"I guess that's better than nothing," said Hera, the shrug encased clearly in the lilt of her voice, casual and calm as usual as she took in the situation. "I mean...if there's walls, that means there's a room here, which I really couldn't - wait, how do you know that?"
The question should have occurred to her sooner, because humans were not supposed to be able to figure out the chemical makeup of the things around them in complete darkness. Not even she could do that.

The fun of the game seemed to have vanished with the appearance of the paper. Sal didn’t know what it was, and he’d barely gotten more than a brief glance at it anyway, but he could tell from the tension in Zuko’s shoulders and the way his fist pressed gently against the wall like he would much rather have smashed through it that the House had overstepped. He had no idea whether it had meant to. It probably didn’t matter. Still, Zuko didn’t seem like he wanted to talk about it. If they’d been friends, he might have asked, but they’d just met. He wouldn’t have wanted to spill his guts to a stranger, either. He considered for a moment, trying to decide whether he could ask for something to cheer Zuko up, but he didn’t know him, and he felt like the House might twist it into something else anyway. “Nah. It just said no when I thought of something it couldn’t mess up, anyway,” he replied, shaking his head a little. “Which is kind of cheating, because it means I thought of something specific enough that it couldn’t misunderstand me on purpose. But that’s fine. Have you been blinking for long?”

Kelsier stood up, testing the floor in front of him before he took a step forward. It wasn’t the most efficient way of moving around - this was going to take forever - but if tin didn’t even begin to touch the blackness, that was probably what he’d have to do. He didn’t really want to drop into a hole in the ground. He was already feeling the same prickle of discomfort he’d felt in the strange flying thing room…he didn’t know what it was, but he seemed to hate small spaces very much. The problem here was that he had no way of seeing how much space he had. “Hm? Oh, I’m Mistborn,” he replied casually, venturing further in. “You’ve probably never heard of it. Different world. But I get my abilities from metals.”

Nico wasn’t entirely certain they were completely done with birds. If there were polar bears, wasn’t it likely that there would be penguins nearby? Nico may not have ever actually been in a zoo before, but he thought organizing the animals that way made sense. He didn’t mention it to Sam, not wanting to give him false hope. “Nope,” Nico replied with a light shrug. “I have no idea what they might look like, except I’ve seen one in a book I think. But… yeah, I’ll lead.” He squeezed Sam’s hand, looking around for a moment before heading the direction he thought he remembered from the map. If he was wrong, then they’d still probably see something cool, even if it wasn’t what they had been intending to see.

Abilities...different worlds...
"Tha-atat...doesn't make sense," she said slowly, not sure what Kelsier was trying to say. If it were Eiffel, she'd know he was making a joke - he was always talking about how
"Yeaahhhh, I'm pretty sure I have superpowers."
The room changed in the blink of an eye, the darkness dissolving to make way for a small, cramped room, lined with servers and computers, dimly lit by a small light fixed into the ceiling.
The man who was speaking was tall and lanky, like someone had taken a regular human and stretched him out a little bit, then put him back down. He had unkempt brown hair and a stubbly, angled face, and was wearing a tank top underneath a half-unzipped green-gray uniform.

Zuko hadn’t meant to ruin the room. He hadn’t expected the House to give him something so personal, though. If he had been closer to Sal, he might have explained, but… he was a stranger, and Zuko wasn’t even open with Iroh most of the time. They might have been having a good time trying to get the House to give them what they wanted, but that didn’t make them friends. It made them acquaintances at best. Maybe if they ran into each other more in the future, but… for now, they were just… barely more than strangers. Strangers that got along, perhaps, but strangers that knew little to nothing about each other. He was grateful that Sal wasn’t asking. It seemed he understood that there were some things you didn’t talk about with a stranger. It was interesting, Zuko thought, how some of the people he had met who he liked the most were the people who seemed to have their own secrets to hide, so they didn’t delve into his. It was nice. “Right, yeah. Seems about right for the House to cheat, I guess. But… I’ve been blinking in for a while, I guess. About two and a half years. I blinked in a lot when I was thirteen, then I stopped for a while, and now… I blink in more now.”

