Isabella is going to freak. Leon will either fall back in the water/do something stupid. Zahavi is a little moth prove me wrong.
So we are in an agreeance, that’s great.)

[ i undoubtedly agree to this b/c of obvious reasons
also, i'm playing around with the idea that the fire within him is like... okay how do i explain this without sounding crazy. Sentient? It's a part of him, definitely, but because emotions are so deeply connected to magic(in Zach's case, at least), it's almost as if the fire has a mind of its own- when in actuality this is just a part of him that he has suppressed.
You might've noted already that he has never actually "controlled" it, but rather just subdued the flames within himself. Right now, his energy source pertaining to pyrokinesis is fear. Fear of the past. Fear of the future. Fear of himself. And throughout the roleplay, I see it as part of his arc to transfer to a new source emotion. ]]

(It’s like that freaking fire spirit from Frozen II XD.
I will not apologize for that reference.
But I love the idea. I was thinking about the fire elemental, and how hard it’s going to be on Zach, and I was thinking about the others. And I was actually toying with the idea of the magic almost being a sentient part of them, but also not sentient. Essentially, that’s why people feared it, but people never knew that magic users couldn’t exactly control them. They ad to embrace it and I feel like that’s going to be a hard part of this journey for all of the the magic users.
Leon’s do stem, a bit, from her own fear, from herself. There’s...some deeper stuff there, actually, in regards to her powers. But in the same regard, it has a mind of it’s own. Restricting power only makes it harder to control, essentially. So things like dark magic(which is, essentially, what Leon’s destruction is) and more dangerous magic are heavily hard to control and hard to essentially gain.)
(Okay, but I’ll probably work on replies soon sorry if I’m falling behind.)

[ you're not wrong.
but yeah, and that's really interesting to think about when you take into account how actually counterproductive the laws of the land are. By outlawing magic, you are forcing some users to conceal what they are meant to embrace, thus making them unable to control their magical abilities and rendering them unsafe to others. But then it causes and endless cycle because those who have been forced to contain their magic(and who may have hurt others at some point in time) just make the general public fear them more. Which makes the law much more unlikely to be lifted. :///
that's just sad to think about oof ]]

Isabella had started to follow Leon without objection. She had wanted to object, wanted to offer to lead the way instead, but to be frank she had no reason why she would be better to lead the group through the darkness. It was clear that Leon was the better choice for this. And when she really thought about it, Isabella was eager for adventure, but honestly she wasn’t that eager that she wanted to lead the group into the unknown.
She’d only just started to head into the darkness when she heard Zach’s voice and turned to see him frozen near the river, a flame dancing above his palm.
Wait... a flame? What?
Isabella wasn’t ashamed to say she almost had a heart attack, physically startling and flattening herself against the cave wall for a moment as she stumbled. She had never seen magic before in her life, not to mention fire magic.
“I’m sorry, what?” she spluttered
She gestured to Zach and the flame before looking back at the rest of the group.
“I’m not the only one seeing this, right?” she asked “that’s magic.”
Okay, well that was stating the obvious a little bit, but she could be excused for that right now.
“What the hell...” she muttered to herself “okay, magic, illegal magic, that’s fine, this is all fine.”
Listen, she was all for adventure, but that was magic. Illegal magic. Fire magic. Which scared her a little bit because fire didn’t exactly give the impression of being safe, approachable magic. In terms of her first experience with magic, she hadn’t exactly been given a nice calm kind of magic to come across first.
Plus, she was very much a normal, non-magical human, and magic made her feel a little vulnerable. It was like a weapon she didn’t have. Though she knew the magic was useful and everything, some sort of her that had been conditioned to be afraid of magic made her see it as a threat. It just showed her that Zach had power that Isabella did not, and that if for some reason he turned that against her she wouldn’t be able to do anything about it.
She’d have to get over that and calm herself down, because that magic was exactly what the group needed right that that second.
[short but here’s your Isabella freak-out]

