Morningpaw shuddered at Frostpaws response, but of course she was right. It would be too risky to meet every full moon, especially with Azrael, who knows what the she-cat had in plan for the others once they left. As for father, he was going to be heartbroken, if he already wasn’t. “I think you two should go see him, he’s going to fight so hard for you two to stay.” She mewed with hurt in her voice, she never saw anything like this coming. Her siblings and father were always so happy, if only things could stay the same forever.. Morningpaw leaned on Aspenpaw, putting her head close to his.
Duskpaw looked away from them, trying to hide the fact he felt like he was forcing himself to go. For the sake of who? Mother? Who has maybe shared a mouse with him, and now Frostpaw was feeling forced to go too. He couldn’t even look at her, how could I do this? “I’m sorry, it’s my fault for deciding to go.” He admitted and felt shame cloud his judgement. Now he had to go tell his father, who was going to try everything to make them stay home.

Aspenpaw leaned into his sister as she spoke, watching his two siblings. He looked to his paws and nodded, aware that his idea had just been wishful thinking. He glanced to Morningpaw then to Frostpaw and Duskpaw. “We can help keep the others away. I’m sure that they will try to stop you.” He told them with a nod. “We can meet at the stones to the mainland to say goodbye.” He looked to Morningpaw for her approval before he stepped forward, nuzzling his two siblings. “I’ll go get Redpaw to help.” He slipped out of the den without another word, feeling empty inside. This is the very least he could do for them before they leave. “Redpaw, I need you to go distract Oakpelt and Moonstar. Duskpaw and Frostpaw want to say goodbye to Father before they leave.” He didn’t provide anymore details, hoping that his friend will agree without question. Glanced towards the far end of the camp, just yesterday they were all playing hide and go seek, and now his family will be separated forever. “I’m going to go find Silvermist.” The dark tabby padded off, following his father’s scent.
Frostpaw watched Aspenpaw as he left, then looked back to Morningpaw. “Maybe, it wasn’t the full prophecy.” She told her sister with a thoughtful tone. “I could be that this is how it has to be for everything else to take place.” The she-cat stood, her expression serious. “Do you think you would be able to get us some herbs for travelling?” She asked her sister, not wanting to say goodbye, not yet. She had told Azreal that they would decide for sun high, so there was still time to prepare. The pale cat did feel guilty about asking but she was sure her sister would understand. She wasn’t sure what could happen once they leave the clan territory, so she wanted to be as prepared as possible. “I’m sorry for asking so much from you.”
Eventually, Aspenpaw found his father at the furthest reaches of the camp, the tom looked like a hollowed version of himself, his usual, brilliant blue eyes now dull. “Aspenpaw, I suppose you know.” He said quietly when he noticed his son. The silver tom stood and pressed himself into the dark apprentice, as if he was scared that he would also leave. “I’m so sorry. I wasn’t enough to keep you all together.” After several moments, Aspenpaw broke the silence.
“Did you tell Moonstar?” He asked, worried that their leader was already aware of the situation.
“I have to gather myself first.” The tom explained, aware of how he appeared. He was unaware that Azreal had taken the opportunity to convince his kits fully. His hopeful voice made Aspenpaw shudder with guilt, he only now realized how pure and innocent his father truly was.
Aspenpaw pulled away from his father, giving the tom a nudge of affection before he spoke. “I-I think you should come talk to all of us, in the apprentice den.” He closed his eyes for a moment to shield himself from the worried expression painted on his father’s face.
The silver cat stared at his son for a moment, then nodded, his expression unreadable as he spoke. “Okay, let’s go then.” He mewed, allowing his son to lead the way to the rest of his kits, his heart aching a little more with each step. He loved his kits, and that love had grown in such a way that he could read them relatively easily. He knew that there was something wrong, Aspenpaw’s eyes had told Silvermist everything. Despite this, there was still a shred of hope deep in Silvermist’s heart that his kits would not leave his side.

Redpaw nodded to Aspenpaw, “of course,” he mewed quietly. He was his best friend but he was still sort of close with the others, it was sad for them to be leaving.
Morningpaw let out a small laugh at Frostpaw, “of course. It’s not the end, you’re going to go out there and live the life that’s for you. I’ll miss you both so much, please don’t forget us…” she mewed with tears forming in her eyes, she couldn’t say goodbye to them. Suddenly Aspenpaw and Silvermkst entered the den, and her heart sunk even more. The hurt in Silvermists face hurt more than anything in the world to her, she wanted to speak but her throat tightened as she held back her tears.
Duskpaw took a long sigh before answering Morningpaw, how could he forget them? “I could never forget you guys, I’ll miss you.” He mewed shakily and kept his head down once Silvermist entered the den, it was easy to tell his siblings but how could he tell his father? The one who has done everything for them to have a safe home and loving family, I’m going to tear his heart apart. He gave Frostpaw the side eye, hoping she had come up with something to say to their father. He couldn’t even form a sentence her could say, all he wanted to do was cry, but he had to be strong for his family. How am I strong if I can’t even look my father in the eyes?

