Since it's the new year, I'm curious what were your favorite anime of the season! Just a favorite, or favorites from each category ^^ I need to look back on what I've seen and judge them, but I am interested in hearing what others think.

I'm not sure which season you mean but I'm gonna go with Summer since that was the last season I watched lol, in which case my favorite is definitely PLANET WIIIIIIITH but you already knew that probably
Might go over everything that was released in 2018 and make a top 10 list just for the hell of it

Ah man, this year's anime were so good! MHA s3, Megalo Box, Wotakoi, Revue Starlight, and Planet With were my favorites from their respective seasons, and I loved Revue Starlight and Planet With enough to add them to my all-time favorites. I haven't really started on the fall season yet other than Irozuku but I think I'm most excited to see Run with the Wind and Tsurune.
What were your favorites, Spark?

I have to agree this year was GREAT for anime! My favorites of the year would probably be BNHA, Saiki Kusuo no ฮจ-nan 2, That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime, Run with the Wind, and probably Cells at Work?? I enjoyed Devilman Crybaby, Banana Fish, and a few more but wouldn't say they were my favorites.
Oh, and have you guys seen Gakuen Handsome?? This is a legit anime lol

That's how the whole anime is and it's amazing. You kinda have to watch it at 4AM to get the real experience tho haha

5 episodes into Asobi Asobase, not only am I bored now but it also starts to get transphobic which is where I draw the line
It definitely isn't the first anime to go down that route and it certainly won't be the last, but either way I'm not into it
Maybe give this one a pass, guys

Ew okay, Asobi Asobase is officially canceled. Which is a shame because the first episode was actually kind of funny (the Detective Conan reference at the end had me dead) but I have zero patience when it comes to anything transphobic or anti-LGBT+
Though I am curious, what exactly makes it transphobic? Spill the tea.

I forgot we have a rule to keep negative stuff about anime in spoilers as well o o f Well, the joke would probably feel different to different people. I can see most people being completely unbothered by it, but if you feel pretty strongly about transphobia (like I do) it might rub you the wrong way. It's not very dramatic since, of course, it's supposed to be a joke. And I get that. But imo questionably offensive jokes should punch upward towards the privileged, rather than downward towards the marginalized. Personally I wasn't exactly offended, but it did leave a bad taste in my mouth that just kinda makes me not want to invest more time into the show, especially since it lost all its humor for me and got really boring anyway. Which is a shame cause the last 4 episodes were really fun! But I digress. I'mma explain the crime but it'll be in another spoiler cause, well, spoilers Olivia is disturbed because she thinks there's a 'boy' in the school, and tells the other girls about it. Apparently she overheard a conversation from a classmate outside her window, where this classmate admitted to having male genitalia to her boyfriend. So the girls start freaking out and going through the possibilities of who it might be. This part disturbs me for two reasons - one, they keep referring to this person as a 'crossdresser' (which, I understand is NOT to be confused with trans, but imo if this person enrolled in an all-girl school and generally refers to herself as a 'she' then she's probably a trans-female, not a crossdresser.) The 3 protagonists are literally just labeling her that way before they even meet her, which feels wrong especially since they seem quite obviously disgusted by it. Two, they immediately consider each masculine-looking female in their school as a potential candidate, which just implies the idea that you're somehow less of a woman because you don't look feminine, which is backwards imo. (There's been some pretty blatant sexist opinions revealed early on in the show, which I ignored then for the sake of comedy but now I'm just,,,over it)
So they go find this classmate and confront her about this, because that's TOTALLY their business to do so (/sarcasm). Turns out the classmate is actually cis-female afterall, and she was just saying that to try to get her boyfriend to break up with her (which,,,I don't want to explain why that annoys me too, but the silver-lining in that part is that the boyfriend was totally willing to accept her anyway so that's cool I guess). Idk, I always worry that maybe I'm making a mountain out of a molehill but hey, can't really help that I get a little passionate when it comes to both LGBT+ issues and sexism. |
