Caster let out a soft snort at the joke. He'd heard of that story, before. He'd overheard the story before, and, frankly, it was quite amusing.
He began to prepare the special ingredients, not noticing that one of the Gryffindors had sent a jinx their way. He pushed his glasses up again, reminding himself that he'd need to get his glasses changed out, they didn't fit him right.
So when he heard the calm return he glanced up, flinching a little when he heard "protego," his eyes widening when a Gryffindor- Ben, he thought, burst into boils. Was he really wanting to hurt him? The boils didn't seem like some type of innocent prank. He shrunk back into the seat, looking horrified at the fact that this entire thing blew out of proportion, and t was all because of him.
"I-I'm sorry. I didn't... I didn't mean to cause you any trouble. We probably shouldn't work together after this." He murmured, running a hand through his hair before adding th ingredients into the cauldron. His pale cheeks had turned a pale pink, embarrassed at the entire situation. Why couldn't he just be a member of some small, unknown family?
"You won't get in trouble with your parents, will you?" He asked, wanting to make sure that he wasn't going to have any terrible consequences if he'd gotten in trouble.

"In trouble for that?" Hugo replied "No. Ben isn't hurt. My mother might be a little annoyed, but I expect my dad will think it's really funny. It's the kind of thing he would laugh at. But honestly don't worry, Ben doesn't like me much anyway, it's not your fault. I don't think we should stop working together, we make a good team"
As he said the last sentence, the redheaded boy nodded towards their potion, which was coming along perfectly. He didn't want Caster to feel like this was his fault. It was Hugo's really, but he hadn't been able to think of another defensive spell to use at that moment. So Ben had gotten a taste of his own spell. Big deal.
"Besides," Hugo responded "Fred wouldn't dare rat on me. He known that I'm better with a wand than he is so he probably won't risk it."
Truthfully, Fred might rat. But if he did then that was Hugo's problem, not Caster's. And he also knew that Fred didn't intend to tell Ron and Hermione about the spell incident, but he was actually intending on telling them that Hugo was hanging around with a Malfoy kid. Well, Hugo would deal with it either way. It didn't matter what happened. Hermione and Ron were good people, they'd understand if Hugo explained everything.
He did just hate how it had to be this way between their families. Why did Hugo have to be part of a family that had such beef with the Malfoyd?

Caster let out a soft breath of relief at the reassurance he wouldn't get into any trouble. He brushed his feathery white hair out of his eyes, chuckling at the comment of how his father would actually be amused at that little prank. He knew his own would not be. He'd get in so much trouble if he stirred the waters at all with any pranks.
Of course Pollux got away with anything he wanted because he was some kind of golden boy in the family. Athletic, sharp tongued, and practically a mirror of his father st their age to the other students. This was all just an act, after all. Pollux was actually a fairly warm hearted person, it's just everyone expected him to act like their father, so he did so. But not Caster. He'd have trouble if he got caught doing anything against the rules. Why the standards were different he didn't know.
"You really think we work well together?" He asked, perking up at the compliment. He never wanted to maintain the Malfoy image, and since he didn't have much of a temper so he'd never really been considered mean. That didn't stop others from treating him like he was some bully, but he had his own set of standards that he lived by so he rarely retailiated.
He checked the potion, stirring the bubbling cauldron carefully before adding the cat whiskers to it. He sniffed it, smiling at the smell of peppers. He'd always had a thing for spicy foods. (Where should we skip to? Also what should our plot be? Low key I kind of want Casters parents to find out about them and he ends up getting kicked out of his house and stays with Hugo for a bit. It'd be fun to have them interact with the older characters XD like at some point.)

