I read the cliffs notes summary for Squirrelflight's Hope on the wiki bc my curiosity got to me, y'all maybe I'm just not getting it but why is this book controversial? Yeah it sounds drama-ridden and contrived but I feel like most warrior cats books fit that bill, especially anything post-TNP. Like I do think it's time to move on to other characters but nothing Bramblestar or Squirrelflight are doing here seems that awful? I'm too scared to go into Warriors General to investigate this I may not have outgrown the books but I've outgrown the fandom arguments lol Coming as someone who dislikes the book, it was mostly because Bramblestar and Squirrelflight just argue constantly. Couples naturally fight, and it's bound to happen with this pairing in particular given their history, but it just felt excessive and forced for the sake of the plot. She undermines his authority, he belittles her. He struggles to try and make the best choice, she tries to make it for him. I'm pretty sure the only time they're not at each other's throats is when they're watching their grandchildren and trying to help Sparkpelt deal with her grieving process. There were also the Sisters who, while I thought were cool in concept, were not executed well and their leader in particular wasn't very sympathetic despite being made out to be that way. Kate Cary, who wrote it, has mentioned she dislikes Bramblestar and Squirrelflight, so I can't imagine she was having a great time writing it. Especially when Cherith got to write the SE for Graystripe (Kate's favorite) literally right afterwards. SqH overall just felt...frustrating and contrived. On here anyways you can have a civil discussion on in without it getting too heated. Other places like twitter or tumblr, not so much. |

They bicker the whole book, often in whiny ways, and its because they suck at communicating their feelings. So it's just super frustrating to read.

Hm I can see that being annoying. I think it doesn't faze me because reading through the summary I think the decision that made this book this messy isn't actually in this book? Like the trainwreck event I'm seeing here is not Squirrelflight and Bramblestar being petty and argumentative with each other, but rather the fact he made her his deputy to begin with? I guess I'll have to catch up eventually to see what that's about, but tbh I don't think any context would make me consider that a wise decision lol
admittedly i might also be way more bothered by the book if i read it in full and had to sit through the actual argument dialogue tho

Speaking of which... has anyone here ever written a collaboration before? I wonder what it's like for the Erins to write such a popular series together o:
^^" to answer my own question: I've never written a big story with anyone else (although my sister and I have brainstormed one before but have yet to write it). But I have written a very long short story with my sister before. But, the way we did it was we had kind of brainstormed ideas and then I had written it and then she went back objectively and edited it/cut things out that were unnecessary/etc.

looked into it and didn't find if Squirrelflight/Bramblestar have individual creators, though Bramblestar is apparently visually based off Cherith's cat so possibly her.
Also I was going to say no but I have technically written collaboratively before, way back when the old forums were still around me and the rest of the avatar crew were writing a collective atla fanfiction. We wrote alternating chapters, and it was very fun even if I don't remember if the actual writing was any good. I've never collaborated on anything original though.

I've done a couple bigger collabs before~ It really feels like a big rp project more than anything tbh, even for projects that were irl lmao
Same kind of planning, same character and plot creation phase, then just back and forth. I've done projects where it's alternating chapters (easy) and projects where it was true collab (sit in a call and literally write together on the same doc)
I think for them it might even be easier, in a way, because the characters by and large stay the same, the setting is the same and old, and they're alternating BOOKS for the most part, so you can finish an entire arc without stepping on anyone's toes. The issue would be if they're writing, say, book 3 and 4 at the same time... not knowing quite what the final draft will be; though I bet they tend to have strict outlines (that maybe even the authors don't have control over)

I've never done a collab, but I feel like that's maybe for the best since I'm kind of a control freak. I'd probably end up trying to micromanage the other collaborator's writing and then we'd both be unhappy.

Snowkit's death hit me extremely hard considering he had next to no on-page characterization. Definitely one of my most traumatic Warriors memories. The whole reason I actually joined the og forums back in 2010 was because I found warriors fanfic and realized I could write a story that would fix this awful injustice lol

There's a pretty decent app called MorseMania that I've been using to learn by ear ^^ I know it by flash (at low transmit speeds only) but apparently by ear you can learn to go a lot faster once you get good at it. Morse is the most important life skill you'll use on the daily so you totally learn it /s |

random question for ya’ll: do any of you know Morse Code or have a desire to learn it? I’m going to attempt to teach myself how to do Morse Code. Me! I've always been super interested in 19th century and early 20th century technology and the main setting in at least one of my stories is even inspired by the former! I even listen to the Titanic's final transmissions on occasion. |