Frostpaw nodded with Duskpaw’s words, giving her sister a warm gaze, she could never forget her family. She hoped one day they will be together again. Maybe StarClan has something planned for them that they have not yet discovered. She closed her eyes for a moment, why else would her brother be so drawn to the idea of leaving the clan that they have always lived in. She shook her head, maybe it was just like how she was, feeling guilty and obligated. She glanced up as Aspenpaw lead their father into the den. “Father, I’m sorry.” She mewed when Duskpaw said nothing.
Silvermist looked at his kits and shook his head, emotions flossing his eyes. “No.” He said sternly, taking a step into the den. “Absolutely not, you two are staying here.”
Aspenpaw was caught off guard by his father’s tone, he rarely ever seen him this angry. The dark cat looked to his siblings then back to Silvermist, unsure on what to say.
Frostpaw also fell silent, she went to open her mouth but she closed it again, unsure on what to say. She looked down to her paws, she felt foolish, why had they expected Silvermist to just go along with this plan? She looked to her brother, wanting to see if he had any idea on what to say.
Silvermist felt guilt when he saw the expressions of his kits, he sat down and signed. “You two are clan cats, even if your mother isn’t. I don’t want her to leave either, but you two...I can’t let you go. I won’t allow it.”

Duskpaw held the silence and watched his fathers face, trying to come come up with something to say to make him feel better. But he knew no matter what he said he was going to be angry. All of the kits exchanged glances, Aspenpaws and Morningpaws face filled with sadness, and Frostpaw eyeballing him to explain to Silvermist. “Father I-“ he choked on his words but tried to straighten himself out, “I’m sorry. I just feel like Azrael shouldn’t go alone.” He finally confessed, or was he convincing himself that was the reason?
Morningpaw stayed quiet as Silvermist and Duskpaw spoke, not only was it not her place to speak but she had no more words. She was worried about her siblings and her father, always wanting to make sure everyone was okay. But nobody was okay, would they ever be okay again? They promised to never forget each other, but what is Duskpaw and Frostpaw do? What if they don't want to ever come back?

Silvermist watched Duskpaw closely as the kit explained, seeming to not be moved by his words. “That’s not your responsibility. Once you leave the clan, you can’t come back.” Silvermist told his son, quickly looking to Frostpaw as well to make sure she was paying attention to his words. “You lose a warm place to sleep, your friends and family and a safe place to raise your family.” He added, his ears pressing back with each word. He thought back to how skinny and depressed she had seemed. He narrowed his eyes, wondering what was the cause of her wanting to leave the clan, and take his kits with her....was it a punishment for him refusing to be with her? Or was it something else. Silvermist looked back to all of his kits, his perfect, wonderful kits and once again shook his head. “No. You’re not to step a paw out of this den until I’ve talked to Moonstar. I’m not going to allow you to go out and ruin your lives.”

Azreal overhead Silvermists voice in the apprentices den and quickly entered to see him and all of their kits. The look on Silvermists face told her that he was not happy about what they have told him, “what’s wrong? They must’ve told you I’m leaving. I already told you that?” She questioned the tom, who was now glaring at her with his ears back. Lashing her tail she kept his gaze, waiting for his response, maybe the kits had decided to go with her.
Moonstar has been watching Azreal from the branch she usually sits on, and noticed the she-cat go into the apprentice den. Something felt off. She jumped down from the branch and casually padded over to the apprentice den but suddenly kept hearing a cat yelling her name.
“Moonstar! Moonstar!” Redpaw called once he saw her going towards the apprentice den. Running over to her he acted out of breath, trying to catch his breath to kill time. “So do you want to see me jump off the big willow tree?” He said and began twirling in circles in front of her.
Moonstar watched the apprentice ridiculously twirl in circles, “I suppose.” She mewed and followed him over to the willow tree to watch him commit to his strange trick.

Silvermist turned quickly when he heard his former mate's voice, his ears flat. He had to focus to prevent himself from baring his fangs at her. "What did you say to them?" He asked, using all of his might to keep his tone respectful. Of course she had to show up now of all times. He shifted his body to hide his kits from her gaze, he gave the she-cat a stern look as they spoke. He felt anger flood him, but he refrained from saying anything else for the sake of his kits, he could feel them watch him with nervous gazes.
Frostpaw leaned into Duskpaw as she watched her parents. Azreal had come in at the worst time, her father seemed more aggressive than she had ever seen him. She looked to Morningpaw and nodded her head, indicating for the she-0cat to come over to them. She did not want their last moments together to be them a part. "I'm sorry." She whispered to her sister, though part of it was for her father as well. She couldn't help but think they were making a mistake, but she knew that Duskpaw was sure in what he wanted.
Aspenpaw attempted to stand between his parents, he leaned into his father's silver pelt, hoping to help calm the tom down. He couldn't help but look out to the clearing, nervous that his clanmates would hear the fighting. He glanced back into the den to his siblings, unsure on what to do. He relaxed slightly when he felt his father lean back into him, a deep breath causing the silver cat's shoulders and rise and fall slowly.
"Azreal." Silvermist said calmly, a stern tone still remaining in his voice, his blue eyes focused on the she-cat, "I think it is time for you to leave."