"'Course," Hugo replied a little shyly "Well, I mean, it's your amazing recipe and stuff but you're good to work with. You don't...treat me like a Weasley-Granger. And I'm glad, because I honestly hate all of that. Being hounded all of the time just isn't my style. My sister and my cousins just seem to enjoy it too much. Besides, you didn't ask to be a Malfoy, just like I didn't ask to be a Weasley-Granger. I'm not going to judge you because of your father, or your grandparents. That'd be short-sighted."
He was stirring the potion as he said all of this, focussing on that because he was too shy to look Malfoy in the face while saying such personal stuff.
"I mean, my dad told me not to trust any Malfoys...and my mother hit your father once....but...uh....I don't listen to my dad when he says that stuff. My Uncle Harry says he's been that way ever since Uncle Fred died, so I take what he says with a grain of salt. He's just bitter. I mean, I understand it, but it doesn't mean I need to be like that too."
(sorry if it's short. I totally agree in terms of plot. We'll skip in a little bit because Hugo has said a lot just then. I think after their convo is to a point where we can skip we could skip to the next morning when they get mail owls. Maybe both of their families express anger at their friendship and we can totally start setting up the while Caster-gets-thrown-out thing)

(Sure! XD )
"I heard you were playing nice with the Granger-Weaselys," Pollux growled, his twin practically trapping him between himself and the wall. Caster folded his arms, raising his eyebrow, clearly unimpressed by his brothers little attempt in showing power. He was practically glowering, saying "really?" With his eyes. The two twins stood there, locked in some odd, silent battle for a good two minutes before Pollux rolled his eyes and messed up his twins hair.
"You better know what you're doing, I already told our parents," Pollux muttered irritably, grabbing his brother by the wrist and marching him into a the cafeteria.
"You what?!" Caster squeaked, the horror clear on his face, trying to fight against his brothers hand until he realized it was useless. He felt panic claw at his chest- what would happen? Was he going to get a howler? He hoped to God that wasn't the case.
"We we're just potions partners! I was late for class, so it's not like I actively sought the guy out! There was no point in being rude. He was being nice enough to me!" He protested, trying to pull against his twins wrist again before sighing and allowing it to happen. He was being marxhed to the table. He wasn't baking givnw a choice.
"No point in being rude? It's been six years since we've come here and name one time we've gotten so much as a compliment from any of those families!" He retorted, the mean side of his twin coming out the moment they were seen in the hall. "Now sit. Behave, Terri. I love you," he muttered, ruffling his 'younger' brothers jair and glaring at the Ravenclaws that were sitting and staring. Then he was off and he caught the angry mutters flying around him. Caster sighed, muttering an I love you too before grabbing a plate, imagining some French toast sticks and then nibbling on them, not even looking up when the owls came flying in. It wasn't like he'd be- suddenly a flash of grey caught his eye and he realized that his fathers owl was in front of him with a letter. Great. Just great.
Caster sighed, untying the letter from the Great Horned Owls leg and thanked it, before opening up the letter, a sick feeling in his stomach. He read over the contents, recognizing his fathers neat scrawl. Long story short? His mother was furious that he was associating with the people who ruined the Malfoy name. That he was expected to keep company of better students, better families than those three. That if she heard any more of this there would be dire consequences and his father said he didn't want to be pushed to do that.

"So, Hugo," Rose said on their way down to get breakfast the next morning "I got a very angry owl from Mum and Dad in the middle of the night last night saying that i should keep better control of you and that Mum is very disappointed in me, Why didn't you tell me you were friendly with one of the Malfoy twins? Mum was threatening to make me stay here for Christmas. And not to mention that the Malfoy family has made our family's life hell for generations. Scorpius Malfoy bullied me no end. Draco Malfoy bullied our parents. Lucius and Narcissa Malfoy made their son a Death Eater and were involved in the group who killed Uncle Fred. Have you no sense of family duty? Of loyalty?"
"I'm sorry, Rose, but Caster isn't bad. He-"
"I don't want to hear it! I expect you'll have a letter from Mum and Dad."
Sure enough, a letter came for Hugo at breakfast that day.
"Hugo,
Your mother and I were very disappointed to hear from your cousin Fred that you've been friendly with one of the Malfoy children. We have told you many times to stay away from that family. They are deceptive, conniving and arrogant. And yet you've disobeyed us and made friends with one of them anyway.
I don't think I need to speak about how much the Malfoys have damaged our family. From your mother and I down to your sister. They are bad people, son, and you should distance yourself from them.
You must figure out where your loyalties lie, Hugo. Be careful how you choose, son. Remember which family you are part of. Do not disappoint us again and disgrace our family name, otherwise we will have to discuss consequences, and they will be severe. Please don't make us do that, Hugo, because we love you.
From, Ronald Weasley
Fred was smirking at Hugo from up the table.

