1. You may only catch the first Pokemon you meet in each route/area. 2. Pokemon die when they faint.Set in Johto - in which a trainer starts their journey a little later than some kids do, and they have to navigate the cold truths of the Pokemon world. It's not all sunshine and Butterfrees, but rather, it's possible for Pokemon to die, and revives don't work how they do on television. Luckily, they find a mentor in a family friend who has already learned many of the darker truths.amari; three badges (zephyr, hive & plain) ; mid-level team. Fae the Quilava : level 23 : female : starter (new bark town, gift from elm) moveset: ember, quick attack, flame wheel, smoke screen Coda the Eevee : level 22 : male : goldenrod city (found as a stray) moveset: tackle, quick attack, shadow ball (tm), double team (tm) Rey the Growlithe : level 20 : male : route 36 moveset: bite, ember, flame wheel, reversal (note: prone to illegally using fire fang and headbutt) notes about team: Fae is the only survivor of Whitney's gym.
Tori Sutcliffe : recently turned 18 years old : gender is up to debate, most people use "he/him" and they're fine with that Standing at barely 5', Tori is easily missed. They have light brown skin with freckles dotting over a small nose, and their wide eyes are odd - the left being a light blue, the right being a very deep brown. Their hair is tousled and layered, cut into an undercut, and their bangs sweep from the left to the right. They have a small mole dotting underneath their right eye, and a few more dot over their neck. However, on the subject of their neck, they seem to have some nasty (though faint) scarring; noticeable only to someone who looks closely. Tori's attire generally consists of pale grey skinny jeans with tears in the thighs, calf-high black combat boots, and a long-sleeved black shirt underneath an oversized cream sweater that falls off their shoulders. Both ears are pierced, with small hoops lining the shells of their ears, and three studs in the lobe. An industrial bar is to the left. Personality-wise, they're...well, they're something. Intelligent as all hell and keenly observant, they have a good sense of battle and they know how to handle themselves. That said, with their current losses, they hold a quiet sadness about them. They are serious about the league and the regulations, and they hold a rather deep hatred for Pokemon that pretend they're not murderers. They came into the training world thinking it would be fine, and came out of Whitney's gym a changed person. They're rather jaded, at present, and they're very quiet. They came from a simple background - a breeding one. Their family were originally from Alola and they breed mainly fire-type Pokemon; specifically, Vulpix and Growlithe lines. It's expected that Tori will follow in the footsteps of their father as a fire-type master, and so far, they're not proving anyone wrong.
7 fatalities Silvia the Hoothoot, female, level 17. Caught at level 4 on Route 29, fell victim to Whitney's Miltank. Flutter the Butterfree, female, level 20. Caught at level 3 on Route 30, fell victim to Whitney's Miltank. Venus the Bellsprout, female, level 6. Caught at level 4 on Route 31, fell victim to a wild Pidgey. Fai the Arbok, male, level 23. Caught at level 5 on Route 32, fell victim to Whitney's Miltank. Belle the Hoppip, female, level 17. Caught at level 5 on Route 33, fell victim to Bugsy's Scyther. Psyche the Kadabra, male, level 20. Caught at level 10 on Route 34, fell victim to Whitney's Miltank. Kit the Nidoran, female, level 19. Caught at level 12 on Route 35, fell victim to Whitney's Miltank.
ink and bone; no badges ; low-level team. mistral the murkrow : level 6 : male : starter (blackthorn city, hatched from an egg) moveset: peck, astonish, pursuit, confuse ray (egg move)
William (Will) Zephyr - 17 years old - he/they At 5'6", Will isn't the tallest by far, but certainly isn't all that short either. They have chocolate skin and nearly black curly hair, traits passed down from ancestors that once lived in the furthest reaches of Unova's wild desert, training flying and ground types to protect them from some of the more dangerous encounters they could have. His eyes are a warm blue-grey, good-natured and naive. Their hair is often pulled back into a tail as it's long enough to do so- cheerfully, they'd explain, because flying always messed up loose hair. Many scratches litter Will's arms from young flying-types not used to their own strength scratching him, although they learn to relax their talons after a while. Often, Will merely wears clothes suited to whatever they're doing. While traveling as a trainer, they wear practical clothing- light brown cargo pants with black boots over them, and a loose white shirt with flying types on it. A jacket is brought for whatever occasion- a chilly day, the common colder nights in Johto, or even a very well air conditioned building. Thankfully, Johto's climate- colder than, say, Hoenn or Alola, but warmer than Kalos or Sinnoh- allows for a comfortable temperature at most times without needing to resort to a jacket until nightfall. They wear a necklace with a metal charm on it of a feather to represent their family's business, as well as ears pierced for various flying type themed earrings. He's an enthusiastic person, what can you say? Raised as he was, secluded from many of the truths about the world around them, Will is an innocent teenager at heart. He cries for any bad injuries a Pokemon gets- especially broken wings, since a flying type with wings can easily die like that- and is a bleeding heart, certainly. He's not above spilling his emotions out for anyone to see, and cares for Pokemon like his own children. They have a good eye for battling once started, but can call off battles just because his Pokemon look like something's wrong with them. They easily win Pokemon over because of their attitude and don't get frustrated easily with any stubborn ones- a smile can win one over no matter now long it has to be given. His Pokemon would fight to the death- no matter what- for him eventually, although Will would cry for forever if they knew any of that. They were raised by a family of Flying type breeders over at the Soaring Free Breeding Center in Blackthorn City, where they bred flying types for both transportation and battle- a simple life, and one they loved dearly. They desired to become a Pokemon Trainer after hearing so much about it, and with reluctant joy Will's family sent them off to go join a trainer from another well known breeding family. It is expected for them to learn how to care for Pokemon more and return to eventually own Soaring Free.

