In response to Zahavi’s comment about what he would do if he got to Eldred’s age, the man just smirked.
“I’m touched, your highness,” he responded in his usual dry tone
Eldred supposed the joking around of these teenagers wasn’t so bad. Sure, it annoyed him sometimes and was exhausting to listen to, but it was refreshing in a way. He didn’t have any children of his own. After the loss of his wife he’d never married again, and even if he had been open to love again he had been too caught up in his work. Perhaps some would say he’d let his younger years pass him by and had lost the chance for a family of his own. But he’d decided a long time ago that he didn’t want any of that if he couldn’t have it with Helena.
Thinking of her, he hadn’t even noticed that he’d briefly touched his ring again. He always did that when he was thinking about her
He watched with some amusement the conversation about the best way to die. He figured he might as well weigh in.
“For the record,” he commented “if the choice is drowning in mud or death by some beast, I’d choose the latter every time.”
Drowning in mud was just pathetic and kind of depressing. He’d rather die from something he could fight against. Tuberculosis, sadly, did not fall in that category.
It was even more amusing watched Leon getting out of the water, though Eldred thought better than to comment on how amusing it was because he was pretty sure Leon looked ready to murder anyone who said anything more on the matter.
They headed back towards the camp, and towards breakfast. Leon split off from the group, informing them they had twenty-five minutes. Just enough time to eat breakfast and get their supplies together. A cough reminded Eldred that he would really need the energy for the mountain trails above.
If there was part of the journey that was going to be dangerous for the man, it would be this part. Climbing wasn’t something that would have bothered him years ago, but he wasn’t twenty anymore. Not to mention the fact that he wasn’t sure how well his lungs would stand up to the climbing. His lung capacity seemed to get smaller by the day, his lungs feeling tighter. But he could do this. It was, thankfully, early in the journey. He was sure there would be more walks like this later on, more climbing, but for now it was early enough in the journey that he wasn’t so ill that he couldn’t handle it.
Eldred broke off from the group at that point too, having noticed that Lyra, Isabella and Drusilla were working on the breakfast. They didn’t need anyone else to help, otherwise the cooking area would get simply too crowded. The best thing he could do was get his supplies together and get ready for the day ahead while they finished making the breakfast. Efficiency was paramount if they were going to get out of camp by a decent time.

The sun was finally out, casting a strange silouhette over the rocky land below. Travelers, they were, with their bags, and their worn down expressions.
One night of rest was all they were allotted, and finally the time had come to enter into the true trials that this mission was known for.
Leon knew that, she knew parts of it roughly, at least. She listened to Zahavi, Eldred, and Zach who had fallen in step ahead of her. She decided to linger at the back, so Zelos could do whatever he pleased. No one was keen on taking their eyes off the path leading up either. It wasn’t a cold day, but it wasn’t particularly warm, and the higher up it got, the cooler the air became. But no one would look back as long as the path remained narrow and rocky.
Leon knew that because of the little scare they had early, when the young maid, Lyra, had almost took a tumble off the small cliffs they had already bypassed.
The path was strange, carved, ancient even, and led slightly up the mountain. Slightly steep, but easy enough for those like Eldred to scale without too much pain. They had been laid and remained for years, and they hadn’t even really scaled much yet. Just a small portion, and there were many mountains beyond the first. It would take days to get through, but there wasn’t another way. The map specifically laid out that this was the path they had to take. Something important was in the mountains.
Well, literally, not that any of them knew it quite yet.
One little glance to the side, and Leon could already see the deadly drops one miss step could bring about, not that fears ad ever bothered her. As a daring thief, she had to skip from roof to roof, doing stunts and flips and jumps that would give some a heart attack if they attempted them. She was quite the acrobat, but the drops themselves even caused her to gulp slightly.
One wrong move, and they could all die. It wouldn’t take much to cause a land slide in this place.
So in silence, they pondered the path. Some chattered mindlessly up ahead. But Leon remained in her silence, scanning the paths with a forlorn look on her face.
She didn’t think much, moving her hand around her armlet, she picked up the nervous habit of twisting it around her arm, side to side. She thought about the prince, how upset he was since the gala, she though of the king and queen, oh Eldred and Drusilla. She thought of Zelos, and of Zach. She thought about the gala, he conversation with each of them, her interactions at the lake before they ate and left.
