[Prologue]
"I can't do this anymore Whitestrike! You're out of control and I can't have anymore of my kits killed." A beautiful white she-cat with light ginger stripes cried out. In front of her was a large, white, tom with bloodied claws. A small ginger kit laid lifelessly by him. Her eyes glazed and blood dripping from her throat. "I only have a son now and I can't let you hurt him. Either you have to leave or I will." A small white kit was curled up by his mother, his mewling starting to grow louder and louder. "Ghostkit needs a stable home with a father who could protect him, not harm him."
"Brightspirit, please. I didn't mean to hurt any of them. I can be a good father and a good mate. Just please don't leave me." The tom sounded like he was on the verge of sobbing. "Where would you go? You can't raise a kit out in the woods alone and twoleg's will take him away."
"Then you need to leave Whitestrike. You shouldn't be here if you're a danger to others!" Brightspirit yowled.
"You can't do this. This is my home. I was born and raised here!" Whitestrike yowled back.
"I've already talked to Lightstar and she agreed with me. You're too dangerous for clan life." She said softly. "I'm so sorry this has to happen."
"Yeah. Me too Brightspirit. I thought you were the only cat that saw past my illness but I guess not." The tom turned away and left the bramble nursery and stormed out to the forest.
"I hope that was the right thing to do." Dawnspeck, another queen with a son as well, mewed.
"Me too." Brightspirit sighed and looked down at the white ball of fluff.
[Chapter One]
"Intruders!" A voice screamed from outside the nursery. Ghostkit's eyes opened wide and looked up at his frightened mother who was doing her best to stay calm. "Thunderclan, Protect the kits and elders!" Lightstar's voice rang across the camp. A large black tabby tom snuck into the nursery. His eyes wandered to the white and ginger she-cat and smirked. Brightspirit hissed at the tom and unsheathed her claws, ready to fight if needed. The tom lunged at her, clawing at her eyes and making her screech in pain. In return she bit into his back into his spine. The tom yowled and dug his claws deep into her throat. She looked down at her wound, claws still inside her neck and looked over at Ghostkit. The tiny kit stared in horror as the claws slid out and blood gushed onto the hard floor. The tom, badly injuried, began to crawl away with his front two paws. Brightspirit fell to the ground, her breathing fast and her eyes glossy. The white kit took a quick look at his mom and walked over to the tom.
"Ghostkit, get back here!" Dawnspeck hissed. Her body wrapped around Sunkit, who had been watching the whole thing. The kit ignored the older queen and stepped closer to the tabby. The tom looked up at him pitifully, unable to do anything.
"Why did you do this?" Ghostkit asked, trying not to show any grief. "She was my mother." The tom didn't say anything, just gave him a look of shame. "Answer me!" He shouted. Before the tom had a chance, he slid out his tiny, sharp, claws and started to rip the fur off his chest. "Why?" The kit started to sob when he realized he wasn't doing much damage. The front of the bramble den moved as a grey tabby stepped inside. Sunkit's father, Ripplefur, stood over Ghostkit and the Shadowclan warrior. He grabbed the other Warrior by the neck and snapped it with his teeth. He let the body drop to the floor and looked over at Ghostkit. The tom walked a bit closer to him and, with tears in his eyes, he wrapped his body around his and rested his head on the kits, holding him tight.
"You're apart of our family now Ghostkit. I promise we won't let you get hurt any longer." Ripplefur mewed softly. "I will love and raise you like you are my own son."
[Chapter Two]
"During the Shadowclan attack we have lost a great clanmate. Brightspirit was killed by the Shadowclan warrior Bugstripe. Brightspirit's kit, Ghostkit, will be raised by Ripplefur and Dawnspeck." Lightstar announced. Dawnspeck and Snowflight, Brightspirit's elderly mother, walked out of the medicine cat den carrying Brightspirit, who was covered in various flowers and herbs. The two set her down on the ground, bowed their heads, and stood back from the body. Ghostkit struggled in Ripplefur's front legs, trying to get to his mother.