(Sounds good to me!)
"Incendio," Caster muttered, tapping the paper lightly with his wand, the annoyance on his features as he finished reading it. Really, why was it their business if he wanted to talk to someone from the Golden Trios lineage? He was nice enough and really, all that they had done was sit next to each other in class, well, that and run into him during that time before... but that didn't matter. Once the letter was fully burnt he stood, forgetting about his half eaten French toast sticks and he left, ignoring the startled looks from his housemates from his setting a letter on fire.
"If I want to be friends with someone, I'll be friends with them," he announced out loud, annoyed that his parents couldn't get over their petty differences. Well. It wasn't that Petty. One of Hugo's uncles had died, but still. Why couldn't they try to get over their differences instead of always hating each other?

"Oh, will you, Malfoy?" snarled a male voice.
Hugo, in the middle of burning his own letter, looked up to see Fred had stood up and was standing in front of Caster Malfoy. He stood up to help but yelped as Rose pulled him back down to his seat, hissing at him to not get involved.
"Well, I think you're wrong there. My cousin might be alright with being friends with someone from your filthy, traitorous family, but that doesn't mean the rest of us will stand idly by and let it happen. He will not betray our family. Believe me when I say that if I give the word, you'll be nothing in this school. Not even your twin will be able to help you when the whole school is chasing you out of the grounds. If you or your twin think you're tough, you can try and take me on. See where if gets you."
"Fred, stop it!" Hugo called out
"Christ, Hugo!" Fred called over his shoulder "Is he that important to you? You're not a Weasley. If you were truly a part of this family you'd keep your fat mouth shut. Your parents are close enough to disowning you as it is"
Hugo quieted but looked enraged as his sister kept him in his seat so that he couldn't go to Caster's aid.

Caster let out a nervous noise when Fred stepped in his way. The thin Ravenclaw attempted to side step, hopefully try to avoid the situation before it even started. Of course that didn't happen, and he flinched at the rather venemous words. Out of the corner of his eye he saw Pollux ready to stand up and fight, but he managed to get his head up, giving him a clear warning to stay out of it. He could fight his own battles.
The youngest Malfoy managed to meet the larger boy in the eye, his jaw setting lightly as he did so.
"First off. I was talking to myself, Weasley. I might not have been talking about your cousin. And if even if I was, he's a big boy. He can make his own decisions, he doesn't need you dictating them. Not only that, but we were partners because I was late for class and he had the only seat open, and I'm not going to risk my grade because of some blood feud. My grades are more important, so why don't you shove off?" He snapped, making another move to get away from Fred before pausing.
"Oh, and your threat about making me nothing at this school? Try another threat because if you haven't already noticed I already am that." He growled, trying not to let his own fear overtake him as he defended himself. His eyes were flashing, and he was pretty scared because he personally hated confrontation.

Fred chuckled "Oh, come on, Malfoy, Hugo just received the exact same letter. Looks like he's not the only one who got ratted on. Perhaps your twin isn't as trustworthy as you would hope. Besides, Peeves told me he saw you two chatting in the corridor before Potions class."
"What?" Hugo was heard to blurt
"Yeah. And you should be thankful that I was kind enough to not mention that in my letter, cuz," Fred responded curtly before continuing "Anyway, Malfoy, at the moment you've been smart enough to stay under the radar, yes. But if you start acting friendly with my cousin again, I'll not just make you invisible, I'll make you hated. Hated beyond your brothers ever were. And that goes for my cousin, too. I'm not afraid to throw him under the bus if it protects the family name. Have to prune the weeds, don't you? I'm surprised your family didn't do some pruning of their own when their precious son didn't even make it into Slytherin"
"Fred, please just stop, okay? You just care about the family name. I thought you cared about family loyalty." Hugo snapped
"I thought you cared about family loyalty, too, Hugo. Watch your step, cuz. And you too, Malfoy."

