Birch Cipher demon/red panda/fennec fox/unicorn shifter
The only thing that had stopped him from gouging out and eating one of his brother's eyes had been the fact that if he had done that, Popcorn would win the Cipher family bet, and Birch wasn't about to be the reason his younger brother lost an eye before he did.
Listen, Birch loved his family, but he wasn't about to lose this bet and let somebody else win. He wanted to be the winner, and he was sure if he tried hard enough he would eventually have something so traumatic happen to him that he'd end up losing an eye and he'd sashay his way right on over to the adults' table at family gatherings. He couldn't wait for that moment where he arrived to the gathering, hiding his face as he did, and then once everybody in his family was there he'd dramatically reveal his face to show the missing eye and the cool scar that went with it. He'd be hailed as the Chosen One, the Cipher to beat all other Ciphers. He'd make his family proud.
Plus, he could rub it in all his siblings and cousins' faces that he, Birch Cipher, had been the first to lose an eye out of their generation. They would all have to bow down to him and praise him when he decided to grace them with his holy presence. He'd be like a hero, a king really.
A king. He could be like a T. Rex, the king of dinosaurs. Sure, he preferred the smaller, faster dinosaurs, but he wasn't about to pass up the chance to be a one-eyed Cipher Dino King. Honestly, Birch couldn't wait for the day to arrive in which he lost an eye. Hopefully it would happen soon.
Which, okay, back to the whole thing that had started this train of thought in the first place.
After his whole family had arrived - well, not his whole family, a few of his older siblings were too old to really attend a high school ball - Birch had split away from his siblings and headed straight for the buffet table. That was something he always enjoyed about TAS, the fact that they usually had some pretty good food, and fancy too. Not that the food back home was terrible or anything, in fact, he loved it, but there was something a lot more exciting about fancy food. It was one of those things he could stare at for a long moment, think of the whole “it would be a shame for something to happen to you” meme, and then go absolutely wild on the chosen meal. He could unlock his inner feral demon and pretend he was ripping the intestines out of whatever food he was eating. Birch was like some messy velociraptor tearing into the stomach of a freshly slain smaller dinosaur, blood and guts covering his face like the ferocious predator he was.
It was one thing to do that at home where it was kinda normal, but here at the school? Not so much. It was fun to get various reactions from other people when faced with Birch’s feral tendencies.
Anyway, after ditching his siblings behind and heading for the buffet table, he had been peacefully minding his own business, adding a ton of sweets to his plate, when out of nowhere Popcorn popped out from underneath the table and grabbed Birch’s leg which caused Birch to startle pretty badly; of course his response to that had been fight or flight, and being a Cipher he went in for the kill. Birch had thrown down his plate of food, unsure as to where it had gone even now, and grabbed ahold of his brother as tight as he could. At that point he still had no idea it was Popcorn, and so he had went a bit easy on him at first, but as soon as he realized it was just one of his brothers Birch had tried to assert his dominance even more, to the point he had almost went for gouging out one of Popcorn’s eyes only to stop when he remembered the bet. That was why Popcorn had both eyes still, if not for the bet he’d be down an eye. He’d be down an eye and there would be no chance of Popcorn ever getting it back because Birch would have eaten it right then and there. It would probably taste good, too.
All that aside, after the quick scuffle Popcorn had slithered on back to do whatever Popcorns did at balls - probably try and pop out on more people to scare them like the weird cryptid boy he was - and Birch had gone off to do his own thing. He had briefly wondered where his other siblings had run off to, namely Clover as she was his twin, but he didn’t feel a connection in their twin powers tonight so he wasn’t too caught up on being with her. Besides, the girls here were all dressed up which, to Birch, only made them look grosser than usual, and he had seen Clover in her ball attire and he could confirm she was extra gross tonight.
Deciding he didn’t want to go looking for one of his siblings, Birch glanced around the large room for signs of anybody that looked interesting. After the run in with Popcorn he wasn’t really feeling the need to eat, he’d do that later though as he wasn’t about to miss out on ball food, but he did like the idea of socializing now. Show off how messy he now looked after the little skirmish with his younger brother. If he was going to be the alpha Cipher then he had to show the entire world that he was a force to be reckoned with.
Fortunately it didn’t take the demon hybrid to set his sights on some poor, unsuspecting guy. Birch wasn’t sure if he even knew the guy, but that didn’t matter to him as he scurried off toward him. It occurred to him that the guy probably wanted to be left alone considering he had been off on his own in a low profile area of the ballroom, but that didn’t matter to Birch. If anything that made him all the more curious about this guy.
Once he was close enough Birch gave a bounce to try and grab the other guy’s attention before calling over, ”Hey, you seem like you wanna be alone, so how much do I gotta push your buttons before you threaten to rip my eye out?”

Carrie wished she could enjoy the ball. As she swept through crowds in her red and black gown, she wished Izzy hadn't left so early. Sure her sister may have dressed like she was going out to see a movie with friends rather than attending a formal event at the palace, but Izzy always knew how to cheer her up.
But alas, her sister was on the very important quest for good snack food.
Feeling her stomach gurgle, she drifted over to the food table, grabbing a few handfuls of food before scurrying away. The food here might be too tiny and exotic for her taste, but she didn't want to entertain guests with a song from her starving stomach.
Plopping down on the ballroom floor, she examined the food she'd snatched. A few vegetables and fruits- even a small desert. It would be enough to get her through the night if Izzy never returned.
Which would be bad. Izzy not returning. Part of her had wanted to run with her sister to the store- but Izzy seemed so excited to have a purpose for that old skateboard she'd brought with her and Carrie didn't think she could keep up in heels.
Still if her mom and dad found out that she'd let her sister skateboard off into the night without supervision they would kill her. Or at least lecture her. One of those long and boring lectures where they threw around buzz words like 'safety', 'responsibility', and 'Izzy is fourteen and about as mature as a toddler what were you thinking'. Like she didn't already know that.
Stuffing the last treat into her mouth, she quietly brushed the crumbs out of her lap- letting out a sigh of relief when she saw there was no stain on her dress. She'd put a lot of effort into her look tonight- she'd even spent like two hours watching a tutorial on how to do her hair. If she messed it up Izzy would tease her about it for years.
Rising to her feet, she looked around, trying to find her next distraction. Of course, she didn't need to look far, because she saw her sister walking towards her, eating what looked to be frozen dino nuggets? She'd seen weirder, but still. Her sister had no shame.
"They had everything?" she asked, nodding towards the bag. "And you stayed out of trouble? Honestly, I'm impressed Izzy. Who are you and what have you done with my brilliantly incompetent sister?"

Elari Grimm snow leopard
Elari had honestly never let anyone read her diary before. It held a lot of personal information that she wouldn’t usually let anyone else read, it was where she poured out all of her emotions and feelings and thoughts, even the ones she wouldn’t tell her family about, which wasn’t a lot since she was pretty close to her family.
She had a great relationship with her parents, as they were both the best fathers anyone could’ve hoped for, and Elari liked to think she had a pretty good relationship with each of her siblings too.
Ephraim was the youngest, however in a lot of ways, Elari got the sense that he was far wiser than the rest of them. They shared a lot of common interests as well, especially in reading and Elari always knew that her youngest brother would have something to talk about, he was the bright side of things yet knew enough to know that sometimes, reality wasn’t as happy as fiction...and sometimes it was happier, no matter what though, Elari knew she could hold conversations with Ephraim and she’d do whatever she could to look after him, especially in his first year at TAS.
The twins: Ko and Kalahari were also fun to talk to, Kalahari had always been a huge romantic at heart, and as such, he was typically the person Elari went to when she needed someone to read her romance novels or watch her soap operas with her, she had even managed to get him to watch the well known soap opera “All Roses Have Thorns” with her and every since then, it had become their thing. Elari couldn’t even count all the conversations they had had about that show, diving into their thoughts and ships and everything else that they possibly could.
Then Ko was...well he was someone that always brought a sense of adventure to the people around him, whether he was impulse buying a cow or accidentally cursing their brother to sweat milk, or going over a joke he had heard for the tenth time to make sure everyone heard it as well so they weren’t missing out. Elari wasn’t quite as close to either of the twins as they were to each other, but she liked to think that she had a close relationship with them both, and although she might not share things in confidence with them, she knew that she always could if she really wanted to.
Enoch...he was definitely a voice of reason amongst the others, and although he had a tendency to be a little blunt and to the point, Elari knew he meant well, Enoch just...well he and Elari shared that trait of not being able to express themselves as openly and fully as they hoped, however unlike Elari - who admittedly went about it in a bit of an awkward way - Enoch typically resorted to annoyance and sarcasm. Which, if anything, it was nice to know she could ease up a little around Enoch and let out a few of her own internal frustrations around him, especially since more likely than not, he would end up joining in on it and have plenty to share on his own.
Then lastly, there was Enzo.
Though Elari was close to all her siblings and loved them all dearly, it was hard to deny the fact that she was probably closest to Enzo. He was the second oldest, only being younger than Elari by a couple months, and he...well to others, he might seem a little rough around the edges but Elari knew the truth. Despite his reputation, despite what everyone else thought about him, Elari knew her brother, they trusted each other, and whenever Elari needed someone to talk to, she would go to Enzo. He put up with a lot of her shenanigans, even willing to dress up in cosplay with her and read the books she recommended for him, and just like she knew she could go to him, he would come to her.
Elari always knew when things got bad for him again, he didn’t talk about it, but there were a couple silent things that cued her in.
However despite the close bond she had with Enzo - and all her family really - Elari hadn’t shared with them what was in her diaries, and she had definitely not let any of them read it. So having Canna read even just a small portion of it was a pretty big deal for Elari and as she watched the other girl read over the words she had written down, Elari couldn’t help but grow a little antsy.
She doubted Canna would start reading more than Elari had offered her, however she couldn’t be sure and she didn’t want to risk Canna finding something in there that Elari didn’t want shared.
Once she was sure Canna was done, Elari extended her hand out and gestured for Canna to hand the diary back to her. ”Um...yeah, I wrote about you, having you in that class really helped me gain the confidence needed to talk to everyone there, I had been really nervous before I saw you there,” she explained lightly, cheeks turning a light pink in color as she instinctively looked away and cast a glance down towards Dory.
He looked up at her with his signature “Really, Elari?” Expression on his face. He might’ve only been a rabbit, but he was the rabbit with a million faces, it always amazed Elari just how expressive he could be without saying anything at all.
She’s shot him a look of her own, a silent way of telling him to get off her back before she put her focus back on Canna. ”So um, if...if we’re okay now, well if you’re okay now, do you...do you want me to try that spell? To uh...” Elari gestured vaguely time Canna’s outfit, hoping she would get the gist.
After all, they hadn’t come up here to read Elari’s diary, they had come up here to fix that stained tux of Canna’s and Elari would like to do that before anyone began to wonder where she was and start searching for her.
Besides, Canna would probably want to get back to the party, she probably had some sort of date waiting for her in the ballroom, wondering where she was and what was taking her so long. Elari would have to apologize to this person for holding Canna up as long as she had and hope that their evening hadn’t become ruined thanks to her.
Which..actually, she should probably make sure she wasn’t currently holding Canna up.
Looking away from the other girl, Elari picked up the spell book and began flipping through it, searching for something that could help clean Canna up. ”So um...did you come here with a date? I’d hate to be holding you up if you had...”

