“Do you think… nobody else is actually a couple?” Zuko asked, eying the others around the dessert table. He crossed his arms, frowning a little as he tried to figure out if they were friends or something else. He shrugged, turning back to Sal. “Do you think the rest of them even know what the room is for? I mean if it’s only a thing in your world…” He shrugged, glancing back down at the menu. He shifted, pulling on his shirt so it sat in a way that wouldn’t wrinkle the silk too much. “Ash banana bread,” he replied, pointing at the menu before moving away just enough so Sal could read it “And lychee cake. Oh! Fire cakes - those are some of my favorites. They have lots of stuff from my world, actually… cookies, fruit tarts… hotcakes… ice cream… mochi, that’s good too… rice candy… what’s here that’s from your world?”

| Eurydice | Valentine's Day Room (Congrats to Sal and Zuko!) | Orpheus | Eurydice set the heart-shaped chocolate box back down on the table, then looked out at the collection of sweets. She saw some foods similar to the foods in her own world, but she figured those could wait. She reached out to a tray of strawberries covered in the same substance- chocolate- and picked one up. They were so pretty- smooth with crisscrossing lines of white chocolate like lace over them. It seemed almost a shame to ruin them by eating them. She took a bite anyways. The fruit was fresh and sweet with just a hint of sour, and cut through the richness of all that chocolate. "These are good." She commented. "Less rich."

Sal Fisher | Valentine’s Room | striderSal glanced at the others, blinking a little as that sunk in. The idea that no one else was actually dating either hadn’t really occurred to him, but…he guessed it made sense. Did rooms usually have the same goal for everyone in them? Or were their different things for different people to accomplish in them, like some sort of giant multiplayer game with different storylines? He’d have to ask around, if he ever blinked into a busier room again. Or even here, though…he had a feeling this wouldn’t be the best room for it. “Ash banana bread sounds…” Sal narrowed his eyes a little, leaning forward to see if there was a picture. “Ashy. But most of that exists in my world, too. Just maybe not that specific kind. We have banana bread and cakes and all that, but I think maybe your flavors are different. Do you think the House would make a whole room that only one person would have the context for? Because that seems…unfair somehow.”

Touka | valentines day room | the candy gets noticeably worse |
Touka frowned at it, leaning forward as much as she could without getting too much of the acrid scent. Apparently Rex didn't like this one either, though. At least not by smell.
"I think it's called licorice," she said, remembering that Yoriko used to chew on them sometimes. "Dunno what it's supposed to taste like, though." She grinned. "Wanna find out?"
Matt | valentines day room | here we gooooo |
Matt sobered slightly, realizing just how little Joey was aware of people like him.
"You can like both," he said quickly, enthusiastically. "It's called bisexual, or pansexual. Totally a thing - I have a lot of friends who are." He listened to the rest of Joey's story, sympathetic. "Oh yeah I get that. I was in love with my best friend for YEARS, and he's like, one hundred percent straight. Dated girls all the time and it drove me crazy."

Orpheus looked over at the chocolate strawberry Eurydice had picked up, brow raising as he watched her eat it. He recognized strawberries, of course, but he wouldn’t have thought to combine it with chocolate. It looked tasty, without the cloying sweetness of some of the purely chocolate treats. He raised one to his lips, letting his eyes close just long enough to taste it. He let out a soft breath as he swallowed, a smile coming over his lips. “It’s good,” he murmured in agreement. “I think I could eat a lot more of these than I could of the other ones.” He finished it, then moved over towards the baklava he had noticed. “I like baklava,” he murmured, taking a small corner piece and lifting it to his lips. It tasted like home. “Oh… it’s not like… banana bread made with ashes,” Zuko replied with a small shrug. “It’s made from fruit from the ash banana tree. It’s really good, actually. Sweet, but at least a little bit spicy. Most foods are spiced in the Fire Nation, even desserts. Everywhere else has food that’s… bland.” He glanced at the menu again, wishing it told them where the different foods were from. There were things he had never heard of, but he was fairly certain there were some things from his world that nobody else knew about. Maybe the foods were from the worlds of everyone who was here… “Isn’t that what the room with the video games was?” Zuko asked, tilting his head. “I mean… I had never heard of video games before you, and I had never had a pillow fight, so I didn’t really know anything about that room.” Zuko shifted, a blush coloring his cheeks as he looked up at Sal, meeting his eye. “Would… you like to go over and try some of the desserts?”

| Eurydice | Valentine's Day Room | Orpheus | "Yeah? Me too. I think that one's from my- our world." She amended. She thought it was interesting that when Orpheus choose a sweet, he chose one from home. She picked up a piece and ate it, the crisp layers mixing with the honeyed sweetness. "Yep. You could tell me the House picked this up from a bakery in Thrace this morning and I'd believe you."

