Canna Kingsleigh irish setter shifter
If one more misfortune happened to fall upon them in-between now and the time they made it back to the ballroom, Canna was going to personally summon the god or goddess of bad luck and throw hands. She’d even shift into her canine form and throw paws for good measure. She wasn’t about to let one more thing mess this night up for her. She was so close to getting to have an actual date with the girl of her dreams and she was beyond determined to not have anything else happen.
All the way from Elari’s bedroom to the ballroom Canna was hyper aware of every little thing. Her body was an odd combination of both stiff and loose. Her instincts based on the events of tonight had her ready to sprint into action at any moment, waiting for something to happen, expecting an outrageous circumstance to make itself known. What if all of a sudden something as ridiculous as a stag from the wilds crashed the ball, and before anybody could wrangle the frantic animal he would run straight down the hall both Elari and Canna were walking down, head lowered and antlers pointed straight at the princess in its terrified dash. It would be Canna’s job to either push Elari out of the way, deter the stag on its first path, or jump in front of the kingdom’s princess and sacrifice herself to the stag’s antlers.
On the flip side Canna’s body was stiff, like some old, worn down tree that had fallen decades ago but was still clinging to life. She was tired and weary of everything that had happened thus far and wanted nothing more to lay down somewhere warm and never have to worry about a single thing again. She would love to have Elari cuddle up beside her, and together the two girls could lay there in content silence until their eyes closed and slumber overcame them. They would be old logs together, wishing to still be alive all the while coming to terms with the fact that all they could do was rest and watch the world continue on around them.
Honestly, that mental picture left a warm feeling in her chest. It would be nice to just lay down somewhere and cuddle with Elari while everybody else went about their own lives. Maybe...maybe one day that really could happen. Maybe tonight was the start of working up to all that, and looking over at Elari, arm in arm, Canna couldn’t help but give the princess a soft, adoring look full of affection.
In what both felt like a few seconds and many minutes, they had made it to the ballroom without anything terrible happening. Canna couldn’t stop a sigh of relief from escaping her as she realized they had made it unscathed. She looked away from Elari to scan the large room, noticing that nothing had changed since she had last occupied it. Elari’s comment told her that the princess had the same thought running through her mind, and Canna wasn’t sure if she was glad nobody seemed to notice their absence or upset that nobody had noticed that Elari, the star of the ball, had slipped away from the ball.
Their descent down the stairs, despite being slow, wasn’t enough time for Canna to decide if she felt relieved or upset over her thoughts, and by the time Elari spoke up to inquire of Canna what she wanted to do, the dog shifter still had no idea and would never know now as her mind threw such thoughts away.
Making up her mind on what she wanted to do usually wasn’t hard for Canna, but right now it seemed like her brain couldn’t pick what it wanted in the slightest. Rather than come up with a decision she looked at Elari, wide-eyed, once again realizing that she had actually secured the night with her. ”We could...um,” she paused, honestly uncertain on what they could do. Canna would be thrilled with anything she did considering it would be with Elari. Should she ask the princess if there was anything specific she herself wanted to do? That seemed like a good course of action, but she was stopped when Elari brought up one of her cousins, mentioning how it may not be a good idea for them to meet just yet. This got an amused snort out of Canna. She raised an eyebrow and looked at the princess with amusement. ”I’m sure I could handle your cousin.” Canna had some pretty questionable cousins herself, she was confident she could handle Elari’s own.
All thoughts about cousins were shoved to the very back of Canna’s mind when Elari brought up the possibility of dancing.
Considering this was a ball and dancing was to be expected, Canna still couldn’t stop herself from feeling a rush of surprise go through her. Once again she looked at the princess with wide eyes, the heat from her face telling her she was bright red. ”Dancing sounds, uh, it sounds great. I’d love to dance with you, since, ya know, I’m your date and that’s...that’s what happens at these things.” Canna managed to stop herself from rambling on, yet her face remained hot and red, her blue eyes still wide as she looked at Elari, waiting for the other girl’s response.

Elari Grimm crown princess of elanaria snow leopard shifter (year 5)
Elari offered Canna a gentle smile, holding out her hand for the other girl to take. ”Do you dance much?” She asked, putting a hand on Canna’s shoulder. Dancing was something that Elari could confidently say she knew how to do, she had taken lessons with her papa since she was very little, and beyond that she had also learned all about ballet, which was different and didn’t really come into play here, but it had helped her become very light and balanced on her feet.
”My Papa taught me and my siblings how to dance, I remember when we were little, he would bring us in here when it was empty and we’d all take turns dancing with him,” she told Canna, lightly guiding her further onto the dance floor. Of course, Elari had no doubt in her mind that Papa would still do that today if she asked, he liked to keep up on their lessons, especially the fun stuff like dancing together in an empty ballroom. He was always very patient with them when they danced, even when they had stepped on his toes - which was often for some of them - and it had made the lessons rather fun. ”I was always very light on my feet, I didn’t usually step on Papa’s toes, neither did Ko, but all my other brothers would always accidentally step on his toes,” Elari continued with a light giggle at the thought.
You would think that out of all of them, Ko would have stepped on Papa’s toes more, especially since Kalahari did it so often than Papa once had him just place his feet on top of Papa’s and dance with him like that, however Ko had proven to be fairly graceful on his feet...or maybe it was just because of how intently he always watched his feet while dancing.
Of course as time went on, they all got better at it, Enzo and Enoch never stepped on toes anymore, Ephraim was still learning but he was only thirteen so he had time, and Kalahari...well, Kalahari was still Kalahari.
But that was enough about her, she should really take this as an opportunity to get to know her dance partner a little better.
Spinning a little, Elari looked up at Canna, the other girl wasn’t much taller than her, maybe only an inch or so. ”Have you been to the palace before? I don’t think I’ve seen you at any of the other balls or banquets,” she commented lightly, which to be fair to Canna, the more frequent balls and banquets were usually reserved for the residents of Mfalwen, or the dukes, duchesses, lords, ladies, and all their children, and Elari was pretty sure she would know Canna already if she fit into that category.
Sure, they attended school together, Elari already knew that, considering this was an event for the students of TAS and their parents, plus she had met Canna at school before, however it was a rather large school, one that catered to people ages thirteen through twenty two, it was hard to say she personally knew everyone and their parents, even though she did try, she wanted to know everyone the way Papa seemed to, especially if she was to be queen one day.

Mallory Ethels goliath birdeater & koi fish It was nice to have the confirmation that the grooves were indeed for anybody, even if the beat was different for each of them. There was some point in the comparison that despite being from wildly different eras, there was still some semblance of understanding and acknowledging one another and being absolutely fine with the fact their beats were different from one another. No need to point something out or judge when everyone was just doing as they do.
Just a bunch of people dancing in wildly different clothing to a different beat.
Or... if the way the conversation was going, a bunch of people dancing in no clothing to a different beat.
Really though, Eggy was bringing up a bunch of points Mallory had never considered. What was the morally wrong reason for going naked in public when you could do the exact same thing in a more socially acceptable way. What was the difference between a human body and any other animal body. They both existed as forms to hold their mind and thoughts while the only difference was physical. But they still held the same opinions and views in one form another.
And wasn't that what made the separation between normal animals and themselves? The ability to think and hold opinions on such a different level? Why would they hold themselves at different standards in the two forms? Was there an unconscious and still present association with their animal forms being along the lines of normal animals ingrained in their current society? That somehow plain humans were still better than animals in some kind of way and had to prove it by clothing themselves?
"There really is no justice in it all," Mallory firmly agreed. It was- Eggy was so convincing in this conversation. She brought up points that got Mallory thinking. And while Mallory had doubt this would lead her to forgo clothes and live life unconstricted (her mom would absolutely have some choice words to say about that), it was deeply interesting to consider.
"How is the comparison between an animal to a human and an animal to an animal meant to really be different. All we've done is give human the fancy title of not being an animal."
Ah, but the furry aspect. "Some people just got luckier than others when it came to being a furry in their animal form I guess?" Mallory offered. Who knew it the lucky ones were the furries or vice versa. All Mallory could really say there was she didn't think she was considered a furry in her shifted form... given she had 8 legs and walked on none of them...
Mallory let out a small laugh at the compliment, adding on a "Thank you," afterwards. "You've really opened up my eyes by bringing up the conversation anyhow."

Eglantine Grimm white peahen shifter (year 1)
Aha, victory, Eggy was getting through to her, she could see it in her eyes, Mallory was beginning to question everything she knew, this was good, Eggy wax considering this a win, it’s not that she wanted Mallory to question everything, but hey, this was an important thing to question, there was absolutely no reason why they should be forced to wear clothes, and yet here they were, wearing clothes, suckling on the system’s restrictive nipples like a bunch of newborn idiotlings.
Eggy grinned, nodding along. ”Exactly! See! Clothes are a stupid concept that no longer holds any value or meaning, I mean, I’m okay wearing clothes, I don’t get all claustrophobic and feel like I’m suffocating in them, like my Dad™ does, but my body likes to be free too, and it shouldn’t be shamed for that,” Eggy continued, giving a brisk nod of her head to prove her point.
Between the influence of her two fathers, Eggy had learned to be passionate about things, to do her research, and to stand up for what she believed to be a social injustice put upon human and animal kind alike, honestly, Eggy was convinced that if she really really wanted to, she could totally be a lawyer by now, sure she was only thirteen but she could do it, she knew her stuff, she knew what she was about, and she would fit right in with all the other lawyers, like Pére was, he was a lawyer and though she had never gone to work with him, she liked to assume that he was pretty good at his job, he was one of her fathers after all, which instantly meant that he was the best.
But anyways, enough naked and lawyer talk, there was something even more important to discuss now, and that was the whole definition of a furry.
Now technically, Eggy was pretty sure anyone with an animal form qualified as a furry based off of intellect and stuff like that, but if you were going with the more simple, well known term, then the only real furries would be the ones that could stop the shifting process halfway through and be like all those weird furry art she had seen. Which...actually, Eggy was pretty sure she knew some people that could theoretically do that, so they were real furries, maybe she could learn from them how to do that herself, then she could also be considered a real furry and that would be cool.
Which, she should make a mental note to draw her fursona later, good ol Eglay didn’t get enough attention anymore.
”Ever drawn a fursona, Mal?” Eggy asked, looking back to the other girl as she leaned against the table. ”Personally, I think it’s fun, I’ve got a fursona, I named her Eglay, because you know, lay eggs, it seemed clever at the time and you know what? Seven year old me totally knew what she was doing, Eglay is a cool name,” she explained and looked Mallory over with a tilt of her head. ”Your fursona would look super cool,” she decided pointedly.

Canna Kingsleigh irish setter shifter
Dancing had never been on Canna’s list of things she found interesting or even something she wanted to be good at. She had never expected dancing to be something she needed to do, so she didn’t think much of it and just went on about her life. She was, at least, quick on her feet and was a quick learner - at least that’s what she liked to believe of herself. It was bound to be the hunting dog in her that made it so easy for her to pick up on things, not that she just wasn’t naturally smart or anything like that, but she did feel like she needed to give the canine part of her some credit. Perhaps that would make dancing come easy to her. Yeah, it should. Dancing couldn’t be that hard, right? All she had to do was watch her feet and move in a certain pattern alongside Elari. She could do that no problem. Dancing should be easy.
‘Should’ was the key word there.
By now she should be used to the little touches from Elari, or just the attention in general, but as soon as the princess reached out and placed a hand on Canna’s shoulder everything about this moment became all too real and she wasn’t sure if she could even breathe right let alone coordinate her movements in time for an entire dance. She was doing her best to follow what Elari was saying and what she was doing, but all Canna could think about and focus on was the fact that she was with Elari. She was on a date with Elari, and now she was supposed to be dancing with her out in public. What if she made a fool of herself? What if she messed up so badly that it reflected negatively on Elari? Honestly she was probably already tarnishing the princess’s image just by being around her. Canna didn’t exactly have a good reputation. People who knew who she was knew of her as the girl that was always in trouble, the girl that had managed to fight her way to the top of the ‘troubled students’ group and made herself some sort of leader. She wasn’t prim or proper or anything a princess should be getting friendly with, and Canna could only imagine the way her hanging around Elari could be twisted into something evil.
Well, you know what? She’d like to see anybody try and spin Elari into something negative. Anybody bold enough to do that would have one angry dog to deal with, and Canna wasn’t above breaking somebody’s bones and throwing them into the woods to fend for themselves.
With that spark of her usual self coming back to her, Canna was able to push aside the momentary panic she had from earlier and fall into a steady pace with Elari. She did have to admit that she missed what Elari had said earlier, but she assumed it had to be something about dancing. It made sense for the topic to be about that, but Canna didn’t want to make a fool of herself, and rather than try and pretend she had heard, she simply concentrated on keeping up with Elari, only letting her focus go just a little bit when the feline shifter spoke up once more to ask a question.
Okay, that was an easy enough question to answer. She could do this. Words were easy.
It did take Canna a moment, but eventually she found her voice. ”I haven’t, actually. This is the first time I’ve been,” she replied simply. Canna’s family wasn’t exactly important enough to catch the attention of the royal family, so it was no surprise she had never been to the palace before. To her her family was special, but she was well aware that there was nothing exactly cool about them, or at least cool enough to be noticed by the kings. Sure, she had an aunt and uncle who were duke and duchess over an entire district, but Canna even doubted her aunt Hershey would make an appearance at any social palace event. That just wasn’t her thing. It would be hard to get her to show up for a mandatory fancy gathering, so even then it wasn’t like anybody in Canna’s family was extremely well known. And while Canna was okay with that, there was also a part of her that wanted to have a little bit more recognition. She was just some random kid out there that didn’t exactly stand out when it came down to it, and something about that just didn’t settle right with her. She felt like she could be more than what she was, more than just some girl that probably didn’t matter in the grand scheme of things.
Maybe that was another reason why Canna was so drawn to Elari. Elari was basically the heart of the country, she was everything and more to everybody out there. She was something Canna had never been, and maybe this was the start of her finally changing that.