L didn’t think what he did had much to do with philosophy, though he couldn’t quite say Orpheus was wrong. Perhaps it was just that philosophy was more general. He didn’t try to figure out what made humans in general likely to try and hurt each other. He just found cases and got in the head of the person behind it. Or people, but generally, there was one main person and a few secondary ones, in his experience. He was enjoying the way Orpheus watched the signs, the awe in their eyes. It was as though L was showing them another world entirely…which, maybe he was, in a sense. Another way to communicate. There were bound to be things Orpheus had never thought of, woven into the language. Maybe, he mused, the signs themselves would inspire a song. “Oh…” he hesitated, lowering his hands a little. “It was actually one of your songs. Just one I’ve heard you sing here, before. But I did change the tune a bit, to fit the signs better. I’m not really good at singing in any language, but you get the idea. You’d be better at it.”

Orpheus was oddly touched that L had decided to use one of their songs to demonstrate what a song would look like in sign language. It meant that L remembered their songs, first and foremost. Which meant that their music existed in more than one world (or at least, in more than one time. They still wanted to believe that they and L were from the same world). It also meant that it would be possible to one day perform their own songs in sign language. In the language that was more familiar to L than the language he kept teaching Orpheus words in. That struck Orpheus as surprisingly intimate. A language wasn’t a secret, but L was a secret, and here he was, sharing himself with Orpheus. Orpheus wasn’t entirely certain what they had done to deserve that honor. “Can… you show me how you did it?” Orpheus asked, voice quiet enough it seemed almost breakable. “I mean… I’d love to learn. To see what my music feels like in a language that isn’t spoken. And… for the record, the rhythm of it was mesmerizing. I’m sure you’re much better than you believe. You’re quite good at singing, at least from what I heard in that one room.”

Kelsier stayed where he was as the darkness faded, though one hand did move to the hilt of his dagger. Yet another thing it was not safe to sleep with, ans even less safe to sleep without. Unfortunately, it did mean he only had the one, but he’d done a lot more with a lot less plenty of times. The room itself was…strange. Small, smaller, than he liked, and lined with things he couldn’t quite put a name to. He wanted to open the door, but he resisted for the moment. There was someone new there, too. Kelsier eyed him for a moment, trying to decide whether he was a blinker or not. He had no way of knowing for sure, but…something about the situation made him think this was a House person. Not one he recognized. Did Hera? “Hello, there,” he said after a moment, raising a hand in greeting. He wasn’t sure the man could see him, but it was worth a try.

"Oh? And what makes you say that?"
Another voice answered - a familiar, disembodied voice, light with amusement.
"Oh, y'know. There was this one time in Texas - " the man began, but Hera was only half listening...she remembered this. Remembered this day, this story...
"He can't hear you," said Hera softly, not wanting to look away. God, it felt like it had only been a few days since this Eiffel was here. Laughing, joking, telling stories...being alive. "This...already happened. It's a memory."

Kelsier fell silent, watching the man’s face as he spoke. He looked, the Mistborn mused, not so far from how he himself often did. He didn’t know him, of course. He had never seen him before and he never would again. But it was the sort of smile that was not forced, but had been once. The sort of smile you learned to forge after the original was stolen. Hera’s voice told him more than her words did. This was a memory, no, he was a memory. “I’m sorry,” he said honestly, because the House would never apologize. Because someone should. “Not all the rooms are kind.”

Hera | Memory room | ®Hawkpath® |Before Hera had time to answer, the room shifted again...and then again. Eiffel, making fun of Minkovski, pulling an exaggerated face and sticking his fingers up on his head to mime devil's horns. She heard her own voice, light with amusement, telling him to stop before Minkovski caught him. Him, calling her a spoilsport, his mouth wide open in a laugh, his eyes crinkling as he cracked up at her attempt at sarcasm. "It's..." Hera didn't know what to say. She felt trapped by the flashes - didn't understand how...why...any of it was happening. Kelsier knew. He understood without her having to say anything, which was a relief, because she didn't know what to say. He'd been there, and now he wasn't there, and he would never be there again. That was all there was to it. "It's fine," she finished, finally. "His name was Doug. Doug Eiffel. He was..." A millions words flashed through her mind in a nanosecond. "He was my friend."