Sal Fisher | Valentine’s Room | strider“Oh, huh. I don’t think that’s a thing in my world,” Sal replied thoughtfully. “I mean, we have banana trees, but I don’t think there’s different kinds. Don’t quote me on that, though.” He looked through some of the other foods. A lot of it had concepts he thought he recognized, and a lot of it was actually things he could picture, but there were a few things he didn’t recognize. Probably from Zuko’s world or someone else’s…he guessed most of the fire related things were probably Zuko’s. “We’ll…yeah, sort of, but we were the only ones there, so half of the people in it still knew what was going on,” he replied, leaning back a little to see Zuko better. “It feels different when it’s a busy room. Like at least a few people should know what’s going on, in case someone blinks out.” He shrugged a little, focusing on the table instead, trying to make out the food closest to him, though nothing stuck out too much. “Oh…yeah. Yeah, that’d be fun,” he added, brightening a little. “I wonder if the sweets from my world’ll taste bland to you, too.”

Hook - Valentines Day Room - @/shade
Hook blinked in sitting at one of the tables, staring blankly at the ceiling while whistling quietly to himself. The melody trailed to a half hearted end as he noticed his blink.
Sitting upright, he stared at the table he was at, taking note of the empty plates, fancy flowers, and bottle of some expensive looking liquor. Without much pause, he took the bottle and uncorked it with his teeth - ignoring the slight overflow as he glanced around at the others and the weird decorations. He didn’t let his gaze linger on anyone long, but he was quick to notice the fact everyone was in pairs - and that there was an empty chair across from him.
With a small hum, he poured a bit of the champagne into one of the glasses on the table (probably more than what an average person would want), then sat back squinting at the chair as he drank straight from the bottle.

Shade || Valentines day room || @/des
When she blinked in, Shade was already conveniently sitting in a chair, leaned back on it's back legs and with her own propped upon the table with her ankles crossed while she glared thoughtfully at the ground. Her attention perked when she realized she had blinked and she looked up, briefly taking stock of the room, and the theme of the room, and stifling a bout of laughter. Oh, this was corny. Terribly corny. Hilariously corny.
The laughter fizzled into a grin when her gaze settled on Hook, and the cup of some drink he had poured her. Smelled fancy. "Well, how do you do, my dear pirate?" she inquired with a wink, lifting the glass to take a sip. It was even better than she'd expected it to be, but then she also had little experience with liquors in the first place so what could she know beyond her charming, definitely-not-an-alcoholic companion.

Hook - Valentines Room - @/shade
Hook raised his eyebrows as someone appeared in front of him, a triumphant grin spreading across his face when he saw it was who he was hoping for.
“Better now,” he answered her smugly, taking a drink from the bottle through his smile. Not the taste he was used to, but the sweetness was enjoyable. He leaned over the table slightly, watching her with a thrilled grin. “The House is getting predictable, but f[oops], I won’t complain. Has your world been as much as a shit show as mine recently?”
“Also, the hell is goin’ on with this room?” He said in a more hushed voice with a stifled grin as he glanced at the others.

Shade | Valentine's Day Room | @/des
She winked at him, amused and flattered by his cheeky response. "You know, some days I wonder if complanning would only get us killed. But, as much of a hellfest as this place is it's always nice to have your good company," she chuckled, "oh always, the shit show never ends. Hope you're dealing well, though, just make sure not to die." In truth, given both their personal histories, she could only ever mean that as a half joke. Shade silently cursed the house for not letting them go between worlds, as much as it made sense. But she couldn't help but wish she could share in adventures with Hook now and then, outside of the house-manufactured bullshittery they had to endure.
When his voice lowered she leaned herself a bit closer, glancing around the room again and looking back at him with her eyebrows raised in surprise. "What, you dont have Valentines day in your world?" She waited a beat, another grin spreading across her face. "Its like... the lovey-doveyist holiday out of all of them. It's all about love and couples and mass produced cheap gifts and chocolate that tastes like mud with sugar in it. Some people take it pretty seriously as a sort of... reminder to show people how much you love them, or something like that." She leaned back in her seat again, waving her hands in a loop to illustrate the all-encompassing point before they settled behind her head and she looked to the others in the roo and watched them. "Looks like everyone's found their Valentine." She smirked.

