Unbeknownst to the clan, Northstar has been sneaking out at night in search of young Troutpaw's siblings. Her interference in the rogues' plans has cost her two of her five remaining lives - leaving her with only three. As the days go by, the time comes for Nightchaser and Peakrunner's kits to become apprentices. As promise by Hillrunner, Ripplepaw takes on the medicine cat mantle, while Rainpaw is given to Springheart to mentor, and Northstar herself takes on Wildpaw.

Troutpaw is made a warrior after finding his sisters. He is suprised when Rosie decides to stay with their father, who refuses to join the clan. However, Daphne decides to come back to the clan, taking on the name Dapplepaw. She is apprenticed to Blizzardhawk. Waspstreak and Hillrunner grow very weary of Northstar as she's getting old, and has very few lives left.

A severe bout of greencough hits the clan, taking out Coldshadow, Yarrowbreeze, Harestep, Palepaw, and Rabbitkit before Hillrunner and Ripplepaw can stop it. Unbeknownst to the medicine cat and his apprentice, Northstar also lost a life, but is trying to hide it to prevent her clan from worrying. In her old age, she has grown weary, and struggles to keep up with her younger clanmates.
The entire clan worries about the sickness, as some cats still show signs of it despite not falling terribly ill. Wildpaw, Willowfrond, and Wrenwing are quarantined once they continue to show signs, while Honeyslip and Crashclaw consider having another litter.

a massive blizzard hits the clan, taking out seven cats as it goes - Wildfrost, Dapplepaw, Willowfrond, Voleshade, Troutleap, Burdockstream, and Crashclaw - as well as one of Northstar's last two lives. Honeyslip is devastated by the loss of her mate, and the stress of the blizzard sends her into an early kitting. Surprisingly, all four of her kits survive, though one is born blind and another is very weak from the stress of the kitting.

After some time passes, Northstar loses her last life to natural causes, and Waspstreak takes his new place as leader. After careful deliberation, and a long talk with Hillrunner and Ripplewhisper, the newly named Waspstar chooses Riverstep as his deputy. Because she hasn't had an apprentice yet, some of the clan is concerned, but Waspstar informs them that she is about to have one, because it is time for Softpetal's kits to become apprentices. Riverstep will mentor Ridgepaw, Oakdapple will mentor Cloudpaw, and Cliffcloud will mentor Gorgepaw.

Realizing that the clan still has issues with his choice, Waspstar calls a clan meeting. He informs the clan that he has been speaking with Hillrunner, who agrees with his choice - they will be modifying the code they live by. Amidst the gasps and shouts of anger, he calmly reminds the clan that a number of them are rogue- or loner-born, himself and his sister included. Along with this, a number of cats show capabilities of being a great deputy even as an apprentice. He tells them that having an apprentice is not the sole sign that a cat is ready, and should not be the deciding factor. Because of these realizations, the following codes will change -
1. The cats will no longer judge their clanmates for relationships with cats outside the clan.
2. A cat will no longer be expected to have had an apprentice to be a deputy.
3. In the case of needing a deputy, the new deputy will no longer have to be chosen before moonhigh, to allow proper time for consideration of each candidate.
4. Trespassing cats will not be challenged unless showing themselves to be dangerous, due to the clan's nature of accepting loners and rogues.
5. Medicine cats will be allowed to have mates and kits, as if they were doing their job properly, an apprentice would be able to help where needed, and they wouldn't abandon their post for their family. In the case of a female medicine cat having kits, she will talk her apprentice through tasks that she cannot do at the time.
The clan is unsure of these changes, but the reminder of their history and the challenges that the code has provided in the past convince them to accept them, albeit warily.

Ripplewhisper finds fault in the final code. Not regarding the contents but the fact that a medicine cat and warrior life is supposed to have separate codes, separate lives. Allowing a leader to carelessly make rules for their medicine cats could anger StarClan. Hillrunner chides his apprentice, mentioning the omen of the five kits. “Is it to truly show approval? Or is it a challenge to Waspstar’s words?” Was Ripplewhisper’s only reply. Some of what Waspstar had in mind, had good intentions, of course. In the night, Rainpaw and Cloudpaw disappear. It is evident that they are still alive but left for unknown reasons. Waspstar asks the Clan to be gentle and reasonable, but the missing apprentices only further strains the already-heated Clan.

Waspstar grows tired of the clan, and calls a clan meeting. He asks them to explain their issues with his changes, and while he does listen, he also reminds them that some of the codes he'd changed had frequently caused issue within the clan - namely, when Northstar named a deputy the clan didn't think was ready, despite having proven themselves. He tells the clan that he only made the changes because he sees how much the code causes stress for his clanmate - with a knowing look at Hillrunner, who has been sitting close to Stormfrost. They continue to discuss for some time, and Waspstar takes everyone's thoughts into consideration, but asks them to give the new changes a chance. After the meeting, the clan has calmed down, though some still remain a bit weary of the changes.
Later that day, Waspstar begins delegating patrols to look for the two missing apprentices. He suspects the tension in the clan might have scared them.