Morningpaw was surprised at her fathers anger, it’s like how she had felt earlier when Azreal first told her. She pushed herself against Frostpaw, “I’m sorry, I love you. I will find you one day.” She felt tears coming, but held them back. This was not going to end pretty, her father was going to be a mess. Why was Azreal this way? Does she just go around ripping families apart? “What did she say to y-“ she was interrupted by Silvermist.
Azreal paused at Silvermists words, “okay.” She mewed effortlessly and walked out of the den, looking to see if any of the cats had heard Silvermists outburst. No cat seemed to look at her besides Redpaw, who seemed to be showing off to Moonstar, or something. Would the kits come? She was sure she had convinced them, regardless she was leaving and made her way out of the camp.
Duskpaw watched Azreal leave the den and he quickly stood up, “I love you all.” He mewed before darting past Silvermist and his siblings, feeling his heart skipping beats as he ran out of the camp passed Azreal. He couldn’t believe he had just ran from his family to be with his mother, what have I done? He looked back towards the camp, feeling his chest ache with grief.
Redpaw watched Azreal leave the den and not too long after Duskpaw running after her, his mouth dropped with surprise. Moonstar watched the apprentices expression change and looked behind her to see Duskpaw run out of the camp, oh no.

Silvermist attempted to grab his son when he raced past him, but was stopped by Aspenpaw. "Duskpaw, don't go!" He screamed after his son, panic in his voice. The silver tom attempted to shake off Aspenpaw's grasp but paused when he say Frostpaw race forward as well. He stared at the two kits with wide blue eyes.
Frostpaw raced after her brother, caught off guard when he darted. She heard her father's pleads and stopped, looking back at him. She stared at him for a moment. "I promise, I'll bring him back one day." She told him, her voice cracking. This wasn't how it was suppose to happen. They were all suppose to walk together to the stone path and say their farewells there. He could hear Duskpaw's paw steps growing more distant, her heart sinking with each step. "I can't let him go out there by himself. I have to protect him." She told her father. She padded over to him a nuzzled him, she felt his body seem to collapse at her touch, she never knew her father could be so fragile. She gave her siblings a nodded farewell. "We love you all." She stated before racing after Duskpaw, her figure becoming a distant shadow in the blue horizon.
Silvermist leaned against his son in defeat, watching his two children disappear before his eyes. When Aspenpaw's grip lessened on his pelt, he raced forward, calling for his kits. He begged and pleaded for them to stop. "Don't leave, please!" He called, making it to the stones. The tom could see the cats in the distance, their figures dots. He rushed forward to catch up, but mis-stepped, falling into the waters below. He looked around at the blue and white waters around him, two fish darted past him, disappearing into the vast blue in front of him. The tom watched as bubbled rose to the surface, he couldn't die, not now. He used all his strength to push his body up to the surface, taking a deep inhale as he gripped onto the stones as he attempted to pull himself back up. He quickly looked around for Duskpaw and Frostpaw, but their figures were now gone.

Guilt tugged at Duskpaw as he ran from his father, I love him so much. One day everything will make sense, we will be together and this will all be a distant memory. He felt the wind in his fur as he ran, feeling more free than he ever has.
Morningpaw chased after her father trying to make sure he was okay, but then he suddenly slipped on the rocks and fell into the water. “Father!” She yelled and helped him back onto the stone, she watched him helplessly look for Duskpaw and Frostpaw. Feeling so much guilt she started to lick his pelt, “I’m so sorry.” She mewed with hurt in her tone, feeling so much grief for him. It was hard enough losing two of her siblings but seeing her father this broken hurt much more. They stood there looking into the distance where the others ran to, no longer able to see their bodies. But they still watched helplessly, as if they would turn around and run back, but it wouldn’t happen. Morningpaw began to cry at the thought of not knowing when she would see them again, what if something happened to them? Should she have run after them forever? She laid down on the wet rocks, letting water hit her pelt as she had finally been defeated.

Frostpaw didn’t look back as she caught up to her brother, staying close to him as they stepped on to the mainland. She looked to her brother as they walked to see if he was having second thoughts, she was sure he was steadfast in his choice though. She glanced around, this had been the same area that she had hunted in just yesterday with Moonstar. She couldn’t help but wonder if the leader knew of what happened, and if she was sending a patrol after them. Without a word, she looked to her mother, waiting to see if she had a location in mind.
Silvermist sprawled onto the stone once he was able to climb onto its cool surface. His body shivered from the cold water that soaked his pelt. He released a mournful yowl as he cried, finding himself unable to stand, he felt so weak. He almost didn’t notice as Aspenpaw rushed over and began to lick his coat in an attempt to dry him off.
Aspenpaw looked to his sister as he tried to warm up his father, he then looked out to the mainland. Why did Azreal do that? She forced Duskpaw and Frostpaw to make their choice right then. He recalled that Frostpaw had stated that they were to tell her their choice at sun high, they might have still been time to talk them out of it. He wanted to feel enraged, but sadness flooded him instead,. The tom pressed himself into his father and began to join him in his sorrowful cry.