Elari Grimm crown princess of elanaria snow leopard shifter (year 5)
Falling into place alongside Canna was easy, Elari had danced plenty of times in her life and had she not escaped to a quiet room before now, she was certain that she would’ve danced quite a few times tonight. It wasn’t something she minded, she enjoyed the rhythm that came with dancing, it was a pattern to memorize and that was something she was good at, what Elari wasn’t quite so good at was talking while dancing, she could do it of course, however usually she struggled to find something to talk about with her dance partner, usually she ended up stumbling over her words and dumbly asking them what they thought of the weather.
That hadn’t happened this time though, instead conversation came naturally to her as she led Canna along to the dance. Perhaps it was because she had already been talking to Canna beforehand, and this was merely an extension of the conversation they had been having all night long, or perhaps it was that Canna made her feel at ease, she had already proven herself to be patient, especially when Elari had messed up, and that made it all the more easy to simply fall into place alongside her, the melody of the song ringing pleasantly in her ears as she swayed to the music.
”What do you think of the palace so far?” Elari asked curiously, tilting her head to the side as she looked up at Canna. She had grown up here, wandering through the large, spacious halls and picking flowers in their wild garden outside, to her this was home and it brought a sense of comfort and peace with it, however Elari quite liked to learn what others thought of the palace, people that hadn’t grown up here and knew it like they knew the back of their hand....which actually, Elari wasn’t sure she knew the back of her hand all that well, she probably knew the palace better than she knew her own hands, but that was really beside the point here.
”Of course, you would’ve only seen the places open to the public,” Elari added absentmindedly as she went over what places that would be.
The main ballroom of course, the front room as well, not to mention the hallways and the palace library, plus a few of the bathrooms and the second ballroom, they’d have access to a few balconies and the gardens as well.
How much of that had Canna seen already? How much of it did she want to see? Perhaps whatever she hadn’t seen already, Elari could show her after the dance. ”What about the gardens? Have you explored any of our gardens?” Elari asked, her mind wandering to the jungle of flowers outside.
Her papa had made it clear from the start that he refused to live in a stuffy city, Mfalwen itself was home to many wild plains and the great Wisteria Woods that enclosed the district in, along with the river of course, however even beyond that, her papa had positioned the palace at the highest point of the district and the gardens were as wild and untamable as her baba’s hair, with flowers and trees of every kind and secret portals that led to different spots in the garden, there were even a good amount of tunnels and caves underneath the gardens, full of crystals and everything else one could imagine, Elari had spent a good amount of her youth, playing with Enzo and her other siblings down in the tunnels, under the watchful eye of her parents or even the royal guard.
The orcs in the guard seemed scary to people that didn’t know them, however Elari had grown up with them and she loved them all, they were her friends and she made sure that they knew that as well.
Hmm, maybe Canna would like to visit the guards later, she seemed like the type that would appreciate the orcs.

Canna Kingsleigh irish setter shifter
Talking to Elari was easy. She could do this. Canna had been able to hold up conversation decently well since she had first run into Elari earlier that night. There had been a few mess ups and a few stutters here and there, but she felt like she was doing as okay as she could in the presence of a literal princess, and not only that, but the literal princess that she was undeniably in love with. And yes, Canna would go so far as to say she was in love with Elari despite the fact that she didn’t know Elari on a personal level yet or anything like that. She was just that confident that all her assumptions and thoughts that were based on what she knew about Elari was true and that there would be no fault in her being in love with the princess already. There wasn’t a future in which Canna didn’t see herself loving the princess, so surely that meant her affections were less infatuation and more actual romance.
With conversation, through, came needing to actually respond. Canna fell silent for a moment, thinking about what Elari had just asked her. What did she think about the palace? Well...it wasn’t like her home, not by a long shot, but it wasn’t...it wasn’t bad. It was large, and Canna was sure she would get lost in it if she tried to explore it without a palace native at her side, and she didn’t quite understand the appeal of wanting to make a home out of a place were way over half of the rooms probably didn’t have much of a use, or at least not much of a “home” use. A palace seemed more like a place of work than a place of living, but she couldn’t say much. Maybe having a palace for a home wasn’t as bad as she thought it to be. She was sure Elari would find her way of living to be too cramped or something, not that she had a small house, but it was certainly dwarfed in comparison to the palace.
Though, she supposed she needed to actually say her thoughts out loud rather than go on some internal monologue about it all. That would be beneficial to all this.
”It’s very fancy,” Canna started, taking a moment to look around the ballroom where dozens upon dozens of other people were dancing and enjoying themselves. ”And big, but...it’s really nice. I like it. I like it because, uh, um, well,” she stopped, stumbling on both her words and her feet for a second there as her brain, for once, caught up to her tongue before she said something that would probably come off as way too forward for just a first date. While a part of her didn’t want to come out and say it, she also realized she had said a bunch of other things tonight that would have been perceived as coming off as too strong, so she might as well just let her thoughts flow freely, and at least this time she did have some semblance of control over them. ”I like it because, well, you’re in the palace.” Even if the palace was rundown and absolutely disgusting to look at, it would always be beautiful to Canna if only because it was the place Elari called home.
If her face wasn’t already flushed and there wasn’t already butterflies in her stomach then Canna would for sure be experiencing all that now, though when Elari mentioned the gardens, that worry and flustered feeling faded away into more of an afterthought.
”Gardens?” Her eyes went wide with a clear intrigue in them. For as much as a “bad girl” Canna was, she had inherited her mum’s love for plants and gardening, and she had always helped with the plants back home. It had always been one of the “softer” activities she enjoyed, and it had always been a way for her and her mum to bond and share time together. ”What are the gardens like? I bet they’re amazing,” she murmured, trying to imagine just how ornate and amazing the gardens at the royal palace would be. Maybe, if she was lucky, Elari would go show her the gardens at some point during the night if that was even possible. If it was then Canna wouldn’t pass up the chance, especially since it would be something to do with Elari.

Elari Grimm crown princess of elanaria snow leopard shifter (year 5)
Elanaria
The Palace - With Canna
Elari felt herself warm at the ears as Canna explained why she liked the palace. For Elari, this was just her home, she slept here, ate here, bathed here, she even had her first steps here, but none of that...none of that made it special, it wasn’t special because of her, if was special in-spite of her, the palace was unique and special because that was how it was and had always been, it didn’t have anything to do with her...
Still, Elari’s heart fluttered by the compliment and she quickly looked away as her face began to rosy in the cheeks. ”I-I’m glad you like it,” she ushered out quietly, tucking a hair behind her ear as she tries to ignore the warmth in her face and the flutter of her heart.
Nobody complimented Elari like Canna did and although Elari didn’t seek out compliments from others - especially as she had come to find that most compliments were fake - she couldn’t help but soak up Canna’s.
Maybe it was because nothing Canna said seemed fake to her, that despite her sweet words, none of it was laced with deceit. Elari had been lied to before, she had been led to think that people liked her and enjoyed her company, that they were her genuine friends and cared about her for her, not her status as princess and heir to the throne.
Since then...since then it was hard to believe what others said about her...unless it was bad, she could trust the bad, people that spoke poorly of her were people she knew she could trust to be honest and honestly? That was worth more than every fake compliment a silver tongue could buy.
Elari had learned to trust the sneers rather than the smiles and yet...despite all of that, when Elari looked up and met Canna’s eyes, when she saw how red and flustered the other girl got just by being around her, when she heard Canna speak so warmly and sweetly of her, Elari couldn’t help but believe every word.
Perhaps it was poor judgment to fall for her sweet words, Elari knew better than that...yet even still, Elari found herself being pulled in and something urged her to believe Canna, going against all reason that Elari had been led to believe about people.
Perhaps...perhaps Canna was different.
Realizing she had begun to stare at the other girl, lost in her thoughts, Elari looked away, focusing on the gardens instead. Canna seemed interested in them, perhaps that was something to explore a little more.
”I could take you to them, if you’d like!” Elari blurted out quickly, staring widely up at Canna.
She paused for a moment, calming down as she pulled away, ending the dance. ”I mean...I could...If you...If you want,” Elari corrected herself, stammering over her words as she shuffled her feet. Was that awkward? It felt awkward to her, hopefully Canna didn’t mind.

Mallory Ethels goliath birdeater & koi fish Mallory nodded as Eggy spoke. The way she spoke was heavily convincing. There shouldn't be judgement or viewing somebody as being strange if they wanted to go out in public in the nude. They should be treated as any other clothed person.
Although... while Mallory felt like she had become more open, accepting as a person, of those who wanted to go without clothes, Mallory still doubted she could personally go without them. Not now at least. And some part of her was aware that the only way to make change was to actively participate in it, but Mallory was still a bit to nervous to join the leading forces for nude-kind.
She liked clothes, but she understood that the future Eggy was advocating for (or at least, Mallory assumed this would be the future Eggy was advocating for) was one where people could have the choice to not wear clothes in public without scorn. They'd have a choice to go one way or another and it'd be treated as absolutely normal.
Onto furries though. Mallory couldn't say she had ever drawn a fursona, so she shook her head to indicate as such. "Could you show me some of the drawings of her when we have our next club meeting?" Mallory asked. She hadn't seen many bird-like furries... feather-ies?
As for a fursona of Mallory's own... "Would it have to be the same kind of creature as I am?" Sure, Mallory understood that furries were generally supposed to represent a person's own self as an animal and that everyone already knew what animal they'd be when they reached 13 years old, but Mallory... wasn't a fan of her alternate form.
She was chunky and furry and fuzzy all over. Her legs were spindly and long with little fins at the end of them, but they couldn't support her on land at all. She was relegated to being in the water when in her animal form. And it wasn't even good swimming. She just floated around and had to vaguely try to move her legs around to go different directions, but really she sat in the bottom of the river when swimming and couldn't get out unless she washed ashore or shifted back into a human form.
It sucked. She'd rather be like. A cat or something. Simple, boring, but can move around just fine.

Canna Kingsleigh irish setter shifter
There were so many things that Canna had running through her mind. There was obviously the thoughts about how perfect and stunning Elari was, there were also the thoughts about how nothing could ever top this moment to date, but now there was another thought that lingered in the very front of her mind, and if she was assuming correctly, this night was about to keep outdoing itself.
Was Elari really suggesting that she could take Canna to the gardens now? That’s what it sounded like, and Canna couldn’t push down the excitement that was bubbling up inside of her. ”I want to,” she breathed quickly, the excitement apparent in her words and in her body language, her grip on Elari tightening ever slightly and her eyes going wide as she looked at the princess. Plantlife had a special place in Canna’s heart, and she wouldn’t admit that to just anybody. Her family was obviously aware of her love for plants, but beyond that gardening and the likes was not something she made public. It would sound weird if somebody like her, the sovereign of rule breakers, was known to have a soft spot for flora. It would make her sound soft, and being soft in her position would leave her open for attack, and she was not about to be overthrown. She had worked way too hard to rise to the top for that to happen.
That was something she hid from everybody else though. When it came to Elari...well, Canna was an open book. She had no qualms in telling the other girl anything at all; if Elari wanted to know Canna’s deepest darkest secret or anything else she was more than welcome to it - the dog shifter was completely and utterly open to the princess. Maybe that wasn’t a good thing, but she couldn’t help it, and she didn’t want to help it.
”Can...can we even go to the gardens right now? I mean…” She trailed off as she peeled her gaze away from Elari to look around the ballroom. Any other time and Canna would have had no problem with slipping away from an event, and she had already slipped away from the ball with Elari, but that was to change out of her alcohol soaked clothes from earlier. This time was different, but if Elari was sure it was okay to do then Canna was not going to pass up this chance to see the royal gardens at all. She was sure they were absolutely gorgeous and very well taken care of, and she could only imagine how the plants’ beauty would reflect on Elari. Two of Canna’s favorite things together would be amazing.
The canine shifter stood there in silence for a moment, letting the ambiance of the room and the gentle sounds of music wash over her. After a moment longer she brought her gaze directly to Elari’s, that spark of confident rebellion shining in her stormy blue eyes. ”Let’s go to the gardens.”

Eglantine Grimm white peahen shifter (year 1)
- - Elanaria
The Palace, Mfalwen
Huh, Mallory wanted to see good ol Eglay in person did she? Well, Eggy supposed she could bring some sketches by later on and show off the peacock goddess herself, after all, for a peacock furry, - feathery? - Eglay was totally smoking hot and deserved to be admired by everyone around her.
...Well actually, she didn’t look super hot or anything, but Eggy had put a great deal of thought into designing dear Eglay over the years, she was special, and in a lot of ways, Eglay was her first ever Oc, so she would always have that special place in Eggy’s heart no matter how many design changes she went through as Eggy got older and had a better sense of what worked and what didn’t.
”I’ll make sure to bring some sketches of her back to school with me so I can show you them, she’s pretty cool, I think you’ll like her,” Eggy decided with a casual shrug, grabbing one of the small abominations of food on her place and shoving it in her mouth.
Ugh, it still tasted pretty good.
Curse you, food.
Then Mallory asked a question that actually made Eggy stop and think for a moment. This wasn’t something she had actually thought about before, maybe it was because she was a peacock and peacocks were naturally really cool so who wouldn’t want to be a peacock furry anyways? But the point was, this was something Eggy actually hadn’t thought about and that was absolutely appalling to her, especially as this was an extremely important thing to cover.
”Well, furries are supposed to embody who you are as a person, but not so much your physical appearance, more so your soul, and I mean, sometimes that is the animal you were born to be, and sometimes it’s...not, I guess?” Eggy started, trying to figure this out. ”Like, imagine if your mom was a wolf and your dad was a squid and so you were pretty much doomed to be some wolf-squid - a squidwolf, if you will, and yes that’s a play on Squidward - but you felt like you were more of uh...I dunno, Arctic fox or something cliche like that, would your fursona have to be a squidwolf?” Eggy was mostly speaking to herself by now, as she did best when she got to verbally work out questions.
Falling quiet, Eggy thought about it a little longer before finally, she had reached a verdict. ”Alright, I’m gonna go with no, your fursona does not have to be the same animal that you are when you shift, because fursonas are a way for you to show who you are beneath your physical form, it’s a way to escape reality and find solace in this piece of you that you can’t share with just yourself, so in the end, no, your fursona would not have to be the same kind of animal that you are,” Eggy finally decided with a firm nod of her head.
Wow, this was some major stuff, she was gonna have to track down Bee and her brothers about it later and let them know about this development, Dad™ too, he was the master after all, she should get his opinion just in case he thought that she was wrong about this.

