So, a question for all of you How many projects do you have? How many do you work on at the same time? Technically three, but at least two of them are series and one of said series is divided into arcs. Also, define "work on" lol! I'm still on the planning stage for most of them and I always have a pretty good idea on where I want the story to go whenever I start a new project, but it's the actual writing portion that actually has me stumped. I started working on my standalone, though, and as it's a historical fantasy novel, hopefully it'll be easier for me to deal with than the others.

So, a question for all of you How many projects do you have? How many do you work on at the same time? If a series counts as one project, the two. If individual books count as a project, then three. I’m still sorta working on editing the first book in my series, and I’m currently writing the second. Meanwhile I have my warriors fic with all my OCs, which is still at the outlining part.

So, a question for all of you How many projects do you have? How many do you work on at the same time? Short answer is that I like to only work on one project at a time. But longer answer would be that I have many ideas that I come up with and if my brain decides it wants to turn towards that for half a second, I do that. But I wouldn’t call those ones projects bc it’s mainly just notes or like one chapter or something. For projects, though, I have like… 4 main ones? But two of them I have not looked at in years, one I write if I need a break or sudden inspiration strikes, and then the final one is my main main one that I dedicate most (if not all) of my time to… so… one project at a time xD

So, a question for all of you How many projects do you have? How many do you work on at the same time? Just the one. I’m more of the type of writer who devotes their life/career to one grand work, instead of a proliferation of many works. GRRM vs Stephen King, if you will.

So, a question for all of you How many projects do you have? How many do you work on at the same time? I generally work on about two at a time (currently that's the main one I've been whining about in this thread, and then a second one that's a simpler middle grade fantasy I occasionally write when I'm stuck on something in the main one). I think having multiple projects can be helpful to keeping your creativity going and staying productive, especially if they're fairly different projects, though it also might slow the writing process down somewhat.
But in terms of how many I have total. Oh boy. I think I have like 15 WIPs? Most of them have been shelved at the moment though while I work on developing and writing the two main ones, I'll occasionally jot down ideas for them and I'm hopeful I'll eventually return to them, but probably not anytime soon.

So, a question for all of you How many projects do you have? How many do you work on at the same time? I usually work on two at a time (three if I'm actively updating a fanfiction ig), though I've been getting better at focusing on one and actually finishing it. I have wayyyyy too many projects on the bench tho, so many that I've been recently releasing a few of my worldbuilds / plots / concept bundles as open source just to see them USED instead of rotting in my head zzzz I participated in the twelve days of worldbuilding two years back and I've still never TOUCHED any of those worlds again, despite having big dreams for them and doing so much concept art and theorycrafting..... and that's why I have my lil post-it clans thread so I can have a place just to hyperfocus on something fun for two or three days and then never have to think about it again zzz

It’s interesting to see that a lot of people seem to have about 2-3 that they’re working on, I would love to hear more about all your projects!
As for me, I have about 20 ideas, however I typically only work on 1-5 at a time (writing only 1-2, with occasionally some additional writing on the side for the others, whenever I’m inspired). Though admittedly, even with a good amount that I work on, I tend to put most of my focus onto just one in specific, even while I’m working on others.

Two of them are from the series I’ve been writing, which I briefly explained the plot of on page two. The other is my warriors OCs which j need to start updating more often, lol.

I see many on here are creating fantasy-esque stories, so I wanted to ask, do you create your own conlangs/fictional languages? I've made a few myself that is mostly derived from Celtic languages, so I'm curious if others have done the same.

the short answer: yes.

My fictional characters are dogs, so like the warrior series, certain words that u make are used to replace those that dogs wouldn’t know. For example, if a dog were to say 3PM in my book, they’d say “third afternoon skytime”. It’s not anything crazy. I believe earlier on this page (or the previous one), I said I want to start a project with Morse code having a big role in the plot though.

