โณ THE WORLD
This roleplay takes place in Ancient Greece. It will be a fantasy that draws from elements of mythology and history, however no prior knowledge is necessary. The gods will be real for all intents and purposes, and they will make appearances throughout as they help the heroes on their journey. The main story, however, revolves around the heroes themselves who resemble those great heroes of old such as Achilles, Ajax, Odysseus, Theseus, etc. These men (and women) are beloved by the gods for their fighting prowess which is why they have been called upon to save the island of Chios.
For the purposes of the roleplay, we will pretend that ancient greece is slightly less misogynistic than in reality. Female warriors will be allowed, but they will be less common than their male counterparts, similar to the Amazons or to followers of Artemis. Also keep in mind that all mythological elements (prophecy, divine intervention, mythical beasts) will also be fair game.
The heroes come from all across Greece, so if you feel like delving into the politics of your hero's origin polis/region then that's great! For example, a Spartan hero might have more notions of militarism compared to an Athenian citizen who might be more interested in thought/science. However don't feel obligated to do research. It's also perfectly fine to fabricate your own historical background.
โณ CHIOS
Chios is a rather large island in Greece which for the purposes of this roleplay will be mostly forested farmland and small villages. The story will take place during late autumn, when the leaves are golden and the air is temperate. The main city shares its name with the island and it is where most of the population resides. The island, as with much of Greece, is rather mountainous which means there are several different biomes despite it being a relatively small geographic area.

โณ EXPECTATIONS
โง Literacy This is a semi-advanced to advanced roleplay. Posts will be several paragraphs long. Proper grammar and spelling are encouraged (though obviously mistakes are to be expected). โง Activity Please only join if you anticipate being able to actually roleplay for a sustained period of time. I know how 2020 is, and I know roleplays fizzle out sometimes, but it's not fun when people claim a spot and then disappear. Just let us know so we can free up your spot if you plan on leaving, please c: โง WCRP rules Please follow them. โง Realism Yes, this is a mythological, fantasy roleplay, however characters and motivations should be realistic for the world they live in. Heroes will all be physically strong, for example, because they are warriors. โง Creativity On the flipside of that, please be creative! No need to ask my permission on every idea. I love it when people give their characters complex histories and personal lives. All things are on the table in terms of what is possible, within reason, just don't make your character too OP because they are still mortals (ei, no superpowers).

โณ THE HEROES
To keep the main characters diverse, we will be using slots. The brief blurb should give you a framework to work with in creating your character, but beyond that they are entirely yours to create. The heroes will be like the heroes of old in that they will typically have a unique origin story, and they will all be beloved by at least one god. They can have divine heritage, or they can be related to other mythological figures (you could, if you wanted to, have a fictional son of Odysseus or something like that). All of the heroes will possess weaponry or armor that make them stand out as well, some with particular abilities.

โณ SIDE CHARACTERS
Side characters are also welcome! They can range from residents of Chios to diplomats to travelers to family members of the heroes. Make as many as you like, but keep in mind that the main story will revolve around the heroes themselves so we'll have to find a way to integrate side characters into the plot.

After reading everything through on the front page, you're free to join! The character page is linked below, and that's where all of the information about characters will be stored. I'm not going to add forms to the main page because I want people to be able to work on them at their own pace and add to them if needed. XENION The sun glided slowly behind the golden leaves, casting a brilliant light onto the forest floor. It was a quiet morning. No birds sang. Even the slender-legged deer which typically roamed there were nowhere to be seen. To an untrained eye, nothing was unusual. It could easily have been mistaken for peaceful.
But the silence was broken as a horse thundered along the road, scattering leaves in his wake. He was a young horse, a stallion bred for speed. His gleaming coat was the color of polished mahogany, and on his back was an equally resplendent rider: The young man was not from these parts. This much was clear to the villagers and farmers, who paused in their work as he rode past. His golden armor was brighter than anything they owned, save for broken rakes and rusting mirrors. His limbs were toned and healthy while theirs were slender and weathered. They watched him ride past, some with stoic faces and others flicking their eyes up to the gods. This boy, who was not from these parts, was their last hope. His shining armor and tall stallion seemed a promise ripe for breaking, but they hoped nonetheless. And when the thundering of rooves grew quiet, they returned solemnly to their work.
The riderโs name was Xenion. It was a name known all around Greece, though the stories surrounding him were only ever half-true.