Elari Grimm crown princess of elanaria snow leopard shifter (year 5)
- - Elanaria
Palace Gardens, Mfalwen
Giggling softly, Elari grabbed Canna by the hand and led her away from the ballroom. ”Usually no, guests aren’t allowed in the gardens past ten, Papa doesn’t want anyone getting lost or hurt, but there are some perks of being princess,” Elari explained as she guided Canna out and towards the door.
Even if she wasn’t princess though, they’d be okay. Elari knew the gardens better than she knew TAS, she had grown up playing in the flowers and searching for crystals in the caves, the gardens were as much of a home to her as her own room was and if there was one thing she knew she could share with Canna, it was this.
Luckily it didn’t take long to get outside, Elari knew how to weave between guests and get by without being stopped, especially when she was on a mission and in her opinion, this was a pretty important mission.
Once outside, Elari didn’t let go of Canna’s hand, instead she led the other girl further down the path that led into the garden, pausing for just a moment to drop Canna’s hand. ”Illuminous Floratica,” she whispered, cupping her hands in front of her mouth, suddenly a small, gentle purple light lit in the palm of her hands and glided up above her, Elari watched it with a smile on her face as the little light danced across the garden, calling to all the luminous flowers to bring them to life.
All around them the garden came alive as flowers bloomed above them and glowed against the dark night sky and in front of them stretched out a tunnel, carved out by the magical plants.
Smiling, Elari bounced on her feet. ”I’m so glad that worked,” she clapped her hands together, glancing up towards Canna. ”Its a simple spell but it doesn’t always work for me,” she explained, the smile never leaving her face as she took Canna’s hand again, pulling her into the tunnel. ”Come on, I want to show you something,” she explained lightly, and with that she began to run through the gardens, her ballet shoes gliding across the grass as she led Canna further away from the castle.
The palace gardens were wide and extensive, as her Papa and Baba had never wanted to feel closed in, and while the entire garden was magical, there was one spot in particular that Elari had always held dear.
Finally the path opened up to reveal a small clearing with a gazebo in the middle, a gentle waterfall trickled into a stream surrounding it, with small stepping stones inside the water, all around them were tall, colorful trees bending downwards, a clear patch of starlit sky shining directly above them and illuminating the clearing in a gentle glow.
Instantly a comfortable, familiar warmth washed over Elari as she let go of Canna’s hand and stepped forward, smiling back towards Canna. ”This is my favorite spot in the gardens, there’s just something about it so magical,” she explained, pointing over towards the gazebo. ”That’s where I first learned to dance, I still come here when I want to practice alone, it’s like my own perfectly hidden stage where my only audience are the plants and I know they’ll always enjoy the show.”
This place truly was magnificent to Elari and luckily for her, not many others knew of her hidden sanctuary. Obviously the rest of her family knew about it, however for the public, few had stumbled across its beauty.
Facing Canna, Elari beamed as she bounced on her feet. ”So, what do you think?”

Mallory Ethels goliath birdeater & koi fish Mallory smiled, "I'm glad! I can't wait to see." Before lightly regretting those words as she watched Eggy shove another horrible food combination in her mouth. Blech.
She was able to distract herself from that though as Eggy rambled in response to her second question. The question that was... horribly enough, food for thought. But, inside of her, Mallory felt it was important to ask because...
Well, Mallory didn't like her animal form. Just like the supposed squidwolf didn't like theirs.
Her anxiety slightly rose as Eggy spoke aloud, almost afraid of the answer Eggy would come to. Because what if it was yes? Mallory didn't think she'd be able to stomach making a fursona then. Last year was difficult enough with the whole first year project and this year wasn't going to be any better if the first years and second years had the same thing to do again.
The tangled up ball of feelings just unraveled upon her answer. The solid answer. And Mallory felt absolute relief about it. "Oh." She said at first, the only thing she could think to say upon the relief with that. With a small smiling growing, she cheerfully looked at Eggy, "I'm glad to hear that!"
She took a small pause. "Y'know, I might head off and think about that then. Leave you off to your foods, and maybe the next time I'll see you, I'll have an idea about what my inner fursona is... It was nice talking to you. You really opened my eyes tonight."
Mallory gave a small wave and goodnight to the girl before disappearing into the party.