Clover Cipher demon/unicorn/red panda/fennec fox
Clover beamed happily after the other girl in response, instantly digging through her pockets again until she found another chocolate bar and pulled it out, offering it to the other girl. ”Here you go! Chocolate ala royale-“ she was probably using those words wrong but it sounded fancy and that was the whole point of it being pompous chocolate. ”You should eat it before it back talks you though, this candy is brutal,” Clover explained with a disappointed cluck. ”Total. Snobs.”
As if to prove her point, Clover made a large gesture as if she was mopping the floors with her hands. The gesture didn’t really relate to snobby chocolate when you thought of it from the outsiders perspective, but to Clover it made total sense.
The candy was royal and snobby, so it went out of its way to belittle others, and how did you belittle the people around you and make them feel bad for not being snobby, fancy chocolate like you were? Easy, you made them wipe down the floors like Cinderella.
Maybe if she did that, she could get some cool bubble scene where she sang into her special water and found her purpose in life.
That would be pretty cool, especially since Clover wasn’t really sure what her purpose in life was. As a Cipher, being born of chaos ancestry, she assumed her place in this big ol universe was to cause a proper amount of chaos and then fade away once her time had come and all the chaos she could cause had been caused. However that didn’t quite feel right to Clover, she wanted more than that, sure she loved causing chaos as much as any Cipher over did, but was that all she was meant to be? Some sort of chaos gremlin that wrecked a decent amount of havoc upon the world and then left? That didn’t feel quite right to her.
Maybe she’d talk to Barney about it later, her cousin seemed to know a bit more about standing out in the herd of wild Ciphers than the rest of them did, maybe she would have some advice for her.
But now wasn’t really the time or place to get all existential about her life and it’s deep ties to chaos, right now Clover was supposed to be helping this other girl out since she had looked to be struggling a bit and didn’t have a Clover to help her out.
Oh, that reminded her, she should probably introduce herself, shouldn’t she?
Offering the other girl another wide, happy grin, Clover extended her left hand out to her, long half black, half purple gloves covering her hands and her arms. ”I’m Clover, by the way, spelled normally and not like Kleovur or something like that...Kleovur being k l e o v u r, obviously, but don’t worry, that’s not how my name is spelled, mine is the normal spelling, like c l o v e r, like the plant,” Clover explained, figuring that she ought to clear that up.
She had actually met someone named Kleovur before, but she was a real jerk and obviously, Clover had to fight her, and because of that fight, Clover was no longer allowed in a very specific arcade in Lujia.
Shame, she had such a high score on that candy themed racing game.
Anyways.
Smiling again, Clover kept her mismatched eyes on the girl before her, she seemed to be a little more calm now than before, which was good since that’s what Clover had been hoping for to begin with. ”I saw that you were kinda struggling over here, like an invisible demon had you pushed up against a wall and was whispering stuff to you, and it didn’t look like you had a Clover to help you out-“ unless for some reason, this girl knew Kleovur from Bixbite, but that seemed unlikely, plus Kleovur wouldn’t help someone out like she was doing. ”Then I thought, ‘hey wait, I’m a Clover that could help’, and so here I am,” she explained, hopping slightly on her feet in her excitement.
Hopefully, this girl would appreciate finally having a lucky Clover to help her out with whatever it was she had been struggling with recently.

Enoch Grimm white cat
By now, Enoch had - grudgingly - accepted that if the people were to look to any of the royal children for some form of normalcy, they could look no further than Enoch. Elari tried, she really did try, and Enoch knew she was trying, however he had also seen her slip away with a champagne glass full of chocolate fondue earlier, presumably to go hide away from the ongoing party, so while she did try and she succeeded to some extent, she couldn’t quite seem to handle the responsibilities that came with being the oldest.
Naturally, those responsibilities would fall to Enzo next, as he was the second oldest. However...however Enoch’s older brother had completely ruined what chance of a reputation he could’ve had when the “incident” happened about two years ago.
Since then, the responsibilities fell upon Enoch and he would do his best to make his family proud and prove that he was capable of something at the very least.
Now, when it came down to it, Enoch hated social gatherings with a passion, especially ones that involved dancing and proper etiquette and all these eyes on him. However, when duty called, Enoch came through to the end and that’s what he was going to do here.
Having made sure to arrive early to the ballroom, Enoch had helped set things up with the staff and greeted the guests as that arrived, and as of yet, he had not missed a single dance and he hated it.
Dancing meant he had to touch people’s gross, sweaty hands and put his own hands on their shoulders or waist and it was just...well it was far too much physical contact for him, but he had done it and he had done it with the nicest smile he could possibly muster.
By now though, his “prince” tap as he liked to call it, had run out and while he could go off of his backup generator for a little bit, even then he was playing with fire if he didn’t allow himself some form of a break soon.
So with a polite nod to his last dancing partner, Enoch began to make his way through the crowds of people, destination in mind.
He didn’t stop until he had reached a large pillar with a certain raven haired prince casually lying on top of it like a cat, perched up in its favorite spot.
”Finally had enough of playing prince, Eno?” Came the drawled out voice of his brother, which was soon followed by a very delicate hiccup.
Enoch raised his brow. ”Zo, I swear, if you have alcohol up there, I’m gonna-“
Before he could finish his threat, Enzo stuck his hand out so Enoch could see and sure enough, there was a glass of what Enoch assumed to be champagne grasped in his fingers.
Enoch opened his mouth to say something, some form of objection to the beverage his brother had when Enzo tipped it forward and the contents of the drink spilled out, falling into the potted plant beside the pillar like an alcoholic waterfall.
”Don’t worry, there’s no alcohol up here,” Enzo told him in a rather nonchalant voice as the the last drop had fallen to the ground.
Enoch closed his eyes and counted to ten.
”You can’t murder your brother, you can’t murder your brother, you can’t murder your brother-“ he repeated in his head.
Taking a deep breath, Enoch waited until he had calmed down before exhaling, looking up towards his brother with piercing yellow eyes. ”If you’re quite done with your dramatics, would you care to tell me where you got that from?” He questioned, folding his arms. ”Stole it from Uncle Elfie,” Enzo responded plainly and Enoch gritted his teeth.
That made sense of course, their uncle wasn’t exactly someone Enoch would say was a good example for any of the younger generation, and while this party was mainly for the students at TAS, the parents of the students had been invited as well.
If anyone was going to pull something like this, it would definitely be their uncle...even if apparently, he wasn’t directly involved.
”I don’t think Papa and Baba will be happy-“
”Papa and Baba don’t have to know.”
Enoch did his best to remain calm as he let out an annoyed sigh. ”Can’t you just-can’t you just come down here?” He questioned, craning his neck up to try and get a better look at his brother.
Enzo shrugged rather nonchalantly. ”Ko’s already getting a ladder, I don’t want to disappoint him by not being here by the time he gets back,” Enzo explained simply, though Enoch also got the idea that this most likely meant that Enzo couldn’t get down by himself either.
Enoch rolled his eyes slightly. ”Right, well...at least so long as you’re up there, you’re out of troubles way,” he decided after a moment.
Enzo responded by letting out a mock gasp of shock, leaning over the pillar to stare down at Enoch, a playful smirk resting on his face. ”Are you implying that I would cause trouble if I were down there with you? Why Enoch, you wound me,” he teased, placing a hand dramatically on his chest.
Enoch rolled his eyes, but he couldn’t help but smile slightly. Enzo caused him plenty of stress, and had for years by now, but he also somehow had the uncanny ability to make him relax. ”Of course not, everyone knows you’re an angel,” he responded sarcastically and Enzo let out a chuff of laughter and Enoch laughed with him for a moment or so.
That’s when he caught sight of a couple students walking past them, whispering to themselves as they looked up to where Enzo was and Enoch felt the hairs on the back of his neck stand on end.
Sighing, he shook his head, growing sober as he looked back up at Enzo. ”I think it’s best if I start to mingle again, but just...try to behave, okay?” He asked worriedly, hoping that Enzo got the point and actually tried for once.
However Enzo only leaned back again, disappearing from Enoch’s sight. ”Like you said, can’t get into much trouble when I’m up here, now can I?” He questioned, a hint of a bite to his words.
Enoch looked away from him, getting the idea that the conversation had come to an end. ”Well...alright, I’ll come check on you in a bit, so long as Ko doesn’t get back here first,” Enoch told him and started off again, casting another glance back towards Enzo to make sure he was actually okay.
At least, if anything, he couldn’t do much from up there, and hopefully so long as Enoch wasn’t there chatting to him, everyone else wouldn’t notice or mind him as much as they did when Enoch was there.
So, tired and socially drained, Enoch headed back into the thick of the party to try and be the prince people expected him to be, though he couldn’t help but keep a rather keen ear out for any other whispering that might come up about his brother or any of his family for that reason.
Someone had to keep tabs on everyone, after all.

