Hi everyone! This is not going to be fancy because I am lazy (I was gonna think of a better excuse but nah, I'm just lazy)
Anyways! I thought it might be fun to make a group for writers, doesn't matte what you write, all writers are welcome here, and I would love to get to know the writing community of the Forums a bit better! (also if any of y'all have a discord, let me know and I can set up something there too because admittedly thats the place im the most active)
Alright so! Yeah, tell me what you write, share your goals (is anyone here doing Camp NaNo in April?), your writing memes, brainstorm ideas, or whatever the heck you want!
As for me, I'm an indie, published author on Kindle Vella, I currently write mysteries, however I have ideas for many many other stories outside of the mystery genre. My current stories are The Nighthawks (a story about a group of spies in New York, who are trying to stop the mysterious agency known as Elysium), and then a second story that isn't currently out yet, but is another mystery, except that one is also a YA paranormal, so a very different kind of mystery than my first book, lol
Feel free to ask me about either of them, goodness knows I can talk about my characters and stories for ages if prompted!
And yeah, I've been meaning to make a writers thread for awhile, but again...lazy

I'm just gonna lurk here mk~
I'm a sci-fi / spec fic writer, currently on break from working on a fantasy epic by writing a smaller cyberpunk-y project that will probably be a standalone novel. If I ever wanted to trad publish, this would be the debut I'd promote most likely, so I've been putting a lot of attention into the planning phases. I feel really good about the world and plot, less so about the characters and style, so I've been taking a step back to make sure I'm on the right track before I go too much further into the draft~ Been doing "research" by reading some genre classics. If anyone has any recs that'd be awesome.

Hello! I'm part of the writing thread in OTW and in personal dens. Sadly, they're not as active as they once were ): It's so good to see a new post like this ^^" congratulations, Tree, on getting published!! Would you recommend indie publishing as the way to go? I hope to publish one day, but at the moment it's slow going due to a lack of time/fatigue. However, I'm really hoping to get back into a more consistent writing habit. I miss the days where I could come home from school, finish my homework real quick, and then jump on the computer to write. Or spend my weekends writing before anyone else in the house got up <3 I love writing historical fiction, supernatural, and fantasy (and others, haha, but that's just to name a few)... but at the moment I'm writing more of a fantasy! (:

I might be doing camp nano! I'm in a spot of research/worldbuilding hell but I want to get back into the actual writing soonish and I feel like camp might be a good springboard to get back to it. But also between work and school not sure I'll have time for it, might have to set my goal pretty low. I'm a spec fiction writer currently working on an adult scifi series that kinda genre blends into a whole bunch of other things? Also have lots of other WIPs, but trying to dedicate most of my writing time to this one rn.

When is the next NaNo? I always lose track xD Also… I’ve never officially done one. However, I usually take that month to attempt to write more or try to reach a certain goal.
Edit: oh, right… April xD

I've never done Camp Nano, but I've done November many times before for fun! There are currently three I wish to focus on for actual publishing, but with this one in particular, I can't seem to get through it because I unfortunately keep changing my mind on the worldbuilding and I hate that I'm like this!

oof yeah that's rough. I'm trying to pre-plan some of the world for this project, since my usual method (just start slapping characters on the wall until something sticks) is not giving me the results I'm looking for :/ Planning sucks

Honestly, what happens to me a lot is I’ll think of things along the way and then come up with new backstories that add onto the bigger story xD And generally I’ll have a big outline but I don’t have the middle 100% worked out xD
|
|
|
Post by Brownie on Mar 20, 2023 19:26:05 GMT -5
Who ever does middle plotting?? tbh I try to just have a few ideas of emotional problems I want my characters to face and then make sure those emotional points are hit with whatever logical way the plot flows
I also FINALLY sat down and finished drafting some of the problem points for this project ;-; still a lot of work to be done, but I decided on a direction. It might still not be the right choice, but I'm gonna work it through and see where it goes, and if it doesn't hit right, I can try again with one of the other options I'd been debating

XD like for me, I feel like it's "we got an end game" now, characters... figure out how to get there XD And then they do. And it's beautiful, haha. And I just love how crazy it is that all this stuff just comes together and like it's just beautiful (again, haha) how stories just come from your head. Like, there's nothing... and then all the sudden there's just everything. And they just exist as if they always existed.
Awesome! Are you happy with what you got done? Sometimes those parts are so hard though bc sometimes you stop writing that certain bit for some time bc you just can't get past that point. Honestly, that's a good idea though bc if it doesn't work out, well, you'll have learned along the way, written a nice deleted scene that you can spoil your readers with later (haha), and also you might have developed more character/plot/etc than you would have if you hadn't gone in that direction, even if it isn't the one you're going to end up taking.