He rode his horse through the small farming hamlets of Chios up the main road, which winded like a snake to the Temple of Artemis. It was a small sanctuary, nothing more than a small stone border around the single structure. No buildings for feasting, nor rich treasuries full of offerings. The villagers left what they could afford: perishable goods and the occasional figurine. Though it was not a wealthy temple, there was a build-up of offerings. Xenion jumped stiffly down from his steed and tossed the reigns back over the bowed neck. โLooks like weโre the first ones here. Go ahead and graze, then,โ he muttered in the hushed way men speak to their horses. The stallion needed no more instruction. Before his master had finished speaking, he was ripping up sprigs of grass.
Xenionโs sandals clicked on the smooth limestone steps as he climbed up to the temple.
He did not walk inside. Instead, he grunted and stretched out his riding-sore legs. He pulled off his maned helmet to reveal shoulder-length brown hair and a neutral expression. He placed the helmet on the temple steps then sat himself down. His silt-colored eyes were unbothered by the overbearing Greek sun. They lazily drifted around his surroundings, taking in the distant blue ocean, the autumn hills, and the small sanctuary in which he stood. They paused only as they fell upon the cult statue: proud Artemis, body poised to loose a notched arrow.
A sharp gasp alerted him to the fact that he was not alone. His hand reached instinctively for the javelin on his back, but he lowered it when he realized it was only a young priestess. When he looked back at her, her cheeks flushed with color and she retreated back into the cover of the temple. Xenionโs expression remained unchanged as he sat back on his elbows and heard the priestessโs bare footsteps patter away. He was an unexpected visitor, one easily mistaken for a poorly disguised god. But the blood that pumped through his veins was as red as any manโs.

IO
For a time, Io took solace in the silence of the world around her, which seemingly had yet to shake off the last caress of the night. The sun was gradually rising, casting its golden glow on the world down below. A small part of Io grieved the passing of the night, for it was in the cloak of darkness that she felt most at ease. It was also there, when the sky was decorated with the shine of stars and the moon had taken the place of the sun, that Io felt the closest to her mother. Sometimes sheโd talk to the night, as though she expected it o talk back. It never did, however; the gods seemed to rarely involve themselves in the affairs of mortals, even if the mortals were their children.
Io let her gaze drift across the landscape around her, noting the rather odd absence of any sort of wildlife. While she didnโt necessarily expect to see any sort of game animals this close to civilization โ as she could see Chios in the distance, with the rooftops of the buildings breaking the almost straight line of the horizon โ she could hear no birdsong, no skittering of tiny feet along the leaves of the ground. While sheโd expected the land to be unsettled, considering the circumstances, she hadnโt thought it would be so dire. She frowned, pursing her lips together as she continued to study the landscape.
Her horse moved along at a swift trot, hooves thudding at an even pace along the surface of the road. The animalโs coat was a dark gray, dappled with splotches of black. Her stance was proud, neck curved so that her mane seemed to sway about in the wind. Swiftly, the pair approached their destination; the village proper closed around them. In her periphery she saw several people stop to watch her pass, staring openly at the stranger. She could almost feel their gazes burning into her skin, but that wasnโt unusual. With her skin as pale as can be and hair as black as night, she was quite a strange sight in the sunny, oceanic landscape of the Mediterranean.
After parading through the village, giving the denizens quite the show, Io finally saw her true destination before her: the temple of Artemis. The marbled, stark white stone seemed to shine with an ethereal quality in the rising sun, making it seem as though Artemis herself was within the temple. That was doubtful, but the sentiment was lovely, nonetheless.
Swiftly, Io swung herself out of the saddle, resting her hand on the neck of her mare. Nearby was another horse, still saddled, grazing about. Io gave her mare a pat on the neck, and stepped away; the animal moved towards the other horse, bending her nose forward to start tearing at the graze with her teeth.
Io turned, and, releasing a soft sigh, ascended the steps to enter the templeโs interior, but she froze before sheโd made it up even three steps. There was another person already here; in stark contrast to Io - though he faced away from her - he seemed to radiate a golden aura, enhanced by the stunning golden armor he wore. Io frowned; sheโd been hoping she was the only one to answer the call for help, but it seemed that the fates were against her in this. She sighed and waited for him to notice her presence.