Canna Kingsleigh irish setter shifter
With anybody else Canna might have done the jerk thing and kept reading through the diary, but this was Elari and Canna would never try to do anything to upset the other girl, and reading through her diary would surely do that. Besides, she had a lot of other things to think about than going through the book that held the princess’s deepest and darkest secrets. Everything that Elari had just said was enough for Canna to temporarily forget the diary even existed.
A million thoughts raced through Canna’s mind as she handed the diary back to Elari, but only one out of the many stood out to the Irish setter shifter.
Somehow, in some way, she, Canna Kingsleigh, had given Elari Grimm, the princess of Elanaria, confidence to speak up to a class of students deemed unruly to the school. With anybody else she would have been able to proudly say that she was a good person to look to for a confidence boost, but Elari wasn’t just anybody. She was...well, she was Elari, and Canna was sure that if anybody could inspire confidence in themselves without any outside force it would be the crown princess of the entire kingdom.
The blush from earlier stayed on Canna’s face as bright red as it had started out. ”R-really?” She asked slowly, voice stammered and wobbly. She took a moment to give a quick cough in the crook of her arm, cleaning her throat in hopes that her voice would come out a bit better. ”I mean, I can see how I’d boost somebody’s confidence, I’m just a naturally confident person, but…” Canna trailed off to look at Elari. The canine wasn’t wrong. Typically she was confident, almost to the point of being cocky, but when it came to the princess Canna struggled to find a lot of the traits she had picked up on over the years. She melted around her, this interaction was enough proof of that. Canna turned into a flustered puddle of nervousness, and she was surprised that Elari could find confidence in that. Then again, this moment was completely different from the time Elari had spoken with the troubled class. Canna had still been a mess, but not like she was now. Back in the class she had forgotten how to breathe and had grown stiff, her attention only on the princess and how pretty she was and how great it would be if she acknowledged Canna directly or even asked Canna to come up to the front of the class with her and give some sort of demonstration or something. She had certainly focused on nothing but Elari, but it wasn’t like now. Now they were alone together and Canna was actually talking to Elari. It wasn’t like how she talked with her for a brief period of time when they had both been waiting for a meeting with Headmistress Singh, that time had been different too. Though while it had been brief, it had been enough for Canna to fall completely head over heels for Elari, which was why this interaction now had the dog shifter completely useless unlike how she usually was.
Before she even knew it enough time had passed during her thoughts that Elari was able to bring up a question. Canna shot up as straight as she could go and shook her head. ”I’m fine, we’re fine, there was nothing wrong.” She waved a hand briefly as if that would indicate nothing had happened and that nothing had been wrong all the while screaming internally at herself for being so stupid and letting the whole name thing get under her skin. Elari clearly had noticed and that had been the last thing Canna had wanted, but there wasn’t much she could do about that now so instead of focus on that she decided she might as well stay on track with the present. ”Yeah,” she answered in a somewhat breathy voice. ”Yeah.” There, that sounded stronger. ”If you don’t mind still, I’d rather not be wet for the rest of the night, but if, ya know, if you changed your mind, that’s no big deal. It’s not like this is the first time I’ve had alcohol on my clothes all night.” To be fair, that happened more often than Canna would like to admit. Listen, things got wild whenever she, Apathy, and Halloween got together and had enough apples in their hidden storage out in the middle of the woods of Hym. Hym already wasn’t a good place to be stuck outside in the middle of the night, but it was even worse when it was apple time.
Just when Canna thought she was able to hold herself up a bit better around Elari the princess asked a question that had Canna internally screaming all over again.
”Did you come here with a date?”
The cool answer would be to respond with something along the lines of “Oh yeah, I totally did! You know me, smooth enough to have a date to a ball” but she couldn’t respond with that to Elari. It would be idiotic for her to say that to the person she actually wanted to take on a date. Though it wasn’t like her actual answer was cool or poetic or anything of that sorts anyway.
A new wave of fluster washing over her had her stumbling over her words all over again. ”No, y-yes, um, no,” she repeated “no” quickly with a shake of her head. ”I don’t have a date. Unless, I mean, uh, unless you...unless you wanted to be my date.” Canna stopped, immediately realizing what she had said. Her heart pounded against her chest as her blood rushed through her. What if Elari said no? What if Elari thought that was a dumb idea?
What If Elari already had a date?
This was it. This was the moment in which Canna was going to shrivel up and die. She didn’t have enough time to write up a quick will, but she hoped her family knew her well enough to know she’d just want her body buried in the middle of nowhere Hym so that the plant life there could use her decaying remains as fertilizer. It would be her way of giving back after so many years of being an absolute terror.

Elari Grimm snow leopard
As soon as Canna handed the diary back, Elari pressed the closed book against her chest, the previous tension rolling off her shoulders as soon as she knew the book was safe. It wasn’t that she didn’t trust Canna or anything like that, it was just that she didn’t want to run the risk of anyone else reading the contents of her diary.
Closing her eyes for a second, Elari bowed her head down and placed a hand along the cold surface of the book, opening her eyes as she looked down at it for a moment or so longer before giving a small, curt nod and bringing it back over to her shelves, quietly tucking it away.
There. Safe and sound right where it belongs.
Now she could actually focus on helping Canna get dry.
Walking back over to the other girl, Elari picked up the drying spell book from her bed and began to flip through it, Idly listening in as Canna spoke, wanting to pay attention while also having her focus be on the spell book.
However all that changed when Canna finished speaking.
”Unless you wanted to be my date.”
At first the words didn’t really register with her, and Elari found herself nodding along. ”Mhmm, sure-“ that’s when the words actually clicked for her and a jolt of surprise leapt up her stomach.
Elari nearly dropped the book she was holding.
...Nearly.
As the familiar warmth of a blush grew on her cheeks, Elari stared over at Canna with large, wide blue eyes, her mouth agape as she struggled to find something to say.
Canna...Canna was offering to what? Be Elari’s date? Would that mean that once they went back down there, it would be as each other’s dates rather than just a guest or host to the ball? Could people even get dates for events they were already at?
Still staring up at Canna like a deer caught in the headlights, Elari gingerly reached a hand up and pressed them against her warm cheeks, looking down at her finger tips before she cast her gaze back down to the book, her heart thumping madly in her chest.
”Um...well, I...you really want me to be your date for the ball?” She stuttered out, her brow furrowing in confusion.
Elari has been asked to balls before of course, being crown princess made her an ideal candidate to take to these sort of things, but every other time she had been asked, it definitely felt as though she was being asked as the crown princess, not as Elari herself.
However this...this was different.
Maybe it was because they were already at the ball in question, so it wasn’t like this could be used as some sort of status thing against others, or maybe it was because Canna had always been so genuinely nice to Elari in the past, but for whatever reason, Elari didn’t feel as if this was for the crown princess.
It felt like maybe, just maybe, Canna was asking for Elari herself instead.
That only seemed to make the warmth spread throughout her face and Elari quickly buried her head down into the spell book, awkwardly shuffling her feet.
”Well...if you don’t think it would be a bother, I’d...I’d love to be your date for tonight,” she decided, flipping through the pages of the book without really reading them. ”It would be...it would be fun, I’ll be honest I’m not actually much of a ball person myself, but I think...with you there, I could have fun,” she explained, finally risking the chance to look back up at Canna, offering her a pleasant, warm smile.
This was much better than the frosty atmosphere they had surrounding them on their way up to Elari’s room.
Smiling at Canna a little longer, Elari eventually realized it was rude to stare and looked back down at the book, clearing her throat. ”...Well, now that we got that settled, let’s get you dry, if we’re going back down there as dates, you can’t very well have a stain on that nice tux of yours, now can you?” She asked, sending Canna one last, playful smile before returning to the book.
This isn’t the one she had wanted to use but since Enzo still had her usual drying spell book, this one would have to do.
Surely there was something in this book that wasn’t played up as some big magical meme.
...Well actually, considering this was from uncle Egg, it was very likely that this was full of nothing but memes, however even a meme could have its use, and Elari was certain she could find something in this book to use.
Finally, she stumbled across a spell that might just work. ”Here we go, this spell here is supposed to heat something up so well that there isn’t even any evidence of the spill before!” She exclaimed, pausing to turn the book around and show Canna the spell, a bright smile on her face.
This might just work.
...Sure the book itself was called “Dumb Ways to Dry” but even in here, there had to be something of use and Elari was pretty sure she just found it.
Turning the book back around, Elari’s eyes swept over the words, soaking in every bit of information she could as she read, and once she felt like she had read over it enough to know what to do, she stepped back. ”Okay, before I start, I should warn you that I haven’t ever used this before and I’m not sure how well it will work,” Elari openly admitted, sending Canna an unsure look. There was a chance that this could backfire on them, and Elari wasn’t entirely sure what would happen if it did.
However she did think this could help them as well.
So she offered Canna a tentative, hopeful smile, tilting her head ever so slightly to the side. ”Do you trust me?”