Enzo Grimm prince of elanaria melanistic puma/angora rabbit shifter (year 5)
- - Elanaria
The Palace & TAS, Mfalwen
Enzo’s alarm blared angrily at him from underneath his pillow, not that it really mattered, he had been up for hours by now. Spring break had officially come to an end and now it was time to finish the last semester of the year and his last year in general. Most of the people he knew had plans of becoming an aide in the following year, however if you were to ask Enzo, he’d laugh and ask why anyone wanted to add even more years to their schooling?
What was the point?
What did he have there that was so great?
The alarm on his phone got louder, urging him to turn it off.
Enzo ignored it and rolled over, pulling his covers close to his face.
That’s when the second, far more effective alarm started.
”Enzo would you please turn off that hellish alarm?” Enoch asked as he poked his head inside Enzo’s room, his pasty white hair sticking out in just about every direction in various degrees of cowlicks and bedhead, dressed in his finest plague doctor pajamas, a pair of fluffy pink bunny slippers shielding his feet from the cold. ”Enzo, I know you’re up, don’t ignore me,” Enoch continued.
Enzo let out a dramatic yawn and stretched out his arm, bringing the covers over his head. ”I don’t know what you’re talking about, I’m asleep, so asleep I might as well be dead,” he argued teasingly and from his door he heard Enoch huff angrily and step back out, grumbling underneath his breath.
Enzo’s door clicked closed again and Enzo sighed, staring out towards his window. The star-clad dark blue curtains were still drawn, drowning out the light from outside with an impenetrable darkness.
Cozy.
Suddenly his door was swung open once again and before Enzo knew what was happening, Ko jumped right up onto his bed, ignoring the alarm as he hopped up and down, grinning down towards Enzo. ”School is starting again! I’m so excited, I get to play all the sports and I get to see Mur again, do you think he remembers me? Do you think he missed me? Do you think he’ll see me and be totally in shock from how attractive I’ve become over break and instantly fall in love with me?” Ko rambled excited.
Enzo didn’t bother to look up at him.
Ko was of the rare breed that actually enjoyed school for whatever reason and had to share it with the entire world.
”I’m sure he’ll take one look at you and instantly fall in love, now get off,” Enzo told his younger brother, reaching a bare arm out of his covers to gently shove Ko off his bed.
Ko rolled over like a dog and settled for flopping on the floor, a content sigh escaping his lips as he grinned up to the ceiling. ”This is it, Enzo, this is gonna be the semester where he finally notices me,” Ko said wistfully. ”You would think it would be easy, being a prince and all, but it really isn’t, maybe he just doesn’t pay attention to us that much,” he said and Enzo grunted in response, burrowing into his bed again.
Soon enough, his door creaked open a little more and Ephraim walked in.
Despite it being his first year at TAS, you’d think Ephraim was already an aide with how he acted.
”Papa wanted me to tell everyone that breakfast is ready, he wants to eat as a family before we go back to school, be down soon,” Ephraim instructed and instantly Ko jumped up from the floor.
”Breakfast?” He asked as his stomach comically growled, and just like that, Ko was gone, his door was closed, and Enzo was left alone, his only company coming from the blaring music of his alarm, ever so slightly muffled by his pillow.
Enzo rolled onto his back to stare up at his ceiling, his bed a tangled mess of limbs and covers.
Mr. Blue Skies repeated for the fifth time and for a moment, Enzo briefly considered turning off his alarm, however it was all the way under his pillow and that just seemed entirely out of reach for now.
So instead he lied there like a limp frog as the song rung in his ears, repeating itself over and over and over again.
Enzo wasn’t even sure how long it had been, how long he had been lying there and listening to the same song repeat itself until finally, his alarm gave up on him as well - either that or his phone died - and his room was suddenly plunged into a silence so sharp, you could cut yourself with it.
Then, in an instant, the silence was broken as a soft knock - two fast, one slow - echoed though his room like the sound of beating drums.
”Enzo?” Called a voice from outside. ”May I come in?”
Enzo shut his eyes and inhaled.
He should’ve expected this.
Finally, he sighed and gestured vaguely with his hand, waving it out in front of him. ”...Fine,” he croaked.
With permission given, in came the only sibling he seemed to have that ever bothered knocking.
Elari stood in his door way, dressed in her powder grey vest and lilac shirt, snowy white hair brushed to perfection as a purple headband kept it from falling out of place, and in her arms was a tray of various breakfast food.
The two shared a moment of eye contact and Elari smiled. ”You uh...you missed breakfast,” she started hesitantly, taking a step inside.
”Did I?” Enzo asked, finally finding the effort to sit up pressing his bare back to the back of his bed frame as Elari gently placed the tray over his lap and sat down on the edge of his bed.
”Yeah, Papa was about ready to bring breakfast up here, table and all,” Elari admitted through a light chuckle. ”I convinced him not to after reminding him that we couldn’t fit the table in here,” she said, gesturing towards Enzo’s room.
Enzo smiled slightly and stared down towards the tray. He could just about picture Papa doing that. ”Yeah...that sounds like him,” he agreed softly, eyes trailing over the food placed in front of him.
Bacon and eggs, French toast, a fruit cup, two Oreos and a glass of chocolate milk. ”...All my favorites,” he muttered to himself and then snorted, pointing towards the fruit cup. ”Except this, I don’t know what this is doing here,” he added and glanced over towards Elari with a slight, teasing smirk.
Elari smiled over at him. ”Yeah, I know what you like,” she said and pointed to the fruit cup. ”This however, is because even you need to eat your fruits and veggies,” she added and Enzo shrugged, waving her off.
”Nah, look at this bod, I’m doing fine,” he said with a smug smirk as he gestured to his shirtless chest.
Elari rolled her eyes. ”You look sweaty,” she told him and Enzo let out a dramatic gasp, placing a hand over his chest.
”Rude!”
Elari laughed lightly and the two fell into a moment of silence before finally, Elari spoke up again, looking over to meet his eyes. ”...Everyone’s worried about you,” she told him and instantly Enzo looked away. ”You haven’t missed breakfast since...” Elari’s eyes trailed towards Enzo’s arms.
A prick of unease shot through his veins and Enzo pushed the tray aside, finally pulling himself out of bed. ”I’m fine, I just dozed off or something, it’s fine,” he muttered defensively, already starting to his closet. ”I’m going to get dressed, so uh, you should probably leave, you’re my sister and all, it would be mega weird to get undressed with you here,” he told her without looking back towards her.
Even still, he could feel Elari staring at him as the back of his head burned.
Elari was quiet for a moment or so before she stood up and moved towards the door, her eyes never leaving him. ”...It won’t be so bad, Enzo, it’s always worse in your memories,” she told him, turning the doorknob. ”...Eat your breakfast, you need to get some food in your system if you want to handle school today, and don’t forget to eat the fruit too, okay?” She asked before she left, closing the door behind her.
As soon as he was once again alone, Enzo’s shoulders sagged as he let out a hefty sigh, eyes trailing down towards the floor.
Yeah, he seriously doubted it was worse in his memories.
—
”Okay, okay, I know you all have to go but remember to be careful and if you need anything at all, you can always call me-“ Papa stopped the car just outside the school, hurriedly ushering his kids outside.
Papa wasn’t able to drive them to school all the time, considering he had actual important stuff to do, but he tried to do it as often as possible.
”Okay, you should all have a packed lunch in your bags, I know the school provides meals but I wanted to give you all something special for your first day back, Kalahari, I already had enough blue milk delivered to last until summer, but if you do need more, just come home, okay?” Papa asked, counting each of them to make sure they were all there before promptly pulling each of them - one by one - into a hug and kissing the top of their head before sending them off towards the school building.
First it was Ephraim, then Ko and Kalahari, then Enoch, and then it was Enzo’s turn.
As soon as Papa had pulled him into a hug, he wrapped his arms around him and held him close, whispering in his ear. ”If it’s too much for you, that’s okay, you can come home, there’s no shame in that, okay?” He asked quietly.
”...I know,” Enzo added dumbly.
Papa hugged him extra tight for a second before letting him go and kissing the top of his head. ”Okay, good luck,” he told him and Enzo nodded in response, stepping back to let him hug Elari next.
After Elari’s hug ended, she came to join him, falling in place beside him as they walked. ”Alright, I have to miss our first class to run stuff by Vumbi for prom, will you be okay without me?” She asked, eyes following Enzo closely.
Enzo nodded. ”Yep, though I’m thinking I might just skip it and go smoke under the bleachers-“ Elari sent him a very stern look and Enzo put his hands up in mock surrender. ”Kidding! Promise,” he reassured and Elari furrowed her brow suspiciously at him for a moment or so before nodding.
”Good, alright, I’ll catch you later, be good, Enzo,” she instructed firmly before hurrying off and out of view.
Enzo watched her go, sighing.
Good.
Right.
Pushing the doors open, Enzo inhaled as he steadied himself one last time before entering the fray that was the first day of the last semester of the worst chapter of his life.
Instantly he was surrounded by chatter and about a billion hormonal teenagers as he started down the hallway towards his locker.
All around him people stopped and began to whisper to each other as he passed.
They thought they were being sneaky, but lets be honest here, there was nothing sneaky about parting like the Red Sea and pointing at him, thinking themselves clever with their hushed whispers with every step he took.
”I heard he spent the entire break doing community service-“ ”I heard he was drunk off his a- the entire ball-“
”Did you read the article about him? I can’t believe my sister shares a class with him!”
”Wow, you all really suck, like really, this is a really low point for you, isn’t it? I mean if the highlight of my day was making up rumors about the royal family in the grubby school hallways of TAS, I’d consider it the low of my life-“
Enzo paused.
Now that wasn’t a whisper, and he recognized that voice.
Looking up from his feet, he swerved to see where it was coming from and lo and below, in came his cousin, Barney, as she easily weaved her way through the crowd, stopping once she was beside him. ”Hey Enzo, are your shoes that interesting or do you always stare at the ground when you walk?” She asked and Enzo couldn’t help but smirk.
”Barney, it’s good to see you,” he told her and she grinned, arms folded.
”I know,” she replied confidently, pausing for a moment as she glanced around at the other students. ”Want me to turn them inside out for you? I can do that, you know, I’ve been studying up on chaos magic and I think I could turn their insides out and keep them all alive, what do you say? Ready to see some guts?” She asked with a smug grin plastered across her face.
Enzo chuckled softly and shook his head. ”Thanks, but no, I don’t think that would help my stellar reputation, if you catch me drift,” he told her and paused, looking her over. ”Besides, didn’t you get in trouble for messing with chaos magic last semester?”
Barney shrugged in response. ”Yeah, but like, what Cipher hasn’t? It’s kind of our thing, our birthright, if you will,” she explained and frowned, looking away from Enzo. ”Can’t even get in trouble around here without it already being done by someone else...” she muttered under her breath with just a hint of bitterness.
Enzo side eyed her and Barney perked up.
”Hey, wanna see something cool?” She asked with that signature Barney smirk as she jangled her Illuminati backpack at him.
Enzo raised his brow and pointed a suspicious finger at her backpack. ”Depends, it isn’t a spider wearing flip flops, is it? Halloween did that once to this giant tarantula we found before he released her back into the wild and lemme tell you this- that was the most annoying sound I have ever heard in my entire life,” he explained dramatically.
There was a beat as Barney sent him a weird look before finally she shook her head. ”...That was strangely specific, but no, don’t worry, there’s only one spider in here and Jerry doesn’t wear shoes,” she reassured.
With that, Barney stuck a hand inside her backpack and pulled out a book with a spider on it. ”Thank you Jerry, you can go now,” she told him, gently petting his head before picking the spider up and lowering him back into the backpack. With Jerry safely secure, Barney dusted off the book and looked up to Enzo, a devilish smirk pulling at her lips as she showed him the book.
It looked old, with a dark velvet purple cover marked with gold, a single black gemstone placed directly in the middle, there was no title, at least not that Enzo could read.
Curiously, he bopped his head to the side and ran a finger across the golden etching. ”Where’d you get this? What even is this?” He asked and instantly Barney grinned.
”Its from the restricted section in the castle, I snuck in last night while everyone was out dancing, you know all those magic books that the adults deem ‘too dangerous’ to be studied? Well...this is one of those,” she explained, practically giddy with herself.
Instantly, a prick of worry itched at his stomach. ”Barney, I’m not so sure you should be messing with this, Papa doesn’t ban something without really good cause, maybe it’s not such a good idea to-“ he made a subtle grab for the book and instantly Barney yanked it back, hugging it close to her chest as she sent Enzo a look of disgust and bewilderment.
”Wow, can’t believe even you are against it,” she sneered, opening the book as her fingers danced across the crisp, old pages. ”This is knowledge, pure, unfiltered knowledge, knowledge that so few people even have access too...think about it, Enzo, think about all the stuff I could learn about this, stuff now one else knows,” she cooed out softly, a trance like state glazing across her mismatched eyes.
Enzo snapped his fingers in front of her, causing her to jump slightly. ”Okay look, I get that it’s important to you, but sooner or later, Papa is gonna notice that it’s missing, so how about this, you can keep it for a day, but then tomorrow, put it back where it belongs, deal?” He asked as he looked his cousin over.
Papa had all kinds of magic books, many of them were older than he was, however he had always been more than willing to share them and the knowledge hidden inside the pages, if this was one of those few books that he didn’t share, it was because he had a good reason for it.
Barney grumbled, however with a relenting sigh she nodded in agreement and put the book back into her backpack. ”Fineeeee,” she dragged out. ”Have it your way...killjoy,” she muttered.
Enzo rolled his eyes. ”Yeah, you’ll thank me when you don’t die because you let a demon possess your bones and had your skeleton rip it’s way out of your body, killing you in the process,” he told her and Barney’s eyes lit up.
”Do you think there’s a spell for that?” She asked and Enzo shrugged.
”Probably, I don’t know, I’ve never read it-“ though if there was, he could only imagine what kind of chaos a Cipher could do with that, they’d probably make a whole new meaning to the whole “skeleton war” thing. ”What I’m trying to say is at least be careful, okay, Bar?” He asked.
Barney sighed and nodded. ”Alright, sure whatever, I’ll be careful, now if you don’t mind, I’ve got someone to share this with, someone who wont kill my fun,” she told him pointedly ad she started off, disappearing into the crowds of students as they rushed to get by.
[BARNEY’S STARTER EXIT: Feathertalon]
Enzo watched her go with a crinkled nose and a crooked frown. Someone really ought to keep a better eye on her, on that entire side of the family, honestly...
”Enzo-“ Enzo jumped, his heart leaping into his throat as Apathy seemingly appeared out of nowhere, standing directly behind him.
”Gah! Apathy, what in the living dimension of hell are you doing?” Enzo asked as he placed a hand on his chest and turned to look at his friend with wide eyes.
Apathy shrugged apathetically. ”It’s rude to interrupt conversations that don’t concern you,” he explained simply, as if that explained everything and more. ”Now that you’re done though, you should come see this,” he told him and with a flick of his head, Apathy gestured for Enzo to follow him down the hallway.
Not about to say no, Enzo did as he was told.
Apathy led him straight to his locker and stepped to side so Enzo could get a good look, gesturing to it with about as much excitement as an accountant during their first thirty minutes of work. ”Someone vandalized your locker.”
Enzo blinked, pushing himself forward to get a better look.
Sure enough, his locker had been completely vandalized.
Someone had keyed right across it, while someone else had spray painted what seemed to be a crude drawing of his disembodied head, while directly under it were some rather crude words to go with it.
He inhaled sharply. ”...yikes,” he muttered and Apathy nodded along in agreement.
”I thought it especially cruel for the implication that you should preform coitus with yourself, truly, what a disgusting insult,” Apathy commented solemnly.
Enzo frowned, cupping his chin with his hand. ”...Well, guess we gotta cover it up somehow, don’t we?” He asked and for the first time, Apathy actually smiled.
Granted it wasn’t a large smile, in fact Enzo probably would’ve missed it, had he not been paying close attention, but still, a smile was a smile and those were rare to come by from Apathy.
”I’ve got that covered-“ Apathy reassured as he knelt down on the ground and swung his backpack over, revealing neatly organized spray paint cans and designs off to the side, quickly, Apathy pulled out one of his more recent designs and pressed it against the locker. ”I was thinking, perhaps a phoenix, they’re good birds who raise from the ashes of death, it seems fitting,” he explained and reached into his backpack again. ”Though red really isn’t your color, so perhaps a blue phoenix would work best...” and with that, Apathy got to work.
Enzo stepped back, not wanting to get in the way until finally, Apathy was done and stepped back to reveal his work.
In place of the crude drawing and rather erm...inappropriate message, now stood an elegant blue to black phoenix bursting out of brilliant blue fire.
Enzo nodded appreciatively along. ”Wow, okay, I gotta admit, I’m impressed, Appy, this looks incredible! I should have you do this every year!” He cheered loudly.
Apathy raised his brow. ”I thought this was your last year? Instead of becoming an aide, you have chosen to abandon us,” he stated plainly, though if Enzo really looked he could detect a slight hint of resentment in Apathy’s tone.
Enzo sent him a look. ”You’re really not gonna let that go, are you?” He asked and Apathy shook his head.
”I plan on majoring in cryptid research and minoring in cryptology until I have to eventually take over Hym in my parents place, I imagine I will miss your presence during the next four years of my life,” Apathy told him.
Enzo placed a hand over his heart and gasped dramatically. ”My, Apathy! Do you actually care about me? I am touched, I love you too bro-“ he was instantly met with a spray cat pointed directly at his face.
”I won’t hesitate,” Apathy warned and Enzo put his hands up in mock surrender.
Seemingly pleased with this, Apathy knelt back down and put the spray paint away, rummaging around in his backpack for a moment or so longer before he pulled out a headband with two twisty, horn like sticks poking out from the top.
”Here, I made all the boogeymen one of these, it’s supposed to be alien antennas, like mine-“ he pointed up to his own headband, a neon green with very distinct alien antennas poking out. ”...However, yours melted and now they look...well.”
”Like devil horns?” Enzo offered and Apathy nodded.
Taking them from Apathy, Enzo looked his over, yep, these were very demon-ish, even more so up close.
Shrugging, he put them atop his head. ”Lucky for me, I look good in anything,” he joked with a smirk.
Apathy tilted his head to the side very owlishly. ”Really? I don’t see it.”
Enzo winced dramatically. ”Ouch! Right through the heart there, Apathy, really feeling the love,” he whined.
Apathy simply looked at him and collected his backpack. ”Love hurts, Enzo,” Apathy told him plainly as he swung his backpack over his shoulders. ”Now, if you excuse me, I need to go find Cameo so I can give a pair to her, I’ll see you in the treehouse for lunch, I have some new foods for everyone to try,” Apathy explained cryptically, nodding once to Enzo before he was off.
Well...Enzo wasn’t entirely sure what food Apathy had planned for him, but it was either going to be amazing or absolutely disgusting.
He couldn’t wait.
[APATHY STARTER EXIT: CreamCrow]
Finally, Enzo made it to his first class...a couple minutes late, but still there.
”Grimm, please be on time in the future, in my class we wait for no one, regardless of status,” the teacher drawled out as they scribble on their board.
Enzo winced slightly. ”Hi, sorry, won’t happen again, I promise,” he reassured and looked out towards the seats.
There was only one available, right next to Abraham.
Enzo crinkled his nose.
He...he didn’t really mesh well with Abraham.
Despite Abraham being friends with Enoch, Enzo had never quite gotten along with him, though that might’ve been because of what happened during their second year...he didn’t think Abraham had ever forgotten about that, if he was being honest.
Plus...not to mention, Abraham had never quite looked at him the same ever since the rumors started to spread.
Sighing, he accepted his fate and slid into the chair next to the Maraisille heir. ”...Heyyy there Abraham, good ol’ Abe, my old pal, my buddy, Abrabuddy, hahah...” he started awkwardly.
Abraham, back straight and position stiff, simply filed through his papers and refused to look Enzo’s way. ”Please refrain from talking to me, I have work to do, I wouldn’t want to get distracted, now would I?” He asked pointedly and Enzo winced.
Yeah he definitely hadn’t forgotten their second year.
”Ohhhkay....” Enzo trailed off, tapping his fingers across his desk as he glanced around the classroom.
He was pretty sure he shared this class with Chidi, where was he? He could certainly use a buddy right about now...
[ABRAHAM STARTER EXIT: .]
Unfortunately for him, there was no buddy to come to his rescue, and he would have to suffer through this class alone.
”Now, as I was saying, for your final semester, you are all to work together on a project, this project is worth over 80 percent of your grade, if you fail to complete it, I will be forced to fail you from my class,” the teacher explained without looking up towards them.
Great.
Hopefully Enzo would get paired up with Chidi or Elari, those were probably the only two people that could actually deal with him, or maybe the teacher would let him work with Apathy again like usual, even if they didn’t share this period, that would be nice.
”Im sure you are all wondering what this project is,” the teacher droned on. ”I want each of you, in pre-decided pairs of two, to study one of the territories across Elanaria, you will work together to come up with a unique and exciting project demonstrating what you have learned about each territory-“ ugh okay, so this was gonna be boring.
The teacher continued to talk, assigning pairs to their territory, however Enzo chose to tune it all out, he’d pick up on his name once it was his turn, until then though, he’d rather not bother.
That’s when something hit him and pulled Enzo out of his thoughts.
Frowning, he looked around until he spotted a ball of paper crumbled up on his desk.
He looked around until he found the person throwing it at him. Some girl he had never talked to before, with a magazine on her desk with titles like “discover the royal scandals” across it.
Ohh so she was one of those people, wasn’t she.
She threw another paper ball at him and Enzo caught it, giving her a pointed look. ”Hey, stop it,” he hissed out quiet.
She glared at him. ”I’m not afraid of you! Or your fake devil horns!” She hissed back and Enzo paused for a moment, glancing up towards the headband Apathy had made him.
Suddenly he got one of those evil ideas that made the grinch grin.
Leaning forward, Enzo tipped his head to the side and pointed a finger at the headband. ”Oh these? These are real-“ he lied, tilted his head towards her. ”Wanna come closer and find out for yourself?”
The girl squeaked and suddenly he heard his name.
”Enzo, stop harassing the other students!” the teacher barked. ”And take that off,” they added, pointing the tip of their pencil towards his headband.
Enzo stared wide eyed at them. ”But-im not, she-“ he sighed and bowed his head, quickly deciding it wasn’t worth the risk of detention again. ”Whatever...” he muttered, taking off the headband and sliding it into his bag.
”Good, now, as for you, I feel like perhaps you require a better partner than usual, someone that will actually make you do the project,” the teacher informed him, staring directly at him. ”That is why I have paired you with Jewel,” they stated, looking down towards their clipboard. ”Jewel Doric and Enzo Grimm, you two with be working together on this assigned, with your project being about the territory known as Arawasa,” they announced.
Enzo blinked. ”...Jewel who?” he blurted out, brow knitting in conclusion. He had never heard of some girl...or guy named Jewel in his class before.
The teacher gave him a look and pointed towards a chair across the room where a girl with finger and white striped hair sat, simple glasses framing her slightly mismatched blue eyes. Huh...well, she wasn’t really his type, but hey, glasses usually meant smart right?
So once the teacher gave them permission to move around and sit beside their partner, Enzo gathered his stuff up and started towards Jewel’s desk. ”So-“ he started, placing a hand at the edge of her desk as he leaned over towards her, a crooked smile itching up his lips as he looked down towards the strange girl. ”You must be Jewel.”

