While out on a hunting expedition, Sleetstone, Flurryheart, Snowpaw and Nightpaw all bring home a large snow hare for the clan. However, while chasing it, Nightpaw rolls down a hill, though surviving a high fall. His only injury is a twisted/broken back leg. He is confined to the medicine cats den, where Moutainpaw and Cariboutrot are keeping a close eye on him.

After spending a moon or two helping out in the nursery, Nightpaw comes up with a new idea for a role in Summitclan. Bringing the idea to Northstar, the molly leader agrees to the idea and creates a new role called Nursery Helper. Nightpaw becomes the first nursery helper, and gains his full name, being called Nightchaser.

A pair of foxes and their cubs are found in the northern part of the territory. Flurryheart orders a patrol to chase them out. The patrol consists of Dapplestorm, Hailthorn, Juniperstorm, Frecklepaw and Sleetstone. The group successfully drives the group out, but not without a casualty. Frecklepaw dies later in the day from a wound that Cariboutrot couldn't save in time. Dapplestorm is mortified, and blames Flurryheart for her daughters death. The clan holds a vigil, with Northstar giving Frecklpaw a warrior name before she ascends to starclan, naming her Freckleshine. Freckleshine's siblings are all grieving, as are her parents, and the rest of the clan.

A large storm comes by, almost flooding into the camp of Summitclan. The clan retreats higher up the mountain they call home to prevent any deaths. However, while saving her apprentice, Hollowpaw, Northstar slips into a mudslide and loses a life, however emerging later alive with eight lives remaining. Hollowpaw is ever grateful for his mentor, as are Whispersong and Blizzardthorn and Hollowpaw's siblings.

On a routine trip around the mountain borders, Moonpaw, Rainpaw, Hollowpaw. and Peakpaw are invited along with their mentors to learn how to avoid the dangerous crags and loose rocks. However, danger strikes, and the group of cats finds themselves trapped on a treacherous ledge. The apprentices are the furthest from the cliff, and work together to help their mentors across. All seems to be going well, until things take a turn for the worse. Moonpaw is helping Jaysong across the growing cleft in the rock, when the entire ledge starts to fall. He yells for her to jump, but she refuses, and uses her last legs of energy to shove him across instead. Moonpaw falls with the rock face, and her brother Peakpaw is unable to catch her.

Back at camp, Northstar informs Whispersong and Blizzardthorn of the tragedy. That night, she gives all four cats their warrior names, and the entire clan sits vigil with the new warriors to mourn their family. They are given the names Raindust, Hollowshade, Peakrunner, and Moonpetal. The new young warriors swear they see Moonpetal sitting beside them in the moonlight.

As time passes the clan is completely at ease. That is until one night a terrible storm passes through the territory once more, shrouding the clan with cold and sickness. A majority of the cats heal up, but sadly, both Dipperkit and Verglas the elder pass from the terrible sickness. One too young, and one too old to fight the sickness. Northstar is horrified by another sudden storm that came with no warning from Starclan. Would her clan be taken away by storms and sickness? Or will they survive? Was Starclan watching over them, or letting them suffer a cruel fate?

She decides to take Mountainshadow with her to the cave that they speak to Starclan in, wanting answers.

Despite having a twisted paw, Wasppaw brings back an abundance of prey with the rest of the patrol. He proves to Northstar that he is a valuable warrior. Shadowstream announces that Hornetpaw as well has been doing amazing in her training. Northstar nods and holds a meeting, making Wasppaw and Hornetpaw warriors, naming them Waspstreak and Hornetflower.

With that, Jaysong and Tundraheart's kits are made apprentices, apprenticed to Fogshadow and Snowsight.

It is seen that Peakrunner and Nightchaser are getting friendly. Many assume they are going to become mates. News spreads that they've asked Raindust to surrogate a litter for them. (Nightchaser will be the actual father of the kits they just asked Peakrunner's sister so the kits will have Peakrunners genes.)
