Caster hummed at that, knowing that what the other said made perfect sense. Of course Fred had that burden to carry, and he couldn't imagine how it felt growing up like that, but it was hard for him to sympathize with one of his bullies. Just because he was acting out didn't give him an excuse for what he'd done during school.
"It's hard to believe the stories that I've heard about my dad. He's so... quiet now. Reflective. Obsessive over us following the rules and keeping up the appearance of the perfect children." He admitted, picking at a hang nail on his left thumb, deciding that it was better than looking at the other as he admitted how much his father had changed.
"Scorpius and Pollux act the way they do because that's how everyone expects them to act. Well, for the most part at least, Scorpius can just be like that. He's always been hot headed and bit arrogant," he murmured, brushing some stray hair out of his eyes. His hair was getting a bit long, and if he didn't cut it by the end of the year it'd be long enough for him to pull it into a mini ponytail. Maybe he'd do that. He always wanted to grow out his hair, anyways. This would be a good chance for him to that.
"Hm? What's your idea?" He asked, looking up and his voice was hopeful, clearly wanting to go through with whatever plan his new friend was thinking of.

Hugo nodded thoughtfully "Hmm...Uncle Harry always did say that he thought there was a softer side to Draco and that he never thought he had actually wanted to be a Death Eater. He could have sworn that Draco was going to stay with the Hogwarts students at the Battle of Hogwarts until his parents called him. He was just an arrogant teenager, which isn't anything new. Unfortunately the others thought Harry was too quick to forgive. Especially Uncle George, Aunt Ginny and my dad, who had lost a brother. My mum was a little bit more lenient, like Uncle Harry. Perhaps your dad just feels really guilty about what he did and he just wants to live a quiet and decent life. I can respect that. If only people would let him. It's because of my family - and the Scamanders (since Luna married a Scamander) and Longbottoms - that your family can't make its peace."
When the other boy asked for his idea, Hugo bit his lip "Well, it's a bit risky, and it would take a while, but it's another old family trick, courtesy of Uncle Harry's stories. Harry's dad and his friends became animagi so they could meet in secret? It's dangerous, we'd be unregistered. And we'd have to somehow hide mandrake root in our mouths for a month without anyone noticing..."

Caster blinked, surprised that his uncle Harry believed that, and that he was right. His father did have a softer side, it was just hard for him to show it. He was the more understanding of his parents.
"He's more... understanding than you'd think he was. He was just a kid, when this all happened. I mean, we all are influenced by their ideals in one way or the other," he explained, needing to defend his own father from what he had heard about Draco. He had heard terrible things about his time at Jogwarts, and he wished that there was some way his father could prove himself to the others.
At the mention of becoming an animagus, his eyes flickered with interest. Huh. That was a great idea. It was risky, of course, they could get into big trouble if anyone found out, but he'd be willing to try it.
"We should try it! I have some Mandrake in my bag, I keep it there because I've used it in potions..." his voice trailed off, slinging his bag over and rummaging through, pulling out the mason jar with Mandrake in it.
"So, you really wanna do this? We could not talk for a month so they think we aren't talking, and meet up in a month as our animals? If it works?" He asked, his green eyes lighting up at the prospect of this.

Hugo nodded "Of course we are, which is why my cousins are like they are with your family. I mean, even my grandfather hated your grandfather, since they had great rivalry in the Ministry of Magic and my grandfather was in the Order of the Phoenix and your grandfather was a Death Eater. And that was all before he lost his son. But that doesn't mean that we, uh, have to carry that on. Just because our families have hated each other for generations doesn't mean that we have to. Maybe it's because I never really fitted in with my family anyway."
As Caster asked him if he really wanted to become an animagus, Hugo bit his lip
"But what if we get called on in class, how would we stay silent for a month then? And what if we get caught as unregistered animagi? There's too many places it could go wrong...wait, I sound like my mother. I think we should do it. If it was good enough for Harry Potter's dad, it's good enough for us, right? The Christmas holidays are coming up, I might be the best time to do it then, when there's no classes and we're less likely to need to talk. And then we meet somewhere - I'll find a place on the map and point it out to you - and we should be just fine."