i absolutely adore mewitti's take on pokeballs (and pokemon being unable to go in a ball while unconscious), and i adore their take on revives, too. honestly - the entire world is incredible. since you've read past roxanne, you already know about how the pokeballs being registered works and illegal moves and such and honestly that's so good i love this entire world, bro.
oh man rip. flute's pretty impressive, ngl.
ooh boy. i'm gonna rule out hoenn, since while i'm fond of it, it's also where alterity's based and while i'm 100% down for using the world itself, i'd rather not use the same region. but when it comes to favoured regions, hmm. i'm definitely fond of johto, though sinnoh's pretty high in my books, too. the highest, probably. what are your favourites? i feel like (if our trainers don't fail their runs, lul) we could visit multiple regions, but hey, we need a starting place.
speaking of trainers - should we have both of them as new to training or one semi-experienced and the other new who knows so many opportunities i feel like both of them being relatively new (maybe one knows more - e.g: they went to a formal school for it, while the other one needs to get their license before they can start, or something like that) would be fun or or or we could have them fresh outta trainer school with their licenses, and they're about to get their starters or or OR one of them has a few badges and knows how tough it is, and they're sort-of a mentor for one who's just finished trainer school and is having trouble with their starter (who's a wild start, rather than one of the school-issued starters)

the mechanics are super cool!! it reminds me of the illegal pidgeotto that falkner has in his gym. i always got super frustrated when i was new to pokemon because i absolutely love chikorita & its evos, and i'd use them for the flying gym uwu
flute is eh. i was never the best, anyways, and in band it's ride or die, especially for the schools nearby for anything like band or choir or even swim clubs. i used to be a competitive swimmer but. stuff like that sucks the drive out of you
i really dislike sinnoh. the story's okay but i never liked the region itself- it felt wrong and icky, how it was laid out. absolutely love dialga, though. i was really into the first few pokemon mystery dungeon games. johto has a special place in my heart bc it's where i first found my big love of the games. so many of my favorites are in there! alola's interesting because of its layout, and i wouldn't do kanto at least to start just because i've seen too many things in kanto to be too driven with it. unova and kalos are eh. so the best bets for me are either johto or alola.
maybe both had families that worked around pokemon, so they know some but are still really thrown off by the realities of being a trainer? stuff like breeding or grooming or research or their parents are trainers, stuff like that the mentor is a really interesting idea, too! that could be put with the one above if u want

BOY YES illegal evos could be a thing too - a pokemon can evolve 5-10 levels earlier than usual but then they're banned from battling because they'd be too strong, though some people ( - cough - falkner - cough - ) have connections that let them use their pokemon since it's not drastic, please, pidgeotto isn't that strong, father tell them lol he made me wanna die (though i use the cyndaquil line, so all's good)
i like flute a lot bc of how it sounds ehh i dropped outta school lol bad influence for life
OKAY THAT'S FAIR no sinnoh i think i'd prefer something with gyms, so johto sounds like a good plan. it's definitely one of my favourite regions (and it always makes me soft, since gold/silver were my first games, if i remember correctly. i was young as hell at the time and i think it was a couple of years after ruby/sapphire came out, but i had this stupid gameboy colour and i was like "gold and silver!!!" and blam, first games. got me into it young)
ooh, mixing the two would be cool! being able to groom and knowing about egg moves, knowing the general league regulations too, but it's the actual death and violence that shakes them. they meet because of similarities - maybe their families have a connection (possible breeder connections? same egg family with the pokemon they breed?) and so one family goes "hey, my kid just started out training and they're fresh outta school with a wild starter, your kid has a few badges, can they maybe help my kid train?" and it's like sure, let's do this.