/few month skip lol./
Morningpaw exited the medicine den and looked up to the sky, it was a bit past sun high. She focused her eyes on finding her brother and father since she had worked extra hard to finish her tasks a bit early. It had been a few moons since Duskpaw and Frostpaw left and there was an obvious hole in their family. It has made the three a lot closer though, clinging onto each other in this rough time as they grieve those who are alive but gone. Noticing Aspenpaw near the with willow tree with Redpaw she trotted over to them, “hey! Where’s father?” She asked the tom and gave him a lick on his muzzle.
Duskpaw trotted down the alleyway towards where he, Frostpaw and his mother now lived. How surprised he was to meet Foxspots, as far as he knew he was deadbeat father and terrible mate. He held prey in his mouth and dropped it in a corner, or fresh kill pile? He picked up a mouse and set it in front of her mother, who had made him feel bad for wanting a break from hunting. He turned and walked away before she could say a word, one thing that didn’t need to change was his relationship with her. Maybe he had made a mistake coming along with her, but now it was too late. The clan wouldn’t take him and Frostpaw back after practically running away without saying goodbye. The guilt was eating him alive at this point, he was barely able to eat or look at Azreal. Everything’s her fault. He walked passed Frostpaw and shot an irritated look at her, “does Azreal do anything?” Duskpaw grumbled and sat next to her.

Aspenpaw looked away from Redpaw and towards his sister. “Good morning.” He said with a tired voice, then he used his nose to point towards the camp entrance. “He’s waiting for them on the stone path again, I made sure he ate this morning though.” Aspenpaw told the silver she-cat. He paused for a moment before he spoke again. “Are you okay?” He asked, sitting down as he spoke. He felt like nothing had been right since their siblings left. No more gathering to eat together in the morning, hunting together, sharing tongues before they all retire to the den after a hard day of training. The apprentice den felt empty without his siblings there, now he and Redpaw slept almost on top of each other to make it feel like it was as crowded as it had been just a few days ago.
Frostpaw didn’t look at Duskpaw as he spoke, too busy keeping an eye out for any hidden dangers. “She said she was guarding our nests.” She told the black cat with a fly tons, she too was growing irritated, though unlike Duskpaw, she was quick to say no to their mother when the she-cat would plead and beg for things she could do herself. “Stop hunting for her, she can do it herself.” She told her brother, ignoring the sound of the monster that just ran past the alley as she spoke. She had been terrified of them at first, but now they were just background noise. The alley they were in was too small for the creature to fit inside and the thunderpaths were crossable by underground tunnels. She looked to her brother after a moment. “This isn’t the clan, just hunt for what you need to eat. They don’t hunt, they don’t eat.”

Morningpaw shrugged and looked towards the stone path, “as long as have you and father I’ll be okay. And you Redpaw.” She added sweetly to the tom, he has been comforting them ever since their siblings left. She brushed her pelt against Aspenpaw, “I’m going to go talk to him.” She mewed referring to her father, and began padding over to him. As she approached the stone path she found his looked out towards where they ran off to. She took a took breath before pressing herself against him and sat with him. “How are you doing?” She asked, but she spines the answer. He was hurt and probably felt betrayed, if Azreal had really loved him she would’ve never done this.
Duskpaw sighed and shook his head, “I know, she just always has to guilt trip me.” He mewed referring to her previously begging for them to hunt since they are trained hunters, pathetic. Speaking of the use,was she-cat she walked up beside them.
“Hello my kits.” Azreal mewed sweetly and sat near them, “thank you for the food Duskpaw.” She praised the young tom, “coming to think of it. Don’t you think two think it’s time to drop your clan names?” She suggested and shrugged her shoulders.

Silvermist didn’t look back as his daughter approached, eyes still on the mainland that sprawled across the horizon. “I’m fine, thank you, my dear.” He told her, sounding almost breathless as his blue eyes searched for any sign of movement. “Are you doing well in your training?” The cat asked, his tone not nearly as bright and cheery as it once was. The cat felt defeated, though he was thankful to have Morningpaw and Aspenpaw with him still. He was determined to not let anymore of his kits go. He still had to try to be the best father that he could, even if he felt like he had failed them. He noted that Redpaw must also feel neglected, he hadn’t mentored the poor apprentice since Duskpaw and Frostpaw had left.
Frostpaw looked at her mother flatly. She now realized why the she-cat has wanted them with her, but she was unsure if her brother knew. It seemed like everytime the two siblings got a chance to chat, Azreal would rush over and interrupt. It was probably to stop them from deciding to return home. “No, we’re clan-born.” She told her mother with an unbothered tone. She met the she-cats gaze as she leaned into her brother. Duskpaw was more sensitive than she was, so she had to make sure that any choices he made weren’t out of guilt from Azreal.

Morningpaw laid her head on Silvermists shoulder, “training is good. Owlwing hasn’t had me do too much, I think he feels bad.” She said to him as she watched the water hit the rocks. “I just want you to be okay.” She mewed guiltily, wishing she could take his hurt away. What could make this all better? There was nothing, the only thing that would fix this is if they came back. But they weren’t going to come back, she knew they weren’t.
Duskpaw rolled his eyes at Azreal, “oh please, we don’t need to hide ourselves unlike you.” He spat, feeling a bit of pleasure from finally snapping off at her. He looked over to Frostpaw and pretended their mother wasn’t there, “let’s get out of here for a bit.” He mewed before standing up trying to urge Frostpaw to come with him.
Azreal put her ears back at her kits reaction, I deserved that. she realized how cold the two have become, has she really already made them this way? If more time goes by how will they be then? She just couldn’t let them go from her grip, and she’d be fine.

