(I love Zahavi and Dru
And now I’m imaging Eldred trying his best not to use magic in front of Zahavi because he knew that if he did it would open up a whole slew of questions and Zahavi would be fascinated and Eldred would never get a break)

(I love watching people get the Z names mixed up.)
Her eye’s watched Zach, how he freaked out when Zahavi came nearer, and threatened to dunk the flame. She practically snorted at that point in time. Who wouldn’t?
A common thief was befriending a prince, and threatening not to show him his pretty magic unless the prince remained at a distance like a good boy.
Who wouldn’t laugh?
Okay, everyone else in the cavern with her, but she couldn’t help a few chuckles. She made a mental note not to show her powers to Isabella unless in a dire circumstance. But she was pretty much in the clear.
She almost went to dry their clothes, using her hydrokinesis to pull out the water, but decided against it. That would include being near them, with her hands either touching or hovering above them. Now that she didn’t have her gloves, the channel to her power, her hand, were compromised of destruction and the threat of death at one wrong move. One hovering touch. Not that her power didn’t work in other ways, but it mostly was through her hands. Hands were a form of control, grabbing, moving. For many magic users, staffs, wands, or even their bare hands were used to wield magic. Some talented ones could do it without usage of anything, just their mind.
Her eyes widened comically when the flame started practically bouncing off the literal walls, before it disappeared. Her eyes then narrowed, speculatilation deep in her eyes. Fire was one of the hardest elements to come by, to be gifted with, and to control. It was wild, and if the signs were correct, he didn’t really control it.
While the group went to stand closer, she remained at a distance. Not due to fear, but with light, she planned out a new course of travel. Though she turned to watch them, the fire was tempting, so she stepped closer, remaining at a distance still, with her hands behind her back. She had to find a way to get her powers under control, like Zach.
No, no she wouldn’t be able to do that. Her mother even said it wasn’t something to be controlled. It was something that controlled you.
“I have to-“ She tampered off, shaking the thoughts from her head. She couldn’t just leave them for dead. Instead, she marveled at the flames, they were a pretty blue color, and she flashed a smile, “You know, you’re really starting to surprise me Zach, maybe you are a little helpful.”

[[ lmao thank youuuu, I love all of our collective babies we have here.
I’ve been trying to think of a way to explain Zahavi’s slightly unexpected fascination with magic, because I kind of wanted to incorporate it in a bigger way. Like he is physically unable to help being entranced by magic, it captures his attention way too much. But I don’t plan for him to ever be a magic user himself, so that’s definitely off the table. ]]

"Yeah, light and warmth," Zach echoed dumbly, unsure of just how useful the small flame would be- especially if it were angered for a second time. But the fire just wobbled about happily, content with the amount of dormant energy it had expelled moments before. For now, at least, Zach was confident that he could keep the small light ablaze.
Zacharias scoffed at Leon's words, but he refrained from replicating her sass. I am helpful with or without this curse, he thought simply, glaring at the girl. "More helpful than you have been, that's for sure," he remarked, though Zach was completely unaware of how she had aided in thrusting them into the current situation.
Zach held up the flame, drawing his attention to their surroundings. Shadows danced across the walls with each flicker of flame, revealing and masking the jagged surfaces around them. Nothing in particular seemed to stick out, apart from the vast number of stalactites on the roof of the cave- which very literally did so.
"I suppose," he began, looking back towards the front of the group, "We go further. Head along the river until we find something."