Hook - Valentines Room - @/shade
“Of course it is,” the captain replied confidently, then gave a more sincere nod to her next comment, although he was still smirking. “Aye, you as well. I’m scarcely better off here though, shit,” he muttered with a dry chuckle - sounding a bit too cocky that so many people wanted him dead everywhere he went.
“Obviously not,” he answered in drawn out voice, side eyeing the cheesy decor before looking back at her with a grin. He hovered over the table as she explained the room, giddy like a teenager to hear her talk about her goofy world traditions. He always liked when Shade explained the concepts behind rooms to him; he knew she made them sound more arduous than they actually were, which he found deeply amusing. “No shit,” he hummed in amusement, glancing around. “How generous for the House to blink us in together then - pity that the chocolate and booze in the House is too f[oops]’ sweet,” he said, taking another swing.
The pirate glanced around the room with her, his expression slack as he noticed Touka and Rex together. The realization took him a few seconds - looking back and forth between the pair of them and Shade - before he gestured to them loosely with the top of the bottle. “Wait,” he said slowly, a smile starting to cross over his face How long have those two been f[oops]’? He mouthed to Shade, before immediately starting to laugh cruelly. “No f[oops]’ way,”

Matt | Valentines room | vibetown |
Matt blinked, fully taken aback as the hope in Joey's tone stabbed him somewhere deep inside.
"Yeah man, it's fine, he said, his voice serious now instead of joking. "I mean, look at me. If anyone was gonna pick on us for being queer it would have happened to me by now, right?" He lowered his voice and leaned in, trying to make Joey laugh. "I mean, I dunno if you can tell since I keep it under wraps, but I"m gay myself."

Rex | v day | uh oh x298475489758944 Rex's nose wrinkled. "No, not really," he said flatly. Then with a long suffering sigh, he took a bite off the end. The reaction was immediate. His brows furrowed and his mouth twisted in disgust. Rex didn't even know how to process what he was tasting. Was it bitter? No. Was it sour? No. Did he feel like he had just licked an exhaust pipe? Absolutely. "Shit," he gagged, looking for a trash can to spit it out into. Finding none, he realized with dawning horror that he was going to have to swallow it. Groaning in dismay, he covered his mouth with his hand and choked the piece of licorice down. "Ugh," he spat, glaring at Touka. "You knew that one was going to be bad."

Touka | Valentines day room | scandal and chaos |
Touka burst out laughing at his expression, and watched with enormous amusement as he frantically cast about for somewhere to spit out the candy. She grinned at him, the warmth she'd felt earlier spreading through her entire body, creating a lightheaded happiness she seldom managed to feel.
"I don't know what any of it tastes like," she said innocently, giving him an evil grin. "How was I supposed to know that one would be bad?"
And then, she caught her name from somewhere behind her, and realized, with dawning horror, that the voice who had said it was a familiar one.
"What?" she said, a little too loudly as her ears turned approximately six shades redder than they usually were. She coughed, narrowing her eyes at the pair of them, and started over, pretending like she didn't care that they were sitting only a few tables over all of a sudden.
"Oh great. It's you," she said to Hook, her tone flat. She turned back to Rex, glancing up at the wire ceiling. "Maybe tht's what that is for. To stop me from throwing him off the balcony."

