I think people are allowed to point out if they think something is disrespectful, whether you agree with it or not, and I think the map host has also had previous issues fueling this so that's a whole other can of worms.
Obviously death threats and harassment is ridiculous and shouldn't be happening but most people I've seen talking about this have been condemning harassment of the participants in particular.
Anyway, I don't think threads dissing the community as a whole are allowed? It just always leads to drama.

Yeah that's definitely wrong and I wish people knew how to keep a lid on their attitudes when it comes to this stuff, all it should take is some gentle explaining if there really is an issue.
And sorry, I guess it seemed like you were bc, the thread title.

What bothers me most is that they are literally harassing and bullying a CHILD. She is like, 14. And the people doing it are adults.
It's sickening.

What bothers me most is that they are literally harassing and bullying a CHILD. She is like, 14. And the people doing it are adults. It's sickening. 99% percent of the harassers are also 14, white, and non-egyptian. if you read the comments, none of them seem to know what they're talking about. Which is funny, because the ones that actually are Egyptian seem to have no problem with this from what I've seen. I hate it when people do this. I do think they could've done more with the Egyptian aspect, but if not even a single person from the country this MAP is apparantly appropriating from has a problem with it (again, from what I've seen), then I don't see what the big deal is. They need to cut it out with this white savior nonsense already. I've also seen people getting angry because the host used a song by someone who apparently isn't all that nice. I don't know the situation with that at all, but shouldn't that be on the actual songwriter then, and not a 14 year old who just wanted to do something fun about Leopardstar? And this "should've known better" thing—even with the internet, how many of us have done or said something without doing research first?

I....wait...don't cats have strong ties to Egypt?? How is this cultural appropriation? The only thing I can possibly see as that is the song maybe? But other than that, they're cats....not irl humans culturally appropriating actual Egyptian culture. Were the cats design with the intent of being offensive? Or am I just missing something? Either way, there's no excuse for these artist and the map host to be bombarded with harassment, having criticism is fine, but sending death threats is disgusting.

I....wait...don't cats have strong ties to Egypt anyways?? How is this cultural appropriation....someone please explain. From what I can see, apparently it's because the MAP is using the aesthetic of Ancient Egypt simply for the sake of it without really understanding what it means. I've also seen a few comments pointing out some inaccuracies with the appearances, like the earrings that Leopardstar wears aren't accurate to what the Ancient Egyptians would've worn.

People can hold criticism for designs and what not, but was the host of the map even intentionally trying to make it as accurate as possible? Or were they just making designed inspired by Cleopatra and Egyptian culture? Are the inaccuracies offensive in a negative light or something? I'm genuinely wondering this as someone that's deeply concerned that people would turn to death threats over a two minute video about fictional cats is all...

I'm pretty sure the host and animators just wanted to make something fun for Leopardstar, but ended up relying on what the West usually sees when one thinks of Ancient Egypt (gold jewelry and the Eye of Ra, no idea about the bandanas, though). I don't know, I can see why it would be seen as stereotypical even if it's positive, but even then, the reactions are extreme, especially where the literal death threats are concerned. And like I said in another post, no one who's actually from Egypt seems to have much of a problem with this anyway.

So it's probably just the usually non-poc crusaders who try to "defend" minorities through horribly extreme methods, yet again. This isn't the first time I've seen something like this happen before, and it honestly probably won't be the last. I've looked through the comments and seen actual eastern people speak about how they felt over the video, and for the most part, like you said, they didn't mind it, some even enjoyed it, and some found it entertaining and funny. It baffles me that non-poc people feel the need to speak over actual people in those said culture and try to "defend" us when there's no defending needed, especially not that aggressively. Death threats? This is ridiculous at this point.

The MAP is historically inaccurate in terms of what ancient Egyptians wore but just because it is doesn't mean it's cultural appropriation. What, is it cultural appropriation now when all those shows have Vikings with horned helmets? Is it cultural appropriation in all those Medieval stories where the armor is laughably incorrect? No, I would not think so. What makes this even more egregious is that it's not like this stuff has any relevance to modern Egypt, the people in Egypt nowadays are Muslims or Coptic Christians. Any semblance of ancient Egyptian customs and religion were already in their death knell by the time the Roman Christians took over, and when it was conquered by the Rashidun caliphate it was pretty much already gone. There is no one who actually worships Horus nowadays except for neopagans, who can claim zero lineage to ancient Egypt anyway.
It is very telling that 90% of the people getting upset about this are lily-white themselves. Western white savior complex is absurd sometimes. This is just another version of the feather discourse

Also lmao wait until you tell these so called savior culture idiots that Cleopatra herself was a Greek woman with no biological ties to a majority of the indigenous people of Egypt, considering it was being led by greek speaking rulers for years and years. Sooo if this is about this whole false pretense of culturally appropriating a person of color, congratulations, Cleopatra was white anyway. That doesn’t even begin to cover the fact that these are cats wearing gold and symbolistic motifs that have been shown in art and paintings in the past. Many of them are not actually real outfits worn by people anyway, but merely symbols made up for a long gone religion. Legitimately, there are actual harmful and malicious portrayals out there that you could be attacking yet you choose to attack a cat video? Touch some grass, holy hell.

How much time on your hands do you have to harrass a 14-year-old whose first language isn’t English about an animation project about a book series with talking cats? Please get a job. Death threats are not acceptable in any circumstance.

I've seen this happen before, sort of(I feel like it's definitely a bit of a different case here, but still has some similarities) with the "Won't say I'm in Love" Sandstorm MAP which has then been taken down. A couple of people on twitter complained about it. I honestly didn't get that because I'm Greek and I saw that it was based on the Disney movie, Hercules. It really wasn't disrespectful either and rather cute. I know people have different opinions on that and that's fine, but I really don't believe it harms or makes fun of Greek people :/

It's a shame it got taken down. It's even stranger that these complaints are getting made at all since they're cats.

criticism is fine, but the moment is steps into personal insults, threats, etc. then that's obviously crossing the line and it's something i will never agree with. it's even worse when the person they're attacking is just a kid. i personally dont think the kid did anything wrong in the first place. also, i hope this poor kid stays away from twitter. if the comments on the vid itself are bad, then they're 100x worse on twitter

Cultural appropriation and portraying other cultures negatively and disrespectfully is indeed horrible, demeaning, and should be called out whenever it happens, but applying it to the smallest mistakes that were clearly intended not to be harmful or disrespectful, and then harassing a minor over it is just really unacceptable. Everyone getting angry over this supposed "cultural appropriation" needs to focus their time and energy on legitimate racism and disrespectful interpretations of other cultures, not a kid's animated cat video. It's so ridiculous. People taking "respecting others' cultures" to this extreme are really no better than the ones who purposely disrespect culture imo.

This whole cancel culture thing has gotten out of hand. Next thing you know, you'll be canceled for breathing the wrong way. I saw some comments saying they are trying to "educate" her, but damn, she doesn't need 93593853 people sending her hate comments to "educate" her. What do these people really think making someone feel absolutely terrible, a child no less, will solve?

It quite literally is just 14 year olds complaining. If you go on Twitter it’s full of it. Nowadays that's how it is unfortunately. A lot of younger fans are policing fandoms of all kinds, and doing horrible things they really have no business doing. All for the sake of "protecting and activism" when in actuality it's not at all. Death threats, doxing, harassments, it's quite disgusting to see how far a lot of them go. Which is why I'm not surprised by seeing situations like this again, I've seen it plenty of times before in other fandoms. And it's been building up for a few years now, and it's continuously getting worse.