This was all so silly. She was making a fool of herself, she was making herself out to be a child. She never had friends before, other than Zelos. Usually it was her and him, teasing merchants and peasants alike, and stealing from other thieves. Now she was around people who were actually treating he rlike another human, not someone inferior to them, and she had been openly conversing with them.
She hated to admit it, but the lake was actually...fun. She was glad it happened, even if it included getting a bit dirty. She was glad she’s went to the gala. She was...content.
That was, until she heard the chattering pick up in volume, before falling silent. It was Eldred who was glancing back at her, and she snapped out of her thoughts when he beckoned her.
“What do we do now?” He questioned. It caused her to walk forward, past the ragtag group, approaching whatever issue was at hand. At first, she was annoyed and confused, until she spotted a smaller black hole in the surface of the stone up ahead, and to the left of it, the path continued.
Lyra had piped up while she thought, eyes narrowed, “It should be obvious, right?” She commented, gaining looks from some of the other members of the group, “We have to continue on the path. Why are we just stopping here?”
“What if something’s down there?” Zach pointed out, and Leon cast their voices out after a moment.
The cave entrance, as she guessed it was, was just over the height of a average woman, meaning some members of the party would have to crouch. But it wasn’t the cave that caught her sight.
It was the etching on a pillar right before it. She had seen it before. She couldn’t help it, she heard someone call her name, but she was almost entranced. The mark was a simply one, a symbol, one that outlined the head of a lion, ten dots surrounding it’s head, though it looked even primitive in design, barely making out the sketch.
The ground under her was fragile, it couldn’t carry much weight. Of course there would be caves, she shouldn’t have been so stupid. But she couldn’t help it.
That sign, what did it mean?
She removed her gloves, placing a hand on the marking, it felt natural to her. Immediately, she was lost to reality. She had seen it somewhere before. Like a foggy dream, except...
”Listen carefully,” a voice wafted, and Leon felt herself in darkness, unable to see or properly find herself, “The cure isn’t what you think it is. You must find the library, and you can’t get in the library without portions of the key.”
“That’s stupid!” A male voice responded, arms crossing in stubbornness, “You can’t tell me anything more? It’s my daughter we’re-“
“I can only tell you what you deserve to hear. They must use the map, Archimedes, or they’ll never find what your searching for. The library of Alexandria is legendary...but it’s a myth. It’s not real. No one’s ever gotten past the mountains, past the cursed lands.” The older man inquired, glaring at the younger man and silent woman and child. He then turned, “I’m sorry you see her future possibilities in such a manner, but there’s no changing it. Fate isn’t fate, and if she’s to die-“
“She will not die! I am your king-“ Archimedes began, voice raising slightly, and the two continued to bicker.
“Mama, why is daddy arguing with the mean guy?” Her soft, childish life questioned, little eyes as wide and clueless as ever. Frizzy raven hair and curious, inquisitive blue eyes, with soft, pale skin and a very tiny tiara on her head. She was around 2, an educated, though hard to understand child. In less than a month, her aren’t sure would lose the throne.
“A prophecy, baby, I’ve seen some dreary things in the future. But don’t worry, you’ll find the right path.” She kneeled beside Le-no, Sybil, and placed her hand on the child’s cheek, eyes almost watering, “And maybe, hopefully, I’m wrong, and the future will never be that way. Maybe you can be happy, Sybil, I have no clue how they would find the curse, it’s been buried for years, maybe it’s just a silly fairytale, baby.”
The king and the dark magic merchant argued for a while longer, before the man relented. He claimed he knew of someone who attempted the journey, and how one of their belongings was that of a statuette of a Lion, with the symbol of Nemea, the forbidden city laid upon it’s front. He claimed it was a myth, but also saw the same things in the future.
A little statuette is what they bought that day, a clue, the merchant said, one of dark magic and potions, the enchantment would be a clue. On it’s front was a matching rune.
“I already am happy-“ She weakly began to defend, though happy for some reason, to be with her family. Something in her heart wasn’t tugging at her, and she heard an unfamiliar voice.