Jewel Doric nonshifter
To say that Jewel had noticed people finally entering the classroom would be a lie. She wasn’t the most perceptive when it came to other human beings around, having learned to ignore them to instead focus on her own thoughts instead. Nine times out of ten what other people had to say wasn’t even interesting, and Jewel didn’t have the time to listen to people who were just going to drone on about stupid things like the weather or overdramatized high school drama. She also didn’t care what other people had to say since she knew, most likely, it wasn’t anything important or anything that actually pertained to what she cared about. Fortunately for her people seemed to realize now that she wasn’t interested in anything they had to offer, so typically she was left alone to her own devices. Every so often there might be the one odd person out there to try and engage her with petty conversation, but she’d either shoot them down quickly or just straight up ignore them until they got the hint and left her alone. Jewel just wasn’t a people person. Quite frankly she was somewhat self-absorbed with herself and her studies. It was all she cared about, and anything that deviated from that was a nuisance to her that she would get rid of as soon as she could.
Even now, as the teacher’s voice entered the now full classroom, Jewel still didn’t quite give up enough of her attention to notice the other students. She just didn’t care about them or what they had to say, so any chatter they started up was promptly ignored by Jewel. The only voice she cared about was the teacher’s, and truth be told, she’d just as soon block out what the teacher was saying as she would any other student if the teacher started to drone on about anything other than what they were doing today. If Jewel decided that the teacher was also going off topic with conversation, she’d ignore them too and simply continue on with her own thoughts that were in her own head. Afterall, her thoughts were the most important ones to her, the most interesting as well. Nobody could hold up a conversation with her as well as her own self, even if the conversation was just a mental back and forth between her own thoughts as she attempted to do her schoolwork or focus on her out of school projects she had given herself.
There had been a time when she was younger when her twin brother, Radar, would try to get her out and socialize, but he had quickly come to realize that mingling with other people just wasn’t Jewel’s thing. She was glad her twin brother had his own set of friends and his own social life, but Jewel didn’t require any of that. All she needed was herself. … Well, she had grown attached to those beetles her mom had given her some years back even if, by now, the original beetles were long gone and now she was left with the great times fifteen or more grandspawn of those first beetles she had been given. While she had kept the first beetles long enough for them to reproduce, she probably would have had them for longer if not for the fact that “animal instinct” - could she really claim animal instinct for herself? - had taken a hold of her and she ended up impulsively “hunting down” the beetles and eating them, but come on, she hadn’t been able to stop herself, and it also turned out that beetles were delicious. And obviously she didn’t eat all her beetles or she wouldn’t still have any left.
Beetles aside and back to the original topic here, Jewel just didn’t do people. It wasn’t what she was into, though she held nothing against people who enjoyed the company of others. If that’s what they wanted, then so be it. Besides, that meant people were more than likely going to leave her alone since they would be off interacting with their friends.
Which, as a side note, since this was her last year as a regular student it would probably be a good idea for her to learn the names of her roommates, but also this was her last year as an actual student, so did it really matter at this point? It wasn’t like she did anything with her roommates and it wasn’t like they were important to her. So, yeah, she just wasn’t going to give any time of her day to figuring out exactly who they were.
Eventually Jewel was pulled out of all these thoughts when she realized the teacher was actually bringing up something important. A class project. One that was worth over eighty percent of the grade. If Jewel failed this she failed the class, and she couldn’t have that. It was a large request the teacher was asking of them, but for Jewel this would be a piece of cake. She wasn’t worried at all. If the teacher had said this project was worth their entire grade she still wouldn’t fret. She was Jewel Doric, and no assignment got the best of her, regardless on if it was a large portion of her grade. If anything she enjoyed assignments like that. It gave her the incentive to actually put some thought into her work, unlike other projects where she didn’t even have to put a single second of thought into it to get a perfect score.
Though, there was one slight hitch with this. It was a group project.
Jewel’s nose crinkled in disgust at the thought. If there was one thing she despised when it came to class work, it was when a teacher pushed for something to be done in pairs. She had never understood the reason behind group projects, afterall, wasn’t school supposed to be measuring her individual intellect, not her intellect mushed together with the, more than likely, below average ideas of some other student? It was ridiculous in her opinion, which was why she had long come up with a strategy for these so-called group projects. Anytime she was forced to work together with somebody, she’d simply threaten the other student, telling them that if they dared tried to actually help her with the project she’d do something like drill a hole through their skull and pull their brain out through the wound. That typically worked followed up by the promise that she’d act like there had been help involved when in reality she had done all the work. She’d give them a ten out of ten on participation and even go so far as to tell the teacher that her partner had been an amazing help even though the most interaction she had had with her partner was threatening them with a cranoitomy. But hey, there was no harm in that, now was there? She was helping out some poor kid that had probably never gotten a grade above a seventy-five before, and wasn’t that, like, some sort of lowkey community service right there? Helping idiots out with their grades? So Jewel could say she had an amazing community service record, and that just looked even better on her in the long run.
So far the teacher had yet to call out her name and inform her on who she was going to be stuck with for this project. Jewel was the slightest bit curious to know who it was going to be - not that she’d know them or anything. What was going to happen was they’d pair up for this class, Jewel would give them her little spiel about how she worked alone, and then that would be the end of this “partnership”. She’d get to do all the work, pass the assignment, help out her partner who probably needed a boost in grades anyway, and that was that. A beautiful relationship really, one built on threats and never seeing one another ever again.
It wasn’t long before her attention snapped back up to the teacher upon hearing her name said out loud. She blinked, looking up and over to the teacher, the slightest semblance of curiosity washing over her face as she waited in silence to hear who she had been paired up with.
Soon enough the question she had was answered. She knew who she was paired with.
Enzo Grimm.
That name sort of rang a bell. A very small bell, one that almost didn’t make any noise, but it was enough for Jewel to realize that she had heard that name before.
Enzo Grimm. He was part of the actual royal family, he wasn’t one of the thousands of Grimms that were just an offshoot. If he was then she wouldn’t have the faintest idea of who the guy was, but since she knew she knew of him, then he had to be one of the king’s children. Jewel was aware that there were three of his children in the same grade as she was, but there really wasn’t much she knew about any of them. She knew there was the heir, but she was a princess, and clearly that wasn’t Enzo. There was the studious one, the prince that was on his way to becoming a doctor, and then there was…
Oh.
Oh no.
Oh no.
There was also the hot one, and as Jewel’s gaze found who this Enzo Grimm was, she realized he was the hot one, and he was heading right to her desk.
Rather than be some typical girl who melted at the very presence of a hot guy, Jewel put herself on the defensive. She wasn’t about to let this project get the best of her just because she was paired with the Grimm that looked a lot like the king himself, which, yes, Jewel would admit to also finding the king incredibly attractive, but with the king she realized he was taken and there would never be a chance, but with his son...well, there was a slight chance there.
Snap out of it! She chided herself, shaking her head. Jewel couldn’t let herself get distracted just because Enzo was hot and looked a lot like his hot dad. It wasn’t even like she was going to actually be working with Enzo beyond this one class period considering she was adamant about doing everything herself, but...but maybe once she had finished her work here she could give herself a little break from studying and working on her own personal projects to fantasize about some what ifs and make up some dumb little stories in her head about particular things.
Snapping herself out of these thoughts for a second time, Jewel looked up at Enzo as he made his way to her desk. She swallowed any initial comments that might have come out and ever so slightly narrowed her eyes as she looked him over.
That’s when she noticed that his hand was uncomfortably close to the soda bottle she had sitting on her desk. ”Move your hand,” she muttered, narrowed eyes darting from him to his hand to the soda and then back up to his face. While she didn’t think his initial thought process in putting his hand where he had was to take her soda, Jewel wasn’t about to chance it, not when she needed every ounce of that soda for her survival. She didn’t care if this guy was hot or not, she wasn’t about to let him take her drink.
While most of her attention was still focused on his hand and how close it was to her soda, Jewel allowed herself to give just an inch of her focus on the task at hand. ”Yes, I’m Jewel, so that makes us partners for this, but before we get started on any of this, I’d like to lay down some ground rules.” She eyed the prince, almost as if she were waiting for him to challenge her. She had yet to deal with a project partner that challenged her over the ground rules, but something about Enzo made her almost wary about it. Maybe it was the fact that his hand was way too close to her soda, or maybe she was just being overly defensive due to the fact that he was attractive and she was doing her best to get rid of any stray thoughts about that, but either way, she was guarding herself over this, keeping an ever watchful eye on Enzo Grimm in case he tried to pull something on her.

Astrid Ililoxa axolotl and cat shifter
Astrid was doing her best to ignore the person walking beside her a few steps back. She could see him out of the corner of her eye, but she did all she could to try and not think about him being there. She was sure if she just pretended that she actually was going to attend class today then he’d back off and get off her tail, but even as she made her way toward her locker, the nuisance behind her was still right there.
A low sigh slipped from her lips. Exasperation covered her face as she turned from her locker to meet the all too familiar gaze of her twin brother, the look on his visage feigning innocence. ”What do you want?” Astrid huffed, staring up at her brother. ”You’ve been following me since we got here.”
Blaine cocked his head to the side. His eyes went wide as they flashed with hurt, but Astrid knew it was only a façade. ”Can’t I walk to class with my own sister?”
Astrid rolled her eyes. ”When have you ever cared about walking with me, and when have you ever cared about actually going to class?” Neither of the two oldest catlotls cared much about attending classes. Astrid didn’t see the point of going if she wasn’t all that good at academics in the first place. She passed her classes for the most part, but that didn’t mean she was any good at them. Magic classes had always come natural to her and she managed to excel there, but she already knew all about that magic, and honestly, while TAS was the best school for magic, its curriculum didn’t even begin to get close to what Astrid needed to learn. She, along with her two brothers, were literally the three most powerful magical beings in existence. Only their parents were able to truly teach them about their powers and how to handle them, and the only teacher at the school that could probably somewhat teach her and her siblings was a Cipher, and as an Ililoxa, mingling with a Cipher for any reason other than to taunt them was strictly forbidden.
A sharp short of laughter from Blaine snapped Astrid out of her thoughts. ”You have such little faith in me. Maybe I do plan on going to class today, but you fail at being a decent enough sister to even ask and know about my plans for today.”
”I don’t care about what you’re doing today. You’ll do whatever you want like always. Now,” Astrid grumbled, narrowing her stony gray eyes as she shot a glare up at her brother, ”can you leave so I can get to my plans for today?”
That was apparently the wrong thing to say to Blaine.
Astrid could tell that his interest was piqued. He perked up, looking to stand at his full height now - not that he was even all that tall. A dark, sly smirk pulled at the corner of his lips as he looked down at his sister. ”I suppose I’m not that much better of a sibling, but let me fix that. What are your plans for today? I mean, I doubt you’re actually going to class.” He nodded toward Astrid’s locker before looking back at her.
Astrid shrank under his gaze. She knew by the way he was looking at her and the way he had spoken his words that there was a hidden meaning in his question. This wasn’t a topic she wanted to deal with right now, but she also knew there was no way to avoid it, not when it was coming from Blaine. He had a way of getting under her skin that nobody else did. He knew how to play it just right, how to get to her and how to make her crack. One would think that, being siblings, and twins at that, they’d have a better relationship, but reality sucked, and in reality, Astrid played the part of prey while Blaine loomed over her like the predator.
Astrid contemplated not answering him, but she realized quickly that keeping silent would probably be the worst response to give.
After a moment of tense silence, Astrid merely shrugged. ”Probably just gonna hang out somewhere and practice some magic. Nothing special.” She kept her voice low and avoided meeting her brother’s gaze. One wrong motion and he’d have her caught, but she was determined to keep that from happening.
But Blaine was also skilled at reading between the lines.
”You’re gonna go meet up with that Cipher, aren’t you?” He inquired softly, almost menacingly.
”N-no, I-“
”You stuttered.”
Astrid’s face flushed with warmth. She glanced down at the ground as she clutched the one notebook she did have in her hands. She had been caught. Anything she would try to say or do now would only be used against her.
As subtle as she could she tried to look for an escape route, but she was pressed up against her locker, and it was becoming all the more obvious that Blaine wasn’t about to just let her go about her business.
That thought was only proven even more when her brother leaned forward. Astrid chanced a look up at him, and what she saw made her wish she had never looked up at him at all.
A knowing glint darkened his gaze, a twisted smirk lifting his lips into an amused, threatening expression. ”You know you aren’t supposed to be all buddy buddy with a Cipher. What’s going to happen when you get caught?” He tilted his head as if that would give him a look of innocence despite everything right now. ”What happens when I get tired of keeping your little secret?”
Blaine was right. She wasn’t supposed to be on friendly terms with any of the Cipher kids, and nobody was supposed to know about her...friendship with Barney, but Blaine had found out. He had weaseled his way into figuring it out, and now he held it against her head like some sort of bargaining chip. If she did one thing wrong then he’d go off and tell their parents, though it was their mom that Astrid was actually scared of if she learned about this, especially considering who Barney’s own mother was. If this was some other Cipher that had come from any other Cipher parent then maybe her mom’s anger wouldn’t be as harsh, but since Barney was the daughter of one Cipher in particular, well...that worried Astrid to no end.
Her thoughts must have taken longer than Blaine had liked as he soon stepped away from Astrid, something of an annoyed hiss escaping him. Astrid dared a glance his way as he turned, about to head off, and cast a sideways glance her way. ”You know, now that I’ve thought about it, I’ve got better things to do than hang around you all day. Go on and do your thing.” He started to walk off, but just before he ventured too far, Blaine paused to look behind his shoulder, that threatening smirk once again on his face. ”But don’t come crying to me for help when you get caught. That will happen eventually, you’re too obvious.” And just like that, Blaine was gone.
Astrid took in a deep breath. She needed a moment to calm herself after that. Blaine was right about a lot of things, while a lot of his comments were also just used to upset her. Astrid knew that, but he still managed to do just that. What would happen if she got caught being with Barney by the wrong person? What would happen if Blaine ratted her out to their mom? She would be a goner.
A few more minutes went by. Astrid stood by her locker, taking some time to placate her nerves just enough so that she could handle walking without making a fool of herself. Once she felt like she was steady enough, she instantly began to seek out the one person she knew who would make her feel better. After everything that happened she knew it was a fool’s move to do this, but Astrid couldn’t help herself, and right now, she needed to be with Barney.