Zahavi didn’t feel great about letting Leon lead the group. Not out of any ill thoughts of her competency or ability to be in front, but rather that he worried immensely for her safety. Although she claimed to be artfully skilled at the task of jumping from rooftop to rooftop, anyone was capable of making a mistake, and the cave was pitch black. The obvious inability to see could cause even the most skilled of individuals to lose their footing and plummet to their death.
He trusted her, though, and that thought surprised him. At the beginning of this day, he wasn’t sure if he should, but now he had no doubts. Anyone willing to put themselves in this kind of danger for him and his parents was worthy of his trust.
Walking in the dark wasn’t so bad when he knew he wasn’t alone. He was happy to be here with people he knew wouldn’t stab him in the back, at least, and to not be wandering these caves on his lonesome. He was prepared to trot blindly after Leon when a speck of orange light appeared in his peripheral vision, when Zach’s voice called out to them.
The moment he turned his head, he was met with a bizarre but entrancing sight. Over the man’s palms, a tiny ball of fire flickered and waved, a living sphere of light. In the dark, it was almost as bright as the sun, and it hurt his eyes to stare at. Yet, even so, he couldn’t tear his gaze away.
That’s amazing, his brain supplied dumbly. What a bright flame.
Without even thinking about, he took two steps forward, then two more, drawn in by the light very much like a moth to flame. Eyes wide, face calm and enraptured by the sight of it. “Fascinating,” he breathed softly, almost inaudible, and leaned so close to the man’s palms that he very well might have set his hair on fire. “It’s fire.”
Isabella’s freak out wasn’t even enough to snap him out of his trance, as he only blinked and waved a hand in her direction. “It’s no concern if it’s illegal. Not to me,” he mumbled, incredibly distracted. “I didn’t know you could make fire! Look how pretty it is!”

“Very well,” Eldred said to Drusilla with a nod “I shall go with Zander and we’ll try and get a view of any potential entrances to the cave.”
He had hoped that the group would decide that searching for the lost group members was the best course of action. He didn’t think he could go on if they didn’t search for them, and he certainly couldn’t just assume Zahavi dead. Sure, assuming them dead and moving on would logically be the better choice but emotionally and morally he didn’t think he would have been able to live with it.
“Yes, nightfall at the latest,” he responded to Lyra “to search in the dark would be both dangerous, especially since this path is treacherous even in broad daylight, and pointless. We can resume the search in the morning if need be but for now this seems like the most sensible move.”
At her comment about being the kingdom’s hope if Zahavi was lost, Eldred have a dip of his head and broke eye contact with Lyra, unable to reply for a moment. He could not be the kingdom’s hope. Hope implied a future, of which he did not really have one. Even without his illness, he was old. He needed to pass on what he knew to people like Zahavi and the others, young people who did have a future and could be the hope for the kingdom.
“I am an advisor, a guide,” he said after a moment with a small smile “I do not lead, I am not meant to bring hope. That is for all of you to find in yourselves.”
But she was right. The kingdom needed people to look up to. It couldn’t be him. His companions, perhaps. Especially Zahavi, if he had survived. Eldred needed him and the others to have survived, otherwise was the price for this quest worth it?
Still, he looked to Zander, nodding towards the path they would take around the mountain, a separate part from the one Lyra and Drusilla would go on.
“Back by nightfall,” he reminded the girls
And with that, he turned, leading the way along the route he and Zander would take. Hopefully they would be able to see at least some sign of an entrance to the cave.
Plus, he supposed it wasn’t terrible that he had an opportunity to be alone with Zander. He was someone Eldred wanted to figure out a little more. He liked to know who he was travelling with.

Leon had continued walking, her almost lilac eyes narrowed, trying to find anything. Then she heard telltale voices behind her. She didn’t notice anyone around her, and she glared back in annoyance.
Then her eyes widened, and she floundered backwards. She had not expected to see fire. Not floating up, in the color of blue.
She lost her footing, immediately throwing her arms out to catch herself, her fingers skimming a few rocks near her, giving off a telltale crack, and sending a few rocks into the water. Though she righted herself, staring dumbfounded at the prince, then Zach.
Something pained crossed her face for a moment. Zach didn’t...trust her? He hadn’t told her about this. Though the rocks in the water reminded not her that she hid a lot too.
Still, it burned deep inside her head. He didn’t trust her, but he trusted himself in front of the prince. For some reason, that notion bothered her. She had no one to trust. They would hate her if she said anything. But the prince was all accepting and kind. If he was the prince, why hadn’t he lifted the ban...
Zahavi’s words floored her too, her eyes widened. She remembered overhearing something about it before, but he was coming out now, to his subjects, and defending magic.
Her eyes narrowed for a moment, forcing herself from the cave wall, wincing at the cracks she could spot due to the small flicker of the flame from behind her. Her fingertips, she realized, were stinging horribly. Sometimes, when she was a child, when this would happen, her skin would look an ashen color, almost like that of the dead. They felt old too, but they always were like that.
Destroying things hurt, not just from destroying them, but the pain it caused when she did it. A token, essentially. A bit of pain for the dangerous black magic that she never asked for.
Her mouth dropped open, staring at Zach though, dumbfounded. “I-uh-when?” Fire magic was extremely rare. Any type of dangerous, destructive magic was forbidden, even in many books from before the ban on magic. How had he ever had the time to learn it? Why hadn’t he used it before?
“That would have been...helpful.” Was all she commented, hiding her hands before her back, stepping closer, but remaining distant, “You look scared though, why?” She was blunt, though not overly rude. Her voice held her shiver, wavering slightly, as she fixed Zach with a look. It seemed she picked up him pretty well, his actions, that is, didn’t escape her, “Why did you use this before?”
Before, she was mentioning the heist, it could have served as a distraction. She had so many questions, but not so many answers, and no way to voice them all. She was just glad she wasn’t in the water again.