The magic, after the initial panic and shock, was starting to grow on Isabella.
She was used to things you could control. Her family made and sold hunting supplies, and were fletchers. Which meant Isabella was handier with a bow than most would assume she would be. And one could control a bow. Sure, the wind might affect the flight of your arrow but you could correct for that. But other than that, every little thing could be controlled by the archer. She might be interested in fun and adventure, and she wanted to experience new things and be curious. What she wasn’t used to was something powerful and dangerous that couldn’t be controlled.
Her father had taught her ever since she was a little girl the importance of control. In a conversation, in a negotiation, with a bow. She had thought his lectures dumb at the time, had been far more eager to just run and explore the world until her wanderlust was satisfied. She hadn’t wanted to think about control, or about plans or consequences or dangers. Now she had bitten off far more than she could chew.
The cave wasn’t anything particularly special. That much seemed apparent as Zach’s light filled the room. It was beautiful, that eerie, almost otherworldly light.
“Seems like our best, or rather our only, option,” Isabella agreed
If they were going to get out of here, they’d have to keep moving
(This is so terrible I just wanted to get something up)

Whether Lyra believed her or not, she didn’t reply. Instead, she stuck to an uneasy silence, walking alongside Drusilla and soaking up some of the warmth and kindness.
After watching her father die, it had never been quite easy to see dire situations. She wanted to help Zahavi on his quest, because she knew what it was like to see someone you loved waste away by disease. Tuberculosis was rarer, but not unheard of in the kingdom’s. She felt sad for any poor soul who had it.
But not the prince would never get to say goodbye. The chances of them being alive may have been likely. But getting out? This whole journey was considered forbidden, with traps and magic and guardians. Morning that any of them quite knew it yet. But the chances of the prince ever finding a way out was slim. What was worse?
Isabella was there, and so were two other children much too young to die. Just like Zahavi. All the youngest members of their group were torn away. What we as the chances of survival with such little experience?
To her knowledge, Zahavi was an inexperienced prince, Zach was a busboy who was hired as extra for the gala, and Leon was a weird noble girl, or a peasant? After watching Leon fall in the water, she knew the girl had experience with swimming, but would it be enough for her to survive a underground river? What of the prince? Of Isabella and Zach?
Drusilla warned her to watch her step, for a moment she was embaressed, reminding herself of her mistake earlier that day. The landslide. Then she was instructed not to climb if she didn’t have experience.
She didn’t, but that didn’t mean she wouldn’t help. She couldn’t just be the one useless member in this quest. The prince himself sacrificed his life in a futile attempt to save on of his subjects.
“No!” She quickly amended as she slid down, much more graceful, to step beside Drusilla. “I may have been a maid most of my life, but the journey will require much worse trials than this. I can do this.” She commented, before glancing up, “Zahavi would have done it. If a prince who was sheltered all his life can be brave enough to risk his life for us, I’ll risk my life to find him and return him home, safe.”

The light of the flame brought Leon to see how bad her hands looked. The skin looked shared at her finger tips, causing her to gulp. She had never seen them look so bad before. She was sure it would pass though, looking between the group. Zahavi looked to be in pain, other than that, everyone looked cold and shaken.
She had been too. Looking at her comrades for a moment, though she froze slightly at Zach’s jab. She laughed uneasily at it, because he want wrong. Not at all. “You sure have been.” She commented, biting back the rising guilt.
Her mother warned her about this. She had been stupid. Agreeing on this journey had been a death sentence. If she didn’t kill them, her magic would tear her apart before she could get it under control.
“Though I must say, that’s sure a talent, I’ve never seen anyone with fire magic.” Okay, theoretically, she shouldn’t have seen any magic at all. But that wasn’t really her worry, “It seems to have a mind of it’s own though,” she commented, entranced by the flames for a moment, it amused her, it’s little show of power. She wondered how Zach could have hidden such a thing from her, though her mind sourly reminded her that he didn’t really trust her. What was worse, is that she couldn’t really blame them for it now either.
Their suggestions caused her to nod lightly, “Okay, that’s a good idea. We have light now, so that’s a plus.” She commented, “It’s better than rotting to death in here.” She winced slightly at her wording, an unintentional pun on her current conditions.

Zander wondered if he had come across as to optimistic. He decided to answer by just nodding his head. Zander wouldn't be surprised if someone from their group ends up dead. Although if he had to guess, Eldred would be the most likely to perish or one of the girls. Keep yourself alive that's all that matters.
Zander looks around as they carefully make their way down the path. He tries keeping an eye out for any sort of entrance or something that stood out. "Do you see anything?" He asked Eldred. So far, all he could see was a bunch of rocks and possibly some animals in the distance. Least the scenery was nice to look at and the whether wasn't to bad. He hated being out in the rain.