Cameo Diem If Cameo slammed the car door harsher than what was acceptable, then her parents could complain to her whenever they saw her next. It wasn't even like they were there to see the unspoken tantrum as it was her aunt dropping her off at the school this day.
They'd have the gall to complain about how rude she was being to family while they wouldn't even bother to see her off. Keep her home an extra, unneeded two days because they 'missed her so much and wanted to spend as much time as they could with her' but couldn't be half-arsed to actually come with and see her off.
Oh, and Cameo was still pissed about that. It was because of them that she was only arriving in Mfalwen today, forced to wake up hours before she was used to so they could start the drive. All because her family couldn't be bothered to have allowed her to come to Mfalwen two days early when there was a hug party being held. She didn't even like parties.
But she did like her friends and she knew they'd be there. Sure, it was because they were all royalty and nobility, but it didn't change the fact she could have been there with them and having some amount of fun instead of being stuck at home watching her parents play the weirdest version of checkers she has ever seen (since she discovered what normal checkers was like) from the couch.
It wasn't even as thought Faif wouldn't have wanted to come to. She had tried that avenue she was that desperate to get out. He could have gone and bothered his friends after having bothered her the entire week at home, but none of their parents would still allow it. And they let Faif do anything he wanted! So her gamble was for nothing and all of Saturday and Sunday was spent with him of all people because everyone thought she genuinely wanted to spend time with her cousin and it wasn't just a desperate attempt to leave Bixbite sooner.
Speaking of said cousin, she was upset that she hadn't managed to walk away from the car fast enough before he had managed to grab hold of her arm and linked them together. All while smiling and waving to his mother who was undoubtedly upset in the car because of Cameo's attitude.
She couldn't very well escape further though and was left waiting for the woman to drive off back home and tell her parents all about it. It was only when the engine went vroom, vroom and she heard tires squealing as she drove away did the two start walking into the school- at Faif's discretion and direction.
"Cameeeo," she wanted to groan as soon as he started talking, "You really ought to lighten up. You should know by now that a frown like yours really doesn't make you favorable to look at. We're simply surrounded by people as well."
"I feel like you say this every time you see me rightfully unhappy in public. Can people not show their emotions without being judged, especially when no one is being hurt from it?" she shot back.
She hissed softly as he pinched her in rebuttal. "Mind you, my mother's car door and feelings were hurt by you little display. Lighten. Up."
She shot him a fake smile that radiated anger,
"Better," He still responded with. Of course to him, as long as it looked like a smile, the emotions behind it didn't very well matter. She let the smile drop. "Oh, come on, I understand that you're upset we couldn't come here sooner, but is it so big of a deal you'll let it fester all day?"
She hoped her silence was answer enough. She didn't plan on letting it fester, planning to let it go once she actually found one (or better, all) of her friends.
"Ugh, come on. Maybe it says something that the universe-"
"Our parents, you mean."
"- didn't want you to see them. I mean, come on, Cameo, you're a large step up from all of them. The fact you want to associate with them when you aren't half as troublesome or strange as them is inane."
"And I," Cameo retorted, upset at how easily he ignored her interruption, "Would rather hang out with them than the thoughtless, rude, judgmental friends."
"You're just being rude because you feel slighted. I'm telling you, you'll realize soon enough that they simply aren't good for you," he responded, absolutely unaware how horrible he was for Cameo's mental health. "You'll see it before the end of the year is up."
She gave a snort in response. He frowned at her, before furthering his point, "You will. And when you do, you are free to join me and my friends." Your clique, Cameo mentally offered as a replacement.
So she rolled her eyes and waved the hand that wasn't stuck with his. "Sure, we'll see about that." He opened his mouth to say something in response, something that she inevitably wouldn't care or believe in. Something that she didn't really here because she spotted a familiar face who was so distinctly marked by the crescent moon birthmark, that she immediately started wiggling her arm out of his.
Loudly speaking over whatever he was saying or was planning on saying, Cameo said, "Oh! Would you look who it is! Apathy! My friend," she hoped the emphasis on that word and sharp smile got the point across that she wasn't going to leave them anytime soon, "Sorry cuz', but I have to go and say hi, you know how it is. Tell Sharon and whoever else you hang out with that I say hi- or don't!"
As soon as she was free, she booked it to the cryptid, ignoring the frown that was left on Faif's face as she left and even more so the way he quickly turned around in the other direction. Probably off to find his own friends.
She waved, hoping to catch Apathy's attention, whilst pulling out her phone to mute any responses she might get from her family for the rest of the day. An issue to deal with at night. An issue she could skip over completely today. "You wouldn't believe how happy I am to see you!"

Enzo Grimm prince of elanaria melanistic puma/angora rabbit shifter (year 5)
- - Elanaria
TAS, Mfalwen
Enzo had honestly, never seen this girl before in his entire life. Was she new? Was she some weird foreign exchange student? TAS didn’t have as many of those anymore, but he had heard stories from his fathers and other family members about transfers from all across the globe, even sometimes, off the globe, yeah you could say some of them were really...out of this world, yeahhhh.
Snorting at his own joke, Enzo continued to look the girl over. She looked like a nerd, like one of those people that got really excited about math and passed out or something, Enzo didn’t really know her, so he couldn’t say for certain, but he wouldn’t be surprised if she had once hyperventilated because of math or something equally boring. Still, even if she wasn’t exactly his type - though could he really claim he had a type? The people he had found attractive ranged from pretty much everyone on the spectrum - she was still pretty. Her hair looked like some sort of caramel ice cream and she had two different colored eyes, sort of like Apathy but not quite.
Maybe working with her wouldn’t be too bad...
Offering a smile, he leaned forward a little, prepared to say something princely, when Jewel cut him off, rudely telling him to remove his hand from her desk. He raised his brow, heart faltering a little. Okay so...she probably heard about the rumors, that would make sense, who hadn’t heard about them by now? She was just...she was just reacting the same way anyone else would, he couldn’t let it get to him.
So, doing his best to ignore the sort of empty pit like feeling growing in his stomach, Enzo tilted his head to the side and watched her. ”Ground rules?” He inquired, sliding his hand further on the desk. Of course there were going to be rules, she was probably gonna make sure he stayed a foot away from her or something like that, probably would make it clear that she didn’t want anything he was selling and wasn’t going to let him get away with things because he’s a prince or whatever.
It was all stuff Enzo had already heard before, he could deal with it.
Rolling his eyes, Enzo pulled himself up and sat down on the edge of Jewel’s desk, shrugging. ”Alright that’s fair, gotta put me in my place, fine, I don’t know exactly what you’ve read, but I don’t really expect to change your mind on any of it either, so by all means, plant some of those rules in the dirt of my heart,” he said dramatically, placing a hand across his chest as he all but lied down across Jewel’s desk as if he were to spread across a couch and request to be painted like a French girl.
The dramatics were a little over the top but it helped to ease the pain of the obvious judgment going on. He wasn’t usually put with people he didn’t already know, usually the only people that even dared be paired with him were his siblings or his friends. Enzo wasn’t really sure why they were mixing it up this time - maybe it was punishment, maybe this rude, nerd girl was being punished for her secret naughty side - and the teacher could think of no better punishment than to be paired with the devilishly handsome demon prince. “So, why’d you get paired with me? What did you do? I mean, I’m assuming you did something, nobody willingly gets paired with me just cus-“ he paused, cutting himself off, something catching his eye.
As he lied there, making it near impossible to look at anything other than himself, his eyes landed on the soda bottle on her desk and well, curiosity struck.
Head tipped gingerly to the side, Enzo eyed the soda carefully. ”Hello, what is this? I’ve never seen a soda like that, what flavor is it? Is it good?” He asked, scrambling back up into a sitting position as he made a grab for the drink.
Was he aware that he was probably being extra annoying right now? Yes. Was he going to stop? No.
Listen, this girl had already made up her mind about him, so instead of spending the entire time moping around because someone else didn’t like him, or trying to convince her that a majority of the rumors about him weren’t true, he was just gonna enjoy himself.

Eternal Blood Cipher-Grimm rotterman pinscher/unicorn/demon shifter (year 4)
- - Elanaria
TAS, Mfalwen
”Oh be careful, Barney, don’t you know how dangerous books can be? Sure it’s just a book and I’m the last person who can judge you considering everything I’ve done, but while my name might be Enzo, my middle name is hypocrite!” Barney mimicked Enzo’s voice angrily asks she stalked down the halls, clutching her backpack close to her chest.
It was irritating. Enzo was supposed to be the cool one right? The “bad boy rebel, I claim everyone hates me but half the school wants to bang me” type, right? Shouldn’t he, of all people, be even more supportive of Barney’s new book? But no, Mister “how dare I be both mysterious and good looking, my reputation is ruining me” had to go and be a buzzkill.
Also, on the record, Barney wanted to make it clear, that she - a lesbian - was not attracted to her cousin. That was gross and wrong on very many levels, she just had classmates and she heard plenty from them.
Huffing, Barney pressed her back against the wall, brushing against the cold locker. ”People just...don’t get it,” she muttered to herself, eyes flickering back down towards the backpack. She was stuck. Stuck between two sides of herself. Really, two sides of her family, honestly. The side that didn’t actively encourage dark magic, that was royal and noble and respected, the side of her where people expected a princess and were disappointed when they got someone else.
Then the other side, the chaotic, “limits don’t exist” side that actively encouraged exploring the darker side of magic, that made a competition out of getting into detention and a bet on who would lose an eye first. That side of her was wild and untamed and that was exactly what people expected from that half, they expected the chaos, and honestly? Between both sides, she doubted anyone could pick her apart from the rest.
It was hard to find yourself when you were surrounded by so many people, creating and adding to this family reputation that you were expected to keep. Even her last name left her in the middle of two extremely well known families.
Cipher-Grimm.
There was no room to be anyone else there.
But, maybe, maybe this was the start to finally finding something unique, something neither side of her family had gotten to explore before, this was her chance to stand out on her own, not as a Grimm or as a Cipher, but as Barney, just good old plain Barney in all her own awesomeness.
Honestly, Enzo had it easy. He created a reputation for himself, he wasn’t stuck living in between two kinds of people, expected to somehow be both.
The bell rang in her ears and Barney slouched down onto the floor. She should be in class by now, but she didn’t plan on going anyways. Instead, she opened the backpack, smiling down at the spider inside. ”Hey, I’m gonna need that book again, okay?” she asked, grabbing the book from underneath Jerry’s hairy legs.
Her eyes fell upon the intricate design of the cover, her lips curving upwards in an involuntary smile as she traced her fingers along the spine of the book. There was an energy radiating off it, the sort of energy that hummed against her fingertips and left a faint thumping in the back of her ears.
It was power.
”I wonder what secrets you hold...” she whispered to the book, daring to flip it open, her fingers gliding across the old parchment. Something about the book pulled her in, almost like a trance.
Surely if her uncle really didn’t want people to read it, he would’ve destroyed it. Restricted section was only there to keep those who couldn’t handle its power out. But Barney could handle it, she knew she could.
Suddenly, she snapped out of the trace and closed the book, shooting her gaze upwards as the sound of footsteps echoed against the cold floors of the halls.
Hurriedly, Barney slid the book back into her backpack and got up, slinging it around her shoulder, her muscles tense. She wasn’t really expecting interruptions as most people were in class.
Luckily for her, she knew the person and as soon as she saw Astrid’s face, her muscles relaxed and she instantly bounded over towards the catlotl, a bounce to her steps. ”Astrid! I was looking for you-“ at least she was before she got distracted by her own anger. ”Wanna see something cool?” She asked, a sly, mischievous grin stretching across her face as she held her backpack up, practically giddy at the thought of sharing her newest book with her friend.

Chidi
Chidi had a very specific morning schedule that he liked to follow, and it had been disrupted with the first day of school. He hadn’t gotten his morning workout done, and he’d missed breakfast, and he was cranky. And cranky Chidi certainly had less of a chance of making new friends than normal Chidi - who already kinda sucked at it. He reached up to touch his hair… quills? Another thing - he didn’t quite know what to call the slicked back black and white mess upon his head. One was sticking up in an odd position and he smoothed it back into place before adjusting the red backpack hanging from his left shoulder, pushing open the door to the building, and taking a deep breath.
He was good at sticking to the shadows. He was good at going unnoticed and slipping under the radar. And he normally wasn’t someone that liked to go unnoticed, but the first day of school was truly a free for all. It was intimidating for anyone that didn’t fall into the category of high school royalty. Anyone who wasn’t the king or queen of the student body or one of their loyal followers… or mindless minions, if you looked at it from another angle. He smirked a little at his own little joke there. Personally, Chidi had no interest in popularity. He just wanted friends, which he had found through Enzo and the prince’s gang of friends.
Now, this is where Chidi could get a little philosophical. Barring any actual true jerk moves, was any high school clique better than another? Was it the popular kids that seemed to have everyone wrapped around their little fingers? Or maybe the class clowns that knew how to get a laugh out of even the grumpiest of classmates? Or maybe it was the oddballs or the eclectic groups that refused to let themselves get grouped into a nice, pretty category? Really, it didn’t matter. The cliques would - hopefully - fall apart after they left these halls, and that thought is what comforted Chidi. In just a couple years, he would be free of the restrictions of high school, and he would be Chidi. What stuck with him would be the lessons he learned and the friend that he made, not the cliques he was in (or, more accurately, rejected from) or the grades he got in even the worst of his classes.
Yeah, Chidi was a tough guy that liked to talk a lot bigger than he needed to, but he liked to think he had a philosophical side. Or not. He’d taken a philosophy class once just out of curiosity and it hadn’t gone over well. He was told to stop rambling and focus on the topic at hand, even if it was something that he wasn’t quite interested in. Bit ironic for a philosophy class, wasn’t it? He also wasn’t one to study philosophy. He just kinda liked to think deeply about certain things and come up with his own theories. Were any of them true? Probably not, but that’s why Chidi kept this stuff locked up inside.
As he realized he wasn’t quite sure where he was, he made his way through the stream of students to the side of the hallway to see what classroom he was near. Okay, he could find his way to where he needed to be. He quickly scanned the faces around him, looking for someone he knew and at least somewhat liked. No luck. He began to make his way to the classroom he was supposed to be on, his brain going on autopilot as he zoned out again. He wasn’t necessarily trying to think about anything deep. He was just zoning out to zone out.
When he arrived at his destination, he slipped into a seat… just in time to see Enzo and a girl getting into some argument over his headband. Chidi winced, wishing he could give Enzo a sympathetic look, but it appeared that his arrival had evaded everyone’s attention.
Instead, he just looked ahead until he heard his name and the name of his partner. Abraham. Well, they clearly weren’t in the same social circle. Otherwise, Chidi would know who he was. He followed the teacher’s gaze to the other boy and just gave a slight nod to the teacher before letting the teacher’s voice fade out again. He didn’t exactly care who was paired with who. When the class broke off to meet with their partners, Chidi moved over and slid into a desk near Abraham, clicking his pen a few times and keeping his expression as neutral as possible until he figured this kid out.
”Chidi,” he said, sticking out a hand, but not making much more of an introduction than that.