Silvermist gave his daughter and affectionate nudge with his nose before looking back to the mainland, nodding as she spoke. Owlwing has been giving him herbs since the kits left, saying they will make his grieving process easier. He didn’t need to grieve, he just needed his kits back. “I’ll be fine as soon as they come home.” He told his daughter. He had been angry with his two kits at first, they should have told him instead of trying to simply make him say goodbye to Frostpaw and Duskpaw. That anger had since shifted into disappointment in both them and himself. So many things could have been different.
Frostpaw nodded and followed her brother, paying no mind to their mother as she walked. She made sure to walk with confidence but kept a close eye on any shadows or corners that could be hiding dangers. The biggest threat they had experienced so far were other cats, most of them attacked without warning but usually the two former clan cats would subdue them with ease. She remembered the area that had many twoleg half-bridges. It was filled with mice and fish but cats and rats caused them to move on. She shuddered as she remembered the rat, disgusting creatures that would swarm anything that seemed weak. They had been lucky to have avoided them so far. She wished she knew more about herbs, it would have been helpful to keep her and her brother safe. Her pale eyes landed on the dark cat, silently asking where he was planning to go.

Morningpaw let out a long sigh at her fathers comment, what if they never come back? She stayed silent for a few moments, thinking back to what her and Owlwing have talked about since they left. He had helped her make sense of Azreal and why she would do such a thing, and also how she convinced the kits to so easily go with her. It was too difficult to talk to Silvermist about it yet, he wouldn’t understand. Or maybe he would, he was Azreals mate as one point. “I’m sorry,” is all she could get out to him, she knew he was going to wait here everyday until they came back. But they’re never coming back.
Duskpaw walked besides Frostpaw and signaled her to take a left turn as they reached the sidewalk, “let’s go to the forest.” He suggested since they haven’t been to the forest since their journey to the two leg town. As they trotted side by side Duskpaw worked up the nerve to talk to Frostpaw, so much guilt had been hanging over him since that moment he ran after Azreal and left his family. “I have to tell you I’m sorry,” he mewed shamefully with his head down, “that was our home, a-and I made us leave.” He shook his head at himself, regretting every decision he had made in those few moons. “What makes us believe they wouldn’t let us come back?” Duskpaw asked, finally with some hope in voice.

Silvermist simply nodded, staying quiet for a long time. “Make sure you don’t neglect your training.” He finally told her, his eyes not shifting as he spoke. He didn’t want his kits to fall behind because of him. They needed to take the time to gain the skills needed to be successful in the future. Eventually, he did glance at her, taking a moment to examine her expression, she looked so much like he did when he was younger, something he had never noticed before. “I want you to be able to live your life happily, I want that for all of you.” He eventually added, wanting to make sure she knew how much he loved her and all of her siblings. Despite his sadness, he would never regret having them in his life.
Frostpaw looked at her brother as he spoke, staying quiet. She thought for a moment before nodding to her brother’s idea, she missed the feeling of dirt and grass under her paws. The pale cat looked ahead of them as she spoke, ready for any trouble that may come their way as they walked. “Well, it’s been several moons.” She told him, wondering if her family had moved on yet. “Also, I don’t think Azreal would let us leave without making it difficult. You’re too nice to her and let her play with your emotions. You need to be more firm on what you want.” She added, she would admit that it was interesting to learn about their roots, and she had learn a lot by observing the other cats that had live here for a long time. She found out that monsters will often indicate which way they want to go, twoleg would give you food if you acted cute, and that the shiny tall stones often contained food, some of it was okay but nothing was better than a fresh mouse. All the prey here tasted off, but could also be poisonous if one was not careful. A mouse acting odd was not prey to be hunted, any cats that did eat one often died a few days later.

Morningpaw listened to her fathers words, hearing nothing but sadness in his tone. She had to find a way to help him get back to his normal self, this couldn’t be good for him. “Of course father..” she trailed off, silently wishing her siblings would walk through the trees just like her father. But they couldn’t sit and wait forever, “let’s go on a walk.” She suggested to the tom and slightly nudged him to go forward. Somehow her and Aspenpaw had to help him get over this, what if they really don’t come back? Silvermist couldn’t be left with the hurt forever waiting for them to return. Morningpaw loved him so much, and wanted nothing in the world but for him to be a little bit happy again.
Duskpaw lashed his tail at Frostpaws words, trying to ignore the fact that she was right. “Whatever, I could leave her right now and never look back.” He snapped at her, but a few moments later regretting it. Why did he have to carry so much shame? He looked at her with guilt, “I’m sorry.. she’s just making me so angry.” He confessed to the she-cat, who also seemed irritated with Azreal. How could she not be? That cat was turning them into heartless scavengers, this isn’t who we are. He barely flinched at the monster that drove by, but the smell of it made his nose wrinkle. “I hate it here, we belong in the forest. Or the island. Anywhere but here.” Duskpaw mewed defeatedly, he never said a proper goodbye to Silvermist, and it was eating him alive everyday. He couldn’t eat a meal, or hunt, or do a single thing without thinking about him.

