OVER AND OVER (': yep, they'll definitely camp out a lot. tori keeps a sleeping back and pillow with them, and fae constantly asks the question "but what do u do if it rains" also there'll probably be more frequent pkmn centers in (e.g: one or two in a longer route)

“Be sure to stay safe, okay?”
The soft-spoken sentence made Will turn around from where he was checking his bags, smiling softly at his younger sister. “I’ll be fine, flower,” he murmured, crouching down to accept a tight hug. “I’ll be back before you know it, okay? Take care of the new fledglings for me. Tempest is a bit protective of her children, but all Pidgeots are like that with their young.”
“Why?” His little sister- Daisy- stared at him with her child’s eyes, so young. She was only seven, and already learning the family business- and he laughed and kissed her forehead at the question.
“Young Pidgeys are so small, it takes a lot for the parents to let anyone else touch them. Other Pokemon like to prey on them, so the parents have to be as protective as possible to keep them alive.” At her fascinated gaze he chuckled. “Ask mom about it later when you go to see them, alright? I learned everything from her and dad.”
Daisy started to tear up- Will panicked and held her close, mumbling apologies. “I’m so sorry I’m going, but I’ll have Mistral to keep me company, okay? Alright, little flower?”
She peeked over his shoulder to find the Murkrow close, calm in his temperament. She slowly let go of him and nodded, softly whispering “Keep him safe. I love him.” before the Pokemon nodded deeply and she ran off, sniffling.
“You’ll miss her, won’t you.” Mistral’s voice was quiet, paying tribute to the moment. It wasn’t a question- it was a simple statement that Will only answered with a nod while he stood up, putting his bag on his back while the Murkrow stood there. The dark type cawed softly soon after and flew out of one of the open windows- the chilly day was perfect for flying in the mountains, and after all, Will would be taking a family Pokemon there.
The Braviary stood near the edge of the takeoff zone, looking out over the mountainous region. New Bark Town was their destination- somewhere Will could start his trainer journey and meet someone who’d travel with him. His goodbyes over with, his breakfast eaten and snacks packed in his bag- he walked up to the large Pokemon where Mistral was already waiting.
“Are you ready?” The valiant Pokemon turned to settle a striking eye upon him, tilting their head with the wisdom of age. “Your first flight is near.”
“I’m as ready as I can be,” Will grinned, looking back at Soaring Free behind him. “But this isn’t my first flight. You know that, right?”
“It’s your first challenge,” Mistral cawed dryly, rolling his eyes and making Will huff. “You should know this by now. Your family breeds us Flying types and we all use phrases like that.”
Since he still had some of his pride left, William wisely settled onto the Braviary, and they were off.
It was so much warmer, here. Will couldn’t quite understand it- obviously, they weren’t in the mountains, but still. It was just so….warm.
“Get used to it,” Mistral snapped from his position flying next to them- aside from short breaks, he had been flying for most of the hours here. It was near mid-day at the moment. “It’s not the mountains and it’s not morning or night. Don’t be dumb.”
He just laughed as they touched down on a relatively clear spot, swinging off the elegant bird after they settled.
“May the wind be calm,” Braviary said to them, making them nod deeply and hug the giant.
“Have a good flight back,” they hummed simply, patting down any ruffled feathers from the flight even as they sniffed. The unexpected emotion- he was a long way from home now. He wouldn’t see Daisy or the other birds for a long time. He wouldn’t wimp out, though. He was doing this for a reason! He had to mature somehow!
As the Braviary left, though, nothing could stop them from sobbing into their hands.
“Baby,” Mistral muttered, but kept quiet until they recovered.
“Off to the lab here,” Will stated strongly- wiping away the remaining tears. “Let’s go, Mistral!”
According to that man, Elm, the person that would help should be in the lab with him. They walked in there with a wide grin while Mistral walked next to him, eyeing the scientists with narrowed eyes. “Hello, Professor!” He was so cheerful- almost like the sob session earlier had never happened.
Nearby, the Murkrow’s attention had drifted from the scientists to the other Pokemon inside. He said nothing to them, sticking close to his trainer, but gave them a cautious look. They were definitely quite a few levels above him.
“So, who’s the person to help me?” He beamed as he looked from Birch to Tori. “Is it you? It’s nice to meet you, then, if you are. I’m William! Just call me Will, though,” he chuckled, adjusting his hair before continuing to look at both of them.
“Dear Lugia, they’re a mess,” Mistral grumbled, covering his face with a wing in exasperation and quietly groaning.
This would be a disaster, wouldn’t it?

