A tutor up in Blackthorn - a tutor? It was no wonder that Elm had asked them to help. Tori had been in the real world for a long time - hell, they'd even been pulled away from their family to go to school in Goldenrod. They'd graduated a few years ago; they'd taken advantage of the cutoff age. Their journey had started just over a year ago. It had taken them much longer to get badges than they had expected, but...they didn't have a time limit, so they could train in-between gyms to their heart's content. They didn't want to challenge another one as they had Whitney - unprepared and off-guard. The Miltank had been so friendly and sweet that they hadn't even considered the danger.
To be tutored - would this kid be aware of the real dangers? Tori wasn't sure, but they weren't too confident. They decided not to respond to that part, simply nodding.
"Ooh," Fae tilted her head to the side, sitting up on her hind legs and nodding. "Textbooks are...books, about things, usually. Tori read to me, and I sorta learned to read from them. Lotsa them are zoology textbooks, which means they're about the Johto wildlife! Did you know that classic Vulpix have squarer muzzles and paler head fur? Their tails grow in faster, too! Domestic Vulpix are pointy-nosed and sometimes have markings, too."
Her switch to English was because she knew that Tori would be annoyed otherwise - it was hard, to be a solo-traveler with no other communication, and so Fae had promised to adapt to include them. It was just fair.
"Oh, my parent's breeding center," they wrinkled their nose a little, "it's the Blazing Hearts Breeding Center. We breed fire types, usually show-class Growlithe and Vulpix, but we also breed traveling Ponyta, and we've recently started breeding and raising Fletchlings so that they can become travel-class Talonflame," they rubbed their arm and shrank back a little. "Our Growlithe and Vulpix are deemed the best in the world," for a moment, Tori paused, before gesturing to Rey. "He's a wild, though. Not one of our lines; you can tell because he has pointed ears and a longer muzzle and legs, and his front claws are always out."
Zoology was their passion. The question about battling, however, made them frown. Their gaze flicked down as they watched Coda play-bow at Rey, tail waving back and forth. The two were...they were decent friends, they supposed. The two of them were both childlike in mind, liked playing and teasing each-other.
"Battling is hard," they said, after a few moments. "You have to pay every scrap of attention to the battlefield, and balance your orders with the power of your Pokemon. It's...easy to accidentally kill your opponent's Pokemon. It's better to K.O them and hope there's a Pokemon Center nearby or a revive," they paused, and shook their head. "Revives don't work how they work on television."
It was one of the first things they'd learned.
Elm returned to the duo with a small, sheepish smile on his face. He glanced to the Pokemon loose in his lab with mild concern (until he saw Fae; he softened right up again after that), and then he looked to Will and nodded.
"My associate, north of Cherrygrove City, has a...discovery for me, and he says it's very important. I know this will delay the start of your journey, but do you mind going there to collect it, and then bring it back? It's probably another Pokemon Egg, but we can't be too careful. He's stating that it's extremely rare," his gaze flicked over to Tori. "And it'll give you some time to readjust to these earlier routes, yes?"
Tori shrugged mildly.

Mistral shifted position at the Quilava’s switch to English, curious before he glanced between her and her trainer. It seemed that he’d have to speak a bit more English now and then. Will had gotten quite good at understanding the language most bird Flying types used- a mixture of adjustments, body language, and sounds. It wasn’t like he could speak it himself, but it was useful for the young bird. Mistral had been learning English for a while now, after getting a complete grasp on the common Pokemon speech, and spoke in clipped tones to the older Pokemon.
“I have been told that the Murkrow up at my home are one of a kind,” he said, his tone the only one he knew how to speak in for English- something that sounded a bit fed up with the world. “They are more…..comfortable? Comfortable with the mountains and the area.” It was all he had to say on the subject. He had never seen what a ‘proper’ Murkrow or Honchkrow looked like- he merely shifted and eyed the two humans while they talked.
“I was at Soaring Free!” Will’s smile was so proud as he talked about his own home. “We breed quite a few Flying types up to battle-class and travel-class. Most of the Pokemon you see at any Fliers for Hire came from our center. Mostly we have birds, although some Pokemon like Gligar and Swablu are also raised.” A warm grin covered his face, although soon after he looked over at the Growlithe and nodded. “That’s pretty cool! Some we have are unique compared to wild or domestic flocks, like Mistral here.”