haha, falkner's definitely someone like draco malfoy. meanwhile bugsy's the type of person to be super kind and just want to go out and talk to the local bug population
rip,, but flutes certainly sound pretty!! i had a lot of fun with it. my sibling played the trombone and brass instruments are way too loud for me. speaking of the trombone someone i knew had a video of a pep rally where the trombonists did trombone suicides and one broke their trombone l o l
diamond/pearl were my first games. i got into pokemon late but with a lot of passion! soulsilver / heartgold stuck with me the most, though, just because of how beautiful i found it. lugia and hooh, man,,,,, they were my favorites. i only have ss, though, so LUGIA PRIDE. it always made me sad tho bc i love butterfree but only got the weedle line haha
yup! and the more experienced kiddo would already know about all the death and it's so heartbreaking to watch someone else go through this kind of thing. would they be the same age or something? i like the mid to high teens just because i don't think i'd be able to rp younger, but the inexperienced one could either be younger or have stayed with their family for a while. (also do you mind which kid you get bc i'm thinking the inexperienced one bc im more or less inexperienced too with the world stuff)
OH they could also be those ones to find lugia and hooh too! yknow the story in alterity where ppl found out hooh and lugia werent myths

HE IS!! i mean, it's his father's pokemon? the dude must be real favoured in the league, tbh. people complain but nothing gets done DUDE yeah, i bet bugsy & his pokemon have been teaching english to the bugs in ilex forest ;v;
that sounds - that sounds wild. the worst thing i did was remove one of the keys on one of my keyboards just so i didnt have to play it for family, lul.
pokemon has been w me for so long and now im a sad, sad adult. I HAVE SS TOO!! i recently restarted it (': i'm waiting to get the togepi egg because ive genuinely never trained it like, wtf?? time to change that.
yep, theyve definitely lost a few because they were inexperienced and man, it hurts so they're trying to make it hurt less for the newbie probably! maybe a year's difference at most between them? i was thinking somewhere around 17-18, and the inexperienced one couldve paid for the trainer school thing (bc breeder family is obviously rich, LOL) and stuff (': i don't mind which kid i get!! im pretty flexible tbh
ooh that would be cool (and then they gotta release them, feelsbad)

rip,, save them all yeah!! and the bugs have so much more confidence than on other routes bc bugsy taught them that they can actually battle well and all the bugs are proud when another one has gotten caught
lol. i mean the breaking was an accident, but trombone suicides are brutal. the dude accidentally went too far down and hit the handle against the ground
i'm thinking of shiny hunting for a starter, since it's one of the fastest full odds hunts in the games & you can see if you have a shiny just from scrolling through the starters. i have a few shinies, actually! i accidentally killed a shiny audino while grinding in x&y, but i have two i've done myself ^^ a clawitzer from chain fishing in x and a shiny fomantis that i got in moon through sos chaining <3 i named him celery. he's the cutest bby ever
alright! & that would be great. what about even a tutor that went to them so they never went with a group of kids and got told some of the darker things from the world? they'd want the best for their kiddo, after all and they could either have a wild starter or one fresh from breeding. it depends on where they start from- from new bark town, or did they get raised somewhere else and the mentor char heads to new bark because it's a reccomended starting point?
hooh and lugia would be super wise, too, & give them chill life lessons. life advice from legendaries

the illegal pidgeotto that no-one loves except falkner and his father but they don't count CONFIDENT BUG BABIES I CRY
oh my god
i had a shiny female chikorita in soulsilver but i accidentally reset over her after not playing for a while and i (': die every day. i shiny hunt a lot so i have Too Many shinies
ooh, that would be cool. SHELTERED KID LEARNS ABOUT THE DARK SIDE OF THE WORLD, POOR KIDDO. let's say they were raised elsewhere and the recommended start point is new bark - so they can get a league-standard pokedex from elm and so that they can get some free potions and pokeballs to start them off! mentor char goes there because they're asked to help the newcomer, maybe? 'nd newbie has just gotten their pokedex and stuff, so they're set for an adventure. wild or bred starter is chill by me, either of the two <: im still trying to think of what my char's starter wouldve been - kinda torn between one of the prof's starters or a bred starter from their family. LUL. once i've figured that out, though, i'll probably do a thing abt their team and stuff. do you think three badges would be chill - so they're mid-level? 0:
dude yes and then we have the legendary dog trio, too - sorta popping up from time to time.