Hugo didn't know how they managed it, but the month passed by in a blur. A blur with a very unpleasant taste in his mouth, but a blur nonetheless. They hadn't been caught and Hugo had managed to find an old abandoned classroom that would be perfect as a place for them to meet, so thus far it was all going according to plan.
Hugo's animagus, perhaps due to his red hair and his shy nature, was a fox. It was the middle of the night - only the caretaker would be up this late - and Hugo was padding along the hallway. He ducked silently into the door of the classroom. He had purposely pushed it ajar earlier that day without anyone noticing, purely for this purpose. He didn't know how big Caster's animagus would be, so he was thankful he had gotten here first and could turn into his human form, meaning could open the door to let Caster inside.
He stepped further into the room and transformed back into a human, thinking anyone would think it was strange if they say two animals sitting in the same room. And it would be difficult because animagi bore some sort of resemblance to their human counterparts, and the headmistress, Professor McGonagall, would know this, being an animagus herself.
Now he only had to wait for Caster. He would be sure to tell his friend what his animal was (if Caster hadn't seen) so they could recognise each other more easily if they had to turn into their animagi forms.
(We have to think of a way for them to get caught at some point. I'm thinking Fred borrows the Marauders Map so he can cause mischief and he sees Caster and Hugo on the map.)

(Oooh I like it!) The month was... quite odd for him. Luckily no one really talked to him so he didn't have a problem with keeping the leaf in his mouth. It tasted terrible, but by the second week he'd gotten used to the foul smelling taste. It was worth it, anyways. He'd be able to meet with his friend after this. Ezra had been wiggling with excitement, wondering what his form would be.
The day came when he finally would be able to try out, see if this spell had worked. It surprised him when he turned into a rather large dog... he'd padded over to a nearby fountain as he'd transformed outside, discovering that he was a pure white Newfoundland dog, his fur matching the color of his hair. He guessed it made sense, the breed was quiet, loving, and calm. They were adaptable.
Letting out a happy huff the massive white dog made his way to the meeting spot. It was an abaonded classroom, one that no one used anymore.
Once the young man made it there he shifted back into his human form, patting off his uniform as if there were dog hairs all over his body. He knocked softly before slipping in, his blank face brightening considerably when he saw his friend, Hugo.
"Did it work?" He breathed, slipping in and looking around, wanting to make sure that no one had seen him, even a ghost. His grey eyes were soft and friendly, his body vibrating with excitement.

(Cool x That can happen anytime, doesn't have to be on their first meeting x Or maybe, since it's the Malfoys who have to find out, Hugo dropped the map and Pollux finds it?)
Hugo waited nervously until he saw a shadowy figure enter the room. A grin broke across his face when he saw it was Caster.
"Yeah," he nodded "I'm a fox. What about you?
Nobody had followed either of them, it would seem. Not even Peeves had seen them. And everyone in the Gryffindor tower had been asleep for a while before Hugo had slipped out of bed, so he was sure none of them were aware he had left. He had too many cousins to want to risk sneaking out while anyone was awake; one of them would have undoubtedly followed him.
The other boy was very excited, and Hugo was certain he looked exactly the same as Caster, he was buzzing with excitement too. He had been waiting a long time for the opportunity and he was finally getting to be able to talk to his friend in peace.
The caretaker must have been in his office, because they couldn't hear anyone roaming the halls. Peeves was causing a ruckus in some distant part of the castle, which was good because it meant he would be busy and wouldn't find them.