XENION Waiting was not something that bothered Xenion. He did it often, as he was not a king or a warlord, and it was often his role to wait around for instructions. In this case, he was glad for the momentary peace and quiet. He was experienced enough to know that tougher times were ahead. And once he defeated this foe, he would be on to fight in the next war or slay the next beast. Such was the life of a hero.
Eventually he stood and picked an apple off a nearby tree. It was small and a bit mealy, but he was hungry from his journey. He munched on it as he walked back up the steps of the temple and stepped inside. The priestess from before was nowhere to be found, and the silence of the small structure was rather eerie. Candles were lit at the base of the cult statue: a seated depiction of a stoic Artemis. At her feet were a number of dedications. Xenion walked closer and scanned the items as if looking for clues. Indeed a lot could be learned about a place by how they honored their gods. The votive offerings here were not impressive in terms of wealth: carved wooden figurines, animal bones, wilting flowers. One caught his eye, however: a little doll made from scraps of fabric. Clearly the object had been loved, for it was flimsy and torn. Had it belonged to a child? His eyes narrowed as he noticed a drop of what looked like blood on the little torn skirt. The dark spot was soaked into the thick fibres, but it was red enough still that he judged it to be only a few days old.
The soft sound at his back broke his concentration. He straightened and looked back to see a woman. The silver of her armor shone like glass in the morning sun, and hair like ink pooled around her shoulders. This was no priestess.
โMalaka,โ cursed Xenion. So it seemed he would be sharing his commission. He walked over to the young woman, whose pale skin meant she either rarely left the house or she was the offspring of some moon goddess. The latter seemed more likely, given her striking pale eyes. She was unlike any mortal woman he had ever seen.
โI supposed I should have known others would answer Chiosโ call to arms.โ He had stopped but a few feet in front of her. He propped his shoulder against one of the wooden columns as he scanned her from head to toe. Well, she certainly had nice armor. And the hilt at her hip was decorated in an elaborate pattern. Wealthy or favored by the gods? Likely both. Of course he was one to know the signs of a demigod. He wondered if his godly father watched him now. The beams of golden sun across the floor seemed to answer affirmatively.
โWell, we should hit the road before all of Greeceโs mercenaries come sniffing after our prize,โ he proposed gruffly. He extended his hand to the woman to shake and added, โNameโs Xenion. And you, let me guessโฆโ He paused, dark eyes examining her face unapologetically before saying, โAttendant of the Hunter Goddess? Daughter of Hecate?โ He purposefully omitted the most likely candidate: Nyx, to antagonize her.
Then he gave her a split second to answer before abandoning his column and descending the temple steps. They could talk and ride at the same time. Besides, if other heroes were about to arrive at Chios, he wanted to be the first to take stock of the situation. His plan before the girl arrived had been to gather clues and testimony of the townspeople, but he abandoned that plan now. He needed to move quickly if he wanted that commission for himself. He released a sharp whistle and watched as his horseโs head bobbed up. The bay stallion tossed his mane in annoyance but promptly trotted over to his waiting master.

Enyo
The ride had been long but it had been about a day since the seemingly forever tired woman had arrived in Chios. She taken her time, looking around at the damages that'd been done. Honestly she'd been waiting for something else to come rip something apart so she could finally have some fun. But, that didn't seem to be in the stars for her right now. Come on why had she been called if there wasn't going to be any fun. Her arms stretched over her head as she yawned each muscle flexing showing just how strong the small girl was. Her eyes drooped as she looked at her horse she'd traveled with. Talis, her favorite horse her father had, a big deep brown horse with a white mane he was beautiful and very strong. Of course he was a big baby right now and was bugging her to give him the food she had in her hand. She glared at him as he pushed her hard ruining her stretch. "Come on you big brute I just fed you!" She folded her arms across her chest frowning as he continued to try and get the food from her.
Eventually after realizing her arms weren't long enough to keep the food out of his reach she gave it to him. Sighing she rubbed her temples. "You know we are going to run out of MY food by the time this trip is up. You can eat grass you know." The woman pushed the horses head gently. Her arms wrapped around the horse and she pulled herself up with a big of struggle. Usually she had a running start or Talis lowered himself a bit to help her. But not this time, the brat. Along the way she'd heard this had something to with the gods, main Artemis, but this was just gossip. Of course that didn't mean that the temple wasn't going to be a good place to start. So that was where she was headed. Slowly.
