I don't mean to hijack the conversation or anything but, you make a good point Mint. That's kinda why I like to watch the anime adaptation first before reading the manga, because with all of the voice acting, soundtrack and colors, it just seems kind of better at telling you how you're supposed to feel? Or maybe that's just me lol. I know I have trouble deciphering the tone sometimes when reading manga.

Deciphering tone is also the work of the translator. Could've just been a subtlety in Japanese that didn't quite make it over.

Anyone here caught up with the Shield Hero anime? The newest episode is SO GOOD.
We finally get justice for Naofumi, and honestly that's all I ever wanted. The first Princess got what she deserved, as did the trash king.

I'm in the middle of binging HxH, so Shield Hero will have to wait. I won't appreciate the show as much if I'm more invested in another series.

It's pretty good, I'd recommend it if you guys have some free time! It's almost over, so you could wait a few weeks and binge it as well.

It's an isekai, but not as obnoxious about it as SAO. I like what they did with it, but if you don't like 'stuck in another world' anime you might not like it ^^

Oof, I feel your pain. The Chimera Ant arc is really good, but also REALLY emotionally draining. Yeah, no anime has ever been as emotionally draining as HxH Chimera Ant arc for me. Except perhaps Angel Beats. Wow, that was a long time ago that I watched that anime... I hated watching Gon just have a slow and inevitable mental breakdown. The deaths of Meruem and Komugi too.... like, damn. Even though I could predict their deaths, I got emotionally invested in them anyway.
HxH references a lot of irl politics and social issues. I wonder if that is done on purpose, or if they were just used as inspiration. (Rose bomb/nuclear weapons, Ging/absence of father due to intense professional life, Zoldyck family/parents enforcing their high expectations with isolation and violence, etc) |

Yeah, their death really got me. The whole arc was just one emotional stab after the other. Especially in the end where Gon ends up like that. Killua doing anything to save him was really heartwarming. And the scene where Ging got punched I was SO HAPPY. It's what he deserved.

I think it was! Hxh tackles a lot of real world problems, and it think it makes it really interesting. It makes the characters a lot more relatable. One thing I think is very interesting is Gons morality. Like, he's not exactly morally sound. He'll still kill people, and will really only protect those who are close to him for the most part. Really different than your average MC lol |

My favorite characters... I don't know, I like all characters that are really well fleshed out, and I think HxH does that with most everyone. I feel most connected to Kurapika, though. Unfortunately he just got that Phantom Troupe arc in the middle, and made a couple appearances towards the end.
Killua is cool tooโin most other stories, he would become the main character, but I like the producer's choice in keeping him a side character. He's grown a lot, and you see more towards the middle and ending that Killua's primary goal is just to protect the ones he loves. Ultimate support. I've seen this character trope before, but not that often.
I'm pretty sure most HxH characters don't have the best morals. Kurapika is going all-out on revenge, Killua is a (reformed) assassin, and you already made the point for Gon. Especially during the Chimera Ant arc, I think most of the humans understood that both sides were legitimate and "good" in their own ways, but they were fighting a war and had no choice but to take down the king. |

I'd argue that Killua is a main character tbh, but I get what you mean! Gon is a good buffer to his personality and growth. I think Killua has probably been my favorite from the beginning, since he's so loyal and good. But I'd also die for Leorio, the forgotten fourth one, and probably the best character morally in the entire series lol.
And yeah, Togashi is fantastic at making a character more than just black and white, or good and evil.
Also, can I just say that the animation in the 2011 version is fantastic!! I absolutely love the detail they put into the fights scenes especially. |

Oh, and I forgot about Illumi, the ultimate villain in Killua's story. I wonder about his backstory a lot.
You're right on the fight scenes part: I've seen some other anime that just skim over fast-moving characters in battle, but HxH really gets those details. I was always immersed in the action, and the animation/soundtrack always added to the mood.
I watched the first couple episodes again. The character development in HxH is real. How they've changed since the start.... How they've grown. |

They really grew so much T-T I'm so proud. Another thing Hxh is fantastic at is the power system. It makes sense, and every character is more or less held to it. It's not like other shounen where either the power system makes no sense, or where the characters just refuse to follow it.
Oh, in other news I drew something to celebrate pride month! It's a redraw of something I did last year that people seemed to like. I will HC Todoroki as gay until the day I die.
