Having heard the prince's cries, Zander turned his head just in time to see Zahavi go plunging down into the hole. He stared in surprise as the prince disappeared below. He moves back away from the entrance processing what just happened. Zander didn't care much for Zahavi but seeing him dive down into his possible demise made him a little bit relieved. With all three royals dead, the kingdom would be thrown into chaos.
Zander puts his hand over his mouth to hide a smile. The royals deaths would make things a lot easier for his family, and fellow conspirators to take what whatever they wanted. Despite all of this, Zander had to be sure Zahavi was actually gone. Unless the body was uncovered, he would assume the prince was possibly alive.

Zahavi thought that this was how he would die. How ironic it would be, to die in water and mud, the way they had spoken of earlier. To drown within the depths of this cold river, all alone in the dark, having failed to save a single one of his group members. He didn’t even know if Zach was still alive, though he very much hoped so. The man was resilient and intelligent, so he likely knew how to swim well enough.
He’s a fighter. They all are. Leon, Lyra, Zach—they’re strong, aren’t they? Capable. They’re good people.
It shocked him how quickly he came to realize this, just as he thought he was going to meet his end. He was so lucky to have been blessed with such talented people to accompany him on their journey. Even if he never made it out of this cavern, even if the current dragged him under and washed away his life, he was confident that they would live on without him. They would find the cure and save his parents, wouldn’t they? He was only a liability, not truly a help.
But fate had other things in store. He heard a woman’s voice echo off the walls—Leon, insisting they follow her voice.
Zahavi wanted to. Truly, he did. His muscles wouldn’t listen to him, he couldn’t keep his head above the surface long enough to think of moving against the natural water’s flow.
Someone was calling his name. Zach. The man’s arm wrapped around him, pulled him closer, and kept him afloat. Dragged him to what felt like solid ground, a shore of some description.
The prince coughed and sputtered, retching up mouthfuls of cold, bitter water. His skin was freezing and his teeth chattered. Some part of his body was in agonizing pain, but he ignored it in favor of feeling around at his side for Zach. Touched the man’s shoulder and gave it a tight squeeze. “Zach,” he breathed. “Thank you. Are you alright? Are you hurt? Leon, are you well?”
That was a leader’s first priority: ensure the well being of his people.

She sighed in relief, offering her hand to Isabella to help her up, and coughing up some more. Everything hurt and was cold. While the prince and Zach swam closer, she worked on trying to at least find any cuts. Her head, she realized, got scratched by a rock, which would explain why it hurt. It wasn’t hard hit, it seeme, but left a small trail of scarlet.
She had been through worse, but as she went to wipe it away to prevent it from getting into her eyes, she froze. That was bare skin touching her forehead, not the soft enchanted gloves.
And that pit came into her stomach. She was to never take off the gloves, that what her mother always instructed. That’s the philosophy she lived by. Because she destroyed things she touched if she didn’t. She should have never been so stupid, feeling around the mark like that.
She had to bite her tongue, the guilt crashing onto her like a wave. What if they died down here? What if someone was already dead? All her snark and sass obliterated as she rested her head on her knees, cradling her hands to herself.
The timing...she had to have done it. She got emotional over that stupid vision, and that was the only reason the cave could have collapsed. Now they would die down here, and the prince would never get to help his parents, and Zach would die because of her.
She sucked in a breath, her eyes flashing towards Zahavi, he was asking how she was. She swallowed her guilt, forcing a shallow smirk, “I’ve been better,” she commented, trying to force that snark into her voice, though her smirk fell, as her vision fell from Zahavi to Isabella and Zach, “Are you guys okay?”
She had never heard herself sound so vulnerable, she was thankful for the darkness for once, at least it kept her shame and guilt hidden for the time being. She couldn’t help the savering of her voice, but she’s had to help them.
“Prin-Zahavi,” now wasn’t the time for formalities, “Zahavi, are you okay?” She asked, more genuinely, forcing herself to calm. She made a move to walk over, help them up, but instead chose to cross her arms, waiting for Zach and Zahavi to get their bearings.