that's a big mood ;-; I still very much believe in letting characters drive the first draft and then making a good plotline out of it in the edits, but I also know that I do very well with outlines (even if I feel literal pain when making them)
I think I am, though I'm worried a little bit that it could dip into something very cliche and/or overdone if I don't properly handle the character arcs. I've had this concept for a long long while, but I never had a clear plotline or character to fit the problem, so I drafted a few options and basically just mixed and matched archetypes and motivations until I got a product I think will be enjoyable to work with. I have a really bad habit of making characters that don't feel like the main character in their own story, so I really wanted to do some hard thinking and planning and find a character with both the temperment and motivations to drive their own choices (as well as putting them in a situation that ALLOWS them to make their own choices, which a few of my potential plotlines drafted took a lot of the character agency away; they had their own pros and cons but I think character agency is something I wanted to pursue with this project specifically)

Brownie; honestly, yes, my characters pretty much dictate everything. And I love how some characters just demand to be heard and all the sudden a side character becomes a main character xD It makes me so happy<3 One of my characters was originally supposed to be a side character and now he’s literally my favorite character and I even added him in as a POV xD Good luck! I hope your characters take you in the direction you’re looking to go! Somehow, they always figure it out, even if it’s completely different than originally intended!

Ohho, very intersting! I imagine that's a super helpful tool, especially if you're looking to completely construct a language from the ground up. The main region in my worldbuilding is heavily inspired by East Slavic cultures, so I started constructing a language family that is meant to sound and function similarly to the real-life counterpart. Which, basing a fictional language on a real existing one in some ways is easier than working completely from scratch. Right now I have a "parent" language and alphabet based primarily on Old Church Slavonic, and from that I derive two different dialects. One for the main region of the story, and another for an isolated neighboring country. I'll tell you what, you don't realize how many pronouns are in a language until you have to create three different versions!! It's kind of a pain lol but also really fun. I love philology.

Bruh I've only really tryhard conlanged for one project and I love it so much but I'd never have the patience to work out a finished product ;-; This one is constantly in the WIP zone (for years) and it's fun but it's changed so much that the old stuff doesn't fit with the new stuff at all anymore (but I'm too lazy to fix it at this point...) Mostly I just pick acceptable phenomes off the IPA chart, maybe put a little thought into acceptable syllable construction, dipthongs, valid consonant pairs, and maybe how verbs, adjectives and tense if I'm feeling spicy, and then just kinda slap some words around until I have what I need for the scope of the project haha Slavic base sounds really cool tho. They have some awesome sounds and pretty unique consonants to play around with. I actually know very little about slavic grammar construction tho, I've never done any research into it =O www.ipachart.com interactive IPA btw it's great

I've done a lot of conlang work. Mostly completely ground-up stuff where I construct a phonologic alphabet for a language and then start developing morphology/grammar/syntax/semantics, but the most recent one I've been working on for my worldbuilding disaster project is actually based off of real world languages cause its vaguely alt-history. Specifically I'm synthesizing three real-world languages in a way where I'm attempting to at least semi-accurately imagine how they'd linguistically combine and evolve over a significant period of time. Given some of the ways I've developed the history of this world I think I might need to do at least some cursory work on a second language with a similar evolutionary pattern but. I'm just gonna leave that alone for now bc I've already made enough work for myself with what I have.

See I come from the opposite direction when language building. My first approach is all the nitty gritty grammatical structure stuff, like whether declensions exist, how many verb tenses there are, does the reflexive exist, etc. Then kinda trickle down from that. I did study Latin from 4th-12th grade tho so I'm super comfortable with exploring grammar structure.
Most Slavic languages are not too different from romantic languages in their grammar construction. Although they're the only European language group that still extensively use a full case system for nouns (most just have the possessive and oblique).
I have to say that one of the fun parts about deciding to construct a parent language is all the research I had to do in understanding how and why pronunciations and stuff change over time. Like I found out that Old Slavonic used to have three numbers (singluar, plural, but also "dual"). Or that there's no third person plural possessive adjective ("their pots"). Super fascinating.

Volga German or Yiddish might be an interesting case study for that. Though it kinda depends on how exactly the languages merges. Also I feel that about making more work for yourself. I recently decided that every piece of song or poetry within my story, I will first write completely in the conlang, and then "translate" it as closely as possible into English whilst keeping the rhyme schemes. Why? Self-loathing, apparently.
