Mintpaw comes down with a cold one morning, though insists on wanting to battle train. However, Windfern barges in and says it is bad for her health and a danger if she trains with a cold. Mintpaw shouts at her that she’s not her mother and she doesn’t know how the loss of her brother affected her. However, Windfern knows exactly what it is like, having lost Snakekit, Piperkit moons ago, Frostkit and Mistykit also seems a time away, however, Willowfoot and Plumdapple seeming more recent and painful towards her. However, Heatgkit affected her the most, after finally finding a tom to settle down with (in secret) and Heathkit. Mintpaw storms off, but swears she can hear Windfern whisper “but I am.” But she thinks it may be an illusion of her mind, and turns to ask Windfern what she was going to say, but the elder is already gone. Windfern hesitantly walks up to the two apprentices while they are eating, giving them a reassuring smile. “What do YOU want?!” Shawpaw snaps at Windfern, her lip slightly curled at the grey tabby.
“I just wanted to talk to you.” Windfern’s voice comes out in a struggle, and her ears drop.
“We’re all ears.” Mintpaw says less snappily, although her voice is firm and curt.
“You know, how you were talking about your brother-“ The elder begins, but is stopped by Shawpaw.
“Don’t you dare talk about our brother like that! It was your fault he got killed. You never took full responsibility of us as our foster mother!”
Windfern is left trembling, wondering wether it was ever a good idea. “You see, I have shared your loss.”
Shawpaw and Mintpaw grunt at each other, suggesting she should go on.
“I left the Clan to be a loner with my mate for a while. Why? I’m not going to say. Three kits were found at the border when I left. Does that not bring your suspicion?” Windfern narrows her eyes and her secret daughters, and Mintpaw is first to come to recognisation.
The pale tabby apprentice comes up to Windfern hesitantly, and presses muzzles with her. Shawpaw does the same, although uncomfortably.
“So who’s our father?” Shawpaw asks her, and Windfern takes a deep breath.

However, when Wibdfern is sitting with Shawpaw and Mintpaw, she accidentally spills a clue of that their father “could never get his face out the herb pile” This news also spreads like wildfire, and Simon decides to not exile whoever the father may be, or Windfern. As it seems she has finally found happiness. Some cats accuse Stormwing of being the father. When chatting with Beefang, Stormwing brings it up of who he was accused, and he would never be such a traitor and betray his Clan in such a disgusting way. While Stormwing’s head is turned, Beefang wails silently, knowing he wants to be with his family, but he cannot as it would be too much of a risk, and he would be called a traitor. The cats are sleeping when Windfern makes the alarm that Beefang has gone missing. Frantically, they search for him. Dapplepaw is the one to make a discovery, Finding Beefang’s body jammed underneath a tree branch. The cats stare at his body gormlessly, including Windfern, who seems unusually upset. Shawpaw and Mintpaw can only put two and two together to realise he might be their father. Shocked, Mintpaw accidentally spills out her thoughts, and the cats all stare towards her. Windfern gives a defeated nod, and her secret is revealed. Not to mention she is expecting another litter with Beefang too. Windfern, heartbroken at two of her kits deaths, suddenly died of a heart attack. The grey tabby body lay in the clearing, many staring upon it.
“Windfern was a kind and loving cat.” Simon starts, and is interrupted by Stormwing.
“She gave freedom to medicine cats who wants kits.”
“She’s been a mother to many of this Clan.” Slatemist murmurs amongst the crowd, Shawfrost nodding in grief.
“Although she may not have been there from the beginning for me- she’s my mother.”
Suddenly, a brown tabby rushes into camp, wondering what the commotion is about.
“Who has died?” He asks, stepping forward, then notices the body.
“I’m so sorry Breezebounce.” Flutterheart nudges him gently, and Shawfrost and Bluepool crowd with him.
“Have the kits been told?” He replies, glancing to the nursery.
Bluepool replies with a shake of her head.
“I’ll tell them.” Breezebounce sighs, walking to the nursery.
“Windfern, Oceancloud, Frostkit, Mistykit, Mintfoot, Heathkit, Piperkit, Plumdapple, Snakekit, Willowfoot...” He chokes slightly at the last name, his sisters, not mentioned in moons.

Daisykit begins to have nightmares of a cat killing someone, and she doesn’t know who it is. She tells her older sister Bluepool, who tells Simon. Heathkit, Fernkit and Willowkit discover a secret tunnel at the back of the nursery, and they are yet to follow where it leads. Breezebounce thanks Flutterheart for her support, and notices that Shawfrost names her kits after Windfern and his sister and brother. Touched, her thanks her for naming one of her kits after Willowfoot, even though she never personally knew the she cat. Heathkit goes missing, but her sisters say nothing, wanting to keep the tunnels a secret. Currantkit and Robinkit become apprentices, meanwhile Cloverpaw and Wolfpaw become warriors. Boulderpaw begins to feel more left out by Breezebounce as he spoils Daisypaw and Toadpaw. Breezebounce also spoils Boulderpaw, but the tom rejects his offerings and takes a walk in the forest. Toadpaw begins to get worried for his brother, and keeps an eyes on him. A reoccurring dream of his is where a cat kills someone, although he cannot see who because of the shadows.