"Yeah! Newfoundland dog. But white, like my hair," Caster responded with a grin, ruffling his hair at the mention of it. It was still growing at its typical semi-fast rate, and it was currently at that awkward phase where he couldn't pull it back but it still got in the way of his eyes.
The young Malfoy seemed to be a different person around Hugo, now that they were alone. His shoulders were relaxed, and the grey eyes that hid behind black glasses were bright and friendly, not stony and wary like they usually were.
"I can't believe it actually worked! We could do so much with our forms... maybe even sneak out to Hogsmeade!" He whispered excitedly, clearly happy about being able to have some disguise that would allow him to be friends with Hugo.
Caster made his way over, a grin splitting his face as he say atop the desk, happy that no one paid attention to him when he slipped out. Really, Ravenclaws had the bad habit of not sleeping so others saw him leave but no one really cared. "That nasty leaf was so worth it," he added happily.
(Maybe Fred writes the Malfoys anonymously? I feel like Pollux would know what his parents would do and wouldn't do that to Caster lol)

"Nice!" Hugo said as he perched on the desk next to Caster "I agree, we could totally sneak out, we could go anywhere It's so nice to be able to meet with you freely."
Hugo noticed that Caster did seem to be very different when the two of them were alone. He was much more relaxed. And Hugo knew thay he was probably acting different too. He was usually shy and a little bit soft-spoken and anxious. When he was alone with Caster he would be more gregarious and relaxed.
"The leaf was totally worth it. Nobody noticed I wasn't talking because I'm always so quiet around people anyway. Not even my sister commented on it. Did you manage to get it past Pollux? I guess you two don't share that many classes anyway." Hugo said
He was still listening slightly, alert to the sounds of anyone coming along the hallway. They had to be vigilant, they couldn't afford to have anybody bursting into the room and catching them together. Even if it was just a teacher, they would get into trouble for being out of bed so late at night.
(Okay, the anonymous thing it is x)

"Right? Without any stupid family members glaring at us for doing so. I mean, I know they mean well, but, really? We're big boys now. We can make our own decisions," He grunted, although there was a rather light hearted look in his eyes. He was clearly happy about just being able to do this, and his complaining was only half serious.
He liked seeing this different side of Hugo. Now he was so much more relaxed, more open, less soft spoken, which was interesting to watch. He supposed it was because there was no one there, watching his every single move. Okay, that did sound a lot more creepy than it actually was, but still. It was probably nice to just be normal around someone.
"Yeah, I managed to get it past him. I mean, I think he knows I'm up to something, because, you know, twin sense, but he trusts me not to do anything stupid so he won't pry. I don't really talk around others to begin with, and I learned early on that trying to answer the questions in class would only serve to aggravate my teachers more than to get them to like me.So not talking didn't raise any suspicions," He chuckled, also listening for any signs of anything headed this way. THey'd have to meet outside the castle from now on so they didn't risk getting caught.

"Yeah, I know. Fred has been giving me death glares for weeks, but then he does anyway. He's the typical annoying cousin. I share a dorm with him too, which is absolutely hellish. He always loved messing with me and pranking me. Anyway, he didn't see me leave so it's fine."
Hugo then heard footsteps nearby and Hugo's flame-red head turned to the doorway, rushing behind the door and pulling Caster with him as the door opened and Hugo caught a flash of red hair. Another Weasley. And he didn't doubt who it was.
"Come on out, cuz, I know you're in here. I found the map you nicked from Albus. You and Malfoy can come out now." said Fred "You shouldn't be out of bed"
"I should say the same for you, Fred," Hugo said as he stepped out from their hiding place, knowing the map must have revealed their position.
"Ah, Hugo," tutted Fred "Just when I thought you couldn't sink any lower. Wait until your mother finds out you've not only been hanging out with a Malfoy and stealing from Albus, but breaking school rules as well. Especially since Rose has already secured herself a very good job at the Ministry for when she leaves. You'll be the disgrace of the family compared to your golden-child sister."
"You won't tell my mother anything, Fred"
Hugo jutted out his chin defiantly and looked for all the world like his mother. Well, and his father when he was in an occasional mood. But mainly his mother.
"Maybe I will, maybe I won't" Fred shrugged "But I warned you both to watch your step and you didn't. Just you two wait."
With that, Fred threw the map in Hugo's direction and left the room, looking devious. Hugo didn't like that look. It was the one that always preceded Hugo getting locked in a cupboard or chased by owls or something of the sort.
(Thought I'd do that XD)