It didn't take long for the temple to come into sight, and it took even less time for her eyes to fall on the two people who had already shown up there. Well that was no fun. She wasn't going to be fighting this alone? The money didn't matter she had plenty of that back home in Sparta, it was the thrill of battle she looked forward to. Another scar to brag about, more fun to have. How much information did they have. She'd asked around a bit but if she was being honest it had gone in one ear and out the other, they had been so boring, something about Artemis and big beasts that caused lots of damage. That was all she'd gotten. How drab. She pulled Talis to a stop a relatively good distance from the other two. Her face read as bored and uninterested, she didn't know them, but the girl's armor was interesting. Something about it made her stare for a minute.
Her horse shaking himself out brought her back from her thoughts of scratching images into her armor and back to the two in front of her. "So, it is safe to assume I'm not the only one who rode all the way from some far off place to answer the call? Well I've been here about a day and so far nothings showed up. Kind of boring if ya ask me. " For a moment she paused looking them over again, this time not awkwardly staring, "What's the deal with you two." The girl leaned on her horse speaking dryly and with very little tact. She didn't have time for that.

IO
It took the other person a few moments to realize that Io was standing nearby, so silent was she. She stood as still as a great tree, barely moving a muscle as her silver eyes studied her unknowing companion. The man was finely built, with a stature that spoke clearly of a lifetime of battle; he practically towered over Ioโs much smaller, lither frame. His skin was bronzed, kissed by the sunโs light, and taken together with his golden armor, he made quite the sight. Ioโs silver-blue eyes studied his armor for a moment; it was expertly crafted, and exquisitely decorated. There was the scene of what Io guessed was Helios, pulling the sun across the sky along with his great serpentine chariot. Io narrowed her eyes at that. Either he was the offspring of Helios or had earned the sun-godโs favor somehow.
His hair was a warm brown, darker close to his scalp, before it lightened to a shade like maple. She pursed her lips. Although she hadnโt seen his face yet, sheโd be willing to bet he was attractive. Most children of the gods were, as though their mythical parentage gave them some level of supernatural allure. Finally, after what seemed like forever, the man turned, and spotted Io. She watched, vaguely bemused, as first shock and then despair flickered across his expression. He bit out a soft curse and walked towards Io, although his posturing was anything but welcoming or kind. In fact, he seemed rather annoyed that she was there โ not that she blamed him. She was irritated to find him there, so she could only imagine what he was feeling. When he was a few feet away he stopped and glared down at her. They were quite the sight; his height seemed to dwarf her to a far greater degree than sheโd have expected. He leaned against a nearby wooden column and seemed to inspect her, gaze drifting over her form. She met his stare with her own, expression bored, and quirked one eyebrow.
โI suppose I should have known others would answer Chiosโ call to arms.โ He sounded like a petulant child. Io almost chuckled at that. โWell, we should hit the road before all of Greeceโs mercenaries come sniffing after out prize.โ He extended his hand in a greeting, and Io returned the gesture, sliding her much-smaller hand into his for the handshake before she pulled her arm back to her side. โNameโs Xenion,โ he told her. Io furrowed her brow slightly in recognition, but did not immediately speak โAnd you, let me guessโฆโ he trailed off for a moment, before continuing. โAttendant of the Hunter Goddess? Daughter of Hecate?โ
โAmong others,โ Io responded, voice cool. He left the temple shortly thereafter and headed for the small clearing where Ioโs mare โ and presumably his stallion โ were still grazing. Xenion called to his stallion, and the beast trotted over to him. Io moved towards her mare, running her fingers along the animalโs neck as a greeting. The horse flicked an ear and lifted her head, turning to nuzzle Io with affection.
Their quiet moment was broken by the sound of more hoofbeats thudding along the dirt. Almost imperceptive, Io tensed, her right hand moving swiftly, and steadily, across the saddle before her to where her favored weapon โ her bow. She curled her fingers around the grip, but did not draw it before whoever was approaching spoke. Io slid her gaze towards the new rider โ another female - silver-blue eyes flashing.