The young trainer paused for a long moment while Tori spoke again, Mistral watching with some worry. He never really just…..stopped like that. Did he expect anything different? All some of the older Pokemon at the breeding center had talked about was the unforgiving nature of battle. They had retired to have children just because of that- some had physical scars, and other had mental.
Nobody could be safe from the truth, and Mistral was finally realizing that Will had been sheltered his whole life.
Thankfully, his response was put off by the arrival of Elm again. “I’d be- I’d be willing to help,” Will chirped, trying to put off what the other person had told him for as long as possible. “No problem,” he laughed. There was a smile on his face that was trying hard to reach his eyes- and with a wave, he made his goodbyes and left.
He turned to Tori after they were all outside, looking more than a bit offput by the other’s words. “Um…” He shuffled his feet, and Mistral walked closer, worried in his own way for his Trainer. “I don’t get what you mean? Why would you ever accidentally kill someone’s Pokemon? And what do you mean, revives don’t work like on television?” He was getting himself worked up over it, worried at the ominous sounding warning.
Mistral could only sigh, and cover his face with a wing.

Just before they left the building, Tori picked up coda and opened their shoulder-bag to settle him in it, before pulling it closed. The little Eevee's head poked out, and he seemed quite content. There were plenty of purse Eevees around Goldenrod, and he seemed to like the trend - even if he was scruffier. Coda settled comfortably with half-closed eyes, while Rey trotted at Tori's feet, and Fae wandered behind, watching the two humans with narrowed eyes.
Will's naivety didn't surprise Tori - they had been pretty clueless, but they hadn't had help. No-one had been there when a wild Pidgey had come and taken Venus, no-one had been there when Bugsy's Scyther had cut Belle's life short, no-one had been there when five Pokemon had fallen to Whitney's Miltank. Maybe that was Elm's intention - to stop the same thing from happening to Will, but they didn't understand. It was...unfair? They didn't want someone to suffer as they did, but it didn't feel entirely fair that they had to teach someone the ways of the battling world while they, themselves, had struggled through the entire thing.
"As I said - accidentally," they flicked their gaze to Will, raised an eyebrow. "It's happened to me. My second gym badge had one casualty," they paused, swallowed thickly, and looked away. They wouldn't look another person in the eye while admitting this. "My most recent badge had five. Fae was the only survivor. Some moves are just...so powerful that they can kill a Pokemon. Battling can be fatal for the loser; being knocked out means they can't go back to their Pokeball, which means they can't be put to safety while going to get help from a Pokemon Center. If you're far enough, the Pokemon might die before you get there," it had happened to Belle. She could've survived, if she had been able to go to her Pokeball - but the judge's Espeon hadn't been able to wake her up. "In league battling, the judge will usually have a psychic type. It can wake up injured Pokemon so that you can send them back to their Pokeball. It gives your Pokemon a fighting chance," they reached down to pet Coda's soft ears, a habit they'd formed recently. "Revives need to be shattered to work, but they only wake up your Pokemon to recall. It's just...it's a wake-up thing. I think it can work on multiple Pokemon, too - they do it as a prank to wake up sleeping Pokemon around here, the rich kids do, but...yeah, it's like...psychic power, and judge's Pokemon have it, yeah."
Fae gave a small, concerned sound - but Tori ignored her.
"Deaths are common, though. Gym Leaders have the highest turnover rate, but some trainers have a lot of trouble. As I said, I lost five Pokemon - in one battle. To one Pokemon. Usually, it's not a thing that happens often; it almost never happens in low-level teams, and it rarely happens in mid-level. Once you get to the high-levels and elite-levels, fatalities can become more common, if you're not prepared. I wasn't prepared for a single Pokemon, and she ripped through my team."
Tori ran a hand through their hair and kicked a stone out of the way lightly, ignoring a Rattata that gave them a filthy look. Fae huffed with some amusement and apologised briefly to the wild Pokemon.
"You have to be careful of what moves you use, too. You could get suspended or even arrested for illegal moves on a Pokemon; but you probably knew that. Your Murkrow knows egg moves, right?" they glanced over at him, "and Coda knows TM moves. They're fine. What's not fine is when a Growlithe under level twenty-eight uses Fire Fang," they looked down, now, to their Growlithe, who simply flicked an ear and stared back. "Something about safety. For example - a moveset will consist of four moves, and judges in Gyms and other trainers can check the level of your Pokemon and see if it matches up with a move. Just because, say, a Poochyena has teeth, doesn't mean it's allowed to use it before level 13, you get me? This is to try and lessen the deaths."