Malfoys eyes widened a little atmthr mention of peeves and the challenge of his brother not being as loyal as he thought he was being. He eyed the other spitefully, tipping his head up and folding his arms stubbornly. He took another step forward, trying to make his way past the other, swallowing at the comment of weeding out the non Slytherin. He ducked his head, trying not to show how much that comment had truly affected him.
It wasn't like he was used to being treated like he wasn't anything since he was sorted into he "wrong" house. Nope, not at all (cue sarcasm), or that he'd been called a disappointment by many of his family members. Just wait until they found out he was gay.The only one who had treated him the same was his twin, Pollux.
"Really, are you going to stoop down that low? I am well aware that Pollux had written our parents, but he told me he did so beforehand. I knew what to expect when I came to breakfast. With how you're acting it seems like you're the bully, so I'd highly suggest you stop and let me leave." He growled, this time shoving him lightly so he could get past, ignoring the fact that Hugo was stepping in.

At the sight of Caster moving to leave, Hugo was finally able to break from Rose's grip as he moved towards the other boy.
"Maybe I am being a bully," Fred snorted "But your family needs to know how to take it as well as dish it out. Besides, my dad said to give all Malfoys hell. To make my uncle proud. So just you wait, Malfoy."
At this, he moved to let Hugo pass, and Caster moved to try and see if he could follow the Ravenclaw boy.
"This isn't about Uncle Fred," Hugo snapped to his cousin "This is about you being cruel and vindictive. That isn't what being a Weasley is about."
With that he tried to follow Caster, calling after him to wait. He didn't want this to happen. Why did their families have to get in the way of all of this? It wasn't their business who Hugo was friends with.
He was aware that his family - and probably Pollux - would be trying to stop him from talking to Caster. But Hugo wouldn't take no for an answer. Not when he was about to make a proper friend.
He knew how much the comment about him not being in Slytherin had affected Caster, and he didn't really want that at all. He wanted them to be friends, no matter what it meant for their families. What was the worst that could happen?

The Malfoy froze at the threat, actually shivering before reminding himself to keep his posture. He eyed Fred nervously when he realized that he was allowed to leave, clearly ready to take a hit if it came down to it.
"You have no right to "dish out" a punishment, Weasley. You're nothing more than a self righteous (enter word of your choice here)," he responded coldly, trying his best to remain collected as he brushed past, his heart beating out of his chest. He was shaking from the confrontation, always having been a pacifist, and the threat terrified him. What would Fred do to him?
He'd been so caught up in his own thoughts he hadn't heard Hugo calling out for him, nor the few tears that dropped from his face before he caught that one. He brushed them away, reminding himself that a Malfoy didn't lose his composure. His face turned into a stony neutral as he made his way to the library carefully.
Fred had a point. Someone should have weeded him out by now. He was the embarrassment of his family, not only because of him being in Ravenclaw, but the fact that he was always fairly docile by nature. He'd had to learn how to stand up for himself instead of cower, not having the natural confidence his family members were born with.
Caster let out a soft, shaking breath as he leaned against a wall, stopping his journey to the library for a few moments so he could collect himself. Did his father truly say it, and mean it? Or was it just Fred's excuse to bully him without there being any real consequences? Caster let out a shaking breath, putting his hands on his knees, not realizing he'd been running during his little escape. He wheezed a few times, his chest tightening and he had to take a few moments to get his breath before closing his eyes, realizing how bad of an idea it had been to talk to Hugo.

