After it is discovered that Wildfrost has been talking to cats that no one else can see, he is taken to the medicine den. There, he admits his paranoia of Northstar’s seemingly constant struggle with rogues - and that a cat he doesn’t know the name of has been talking to him, encouraging him to do something about it. He becomes confined to the medicine den while Mountainshadow and Hillpaw work to figure out what is happening. While Wildfrost is out of commission, Shadowchaser is named temporary deputy, and takes over Sparrowpaw’s training for the time being.
Meanwhile, Raindust has her second litter - and all involved are shocked. The two kits bear striking resemblances to the late Cliffkit and Black-kit. After much discussion, the pairnof toms and surrogate mother all decide to name these kits in honor of the two they lost.

While the new arrivals settle into clan life, Leopardpaw and Coldpaw earn their warrior names: Leopardshade and Coldshadow.
Dapplestorm finally has her kits, and while their birth is relatively hard on the queen, Whispersong nurses her friend through it. When one of the kits is born with a white mask, Dapplestorm asks Whispersong if she might like to name him Blizzardkit, after the permanent queen’s fallen love. Whispersong agrees, and Blizzardkit is welcomed to the world with his siblings Softkit and Avalanchekit.

While some of the Clan are on patrol, they discover prey that is being eaten and left at the border. Lilyberry seems particularly interested, and more alert than usual. She also becomes very protective of her kits, despite Nightchaser’s gentle encouragement to give them independence.

Sparrowpaw, Yarrowpaw, Wrenpaw and Poolpaw receive their names. Burrowlflighy gets his paw caught in a trap and breaks it permanently. After saving Stormkit from eating deathberries, which unknowingly were brought into camp by Sparrowclaw as he thought they were juniper berries, Hillpaw recieves his full name.
A lone fox is spotted by the border while Shadowchaser, Peakrunner and Waspstreak are hunting. They chase it off, but Shadowchaser is badly injured, being confined to the medicine cats den. His injuries are extremely severe.

Dapplestorn's kits are apprenticed, and given to Waspstreak, Voleshade, and Poolflower to be trained. Hillrunner and Mountainshadow continue to discuss Lilyberry's condition, while Northstar decides that she needs to get the truth from the she-cat as soon as possible. Dapplestorm decides to retire, as both she and Shadowchaser are growing older, and Shadowchaser agrees to join her when he heals. Waspstreak is named the new temporary deputy while Wildfrost recovers from his hallucinations.

Despite his promise, Shadowchaser dies a day or two later from his injuries becoming severely infected. Dapplestorm is extremely heartbroken from the death of her mate and dies of heart break. Many aren't surprised, and are mourning the pair heavily.
Wildfrost is afraid that his hallucinations aren't going to clear up any time soon and decides to step down as deputy. Waspstreak is made deputy.
Burrowflight takes an interest in Nightchaser and Wrenwing's jobs as nursery helpers, and inquires if he should become a nursery helper.

Burdockstream moves into the nursery expecting kits. (Someone can give them a father if they want).
Northstar gently tries to pry the information from Lilyberry, but to no avail. The kits begin to get scared of their mothers outbursts. Shadowstream decides to retire.
Lilyberry finally admits that the prey stolen is by a rogue group which she used to be a part of. Although Lilyberry tells Northstar that she was expecting a higher-ranks kits, which is not allowed in her group, as she was a lower-rank . She fears they are after the kits, and if they find them, they will kill them.
