Mai smiled, blushing a bit. "Father always said I needed to be presentable, even asleep." she murmured. "I've never been seen in public like this before..."
"You really like the way I look?" she whispered, her father's words repeating over and over in her head. "Father wouldn't- No. Father isn't here," she sighed, shaking her head as if to rid of the clinging voice.

"Of course I like the way you look," Aedan smiled at her gently "You're so beautiful. Can't you see that?"
She was very pretty, Aedan had always thought so. But didn't she? It hadn't crossed his mind that she might be under constant judgement for her looks, because that wasn't something that happened in his culture. Nobody judged anyone by the way that they looked.

Mai went pink in the face, she had never been told that before. She was always being told to look a certain way and she had gotten used to changing herself to look 'presentable'.
(Should we skip to when they get there?)

[If you want to x]
"Alright, we should get some rest," Aedan smiled "When we wake up we'll be there, and then we'll decide what we want to do"
He lay down under his furs, settling down for the night.

(Ok ^-^)
Mai nodded, rolling up into a ball in the middle of the furs. She only took up a small space, her tiny frame seeming even smaller under the large, bulky fur. "Night," she whispered, smiling.

When Aedan woke the next morning he could hear the bustle of people on the deck, and he gently shook the sleeping Mai awake.
"We're here," he said gently "are you ready to go and see what's out here?"

Mai blinked her eyes open, glancing around. Quickly she realised where she was and jolted awake, stretching out. "Yes!" she squeaked, all of her nervousness (Is that even a word? xD) disappearing immediately.

"Good. You might want to keep the furs, it'll be cold," Aedan said as he handed her his own fur to make sure she was warm.
He stood up and offered her his hand to help her out, before waiting until the deck had fallen silent, only then beginning to sneak off the ship

Mai grasped his hand, standing up gingerly. She clung onto the furs, following behind him. The bustle of people eventually went silent, leaving an eery silence.

He led her off the ship, stepping onto a bust little port, ducking through people and leading Mai through the crowds.
"Uh, I'm sure in a minute you'll get a nice view of the landscape here. We just ned to get through these crowds"

Mai nodded, making her way behind him. She tried her best to catch a glance through the endless amounts of people.

Finally he got through the crowd of people, and they were left standing atop a hill with a view of lush green rolling hills and a valley in the distance, through which a river was winding lazily.
"Uh…this is my home," he smiled, rubbing his neck a little shyly "I never thought I'd get to show you this"

Mai gasped, awe-struck. She glanced around, staring at ever tiny detail. The ground seemed untouched by humans, no buildings in sight. She had never seen anything like it.

He grinned as she gasped "I'm glad you like it. My village is just through that valley. But we don't have to go there if you want. We don't have to go and see them, we can go somewhere else, we could find somewhere to stay together"

Mai seemed split. She wanted to meet his people but at the same time she was worried of what they would think of her. "M-maybe I could just see if they are... Friendly?" she murmured,, still awe-struck by the landscape.

Aedan nodded "Okay. I'm sure they will be"
Aedan led the way, and they began the walk to the valley, until a small village appeared on the horizon.
"Are you sure you are ready to meet them? They're friendly, but can be a little overbearing"

Mai gulped, then nodded. She was determined to meet the people he talked about for so long.

He nodded "Okay, then, here goes"
He led the at into the village, and a young woman grinding wheat on a quern looked up at him. She was about twenty-one tall and slim with sheets of pale blonde hair down past her waist and held together in a neat braid. She had blue eyes too, which lit up the moment she saw Aedan.
The woman ran up to him, enveloping him in a hug, already crying with happiness "Aedan, is it really you?"
"Yes, it's me," Aedan replied with a smiled before moving out of the hug and moving a little closer to Mai "Uh, Mai, this is my sister, Idelle. Idelle, this is Mai"
"Mai?" Idelle repeated "You brought back a Roman?"
"Yes, but she had been kind to me. She is not one of the ones who hurt me, I promise, Idelle"
"Oh...well...in that case, it's okay. As long as she didn't hurt you" and she turned to Mai, smiling "Sorry about that, Mai. I get protective of him. It's a pleasure to meet you"

Mai pressed close to Aiden, slightly shy. "H-hello," She stuttered, immediately becoming nervous again. What would happen if they didn't believe Aiden's word? What would they say?

Aedan took her hand and squeezed it to let her know that it was okay as Idelle caught sight of his clipped ear.
"What happened to your ear?" she asked, concerned, eyebrows raised.
"It's okay," Aedan replied "Don't worry about it. It means something in Rome but it doesn't mean anything here. It's not important"
He didn't want to let his sister know what had actually happened to him. She didn't need to know that he had been a slave. He could keep it quiet.
But Idelle wasn't having any of it so she turned her gaze to Mai "Mai, since my older brother is being stubborn, would you tell me what the clipped ear means?"

Mai gulped. She looked towards Aedan, as if to get an answer. She knew it was best to keep it secret. "I-it means that you are a foreigner in Rome," She answered. It was only half of the truth. "So people know how to treat you"
She hoped that it was enough of the truth to convince her.

Aedan had given her another squeeze of the hand to let her know she had done the right thing.
"Told you it wasn't that important. And it didn't hurt" He lied. Of course it had hurt, it had hurt like hell. But Idelle didn't need to know that.
Idelle nodded "Alright. I'm going to tell the others you're here" she said, hurrying away.
"Thank you," Aedan said to Mai "and sorry for letting her put you on the spot like that."

Mai smiled, "It's fine, I can tell a few white lies," she giggled, her excitement rushing back. The village seemed so peaceful, unlike anything she'd seen.
"The people seem so nice... Why would my people want to take them?" she murmured, mostly to herself.

"Land, power, resources, slaves" Aedan had replied to her question "Take your pick. When you're building a huge empire like your people are, you tend to forget about the little things. Like the fact that the people you take for slaves are quite nice and don't deserve it. It happens with every big empire. It's not a big deal"

Mai looked up at Aedan, "Thank you for taking me here, I don't know where I'd be if I hadn't met you... Probably watching more gladiaters fight to the death right in front of me." she murmured, looking around at her surroundings.

Aedan smiled "Hey, no problem. Oh, and here come more relatives. Uh, these are my older brothers, Drustan and Esca"
He barely had time to say that before a large blonde man, around 25, barrelled into him, nearly knocking him over but making him laugh nontheless. Another man, with slightly darker hair and slightly slimmer, built more like Aedan, stood a little, further behind
"Little brother!" the bigger man said "Where you been for five years, huh?"
"Rome, Drustan" Aedan replied dryly "You know where I've been"
"But you didn't come back," the slimmer man piped up
"I'm sorry it took so long, Esca, but I hadn't been able to come back until today. But I'm back now. And boys, I'd like you to meet Mai. Before you ask, yes she's a Roman, and yes she's nice."
He stood to the side to that Mai could be seen clearer as the two men offered her their hands in greeting.

Mai winced as the man barreled into him. She listened to their conversation quietly, standing like a tree, no, more like a sapling in front of them. "H-hi" she chirped, waving and shaking their hands gently. She felt so tiny compared to the men, each towering over her. Who knew what they were thinking of her. All she knew was that she hoped that it was not hostile.

"Nice to meet you," Drustan smiled "Hops you've been keeping our little brother out of trouble"
"Oh, yes" Aedan replied sarcastically "because I get in all of the trouble."
Drustan grinned, ruffling Aedan's hair "Come on, you're accident - prone. Always have been"