Caster snorted in amusement, before frowning and hearing the footsteps. Panic shot through him, and he followed Hugo as they hid behind the door. Maybe it was just a teacher, or someone who didn't have any relation to either of them. He swallowed uncomfortably, although his heart sunk a little bit when he saw the flash of red hair. He pressed his back against the wall, swallowing down his fear.
Then he heard Fred talking and he bristled a little, following Hugo out and seeming to get some courage with him. The smaller Malfoy marched up to Fred, leaving the room, aggravated at his actions. He grabbed the Weasleys robes, his temper getting the best of him yet again. It seemed that this boy brought out the worst in Fred.
"A disgrace? Really? For showing kindness to someone? I thought your family prided themselves on being the good guys. Plus do you even know what your father and his brother pulled in school? Or any of your family members? Because I'm fairly certain they have the record of breaking the most rules in the school." He spat, bristling as he glared up at the other boy. His cheeks were flushed, and it was clear he wasn't used to speaking up against other people.
"Also. My names not Malfoy, it's Caster so stop calling me that," he added, aggravation clear on his features. The Ravenclaw fixed his glasses, a stubborn look in his eyes.

Hugo had moved to stand beside Caster as he spoke to Fred, just wanting to hear what the other boy had to say.
"I'll call you whatever I want," Fred replied "Our fathers did exactly the same. As for my father and his brother, that doesn't matter. That was before our family was in the public eye. Besides, I'm talking about the son of Hermione Granger here. She won't be happy if she thinks for a second that her son isn't taking school as seriously as she did. Hugo here isn't a patch on anyone else in this family. He isn't smart like Rose or good at Quidditch like the Potters, he isn't a prefect, and I'll eat my hat if he gets Head Boy. I doubt Professor McGonagall even knows he exists."
"They said the same thing about my father," Hugo pointed out
"Yes, Hugo," Fred replied "but at least by the time he was your age, Ronald Weasley was a prefect and Gryffindor keeper. He'd killed a troll and risked his life dozens of times. He'd probably already faced Death Eaters too and was training in Dumbledore's Army. You're not your father, Hugo."
"And you'll never be Fred Weasley," Hugo said "No matter how much your father wants you to be."
Fred turned red but turned one last time to Caster.
"Trust me, this little friendship will not be allowed to last. Hugo might be the most useless child in our family, but the worst Weasley is worth more than the best Malfoy. What your family did to ours will not be forgotten. Hugo has very stubborn parents, and the Malfoys have left a very strong impression over the years. I'm just trying to keep the natural order of things. Weasleys and Malfoys are just not meant to be friends."

Caster bristled at the insults being thrown at his friend, and the thin boys hand curled into a fist, his breathing quickening the more angry he got. He really couldn't believe what this kid was saying, was he delusional or something? Because Caster was beginning to think he was. He tipped his head up slightly, a small air of arrogance surrounding him as he studied the other with cold eyes.
"How about we not compare each other with our parents, because none of us are like them? And maybe you've forgotten, Fred, but there hasn't been anything bad happening at Hogwarts for awhile now, so where could have Hugo saved a friend or helped with The DA?" He poInted out, even though he would probably make things a lot worse than better for the two of them. He decided that Fred was his least favorite person in the entire school. His pale cheeks had tinged red, and he felt his chest tighten up as he heard the guy continue.
"And don't you dare say anyone is worth more than th rother, because that's complete and utter bull." He spat, having heard that for about six years now and he was beginning to get tired of it. He swallowed a little, realizing That he'd lost his temper just a little bit. He rubbed his cheeks, trying to hide the angry blush.
"If wenwant to be friends we will be. It shouldn't matter who our families are, and you should stop being so obsessed with your cousins personal life, because, frankly, that's really creepy," he finished weaklY, a glare on his face, still ready to punch the guy.