“I think so, too,” Orpheus replied, taking another small bite of the baklava. It was sweet, like all of the other desserts, but it wasn’t overly so. He couldn’t help but wonder if the rest of the world had gotten a little bit over-excited when it came to how much sugar was in things. “It’s good, though,” he added, letting out a soft sigh. “It would have been easy for the House to recreate some that weren’t very good, but it seemed to have chosen a good recipe.” At the sound of a new voice, Orpheus turned, eyes narrowed as he realized who it was who had joined them. He didn’t like Hook very much, and he didn’t want him ruining this room too. “Oh,” Zuko replied, tilting his head a little bit. “I mean… we don’t have bananas other than ash bananas, at least that I know of? I don’t know, I’ve only ever had ash bananas.” He didn’t know what that meant, though he thought it had something to do with the fact that he knew other worlds had turtles and ducks, but didn’t have turtle ducks, just like his world didn’t have just turtles or just ducks. He pushed the thought away, instead focusing on Sal and the dessert table they were both heading towards. “I think there’s probably a little bit of something from every world,” he replied after a moment, glancing at the table and trying to see if he could recognize any of the sweets on sight. “I’d like to try some of the sweets from your world,” he said after a moment, then sheepishly tried to take Sal’s hand. He didn’t know if that was something they could try, but… if they were together together, it was something they should be comfortable with, right? If they were giving this a try? He glanced at Sal, hoping he would be able to tell if the other boy was comfortable with it.

Sal Fisher | Valentine’s Room | strider“Wait…really?” Sal paused, frowning a little as he processed that. “So…that’s just what they’re called. I wonder if they taste the same as earth bananas, or they’re just a totally different thing.” Was there anything on the table they should head for first? He craned his neck as they approached it, trying to see if there was anything he especially liked. And then he wasn’t thinking about the desserts anymore. He glanced at Zuko, eyes widening a little, but he didn’t pull back. Instead, he gave his hand a firm squeeze, trying to communicate without words that he was okay with it, even if his face did feel a little warm again. “Well, I don’t have much of a sweet tooth, so fair warning. I might not be your best person to give recommendations,” he continued, keeping his voice normal. Because dating was normal. And so was holding your boyfriend’s hand. And probably so was blushing about both things. He’d read enough books to know he was probably being stupid about it, but maybe he didn’t mind that. “That being said, though, you should definitely try the…wow, another couple? Wait - is that a pirate?” Whoever it was, the cool girl did not seem happy to see him.

| Eurydice | Valentine's Day Room | Orpheus | "Remember in that other room, how it made us actually make the blanket? Maybe it can't make anything and this really is fresh from a bakery in Thrace. After all, it can blink people in. Why not pastry?" Eurydice said. She picked up another piece and ate it, trying to imagine where it was from, if she could taste a hint of human error- undermixed pastry, or overbaked, that might indicate it wasn't House made. She couldn't tell, though. It seemed like just a regular old piece of baklava. Eurydice's gaze followed Orpheus' over to the two new people in the room. Not newbies, apparently, as the man near the snack table called out to one of them in greeting.

Joey | Valentines room | vibetown! |
Joey waited for what was like an eternity for an answer. His previous reply mist have done a number on Matt. "World's not the nicest, neither is highschool. Middle school was so brutal, I don't know how any of us made are supposed to make it through senior year. I dunno how things work here or your world- I really don't." He admits, watching at the corner of his eye everyone else flock to the buffet. Either they would be minding their own business or they would start listening in. Well, better make it a good show worth hearing. "I was worried someone here found out - someone killed me inside. Made a big show out of it for some sick kicks. Inside of wherever this place is and I can't forget it. I can't..." Joey frowned, at a loss how he was supposed to gloss over that.
"There's like zilch out there for me to know, and everytime I see news, it goes down badly. Been relying on my gut to get through everything when comes to not being found out. Ever since my dad d-" He hesitates for the first time in the conversation. It takes a moment to redirect as Matt leans. A reluctant smile creeps onto his face, under his mask. "Holy sh#t. I would have never guessed!"
A total whiplash. His neck had been snapped once, it felt like it was happening all over again. "I just-you're a real clown, you know that? Rainbow wig and all." He gave in, chuckling and giving a playful punch to Matt's shoulder.

Matt | Valentines day room | vibetown success |
Matt almost gave into the urge to take Joey's hand, knowing he had no idea just how sympathetic he was. Childhood hadn't been very kind to him either, although he knew he was lucky to have grown up in a place as accepting as Wammy's. But he held his hand back, trying to be considerate of Joey's boundaries. He was skittish about this whole thing - probably wouldn't want to hold hands with a dude in front of the entire House.
"I know right," he said, smiling back as Joey nudged him. "I went to clown college and everything, got my four year degree hanging in my room at home."
He paused, wanting to at least acknowledge Joey's vulnerability. "And uh, yeah, I get that," he said, his voice a little softer. "My world isn't very nice to people like me, either. At some point I just stopped caring if people hated me, or what they thought about me. It got too tiring. And letting people know it's ok to be like me is worth getting beat up every once in a while, I guess."