Hugo hadn't heard Fred's expeltive-filled response as he ran after Caster, tearing his arm out of Rose's grip as she tried to catch his wrist. He had to find Caster.
He saw Caster's feet disappearing around a corner and ran after him, not stopping until Caster did. He moved closer to the other boy but not so close that he would feel cornered again. Not that Hugo was anywhere near as intimidating as Fred.
"Caster," Hugo said between catching his own breath "I understand if you never want to speak to me again, if you got a letter anything like mine. But Fred...he...I don't know. He was way out of line. Uncle George would never tell him to do that. He didn't like your dad and he's heartbroken over Uncle Fred, but he isn't he sort to try and get revenge, especially not through his son. He's bluffing, he's not evil. Arrogant, sure, but... I'm sorry. So sorry. I did this to you, I started the conversation. But I just thought you should know that I won't let Fred come after you. We can...we can just avoid each other. I'll talk Fred down. But please don't go thinking I'm anything like him. Or my sister. I...I'm sorry."
He stepped back again, not wanting to stay if Caster didn't want to. He began to turn to head back to the dining hall. If Caster wanted him around then he would say so. He wouldn't stick around if the other boy wanted to stop talking to him.
He felt truly sorry for Caster, and he felt incredibly guilty for what he had done to the other boy. Caster was nice, he didn't deserve all of the trouble Hugo had gotten him into. Nobody deserved that, Hugo thought.
But...he knew it was selfish, but Hugo still hoped that this wasn't the end of their friendship. He didn't really have friends, not proper ones, and he had hoped that Caster could be a friend for him. Yet, how could he expect Caster to be willing to give up his family to stay friends with Hugo? Nobody could ask that of him

Caster jumped lightly at his name, glancing up and looking rather surprised that Hugo had followed him after what his cousin had said. At first his features proved that he was wary, thinking that he was going to start off on him again. But the apology caught him off guard and he blinked, tipping his head to one side, listening to it quietly.
He had himself pressed against the wall, trying to think of a way to get out, twitching his nose in irritation, before he saw how upset Hugo seemed to be. Then his wary gaze softened into an understanding one.
He took a few steps forward, his breathes still wheezing as he hesitantly grabbed the robes gently. He tugged at him warily, wanting him to slow down so he could speak. He bit his lip, unsure what he could really say but thinking quietly.
"N-no I'm sorry. You're right, we shouldn't have talked before, but I don't want anyone dictating whether their friends or not. I can handle Fred. I have for six years, and there's not much he could do to make me miserable. " he said softly, before glancing up, a look of determination on his face.
"I wouldn't blame your uncle if he did, by the way. I'd feel the same if something happened to Pollux," he added, feeling the need to explain that. Maybe that made him a worse person, but he knew he'd be destroyed if he lost his twin. "I mean, I wouldn't encourage bullying, but I can understand how he'd feel, I think," he commented thoughtfully. (I've done that before XD)

(Yeah idek why it isn't like their names are similar XD)
Hugo had been surprised to feel a tugging on his robes, and stopped so he could talk with the other boy. He was so pleased he wanted to talk to him again after everything that happened
"Yeah, well, I mean, twins do have a special connection, I guess" Hugo had smiled "But George definitely wouldn't say that. But seriously, ignore Fred. And Lily. And Rose. And Albus. And all of them. Wow, you really had a lot of people to deal with. We could be friends, sure, but what about your family? Pollux? Won't he tell your parents if he sees us together? Not to mention that we've got like four or five of my relatives to try and avoid?"
Hugo knew George would never have put his son up to bullying. Even if George had changed. He had been lively and mischievous and fun-loving, Hugo's father had told him, before his twin had died. Now only a ghost of George's old self remained. It truly felt like Heorge had lost half of himself in losing his twin, with whom he had done everything.
"Perhaps..." Hugo began after a moment "We meet in secret? We could try and use the Room of Requirement maybe? But maybe not; they'll all know where it is, it was used by Dumbledore's Army"
This was proving harder than Hugo thought. Avoiding so many people around the castle would be very difficult. The library certainly wasn't an option. Perhaps the Room of Requirement really was the best option? He wasn't sure. But what other options did they have? If they were in the same house it would have been a heck of a lot easier, but sadly not.