Canna Kingsleigh irish setter shifter
Why was she so dumb? Why was she so bad at this? There was no way Elari of all people didn't already have a date. If she did it was a bit weird that she hadn't been with her date when Canna had first found Elari sitting all by her lonesome in the room. Maybe her date hadn't arrived yet, that made a bit of sense to Canna. Though she had to admit she felt a small simmer of anger rise up at that thought; why would somebody be late to a ball where they had Elari as a date? Who would be so inconsiderate that they'd hold Elari up at something like this? Unless they had troubles getting from their place to here, but even still, Canna didn't like the idea of Elari's date being late. If that was the case then she was going to figure out who Elari's date for the night was - not that it would be hard to do, finding who the crown princess had as a date would surely be a hot topic - and make sure they knew how she felt about them being late. If they were going to go on a date with Elari then they needed to be punctual and prepared.
... Those thoughts were a bit contradictory for somebody who never really cared about most things to show up on time, but in her defense there was a huge difference between being late for class and being late for a date with Elari at a royal ball.
It took a few seconds for Canna to register what Elari had answered back with. She was already so sure that the princess would decline the offer, tell Canna she already had a date waiting for her back in the ballroom, that Elari's actual response went right over her head at first. Dejection was already welling up inside her and she could feel herself deflating like a balloon ever so slightly.
That's when she realized Elari was staring straight at her with wide, owl-like eyes and a bright red blush that blanketed her visage.
Thinking that Elari had rejected her date proposal, Canna went from small panic to large panic.
Immediately the canine shifter straightened herself up, no longer in some deflated balloon stance. Her own eyes went wide as she met Elari's gaze, sure her face was as red as the princess's, sure that she looked just as panicked. "I'm sorry, that was...that was a dumb suggestion. You can-you can forget I even- ... Wait." Wait just a minute. Had Elari not declined the offer? The princess's question seemed like there might be a chance, a chance that Canna wasn't going to miss out on.
Canna held her tongue for a moment, making sure she didn't stumble too badly over her answer as she nodded, eyes still wide but she was managing to keep herself somewhat together. "I...I do. I mean, that is, if you don't have a date already... I'm sure you would, though, why wouldn't you? You're Elari, you probably have people wanting to go on dates with you all the time." Those people were probably way better for Elari than Canna ever could be. Elari needed somebody who could eventually help her run an entire kingdom. She needed somebody who was just and fair and responsible. Canna wasn't any of that. She broke the rules, she was too quick to fight, she stabbed people with staplers and screwdrivers but yet couldn't do anything with a knife. She didn't have the best experience with knives, and while she had thought having one had been cool at first, that had quickly changed.
Pushing those thoughts away to the side, Canna focused back in on Elari, almost certain that this was some kind of wild dream or hallucination that she was having. Here she was, in Elari's room covered in champagne, suggesting they be dates for the night, and Elari...Elari seemed to actually be considering the idea. This had to be some kind of dream. There was no way this was happening, no way this was real. But...but at the same time, Canna really did not want to find out that this really was some dream. She wanted this to so badly be what was actually happening in reality. "You...you really want to-to be my date?" Canna breathed, pretty sure at this point her heart had stopped and she was right on the verge of dying. Here Elari was, agreeing to be Canna's date for the rest of the ball, and even saying that she felt like she could have fun with Canna there as her date.
Oh man, this was something Canna had not expected at all for this night. She had expected running around causing various instances of havoc with the occasional longing glance toward Elari as she owned the ballroom and showed everybody there her beauty and grace. Now things had taken a complete turn, but it wasn't for the worst, this was perhaps for the best. "It's not a bother at all," she replied with a shake of her head, a goofy grin now spreading across her face. "I couldn't think of anything better than to have you as my date for the night." Canna already knew she'd be upset once the night was over, but that was a problem for later. Right now she wanted to think about what was happening in the present, and right now in the present she had somehow secured the night as Elari's date.
The Irish setter could have stood there staring at Elari for the rest of the night if not for the princess speaking up and mentioning the reason why they were in her room in the first place.
Right, yeah, they were trying to dry Canna's suit off and maybe even get rid of the stain while they were at it. That was...that was a bit more important than securing a date for the night, though getting Elari to agree to be Canna's date was still a huge deal for the canine shifter. Though Elari had a point, if Canna was going back out there as Elari's date, she had to look the part, and being covered in champagne did not look the part of being Elari's date.
Getting back on track here, Canna mostly went quiet as to let Elari concentrate on looking through her spell book. She listened to everything the princess had to say, making sure to take in each and every word without missing a single one. Even when Elari warned Canna that she had never used the spell before and wasn't sure on how well it would work out, Canna simply shrugged and then offered a small smile. "You're Elari, I'm sure it'll work."
Canna's next response came without any hesitation. With a steady gaze she looked Elari in the eyes, nothing on Canna's expression or in her body language to suggest she was wavering in her words as she firmly responded, "I trust you."

Elari Grimm snow leopard
As Canna affirmed that she trusted Elari, the young princess couldn’t help but smile at her. There was a sense of comfort knowing that despite Elari really not knowing what she was doing, at least Canna trusted her with this.
Honestly, at this point it probably would’ve been easier for them to just go grab a towel or something to dry Canna off with, but by now they were far too deep in this whole spell thing and there really wasn’t any backing out. Besides, Elari needed to practice her magic a little more. She had natural magic of course, same as the rest of her siblings and her Papa, however Elari would admit that she was a lot better at magic in concept than in actuality.
Put a book in front of her and ask her to go over the different types of magic, their uses, and how to utilize them and she could write you a hundred word essay on it - or even more, if she was being honest here - however ask her to actually perform magic and well...
Elari thought back to the other day.
-
”I’m not so sure about this, Elari,” Enoch said, and Elari gave a quick, dismissive wave of her hand, face buried in a book.
”I’m sure it’ll be fine, Enoch,” she reassured her younger brother distractedly. ”Besides, you wanted to help me with this, if you’re worried I can always go get Enz-“
”No!” Enoch blurted out and Elari looked over at her brother, raising her brow curiously. ”No-“ Enoch continued, clearing his throat and glancing away. ”I can do this, lets just get this over with quickly,” he told her and gestured for her to continue.
Elari nodded in response and looked back down at her book. ”Okay, so this spell should only levitate you a foot or so off the ground, sounds simple enough,” she told him and took a step back, clearing her throat and sticking her hand out to hover in font of her.
”Supernatet parv-ah-ahhh-achoo!” Just as she began to cast the spell, a butterfly had decided her nose was the perfect place to land on, instantly causing an itch to run up her nose.
Letting out the softest of sneezes, Elari blinked, looking over to where Enoch was, however just as she looked at her younger brother, the spell took action and instantly shot him in the air like a rocket.
He screamed and Elari’s eyes went wide, dropping the book as she ran over to where her brother had just been, staring up as his screaming figure disappeared from sight.
”Enoch!”
Well, lets just say that Elari could use a bit more practice when it came to actually doing magic and not just reading about it and learning about it.
....Oh and don’t worry, once she had gotten her parents, they had been able to get Enoch back on the ground. He had been fine for the most part...just a little winded is all.
Looking back to Canna, Elari offered her another smile, suddenly feeling a little nervous about this.
What if she somehow accidentally sent Canna blasting through her roof? Or...or, what if she incinerated her? After all this was a book called Dumb Ways to Dry, and incineration seemed like a pretty dumb way to get dry.
...
...What if she accidentally turned Canna into a volcano?
Or what if she dried up like a prune or a raisin?
What if she turned Canna into a raisin?
Oh no, Canna’s family probably would not take kindly to Elari handing them back their daughter as some sort of sad looking raisin because of a haywire meme spell cast by Elari.
If word got out that she turned people into raisins, no one would ever take her seriously as a princess again, there...there’d be some sort of royal family mutiny or something like that, they’d be dethroned all because she turned Canna into a raisin of all things.
Oh no, was it getting hot in here?
Elari froze, taking a couple steps back until the back of her legs ran into the edge of her bed and she immediately sat down, staring down at the book as she tried not to freak out. She couldn’t afford to panic like this right now, especially not in front of Canna, especially, especially not right after Canna said she trusted her and they were going to head back to the ball together as dates.
Now was a really bad time to panic.
Trying to control her breathing, Elari paused once she felt something soft and fluffy push its way onto her lap.
Blinking, she looked down to see Dory cuddled up on her lap and patiently looking up at her.
He didn’t say anything, but his presence was comfort enough, and Elari swore he was giving her an expression that said “you’ve got this” and well...that, that helped.
The checkered rabbit stayed where he was for a minute or so, checking to make sure Elari was alright.
Elari nodded down at him, a silent reassurance that she was okay now.
Dory nodded back in response and casually leapt off her lap.
Grabbing the book again, Elari stood back up and tucked a couple strands of hair behind her ear as she walked back over to Canna, clearing her throat. ”Right, up...so for this spell to work, I need to...uh”
Awkwardly, Elari placed her hand right on the spill, trying to ignore the heat rising in her cheeks and ears. ”Okay...here goes nothing,” she muttered more so to herself than to Canna.
Eyes locked on the book, Elari inhaled and quietly started to chant the words written on the pages.
It was utter gibberish, unlike most spells that had roots from some form of Latin, but at least it seemed to be working.
Glancing over at her hand, Elari watched as the palm of her hand began to glow a bright golden color, then once she had finished chanting the spell, the glow faded and Elari took a step back.
At first nothing happened and she began to worry that the spell didn’t work.
Then...
In a big burst of light, Canna’s tux set on fire.
Elari’s eyes went wide as she leapt back, letting out a quick yelp. ”Ah! Take it off!” She instructed quickly, scrambling into action as she reached out and tried to desperately pat the fire away, eyes closed and arms stretched out to try and help.