With that one simple choice, light had appeared within the cave. It came in the form of a delicate, sparkling blue flame, casting shadows into the darkness. For now, the swaying blaze of fire seemed calm, never wandering too far from Zach’s palms.
If there was anything Zach knew best, though, it was that even the smallest speck of flame could grow and spread, unremorsefully scorching whatever lay in its path. The brightness of the fire grew at the memory, and Zach actually had to look away for a bit, his eyes shocked by the sudden change in illumination.
He didn’t hear much of what Isabella had said in her shocked state, but a mumbled ‘illegal’ didn’t go unnoticed by Zach. The prince, however, was quick to brush off that fact. Actually, the prince seemed completely mesmerized by the flame, and his movements toward Zach made the young thief panic.
“Zahavi, no,” Zacharias said sternly, though his voice wavered in fear, “Don’t get too close, I…” He didn’t exactly want to express to the group that he had little to no control over the flame, but it was only right for them to know the truth.
Of course Leon had gone and figured out said truth before he could voice it, though. Her words - the ones about him being scared - were certainly evident. A panicked expression had stricken across his face, one that was no longer concealed by the blackness of the cavern.
“I-I can’t… quite... control it all that well,” He stammered, green eyes glistening in the blue flame as he locked gazes with Leon. He glanced towards Zahavi, who was taking another step forward, and a thought formed in his mind. One that lit up in direct response to Zahavi’s expression, which was that of complete wonder. The prince took a second step and Zacharias lowered his palms slightly. “I’ll dunk it if you get any closer.” He stated, noting how Zahavi’s face illustrated some sort of emotional connection to the flame.
Why didn’t you use this before?
The words stabbed into his gut, sending shivers throughout his figure. It wasn’t necessarily the question itself, but the ‘before’. Because that’s what this curse had done to him. It had split his life clean into two halves: Before and After.
Before consisted of joy and life. It was a time he barely remembered.
After consisted of death and pain. After was guided by fear and lived in each day. He would never be able to escape After. Never be able to go back and change things...
And while his eyes were locked on the young prince, the sphere of light began to grow and spark up menacingly. It had not taken kindly to the threat of being submerged. Just being ignited had been a taste of freedom for the young flame, and it wasn’t about to be locked up again so soon.
Not without a show.
The ball magnified without warning, and Zacharias yelped, stumbling backwards in shock. While the blue blaze grew to a roar of flames, he extended his arms in a feeble attempt to get the heat as far away from himself as possible. The last thing he could do was aim the fire upstream before it streaked through the cavern in a jet of cobalt, throwing light upon the walls of the cave and licking the high ceiling with its tips. The blaze had completely engulfed Zacharias’ hands at this point, and was spewing from them endlessly(although in actuality it must’ve only been a few seconds).
Just as quickly as it had started, the jetstream dissipated until nothing remained, plummeting the cave into darkness once more.
Zacharias stayed on the ground for a solid ten seconds, regaining his breath while his heart rate leveled out. He must’ve been screaming, because for some reason his vocal chords felt spent. All he could hope for was that the others hadn’t heard him over the roar of flames.
“Shit,” he exhaled with a laugh, bringing his warm hands to his head. That was the adrenaline rush of all adrenaline rushes right there. Yes, he had lost control, but no one had been hurt, and he felt… better, somehow. Lightheaded, yes, but something about releasing that amount of dormant energy had taken a weight off of his chest. “One second.” They needed light again, and he could do just the trick.
Zacharias sat back up and splayed his right hand, conjuring up his second ball of fire for the day. It grew and dwindled under his will, content with the display it had given not twenty seconds ago. Zach laughed, turning to face the rest of the group.
“Cool, huh?” He said, smirking out of delight. I did it.
But even in that short-lived moment, Zach couldn’t help but feel a tug at his heart. Guilt. He wouldn’t forgive himself for the past, and he certainly wasn’t about to forgive himself for losing control so quickly just then- endangering those around him.