That was so much talking; their voice was becoming rough already. They stopped and fell silent, giving Will a chance to respond to their info-dumping.

While Tori talked, Will gradually slowed down. His face said it all- clearly wondering what he was getting into. They stayed silent to respect their words and picked up Mistral for some comfort. The bird rested their head against Will’s chest in the universal comforting gesture for his kind, and the teenager smiled softly at the effort. He had raised Mistral and his siblings personally along with their parents to help- quite loose parenting from the Honchkrows, but he supposed that was how most Murkrows grew up a bit… standoffish. Mistral was a softie at heart, just like Will, even if he certainly didn’t speak like it. He held the bird closer while they walked.
“But….but battling shouldn’t have to kill Pokemon?” He sounded hurt, as if he was one of the Pokemon he was talking about. “You have to be lying,” they mumbled, looking down at the Murkrow in their arms. If that happened to him… If Mistral died, he didn’t know what he would do. He already had such a close bond with him. “Yeah, they’ve gotta be lying,” he whispered, just soft enough for Mistral to hear. The way he shifted his wing didn’t look promising, at least for communication. “Right? Right?”
They looked haunted for a long, long while as they went along. He looked around at the Pokemon that wouldn’t come out to speak or maybe even fight a bit, if they were hotheaded- many seemed saddened by the conversation. He ducked his head lower. This couldn’t be the truth.
“To lose Pokemon… friends… to something like this shouldn’t happen,” Will said softly- just loud enough to be heard, along with a sniff. Mistral looked up at him with panicked eyes- he smiled, a shaking grin on his face as he held it all back. “It can’t be common, can it?”
“Um…humans?” Will startled at the sound of a Pokemon speaking up, walking out into the open. He stopped to watch it for a long moment as it looked away, nervously shifting before straightening up. It was a Sentret, one with both ears tilted downwards even as they managed to gather their heart to speak. Will could only smile for a moment- despite his mood, they were adorable, standing on their tail to be a bit taller while they talked to the two.
“I heard what you were talking about,” they said softly, ears twitching while they spoke. It was taking a lot of bravery to speak up, Will knew, and they kept their wavering smile on even with their personal disbelief. “Um. Most of us nearby did. A lot of us have family that went with new trainers on their journeys. Most of them haven’t come back. But we have hope! I have hope! Can I go with you two? My brother left the other day to travel, and I know the, uh, death rate, but. I want to go anyways!” Their nervous confidence made Will sniff again and wipe at their eyes, crouching down. “I’m good at battling, I swear to Ho-Oh and Lugia, and I’ve always wanted to see new places!”
Will glanced over at Tori before crouching down, pushing any tears back and nodding solemnly. “If you want to, I’ll take you,” he said softly, “but you need to be sure and ready. I’m- I’m just starting out. Are you sure you want to go with me?”
“Everyone going along here is new or they’ve already caught someone here,” the Sentret stated confidently, beaming. “I can help! I absolutely want to!”
“Well…” They scratched their head before digging in their bag with one hand, setting Mistral on the ground while they held a Pokeball out.
The Sentret made a short sound almost like a sound of joy before they were captured and sent out, leaping onto Will in their happiness. “Thank you, thank you, thank you! You’re the nicest trainer I’ve ever seen come along here!”
The new trainer was offput- distracted from the previous conversation, they smiled and gave a teary chuckle while the Pokemon climbed on him and made themselves comfortable hanging onto his shoulders. “Do you want a name, or anything?” At their furious nod Will laughed and looked down at Mistral, who seemed glad and amused by the scenario. “You’re a….girl, right?” Another nod. “How about Scout? You seem like the type.”
Bewildered while the newly dubbed Scout cheered, they turned to Tori with wide eyes… before slowly wilting, remembering their conversation.

They weren't going to even bother trying to reason with someone in denial. Tori rolled their eyes upwards and instead kept their hand on Coda's head, glancing to the few Pidgey who seemed to be intent on watching them pass. They'd heard, somewhere, that Pidgey had stronger memory than most people realised. Maybe some of them had been here when Tori had first left on their adventure; that would be something, they supposed. They narrowed their eyes as they tried to see into the trees, but they couldn't pick up even the faintest hint of Hoothoots. Oh well. They knew that some Noctowl were around here - impossible to capture by newbie trainers, but here with their families.