Fred had turned an even more furious red, but before he could respond, Hugo added in his opinion too.
"Fred, I don't know what's gotten into you, because I know you're a decent kid really, even if you're more like your father than I would like. But I'll tell you right now that just because your father put expectations on you and made you feel like you have to be Uncle Fred, that doesn't mean blood and expectations are everything. You have too much family loyalty for your own good. I know you feel more pressure than the rest of us, but that doesn't mean you get to be a terrible person just so you can prove you're someone that you're not. Stop trying to be Uncle Fred. And stop trying to make us Ron Weasley and Draco Malfoy. We're not. Grow up."
Fred didn't look angry, just shocked. The red drained for his face and for a moment he looked just like a scared fiften year old. Almost on the verge of tears. But his face hardened again.
"You don't know anything, Hugo. And neither do you, Caster Malfoy. My father always says how much he misses Fred. But he isn't talking about me. He forgot to invite me home for Christmas. Neither of you know how it feels to try so hard and still be second-best." said Fred
"Actually, we do, Fred. You've even commented on it, with both of us. It kind of comes with the territory, in our families. We understand. You don't have to be against us." Hugo replied.
"Yes, I do. I do, because I can't let you throw away our family reputation and lose me my friends, who are the only people who say 'Fred Weasley' and actually mean me. I'm not going to lose my friends and disappoint my dad. The only reason he appreciates me is because I'm popular like him and Uncle Fred were. So I'm sorry, Hugo. But I have to do this."
Fred turned again to leave.

At those comments Caster couldn't help but scowl, a little irritated at the whole "woe is me" act, and he let out a small scoff. He knew that it was difficult for Fred, having been named after his dead twin, but, really? He had to cut out the act. Whatever Hugo did wouldn't affect his friends, and he had to stop clinging into his families approval so much.
"Well why don't you stop clinging to your fathers approval so much? Stop trying to be such a terrible person. I'm sorry, but, really? You don't need to cling onto it like your a child. It's difficult, yes, trust me, I get it. How do you think it feels to be the one Malfoy not in Slytherin? Since I was sorted I haven't been invited home for any holidays. And at least you have friends who know that you aren't your name sake, so stop the woe is me act," he snapped, his grey eyes hardening as he said so. He was getting tired of people using excuses just to be cruel. It people didn't like him, hated him, even, then they should just say they dislike him, not hiding behind his families name. It was aggravating.
Of course once the words left his mouth the mousy boys eyes widened and his pale cheeks turned an even ddarker shade of red. Now the faint freckles on his cheeks were painfully obvious, and he actually looked sunburned because of it. Now it crept down his neck and up his ears, and he glanced away, guilt flickering on his features.
He didn't really mean to sound as harsh as he did, and he knew that Fred was hurt by his fathers actions, but he needed to grow up. There were more families than just his that were affected badly by the war, and he needed to learn that. Perhaps it wasn't Casters place, but when people aggravated him he just couldn't hold his tongue.
(Maybe he leaves them alone for awhile, and sends off the letter during Summer, and Caster just shows up at Hugo's doorstep?)

(Ooh, I like it)
"I didn't ask for your opinion," Fred murmured, though there was a lot less anger in his voice now "The relationship between my and my father is complicated enough, as I'm sure my loud-mouthed cousin has told you. You think Hugo's so kind, but he didn't miss a chance to tell you about me and my messed up dad. He seems so nice, but he spills private family stuff to anybody who will listen. I'm not trying to be terrible, I'm trying to live in the real world here. A world where our generation will forever be in the shadows of our parents, and we just have to accept that the world has roles for us that we have to fit into. I'm the son of George Weasley, so my role is to be loud and fun and popular like my dad. I don't do it because of my father's approval, though I will admit that I do want it, childish as it sounds. I do it because that's who I'm supposed to be, because that's the role my dad gave me. That's what our families do. I've met your brothers, they do it too, they be who the world wants them to be. Maybe you two should take a leaf out of their books." Fred responded "If you hate me, I honestly couldn't care less. Call me a terrible person, that's fine. Because I'm not the best person, which is why I play second fiddle to a dead guy. But one day the two of you will have to wake up and realise the world isn't perfect. Now, Caster, Hugo, I'm going to bed. If you have anything else to add, send me an owl, I'll read them in the morning"
Hugo had flushed about the comments about him spilling private family stuff. Fred technically wasn't wrong.