"See you soon." Zander said to the two women. He looks back at Eldred and gives him a nod before setting out down the path. Spending some time with the old man would be interesting to say the least. Back at the castle, he had only spoken to him a handful of times.
"We will find them." Zander said turning his head to look at the older man. He needed to play his part and act like a concerned person. He hoped they wouldn't but oh well. "Those kids are tough and they will watch over each other." Granted, these were the same people who argued part of the way to the mountain over whether a cloud in the sky was shaped like a bird or not.

(Okay so I love these responses and will get replies up sometime soon while all you guys are asleep XD
But Eldred’s magic okay
Eldred doesn’t ‘do’ emotions, and that’s because he was angry when he killed his wife. That was a burst of pure uncontrolled energy, the magic that killed his wife. It threw her against the wall pretty hard so I suppose you could consider it telekinesis magic but basically it’s just pure magic. He’s worked pretty hard to try to stay as level-headed as possible, and to control his magic.
Before he got caught he the king and queen, he was trying so hard to hide his magic that it did at that point begin to equal suppression and start to get a little out of control, making it harder to find. It was at that time in his life that Eldred started to learn dark magic. Once he was caught and allowed to continue his magic he had a vent for it so his magic hasn’t had to be so suppressed and has developed from then in a more healthy way. But the death of his wife was absolutely pivotal in the journey of the development of his magic. Because it was at that point he started to fear himself a lot.)

Eldred led the way, picking his way carefully along the mountain path.
At Zander’s comment, Eldred raised an eyebrow. He didn’t quite think that tough was the right way to put it.
“Tough?” he replied with a snort “we are talking about Zahavi here, are we not?”
Tough was one word he would not use to describe the young prince. Eldred believed Zahavi was stronger than he seemed, far more resilient and determined. And maybe more of a leader than Zahavi himself thought he was.
“I hope they can take care of one another,” Eldred responded as they walked “but I have my doubts, which is the entire reason I’m here. I wouldn’t be on this godforsaken quest if I had any faith in their ability to not get themselves killed. And if I didn’t have a duty to the king and queen.”
He would do anything to protect this group, even if he wasn’t saying it in quite those words. Anyone who wanted to harm Zahavi or any of the others would have to go through Eldred, and he was far more than just an old man.
They were teenagers, on a dangerous quest. Even Leon, who knew about the dangers ahead of them, did she really realise what she was getting into? Knowing the dangers and understanding them was an entirely different thing.

When Zahavi said he couldn’t control the magic very well, that was just the icing on the cake for Isabella. She wasn’t sure this magic could get anymore dangerous.
She was afraid, but didn’t say anything more as she watched Zahavi approach. The sheer wonder in the prince’s eyes amazed the young woman. Had the prince seen magic before, but not often enough for it to lose its wonder? Or was it just that he was calmer, more adventurous, more open-minded than she? Neither seemed like a particularly satisfying answer. But the prince’s curiosity made Isabella take a hesitant step closer.
She moved a step backwards again when Zander lost control, the merchant shocked by the sudden jet of flame. But at the same time, the dancing display of cobalt filling the caves, licking its walls with flickering light, was kind of pretty. Scary, but pretty.
And even Isabella was surprised at her actions a moment later. When Zach lay on the ground and started to laugh, Isabella did too. A slightly nervous laugh, at first, that grew into genuine laughter. It was enough to have her feel comfortable stepping closer to Zach once again.
It didn’t seem so scary. Zach was just a boy, like any other boy. And he was laughing, expelling all that adrenaline and energy. There was nothing inherently different or frightening about him just because he had magic. Isabella couldn’t remember a time before magic was banned, before it was demonised and those who had it made out to be bad and dangerous. And her very first experience of magic had shown her that maybe people were wrong. Sure, the magic was dangerous sometimes, but it didn’t have to be.
She even smiled a little when Zach conjured a second flame.
“Okay, granted, it’s cool,” she conceded “but if anyone else here has magical powers I’d appreciate it if they give us a heads up before suddenly revealing them.”
The flame, though, was now a pretty welcome sight, illuminating the cave for the first time.
“Well, we have light and warmth,” Isabella pointed out “which is far better than we were doing two minutes ago.”
It definitely made her more hopeful of their chances of getting out of there. They could finally see the cave, could hopefully navigate their way out. Maybe, just maybe they’d manage to get out of here relatively unharmed.
(Oh, Isabella honey, little do you know most of the group has magic
This is short but I just wanted to get her caught up)