Shade smirked at his dry remark and shrugged. "You do have that lovely charm about you, just making friends everywhere you go," she said with a quiet laugh. It really did seem to be a talent he had, she had to wonder how on earth she was lucky enough to be one of the few to get his enjoyable company.
It was amusing watching his face as he processed her whole Valentines spiel, and she nodded slowly. "Generous indeed. It'd be terribly unfortunate to be a..." she glanced around the room, trying to count everyone... and gave up. "...An extra wheel. Although-" she turned to look at him again, "I'm sure you'd manage just fine however." Her grin stuck around, then widened when she followed his gaze to look at Rex and Touka, both of whom it darned on her she actually recognized. Her eyebrows went up again and she chuckled. "Oh, dear, I don't know shit."
The grin on her face turned friendlier and she gave a small wave to Rex, and Touka, "Hello there! Fancy seeing you two here. How have you been, Rex?" she inquired, dragging her seat into a new position so she could see more of the room and half lean on the table.

Hook - Valentines Room - @/shade, ice, rain
The pirate grinned at his partners quips, nodding along to their words with a not-so-humble shrug. “I’d find a way to have a good time sure, but I am much happier you’re here too.”
He raised his eyebrows in surprise when Touka shouted at him, quickly reminded that she didn’t have human senses. He widened his eyes at Shade in a sarcastic, oh shit sort of way and then chuckled. With another drink of the fancy liquor he sat back in his chair, looking at the other ‘couple’ with a smirk. “I’m just sittin’ here, love,” he said innocently to Touka’s friendly welcome. He tilted his head at them, grinning at the ghoul’s blush, “-just tryin’ to enjoy the…holiday.” He glanced at Shade, making sure he understood the premise of the room correctly enough for his jab to be effective.

“We could try an ash banana tart and see if it tastes the same?” Zuko asked, still moving towards the dessert table. There was tension growing between some of the people there, but he didn’t think it would be that big a deal… hopefully they wouldn’t be too bothered by two people coming forward just to grab some sweets. He didn’t like Hook very much, but it had been years since he had seen him, so it was entirely possible the pirate wouldn’t even recognize him. “I want to try whatever you want me to try. Whatever you like,” he added, searching the table and blatantly ignoring the tension growing at one end. If they were in front of some of the things Zuko wanted to try that would be a problem, but there were still things they could eat without getting in the middle of it. “Oh,” Zuko replied, looking up to see Sal’s amazement. “Yeah. That’s Hook, he’s kind of… an ass? I guess. I’ve never met anyone who actually likes him.” He may have been the one to have taken Sal’s hand, but he was blatantly trying to ignore everything it was making him feel. It shouldn’t have been a big deal, right? It was just holding hands. “Oh,” Orpheus replied, eyes widening as he considered it. He had never thought that the House might not be able to make things. He couldn’t help but wonder if the blanket they had made together had ever appeared in another room, where other blinkers could use it without knowing which hands had worked to make it. Would they just assumed the House had done it? “I think it would be sad to not be able to make anything.” He was trying to ignore Hook. If he didn’t acknowledge the pirate, maybe he would leave him and Eurydice alone. He seemed mostly preoccupied with the other blinkers anyway. Hopefully it would stay that way. After a moment Orpheus edged away anyway, moving towards a giant structure that seemed to be made entirely of edible things. “This one seems… interesting.” It looked a little bit like a house, but with chalk-like hearts stuck to the ‘doorway’ and making up the roofline as well.