“Leon?” Who was that?
“LEON!”
“Leon!” She heard a voice behind her, fighting back emotion and biting her tongue. Her parents. Her parents were there. Not...not here? Where was the shop? Where was she?
Oh right. The journey. She must have seen a vision, a memory she had forgotten due to age. She looked at who called her, searching the group.
She glanced at Lyra, who had taken to calling her name. She couldn’t help the saddened, dreary look on her face, though she flashed into a comforting smile. Sometimes her emotions flashed by so quickly, they couldn’t even be caught in the torment.
“I think-“ she started, though she heard thunder in the sky, sure, it had started to get cloudy...but that was unexpected? It wasn’t rainy, and the clouds weren’t even dark. Her words cut off, however, looking up to assure herself. She didn’t see any storms on the horizon..
No, that wasn’t thunder, that was something near her. She caught the movement in the corner of her eye, rocks shaking just within the cave walls. Was it an earthquake? She had no clue, but in her haste, she dropped her gloves, her enchanted ones, mind you, and attempted to scurry back. Fear was a wild motion, and rocks already began tumbling from the top of the tiny cave entrance.
“Run!” She quickly demanded, spotting Lyra’s wide eyes and nod, as the girl backed up. The mountains had already proved delicate in many regards, and were likely cursed in traps. That was one option, the other was one she wouldn’t acknowledge.
Leon dodged the pillar when it too became victim to the torrent of cracks now rummaging the earth under foot, though the ground beneath her seemed sturdy enough, it wasn’t. Every step she took seemed to sprout even more cracks, and her eyes went wild in panic. She had been through daring stunts and situations, but such things as this had never happened. Her fear didn’t prompt the cracks to run further, usually, she didn’t have to worry, she was usually just an irritated person. But this was likely a mixture of cursed lands and power.
In the front of her mind, she remembered hearing her parents. They knew. They knew something was going to happen, of course they did, her mother was a seer. They couldn’t tell the direct path, but they knew this was an option. And it was her fault.
She had almost made it back to the company of her group when the ground beneath her feet crumbled, a miss-step upon the fragile Earth and cracks sending her into the dark depths below, where water could be heard, running. That was, before the cracks continued a path for the other members of the group. Almost as if the area was cursed somehow. A landslide, it was now, as one rock had collapsed, and now many others were too.
Whatever it was, escape was easy, just to the left, but some wouldn’t be able to make it, likely would be the case.

Zacharias trudged up the mountainside with the others, looking down as they scaled the narrow path. He had idly resorted to braiding his long hair a few moments before, cursing internally at the wind. The air was thin, crisp, and would occasionally burst around the team, threatening to careen a member off the cliffside. Lyra had almost fallen victim to that sort of fate, and she had seemed shaken initially. Whenever he looked at the young maid, though, her gaze seemed to have transformed into that of determination.
And every now and then, though he hated to admit it, Zacharias stole a glance behind him to check on Zelos and Leon. They seemed to be doing fine, and even if they weren't, Zach found it unlikely that Leon would admit so. No doubt she would hide her pain or shortness of breath, just as Zach was doing at that moment. He wasn't exactly unfit, per se, but he could do to gain a few pounds. The group stopped. Zach furrowed his brows, approaching the front of the group alongside Leon. A cave.
Lyra chirped up, but upon closer inspection of the entrance, it became obvious that this was no ordinary void.
"What if something's down there?" Zach inquired seriously, slowly stepping up to the runes that were inscribed upon the pillars. Leon had taken off her gloves and was inspecting them curiously. For a moment she seemed to have been lost in her own world, and Zach felt her name forming in his throat. What was this, concern?
Leon snapped back into reality, and she was just about to say something, too, when cracks of thunder echoed around them, almost as if...
"Run!" Leon had shouted, and Zach didn't need to be told twice. He began to back up, but his foot lodged in between one of the ever growing cracks beneath them. Zacharias stumbled and fell, eyes wide in horror as he felt the very earth sink down at an alarming rate. A hole into a raging river below had formed at the entrance of the cave, and was slowly but surely expanding. The spindly tendrils stretched out, crawling up the cliffside a ways, and numerous large boulders cascaded menacingly down the mountain.