Lyra had a few too many near-death experiences for the day. But then Leon became entranced by that mark, like she had seen it. Then Leon kind of, well, she didn’t quite know, but the girl wasn’t attentive nor looking particularly well in those few moments. Then it spiraled downhill.
She was sure there was logical sense. The ground was fragile, and one by one, almost half of the group was gone. She scuttled for cover, hopping over falling rocks, and clinging onto rocks that felt more study, standing beside Zander.
She glanced back, Leon had already fallen, looking more shocked than anything. Then it was Isabella and Zach. She heard both fall, watched the look of terror on their faces.
What his closest to home was when Zahavi ran over, like a good prince, so much unlike his cruel grandfather had been, and went to help Zach. It had been too late, and the boy cried out for Eldred before he too succumbed to the landslide that had stole them away.
She felt the tears falling, she couldn’t help it. She worked to protect that prince all her life. She had befriended, and had come to care for them all.
“No!” She cried out, small whimpers escaping her lips, “No, they can’t be dead,” she whispered.
How could they have been alive, though? Rocks had fallen over them, if the fall didn’t kill them, drowning or being crushed would.
There wasn’t hope. She had seen the bluffs. And even if they had survived...there was no telling if any entrances existed to that cave! They would die horrid deaths, trapped without any hope for escape.
There wasn’t any hope, and it ate at her. Because she wanted to believe they were alive.
“We have to help them!” She yelled out, looking at Zander, barely taking in his expression, her gaze blurred by tears, “How do we help them?” She asked, so futile and hopelessly.
Because she knew that wander.
They couldn’t.

Once the coughing had subsided, Zacharias knelt up. He was dizzy - no doubt from tumbling into a river - but alive nonetheless. His eyes were beginning to adjust to the darkness, but in truth it was likely that none of them would ever be able to see well down here. Well, not without some source of light, that was. The thought dug into his stomach, making him grimace. At least he didn't have to hide whatever expressions came across his face.
"I'm fine," he said, noting in the voices around them. Zahavi, Leon, and another... one he was less familiar with. Isabella, that was it. He was scratched up slightly and undoubtedly had a plethora of bruises. Not to mention the cold. They were all soaking wet, having just emerged from the icy rapids. He scooted away from them a little more, just to be sure. And though any life within that thing seemed unlikely, there was no telling what lay in its depths.
Zacharias cursed himself once more, taking in the battered group. They needed warmth, and they needed light. He could be providing both of those things right now if... well... No, he told himself sternly. He wouldn't allow it. Odds are that they were probably safer without his unstable pyrokinesis. Zach couldn't even pinpoint the last time he used it.
And just like that, a warmth enveloped his chest. The ability swirled around inside, as if the very thought of its use might be enough to actually make it happen. The warmth spread beneath his skin, beckoning at his fingertips. No.
He clasped his hands to his chest, reeling in physically in an attempt to gain control.
Great. Now he was completely safe from the cold while the others lay shivering around him.
"What the hell is this place?" He asked stupidly, darting his gaze wildly as his eyes began to adjust to a fuller extent.

Zander snapped out of his thoughts when he heard Lyra cry out. He takes a deep breath and exhales knowing he had to keep up his appearance. Rising to his feet, Zander dusts himself off and clears his throat. "Try and take a deep breath!" He said taking a small step towards her. "We have to remain calm and collected if we want to save our friends."
He found that strange coming out of his mouth. He wasn't exactly friends with everyone. Heck, most just tolerated him at best.
In any case, they needed to remain calm or else they wouldn't get anywhere. "We need to try and an entrance. I briefly heard water down there so there has to be a place where the water comes out somewhere." If they found them.