"No Ghostkit. It wouldn't be a good idea to see her yet. Wait until the moon is up all the way." The grey-silver tabby told him. Ghostkit hissed at him and sunk his fangs into Ripplefur. The warrior hissed in pain and let go of the angry kit. Ghostkit rushed to the middle of camp where his mother laid. He buried his face into her cold side and screamed out of anger and greif. He pawed at her face, looking at her closed eyes. He felt his body get lifted off the ground by Lightstar. He looked up at the indifferent looking cat. No pity showed in her body language or eyes. Without a word she walked over to Ripplefur, Dawnspeck, and Sunkit and set Ghostkit down by Dawnspeck's side and gave him a hard glare.
"As I was saying, we will mourn at moonhigh and watch her spirit leave for Starclan." Lightstar yowled as she walked by to her original spot. "You're all dismissed." The clan began to fan out and go back to gossiping and whatever job they were doing. "Dawnspeck, Ripplefur. I want to talk to you two and Ghostkit." The two warriors looked over at each other with worried glaces. "Now."
"What do you want to talk about?" Dawnspeck asked. Ghostkit hid behind the newly adopted mother from the white she-cat.
"I want to start Ghostkit's training as soon as possible. Sunkit too." Lightstar said.
"Now? I thought we still had a few more days." Ripplefur mewed. "I was hoping we could bond with Ghostkit a little more before he spent all his time training."
"He can stay in the nursery with Dawnspeck while Sunkit can stay in the apprentices den. It's settled. I'll announce the ceremony after we mourn for Brightspirit." She turned around and spotted Buckheart and Nutchest and called after them. She quickly caught up with them after sprinting over.
"I guess you're going to be an apprentice today." Dawnspeck said slowly.
"You and Sunkit should get some sleep." Ripplefur finished. Ghostkit nodded and walked over to Sunkit who was a little bit aways from him and his new parents.
"What did she ask?" Sunkit squeaked.
"She said she's going to make us apprentices after moonhigh." Ghostkit mewed to his newly made pal.
"Really? That's great! Come on, let's get some sleep. We had a long day." The tiny tom mewed. Ghostkit realized that he wasn't the only one who had lost someone. Sunkit's brother had just passed away from a bad outbreak of green cough. He wondered how he could be so down to earth and joyous all the time after something like that. Ghostkit gave a small smile to him.
"Yeah. Let's go take a nap." The white tom padded into the nursery next to the black and gold tom and flopped down in his tiny nest next to Sunkit's. He closed his eyes and felt his head get heavy. Soon he was fast asleep in a dream. He was standing in the nursery, a black tom with a large grin stood in front of him and Brightspirit. His claws, sharp and large, stabbed through the she-cat's neck. Ghostkit felt the thick blood splatter on his paws and face. His eyes widened with fear and his throat grew tight. The black tom then crumbled into pebbles and dirt in a pile on the floor. Ghostkit's eyes opened quickly and looked up at a worried Sunkit who had been shaking him.
"You were kicking in your sleep and mumbling." Sunkit mewed quitely. "Are you okay?" Ghostkit took a deep breath and nodded.
"Yeah. I'm fine. Go back to sleep." The white tom told him and rolled over so he wasn't facing him.
"Alright. May Starclan bless your dreams." He heard Sunkit say and heard a large 'thud', telling Ghostkit that he went back to sleep. When he closed his eyes again he remembered Sunkit's words and suddenly he felt a lot better about going back to sleep.
[Chapter Three]
"The time of morning is over." Lightstar's voice woke Ghostkit and he shot up to his paws. "It's time to lay her to rest." The white tom bolted out of the den and stopped abruptly next to Brightspirit's body.
"Wait!" Ghostkit yowled. "Don't I get to say a few words to my mother before we bury her?" He asked Lightstar, looking up at her pleading.
"Of course." The leader mewed. "Go ahead Ghostkit." The kit bowed his head and turned his attention to his dead mother. He touched his nose to her cold pelt and whispered.