Silvermist slowly stood up, his eyes still remaining on the distant tree line. "Okay" he mewed in agreement, resisting the urge to refuse. What is he missed Frostpaw and Duskpaw when they returned? He pushed away the thought, he had one of his kits right in front of him, he couldn't ignore her because of what if's. He began to walk, following her lead, trying to think of what to say. "Briarshine will be having her kits any day now." He stated, looking ahead as he spoke. "Will you be helping with the kitting?" He asked. Normally he was so involved in his kit's lives, but now he struggled to speak with them. He felt guilt, what if he caused his remaining kits to distance themselves because of his actions. He thought back to Duskpaw and Frostpaw, had he been attentive to their needs as well? He thought that he and Duskpaw had a good relationship, but the black tom seemed so determined to go with his mother. He felt his stomach drop, anxiety flowing through his veins.
Frostpaw shook her head when her brother apologized, not offended by his response. He was frustrated and felt guilty, she could tell every time he looked at her. "It's fine." She told him, unbothered by the monster that passed. Duskpaw had always been reactive and passionate. She could remember him pulling pranks when they were kits, and her having to stop him and Aspenpaw from fighting when Aspenpaw would get upset. Azreal would do nothing, maybe telling them to go outside, even when it was cold out so that she could sleep in peace. Frostpaw felt her eyes narrow, she and morningpaw would always have to mother their brothers, all because Azreal had been too lazy to do it. "What made you want to go with her in the first place?" she asked, wanting to know if motive. She suspected it was because he felt obligated, and had been craving Azreal's attention. He had finally gotten it, but at the cost of their clan life. "Make sure you stay quiet, I wouldn't be surprised if she is following us." She added in a whisper, not looking back. Azreal always seemed to try to prevent them from being alone, she suspected it was because Duskpaw would falter to her honeyed words easily if Frostpaw wasn't around. Though she had no way of truly knowing if that was the case.

Morningpaw padded close to Silvermist as they walked, “I will be, Owlwing said it would be great experience.” She mewed confidently, it had felt like so long since Silvermist has been interested in what’s going on with her. She didn’t blame him, it was hard on him to lose his kits to someone undeserving. Maybe if he talked about it he would feel better, but she always pushes that thought away. He might get more upset and Morningpaw was trying to make things better, not worse. As the were approaching the trees a small mouse caught her eye, she looked at Silvermist with a smirk, “want to see a medicine cat try to hunt?” But Morningpaw took off towards the mouse before the tom could answer, she pounced on the mouse and caught it with her claws, but it escaped her grip. She watched as it ran a way and glanced at Silvermist expecting some sort of reaction, “looks like I’m only good at being a medicine cat,” she forced a small giggle while she stared at him.
Duskpaw felt his legs get weak when Frostpaw questioned him, it was the same question he asked himself everyday. He knew she was eventually going to ask, but he still didn’t understand why. “I guess it’s because it’s the first time she ever wanted me. But she just wants to use me..” his throat felt tightened as he tried to talk, feeling so much regret with every word he spoke. He just wanted to feel like him old self, he hadn’t felt true happiness since the last time him and siblings had played. Everyday was dull, the honking from the monsters woke him up in a scare, and the food always tasted rotten. But at the end of each day all he wants is his father, but he had to be a disappointment in his eyes by now. “I just want father, he probably thinks I hate him.” Duskpaw quietly cried out, everyday got worse, not better. It has to get better than this.

Silvermist watched, his gaze was dull but attentive, he gave her a weak smile when she laughed. "I'll show you how to hunt one day, it's a good skill to have." He told Morningpaw with a nod, watching the mouse disappear. He shifted, knowing that his daughter had probably hoped for a better reaction. He felt like he was a diluted version of himself, which made him feel the need to run and hide in shame. He thought for a moment before looking to Morningpaw again. "Did you know that Owlwing was originally training to be a warrior? I'm surprised that he never decided to teach you...He probably would be too worried that his skills are rusty." He mewed, tilting his head, he went on to explain further. "He wanted to be a medicine cat since he learned what it was, and would constantly try to follow Dawnflower, our old medicine cat, into her den, even as a kit." The silver tom released a small laugh at the memory. "He would get in trouble all of the time, I would help distract your grandmother so that he could sneak out and "Help the clan". Of course, he wouldn't get half-way across the clearing before he got caught." Silvermist sat down as he thought more about his past, how it was to grow up surrounded by his friends and family, he pondered if Frostpaw and Duskpaw had made any friends yet. "It was just us in the den, Briarshine was already an apprentice, she used to get so mad at us because she would have to follow us around to keep us out of trouble. Anyways, after bugging Dawnflower for moons, she eventually gave up and mentored Owlwing. It was a good thing too, she ended up passing soon after he got his name. I wonder if he had gotten a vision that warned him of that...He wouldn't tell me even if I asked. Silvermist then gave his daughter an apologetic look. "I'm sorry, I'm sure you would go to the elder's den if you wanted to hear some old stories."
Frostpaw gave her brother a concerned look, she hated to see him like this. Carefully, as to not make him jump, she gave his should a nudge. "Don't worry Duskpaw, I'll always be there for you." She told him, wanting to ease his worries. Her ear twitched when he mentioned Silvermist, her thoughts going back to the day they left, his voice calling for them, filled with grief and panic. He seemed so weak and fragile, it made her heart sink to think of it. She shook her head, pausing her steps for a moment to speak. "He knows you don't. I'm sure he's worried, not angry." She told Duskpaw firmly, she knew her father always saw the best in everyone, especially his kits. "We could try to see him at the next gathering. Aspenpaw and Morningpaw may be getting their names soon, it would be nice to congratulate them." She suggested quietly, as to not have prying ears hear her words as she continued to walk. She knew it would be difficult to see them, but cats tended to let their guard down at gatherings, so it would be easy to sneak close enough to watch from a distance. There would be so many scents from all the different cats that even the stench of the twoleg place would be well hidden as long as they rolled in rosemary or lavender before hand. "There is a lavender patch just into the border of Islet clan, on the mainland portion of the territory. We could roll in that before we go. But it would be best to plan this more later. I'd rather focus more on hunting." She told him, it would be a while until the next gathering anyways, so they did not have to be concerned about such things now.