The sudden cheerful tone was a contrast to Tori's quietly mysterious aura - and so Elm looked up and beamed wildly at the kid. He trotted away from his computer and gave a small wave, his mood definitely much higher than it had before.
"Hello, Will!" he laughed, though he seemed a little nervous as Will introduced himself to Tori. "Yes, yes. This is Tori, he's--"
"Tori Sutcliffe," they interrupted coolly, flicking their gaze to Elm only briefly before dismissing him to focus on the kid - Will. "It's nice to meet you too, Will. I'm not sure on how long I'm supposed to stay with you - but I can teach you the basics, I'm sure. When did you graduate?"
From where she sat, Fae looked up at the Murkrow and squinted thoughtfully. When she had lived in the Lab, she had seen images of the dark bird quite often - but she'd never seen one in person. Her gaze, however, quickly flicked away upon realising that Rey was gnawing on some books, oh dear.
"Rey! Don't do that! It's rude, and you'll get Tori into trouble! You don't want that, do you?"
"I don't particularly care," though the Growlithe didn't look amused, he did walk away from the books, trotting back to settle himself next to Tori. He was wild and he knew it - but he didn't mind their presence. They weren't loud like many young trainers from Goldenrod were, and they didn't smell like the city, either. He did, however, glare at Coda. The Eevee may have been a stray previously, but hell if he was gonna be friendly to him.
"Behave," Fae said sharply, hopping up onto Tori's lap before she settled their, sitting calmly so she could tilt her head up to see the newcomer. If Quilavas could smile, she probably would have. Her gaze remained briefly on the trainer - Will - before she turned her gaze on the Murkrow instead. "Hello! It's nice to meet you. I apologise for how sharp our trainer may come off as, but they're not a bad person. Usually. Uh, that said - do you need any help in particular in being a trainer's Pokemon? I was raised with Elm specifically for the purpose of being trained, so I know a lot of things from textbooks."
"Speak English, kids," their tone remained rather neutral, but Fae knew that they were growing irritated with the constant namedrops. She flicked an apologetic glance at them, but didn't say anything. Tori gently lifted her from their lap and set her on the chair, standing up to their (not very impressive) full height, and giving a once over to Will. They shot a look to Elm that he deciphered within seconds, and so the Professor quickly walked away to pick up a Pokedex, some pokeballs, and some potions. He returned quickly and offered the little bag of items plus the Pokedex to Will.
"This is the Pokedex - my own design, rather than the classic Kanto one. It'll record the data of any Pokemon you catch, though you're only licensed to catch one per route, please keep that in mind! There's a hefty overcatching fee," he smiled, "Tori can probably teach you anything else, that's why I call him."

Will paused a little bit, confused by what the other person- Tori- asked before realizing and making a quiet sound back in his throat. “Oh, uh, I had a tutor up in Blackthorn! There wasn’t any chance to go too far from the Pokemon that were being raised until now, since my sister’s finally old enough to help out more. So, um. Yeah. I guess I graduated a few months ago?” He scratched the back of his neck, looking a bit vulnerable before bouncing back.
In the meantime, Mistral leveled his gaze at the Quilava near the other trainer. It was a bit of a shock to see other Pokemon that weren’t flying types- how could one not fly? It must be miserable, to be stuck to the ground. Even Will preferred the heights and the sky to being stuck on low ground like this. The others seemed at home, though, which was strange. He took a step forward to speak to them.
“Hello,” Mistral stated simply, blinking at her. “I was raised with the intention of becoming William’s starter. I haven’t battled much, however. I would be thankful for any advice on what we shall encounter ahead.” He reserved his usual snappishness in the interest of getting information, standing still while Will moved forwards to collect the Pokedex. “What are textbooks?”
“Thank you, Professor,” Will chirped, gladly taking the Pokedex and fitting it into a pouch on his bag. “That’ll be useful! Is there anything else I need to know at the moment, or to get?” They blinked when a scientist came up and helpfully put a few Potions into his bag, along with a few Pokeballs. He thanked them with a wide grin before turning and running a hand through his hair, adjusting the tail and looking down to where Mistral was approaching the Quilava.
“Sir, you have a message from Mr. Pokemon,” a different scientist called out to Professor Elm, rolling their eyes even as they smiled at him. “I’m sure it’s nothing, but you never really know with the man. Best bet would be another Pokemon Egg again. Somehow he keeps finding them.” Taking Elm away from the two and quietly talking, it left Will to look confused before a metaphorical lightbulb made him look over at Tori.
“I was told that your family also runs a breeding center, right? Which one is it?” He got closer, pure curiosity and a naivety shining in his eyes. He was so new to the life of a trainer- painfully obvious to many that looked at him, although Will had no clue himself (as well as Mistral). “And what’s battling like?” He was such a pure soul. Will knew that it would be fun to adventure, to gather badges, to camp out- and all of that was gathered in his shining heart.
Mistral rolled his eyes at his trainer and turned back to the other Pokemon, disgruntled by the two other Pokemon- the Growlithe and the Eevee. They were clearly not as sophisticated- but he knew that he’d be meeting a lot of wild Pokemon. What an adventure, he thought dryly to himself.