โSo, is it safe to assume Iโm not the only one who rode all the way from some far of place to answer the call? Well, Iโve been here about a day, and so far nothingโs showed up. โKind of boring, if you ask me.โ The girl glanced between Io and Xenion again. โWhatโs the deal with you two?โ
โNothing,โ Io said, voice flat and almost emotionless. She forced her body to relax, taking several deep breaths, focusing on uncurling her fingers from her bow one at a time, with each exhale. โWe were just going to scout.โ

XENION Xenion jumped easily onto his horseโs back and gave the creature a light pat on his sturdy neck. The stallion stomped his hooves against the gravel in excitement. That was the best thing about war horses--they were always prepared to go charging into danger. And that was exactly what Xenion intended to do. The day was young enough yet, and perhaps this heroine might prove useful after all. He looked down the winding road, expecting to find it empty as it had been on his ride up. But there was another rider approaching. The hero huffed softly under his breath, then gestured in welcome. The approaching rider was another woman. This one had hair of red, which matched their autumnal surroundings. Her armor was the first thing he noticed, bronze and leather. They betrayed her homeland instantly--Sparta.
It was no secret that Xenion viewed all poleis as an enemy to Corinth. To his mind, his loyalty lay with his family and his city. Everyone else was either a means to an end or an opponent. No state did he dislike more than Athens, but Sparta was a close second. Even still, he made no comment. This woman was a hero just as he was, and for the purposes of this adventure, they were all merely individuals.
โSo, is it safe to assume Iโm not the only one who rode all the way from some far off place to answer the call? Well, Iโve been here about a day, and so far nothingโs shown up. Kind of boring, if you ask me,โ the woman had a brasher, friendlier voice than the ebony-haired girl who now sat atop her own horse.
Xenion gave his stallion a light kick on the side to spur him forward. The steed obliged without complaint and they trotted down to meet the female warrior.
โWhatโs with you two?โ she asked as they approached.
โNothing,โ responded Io before Xenion had even registered the question. A half-smile pulled at his lips as he glanced over at her. Thatโs a thorny response. The ebony-haired womanโs face looked on stoically and he decided not to antagonize her another time. As if realizing she had been blunt, she added a bit softer, โWe were just going to scout.โ
Xenion wrestled with the reins of his horse, who danced anxiously at having stopped. โWell, if things are uneventful close to town, we should head into the forest. No point in waiting for something to happen.โ His gaze tracked unconsciously toward the woods. โYou two can do as you please, but Iโm ready to go now.โ With that, he eased up on the reins and his stallion pranced forward. "Xenion, Io," he announced as an afterthought.
It was only a matter of seconds before he heard the sound of hoofbeats following behind. Xenion set a quick pace, allowing his horse to canter as they made their way back down the hill. When they reached the ravine below, the road split off in two directions: the direction they had all come from the town, and a smaller trail which curved off into the forest. The stallion charged along the second of the two, the path leading into the darkness of the trees. Only once they had reached level ground did Xenion pull back and allow the women to catch up. Their path led them into a shadowed canyon lined with hunched trees that blocked out the golden rays of the sun. Xenion directed his horse to walk along the side of the path so they could all ride in-step and talk at the same time. He had not planned on making friends, but it would be stupid not to work together if this threat was as enormous as the townsfolk made it seem.
โSee those stumps up there?โ asked the man, who gestured to the ridge-line up ahead. There was a break in the trees where some of them had toppled over, their trunks splintered in two. โWhatever did that must have been pretty big.โ The look in his eye was unphased. This was a man who had been to war, who had stood in a wall of shields as thousands of men charged at him with spears. Broken trees did not scare him, but he was rational enough not to look pleased either.
"What do you two think? Shall we take a closer look?"

Enyo
A short and to the point bunch huh?
"Nothing." The woman had spoken first, dry, not very welcoming but that was to be expected right? You never knew who you could trust and it wasn't like they were here on the best circumstances either. Thankfully that wasn't where she'd stopped, Enyo would have hated to already be bored out of her mind. Her brown eyes rested on her for a moment before the Adonis of a man spoke up responding to her comment, the woods, that would have been a better place to start. Why hadn't she thought of that.
As he introduced himself and the women her eyes examined both of them. They were stunning and the stark contrast between them was even more surprising. Xenion. Tall, lean blessed by some godly beauty, or some really good bath water. He was huge too, if he'd stood next to her horse he'd easily be taller than him. He was the opitome of tall dark and handsome and good god's was his armor made of gold? There was no doubt in her mind that he was the son of a god. Or so really rich lord, but even then the way the armor shone wasn't that of the mortal realm. Now the woman was like night itself, dark hair like the sky and skin like the glow of the stars. She had to be a god's kid too. Interesting. Her armor was even more interesting, the color was beautiful and the carvings even more so. Now that she thought about it, she'd heard of her at one point. Which god was her parent? Nyx? That felt right, whether it was or not she didn't really care, if they were going to travel together she'd find out sooner or later. Plus that was who was on her armor so she assumed her guess was correct. "Enyo." She said watching as he started to leave, for a moment she wondered if she should even join them.