Morningpaw sat and listened to her father speak, enjoying the slight happiness in his voice. “Don’t be sorry, I miss your voice.” She mewed and gave him a hopeful smile, he deserved much more than he has been dealt. She wasn’t one for revenge, but Azreal deserved every terrible thing that happens to her out there. Too much had happened in the past moons, and trying to talk to her father got harder and harder. At some point she was going to have to find her voice and speak to him, maybe that day was today. No it’s not. Morningpaw stood up and looked at Silvermist almost at eye level, she was now barely his size. “I love your stories, don’t ever stop telling them to me.” She rubbed her pelt against his and let out a purr.
Duskpaw listened closely to Frostpaw as she spoke, they have now reached the grass and were leaving the two leg town. The trees beginning to cover them as they walked side by side, “I want to believe you, but I left with his ex mate that never did a thing for us. If he isn’t angry with me, then he has to feel betrayed.” The guilt stabbing at his heart each time he talked about him, “I guess that could work. But what’s the point of seeing them without talking to them?” He said and shook his head with frustration, there had to be something they could do to see them again. What if they didn’t recognize them? They probably stunk of monsters and rotten prey, and that was also his fault. Duskpaw was distracted from his thoughts by the trees and the fresh breeze through his long fur that he hadn’t felt in moons. He took in a deep breath and smiled, “why can’t we just stay here?” He began to chase after a bug like a kit, batting at it while it was in the air.

Silvermist gave her another smile, air escaping his nose in a quiet, awkward laugh. He missed her and Aspenpaw as well, but he knew he had to right to complain. They would quietly cling to eachother but there was a growing distance between emotionally, Silvermist was aware of it but unsure on how to prevent the drift. Everyday he felt the urge to stand at the stone path as watch the distant tree line waiting to see his two kits rushing out of the forest and to him. However, after so many moons, there hadn't been a single sign of them. The patrols never found any traces of their scent, and whenever he asked the warriors of Forestclan, they never claimed to have seen them. He pressed against her and nodded. "I will try to keep that in mind, I'll try to remember some to tell you tomorrow." He told her softly. She and Aspenpaw were so big now, they were practically the same size as him. They were growing up before his very eyes but he has been so blinded by grief that he often missed it. "In a few moons, you two will get your names..." He remembered he had been around her age when they started his assessments. He wouldn't be surprised if in a moon or two, their names would be chosen.
Frostpaw took a moment to appreciate the sensation of the cool grass on her paw pads before she spoke. "I'm sure Aspenpaw has been looking for us at every gathering." She responded. Aspenpaw had always been bull-headed and determined, she wouldn't be surprised to find out that he was sneaking away to look for signs of them. Morningpaw wouldn't get that luxury, she probably had to stick close to Owlwing the whole time. She sat down and watched her brother as he played. He looked much skinnier than before, but the moons of running away from threats and climbing twoleg structures showed. She couldn't help but look at herself, noticing how lean she had also gotten. Their pelts no longer had a glossy shine from all of the fish. She started cleaning herself, grimancing at the taste of twoleg scent. She was sure she stunk as bad as fox dug. She wanted nothing more than to swim in the water and free her pelt from the stench, but they were never able to get close without being attacked by other cats. "There's no shelter." She responded between licks. "Also this is close to Forestclan territory."

Morningpaw lowered her head when Silvermist mentioned getting her new name. It was supposed to be all four of them, working to get their names. But now it was just her and Aspenpaw, slowly nearing the end of their training. Their father didn’t even seem excited, too busy being absent in his own mind waiting for the other two to come back. Speaking of getting her new name didn’t make her excited anymore, it made her shudder. No one was proud of her, at least it didn’t feel like it. She convinces herself to blame the kits for leaving, but Silvermist has the power to be involved. She refuses to see it though, her father was innocent and wasn’t hurting her on purpose. “I know..” Morningpaw mewed, feeling tears coming to her eyes. She lowered her head more so the tom couldn’t see her cry, feeling her heart wrench with every thought. Being busy with her training has occupied her mind, but sitting and talking to her father hurt. He wasn’t the same, but neither was she. She wanted to tell him everything she felt, like she used to be able to. But her words would most likely hurt him, he just wasn’t ready. Then again if he was never going to be ready there would never be a good time. “Father..” she trailed off and slowly looked up to him with tears in her eyes, “I can’t be excited for anything without you by my side.. I know you miss them- I do too. But you can’t let a lifetime go by waiting for them.” Morningpaw finally got the words out she had been wanting to say to him, with tears now rolling down her face. Why couldn’t this get better? Silvermist holding on for so long was tearing the family that’s left slowly apart, surely he could realize what’s happening?
Duskpaw was now rolling in the grass, growling at Frostpaws response. “Well we’re going to have to find a home in the trees, I love it here.” He continued to rub his back on the ground, appreciating the grass to the fullest of his being. For a moment he paused and looked for his sister as he lay upside down, “Azreal won’t be coming though!” He demanded and continued his rolling, feeling okay for the first time in moons. The guilt was always there, but for a moment he felt free. No one to hunt for, and he almost felt like he had no obligations to go back to Azreal. He just wanted to live, with no rules or anyone making him feel bad.