Canna Kingsleigh irish setter shifter
There was nothing that would stop Canna from trusting Elari one-hundred percent and completely. It was Elari, and there was nothing she could do that would make Canna lose that trust. Plus, this was just a spell to dry off her tux, she doubted there was much that could go wrong, if anything could even go wrong. Elari had admitted to not having done the spell before, but that didn’t bother Canna. She was sure Elari could do the spell perfectly on the first try. She’d have the stain dried and gone before anybody would even notice they were missing in the ballroom. They’d go back together, as dates, and spend the rest of the night in wonderful, happy bliss. It was going to be the best night ever for Canna. It already was the best night for her, and she knew it was only going to get better from this point on.
Canna very easily could have stayed within her thoughts for longer while she waited for Elari to cast the spell, but there was a sudden shift in the mood and the canine shifter snapped herself back to reality, stormy blue eyes looking over at Elari. Concern flooded into her gaze when she noticed Elari take a few steps back only to then sit down on the edge of her bed. This didn’t seem like part of the spell she planned on doing, and worry wormed its way into Canna’s stomach as she looked at the princess, taking a step toward her, ready to help if there was something wrong. ”Are you okay?” Her voice was soft, barely above a whisper. Canna had no idea what Elari was panicking over, but whatever it was she was ready to fight it and make sure Elari was okay. The last thing she wanted was the princess to have a panic attack or something of the sorts, and if there was anything she could do then she was going to do it. As brash and rough as she was, Canna knew how to act around somebody who was panicking. She wasn’t the best at comforting others, but she knew it was better to be soft, quiet, and gentle rather than loud, angry, and snappish about it. People couldn’t help it when they panicked. That just happened sometimes. Things had to be taken slowly or else the person’s panic could only grow worse, and making Elari worse was the last thing on Canna’s mind right now.
She was about to take another slow step toward the princess until she realized that Elari’s familiar was already on it. Canna paused in her steps, going over the idea of still trying to reach out and help Elari, but she finally decided against it. For as much as she wanted to be there and help Elari, she knew that Dory would probably be the best bet right now. Not only was he her familiar, but he was sure to know what would help Elari more than Canna would. She hated to admit it, but she didn’t know Elari on a personal level; she didn’t know what helped the princess, what made things worse, or what was just neutral for her. Dory actually knew the princess on more personal terms, he’d be better at calming her down. If anything though Canna was all the more determined to get to know Elari better after this, to figure out what she really liked, what she didn’t, what helped her when she panicked, and what didn’t.
It didn’t take long for Canna to see that Dory’s presence had helped ease Elari enough for her to get back up and speak. She looked at the crown princess with half her lip pulled back in a crooked smile. She could feel the concern that was portrayed in the gesture, but she remained silent, listening to the other girl as she spoke.
Everything was fine until Canna felt a hand placed right on her chest where she had spilled the champagne. Warmth radiated from where Elari’s hand was and spread throughout her entire body like embers from a fire she couldn’t ignore. There was no way she was able to focus on the spell’s chant with Elari’s hand right there against her. The only thing on her mind was the fact that Elari was touching her and the sensation of warmth it brought Canna. It was a bright, gentle warmth, like the heat of a fire on a chilly night in the Hym woodland. It reminded her of being back in her home district where she could be as free as she wanted and could run around and do whatever she desired without any consequences. Elari’s touch was familiar to Canna despite having never been touched by the princess like this before. It felt like home, just her touch alone felt like home to Canna.
Canna could have stood there all night with Elari’s hand on her chest, so when the feeling of her hand was no longer there, that comforting warmth that had engulfed her began to fade into a saddened coldness that longed for the princess’s touch once more. The dejection was enough of a distraction for Canna to not notice the fact that her tux was still soaked in champagne, but it wasn’t long before her mind was on something completely different.
At first she felt the searing warmth, and for a small second there she wondered if Elari had reached back out to touch her again, but that thought left her mind as quickly as it had entered when the heat continued to grow from something comforting and gentle to harsh and out of control.
That’s when it hit her.
The spell had set her tux on fire.
Canna immediately jumped back, eyes wide and her mind racing. Her first instinct was to reach up and pat at the flames, but before she could stick a hand right into the fire the heat of it had her recoiling back. Frantically she tried to think of something else she could do, wondered if there was some way they could find something like a glass of water to throw at the flames, but in her panic Canna didn’t see a single thing that could help her out.
She could feel the skin underneath her tux burning. Even if they could get it out soon Canna was sure she’d have a few marks on her chest from this, but before it could get any worse Canna was able to make out Elari’s thrown in advice.
Without a second thought Canna quickly took the tux off her body, threw it into the floor, and immediately started to kick and step at the flames in hopes of extinguishing it before it got any worse.

Elari Grimm snow leopard
Oh this was a disaster. Between Canna’s burning tux on the floor and the fact that Canna had put her trust in Elari, only for her to set the other girl on fire, Elari wasn’t quite sure what was worse...however if anything, the fire was a bit more prevalent right now.
Looking around for anything to stop it, Elari paused as she looked up to the smoke detector on her ceiling, watching as the smoke finally reached it and almost instantly, the sprinkler system turned.
As a way to prevent the entire castle from falling into a wet mess when situations like this happened, the sprinklers would only turn on for the room the fire was in...this...this wasn’t the first time someone had accidentally set fire to something in the castle.
However as water began to rain down upon them, soaking her hair and her dress, Elari couldn’t help but look down at the sad, soggy tux on the floor. Instead of drying it and getting rid of the stain, she had lit it on fire, burnt it, and caused it to become even more wet than it had been before.
Elari then looked over towards Canna, who was no longer wearing her tux and already Elari could see the places the fire had gotten to her from underneath the tux.
Finally, Elari looked down at her gloved hands, watching as water stained them, her hair falling apart from the hairdo she had spent far too long working on earlier, wet strands of snowy white hair sticking to her face as it fell out of the intricate, curly bun.
This...this was a nightmare.
Before Elari could stop herself, large wet tears surfaced in the corners of her eyes.
She sniffled.
Desperately trying to wipe at the tears forming in her eyes, Elari gave a shaky breath and sat down on her wet bed, hiding her face in her hands. ”I’m so sorry, Canna, I didn’t mean to set you on fire, or make all of this happen,” she blubbered out without looking over at the other girl.
Elari shouldn’t have been trusted with this drying spell, they should’ve just gone to go get a towel or something like that instead of trusting her to do this right. She should’ve known it would’ve turned out terrible from the start, she wasn’t very good at practicing magic to begin with and to make matters worse, she had chosen to use a spell from a meme book that she hadn’t even touched until that point.
If she couldn’t even handle something as simple as this, why would - and should - anyone trust her to eventually lead an entire kingdom?
Burying her face further into her soaked, gloved hands, Elari shook her head a little. ”I didn’t think this would happen-“ quite frankly, she hadn’t really thought at all in this case, now had she? No, the only worry she had had regarding this whole thing was that she might accidentally turn Canna into a raisin.
....She hadn’t done that though, right?
Forcing herself to peek out from her fingers, Elari glanced over at Canna.
Still human.
Phew.
Letting out some sort of mixture between a sob and a laugh, Elari gestured vaguely over yo Canna. ”At-At least I didn’t...at least I didn’t turn you into...into a raisin!” she blurted out, unsure if she found this amusing of terrible or some sort of mix of both.
Sure she had set Canna on fire, thus making sure they the other girl didn’t have any other trust in her, or would even want to look at her after all this, and sure she had caused the sprinklers to go off, thus soaking both herself and Canna to the point they probably shouldn’t even attempt to go back to the ball, and sure she looked like a wet mess at this point.
But hey, at least she hadn’t turned Canna into a raisin, right?
As another choked out laugh-sob escaped her, Elari brought her knees up to her chest, wrapping her arms around her legs as she buried her face into her knees. ”I’m so sorry, Canna, I’m really, really sorry,” she blubbered out, shaking her a head a little, closing her eyes shut as hot tears leaked from her eyes and rolled down her cheeks, uncomfortably sticking to her chin and down her neck.
Oh, whatever Canna had thought of Elari before all this would surely change now.
She hadn’t exactly made a good impression on the other girl, now had she? Canna probably wouldn’t even want anything to do with her after all this and Elari couldn’t even blame her, all she could do was hope that Canna accepted her apology.