Deciding it might be worth while she pat her horse and followed after both strangers. These monsters whatever they were had the size to tear down buildings and while she was confident in her skills she wasn't too sure she'd be able to handle this one by herself. She followed in silence, just trying to get a feel of the two before her. But there wasn't much time for that as Xenion picked up the speed. Eager to get there it seemed.
As they arrived Enyo's eyes widened a bit, a whole line of trees, just toppled over and split. Whatever hit those was a threat even if it had been mild mannered. It didn't scare her but it was surprising to see so much damage in one spot, what had the people done to anger the gods like this. "A closer look would be good, might be able to figure out what kind of beast we are dealing with." The red-haired woman pet her horse who didn't seem too happy noticing the fallen trees. "It'll give us direction too, something that size has got to have more tracks to follow than just that. We don't know how long those tree have been down either, so we should be on guard."

IO
Ioโs irritation was lessened a bit when the newcomer didnโt engage in conversation. She wasnโt in the mood to socialize, and would honestly rather leave this entire job far behind her. She needed neither the money nor the prestige, but her father had begged her. Pleaded with her to accept the contract. Crete was in a bit of a hard place โ at least the royal family โ and was in desperate need of the gold that the successful rescue of Chios would bring. Her father would be annoyed that the reward would have to be split, but heโd be even more furious if Io backed out of her agreement. Because of that, much of her current irritation was directed to her father, although some of it was still sourced by the two others surrounding her.
Xenion began to speak again, drawing Ioโs attention. โWell, if things are uneventful close to town, we should head into the forest. No point in waiting for something to happen.โ He glanced towards the forest that was at the heart of Chiosโ problems. He lifted himself almost effortlessly into the saddle of his stallion; the beast danced about nervously for a moment. Silently, Io followed suit, hooking her right hand onto the front of her mareโs saddle to lift herself up. She settled down, wrapped the reins around one hand, and then turned back to the other two. โYou two can do as you please, but I am ready to go now.โ Before his stallion galloped off, he added, โXenion, Io.โ The latter rolled her eyes and pressed her heels into her mareโs flanks; the horse started forward into a steady lope after the golden-armored demigod. The trio โ which became as such when Io heard the newcomerโs horse trot after them โ traveled in silence (which was only broken when the newcomer introduced herself as Enyo, to which Io snorted to herself, figuring the name of โwaspโ fit the girl) for a time before the reached their destination. Xenion directed his horse down the path that curved into the forest, pulling the animal to a slower walk. Io and Enyo followed suit.
โSee those stumps up there?โ he asked, gesturing towards something before them. Io turned her gaze in the direction indicated and felt her heart sink. There, in the peace of the forest, was a blemish โ a black, shattered hole where one should not be. Numerous trees had been violently felled, their trunks splintering as they toppled down. The ragged stumps left behind were clear evidence that some large, and reckless, had trampled through. The smell of sap in the air let Io know it was relatively recent, too. Probably occurred last night, if she had to guess. โShould we take a closer look?โ Xenion continued.
โA closer look would be good, might be able to figure out what kind of beast we are dealing with,โ Enyo replied. โItโll give us direction too; something that size has to have more tracks to follow than just that. We donโt know how long those trees have been down either, so we should be on guard.โ
Io agreed, although she didnโt speak. Instead, she pulled her mare to a stop and slid out of the saddle, removing her bow and extra quiver from its storage spot. On lithe feet she made her way towards the tree-line. Once there, she was again struck by the destruction. The tree trunks werenโt just felled โ they were mauled, with deep, long gauges running through the bark. The ground was also torn up, leaves and bark and branches scattered about. She paused when something caught her eye, and moved closer for a better look.
It was a track โ that was clear โ but Io was nearly dumbfounded by the size of it. She stared at the pawprint that wasnโt dissimilar from her own, with a wide palm-like mark, topped off by five smaller divots in the soil. It was a bear track, she realized. The claws on the bear were what really unsettled Io; from the track alone, it was clear the bear was sporting a set of claws that were at the very least a foot in length. She breathed a curse and reached for her bow just before the world began to shudder.