Silvermist was quiet for a long time, trying to think of what to say. He wanted to tell her that he wished for her to never experience the pain he was feeling but he knew that she was right now. Feeling abandoned and alone because of the actions of your loved ones. "I'm sorry." He told her, pressing closer to her as he spoke. "I know, I need to be stronger for you and your brother. I'll be better. I promise on Starclan, I'll become the father you two deserve." He hoped she would find some degree of comfort in his words, he wondered how he had been so strong in the past. He felt like a hollow husk of what he once was, like every word he spoke was empty. He pulled away to look at her, his chest aching as he saw her tears. "I am so proud of you Morningpaw. You are becoming a wonderful medicine cat. You are smart, caring and you always put others before yourself." He nuzzled her briefly, taking a moment to appreciate the family he did have. He knew he would never stop waiting for Duskpaw and Frostpaw, but he couldn't let Morningpaw and Aspenpaw slip away as well. "I'm so sorry. You were so a happy and bubbly kit and now here I am, making you cry. I'm so sorry."
Frostpaw watched her brother, not joining in but she found his actions entertaining enough. "You're acting like a kit." she told him, teasing him slightly as she spoke. She felt as though she was moons older than him, but she supposed it had always been like that, even when they were kits. She could remember always watching her siblings, keeping them out of danger, yet here she was with Duskpaw. She thought of what she could have done differently, but she knew he would have left regardless, she was glad that she had decided to go with him. He was too trusting, and too easily swayed by Azreal. Her gut instinct at the time had been correct. "If we wanted to go live in the forest, it would have to be the other side of Forestclan territory, further from the island." She told him, glancing at their surrounding, taking a moment to make sure that they weren't yet on the clan's territory. It seemed as though the scent markers were still a while away. "Azreal is probably watching us right now, she would find a way to come. You know that." She added. She knew Duskpaw spoke a lot of abandoning their mother, but he always seemed to forget about it when she was with them. Frostpaw felt it was better to keep the she-cat close to them though, it was better to keep an eye on her than to have her steal prey from under their noses. Azreal was smart, she played her game well. There were a few times in the beginning when she had Frostpaw fooled by sweet words and affection. No wonder she managed to get Silvermist wrapped around her claw.

Morningpaw cried even more when Silvermist looked at her and apologized, she knew he would never stop waiting for them and all she was doing was hurting herself more. At this point she wished she had never said anything, she knew it was making things worse. “Thank you..” She mewed disappointedly, feeling as though he was only saying it because she had said something to him. “I’m sorry too, I shouldn’t have said anything.” She looked away from him guiltily, wanting to run away to her bed like a kit, but she wasn’t a kit anymore. She needed to speak about her feelings and tell her father how she felt, or nothing would ever change. If he helplessly waited for the other kits to come back forever life would never change.. it wasn’t fair.
Duskpaw stopped rolling and laid on his stomach looking at Frostpaw, “I’ll find a way, someday.” He promised. There was no way he was going to stay around Azreal forever, this isn’t the life the two deserved. He stood up and shook himself off, “I guess we better hunt?” Duskpaw mewed and began to walk deeper into the forest, looking back to see if his sister was coming. It was nice to be in the forest, and he had to get his teeth on some fresh kill that doesn’t taste rotten.

Silvermist was quick to shake his head. "You don't need to apologize, you are not the one who needs to be sorry." He told her quickly, her expression told him everything. "I will never stop waiting for your sister and brother." He told her, looking to the tree line quickly before looking back to his kit. "I can't. Not until I know that they are happy and safe." There was a pause, he tried to gather his thoughts, trying to figure out how he could go back to how he was moons ago, but it wasn't possible now, that version of him died as soon as he watched his kits leave. "However, I'm still your father. I need to be there for you and Aspenpaw, even if they never come back." He fought back tears for a second, the idea of them never returning had been something he ignored, but he knew he had to come to terms with that possibility. "How about, I show you how to hunt right now. I want to she you catch your first mouse." He suggested, giving her a smile, this one was still sad but genuine. He wanted her to be happy, he wanted himself to be happy too, even if it was only for a moment.
Frostpaw followed her brother, much more relaxed than when they were in the twoleg place, but still alert. When they reached a clearing, she stopped. "This should be good." She stated, looking around, the forest was rich with the sound and scent of prey. "We are near a Forestclan marker, so be careful." She warned her brother. Part of her worried that he would get too excited and cross a border, or that a patrol would chase then further away even if they didn't cross. The pale cat watched Duskpaw closely making sure that he was listening to what she said. She wanted to start hunting as soon as possible, but she knew that safety was more important. The thought of a fresh, forest mouse almost made her drool. It had been so long since she had prey that tasted pure, without the lingering scent of twoleg waste and garbage that would coat your mouth and senses with every bite. "Maybe we will find an abandoned fox set, we could sleep out here for the night." She added, it would be safer than being back at the twoleg place.