Apathy Kingsleigh heir of hym common crow/golden retriever shifter (year 5)
- - Elanaria
TAS, Mfalwen
School was kind of like that gross wart on your toe that you couldn’t get rid of, but it also kind of fascinated you. Apathy actually wasn’t entirely against the existence of school, unlike most of his peers. However he was far from a scholar or - cryptid forbid - popular, honestly Apathy couldn’t imagine much worse than that, but he still enjoyed school. School was where he met his friends, and while Apathy had always been on the original thought of not needing friends, he enjoyed the ones he had now.
They didn’t mind him or his younger brother, they respected his boundaries and appreciated his ideas. They were good people, and in the events where Apathy would potentially destroy the world, he would spare their lives.
Beyond his friends, Apathy also liked to see how “normal” teenagers reacted and what exactly they did. Disappointingly, high school didn’t have nearly as much lethal drama as he was expecting, but it did have plenty of the other half of all the teen dramas he had seen in his life - which Apathy wasn’t ashamed to admit was a lot - and by that he meant there were plenty people kissing in hallways, giggling over crushes, and sighing dreamily in class. That was the part of school he could do without.
Teen dramas promised him murder and mystery, not make out sessions and masturbation...well they promised that too, but Apathy had been holding out hope that that wouldn’t be the case in actual school.
Truly, the unfiltered, hormonal teenage libido was by far the worst part of school.
Apathy paused in his tracks, spotting a poster on a locker, the poster was an eye straining pink and had a blonde girl with pink highlights and frog like markings smiling on the front, the words “Sharing is Caring! XOXO Sharon!” Were written in an obnoxiously cutesy font.
Apathy wanted to puke.
Sharon Waybright and her band of fake roses were a close second on his list of least favorite things school had to offer.
”Oh gross, it’s at my locker,” a feminine - irritatingly so - voice rang in his ears and Apathy turned to see Sharon herself walking up, arms folded. ”What do you want? Ew don’t tell me you’re some sort of secret admirer,” she scoffed at the thought.
Apathy raised his brow. ”If I was to ever admire someone from secret, I trust myself to at least admire someone with a brain, which you lack, you’re like a jellyfish, alive without a brain and people mistake you for trash,” he said, voice completely monotone.
Sharon’s nose scrunched up in annoyance, however she seemed to collect herself back together rather quickly and instead flashed him with a sickeningly sweet, horribly fake smile. ”It’s okay, you’re Apathy right? The Hym heir? Also part of that sad little group full of nobodies, what do you call yourselves? The oogie boogies?” She asked, lifting her arm up.
”The boogeymen,” Apathy corrected.
”Right, that’s what I said-“ Sharon dismissed. ”Anyway, I know it must be hard for you, to be stuck in a group with such a terrible person like prince Enzo, if you find comfort at my locker, I’m okay with it, after all...” she trailed off, nodded her head to the poster. ”Sharing is caring!” That’s when Sharon made a fatal mistake.
She placed her manicured hand on Apathy’s shoulder and something in him snapped.
In an instance, Apathy had grabbed her arm and twisted it the wrong way.
Sharon screeched and instantly backed up, cradling her arm. ”Whats wrong with you? You maniac!” She shouted.
Apathy fixed her with a cold stare. ”Its not broken, you’re fine, but if you touch me again I will rip your arm off your body and feed it to my brother,” he told her stiffly, meeting her gaze as he reached a hand over to the poster, tore it off the locker, crumbled it up into a ball, and all while maintaining eye contact with Sharon, he ate it whole.
Swallowing, Apathy looked at her for a moment longer before walking off.
He was probably going to get punished for that later, but he didn’t care.
Walking further down the halls, Apathy paused when he heard his name and sharply turned around to see Cameo approaching.
The slightest itch of a smile threatened to show itself as his friend approached. ”Cameo, it’s nice to see you didn’t die over break,” he greeted, waving back. ”Unless you did and now you’re a ghost, but you don’t look like a ghost,” he continued with a small shrug. Already the tension eased from his shoulders, Cameo was far better than Sharon, Apathy actually enjoyed her company.
”How was your break? You weren’t at the ball, which is for the best, it was not fun, I had to socialize with dukes and duchesses and someone pinched my cheeks, it was dreadful,” he commented, a small exasperated sigh escaping him.

Abraham Aube heir of maraisille american bullfrog/dragon shifter (year 5)
- - Elanaria
TAS, Mfalwen
Abraham had arrived to class early. It was important to be early on days like this, the start of a new semester and his last semester before becoming an aide. Naturally Abraham was fully prepared for his aide years - which would go in depth on how to be a Duke - as he had been preparing for them his entire life. However even still he knew better than to grow lazy simply because he was prepared. Honestly he had probably overstudied, he knew they were to be given their final project in this class, and he had learned from the current aides what it typically was.
Two students had to work together to learn about a specific district and compile a presentation based off of what they found out. It had to be riveting, exciting, educational, and fun. It needed to be the kind of project that did so well people talked about it for months after, because this project was worth too much of their grade to mess up on.
Enoch wasn’t in his class, he had this class at a different time, so Abraham already knew that he wasn’t going to be paired with the prince, however there were other nobility in this class and naturally, those were who Abraham assumed he would end up being paired with.
So you can imagine the kind of shock he had once he was paired with Chidi. Chidi...something, Abraham actually wasn’t sure of a last name there, but what he did know was that Chidi was part of the Boogeymen,
Abraham had studied up on them before, Enoch’s brother was in that group, as was Apathy Kingsleigh - another heir, much like Abraham was - so naturally you would think a group made up of princes would be a group to be respected.
You would be wrong.
The boogeymen were a wild bunch of untamed outcasts. Abraham had heard the stories, and though Enoch had never confirmed them - most likely because Abraham had never asked, since that would’ve been rude - he had never denied them either. That was enough for Abraham to cement his own opinion.
He didn’t know much about Chidi though, he wasn’t one of the big name ones like the others. Enzo was the delinquent prince, Apathy was the weird heir, and Cameo was the cousin of the most popular guy in school. Those were the names he remembered the most, those were the names Abraham paid attention to.
He knew there was another member - possibly two, but that last one was in a way, a cryptid as there had been nothing confirmed on who (or what) it was - however Abraham hadn’t paid too close of attention.
Except now, it would seem he would have to.
Turning to look at this Chidi fellow, Abraham’s dark brown eyes quickly scanned him over, taking into consideration his quill-esque black and white hair and his gruff expression.
Yep, Abraham was right, this here was a troublemaker.
”I know who you are,” Abraham replied curtly, shaking his hand. ”You’re in the boogeymen, correct?” he greeted, brow raised as he brought his hand back. ”I’m Abraham, son of Agamedes and Tansy Aube, heir to Maraisille and close friend of prince Enoch’s,” he introduced himself, though he hardly felt it necessary. Most people knew who the heirs were. ”It seems we’re partners for this.”

Chidi At least Abraham knew how to shake a hand. Chidi couldn't say, however, that the rest of the other boy's greeting was anything warm. At least, not based on the curt tone that his new partner had. His eyes quickly sought out Enzo and the girl he was partnered up with. Enzo was his only friend in the class and Chidi couldn't say that he wasn't a little disappointed that the two hadn't been partnered up.
And it didn't sound like his partnership with Abraham was off to the best start. "Yeah, I'm in the boogeymen," Chidi said, not ashamed of the fact. Enzo was his first true friend and Cameo was his ladybug bro. They were some pretty cool people. "I, uh, don't exactly have a big introduction like you do, but I'm friends with Enzo?" he said, his tone almost coming out as a question as he tried to find something that he and Abraham might have in common. Well, Enzo and Enoch were brothers, so hopefully that would work.
Commonalities were how one made friends, in Chidi's very limited experience. After all, he and Enzo both enjoyed boxing. He and Cameo both had an interest in the critters of his garden. There wasn't much that Chidi could visibly see that he had in common with the seemingly well put together heir, but maybe more would come out if they both loosened up. Abraham seemed a bit tightly wound from the few seconds that Chidi had interacted with and Chidi was just worked up about having to work with someone new. People didn't like the punching porcupine boy for some odd reason.
"Well, uh, where should we start?" Chidi asked. If Abraham was anything like he seemed to be, he would already have the first ten steps of this project planned out.
Now, Chidi was intelligent. It didn't seem so with the rugged bad boy appearance he liked to put on (though many might say that he wasn't very good at that), and it wasn't a fact that Chidi liked to wave around for everyone to see. He didn't want to be seen as a nerd or get mocked for that, so stepping back and letting Abraham tell him what to do would also save Chidi from having to reveal to the other boy that he was - in fact - a big dumb nerd that liked plants and reading and math.
Judging people was bad, they said, but Chidi had already come up with a few adjectives that he thought applied to the other boy; organized, intelligent, probably the type to want to micromanage a project like this. Maybe this would be good for Chidi… even if it wasn’t as fun as it would be for him to be paired up with someone that he liked.
Normally, he would just resign himself to a semester of sticking to the shadows and barely putting anything forward in this class, but the pessimistic porcupine wanted to make a new friend this year - all on his own - and it appeared he found his target. It was his goal - no, his duty - to get through to Abraham over the course of this project.

Abraham Aube heir of maraisille american bullfrog/dragon shifter (year 5)
- - Elanaria
TAS, Mfalwen
Abraham scrunched his nose, looking Chidi over for a moment or so. To him, being friends with Enzo didn’t seem like something to brag about. ”A thrilling introduction,” he deadpanned. ”Where are you from?” he asked after a moment.
Abraham was quite positive Chidi wasn’t from Marsaisille, as Abraham did try to know everyone in the school who was from there, and he honestly doubted he was from Mflawen or Anthropolia. Other ones that seemed unlikely were Breen, Etoile, Lalonalu, Paracosia, Aviog, or Vertefeu.
Though it wasn’t majorly important to find out where he was from, Abraham did like to know, it helped him assess who Chidi might know and if Abraham happened to know any of them as well, boogeymen aside of course.
However Abraham pushed the thought further away when the teacher walked passed and placed a folder on his desk, silently nodding to him before continuing on.
Once the teacher had walked away, Abraham turned his gaze down to the folder, head tipping to the side in curiosity. He expected it to be some basic information on which territory they were supposed to learn about.
Quietly, he opened it up and flicked it open.
Bixbite.
Hmm.
Abraham flipped through the pages of the information giving, which was basically telling them a little bit about the district and what the project was. ”Well, Chidi, it looks like we’ll be studying Bixbite for our project,” he commented, passing the folder over to Chidi for him to get a look at it.
Abraham didn’t know too much about Bixbite, but he knew it was a unique territory that had both an above and underground areas to it. He had been there once or twice with his parents for diplomatic reasons, though he hadn’t really toured the place.
The main thing Abraham remembered about Bixbite were the large, glowing, magical crystals embedded in the walls of the underground cities. It was truly unlike anything Abraham had ever seen, especially considering Maraisille didn’t have anything like that.
Honestly Maraisille was mostly just a giant swamp with various different swamp cities spread across the entire territory. It had its perks and Abraham was a little biased towards it since it had always been his home. People wouldn’t usually take him for the swampy type, but you learned a thing or two when you grew up in a swamp.
He was actually a little curious to find out who had gotten Maraisille for their project, if they needed it, he would be willing to offer some assistance, after all, interviewing the heir of the territory seemed like a good idea-oh that gave him an idea.
”I think we should start by setting up an interview with the Duke and Duchess’s kids, especially the heir, I think Midnight graduated last year so it might be hard to get ahold of her, but she has two younger brothers that are still at the school, Mare and Mur, I’ve spoken to them before, we could start by interviewing them and maybe they can help us interview Midnight and their parents afterwards,” he suggested, already jotting down notes on the best way to proceed.

Jewel Doric nonshifter
Usually this sort of behavior was something Jewel could tolerate. She would be annoyed, but she’d be able to bite her tongue and let it happen since she realized she wouldn’t have to deal with it for too long. Plus the less she said and did in response to somebody’s actions usually had them stop whatever they were doing quicker than they would if they were being acknowledged. Jewel wasn’t good with people, but she realized that negative behaviors were meant to get a reaction, so if they didn’t get a reaction, then they’d put an end to it.
She knew that’s what she needed to do here, she just needed to ignore Enzo, but she had too much at stake here. If anything happened to her soda then she had no idea how she was going to get through the rest of the day.
Though, thinking about it, she might not even have the problem of needing to guard her drink if she hadn’t said anything about it. Now she just had Enzo’s attention on it.
… Curse her impulsive territorial aggression.
Jewel took a deep breath in hopes of calming down any other impulse. Despite not having a shifter form she had found that she still had the instincts of what animals she would have been, and when it came to her soda, she was certainly feeling a lot of territorial aggression that could be blamed more on the part of her brain that was dog.
Never once did she take her gaze off his hand that continued to slide across the top of her desk. If she had a shifter form and happened to be shifted right now, she was certain her fur would be bristling. ”That's right, ground rules,” she muttered, continuing to glare at the prince’s hand. ”They're pretty simple to follow, I haven’t had anybody not understand them. Yet,” she added, voice harsher in that instance. While she wasn’t implying that Enzo was stupid - she had no knowledge of his intelligence level, if anything he was average - but she was implying that she realized his behavior now suggested he’d want to twist her rules or not want to entirely listen. Jewel hoped she could make it clear that she was not one to mess with when it came to her rules on team projects, but if it came down to it, she’d have no problem with putting the prince in his place.
”The basic idea of the rules is pretty much you let me do all the work. I don’t require any assistance, but if you’re worried about a participation grade, I’ll just say you helped and did a great job. It’s worked every time, so you have no need to be concerned.” Jewel didn’t think that was hard to understand. It was easy to get across - she did all the work but would still credit her partner for lending a gracious hand. It was a tactic that had yet to fail, and Jewel was confident in her abilities here that things would go just as smoothly as they always did. So long as Enzo stayed out of her way and let her do the project on her own.
All the while she kept a lookout on Enzo’s hand and where it was placed. She didn’t plan on pulling her gaze away, but then Enzo said something that surprised her.
Jewel blinked slowly, and when she opened her eyes back she looked at the prince’s face, sure that he could see the confusion plastered on her face. ”Read?” What did he mean by that? Had she missed something in the conversation? Jewel didn’t think so, but that statement certainly was odd. ”There wasn’t any reading before class today, I made sure of that…” Jewel trailed off as she mentally went over what she knew of the day’s schedule. There hadn’t been anything about outside reading. ”I mean I did read before class but it...wasn’t anything pertaining to academics, and you’re not exactly going to change my mind on what I read, it was some pretty straightforward stuff, not a lot of wiggle room for out there opinions.” Jewel still had no idea what Enzo had meant, and a part of her was curious to dive deeper into the true meaning behind that comment, but she realized what was actually important here. Right now was the time for class work, nothing else. She had to focus all her attention on the project.
Though, as this conversation continued, it only got weirder, more confusing. What was this guy even going on about? What did he mean by reading? What did he mean by asking why Jewel had been paired with him?
Her head tipped to the side in bewilderment. ”Okay, seriously, what are you talking about? You aren’t making any sense whatsoever. I got paired with you because that’s what the teacher decided?” Her voice raised in pitch at the end, making it come off as more of a question than a statement. Jewel honestly had no idea what the prince was talking about, and the more he went on about odd things, the more she couldn’t help but wonder if his intelligence was actually lower than that of a rock.
But then Enzo did the one thing Jewel did not want him to do. So the only thing she could do was act instinctively.
In one swift motion she harshly swatted at Enzo’s hand, hissing sharply and with enough venom dripping from the sound that it could be assumed she was a snake shifter. ”Get the f— away from my drink.” With one hand she quickly grabbed her soda while the other one was poised and ready to bop him a good one for a second time.
That had been the final straw for Jewel. Even if the prince was hot, he had no right to just grab at her drink like that. If he had played it nice and asked without making a grab for it she probably would have given him the answers to the questions he had asked, but he did the wrong thing and now Jewel was on full defense mode, ready to fight for her drink.