Something big was approaching; the snapping of tree limbs and thundering along the ground made that much clear. She heard another sound, too; it was a popping noise, but Io knew it for what it was. A warning sound made by bears.
The forest burst away in an explosion of wood; Io narrowly managed to dodge a paw that was as large as her slamming into the mud next to her as the truly massive bear, with a coat as black as night, bellowed its rabid rage.

XENION Xenion slid off his horse once they reached the ridge. The ground was littered with fallen leaves and debris from which the barbs of broken trees rose like jagged teeth. His footsteps crunched loudly as he walked over to examine one of the trunks. At his back, he heard Io and Enyo dismount as well. Xenion glanced up over the top of the ridge, which was empty but for a stretch of similar looking land. Then he knelt before the nearest trunk to examine it more closely.
He was not much of a tracker. That work he typically left to others, but the evidence before him was not difficult to read. The tree had been broken violently and suddenly. There was no clean cut like there would have been with an axe, just jagged splinters many inches in length. He brushed his fingertips against the shattered wood. It gave slightly at the touch, which meant it was still fresh; he guessed within the last day or two. He placed his javelin on the ground as he noticed something further down the tree trunk--claw marks. They ran down the entire back of the tree, each mark as thick as three fingers together.
Just as he reached out to touch them, he heard a commotion at his back. His head whipped around just in time to Io reeling backwards. A massive clawed paw swiped at her with enough force to send leaves flying from the ground. Xenionโs eyes widened as he took in the sheer size of the beast. It was even larger than he had imagined in his head. Its bristled back nearly touched the tops of the nearby trees. Its enormous jaws opened into a loud bellow that shook the very ground below his feet. And then it coiled its heavy body and redoubled its attack on Io.
Instinctively, Xenion reached for his javelin without having to look at it. The weight of it was familiar in his palm, and he lightly tossed it in a practiced motion to get his hand in the right position. As the bear charged, footfalls like earthquakes, Xenion through the dory with all his force. It sliced through the air with fine precision and embedded itself with a thump in the bearโs left shoulder.
The shot was a good one, but it was by no means deadly. It was the equivalent of an arrow in the side of a whale. But it was effective in one thing: getting the bear to swing its ugly head in Xenionโs direction. The beastโs jowls wobbled and dripped with saliva as he searched for what had caused the sharp pain in its hide. The golden armor must have been easy to spot, for its red eyes landed firmly on him. They were the wildest eyes he had ever seen, unquestioning, sharp, and angry. It was in that instant that Xenion questioned whether he had done the right thing by throwing away his most valuable weapon to save a girl heโd only met that day.
But now was not the time to reexamine his lifeโs choices. A bear the size of a warship was barrelling toward him, shaking the forest with every cursed step.

Enyo
It didn't take them long to go check things out at all, in fact the other two seemed just as eager as she did to go find something fun. She followed quietly and mimicked the others leaving her horse away from the place they really needed to be in case. The black stallion didn't spook easy but that didn't mean whatever tore apart the trees wasn't going to rip the poor horse apart if it was in the way. Enyo cared about Talis far too much to have something happen to him.
Her eyes scanned over everything, claw marks bigger than she was and tracks to match. Gods this thing was huge, looked like a bear or something similar, but bears didn't get this big. For a moment she just stood there shocked. It seemed like her now traveling companions were in the same boat, just sort of absorbing everything. Delicately she ran her fingers over a fallen tree, the way the trunk had fallen it seemed as if the bear had retreated back into the woods.
Her head whipped around as she heard the thundering of paws as the beast burst out and headed straight for Io. The Spartan again just stared for a moment, she'd never seen an animal so big before. Enyo blinked and shook her head, now was not the time to be shocked by the bear's size but time for some action. No wonder she'd waited around for nothing, the bear was in the woods. Of course it was, that is where animals lived right? Though if she was being honest with herself she'd have never been able to take this thing on her own.
It was then that her eyes followed an expertly thrown spear that made it's way right into the mammoth beast's shoulder. Nice aim. Quickly her hands reached for her staff that was wrapped up in thick black cloth on her back. As the fabric started to loosen a bright glow peeked from beneath it. "Close your eyes!" The girl yelled as the fabric fell to the floor. She was on the same side as the bears head and without his weapon Xenion was already in pretty bad shape with that huge thing coming at him. The staff gave off a light the seemed as bright as the sun itself for a moment. It lasted a split second before it was dulled to a dim glow but it was enough to startle and slightly disorient the bear who was still adjusting to the light of day in general. "Hey big guy! Its not nice to pick on people without weapons!" She called an overly excited grin spreading across her face like a child being given a new toy.