BUGSY, CLUTCHING HIS CHEST: YOU KILL MY BABIES AND I SLIT UR THROAT let's just say that bugsy is one of the gym leaders with the lowest turnover rate because he cares so much.
i get too excited abt shinies tbh
oh my god that would be wild. flying types, so they can look at falkner in pure disgust, and wonder why he's allowed to do the things he does. that's what i was thinking omg. they agree to go to new bark just because they need time to process - i'm thinking they have one survivor from the battle, and a newcomer onto the team (+one more from the box). it's a hard knock life. yee imma say three, since the third one is whitney >:3 TIME TO.......MAKE MY BABY

bugsy is a good boi
BEAUTIFUL CELERY CHILD FAV
boi
yep - tori's caught all the pokemon they can, but they were called while training rey (their latest catch), so they haven't gone further than route 36 at present. since rey is a complete wild (as in, he's barely had human contact), they're struggling with him. he uses illegal moves and tori does not appreciate
suicune hates him. it's confirmed.
anyway i think im all done with tori - their gender is "whatever u want, i dont care" and they have seven casualties. they made some huge mistakes (though five of those were to whitney)

i love and appreciate him
I MEAN, IT DOES, BUT ALSO. DONT MAKE ME THINK ABT THAT.
thenk thenk, im gonna have some fun with tori. they have a huge soft spot for puppy-like and cat-like pokemon, and they like fire-types way too much (but they wont admit it bc that would be following in their father's footsteps). oooh, murkrow would be interesting tbh.
LOL tbh, tori's gonna dote on entei. FIRE-TYPE PUPPER. they have no interest in suicune (but hey, a legendary's a legendary)

poor baby raikou
so so "dance of the sacred beasts" from the hgss soundtrack is such a good track to get the general feel of tori? and also tori can dance (':