"I promise I won't let you down Brightspirit. I'll become a son you'd be proud of." Afterwards he looked back to his leader and nodded. "I'm ready now. Thank you."
"Dawnspeck, Snowflight, please go bury Brightspirit." Lightstar ordered. "Sunkit!" She yowled as the two she-cats left to bury the queen. "Come here!" A small black and gold kit scrambled out of the den.
"Is it time for the apprentice ceremony?" He mewed excitedly when he ran over to where Ghostkit was. Lightstar nodded at the two and looked over all the clan.
"Cats of Thunderclan, it has been hard times for us. It is time to make the clan stronger once again. Sunkit, Ghostkit, come here." Ghostkit felt his pelt shiver as he walked up to the tall, intimating she-cat. Her blue glare felt like thorns to him. "Ghostkit, do you promise to uphold the Warrior code and become the best warrior you can be for the sake of your clan?" Ghostkit looked over at the clan and spotted a pleased looking Ripplefur who was looking straight at him. A sense of pride seemed to flood from him. Ghostkit looked back at Lightstar.
"I do." His voice rang across the camp.
"Buckheart." Lightstar looked over at a very large brown tom with an unpleasant look on his face. "Do you agree to mentor Ghostpaw until he becomes a warrior?" The clan gave unsure glances and worried whispers. The tom started back at Ghostpaw and grunted.
"I do." Buckheart mewed. Lightstar looked over at Sunkit.
"And do you promise to uphold the Warrior code and to do your best?" Sunkit's purred and his blue eyes shone.
"I do!" He answered.
"Nutchest." A brown and cream she-cat who sat next to Buckheart nodded with a large, sweet, smile on her face. "Do you agree to mentor Sunpaw until he is a warrior?"
"I do!" She purred.
"Then it is settled. This meeting is at an end!" Lightstar said before retreating to her den. Ghostpaw watched as Sunpaw greeted Nutchest with a playful blow to the ear. Buckheart's shadow towered over Ghostpaw's frame. The white apprentice's ears swiveled backward and the fur on his neck prickled.
"I'm not going easy on you kit. Parents or no parents. Don't think you're so special." He whispered in a husky voice. "I'm here to train you, not be your friend. Got it?" The huge tom asked.
"Got it" Ghostpaw said with anger in his voice.
"Follow me kit. I'm going to show you the area near the Shadowclan border." Buckheart ordered and left for the exit. Ghostpaw followed behind slowly, glancing over at Sunpaw who was getting a tour of the camp. The white tom sighed and followed his mentor, irritated.
[Chapter Four]
"Why do we have to patrol near the Shadowclan border?" Ghostpaw asked. "What if we're jumped?" The white apprentice's fur prickled, his mind still fresh with his mother's death.
"Lightstar needs cats to look out for Shadowclan scum crossing the border and that won't happen. The fleabags aren't brave to pick a fight after an attack like that. Now tell me what you can scent. Make yourself useful." Buckheart grumbled. Ghostpaw took a deep breath, scenting the air around him. A strange scent of another cat hit his nose for a brief second and then disappeared. Ghostpaw was taken back by the feeling of a paw pressing into his back. When he turned around, nothing was there.
"Well?" Buckheart asked ,inpatient.
"Well." Ghostpaw took in another breath. "I can smell pine trees and Shadowclan scent but that's it." His mentor nodded in slight approval.
"That's because the air is blowing from Shadowclan, bringing the scent our way. I doubt there's any Shadowclan warriors on our territory." Ghostpaw nodded. His attention shifted to a small bush that's leafs were slightly shaking. In curiosity, he lowered his body to the ground that Buckheart had showed him and stalked over to the bush. Bright blue eyes glared back at him and Sunpaw pounced on to him. The weight of his body pushed Ghostpaw to the dirt and the two wrestled until Ghostpaw stood on top of the joyful tom.
"Did I scare you?" Sunpaw purred.
"Just a little." Ghostpaw smiled. "What were you doing in there?" Before his question had an answer, Nutchest walked out of Sunpaw's hiding spot, bits of branch and leafs scattered on her pelt.