Heat seemed to radiate off the staff, the surrounding air waving like stone beaten by the hot summers sun. As she let it touch the floor the leaf it had been set on burned from the center out. "Last time a checked bears aren't really heat resistant." The staff grew warm in her hands, it was strongest when the sun was out so it stung a little but nothing she couldn't ignore and fix later. Enyo hoped the light and her loud yelling was enough to get the bear to focus on her so Xenion could either get his weapon back or Io could let loose a few well places arrows. On an animal that big she wasn't sure if she'd land a blow or be able to hold it long enough to really burn.

IO
When the bearโs massive paw struck earth, the ground shook with such force that Io bit the edge of her tongue, and the coppery, tangy taste of blood filled her mouth. Sheโd barely managed to avoid the bear, and when it lifted its paw again, the ground was gouged deeply where its claws had struck. It let out another ear-shattering roar, jerking to its side as though something had struck it. Io blinked, and then focused on the golden spear now jutting out of the beastโs flank, and her eyes flicked towards Xavier. Gratitude bloomed through her for a moment, but her attention was drawn again as the bear reared up on its hind legs, popping its jaws and roaring. Its jaws were coated in foam and spittle, and there was a wild, unhinged, rabid look in its black eyes. It swatted at the air, and took a lumbering step in Xavierโs direction.
โClose your eyes!โ someone yelled โ Enyo? โ and reflexively Io obeyed, just before a light so bright it turned her vision white behind her eye lids washed across her awareness. Once it had faded, she opened her eyes again and saw the other woman wielding a glowing staff, shouting taunts at the bear. The bear screeched its rage again and dropped on its four feet, breaking into a charge in Enyoโs direction. Io cursed. In a smooth movement she reached behind her, grabbed several arrows, and nocked them onto her bow. In another movement, she lifted her bow, sighted and fired. The arrows arced through the air with a whistling noise, before they embedded themselves into the bearโs shoulder. It howled and skidded to a stop, spinning to slam its paws on the ground again. It sent several pieces of wood flying, and an idea bloomed within Ioโs mind.
โDistract it!โ she cried to her companions. She didnโt wait to see if they obliged, instead choosing to trust them. She whirled and raced towards the tree line, looping her bow over her shoulder as she did so, eyes scanning the land in front of her. There! A massive, felled trunk was lodged between several others, and looked as sturdy as she needed it to be. She glanced around again, and spotted what she needed. A large, splintered branch with a wickedly sharp point. She lifted the branch, groaning with the effort, and began to drag it towards the felled trees. It was difficult, backbreaking work, and she doubted sheโd accomplish it if it werenโt for the adrenaline flooding her system and the divine blood that raced through her veins. She shut out the sounds of Xenion, Enyo and the bear, and prayed that they werenโt dead. Finally, she managed to position the branch where it needed to be and slammed her shoulder into the side of it several times, wedging and lodging it between two of the stump. With her trap set, Io turned to lure her prey.
She withdrew her bow again, nocked an arrow and fired, striking the bear in the muzzle. It howled in pain, whipping its head around to fix its glare on Io. โCome on!โ she yelled at it, firing another arrow that sliced through its ear. It screeched and began to charge her, paws thudding on the ground. Io spun on her heel and fled, charging for her trap. She sent a prayer to her mother, pleading for her idea to work. At the last instant, when she could feel the bearโs hot breath against her back, when she could smell the scent of death that clung to its skin, she leapt and scampered over the trap. The bear slashed out one paw and managed to clip Io with the end of one claw, but it couldnโt stop in time.
It slammed into the makeshift spear with the force and momentum of a falling star. The spear thrust through the bearโs chest, emerging from its back; the bear lurched forward and toppled over the top of the fallen trees, tumbling along for several feet before it skidded to a stop. The bearโs form quivered for a moment, before it finally died, releasing a long, rasping, rattling sigh before it went still.
Io pushed herself to her feet, panting. She inspected where the bear had managed to lay a claw on her, but her armor had done its job well, and she had taken nothing more than several bruises. She climbed over the trap, dropping down to land on her feet. She brushed herself off, and then glanced upward, searching for Xenion and Enyo.