As Zacharias got more comfortable with the flame, he tested out expanding and diminishing it subconsciously. He noticed how subtle movements could bend the little light, but that ultimately it was driven by thought. Even though he seemed to temporarily have it under control, however, an inkling of fear remained at the forefront of his mind- growing with each passing thought.
Zach half expected Leon to bicker further, but she simply dropped the conversation. Had he misinterpreted her earlier sarcastic remark? Surely not, though it was certainly hard to tell at times when only the slightest change in tone was present. Whatever it was, she seemed to be somewhat genuine in her words.
And then she was talking about talent... and how the creature upon his palm seemed sentient. "Yeah, it would seem that way." He bobbed his hand up and down as if to give the little flicker a thrill. Once he had stopped, the flame responded by bobbing up and down on its own a few times.
Zach couldn't contain a chuckle from escaping his lips, continuing onward with his arm outstretched ahead of them.
"Though I don't often refer to this as a talent." His memory was drawn back to their discussion on the rooftop; how he had idly tipped her off about the curse that had infested his life. Zach had allowed her to believe that he was speaking of his telekinesis, fearing how she would react to the knowledge that something much darker dwelled within him.
His mood had dampened, and the fire ever-so-slightly took upon a darker hue. "Protect the others, though, will you?" Zach asked, his mind plagued with worry. "I don't mean to hurt anyone, I promise, it's just... I've lost control before and it hasn't gone well."
As they walked further along, the bank began to curve towards the cave wall, essentially thinning the path that they traveled upon. Zach squinted his eyes into the darkness ahead, noting that they would only be able to walk in single file along the side of the cave if they were to continue on the 'path'.
That's just great.

Nothing seemed particularly suspicious to Eldred about Zander. The old man had even felt comfortable enough to joke around with him there about the man’s use of the word touch. It wasn’t serious, and in fact he did think the kids were tough. They’d look after one another. But still, they had to find them. Time was of the essence, especially if they were injured.
Perhaps Eldred has been a fool to let Zahavi suggest this journey rather than simply locking down the palace to find the culprit of the poisoning. But no. The opportunity of finding a cure was far too valuable. And besides, hope was not lost.
“Unfortunately, no,” Eldred replied to Zander’s question, pausing to cough for a moment “but perhaps we’ll have more luck further along the path.”
He could only hope so. He just had to pray that this river wasn’t a subterranean one, in which case it may not come out anywhere on the mountain. Hopefully there would still be a cave entrance somewhere on the mountain. Surely there must be something, anything.
“I’m glad you came on this journey with us, Zander,” Eldred commented “you’re an actual adult, and you’re sensible, which is what I need right now.”
Honestly, this group had an awful lot of chaotic teenagers and excitable young people. Eldred liked them well enough, but they were very energetic and honestly they gave Eldred a headache most of the time. At least Zander was easier to spend time around. Of course, Eldred wasn’t about to just start trusting him, he didn’t do that with anyone. But he appreciated Zander for not being loud or chaotic.

Isabella had seen the way the flame responded to Zach moving his hand up and down, which brought a smile to her face. It seemed like Leon was right, and that the magic seemed to be sentient.
But if that magic was sentient, perhaps all magic was sentient. And if all magic was sentient, how could magic users be punished for what magic did? To control it was impossible if it was sentient. To work with it, yes, but presumably such a thing would take time and training. And magic users couldn’t use their magic that openly.
If magic was sentient, did it not take kindly to being suppressed?
These thoughts were swirling through Isabella’s mind as they walked onwards through the cave. Only Eldred in their group remembered a time before all magic was forbidden. Perhaps she ought to ask him about it if they ever got out of this.
She paid no heed to the rest of the conversation happening around her, too lost in her thoughts to really pay attention to what was happening around her.
The group cam to a halt, and their situation became apparent to Isabella. They’d have to walk single-file to continue along the path.
Not ideal, but they could do that.
This was at least better than the disadvantage they’d been at before with their lack of light. If they continued this way they would find an exit, or hopefully anyway. And if they were lucky they would get out of here without any event.
“On we go, I suppose,” she murmured
(It’s terrible again but I wanted to get her up)