Seeing as he was currently unable to move, this proved a problem for Zach. His gaze focused on one of the boulders, which seemed to be directing itself straight towards him. Panic set in, and his right hand instinctively raised itself up.
"Leon!" He called out, wanting to have said something before he was inevitably crushed by the landslide. But the boulder - influenced by a burst of telekinetic energy - began swerving to the right of Zach. It lodged itself into the already sinking earth, severely compromising whatever support the ground beneath him previously had. And with that, he was tumbling into the darkness below. Water. He only just registered the thought when he heard a chorus of splashes beneath him. The boulder that had almost crushed him hit the water like a tor****, breaking the surface tension and aerating the river just enough for him to receive a rather smooth landing. But the shock didn't come in the sudden change in density, it came in the sudden change of temperature. Oh, and the fact that he was now unable to breathe. Zach opened his eyes, registered light above and directing himself towards it. When he burst out of the surface, however, the river had already managed to sweep him further into the darkness.
It was a blessing and a curse. Being swept away meant he was safe from falling rocks, but now he seemed to be alone and the darkness was all-encompassing.
"Leon!" Zach called out again, shivering. He had just gotten a glimpse of her falling in before him. Where was she?
Fear enveloped the boy, and he swiveled around while wading through the water, eyes flitting across the landscape to no avail.
"Leon!" He screamed, and a dark thought entered his mind. What if she had been crushed by a fallen rock? Or knocked unconscious, unable to swim? No, no, no, no...

Thankfully the mountain paths had not been too gruelling for anyone involved, and the breakfast that Isabella helped Lyra and Drusilla make was paying off now, the group having that extra reserve of energy for the long journey ahead.
While the others maybe saw this as a chore, Isabella tried to see the exciting side. This was adventure. The journey ahead was dangerous, definitely, but that felt good for Isabella. Everything back home was so inconsequential. There was nothing exciting, no risk, no exciting reward. It was just the same work day in and day out. She had wanted something different, something new. True adventure. She wanted to be something more. To at least say she’d stepped outside of her familiar little world.
This was that chance.
Some members of the group seemed to be idly chatting, Isabella included. Some of the others were quieter, trying to concentrate and being a little more cautious. Unsurprising, after Lyra almost took a tumble. The path was narrow and a little treacherous in places. Isabella just tried her best not to think about it.
She halted with the rest of the group, watching as Eldred questioned what they should do next, looking to Leon for guidance. And then she watched at the group deliberated, wondering whether the cave held any secrets. And as Leon touched the symbol of the lion.
There was a strange period of silence where Leon seemed lost in another world. Her eyes seemed to be seeing, but not what was happening in front of them. It was like the girl was in some kind of strange trance or looking at something the group couldn’t see. Lyra had called Leon’s name several times before she seemed to check back into reality.
The rumbling beneath the ground startled Isabella, and at Leon’s instruction to run she didn’t need to be told twice. The young woman started to do so, shepherding any members of the group who were around her as she did so, not wanting anyone to be left behind. Perhaps it had slowed her down, but she wasn’t so worried about that.
The boulders kept rushing, no matter how many the girl seemed to dodge, and with each one the ground seemed to grow more and more unstable.
She’d just seen Eldred get to safety and was about to join him, seconds away, when she felt a sudden drop in her stomach as the ground opened beneath her. Her hands uselessly grabbed at empty air, the light above her disappearing until she plunged into freezing, inky water.
Thankfully the water wasn’t extremely deep, it wasn’t difficult even in her shocked state for Isabella to reach the surface of the water. The burning of the icy water, the pure shock of the cold, it didn’t have to last long. The distant light from the cracks above her were enough to make her sure she was swimming in the right direction.
She surfaced, soaked to the skin, blonde hair hanging limp. But she was alive and mostly unhurt. Just generally aching and with a couple of scratches. She’d end up bruising, most likely.
It was dark, but Isabella knew Leon was down here. If she could find the other girl and any others that had fallen that would be a pretty good first step to not dying. Unfortunately she didn’t know what else was down there with them, so she figured it best not to be too noisy or draw excessive attention.
