sure she was ready to share those with the other girl. Her diary was very personal for her, a place she shared some of her inner thoughts and feelings, a place that she could be whoever she wanted to be - namely herself - without all the pressures of reality that came with it. She didn’t have to act like the perfect princess or pretend like she knew what she was doing.
She could simply...be and that was perhaps the most intimate thing about having a diary, that you were allowed to write our thoughts and feelings that simply couldn’t be shared with the outside world.
Sharing even a small snippet of that with Canna...well it wasn’t something she would’ve done under normal circumstances, but Canna had looked so sad and every time she had spoken to the other girl, she had been nothing but nice.
This...this was the least she could do to try and cheer her up.

Canna Kingsleigh irish setter shifter
Why did her emotions have to pick now to be upset? Now wasn’t a good time, and Canna was starting to get frustrated with that. She was upset that Elari hadn’t actually remembered her name and now she was starting to get frustrated that she was upset, which wasn’t making for a very good combination. She could handle just being frustrated, but that clearly wasn’t the case here. Being sad and dejected was something else entirely, and Canna hated it. Maybe if this was in the comfort of her own little area she could do better with handling the sadness that had welled up inside of her like an unwelcome guest, but she wasn’t in a place she knew well - she didn’t know Elari’s room at all save for what she knew from a first glance. Plus it would probably be rude if she shoved Elari out of her own room, and while Canna had no problem doing that to some people, she wouldn’t do that to the princess, upset or not. There were just some boundaries Canna wouldn’t cross, and being mean to Elari was one of those things.
If Canna would actually get over herself and stop sulking, she would have offered to help Elari with locating the spell book she needed. The Irish setter shifter wasn’t the best with books, but she could at least help out and speed up this process. By now Canna was just ready to get back to the ball, well, she didn’t want to go back to the ball while she was still obviously upset, but it would probably be easier for her to act like she was perkier than she was now when surrounded by people that she didn’t have such an emotional attachment to like she did with Elari. Not being remembered by the princess hit a spot that Canna hadn’t realized would be so sore, a spot she was sure wouldn’t be this sore had somebody else hit it instead.
Rather than be helpful or something of the sorts, Canna remained where she stood off in the corner. Every so often she would look away from the floor to glance toward Elari. Even upset Canna could still point out to herself how beautiful the princess was. It somewhat frustrated her even more that even right now she found Elari to be angelic, frustrated that the attraction was still there, but at the same time she understood that she wasn’t upset at Elari for this, she was upset at herself. It wasn’t Elari’s fault that Canna was overreacting to the name thing so it made no sense to be upset at Elari for it all. This was something Canna knew was her fault and she would take the blame for that, especially if it meant keeping Elari faultless.
The sound of footsteps heading her way snapped Canna out of her thoughts. She glanced up slowly while keeping her gaze downcast just enough so that maybe Elari wouldn’t see the sad frustration gleaming in her eyes.
There was a few seconds there that Canna just looked at Elari as if she was trying to piece together what the princess was saying. Why was she apologizing? That didn’t make any sense. ”I’m not…” She trailed off, knowing she couldn’t tell Elari that she wasn’t upset. Canna couldn’t lie to the princess like that. But that left Canna with a lot of other feelings she wasn’t sure how to process though she did know she felt terrible for acting in a way that made Elari feel like she had to apologize for something that wasn’t her fault.
Eyes going wide, Canna shook her head. ”No, no, you don’t have anything to apologize for. You didn’t do anything wrong.” She really hadn’t, and while Canna doubted she could get Elari to see it that way, she was determined to at least try and she was for sure going to let the princess know this wasn’t her fault. ”You’ve got so much to worry about, more than I can even begin to imagine, of course you’re not going to remember a name or two right away.” Especially a name of somebody like me, she added to herself mentally, not daring to say that out loud to Elari.