Astrid Ililoxa axolotl and cat shifter
For as much as she tried to calm herself down, Astrid wasn’t doing a very good job at it. She still felt tense, rigid in the muscles and unable to properly move. Usually she was fluid, motion coming easy to her, but after what had just happened with her twin brother, Astrid had too many thoughts in her mind to keep herself steady.
Due to her unsteadiness, it was no surprise that she startled when somebody approached her.
Astrid stumbled back, almost falling back against the nearby wall, but she managed to get a hold of herself just in time before that was to happen. She still cursed silently underneath her breath, knowing that there was no way Barney hadn’t seen that fumble, and while Astrid knew she could do just about anything around Barney and not have any judgement, she didn’t want to look like some sort of weakling around the other girl. Blaine already made her feel weak enough as it was, she didn’t want that feeling to intensify, especially not around the one person she really wanted to impress.
Once the initial awkwardness of having almost fallen was over, Astrid instantly felt another sense of embarrassment coming over her, but this kind was different than the first. Honestly, she wouldn’t even actually call it embarrassment, if anything, it was being nervous. Barney was a calming presence around the catlotl, but at the same time, she made Astrid feel like a total mess. She felt weak in the knees around her, warm in the face, fluttery in the chest. She felt about the same as a toddler trying to learn how to walk, or learning how to talk, always stumbling over her own two feet and faltering over her own words. When those feelings had first started not too long after her first meeting with Barney, Astrid had assumed it was the bitterness she was supposed to feel around any Cipher she came into contact with. She had been so sure that she was simply experiencing an intense wave of innate rivalry, but that hadn’t been it. Sometimes she wished it was that. Feeling angry toward Barney would be so much simpler. But instead, the more she got to know Barney, the more drawn she felt to the other girl. The more attached she became. Barney made Astrid soft. There was no hardness there, and that scared her. What was going to happen if her mom - or even Barney’s mom - found out about their friendship? Astrid’s mom had made it clear that she only expected aggression from her children if they ever had to deal with a Cipher, especially a Cipher-Grimm, but Astrid didn’t have it in her to be that way. Not around Barney.
”Barney, hi!” Astrid practically squeaked out. She once again had to curse toward herself for being a fumbling idiot. She was better than this, she knew that. Maybe she wasn’t as cool and suave as Blaine, but she was still an all powerful being that shouldn’t have a weakness, or at least, her weakness shouldn’t be somebody who was supposed to be her bitter rival to the very end.
The catlotl shook her head and cleared her throat. She needed to calm down, get over herself, act like a normal person. She needed to focus on what was important here. Barney had mentioned something cool, and Astrid couldn’t deny that her curiosity had been piqued.
Astrid looked over at the backpack Barney held up. Usually Astrid would have no interest in somebody’s backpack, but something was clearly in there, or maybe Barney had hexed the thing and now it could do tricks or something. Either way, Astrid was curious. ”You know I do,” she responded, her own mischief expressing itself over her visage now. The worries of getting caught were starting to fade away, and now Astrid was feeling more like her typical self. Whatever sort of mischief was about to go down, Astrid was more than ready for it, and so long as she had Barney by her side, she was sure they could get away with anything.

Cameo Diem "Certainly felt dead over the break, but alas, still alive and breathing," she responded, patting her cheek as casual proof. Though, she supposed that would only be considered proof if ghosts would pass through themselves. With that in mind, it was entirely possible she was a ghost, she missed her own death, and nobody else had noticed.
Shame, for she would have liked to know the way she went out in life.
Was it in a blaze of glory as she rescued a puppy or did she trip and drown in a puddle of mud? With the fact that nobody seemed to have noticed this potential death, she'd lean towards the latter. There simply isn't enough care to those who died in less than spectacular ways.
Overall, she was going to hedge her bets on 'not dead yet.'
Cameo let out a huff as he asked about her break though. "It was hell. There's nothing like coming home to a brief celebration only to be ignored the rest of the time because my parents prefer the company of other adults than their own daughter which in turn leads to their own daughter being forced to spend time with her only cousin."
She let out a much louder groan, waving her arms to emphasize her oncoming point- "I'd rather socialize with dukes and duchesses who wouldn't take much notice of me over spending the day with Faif and his absurd games."
"'Oh let's take a day-trip across the canyon so we can go collect some crystals, sharpen them down, and play a game where you need to dodge them as I throw them at you!'" Cameo mocked aloud, attempting a nasal voice even if Faif wasn't really a nasally person. "'Oh and don't worry! We both know how good of an aim I have!'"
She frowned much harsher now. She hooked her thumb on the left-side collar of her t-shirt and pulled it down so her should was exposed. There was a sharp red line visible on the lower curve of her shoulder, messily stitched together by someone who had enough experience in the matter to keep it together, but not as neat as a hospital visit may have supplied.
"Newsflash, he doesn't have good aim," she continued saying before pulling her shirt back up properly. Couldn't leave an exposed shoulder open for too long in a school after all. "So, much to say, like hell, like usual."
"Despite the whole ball-aspect, divisive opinions we may have on the matter, how was your break previous to that? Hym discover any new cryptids or got any new abductions recently?" she offered back.

Honestly, it sounded like a good deal, he could do this, he had been worried she was going to be one of those partners that insisted on doing everything together, and quite frankly, Enzo wasn’t sure how much of Jewel he could take; based off of first impressions, he seriously doubted they would ever get along.
He was about to tell her he agreed with these terms while pawing at the weird soda bottle on her desk, when he suddenly realized what a grave mistake that was.
As soon as he got close to it, Jewel’s demeanor changed from annoyed and slightly gruff to straight up angry as she swore at him and bopped him with her hand.
...
...Enzo would like to say he was a tough guy, and the bop did nothing to him, however, quite frankly, that would be a straight up lie.
Jewel pushed him with such fierce intensity that he instantly rolled off her desk and landed flat on the ground, however instantly cat instincts kicked in and as he began to fall over, he reached out for anything to hold onto and gripped tightly onto a soft fabric which he would soon realized was Jewel’s sweater.
Unfortunately this realization came a little too late, he had already gripped as tightly to it as possible and fell to the floor, bringing Jewel down with him. Enzo landed on the floor with a thud, Jewel on top of him in a tangled mess of limbs and clothes. He let out a disgruntled huff and tried to get up to his feet, though that was a little hard with Jewel lying on top of him.
Though...as he paused for a moment, he had to admit that over all, this wasn’t too bad....granted it had been a long time since he had had physical contact with someone who wasn’t related to him, but still.
Feeling his face begin to warm and...other things, Enzo reacted in the only way he knew and growled angrily. ”Get off!” he said and pushed her off him, dramatically - and strategically - flopping over onto his stomach, keeping his body smushed against the floor as he puffed his cheeks out and glared at Jewel. ”What’s wrong with you?” he asked. ”You could’ve just told me not to touch it, instead of going all Glitch on me, where’d that strength even come from? You’re like...a nerd,” he continued as he glared at her, hoping she’d assume his red face was from anger and anger alone.
Technically speaking, Enzo could get up now, especially since Jewel was no longer on top of him, however....he uh, he felt like he still needed a minute, hopefully that wouldn’t be too weird to any onlookers - and he was sure there already were onlookers, this didn’t exactly paint him in a good light - and soon he could get back up.
”What’s so special about your soda anyways? It wasn’t like I was gonna drink it, I don’t know what kind of germs you put in there, I was just curious,” he continued stubbornly.
Granted, germs didn’t actually bother him all that much, he had licked his friends before and was only mildly grossed out after learning said friend had recently rolled in squirrel poop, so clearly germs weren’t the big issue here, but that was not the point, the point was that Jewel way overreacted and now they were on the floor and people were staring.
...
Speaking of staring.
Enzo paused once he felt the burning gaze of the teacher tear into the back of his skull.
Cautiously, he glanced up to see the teacher looming disapprovingly above them, arms folded.
Enzo did his best to offer them a shy smile. ”Heyyyy-“ he started.
”What exactly is going on here?” the teacher asked.
Now, at this point, Enzo could probably either admit the truth or be snarky, it wouldn’t matter either way, since he was pretty sure he already knew how this was going to end, and so...
”We got bored up there so we decided to taste test the floor,” he snarked, and all while maintaining eye contact with the teacher, tipped his head down and licked the floor. ”Hmm, not bad, a little metallic though, needs seasoning,” Enzo decided with a shrug.
The teacher looked at him for a moment before sighing and turning away. ”Detention for both of you,” they decided, already heading back to their desk when they paused and looked back to Enzo and Jewel. ”Oh, and Enzo, I hope you plan on taking this project seriously, without a good grade, you won’t graduate,” they warned him.
Enzo winced, scrambling up into a sitting position - now that he finally could - and frowned. ”Wait, what?” He asked in a quiet voice. ”Oh no, oh no, no, no, no, no, no, I can’t be here another year, I need to get out of here,” he said and turned to face Jewel, throwing his original plan out the window. ”So, about those ground rules, I’m not doing any of them, this is too important to me, sorry Jewel, you’re stuck with me until this project is done.”

Eternal Blood Cipher-Grimm rotterman pinscher/unicorn/demon shifter (year 4)
- - Elanaria
TAS, Mfalwen
Barney jingled her backpack, hovering it just below her face as she smirked at Astrid, reaching over to grab her hand. She had already known that Astrid would be interested in whatever it was Barney had to show her. There was a fine line between people she wanted to show off her cool new toy to, and people who would actually like it, lucky for her, Astrid was both.
Grabbing Astrid by the wrist, Barney slung her backpack over her shoulder and gestured with a tip of her head for Astrid to follow. ”Come on, not here, we gotta go somewhere secret,” she explained, smirking a little.
Without another word, Barney headed off, staying out of the way of teachers or other possible intrusions. Technically, she should be in class right now, however history was boring and she already heard enough about it back home.
“When I was your age I joined a cult!” Yeah okay, whatever Dad, no one needed to hear an in depth explanation of that time her father had joined some weird bird cult and dyed his hair black and white. Barney heard plenty about the war and how things had been before the war as it was, there was just no point in going to her history class.
Finally, Barney stopped outside, a little ways away from the actual school buildings. ”We should be good now,” Barney said, calling back to Astrid as she ducked her head down and walked underneath the bleachers, sitting down in a well hidden spot.
Grinning, Barney tore open her backpack - and after gently placing Jerry aside - grabbed the book.
Feeling the course, leather cover, Barney felt a thrill of excitement shiver down her spine. Quietly, she patted the floor next to her, gesturing for Astrid to sit down by her. ”Check this out, I stole it from the palace library, in the restricted section,” she explained as she showed Astrid the book.
Enzo hadn’t been impressed, she needed to share this with someone who would find it as interesting as she did, and while sure, Barney knew her fellow terrorlets - as they were so affectionately called by family - or Bee any of her Cipher cousins would love to get their hands on this book, this wasn’t something she wanted to share with them. As soon as the rest of her family got hold of it, it was no longer just her thing, after that it became their thing, collectively, and Barney just...she wasn’t ready for that.
Besides...Astrid was her friend - even though she could only imagine what her mother would think if she knew - and she was interested in this sort of stuff too, Astrid was...she was special, and quite possibly, the only person Barney felt truly herself with. Not just another Cipher or a Grimm, around Astrid she could simply be...Barney.
”Its full of forbidden spells and potions, I haven’t looked it over too closely yet though,” Barney admitted as she scooted a little closer to Astrid. ”I thought we could look it over together,” she admitted, casting a small glance towards Astrid, a smile tightly pulling at the corner of her lips as she watched the other girl.

Apathy Kingsleigh heir of hym common crow/golden retriever shifter (year 5)
- - Elanaria
TAS, Mfalwen
Apathy let out a low hum as he examined her injury. ”Hm, yes, his aim is terrible, if he was aiming to miss you, he clearly...missed the miss, however if he was aiming to kill you, his aim was way off, he should’ve gone for your neck, the neck is a great place to kill someone because it’s so fragile, you can snap someone’s neck, hang them, stab it, cut it off, choke them, step on them, crush it, there’s honestly so many ways to kill someone through their neck,” Apathy explained with a vague hand gesture. ”How sharp were the crystals? This cut is rather ridged, clearly not a clean cut, Faif does not understand what he’s doing,” Apathy decided with a small shake of his head.
Apathy stayed there for a minute or so longer, simply looking at Cameo before it dawned upon him that he should probably not talk about the better ways her cousin could’ve killed her. ”...If he had killed you though, I could’ve returned the favor, I know a lot of great places to hide a body in Hym, or maybe I’d even just feed his body to Bigfoot, she’d like that.” That...that wasn’t much better was it?
”...Well, anyway, it’s a good thing you aren’t dead or else I’d have made this for nothing,” he commented.
...
Okay so maybe he just wasn’t good with words, luckily though, Apathy had found a group of friends who seemed to know what he meant, it was part of the reason he felt so comfortable around them, and why, in the events he took over the world one day, they would be saved.
So, reaching into his backpack, he pulled out the headband he had made for Cameo. This one looked much more like alien antennas than Enzo’s did, which was a good thing. ”Yours don’t look like demon horns...that would be interesting though, perhaps one day I’ll make demon horn headbands.” Would that be offensive to the students who were part demon?
...Apathy wasn’t sure, but that was probably something he could ask at some point.
He paused for a moment though, once Cameo asked about his break, sans the whole ball thing. ”No new cryptids, however we did discover a bug we thought was extinct, Halloween ate it though, so I guess it is extinct now,” he said, shrugging apathetically. It had been cool to find a new bug, but it wasn’t like it was world devastating news to have his brother eat it.
Besides, boy’s gotta eat, better a bug than a person’s arm, like that one time.
”I wish he had at least offered to share, I’ve always wanted to eat something previously thought to be extinct,” Apathy admitted, head tipped lightly to the side. ”One day, I want to eat a dinosaur.”
Now that would be cool.
One day, Apathy would say he had eaten a dinosaur and it would be the crowning moment of his entire existence.