“Leon?” Isabella hissed, following what sounded like footsteps nearby
But then she heard a much louder voice, shouting Leon’s name. She knew that voice, but barely knew the boy to whom it belonged. Still, she knew she should head towards the sound. And there was no use being quiet now.
“Zach?” Isabella called out, moving towards the voice
Okay, so it was at least the three of them down here. Who else might have fallen?
At least if she kept following the sound of Zach’s voice she’d find at least one of her companions soon.
(Okay this isn’t great and it’s likely full of typos or mistakes but I just wanted to get something up)

Zander had been lost in his thoughts as the group trudged through the mountain pass. He couldn't help but feel a tad excited about all of this. If he got out of this alive, Zander planned to write a little book about his adventures. Granted, a few things would have to be switched around.
However, his thoughts were interrupted by a large rumble underneath his feet. He glanced around at the group before the rumbling suddenly got louder and Leon yelled for everyone to run. Without a second thought, Zander dashes forward moving as fast as he could as the rocks fell into the growing hole in the earth. Zander nearly fell into the growing hole but managed to catch a sturdy rock and pulls himself up.
Once he was safe, Zander looks back to see the gaping hole before them. He blinked a few times his heart still racing in his chest. "I-Is everyone all right?" He called out still shaken by the sudden event. This wasn't quite the action, he had been hoping for. Still, this would delay the group by a considerable amount. Zander laid on the group thankful that he hadn't died.

The journey was long and tedious for them all, but perhaps it was Zahavi that suffered most from the amount of physical demand. He had always been a sickly boy and he was not much better now that he was almost an adult. His lungs were weak—his body was lightweight and frail, for a man. By the time the group came to a stop, he was well and truly out of breath, sweat beading on his forehead and soaking his shirt, despite the weather being on the cooler side.
He was in the middle of the group, where Eldred had instructed him to stay, as it was far more protected than the front or rear. As such, he was not the first to notice that something wasn’t quite right, but he wasn’t the last, either.
Zahavi felt the earth quake and tremble beneath his feet, the stones shifted, falling to pieces. There was no support where he stood, nothing for the rocks and chucks of dirt to cling to, and it became apparent that he was not the only one in this predicament. While he moved back to safety, he noticed that not all were able to do so. There, trapped and rendered immobile, was Zach. The man was calling for Leon, whether out of worry or for help, he did not know. It didn’t matter.
His legs moved of their own accord, because he could hear his father’s voice in his ears. A good king will die with and for his people. We are not immortal, my dear Avi, and we are no more important than they. For if we cannot give them our lives, why should they give us theirs?
Death was inevitable. It came for all living creatures. His entire life, he was protected from death by the best healers in the kingdom, those times he fell so ill that his body could not move from his bed. It was here now, ever present on his shoulders, while his parents lie sick in their own beds. It was right before him, in the crumbling of stone and rock.
“Zach!” Zahavi ran towards Zach with his arms outstretched, prepared to grab him and haul him back up, but he did not think such a plan through. His fingers brushed the fabric of the man’s shirt, for an instant and only so.
The man was gone, falling, his image growing smaller until it disappeared from sight.
The prince’s body felt so cold, so numb, as he watched the man he might have called a friend one day disappear. He barely registered that the few seconds he spent, staring, the ground was still collapsing beneath his own feet.
Not until it was too late.
He wasn’t a heavy man, but the stability was already compromised, and his weight only kickstarted the section of earth he stood on to break. A deafening sound filled his ears as he lost his footing, as he grasped for the earth he thought was safe to hold onto. He couldn’t even realize that the deafening sound was his own screams of horror. Unbecoming of a future king, but expected of a frightened, sheltered young man.
“Eldred!” He cried, desperation lacing the man’s name, as he reached for him. Reached for his friend, his mentor, the man that was akin to his second father.“Eldred—”
And the earth gave way.
He fell.
Down, down, down—into nothingness.
Cold water flooded his senses, his lungs. Stole the air right from his chest, until he gasped and fought to bring himself to the surface. His shoulder was in agony, hit by a small rock on the way down. It was then, and only then, that he made a startling realization. He couldn’t swim. No, rather, he couldn’t swim in water so deep that moved so fast. It was a struggle to keep his head above the water. With each breath he took, he cried for the members of his group. “Zach!”