Canna Kingsleigh irish setter shifter
The only thing on her mind right now was getting this fire under control. Canna wasn't worried about the future state of her tux would be after this, and if she was being honest, she was more worried about the floor and Elari's room in general. What if something else caught on fire before it could be stopped? What if all of Elari's room was set ablaze all because Canna couldn't get this first flame under control? She cursed under her breath as she continued to kick and stomp at the flaming tux. "Come on, go out, you stupid...you stupid fire," she hissed through clenched teeth, getting more and more frustrated with it the longer it stayed alive.
She needed something else. She needed something more than just kicking at the tux in hopes of extinguishing the fire. Canna needed water, or anything really that would smother the flames and get them to go out.
As if the universe knew what she needed and was offering her a helping hand, water began to fall from the ceiling and fall right down onto the flaming suit. Relief flooded her at the sight of the fire getting smaller and smaller until, finally, it died, leaving only a small cloud of smoke to signal that it had even been there in the first place. She didn't even mind the fact that she herself was also getting soaked from the sprinklers. What mattered was that the fire was out and nothing seemed to sustain any irreplaceable damage.
For a second a spark of triumph ignited in her chest, warming her with enough pride it was almost as if she had taken care of the fire all on her own when it had been all on the sprinklers. She was about to turn a proud look over at Elari when she heard the princess speak up. The dog had expected something like excitement or happiness from Elari, something to signify that she was glad the fire was out, but instead all that came from the princess was a sorrow that Canna had not expected whatsoever.
Canna’s excitement faded as she took in the sight of Elari. She was sitting back on her bed, face hidden behind her hands. Between hiding her face and now being wet, she looked so small, so fragile, delicate. It hurt Canna to see the girl she adored looking so beaten down and distressed. She slowly took a step closer. ”Hey…” Canna paused, losing the words she had been going to say. Should she try to help Elari, or was Dory going to come in and save the day? Canna wanted to be the one to comfort the princess, but what if she messed up? What if she did something wrong and only made it worse? It would probably be better if Dory helped her out again.
No. No, this was something Canna needed to do. If she wanted to prove to Elari that she was there whenever the princess needed her, she needed to step up and take charge in making sure the other girl was okay.
Swallowing down any reservations she had, Canna made her way toward the bed and Elari, ignoring all the water rolling down her. ”It’s fine, hey, it’s fine,” she started, making sure her voice came off as gentle as possible. Canna needed Elari to know that she wasn’t angry or mad or anything like that. She didn’t care about her tuxedo enough to get angry over its fate. Plus, there was no sense in getting worked up over it. It wasn’t like she’d ever need the suit again anyway. Canna knew she looked good in suits, but they weren’t necessarily her style. Fancy wasn’t something she’d go for if she had a choice.
Once she had reached the edge of Elari’s bed she looked down at the princess with soft, concerned eyes. She reached a hand out, hesitating for a split second, wondering if she should touch Elari right now. Would it be too much? You have to stop being so hesitant, she inwardly told herself and, agreeing with that, took a deep breath and placed her hand on Elari’s shoulder as gently as she could while leaning down to get at eye level with the other girl. ”It’s okay, it really is,” she repeated her earlier words. ”These things happen.” Okay, maybe it wasn’t exactly common to accidentally catch a tux on fire when trying to dry it, but mistakes still happened all the time and this qualified as a mistake. Canna couldn’t be mad at Elari for that. Just the fact that she had tried was enough for the canine shifter. ”I’m not mad or anything like that, I promise.” Hopefully Elari would believe her and see that really meant every word she was saying.
There was more that Canna wanted to say - though it was all just the same thing in different words pretty much - but before she could she watched as Elari dated peek out from her hands and then mentioned something about having not turned her into a raisin.
Okay so she didn’t understand why Elari would have mentioned that, maybe it was some royal family inside joke, but the princess was right - she didn’t turn Canna into a raisin.
For a second there Canna pulled her hand away from Elari’s shoulder, the faintest of laughs slipping off her tongue. Even if she didn’t understand the raisin thing didn’t mean it wasn’t amusing. ”Yeah, you didn’t turn me into a raisin. See?” As if to prove that she was still a human she held out an arm and gestured toward it with her other hand. ”Not a raisin. Though,” she paused and looked up, squinting her eyes when water sprayed onto her face, ”the sprinklers might beat you to that.” Canna doubted the sprinklers would be on for much longer and they wouldn’t be on long enough to actually make her skin wrinkle, but she was trying to lighten the mood here, make Elari feel better.
Speaking of making her feel better…
Concern for the princess welled back inside Canna’s chest when Elari apologized once more. Once again she reached out to place a comforting hand on the princess. ”Hey, like I said, there’s nothing to be sorry about.” As soon as the statement came out another joke came to mind; she probably needed to focus on actually making Elari feel better, but some people felt better with jokes, maybe Elari was one of them. Plus, this was something Canna didn’t want to miss the chance to take.
A sly smirk pulled at her lips as she took a step back from the princess. She then puffed her chest out while placing a hand against it, looking at Elari with amusement in her eyes and that sly smirk on her face. ”You know, you could say you set my heart ablaze.”
Okay, probably not the best pick up line, but Canna tried, and the opportunity to say it was right there, she couldn’t just pass that up.

blue crab/manta ray shifter
Jasper was getting pretty good at standing around aimlessly. Switching from leaning against a wall over there to walking over to that semi-empty space seemed to be normal at this place. His only form of entertainment was watching the crowds.
The moved in a chaotic motion, swirling around in large groups and clustering together like a school of fish. Back when he and Blue used to attend the school balls together, he remembered they'd spend ages just looking at the bizarre gathering of people in front of them...
- - -
"Ally Steerer looks like he's going to throw up," Blue laughed, pointing at a younger boy who did in fact look as pale as a ghost. "Think we should help him? Last thing the poor kid needs is to knock over some helpless waiter when he passes out."
"Nah, I'm sure he'll find a nice quiet corner to faint in," Jasper joked back, rolling his eyes. It was just like his brother to try and save some random kid. "Besides, his sister is around here somewhere- I'm sure she can help him out."
"You think Madeline wants to chaperone her little brother at a fancy ball like this, Jas? I thought you were supposed to be smarter than me?"
"And yet you feel fine chaperoning your own little brother?" He shot back, lifting an eyebrow. "What will happen to your reputation?"
"Mmm, but my younger brother is actually cool." Blue laughed in reply. And Jasper knew for all his teasing- Blue never really minded spending time with him. Hell if he got bored, they'd just sneak off into the gardens to smoke and ignore each other for a bit. The beauty of brothers.
"Holy shit, there she is," Blue gasped, perhaps a bit louder than he'd intended. As people turned their heads towards him- they missed the rather plain entrance of a taller girl her blonde hair tied up in a tight bun. "Evelyn Willows."
It was Jasper's turn to laugh. His brother had been obsessed with Eve since they were little kids attending school back in Lalonalu- and they'd been dating for just about a week. The ball was were they were making their first debut as a couple.
"She's coming over here, how do I look Jas?"
"About as nauseous as Ally," he replied, giving Blue's arm a supportive punch. "I'm sure she'll say something like 'you look very dashing' and you'll reply with 'thanks' instead of 'not nearly as dashing as you'."
"Ha. Funny. I'll make sure to make you mention that during your speech when Eve and I get married."
With another eye roll, Jasper took a step away from his brother. "Well you should probably go ask her to dance or something. I'll let you know if someone does something completely embarrassing while your gone. Someone besides you- that is."
- - -
It was weird not having his brother here. It was weird not having someone to tease their classmates to- not having someone to talk to. It almost made him wish some stranger would walk up and talk to him out of the blue. Almost.
Maybe I'll head out to the gardens, get some fresh air. It was a good enough plan- watching people just wasn't the same without a partner, and most people outside would be avoiding social interaction. Making up his mind, he turned to leave just as a boy shouted out to him.
Turning around, he wasn't sure he'd heard the boy right. "Your eye?" he asked, raising an eyebrow. The boy seemed so excited, surely he hadn't meant what he said. But there was a sort of menace to his smile- like he knew exactly what he'd said and if Jasper asked any extra questions he'd just reply with 'did I stutter?'
"You might want to try your luck with someone else. Eyes are messy- but not that effective unless you're trying to send a message," he said, just trying to roll with it. "You want to strike right at the problem- if you speaking to me is really that awful blinding you will have no meaning. You can still jabber on with no eyes. I'd personally go for the tongue- maybe straight to the vocal cords if you push me enough."