Leon snorted, brushing off the odd color to her hands. It was likely just the lack of warmth. Soon it would fade, things would be normal. Instead she took to watching the fire, softly smiling, snorting slightly, “Hey, it’s like you, getting to know everyone.” She felt crazy for talking to a flame, but watching it bobbing around was amusing, and she was no stranger to the ways of magic.
It seemed the very things had lifted her spirits, replacing her worry with a bit of tangeable hope. Though his words quickly disturbed her.
She looked back, considering him for a moment. It didn’t give her much to figure out, but all this hiding. He didn’t like this ability, the incident with the candle. It spelled out a Trouble, and she didn’t like the way he wasn’t trusting himself.
She brought her voice to a whisper, “I’m not a very good guardian,” she admitted, “I know someone whose great at saving others though, maybe ask him instead, he kind of caught me when I accidentally fell off a balcony” of course, she was referencing him. She still believed her words. Nothing was a curse. Sure, she lead to this by accident. But now they had fire, they could get out, and then she could stop being guilty. If everyone else could suck it up, so could she. Though she rolled her eyes, “You’re acting as if you’re the one who got us in here-“ but actually, that was me.
Red zone. Backtrack, now.
“What I mean is!” She quickly amended, forcing herself to back up, forcing some nervous laughter to escape herself, holding her hands up for a moment as she forced herself to get off the pessimistic train of thought, “Is that your powers haven’t hurt us yet. And I trust you, for what it’s worth,” which was probably nothing. She obviously didn’t trust anyone very much at all. “Plus, magic isn’t something you control. It controls you-“ her face scrunched up in thought, a dirty glare crossing it, “But that’s a stupid thing. Basically! You’re doing fine.” She snorted at that part, crossing her arms to follow the group. Her passive aggressive demeanor was still there, just as it always had been, like she flipped a switch to turn it back on.
She looked at the shelf, and nodded when Isabella replied. “Let’s just get out of here,” she agreed, stepping forward. She really was stupid sometimes, but Zahavi was injured. The prince, for all intents, should go in the middle, so someone could help him if they needed to.
So she stepped up, intent on getting by, most of her worries already fading from mind. Sure, she felt guilty, but guilt could only last so long. And she worried over her finger tips, but they were freezing cold too. It was a cave after all. Once she was out, she could feel better, no one would be hurt, and they could all just continue onwards, she’d get new gloves, and they would forget it.
And she didn’t have anything to worry about.
(not.
I do have an oral for French today. So I wanted to go ahead and get a reply up :3. At this point, Leon’s calming down some, rationalizing, and giving horrible secret pep talks.)

"It's no problem at all." Zander said as they continued down the path. "Being apart of this quest for the cure is an honor and something I take very seriously. The Nightingales has been kind to my family for years and feels only right to repay the favor." Saying those words made him want to gag. There were many things he didn't like about that family. They were a bunch of entitled usurpers who didn't deserve the throne!
Why anyone tolerated their rule was beyond his comprehension. Least he wouldn't have to worry about them for long. If the prince survived oh well but if he dies, he dies. A particular thought occurred to him and he bites the inside of his cheek.
If the time came, could he bring himself to kill the prince? He wasn't a monster but if Zavahi got in the way of his plans..... "It's all for the greater good." Zander shuddered as he immediately tried to block out the voice. No way could he deal with that now! He should be "looking" for their lost companions or attempting to look.