It took a few seconds before Canna realized that what Elari was holding up was a diary. She wanted to ask what the princess was doing with it but stopped herself, listening to what the princess was saying now. Her breath caught in her throat when she started to piece together what Elari was meaning by all this. The frustrated dejection cleared from her blue eyes and turned into a silent awe mixed with deep curiosity and anticipation. Was there something about Canna inside Elari’s diary? There was no way Elari would dedicate a few sentences or words about Canna in her own personal book. Why would the princess do that? But yet...why would she stand there and get Canna’s hopes up if it wasn’t true?
With hands visibly shaking, the canine shifter took the diary from Elari and looked down at the open page. She had to read it a few times over to make sure she wasn’t imagining it all and when she finally realized all of this was real and not some figment of her imagination, the only response she could initially give was a squeak-whine that was reminiscent to that of an excited dog crying in response to the question of “wanna go on a walk”. Out of impulse she ducked her face down into the diary to hide the bright red blush that painted her face, more squeak-whines escaping her as she tried to calm herself down and actually remember how to breathe. Eventually she was able to breathe again, but she still had her face hidden against the pages of the diary, and in a rush voice with no pauses between the words, she mumbled between the pages, ”Youwroteawholethingaboutme, youreallydidthat.”
A few more squeaks later, Canna was finally able to bring the diary away from her face - it was still bright red she was sure of that - and turn to look back at Elari while she handed the diary back to the princess, hands still shaking. ”You...you wrote about me,” she breathed and then stopped, a thought going through her mind that left her feeling somewhat guilty. ”I haven’t put anything about you in a diary. I mean, I don’t write or anything like that, but if I did it would be all about you, I’d write about you all the time, just...Elari everywhere.” She gave a quick motion with her hands at that. It wasn’t long after all that had spilled out that she realized what she had gone on a tangent about and, once again, her face flushed warmer than she even thought possible. ”There...there would be other things I’d write about, too.” Oh yeah, like saying that was going to save her at this point. There was no way she could deny her ramble, and that last comment was a struggle to say to the point that even Canna knew it wasn’t the truth. If she did the whole diary thing it would be full of little comments and passages about the princess, there was no way Canna could come in and deny that fact.

ringed-tailed lemur/lion shifter
Zoe was not having a good time. After what had seemed like ten minutes of torture, she had managed to pry herself off the wall- trusting her feet to hold her up. Of course she couldn't mingle back into the crowds because not only did that mean risking someone else running her over, but it would mean leaving the sweat mark that she'd imprinted into the royal palace's wall before it had evaporated.
So rather unfortunately, she was left with her own thoughts.
The first distraction that hopped into her mind was the school year. After all, the ball marked the end of spring break and the beginning of classes starting up again. If she completed this year she would graduate and be forced into "the real world". It was funny- she knew many of her peers were nervous about leaving the academy behind. Good riddance, she thought to herself, I can't wait to get out of here.
Perhaps a bit sad, but definitely the truth. She hadn't made any deep friendships in her three prior years here, and between the constant crowds and lack of adventures- nothing was really there to make her want to stay. Each year she would miss the cool shade of the jungle- the dense forest hiding mysteries. Most summers she'd spend tagging along to her mother's archeological assignments, together they'd dive deep into the overgrowth and secrets. Nothing the school offered her would ever come close to that.
A voice broke through her thoughts- forcing her eyes open. Her brow furrowed, "Chocolate?" she asked. Her mouth dry, the word seemed half choked out. Which probably wouldn't be different, even if she was in a more stable mood. But seriously, who walks up to someone and offers them chocolate? Who just has chocolate on them?
Looking at the other girl in front of her, she tried desperately to put a name to her face. No luck.
Shaking her head she tried to collect her composure- rocking back on her heels and crossing her arms. "Chocolate," she repeated, unsure how to reply. Sure what... the girl was offering her was a nice gesture, she wasn't the biggest chocolate fan. But surely it would be easier to just go along with whatever she wanted- that way the conversation would probably be over the quickest. "Uh, sure?"