Birch Cipher demon/red panda/fennec fox/unicorn shifter
There were a million ways in which the other guy could have responded. Birch was hoping that he'd give the answer he was looking for, but he knew there were a lot of different reactions to his question. Some people just knew to go along with it while others would just give him a look and then slowly walk away as if nothing had been said. It was kind of fifty-fifty when it came down to it, and while Birch didn't mind either reaction, he did like it when people stuck around and remained social with him.
When asked the initial question, Birch nodded with enthusiasm. "Yeah, yeah, my eye." As if he needed to help the other guy understand where his eye was, he pointed upward to his left eye. "Maybe this one?" His voice lilted up into a question. "Honestly, I'm not sure which eye I want taken out, there's not really a constant 'this is my gone eye'." His dad didn't have either of his eyes, his Aunt Blythe didn't have her left eye, his Aunt Celeste didn't have her right eye, and there had been his other uncle, but he didn't know much about him. Birch knew his name was Bradwr and that he had died way back before even the war had happened, but that was about it. Well, he knew he didn't have an eye either, everybody on that side of the family eventually had an eye taken, but Birch had no idea if his dead uncle had his left or right eye cut out. Maybe he could ask his dad at some point. He knew his dad didn't like talking much about his twin brother, but it was an innocent enough question, right? Birch thought so. And if his dad didn't answer his question, maybe one of his aunts would.
Pushing those thoughts to the side, Birch listened to what the other guy was saying all the while a large smirk pulled at his lips. "I like how you think, but what I really need is an eye gone, not a tongue. Though," he stopped and thought for a moment, "maybe I could start a new tongue trend. I have an aunt who bit off part of her tongue, but she's also still missing an eye, so even if you took out my tongue I'd still need an eye gone." It all came back to needing an eye gone. He could tear, rip, or bite off other body parts and it would be cool, but in the end he needed an eye gone. Taking his tongue would be cool, like he said, his Aunt Celeste was missing part of her tongue. Then there was his Aunt Blythe who was also missing a pinkie finger because his Uncle Elfie bit it off after she had bit his pinkie finger off. But his aunt was still missing an eye along with the pinkie finger, so Birch needed an eye gone no matter what.
Though...he still couldn't help but think about the possibility of getting his tongue ripped out.
He turned a devilish, mischievous look at the other guy - he really needed to learn his dude's name at some point. "If you took my tongue out, could we stick it in the punch or something? We'll wait around and see who ends up drinking it. Or, or!" An idea popped into his mind and Birch gave a little bounce of excitement. "We go around licking people with it! Or throwing it at people, either way works." Imagine how much chaos he could wreak on this ball by throwing around his dismembered tongue at anybody and everybody. Nobody would be able to forget this ball, that was for sure. "Then, if you want to take out my vocal cords, we could hang them up from the ceiling like streamers! The blood dripping from my vocal cords would make for a really nice touch to the ballroom, don't you think?" Birch asked with a tip of his head. He looked like he was about to go on and say, or ask, something else when he suddenly inched closer to the other guy, golden eyes wide with curiosity. "Real quick, what's your name? Mine's Birch." There, now that he got introductions out of the way he could continue on with his plan for chaos and eventual tongue, vocal cord, and eye ripping.

Jasper let out a laugh as the boy rambled on about eyes and tongues and gore. Though he looked like he couldn't be more than a few years younger than him, the other kid seemed overly obsessed about potential bodily harm. He also had to admit he wasn't too out of his depth carrying on the conversation. While Petey and Blue might not indulge in edgier topics- Ryan and Neil where just around the age were dark = cool. He had many a conversation about scars, dismemberment, and murder.
"Jasper," he replied, only slightly shaking his head at Birch's antics. "And as lovely as it sounds, you probably shouldn't be planning a whole scheme with your separated body parts. If we where in a less formal setting- sure plan ahead, but," he paused looking around the room, "with all these stiffs around I'm pretty sure they'd drag you to the nearest hospital. They'd probably say something about not wanting you to choke on your own blood or something lame like that."
Nothing like the old 'i'm not against your idea, but everyone else might be' ruse to try to discourage the scene from escalating.
"If I were you, I'd head someplace shadier- a party behind a club or in an alleyway. Then you pick a fight over there- I'm sure you'd have no trouble finding someone to remove your eye there." Sure he was leaning on stereotypes a little heavily, but it was probably better to not have Birch approach someone with a quicker temper than him and actually get hurt.
"Am I allowed to ask why you want to loose an eye so badly?" An honest question, but Jasper didn't exactly expect and honest answer in return. For all he knew Birch just wanted a missing eye for the aesthetic.

Elari Grimm snow leopard
Honestly if Elari could shrivel up and die right then and there, she’d probably do it. This was a disaster, she had messed everything up by now. Her room was soaked, her hair was ruined, both her and Canna looked kinda messy, Canna wasn’t even wearing her tux anymore because Elari had lit it on fire.
Basically, Murphy’s Law had taken one look at Elari tonight and decided to kick her when she was already down and then repeatedly kick her a few times after that.
Burying herself even more into her hands in an effort to make herself seem even smaller than she was, Elari internally wished for some sort of escape, from all of this. Why couldn’t she just...hide away in her own little perfect world where nothing like this ever happened? Her own little Elaritopia where the only thing she had to worry about was what flavor of ice cream she wanted for dessert. Sadly, Elari didn’t live in Elaritopia, instead she lived in the real world and right now...the real world kind of sucked.
Freezing when she felt Canna place a reassuring hand on her, Elari dared look away from her fingers to give the other girl a surprised, unsure look, her face stained by wet tears that clung awkwardly to her skin, dark blue eyes glossy.
She...she wasn’t upset?
Elari has prepared herself for some kind of...of...repulsion from Canna, for the girl to look at her in anger and disgust and snap at her for ruining literally every aspect of the evening so far. However...instead, Canna’s voice was soft and comforting, she seemed more concerned than upset.
This...this was unexpected, though not unwelcome.
Out of all the possible outcomes that could’ve come from this, despite how angry - and rightfully so at that - that Canna could’ve been, instead here she was...soft, gentle, concerned, even comforting, and Elari began to wonder exactly why someone as sweet and caring as a anna was in the troubled kids class.
This was yet another - albeit slim - interactions with the other girl and this one went above and beyond to reaffirm what the past interactions had already set in stone. Canna Kingsleigh was a sweetheart, someone caring and kind, someone that didn’t get upset or angry even when faced with tribulation.
Sure she apparently stabbed someone with a stapler once, but maybe...maybe it was an Enzo situation, a time where the person in question had more than deserved it and here she was walking around with a deceitfully ruined reputation despite that simply not being the case.
That seemed likely to Elari.
Tentatively moving her hands down from her face, Elari looked Canna over in confusion. ”You aren’t...you’re not...what I mean is...umm well, you’re not...upset?” she stuttered out, eyes wide and doe like. ”But I...I set your tux on fire...I set you on fire, aren’t you upset at me for it? You-you’re burned-“ Elari paused to reach a hand out and gently placed it across Canna’s burns, her eyes flickering with concern.
She had known that Canna had gotten hurt of course, however it hadn’t really clicked yet until that moment.
She had...she had really hurt her, hadn’t she?
Gulping back another sob as it threatened to break through, Elari tried her best to push beyond her own emotions and focus on Canna. ”I-“ her words caught in her thought as her eyes glazed over the burns spread across Canna’s chest; her fingers gently running along them as her eyebrows knitted in concern for the other girl.
The burns weren’t too bad yet, though Elari had a feeling they might blister later, which would truly be unfortunate given where they were.
...Where they were...
Elari froze as she looked down at her hand and where exactly it was. She was...she was touching Canna’s chest...her...her shirtless chest.
Instantly her cheeks began to flush a delicate yet bright pink as she instantly tore her hand away and shifted so she had her back slightly turned to Canna, staring down at her hand as her face continued to burn.
Oh that wasn’t very proper of her, now was it? She hadn’t even...she hadn’t even thought about it, she has simply seen the burns and swooped in to make sure they weren’t any worse than they looked. ”I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to well...uh...you know,” Elari stammered quickly, her voice far too high pitched for her liking.
Today was just Elari disaster day, wasn’t it? At this point they might as well just go ahead and make it a national holiday or something like that.
Face still burning, Elari risked a quick glance back over at Canna, her eyes still wide, and that’s when it finally fully clicked with her that Canna was in fact shirtless right now.
That seemed to make her face warm for an entirely different reason.
Despite being seventeen, Elari had never...well she had never had shirtless people in her room before...except her siblings but that didn’t count, she lived with a bunch of boys and for some reason, sometimes they didn’t find shirts all that necessary. This...this was under entirely different circumstances.
Plus...plus unlike her brothers, Canna was...well now that Elari was thinking about it, Canna was quite attractive, now wasn’t she? With her soft, fluffy, light ginger hair that looked sort of naturally ruffled and light grayish blue eyes...she was, well she was beautiful honestly.
Blushing furiously, Elari his her face by turning her back to Canna, reaching up to tug at some of her snow white hair, twirling it around her finger.
What was she supposed to do now? She had never been in a situation like this before...although to be fair, this was a pretty unique kind of situation, but that still help her know what to do next.
However before she could do anything, Canna beat her to it.
As the other girl began to speak up, Elari turned her attention back on her, listening as Canna spoke up.
”You know, you could say you set my heart ablaze.”
For a moment, Elari was frozen in spot as her brain raced to register what had just been said.
Was she...was she flirting? Joking? Teasing her? Some sort of mix of all three?
Well, whatever it was that Canna was doing, Elari couldn’t help but laugh.
Luckily for her, her laughs had never been loud or pig like, she didn’t cackle and she didn’t howl when she laughed either. Her laugh was light and delicate, just as a princess’s laugh should be, and once it finally clicked with her what Canna had said, she couldn’t stop the laughter that spilled out of her.
”Set your heart ablaze-ha!” Elari got out in between her laughter. It was reassuring in a way to know that despite what a failure and a disaster Elari had been so far, that Canna could still find some amusement in it all.
Standing up just as the sprinklers finally turned off, Elari moved to stand next to Canna, offering the girl a pleasant smile. ”I am sorry though, for setting you on fire, believe me that was not my intention,” she promised, finding her voice now that she wasn’t wallowing in her own failure on her bed. Which...actually, speaking of that.
Elari glanced over at her soaking wet bed, her eyes trailing along her wet floors and to the burnt, soggy tux on the floor, and then finally back up at Canna. ”Too bad we can’t go back down to the ball anymore...I was really looking forward to getting a dance with you,” she admitted, casting a downtrodden glance back down at the floor.
There was no way they could go down there now, not like this.
As if sensing her thoughts, Dory hopped on out from underneath the bed, dry as could be.
”He must have hid under there once the fire started,” Elari mused to herself as she watched her rabbit familiar make his way in front of them, pausing just outside the door.
Looking over at her and Canna, Dory flicked one of his long ears. ”Give me ten to fifteen minutes, I’ll be right back,” he promised and moved to head out of the rabbit door.
Elari tilted her head. ”Wait, where are you going?” She asked as she called out to him, watching as his fluffy rabbit tail disappeared from sight.
”To get the Calvary!” Dory called back simply.
Elari scrunched you her face in the confusion; she looked back to Canna and shrugged. Usually, familiars and magic users were supposed to be in sync, however this was one of those times where even Elari wasn’t sure what that rabbit was up to.