The warning not to get too close was in one ear and out the other, because this was the first and only time Zahavi had ever seen magic used in such a way. He hadn’t seen much magic in person, period, let alone something as fascinating as fire magic. The flame was so bright and such a vivid, unusual blue color, and it was unlike anything he had ever experienced in his young life. Wonderful and mesmerizing, something he thought he could find himself staring at for hours on end.
Only the threat of the man dunking the beautiful flame into the water was enough to get through his thick skull.
He clapped his hands against his own cheeks in slight horror. “No, you mustn’t do that! I’ll stay over here and admire the pretty fire from afar, I swear it on my life,” he insisted and to prove his point, took a couple steps back. He wasn’t quite sure why he was so obsessed with the sight of magic—and of this fire magic in particular, it seemed—but it could very well spark trouble for him in the future.
That was a very good question. Why hadn’t Zander used his magic before? It would have been incredibly helpful at that start of their treacherous cave adventure and it would certainly spare each of them from a tragic, unexpected death due to falling off a ledge.
His thoughts were interrupted by the sudden intensity of the flame as it shot away into the dark, narrowly missing any of them by a very small margin. Instinctively, he threw up his arms, though found that the danger passed rather quickly. In the silence that followed, his gaze tracked the lost fire until it inevitably went out, returning the rest of the cave to darkness aside from where they stood by Zach.
That was...intense.
Although he held no anger or accusations toward the fire-user for letting the flame get out of control. Zahavi knew absolutely nothing about controlling magic, fire related or not, and had no idea what developing control entailed. He couldn’t pass judgment when he had such little knowledge on the subject, that simply wouldn’t be fair or right.
“It is very cool,” he murmured, using the word that was rather foreign on his tongue. Such slang words were not used in his household, though he liked the sound of it. “But Isabella is right—now we have light and warmth! That’s excellent! Thank you, Zach, for your wonderful use of magic.”
———————————————————————————————
“Zahavi will be fine,” Drusilla declared as she lightly patted Lyra on the back and started forward. Comfort was not her topic of choice nor her greatest skill, but she felt some type of sympathy for the poor maid, who was clearly distressed by the event that had just transpired.
Whose absence the woman was most upset by, she didn’t know. If she were to go out on a limb, she would say Zahavi, as he was the prince and the son of the family she was meant to serve. Not only that, but perhaps the woman considered them to be friends as well.
Whether or not the prince actually lived, she couldn’t say for sure. Hard to tell with such a far drop into the unknown. Anything could have happened. “Let’s get going. The faster we find them, the sooner we can help,” she added, less of a reassurance and more of a statement. As she walked along a nearby path, she tried to pinpoint if it headed downward at any point, but it seemed to go in a straightforward direction. Not quite up, but not quite level, either.
To find a path leading down, other than the one they came from, was proving to be quite a difficult task. Dru didn’t want to have to double back, because that would take twice as long.
“Here, watch your step,” the healer called to Lyra as she picked her way across a path that wasn’t quite a path at all. It was gradually sloping enough for her to climb down without losing her footing.
When she reached a place that wasn’t quite as easy to climb, she stopped. “Perhaps you should stay here, if you’ve not much experience with climbing.”
Drusilla, on the other hand, was no unfamiliar with the act of climbing difficult surfaces. Her father insisted that she learn many things over the course of her unconventional childhood and basic skills such as that had been a must, in his book.
“I’ll not have a daughter who can’t climb over the easiest obstacles,” he’d told her.
Others might have found his parenting harsh, but she was quite fond of the memories, and had always liked the training. It made her feel more comfortable in her travels, now.