"I was seeing how well Sunpaw's stalking was before we move on to a new lesson." The she-cat purred proudly. "And you both did wonderfully. Buckheart didn't even notice us." She looked over at her littlermate with a teasing look in her eyes.
"In my defense I was focused on training." Buckheart rolled his eyes. "At least I knew the difference between Riverclan and Windclan cats on my first gathering Nutchest."
"Hey! That's not fair!" Nutchest protested. "It was confusing. They both smell awful."
"What's this?" A new voice Ghostpaw didn't recognize easily spoke. "Thunderclan cats arguing so near the Shadowclan border." A long furred dark brown tom mewed. "Shouldn't you be catching mice or telling others what to do?"
"If you want, Raggedstorm, I could go tell you to take care of the elders ticks like the apprentice you are." Nutchest said calmly.
"Volestar told me to tell Thunderclan that if they don't give us the herbs that we'll be forced to take them ourselves." The tall tom told her. "No matter who tries to get in the way." The tom looked over into Ghostpaw's amber eyes and his lit up. "You're the kit who lost his mother during the battle. So sorry about that." He smirked. The white tom was about to leap onto him, but Nutchest blocked him.
"I'll get your herbs when I can. But if you hurt anymore of our warriors, I will personally rip your pelt off of you."
"Just get me some catmint. Tonight." Raggedstorm hissed. He turned to leave but Nutchest walked quickly over to him and whispered. Ghostpaw could only make out the words 'We need to talk about the kits' before their voices got so low he couldn't hear. When she turned around and came back, she purred and looked at both Sunpaw and Ghostpaw. "Remind me to tell Lightstar that she needs to give you both your warrior name soon." She mewed.
"Speak for your own apprentice. Ghostpaw still needs a lot of training." Buckheart said, looking disappointed at Ghostpaw.
"That's because you don't teach me anything new!" Ghostpaw hissed.
"And that attitude is the reason you still sleep in the nursery." He sassed back. "You'll become a warrior when I tell you you can be. Now go back to camp and go check the elders for ticks." Ghostpaw hissed but padded back to the camp. Instead of going to the elders den like Buckheart ordered, he slipped in between the back of the nursery and apprentice den that only Sunpaw and Ghostpaw knew about. The small space was comforting until he hear a small voice.
"Ghostpaw." A she-cat's voice wailed. But when he turned around, only the wind greeted him. [Chapter Five]
"Ghostpaw" Sunpaw's voice echoed in the small space between the den and the wall. "What are you doing here? Aren't you supposed to be checking the elders for-" the tom stopped speaking when he saw the tears in Ghostpaw's eyes. The tom's amber eyes shone miserably as the sun started to go down. "Ghostpaw?" Sunpaw took a step towards him.
"Sunpaw" Ghostpaw choked back tears as he saw the black and gold tom. His legs shook as he walked slowly towards his friend and fell into him, making the two fall to the ground. Sunpaw looked at his surprised as the tom laid his head on his chest. Ghostpaw pressed his ear to him, listening to the slow 'boom boom boom' of his heart. The sound calmed him down and the tears slowly stopped. Feeling exhausted, he closed his eyes and fell asleep. Sunpaw looked a bit concerned and confused for a few heartbeats but then the worried look on his face grew into a soft smile. He shimmied out of Ghostpaw's grip and struggled to carry him by the scruff into the nursery where his mother was curled up, asleep. He looked around for an empty nest and carried him over to the far back nest and set him down gently. After taking a break from carrying the heavy tom to catch his breath, he curled up next to him. He didn't mind sleeping in the nursery a few more moons with Ghostpaw until he was allowed into the apprentice den. He started to groom the dirt out of his friend's white pelt until the tom started to talk in his sleep. It wasn't anything Sunpaw could make out. Only a few mumbles. He laid down and curled his tail over his nose and went to sleep. The warmth of Ghostpaw helped him to pass out quickly.