Birch Cipher demon/red panda/fennec fox/unicorn shifter
Okay, cool, he knew the guy's name now. Jasper. He could start referring to him as that now. Birch would probably still call him “the other guy” a lot, or something along the lines of that, but now he had the option to use Jasper’s actual name.
As if to show off the new information he had, Birch let out a chuff of amusement when he heard what Jasper replied with next. ”Oh, Jasper, you act like you’ve never really been around these adults before. I’d be able to get away with so much without anything happening.” Okay, that was a lie, but Birch was confident he’d be able to get away with a lot. He was almost constantly in the class for troublemaking students, but for half of the things he did at school he should have probably been sent to something even worse than that, something that would actually have him punished in a way that would have Birch second guessing his actions.
Birch could tell he was getting a sort of roundabout way of Jasper telling him he’d rather not deal with this right now, but that wasn’t going to stop the Cipher boy. He wasn’t here for some romanticized version of a high school ball, he was here to cause some havoc and, hopefully, lose an eye. Losing other body parts would be a very nice bonus, though. ”I know a lot of the adults would be doing these exact things. Heck, they probably did something like throw a dismembered tongue around at balls back when they were students.” Birch hadn’t heard any stories about that happening, but he wouldn’t put it past some of the adults he knew, especially those in his family. Which, speaking of adults and family… ”Plus, if I did anything and got in trouble for it, I could get out of it. One of my uncles is brothers with the king, so,” he told Jasper with a nonchalant shrug. It was good to have some royal connections, and he was sure that if anything happened he could rely on good ol’ Uncle Elfie to get him out of any trouble.
Now rather than focus on other points that Jasper had brought up, Birch’s mind lingered on the whole “choke on your own blood” thing, and he couldn’t help but snicker. ”Choking on my own blood would be kinda fun. It’s like, you know, you get to take your own self out with your own life liquid. And right before it kills me I can spit it on my enemies and hope they’ll get rabies or something, because then from there they’ll go crazy and tear out their own brains and die, so really, in the long run, I’m winning here.” As he finished his little tangent he puffed his chest out, proud of his thought process on it all.
The likelihood of him losing an eye here was low, Birch realized that, but he also realized the chance wasn’t nonexistent. Jasper had a point in that it probably would be easier to find somebody to take his eye out if he were at some shady party that was in some alleyway or something like that, but Birch wasn’t currently at a shady party in an alleyway right now so he had to make do with what he had. Plus, it would be kinda cool to tell people that he had lost his eye at a royal ball for a bunch of high schoolers compared to telling them he had lost it in an alleyway - that would be too predictable. Losing a body party at a fancy establishment was surprising and thrilling. It made for a much better story.
His thoughts were halted in their tracks when he heard Jasper’s question. Birch looked at him for a moment for a moment, letting the silence that had followed the question drag out before he finally replied, ”Well, there’s this bet with my siblings and cousins, right? Whoever gets an eye out first gets to sit at the adult table during family get togethers. There’s a lot of rules though, like how you can’t take out your own eye. So far none of us have lost an eye, but I plan on being the first. I mean, there’s technically Bricrui, but she lost an eye when she was too young to understand the concept of pain. You have to feel the pain for it to count.” Birch was aware that Jasper more than likely wouldn’t understand the importance of any of this, but that wasn’t going to stop the demon hybrid from talking about all this. Besides, Jasper had asked, and so he was more than happy to answer.

Canna Kingsleigh irish setter shifter
For just a second Canna had to stop and let her mind wander. As she looked at the princess, she realized that despite everything Elari was still as beautiful as ever. For as worried and wet as she was, there was still a silent beauty to her. Canna couldn’t help but stare into the feline shifter’s deep blue gaze, taking in the sight of how wide they were at the moment, and how hard it was for her to not reach out and wipe the tears away that had formed there in her eyes. She supposed she could reach out and do that, but what if it was too much? What if Elari didn’t want to be touched like that right now? Canna was impulsive and didn’t think things through, especially when it came to Elari, but she had enough sense in her to realize that not everybody wanted to be touched. She already had a hand on Elari’s shoulder, she needed to make sure that was even okay before anything else.
These thoughts faded away when the princess spoke up, asking Canna if she wasn’t upset. The dog shifter nodded and even offered the faintest of smiles. ”I’m not upset, I mean, there’s no reason to be.” She shrugged nonchalantly. ”I’ve dealt with worse.” Canna couldn’t deny that her chest hurt from the burn and that it was definitely going to leave some sort of mark, but she could easily ignore the worst of it just by having Elari there. It was a pain she couldn’t completely ignore, and she could feel that the burn had gone somewhat deep into her skin, but it was okay. She was okay. She wasn’t lying about having had worse injuries, like the rather long scar on her leg that, even now, she had to be careful with or it would reopen in a spot and start to bleed again. It was more of a nuisance than anything now, but -
Oh, Elari had her hand against her chest again. It was a soft, gentle, comforting even. Well, as comforting as somebody touching a burn mark could; Canna couldn't deny that she winced ever so slightly at the touch. Sharp pain flashed from up her chest and radiated throughout her body, but it was soon replaced with a softer warmth, like being wrapped up inside a blanket. Slowly she pulled her eyes away from Elari and glanced down at her chest where the princess’s hand lay. She watched Elari’s fingers run along the bright red mark the flames had left on her skin, breath catching in her throat at the sight. No matter where the princess would have touched her Canna’s reaction would have been the same, but she had to admit she felt a lot warmer, a lot more like she was going to melt, knowing that she was standing right in front of Elari now without a shirt on, and not only that, but the princess was sliding her fingers gently along part of her exposed skin. She had no problem with standing in front of the princess shirtless, that wasn’t something that bothered Canna, but it was the fact that the realization of the whole situation was hitting her that had her flushing. She was in Elari’s room, shirtless, Elari with a hand against her chest tracing over the burn… Oh man, if anybody walked in on this...if one of Elari’s dads walked in on this after realizing their daughter was missing from the ballroom… Canna had a reputation already, but how much would it escalate if the king of Elanaria walked in on her shirtless, his daughter touching her chest?
Well, there’d be no denying her title as Queen of Bad then, now would there? It would be Elari’s reputation that Canna would worry about if people found out about this.
Luckily nothing like that happened in the time between Elari placing a hand on Canna’s chest and when she took it off. The only thing that really happened was a pit of disappointment that opened up inside her, and as soon as Elari’s hand was no longer there she could feel the hot pain of the burn underneath her skin all over again. ”It’s fine,” Canna murmured; she had been saying that a lot lately hadn’t she? It was worth it, though, she wanted nothing more than to reassure the other girl.
Which, apparently her mind went straight to dumb puns to try and help Elari feel better about this entire thing. If anything the pun wasn’t that far off - Elari really did set Canna’s heart ablaze.
The Irish setter stood there for a moment, growing a tad bit fidgety as she waited for Elari’s reaction to the whole joke. Would it help? Would it only make things worse? Canna had no idea, but she was certainly feeling nervous as she awaited the princess’s response.
And then it came.
If Canna was being honest, she had not been prepared for the reaction.
She was laughing. Elari was laughing and Canna couldn’t think of a more beautiful noise than that of Elari laughing.
The princess’s laugh was soft, dainty. It was like dandelion tufts getting caught in the wind and floating lazily along in the breeze on a warm summer afternoon. Her laughter was as soft as the trees swaying back and forth back in Hym, the rustling leaves a comfort to Canna. Elari’s laughter was serene, tranquil, and brought memories of home rushing to Canna. But most importantly, she felt the tension in her shoulders go slack once she realized that she had made Elari laugh rather than make her feel worse.
Canna’s gaze lingered on the princess even as she got up off her bed and onto her feet to stand beside the canine. ”It’s fine, really. I know you didn’t mean to.” Canna would easily take getting burned by Elari over a lot of things. It hadn’t been the worst thing to happen to her after all.
Oh right. That...that was a problem, wasn’t it?
Canna looked over to her tux that was now soaked and burned. For as much as she didn’t care about going to the ball in formal wear, going back down to the ballroom in her ruined suit probably wasn’t the best move to make. Plus Elari was soaked too, and while Canna still thought the princess to be beautiful, she could understand the snow leopard’s hesitance on going back down. ”Yeah, I...I really wanted to dance with you too.” Her voice was soft as she spoke the words, stormy blue eyes looking down in a sheepish manner. She had really been looking forward to that dance. Not like she could dance at all, but still, dancing with Elari, having her as her date tonight...that would have been one of the best moments of Canna’s life, if not the best moment.
The reappearance of Dory snapped Canna out of her thoughts. She looked at the rabbit, watching as he hopped over with fur as dry as could be. Her gaze flickered between familiar and owner, curious as to what was happening. This curiosity only grew when Dory hopped off. "What is he- You don’t know either, do you?” She cut off her first question to replace it with another, realizing that Elari looked just as confused as Canna felt. Well...if anything, this would be a surprise for the both of them to figure out once Dory returned, assuming he would at least.