Once more, he cried for Eldred, even if the man could no longer hear him. Voice broken as he only just managed to keep his nose and mouth above the current. “Eldred!”

A seizing moment of terror. It broke her heart. Zach, he looked concerned, Lyra was crying out her name, people were terrified. Even the prince was trying to help Zach...
It didn’t last long for her, terror causing her to spiral in the air, trying to find up and down, and mistakenly, she faced the light, a natural, instinctual thing that had been done in seconds.
Her back, among with rocks and other such, hit the water, knocking the air out of her lunges, though nothing seemed to break, she did fall in with rocks, and the water tension had been loosened slightly during her descent. Still, she was disoriented, scared, and shocked. It was freezing cold.
Shocked enough, that with the air knocked out, she couldn’t even dare to attempt to breath or move. Too much had happened at once. Seeing her dead parents in...what was that, a memory? Did the sign trigger it? And what happened? Why did the rocks just tumble like that?
It was too peaceful, painful, yes, but peaceful, she felt something moving her, but couldn’t get her limbs to respond. The aching, chilling feel forced her to remain still, tense, as she tried to wait for the pressure to leave her chest. And when it did, she attempted to breath in.
It wasn’t conscious, it was stupid, but it wasn’t on purpose. But the painful feeling of attempting to breath in the cold water forced her to move, along with the voices. Someone screaming Eldred. Someone was calling out for her, some people were.
She tried to locate directions, up, down, she needed to breath, to find the others. The river was carrying them deeper into the caverns, and the light was already gone. So she instead did what she felt was best.
She swam towards the voices, and when her head broke free after several moment, what was it now, close to a minute of just remaining shocked and paralyzed? She coughed, long, hard, coughs, spitting out water, and trying to locate her companions. She heard Zach. Why was he in here? Was he dying?
Was the...was the prince in there?
Despite being drenched, she couldn’t see anything, and at this rate, they would drown, lost and in a cave. “Zach!” She yelled out, already frantic enough. She was lost, and disoriented, and horribly worried. “Zahavi? Isabella?” She questioned, coughing some more. It was dark, and she mindlessly lifted some water out with her hydrokinesis, helplessly launching it in different directions, until she heard a tiny splash. She dove back under the water, swimming in the direction she heard it, before clambering up onto a rock shelf, she coughed, though immediately shivered, “Follow my voice!” She instructed, the pain rendering her lungs feeling tattered, her body cold.
She sat, hands on her knees, curled into a shivering ball, continuing her little calls in futile hope that they could follow, could be saved.

Due to being swept downstream, the threat of falling rocks had mostly subsided. But in this unknown world that Zach had found himself in, a host of new challenges presented themselves. He needed land, he needed to regroup with the others, and he needed... Damnit! He thought, vainly pounding a fist into the water. He needed light.
The frigid environment had shocked his muscles, but had also invigorated him in a sense. He felt as though a bout of energy had suddenly surged through him.
And then he heard the voices.
The prince was in trouble. That was all Zach was able to register before he reflexively began to swim against the current. Zahavi had fallen in only seconds after he had, and Zach was only able to locate the boy through his strangled cries.
"Zahavi!" He called out, reaching for him in the darkness. A slight touch of skin told him that he'd found the prince. Instinctively, Zacharias clung to the hand that he had just grazed, pulling Zahavi closer until he was able to wrap his left arm around him. Leon's shouts were ricocheting against the walls of the cave, and Zacharias turned around in search of her. No luck, but he did as she said.
And with the young prince in tow, Zach reached his right hand to the shoreline - or wherever Leon seemed to be - and allowed a surge of energy to propel them in her direction. The pair washed up against the bank rather forcefully, and Zacharias clung to Zahavi, intent on not losing him to the raging current. But together they were able to sort of ungracefully flop onto the rocky shore.
Zacharias breathed out a momentary sigh as he rolled onto his back, which only led to a coughing fit. Somewhere in the process he had inevitable swallowed the murky water.