Sal Fisher | Valentine’s Room | strider“Huh. Well, that’s creative,” Sal replied instinctively, shooting the others a curious look before he pulled his attention back to the table. “Well, if he’s here, I guess someone likes him. Anyway…I was going to say ice cream. Best sweet there is, and there are tons of flavors, too. Like, hundreds, if you go to the right place. But I’m going to call it now and say you’d like…moose tracks.” He was trying not to think too much about their hands. Would Zuko want to pull away at the table? Was his grip too loose? Too tight? Why wasn’t there a manual for this? But he didn’t want to let go. His heart just felt a little unsteady, that was all. “Do you see any ash banana tarts?” He added, tilting his head to look at Zuko again. “Or…anything you think I should try, actually. I want to know what the foods you’re used to taste like.”

| Eurydice | Valentine's Day Room | Orpheus | How much of what they saw was created by unseen hands? Who had whisked the eggs for the cakes they were free to leisurely taste? Who had placed the tablecloths over the tables? Perhaps the House did it all, Eurydice thought. But another part of her worried that it didn't. "I think it would be too. If you didn't have something, you'd have to do without. Or hope that somebody helped you." Eurydice watched the interaction between the pair that had been at the dessert table near them and the couple that was seated. There was history there, of what kind she wasn't sure, but it was there. She was curious about it- she thought that surely there was lots of history that existed in a place like this, even if it wasn't recorded or known outside of it, only existing in people's memories. "Self-portrait, maybe." Eurydice said, looking at the gingerbread house. "After all, it's called the House."

“Someone must, but whoever they are has really bad taste,” Zuko replied, though he couldn’t quite recall what had gone down that had formed his opinion of the pirate. There had been a lot going on in his life at the time, and all he remembered was that Hook had provoked him. It had probably had something to do with the scar. “We have ice cream,” Zuko replied, a small smile touching his lips. “I’ve never heard of moose tracks… we have moose lions, but I don’t think that’s what you’re talking about… but we have a few flavors. They aren’t found everywhere, but they’re a treat I had often when my family went to Ember Island when I was little.” He looked at Sal for a moment, then glanced at their hands before beginning to look for an ash banana tart. “Ooh!” He pulled a fire cake just a little bit closer, eyes catching on the bright red chili powder that coated it. “Try this. It’s a little bit spicy on the outside, but the inside is fruity and sweet.” “The House certainly has plenty of people to help it, if it wants it,” Orpheus replied, letting his gaze meet Eurydice’s for a long moment. “I think… it brings us into rooms, and because we’re human, we create. So long as it gives us the materials, we can’t help it. Even in rooms where there’s no threat against us if we don’t use the materials. We didn’t have to make the blanket, but we did. In a way, I guess we added to the things it could use.” Orpheus let the thought hang in the air for just a moment before he turned his attention fully towards the gingerbread house. It looked like too much of a masterpiece to eat - who would put that much effort into something they planned to destroy and eat later? “Perhaps,” Orpheus mused, a smile coming to his lips at the thought. “It has the same sort of decorations as are in this room. I’m not sure why the House chose this, but… maybe it just likes it. It is a cheerful sort of color.”

| Eurydice | Valentine's Day Room | Orpheus | "Hmm." Eurydice hummed in agreement. It made sense, that each blinker slowly added things to the House. But maybe the House could create, if it made the gingerbread house of itself. Or maybe someone else made it, like Orpheus had mentioned people doing. But it was cheerful and covered in hearts, like whoever had made it was a friend. But that didn't make sense because she'd heard Orpheus talk about how dangerous the rooms could be. Or sad. Unsure of how to voice what she was thinking, she merely plucked one of the hearts off the roof and said, "Do you think it's lonely?" She popped the candy heart into her mouth not realizing she ought to read the sentiment on it, then furrowed her brow. Weird texture. Sickly sweet, chalky taste. Ick. She quickly crunched it up and finished it so she wouldn't have to taste it any longer. "Those ones are weird."

Sal Fisher | Valentine’s Room | striderSal glanced at Zuko, but he didn’t press. He got the sense it wasn’t just vague irritation with the pirate…and even if he was curious, and maybe wanted to know how much he should avoid him in the future, he wasn’t going to stir up bad memories now. “Moose lions,” he repeated, his tone tinged with amusement. “You know, sometimes I think you probably have half as many animals in your world as I do. Moose tracks is…well, it’s basically just chocolate ice cream with chunks of fudge in it, sort of swirled around. It doesn’t really look like moose tracks, but it’s good. Might be too sweet for you, though…” He was tempted to ask about Ember Island, but he let himself be pulled a little closer to the table instead, searching for anything that could hold ice cream. He turned, eyes catching in the cake as Zuko pulled it closer. It did look sort of spicy…he took a fork and cut off a bite, holding it up to the light. “What’s it called?”