"Sunpaw." The sound of his mother's voice woke up the black tom. Tired, Sunpaw looked up, sleep in his eyes. His mother and father stood over him with excitement written on their faces. "I want you to meet someone. Get up." Sunpaw groaned but lazily got up.
"What?" Sunpaw yawned and looked outside the den while his mother and father stood behind him. "It's not even dawn yet." He complained.
"Oh come on. If you want to be a warrior, you'll be getting up earlier from time to time." Dawnspeck mewed quitely, trying not to wake up Ghostpaw.
"Wait, am I going to become a warrior today?" Sunpaw asked, perking up a bit.
"Well, no." Ripplefur said nervously. "But something else just as exciting is going to happen." A long legged grey she-cat with small, dark grey, spots padded into the den. "This is Ashpaw, you might recognize her from training. I talked to Smallweb and we both agreed that you two should be mates."
"What?" Sunpaw hissed. "You can't just decide that! I've only talked to her once! I barely know her." Sunpaw's shouting had woken Ghostpaw and the drowsy tom looked over to see and listen to what was going on.
"Sunpaw, your mother and I feel you're spending too much time with Ghostpaw. We feel you two have an.... Unusual and unhealthy relationship. We think if you had a mate and kits, your unhealthy relationship will become a more stable and normal friendship." Ripplefur said.
"It's because I don't have any interest in she-cats, isn't it?" Sunpaw mewed irritated. "Cats can become good warriors without a mate and kits. Look at Nutchest. She never took on a mate OR had kits." Ripplefur and Dawnspeck looked at each other concerned.
"This is going to happen Sunpaw. Lightstar agrees with us and until you have a she-cat as your mate, you won't become a warrior." Dawnspeck spoke. "That's the end of this discussion. Be sure you're groomed for the celebration at moonhigh. And you need to start sleeping in the apprentice den. You're an apprentice, not a kit." The three cats, Ripplefur, Dawnspeck, and a hurt looking Ashpaw, all left the den, leaving Sunpaw to stew in his anger. Ghostpaw tried to look as if he he was still asleep, hoping it was all a dream. Sunpaw climbed back into the moss den and curled up next to him, hoping for the same. The two miserable toms laid in the den, both choking back tears as they fell asleep. [Chapter six]
"Tonight, we celebrate the joining of Ashpaw and Sunpaw. Starclan bless these mates with a life of happiness and love." Lightstar mewed on top of the Great Rock. Ghostpaw tried to keep a smile on his face and he stood next to Sunpaw but a strange feeling bubbles in his chest and stomach. Sunpaw stood up and touched noses with his new mate. "Now it's time to head to the Starpool for the gathering of clans." The leader yowled. The exited chatter of the clan surrounded Ghostpaw. He sighed and followed Sunpaw, Ashpaw, and his adopted parents to the group of cats on their way to the gathering. His ears perked up when Sunpaw glanced over his shoulder at the white apprentice before his mother gave him a scolding look and he turned away.
"Are you excited for your third gathering Ghostpaw?" A small voice asked from behind him. The tom looked over at a tiny , young, grey tabby, she-cat. Ghostpaw recognized her as Ashpaw's little sister Mistypaw. He hadn't really talked to her before then so it took him off guard.
"I guess so." He answered bluntly. "Although I bet you're excited for your first." The tiny she-cat's eyes shone.
"Oh yeah! Ashpaw told me all about them when I was a kit!" She purred. "It sounds fun."
"When you were a kit?" Ghostpaw scoffed. "More like three moons ago."
"Well you aren't that much older than me!" She huffed. "You've only been an apprentice for five moons!"
"Your right." Ghostpaw said politely. "Why aren't you with your sister Seapaw?"
Mistypaw snorted. "She's busy mooning over Ratpelt."
"Ratpelt? But he's so arrogant." Ghostpaw said, his face twisted in disgust. Mistypaw shrugged.