Eldred, despite his old age, was able to get to safety as the ground split and the rocks tumbled. Only to see Isabella fall moments later. That left a pang in his chest, but not so much as the cry of his name in that oh-so-familiar voice.
“Zahavi!”
Eldred, despite knowing what an idiot it made him to put himself back in danger, he had rushed forward to try and go to the prince’s aid. He had almost been able to get there, but it was too late. He was close enough, though, to see the pure fear and horror on the young prince’s face as he fell.
The boy he had a duty to protect. He was royal advisor, he served the kind and queen and their son, that was his entire role. And yes, under his watch, one had likely fallen to his death and the other two were poisoned and quickly heading towards their own.
Some royal advisor he was.
If he’d paid more attention at the gala, the king and queen would have been alright and they never would have had to go on this stupid quest. And Zahavi would have beep alright too.
But suddenly Lyra was crying out, and Zander was trying to keep her calm, offering some suggestions as to how they should go on.
“Zander is right,” he suggested “we ought to stay calm. But I doubt the rest of the group could have survived that fall. The water being deep enough and being right below them when they fell is our only hope. Finding where the water comes out is our best chance. Logic tells us it must come out somewhere lower on the face of the mountain, but aside from that it could be anywhere. It could be on the other side of the mountain. That could take a long time, time the king and queen don’t have.”
Should they risk going on a search for where the water left the mountain, no matter how long it took them? Could they bear trying to go on without the rest of the group?
Logically, Eldred knew they should assume the rest of the group dead and try and go on with their journey. They didn’t have a long window to save the king and queen. Emotionally, he wanted to look for Zahavi and the others. He’d been unable to save Zahavi when he fell, and he wanted more than anything to believe that the boy was alive. He wanted to go and look for him now.
But maybe there were ways they could find where the water leaves the mountain quicker.
“We could find it quicker if we split up,” Eldred suggested “which I know always sounds like a terrible idea but we could split into groups of two so nobody’s alone. I suggest we look for a few hours and if nobody finds anything we meet back here - the gargantuan hole is a pretty clear landmark - and figure out where we go from there. The problem is that a few hours is all we have, especially if we don’t want to lose the daylight, and we even if we split up to cover more ground it’s not enough time to make it likely that we find them. And there’s no guarantee that this water does come out on the mountain, it could be an entirely subterranean river.”
Three hours should provide enough time to at least try and get a view of the face of several different parts of the mountain and see if they could spot any signs of water. They didn’t have long to look if they were going to do that.
“It’s either take a long shot to look for them, or assume our companions lost and try to keep going without them,” Eldred commented
Which was an equally valid suggestion but probably not one any of the group wanted to think about.

Isabella had been following Zach’s voice until Leon spoke up and told everyone to follow hers. She switched tack, moving to follow Leon’s voice since that’s where Zach and Zahavi and everyone else would be going.
She was a little scared that the prince was down here. If he died, that would be it for the royal family if they failed to save the kind gam queen. But most importantly, the prince was a little sickly and it wasn’t exactly particularly safe down here
She took the hand Leon offered, joining the rest of the group.
“I’m okay, I’m not hurt,” she answered when the others asked if everyone was alright “I’m glad you’re all alright.”
And then Zach asked what this place was, and Isabella looked at him. She wasn’t a particularly sarcastic person, but she had her own brand of sass. Even though it probably wasn’t the time for that right now.
“Given the darkness and that we’re underground, I’m going to venture that we’re in a cave,” replied Isabella with a feeble attempt as a teasing smile. She was cold, wet and miserable and honestly just scared. She wasn’t really in the mood. Her attempts to keep spirits up probably weren’t really going to work.
Isabella didn’t know a whole lot about caves, to be frank. To be more precise, she knew absolutely nothing about caves. But she wasn’t stupid, and it wasn’t hard to figure out there best move from here.
“I guess we don’t have any other option but to keep going,” she sighed “and hope there’s another entrance somewhere.”
Going deeper into the caves seemed like the opposite of a good idea, but it was also the only chance they had. They might never find an exit, this cave system could be like a labyrinth. But they had nothing to lose and they certainly weren’t going to get anywhere by staying here and shivering in the cold. They were relatively unhurt and could keep moving. And if they were going to have any chance of warming up they would need to keep going. Light and heat would help, though.
“And some light would probably do us a lot of good,” she pointed out
Though it was useless because none of their supplies had washed down here with them and most everything that might have washed down here in terms of sticks or wood would be soaking and unusable. They may have to search in the dark.