← Tiffany Finch → spring ball || lionhead rabbit || @open
Being the twenty-third child of an already large family had made Tiffany very good at one thing- catching attention.
Even now, as she swept her way across the ballroom floor, the young woman could feel several pairs of eyes upon her. It was something she relished, that attention. It made her feel powerful, beautiful, desired. She was special here, a glimmering diamond on the dance floor. Even if they didn't know her name, Twenty-Three would make sure they remembered her long after this night.
As the swell of music faded, Tiffany gave a light curtsy to the cute blonde she had been dancing with, a coy smile playing upon her lips. He was a wonderful dancer, and complemented her wonderfully. Maybe she would seek him out for another dance later. Maybe, if they really hit it off, she would even ask him his name.
Tiffany had been dancing most of the time she'd spent here, her heeled feet slowly growing sore as she waltzed, tangoed, and foxtrotted across the glimmering floor. A different partner each time, some she asked, some that had asked her. It never hurt to make new connections. Tiffany vaguely recognized most of the students here, but she had never made a habit of memorizing the names of anyone but her closest friends. They were the only ones who deserved it, really.
Flitting across the floor, Tiffany paused briefly to exchange words with a few other groups of students. Nothing serious, just making light small talk. She wanted to make sure they knew she'd been here, even if they hadn't seen her elsewhere. Although she'd worn her pristine white gown to catch even more attention tonight, one could never be too careful. Slight smiles, delicate laughs, and graceful steps marked her presence, every move calculated and intensely noted by the author. Just making an impact wasn't quite enough. It needed to be a good impression as well.
Eventually, Twenty-Three found her way to a small empty table, slowly lowering herself to sit. A gloved hand held a small glass of water she had picked up from a waiter, gently placing it on the table itself. Tiffany half wished she had managed to gather an actual glass of champagne, but this would suffice. It wouldn't be very becoming for her to get drunk at a ball like this anyways.
Carefully crossing her ankles under the hem of her gown, Tiffany folded her hands into her lap, taking a keen glance around the ballroom. Balls like this were only good for two things- gathering attention and gossip.
The young woman took note of the students hanging to the edges of the crowd, the groups chatting, the various outfits worn by partygoers, and, of course, the couples dancing together. Everything would make a wonderful tale at a later date, either to her own friends or the friends of the parties involved. Didn't they deserve to know if their companion was dancing with a new student, or if their best friend was spotted talking to someone in the corner? It was up to Twenty-Three to gather this news, of course. She wouldn't trust anyone else to do it.
Taking a slow sip of her water, Tiffany chuckled to herself. Balls really were wonderful affairs, weren't they?

Izzy was not cut out for balls. Like honestly, who had time to sit all pretty like that? It was boring. Even Carrie being around hadn't helped Izzy calm down so much. There was nothing to do and all the food was way too fancy.
Which was why she had decided to make s convienice store run.
Bouncing on her heels, Izzy impatiently waited for the tired clerk to ring up her items. It wasn't much, but it should keep her and Carrie fed through the rest of the party. A family-sized bag of Cool Ranch Dewritos for Carrie, a six pack of Mountain Do, and, of course, a frozen bag of Dino Nuggets. There probably wasn't a stove at the ball, but that was fine. Izzy liked eating them cold too.
The cashier said something Izzy didn't really hear, so she just handed him the ten she had yoinked from Carrie's clutch. "Keep the change," she called out behind her, grabbing her plastic bag of items and rushing out the door with a half wave.
The night was suprisingly mild for spring, and Izzy was once again glad she hadn't brought a jacket even though her mom had really wanted her to. A jacket would have probably ruined her outfit, too. Ruffled sleeves didn't do well under a jacket. The jean shorts probably would have been fine, though. Izzy didn't get cold easily either way, so there was no point in worrying over it. She needed to get back soon anyways.