"The most arrogant and egotistical toms get the most she-cats." She told him. "Anyways I better go bug Seapaw!" She laughed before racing off to ruin her sister's chat. By the time their conversation ended, the clan was almost at Starpool. Ghostpaw caught a whiff of Shadowclan and Riverclan. He felt chills on his spine as he walked to take his regular spot around the pool. He always felt the burning stares of Shadowclan cats when he came the the gatherings. This time it was most likely because he had recently gotten in a fight with a scruffy dark ginger apprentice. Lightstar took her place on the fallen tree that laid above the water. Volestar, a slick black tom from Shadowclan, stepped forward.
"I will start this meeting by saying Shadowclan has had good hunting this moon." The leader locked eyes with Lightstar. "And we still haven't received any catmint like Thunderclan said they would send us."
"If you haven't used it all up during Leafbare you'd still have some. You shouldn't expect Thunderclan to make up for what you wasted." Lightstar responded calmly, as if talking to a kit.
"If I may interupted." A brown, short furred tom with large ears and a long tail stood up. He stared at Ghostpaw with bright hazel eyes. "I saw a large, white furred tom with amber eyes coming from Thunderclan that was taking catmint and other herbs from the Shadowclan border. And, looking like you only have one white tom in the clan..." The tom mewed. Eyes turned to Ghostpaw. The tom wiggled from being uncomfortable as all of the clan's attention landed on him.
"How can you prove that it was Ghostpaw that stole the herbs?" Lightstar asked the young warrior.
"We found this fur around the herb patches." The tom held up a clump of white, thick, fur that looked like at match to Ghostpaw."
"Now hold on." Ghostpaw said defensively. He made his way through the crowd and walked up the the brown tom. "You can't just accuse me of that! What if it was a loner?"
The Shadowclan warrior shook his head at him. "It smells like Thunderclan to me. Check for yourself." Ghostpaw squinted his eyes at him but stepped closer to him and scented the fur. The unmistakable scent of Thunderclan hit his nose. His eyes widened and his claws slid out.
"You somehow took some of my fur and planted it right by the herbs so it looks like I'm to blame!" He hissed. "I'm tired of Shadowclan always causing trouble." The Shadowclan tom got into a battle stance and unsheathed his claws as well.
"Ghostpaw, stop." Lightstar demanded.
With adrenaline pumping through his vains, Ghostpaw brought his claws down on the tom's neck, causing skin and fur to tear. Clouds covered to moon and small droplets of rain dropped down onto Ghostpaw's face.
"This apprentice's actions are unexcusable." Volestar told Lightstar. "He needs to be punished."
"I agree." Lightstar mewed. "I'll give him a fitting punishment when we go back to the camp." Volestar shook his head.
"He needs a proper punishment. He will be coming with us to Shadowclan until he's learned to have some control." The Shadowclan leader told her.
"You can't take my cats Volestar." Lightstar hissed.
"Tell me Lightstar, to you believe in the needs of the many outweighs the needs of the few?" The tom asked.
"Are you threatening me Volestar?" Lightstar asked.
"If Ghostpaw doesn't come with us, I can promise you you'll lose not only an apprentice, but many warriors and maybe a life of yours as well. Which is it going to be?"
Lightstar looked at the white apprentice for a few heartbeats before answering. "Ghostpaw, you'll be spending some time in Shadowclan for a while." Ghostpaw's eyes grew huge with disbelief.
"You can't do that Lightstar! Ghostpaw is apart of Thunderclan." Sunpaw spoke up. "I have made my decision. Thunderclan, we have stayed too long. Let's go home." The clan, unsure, followed her to the clan. Ghostpaw looked over at Sunpaw. The black and gold tom gave him a sad look before disappearing with the clan. Riverclan and Windclan left next, they too seemed shaken.
"Let's get going fleabrain." The brown tom mewed with disgust in his voice. Ghostpaw spat at him but was forced to follow due to the overwhelming number of Shadowclan cats.

I thought it's a good start. It starts the story off knowing more information than TNNOK didn't have until half way through and does add good foreshadowing of what happens in the future. Bonus that we get to see Ghost's father. I'm slightly wondering why both cats are not a little more grieved over the loss of one of their kits.