Zahavi had never been more relieved to hear that everyone was, more or less, alright. They were scraped and scratched up, as was expected from such a drastic fall, but there seemed to be no serious injuries. Which was good, because he was vaguely certain that their healer was still atop the mountain with the others, and they had no way to treat any bad wounds. It was only when Leon asked after his own well being that he recalled his aching shoulder.
“I believe something hit my shoulder on the way down, but I’m alright,” he answered, for while the pain was a bit of an inconvenience, it was nothing that he couldn’t handle. Well, perhaps it was the adrenaline masking most of the pain. Either way, there wasn’t time to dwell over himself when he had a shocked group to take care of.
It surprised him how easy it was to put aside his own health for the sake of those around him.
Zach’s question, followed Isabella’s somewhat humorous response, brought a tiny smile to his lips. He was glad to see that even a situation as bad as this couldn’t completely stifle her natural wit. “If the water is heading this way, then it’s likely there’s an opening toward the other end of the cave,” he added as he rose slowly to his feet. His soaking clothes clung to his body like a second skin, cold air sending shivers down his spine as he wrapped his arms around himself. “The river has to go somewhere.”
Isabella was right, though. A bit of light would do them good. Unfortunately, it seemed unlikely that they would be able to start a fire, natural or magical. There was nothing here to burn, no kindling that wasn’t soaking wet, and he wasn’t even quite sure how magic worked in the first place.
“We may have to travel blind for a while,” Zahavi noted with a displeased hum, but he was already moving forward, further into the cave. He held out his arms, felt the ground with his feet in case there was a drop off, and found the ground to be solid. “It’s risky, but I don’t think we’ll be able to make a light.”

Drusilla had tried to help the others, but she was no faster than Eldred had been. It hurt far worse to see the look of fear and horror on Zahavi’s face as he fell. She was used to losing people she knew, to injury and disease. Yet even so, this was different. It wasn’t meant to be, merely a tragic accident that came along with being in such dangerous territory.
She could hear a woman shrieking and turned to find Lyra, tears streaking her cheeks as she cried out. While there was no certain way of knowing whether or not they were dead, Dru had her doubts. Many times when she was treating a victim of a large fall, they were rendered immobile through broken bones and deep wounds. Sometimes, they died upon impact, but rarely, they survived. Those that did live were often left permanently scarred or unable to walk.
A river twisted and turned beneath the cliff, for she could hear the rapid flow of water, and she knew that it very well could have broken their fall. If they weren’t crushed by rocks or swept away by its currents, which may have been unlikely, they could still be alive.
“Let’s not presume anyone dead until we have more answers,” the healer declared, as she stepped over to Lyra and wrapped an arm around her shoulders. The poor woman was as sweet as could be, wrought with worry over the others, and Dru couldn’t blame her. “They may have survived the fall. If they’re injured, we need to find them fast. The wounds of a long fall are more dangerous the longer they are left untreated.”
It was when Eldred mentioned leaving without them that a grimace overcame the woman’s features. They didn’t have time to waste if they wanted to save the king and queen, but it went against everything she had been taught to abandon those who might be in need of her assistance. However, there was no sense in arguing.
“I will go with Lyra,” Drusilla declared, because the woman seemed like she needed a shoulder to lean on and she’d already had a scare earlier that day. “We’ll try to find a safe way down and see if we can follow the river.”

Leon, once Isabella took her hand, had immediately retreated. That was stupid, with her emotions going wild, she didn’t have the option to just play hero. Not when she got them into this mess.
Usually, she would have been the one with a snarky reply to Zach’s question, but she let Isabella take the cake, instead trying to make out things. Slowly, her eyes were adjusting, she could see the roughest silouhettes nearby, though she was freezing cold.
Her head stung, but the blood wasn’t by any means bad, it was a simple scratch, and other than that, her body was sore, and she had a cough that didn’t want to go away for a while. But she was mostly fine. Cold, but fine. She was more worried about Zahavi.
“We won’t,” Leon affirmed when they spoke about light, “All of our supplies would be wet, and they won’t dry quick in this cave.” She commented, trying to decide, based on rough heights, who each person was, so she could properly look at them.
Despite her guilt, she nodded to them, “I don’t think this shelf goes back to the entrance anyways, and we can’t swim up this river,” she tacked on, with a sigh, “And even if we could make it back, how would we make it out?” She shook her head, fiercely shaking off the water and small amount of blood that seemed to already be drying. Cuts on the head bleed well, she realized, even tiny scratches.
She nodded, uselessly, at the idea. “I used to jump roofs in the city, do stunts and stuff,” she started, not really even knowing what she was suggesting, “This will likely be dangerous, bluffs and drops, I can go ahead of you guys, test the safety of everything.”
She got them into this mess, that was all she could do. Without leaving much room for argument, she began stalking forward, listening to the river to guide herself. The price was a good leader, even in such dire situation, and she had sorely miscalculated him. Even Isabella and Zach. She couldn’t stand the though of surviving if she got them killed, especially not now.