Zach’s magic was a source of great interest for Zahavi, and while he paid little attention to Leon’s encouraging speech, he was glad that there were other magic users to comfort the man. It would have been awful, if he’d been alone and without any friends who shared his plight of being unable to control it. Although, he didn’t know if Leon had that particular issue—she seemed to know what she was doing, most of the time, despite being a bit of a wild lady.
The flame flickering in Zach’s hand caught his attention more than once as they walked, but he managed to keep himself at a respectable distance. It was, he realized, quite unbecoming of a prince to act so strangely. Then again, he never felt like he was truly worthy of the royal title he’d been born with. Alas, it was still his title to claim.
When the path narrowed and became treacherous, he fought to keep his expression calm and not wrinkle his nose like a child at his vegetables.
Oh, excellent, a horrifying bottomless pit of death.
Zahavi couldn’t very well voice this thought aloud, not if he wanted to honor his parents and the lesson they once gave him. Princes were meant to be poised and polite, quiet but assertive. Well put together at all times, regardless of the company they found themselves in. They spoke only of necessary things, but never should they bring a bad situation down further with their words. Encouragement and confidence was the proper response to difficult tasks and obstacles.
Unfortunately for everyone else, those leader lessons probably came out at the worst possible time.
“I’ll go first,” he decided, and without taking the time to listen to any protests, started forward on the narrow pathway. His back hugged the wall and each step he took was careful, slow and purposeful. If he took deep breaths and focused, it didn’t feel quite as terrifying. A good prince would put himself in danger first, before he allowed his companions to do so—if that meant walking this dangerous path first, then he would willingly do so.
Maybe, when this journey was over, his parents would finally have a reason to be proud of him.
Halfway across the, a weaker part of the edge crumbled beneath his foot, and he stumbled to catch himself. It was only a small chunk, not the main support, but it was enough for him to momentarily lose his balance. It seemed like it took ages for him to reach a good distance.
“The structure seems solid, but be careful of where you step towards the middle. There are some little parts that aren’t quite as sturdy.” He called, taking a moment to rub at his aching shoulder, which was decidedly the wrong decision. It shot pain through his arm, fast and bright as lightning, and he bit his tongue to keep from making a noise.

Drusilla listened to the maid’s vehement disagreement with a raised brow and a flat expression. Her words may have been a bit shaky, but it was clear that they were true. She doubted this woman could lie and fake such confidence, even if she wanted to. “Do as you like, but I believe our prince is not quite the brave man you make him out to be.”
There was no grudge or hatred held towards the prince, but frankly, he was more than unfit to be a ruler of so many people. Her father agreed very much in this sense, for he had never much liked the only son of the king and queen. Too young, too foolish, and far too reckless. Though he willingly chased after Zach, a man who so obviously couldn’t be saved, that didn’t make him a good leader. It made him irresponsible and a woeful bleeding heart. Bravery had not fueled that action, she was certain, but rather a childish attempt to save what he thought he had a right to: his companions. Like a child refusing to give up their favorite toy after it had broken.
People could sympathize with the prince, perhaps. Grow to like and care for him, even. But they could never loyally follow him, being the way he was.
She continued down the slope, until they reached a point where climbing down became a bit of a chore. This was one of those few times that Dru was quite glad that most of her body was muscle—unusually so, for a woman of her status—as she used both hands and feet to pick her way down to the next level surface. Crossed her arms over her chest and she watched Lyra carefully.
“I know you care for the prince. You believe in his abilities as a leader. I, for one, don’t have much optimism for his future,” she explained, glancing down toward the furious river below. They were getting closer, but it was still so far away. “He’s a bratty child with a strong sense of entitlement. What happened earlier proves that he doesn’t think before he acts. Perhaps he can learn to be a better leader, but it won’t be in a single day.”

Okay but I have a thought. I just need a moment where Eldred basically tells Zahavi to forget all the rules he’s learned about being a prince and to do what he thinks is right. Maybe he’s hesitant about something he has to do because he doesn’t think princes should do that and Eldred just tells him ‘screw being a prince.’
Idk I feel like Eldred has been all rules and reinforcing lessons about royalty in Zahavi’s life so I just think something like that would be fun)