"I don't particularly want to go back there."
Fae's words were blunt, her head lifting from where it had been resting on Tori's shoulder. She'd draped herself over their shoulders, made herself comfortable for the journey ahead. They'd had to backtrack from the route they'd been on to Goldenrod City so that they could find the 'Fliers for Hire' place, and now they were waiting. Patiently. Because that was all that could be done, really. The other two Pokemon that Tori kept with them were in their Pokeballs - one would likely run off and get into trouble, the other was wild and would be taken away by Pokemon Control. Nothing new there, then. At least Fae could behave herself enough to wait in line.
"Me neither," they said softly, reaching up to take the Quilava from their shoulders and set her down on the ground again. "But it's Elm, and he's the reason you're with me, so I suppose I have to go."
"Geh."
That was the end of that conversation, Tori supposed. They glanced down at Fae for a few moments, and the second their name was called with a Pidgeot that was ready to go to Cherrygrove, they recalled their Pokemon back to the Pokeball, and focused on the journey ahead. It was shorter than the journey up to Goldenrod due to the ability to use hired Pokemon - but they still didn't appreciate it.
In Cherrygrove, they could let all three of their Pokemon out.
"If your Hoothoot was still here, she'd be a Noctowl, and we coulda flown here on our own," said Coda the second he realised where he was, tail lashing back and forth as he bounced to keep up with his trainer. "She would've been faster and cooler, y'know? Flashy as hell."
"Can't use Fly without the right badge," Fae countered, "it's illegal."
"So's Rey's moves, but he's not in trouble."
"Yes, he is," Tori was quick to intervene. Rey twitched an ear, turning his head to look back at the trio from where he sat in the long grass ahead of them. "He's not supposed to use those moves, and I'm trying to get him out of the habit."
"They killed five Pokemon in the span of one battle, and yet they try to teach me my own moveset. This isn't right," his gaze was fixed firmly on Fae. She glanced at him calmly, but walked past him without a second thought. The mention had settled Coda into a sudden bout of quietness, and though Tori could not understand what had just been said, they had a bad feeling. The mood that settled was not a good one.
The current team on hand was not...steady. A Quilava, an Eevee, and a Growlithe could not even dent the league - though Coda could certainly make easy work of Morty's gym. There was the lack of damage from Ghost moves, and the strength in the moves he knew - but it wasn't worth it. They weren't strong enough. The recent losses were harsh on them all, but Tori...they didn't know if they were allowed to mourn. They had sent those Pokemon out there expecting them to be able to stall, at the very least, but they had just been killed.
Whitney's Miltank had been so nice to them before, too. She'd laughed with them and had taught them about some of the local medicine, had talked about the rest of the region and how she wanted to visit other places. And then, in the gym, she had slaughtered Pokemon after Pokemon.
Rumours had said that Whitney's gym was a murderous one, but Tori hadn't taken them seriously. Both Whitney and the Miltank had been kind, had said don't worry, we won't hurt you. They had lied. Maybe, just maybe, if they had evolved Kit into a Nidorina, more Pokemon would've been spared. But they hadn't considered it, because Kit hadn't wanted to evolve. She had been pretty against it, actually, didn't want to until Tori got hold of a Moon Stone. It had been sheer luck that five Pokemon had chipped down the Miltank so that Fae's final attack could finish her off, but the damage had been done.
Fae did not murder the Miltank, because she had not wanted to be that sort.
They'd accidentally killed Bugsy's Kakuna, had felt awful about it. Made a promise not to kill other Pokemon unless it was absolutely necessary. It felt like they were being mocked when the Miltank had torn them apart. It hadn't been illegal kills, either. It was league-regulated. Whitney wouldn't have gotten away with it. The judge's Espeon had said that it was unintentional and necessary. Tori had said that it was biased and should have been illegal. But it wasn't, and it never would be, and the Gym Leaders had Pokemon die too. Hell, the turnover rate for Leaders was worse.
"Tori," Fae's voice cut through their thoughts, and they glanced down to their partner. She looked up at them with something like concern. "We're at New Bark."
Oh. Without a single encounter, too - not that it mattered. Tori would be fined with overcatching if they caught something else in this area. Maybe they could see what was in Sprout Tower or in the dark cave when going back to Goldenrod, but they weren't sure. There wasn't much worth catching, really. It was with a small sigh that they nodded and reached down to pick up Coda (who complained because his feet hurt), and they stepped into the town. The atmosphere felt different almost immediately - it was calmer than a route, softer than a city or larger town. The town where most trainers started their journey from - and Tori was no exception. They walked towards the Lab and kicked the door open lightly with their foot, ignoring the quiet complaints of the Eevee in their arms.
"Ah, you're here! That was fast!" Elm's surprise was evident. Tori gave him a blank look. "Right, you'll be wanting to know why you're here. Well. I have a new trainer here who's starting a little later than most, just like you - and wouldn't you know, his family is like yours - a breeder family! So...I thought, who else other than Tori to help out?"
Coda gave what sounded like a disgusted sound, but he was quietened when Tori set him on the floor.
"You called me from Goldenrod, where I was about to go to Ecruteak, because you have a new trainer here?"
"Y-yes," now that he considered it thoroughly, Elm didn't seem so sure. "He's promising, I swear! Just like you were!"
Were.
"Where is this kid, then?" asked Tori, arms crossed and weight shifted to one hip.
"I - I called him over, he should be here soon?" a small smile made its way over Elm's face, and his gaze flicked down to Fae. "Oh! Is that the Cyndaquil that I gave you? She's a Quilava now. She's levelled well, then?"
Tori didn't respond, instead choosing to sit at a chair by a table. Coda jumped up onto the table, while Fae simply curled up on the ground. Rey, on the other hand, scented around the Lab without much of a care for the scientists giving him wary looks - he had never been here before, and so it was only natural that he wanted to explore. The Growlithe was fresh from the wild, hadn't had much experience with humans. Hell, he was only a higher level already because Tori had been eager to stop the fatalities. They wanted their Pokemon safe (though it didn't seem to be working).
They hadn't had time to mourn before Elm had called them. Silvia, Flutter, Fai, Psyche, and Kit. One after the other, with no chance. They shouldn't have died - it was unfair. God. None of them had been fresh to the team, either. Silvia, Flutter, and Fai had all been on the team since Falkner's gym. They had been there when Belle was caught by Scyther, they had been there during the trek through Ilex Forest, had made sure that Tori was always safe - and now, just like that, they were gone. It made them feel sick. No-one ever told kids about the dangers of being a trainer - about how high the death rate was, about how unconscious Pokemon couldn't be recalled. About how revives didn't work like how they did on television. The league were cruel and unforgiving, they did not care enough.
After Whitney, Tori had debated quitting. It was still tempting, but...what use would that be? Didn't it mean that their Pokemon's deaths would be in vain? They didn't continue because they were excited, but because they wanted to do themselves and their Pokemon proud, they wanted to see Fae become Johto's strongest Typhlosion, to see their Pokemon overcome the dangers and survive.
Seven fatalities - five of them to Whitney. It felt like a nightmare that would not stop chasing them.
Tori was tired.