She felt like a baby, crying her eyes out. It wasn’t just her aspirations in the line of Fire, but she had came to care deeply for the prince and Eldred and all of her companions. She didn’t want to lose those friendships she made. The prince was akin to a friend’s younger brother, she had to take care of him sometimes, but he wasn’t quite her friend. Eldred was someone who used to intimidate her.
Isabella, however, had started to become a friend. And Leon just witnessed 4 people fall to their deaths.
She felt someone place an arm on her, and took in the warmth, and the words, while truthful, only served to comfort her a bit. It wasn’t for sure that they had to be dead. But she knew the chances, she came face to face with death earlier.
She kept silent through their decisions, she never was allowed to make any anyways, she was the maid, always followed orders, never had a choice unless she wanted to give up all her effort and work.
Drusilla offered to go with her, and she smiled softly. The idea was comforting, going with the healer was a nice throught, Dru wasn’t the kindest person on earth, but she was earnest and truthful, and wouldn’t be pessimistic or optimistic. She was a woman of fact, but had the compassion to comfort her group when they were in need.
“So meet here by nightfall at latest?” She commented, angrily wiping away tears, seeming to collect herself a bit. “Lets hope, when we get in tonight,, Leon doesn’t eavesdrop and fall into a lake again,” she tried joking, hollowly, with a watery laugh, “Or that Zahavi-“ she cut off, feeling a fresh wave of tears. Her attempts at optimism were silly. They couldn’t know for sure.
“Just be safe,” she commented, looking at Eldred, “If-If Za-if he is gone, you’re the kingdom’s hope.” She looked at Drusilla, making it clear that the hope included Dru.

Zacharias scoffed at Isabella's remark, duly noting the girl's ability to keep some level of sarcasm in a situation like the one they had found themselves in. He listened intently to the other's comments, but his mind was a haze of emotions. They were alive, but a sense of despair had already begun to settle inside his chest.
That and anger towards the prince.
Yes, the gesture towards saving his life had been heroic, but it was also stupid. Very, very, stupid. If Zahavi hadn't gone back for Zacharias, he would've been safe from their current predicament. Why had such a selfless decision come from a person who needed to be selfish at a time like this?
And then the group began to discuss the issue at large: light and warmth. In the dark, the others were unaware of Zach's clothes actually beginning to dry. His skin was still slightly warm, and he shied away to the back of the line as Leon began to lead them, fearing any unwanted touch.
You have to.
The words scattered themselves throughout his skull, setting in a pulsing headache. It were as if the flames beneath his skin had a mine completely of their own. They knew the situation had arisen. They knew his thoughts. The warmth stirred about, coaxing Zach to reveal them.
He resisted once more, but the spark in his chest did not take kindly to the strict boundaries that had been built around it. Another surge of heat rippled beneath his skin, beckoning to be let loose. This is it, Zach thought, edging closer to the river. If he lost control, all he needed to do was drop off into its piercing depths.
Zacharias sealed his eyes shut - although such an action didn't make much of a difference to his vision - and crouched down near the bank. This isn't control. This is imprisonment. Shakily, Zach stretched his arms over the rapids, ready to plunge them in if anything were to happen. It was an invitation, really, and the flames had never had such a gesture before.
A small ball of fire flickered into existence over his palms, glowing brilliantly blue. "Guys..." He said warily, not moving from his position near the river. But the flame danced about innocently in the air, almost as if it were happy to be there.