Caster couldn't help but let out a little laugh at the comment of him having a lot of people to deal with. The guy really had no idea. His family was the worst of it, yeah, but he had a ton of other students who he had to handle as well, and their reactions ranged from a light distrust/disdain to full out hatred just because of his families name.
"I guess there is a connection. I don't know, about your family I mean. Fred seems like he'd make good on his word. I've had a few run ins with him before, Hugo." He said worriedly, glancing up and down the halls worriedly, not wanting any trouble.
"And with Lux... well, he might threaten you a bit because of how your siblings are to us, but, really? He's actually not that bad once you get to know him. Just over protective. He won't tell my parents again, I don't think, unless one of your family members does something. But if we keep it on the down low it should be fine, right?" Caster bit his lip in thought, pushing up his glasses.
"Well, there's other hidden rooms in the castle besides the Room of Requirment. If we could get out hands on the blue print of the school we could probably find somewhere. " he said thoughtfully, resting his head against the wall, trying to think of a way they could get around this. (They could pull a James, Sirius, and Peter and turn themselves into Animagi and meet like that lol.)

(Haha they could X Hopefully without a Peter, because that guy caused a million kinds of trouble XD X I think becoming an animagus is very difficult, though)
"Yeah, I guessed as much," Hugo had responded when Caster said he'd had run-ins with Fred before "I promise that he's...not as horrible as he seems. When it's not your family, he's great. Really funny and mischievous. He's just very intense about the Malfoy family. The whole of my family is. But anyway, I'm glad that Pollux is unlikely to want to hurt me. Though if he did it might make me feel less bad about Fred being so horrid to you."
At he mention of a blueprint of the school, Hugo's face lit up.
"I know! My Uncle Harry once had what is called the Marauder's Map. He passed it on to his son James, but when James left Hogwarts he gave it to Albus. I've seen it. It's a map of the school that shows where everyone is. He never uses it, I don't suppose he'd miss it if I were to borrow it. Just until we find a safe place to meet? I mean, Albus is in his last year anyway, it can't be that useful to him. And he's the Head Boy, so he can wander around at night as he pleases. He doesn't need to see where everyone is all f the time."
It was a good option, he supposed, though it might be hard to stesl the map. He would just have to try his hardest. He cared about stayimg friends with Hugo.

(I know it takes a lot of patience (holding a mandrake leaf in their mouths for a month straight and reciting an incantation every night), I feel like they could pull it off if they wanted too XD. But it's up to you lol.)
He frowned a little st the talk of Fred, the teen having made him incredibly nervous. He didn't quite understand why he had such a hard core hatred of the Malfoy clan, but perhaps there was more to the story than met the eye. He was the one who grew up with a father who lost his second half, he just wished he'd be given a second chance. Actually, scratch that, a chance to begin with. Their family had paid their dues, had enough punishment for what his grandparents (and father, even) had done.
The stories he'd heard of his father were hard to believe. If anything that war had knocked him down a few pegs, and, yes, he was intimidating but in a quiet way. He knew his father regretted his actions, but, in Casters mind, what could had he done? His parents had influenced him in the wrong way. But he was digressing and he needed to listen to his friend for the time being.
"Oh yeah? Well if you could get it for even, like, a half an hour we could figure out a place to meet." He suggested, perking up immediately at the suggestion of this map. He'd love to keep this budding friendship, he could use a friend outside of Pollux.

At the uneasy look Caster had given at the talk of Fred, Caster shrugged "I'm not saying I agree with what he does. But I think it's an unfortunate combination of genetics and circumstances. Fred's dad and his twin had a certain disregard for the rules, and Fred is the same. Take a kid like that and put him in Fred's position... I mean, he's grown up with a majorly depressed dad, right, and to top it off that dad names him after his dead twin? That's kind of a burden, isn't it? Fred always felt his dad saw him as just a replacement for the Fred who died. He doesn't show it, but Fred isn't a happy kid at all. Not that I'm saying he's the only one who grew up with a changed dad. I mean, sorry if this is prying, but there's no way I believe Draco Malfoy is the same as he was when he was a kid."
At the mention of getting the map, Hugo nodded "I can totally do that. And we'll figure out ways to get there too, though I do have some ideas in my head for how to do that already."