Grabbing her skateboard from the bike rack, Izzy began skidding her way back towards the ball, plastic bag in hand. Carrie would probably have killed her if she knew she was riding without a helmet again, but viva la revolution. Izzy liked the way the wind caught her white ponytail, whipping it backwards to pull at her head. It felt nice, and it added a challenge to staying balanced on the board. She hadn't been skating for too long- just took it up at the beginning of spring- but it reminded her a lot of snowboarding. Which she was very good at.
There weren't many people out on the streets this late, although Isabelle did have to skirt her way around a few people. She always gave them a wave and a smile, even if it seemed like they weren't really paying attention. Maybe she would have tried some tricks to impress them if she was feeling up to it. But no, she really had to get back, huh. Sad.
It took about ten minutes for Izzy to finally arrive back at the ball. Hopping off the skateboard, she carefully kicked it underneath Carrie's car. The doorman had vetoed her taking it in earlier, which was honestly a tragedy. Hopefully it would be okay out here for a little bit longer. That taken care of, Izzy made her way back up to the grand doors, plastic bag in arm. Hopefully that worrywart wouldn't stop her from bringing this in too.
He didn't, luckily, although he did need to search the bag. That didn't take too long, however, and soon Izzy was back out in the ballroom. She stood out like a sore thumb in here. Not only just being 7'1", but also the fact that she was dressed incredibly casual with sneakers. Everyone else had at least tried to dress formal. Izzy didn't really see the need. Popping open the bag of nuggets, she popped one into her mouth. She had gotten very good at ignoring what other people thought.
Scanning the room as she chewed, Izzy tried to spot her sister. Carrie would be the one in the overly edgy dress, probably on her own… oh, there! "Hey, Carrie!" Izzy called out, waving the plastic bag as she walked towards her older sister. "Snack run success!"

Having only been at the ball for an hour, Jasper was ready to leave it. Sure, it was a nice gesture and all, but balls were just so tiresome. Walk over there and talk to some people, then walk over there and talk to some new people. And the people at the ball weren't even that interesting. Sure royalty and all was cool, but he never actually found himself in a conversation with anyone of high status. All the nobodies just wanted to talk about 'school' and 'grades' and 'friends'.
How boring, he thought, shaking his head. If anyone here actually shared my interests maybe coming back to school wouldn't feel like a funeral.
He'd spent his spring break back at home with his brothers. While they weren't the greatest company, he still enjoyed racing little Petey and surfing with Neil, Ryan, and Blue. Even the toddler had managed to carry a conversation better than his peers.
Plucking an imaginary speck of dust off his suit jacket- he glanced over the crowd. There were people dancing, people gathered around the food tables, as well as the people just aimlessly standing around. How exciting.
At least this would be his last ball. This was his last year at the academy and he would be lying if he said he wasn't ready to leave it behind. Sure he'd made some friends- hell he'd even managed to learn some things, but he had no real strings to the school. He wasn't even attached to the way of life he'd adopted. Eating whenever he liked, ditching classes- even attending balls, it was all too much. Sure he might tell Ryan that the school was 'super fun' and he'd had 'many life-changing experiences' there but that was just to settle his little brother's nerves. The poor kid was worried about his first shift- the entire spring break he kept rambling on about things that could go wrong and what if he didn't actually have an animal form.
He'd somehow believed that Jasper would be the perfect candidate to vent all his problems too. Even when Jasper tried to get him to talk to Blue about it he just said he didn't want bother him when he was working. Typical, he thought to himself. Graduate and call yourself a writer, then you can just say you're constantly working whenever one of the ankle-biters comes to bother you.
For as much as he complained- he couldn't help but look up to Blue. He supposed he'd been just like Ryan when he was twelve, and he couldn't remember Blue ever being cold to him. The man had way too much patience.
He wondered if Blue would have enjoyed the ball tonight- or if, like him, he would be miserable. His mother always said that her sons were never the formal-type. They needed the fresh-air and open spaces. They definitely did not need suits and ties and shoes that were uncomfortably clean.
Sighing, he dragged himself to the quieter side of the room, hoping that he would make it through the night without anyone bothering him.