I do conlangs! Mostly ground-up stuff but I'm currently working on a language that's an evolution of a three-language merge/creole c:
also I wanna talk about like everything in relation to my projects esp the two i'm working on but also i get nervous posting any details about them online :') But i guess more generally my main project is the one i've mentioned that i'm struggling with worldbuilding in, it's an adult sci-fi-ish series. The other project is a middle-grade fantasy book about alchemy that I don't think I'll be doing as extensive-worldbuilding for, it's more of a straightforward adventure story. Though as I've gotten further into it the tonality of it has shifted a lot and i'm wondering if middle grade is still the appropriate audience for it, so that's been its own problem.

Brownie I've struggled with how to class this series in terms of genre a lot so at this point i'm just like it's somewhere sci-fi adjacent probably lol
For where some of the confusion is coming from, it's secondary world with no interworld travel, which is generally a characteristic of high fantasy, not scifi. However it takes linguistic and societal cues from our world (in the early drafting process i was also including real-world religion, although that idea ended up being scrapped), and there's no true magical creatures/abilities/world features, everything is at least somewhat scientifically justified, even the more far-fetched features (and there are some pretty far-fetched features), which makes it more like real-world spec-fic which usually falls under sci-fi. Further confounding things is that it's vaguely historical? They have some advanced technology, but basically equivalent to us about 100-150 years ago rather than anything futuristic, and shifted to vaguely how I think tech would have developed in their particular resource availability and geological situation, which in some ways borders on alt-history?
I think between the scientific verve of it and the fact that while I don't really explain it in-story there's hints at this world in some way being connected to and progressing from our world, sci-fi is the closest to a genre fit I have for it, but at the same time it's lacking so many of the classic hallmarks of sci-fi that just calling it straight sci-fi always seems odd to me. idk.

Same! Also, I've been meaning to ask this, but does anyone else have any specific song (lyrical or otherwise) that applies to your story in any way (plot, setting, theme, characters, etc...)? Kinda like a theme song, basically.

Brownie: scary for a few reasons. One reason I don’t share on the internet is because I love my stories so much but I’m afraid that someone else might steal them ): Another reason (that I don’t share outside of the computer) is because I’m afraid that the moment I speak of it will be the moment I stop writing it. Once it is written, then the world will see it

Tinn; sort of, yes! I’ve created a playlist and I do have chapter theme songs and a theme song for the entire thing! Mostly what happens is that I’ll just have a random song on and, even if it has nothing to do with the chapter, that ends up being the theme song of the chapter xD But as for book theme songs and character theme songs, usually those come along afterwards. For instance, my book theme song is a song I just randomly stumbled on. I listened to it, thought it connected with my story, and decided to add it to my playlist! And then for characters, if I hear a song with lyrics that match them, I’ll say that it’s their theme song

Ngl there are multiple characters and specific scenes that have been inspired by a particular song.

ig I kinda want people to steal my ideas? because I don't feel any ideas I have are ever mine, they're just synthesizations of all the other media I've ever consumed through the lens of my experiences and in sharing, I'm adding that spice to the pot of everyone else's mixing pool so they can use my ideas as a launching pad into making all their own creative works better. I do have a few ideas I jealously hoard but those are few and far in between (and mostly because they contain more of me and my own struggles than I like to admit to even myself!)
I totally get the "the more I talk about it the less likely I am to actually write it" vibe tho. if an idea doesn't get written within the first two weeks of having it then it's not getting done //shrug I like to think I can put it in a box for later but it's all wishful thinking lmaooo
On the topic of music: no. I don't really associate music with creative works, I'm not really a music kind of person

I might have missed this question already asked in the thread, but who would you say are your biggest inspirations as a writer? For example, Tolkien influenced me as a kid (he's influenced everyone tbf), and as a grew up I ended up reading more of Robin Hobb, George R R Martin, Brandon Sanderson, Robert Jordan, and Andrzej Sapkowski, and I would say overall they influenced me to write more into the fantasy genre.
Or perhaps not even authors or other books. Are there any TV series' or movies that influence you too? Writers on those? I'm curious.