Families that trainers later take into a Gym where a Pokemon knows a rock move.
A small frown crossed their face and they looked down. Rey trotted along quickly, careful to maintain distance away from Will. He didn't like strangers - that was half of the reason he'd survived so long in the wild. However, sensing that he was being watched, the Growlithe glanced up and blinked. Tori looked away.
The Sentret came as a surprise, but they didn't speak. It wasn't their place to. Instead, they waited for the entire thing to go over - they tuned out the conversation. It wasn't surprising that the local Pokemon had heard; Tori wasn't really lowering their voice, after all. Some of the Pokemon around here didn't speak English, and most of them couldn't care less.
"I would be immortal here," Rey said idly.
"The high-leveled and older Pokemon don't come out around humans," they glanced down to him, "the Noctowl and Pidgeot are territorial."
A low huff escaped Rey, but he didn't counter his trainer. Instead, he bounded forward with Fae and walked alongside her; the two got along like siblings, which was an upside, at least. Coda was the odd one out. He probably always would be - it was just one of those things.
Upon realising that Will was looking at them, Tori flicked their gaze and raised an eyebrow. This kid - was just that, really. A kid with no experience in the real world. If this was how he reacted to the talk of Pokemon deaths, then they weren't so sure that he was going to be able to handle the actuality of league involvement. There was nothing to protect the Pokemon from dying - that was just how it was.
"You're going to want to level her so that your Pokemon are around the same level," they paused and rummaged in their bag (causing Coda to complain sleepily) until they found their own Pokedex, and they opened it. It took them a couple of seconds to flick to the Eevee section, and they gestured for Will to come closer. "You can ignore the details, and then if you press this button," they pressed something that looked like a d-pad, and it flicked to another page, "it gives you the stats of the Pokemon your Pokedex is locked onto. In Coda's case, he's level twenty-two, male, and knows Tackle, Quick Attack, Shadow Ball and Double Team," they shrugged idly, "you can check your Sentret's - Scout's - details using that. Leveling is a different matter, though."
"I can explain this part," Rey called out, backing up so that he was walking alongside his trainer again. "Since I have more experience with trainers leveling. Usually, trainers come along and just beat us up - but that guarantees that we'll kill your Pokemon if we're stronger," he shook himself out and hopped over a patch of uneven ground, "most casualties in the wild can be drastically lowered, and most fatalities can be erased entirely if you talk to us. You're guaranteed to find a single Pokemon who can translate between our language and English, though there's usually more closer to towns, I guess, I never strayed far from my home," he paused to look up at Tori, and was given a nod to continue. "First of all, you need to make it worth it. Candy works with lots of Pokemon, especially babies like in these routes - but the higher levelled the Pokemon in the routes, the more you give. Where I lived, trainers who levelled properly usually promised us healthcare and assistance; if one of us was sick, which happens a lot, they'd come back with the medicine you use--"
"Potions. Antidotes. Paralyse Heals. Things like that; some trainers can afford more," it was Coda that spoke up, with his knowledge of humankind.
"Yep, those," Rey nodded, "and they'd use them on the sick Pokemon. It saved us. Sometimes, they'd help us evolve, too - finding a Fire Stone for a wild Growlithe or Vulpix assures them survival, because in the lower routes, there's no competition for it. Arcanine and Ninetales usually move on and becoming roaming Pokemon," he twitched one ear and glanced at Scout. "You give wild Pokemon rewards, promise not to kill us, and we'll help you. Of course, you have to get us to promise that we won't kill your Pokemon, too."
"Don't fight the Pokemon in towns and cities, though," Coda spoke again, though only his nose remained out of Tori's bag. "We prefer to be left alone. We won't help with levelling, and if you push the issue..."
Tori gently pressed their hand to the Eevee's muzzle, and he quietened quickly. They weren't surprised that Rey was talking about this; he'd been preaching about it since he'd been caught. He wasn't a young Growlithe - he was six years old, so he was in his prime. He knew how to deal with levelling and he had seen brute force used. It was no doubt that he wanted to ensure that there would be a trainer to help with the wild casualties.
"You can't take a wild Pokemon to the Pokemon Center, though," they told Will softly, "it's stupidly expensive."