Sal knew better than to pry. What had thrown off the mood was none of his business. It was also not Zuko’s fault, as far as he could tell. The House had given him the paper, and whatever was on it, he had a hard time believing it had been an accident. This might have been his first journey into this place, but it seemed far too powerful to be both clueless and functional at the same time. “Thirteen?” He asked, a bit of surprise leaking into his voice. It hadn’t occurred to him that kids could be pulled in, but then…he wasn’t technically that much older than thirteen, was he? It was funny, how every age felt younger once he’d left it behind. “So you probably know a lot more than me about this place,” he guessed after a moment. “I know you said the rooms can be dangerous. Is there anything else I should know?”

Was this Hera’s first room? It at least had to be close to it, Kelsier knew. Time may have been impossible to predict here, but people weren’t. She would probably have said something about it if it had been a long time since she’d seen him last. He watched the memories as they flashed, very aware that this wasn’t his to see. There was nothing he could do about that, though, and he refused to feel guilty for someone else’s crimes. “Doug Eiffel,” he repeated, watching the man. He looked happy. He wondered what had happened to him. The room changed again. Kelsier expected another memory, more of Hera’s friend maybe, or something else she remembered… But that wasn’t what happened. It was dark, but not too dark to see. It was a roof, high above the ground, ash falling gently like gray snowflakes, the sky starless and shifting. Two people stood at the edge looking out, their backs to Kelsier, though he didn’t know where Hera was. A dark haired woman stood next to a younger version of Kelsier, with shorter hair and no scars on his arms, visible because the two were holding hands. The older, scarred Kelsier didn’t speak. He just looked, as ash settled quietly in his hair.

Nico wasn’t sure how to respond to Mare. He had asked her something that was far too personal. It was the kind of question that he wouldn’t have answered, in her position. It was a question that she had answered regardless. Nico tried to shake off the feeling that he shouldn’t have asked in the first place. He also had to consider that Kelsier could only hear the question, not the answer. It was the kind of question that was bound to be upsetting to him, too, depending on what the answer was… Nico needed to keep his nose in his own business. But Kelsier was his dad now, so wasn’t this sort of his business, too? “I don’t meant to be cynical,” he said after a moment, staring at the ground and the drawings of flowers instead of at Mare, “but everyone’s a memory all the time. I mean… the version of me that exists in your head is only a fragment of who I am. The version of me that exists in Kelsier’s head might be a slightly larger fragment, but it’s still only a piece of who I am. How you think of me and how he thinks of me is always going to be informed by what I’ve done in the past. Everyone is making decisions about who you are regardless. Being dead doesn’t mean people suddenly start doing that.” He knew what she meant, though. If she was dead, she couldn’t speak back. She couldn’t defend herself and tell the world exactly who she was and how it differed from what other people thought about her. “I don’t… think death is the end, in your world,” he whispered after a moment, shifting his position. “I don’t know if every world has an afterlife, but I get the sense that yours does. Whatever lays beyond is just… a transition. Which means it’s another place that you get to define who you are.”

Nico watched Kelsier for a long moment before he settled down next to him, considering briefly before deciding he would feel much safer with Kelsier closer. He pushed any fear away from his mind, then curled in against Kelsier, letting his eyes close as he felt the steady rise and fall of Kelsier’s chest behind him. He curled in closer, then let sleep take him. The dreams were quick to come, as they often were. It was as though they could tell he didn’t sleep enough and were always lying in wait, ready to claim him as soon as he decided it was worth taking the risk of closing his eyes. He tried to push past the feeling of being surrounded on all sides, tried to breathe air that wasn’t there, but the memories hurtled into his dreams and smothered him before he could utter so much as a word in protest. He could see the monsters at the edge of his vision, moving forward and scraping their claws against his skin, snapping at him with their teeth, but it was impossible to make out specific monsters. It was like a black mass converging on him, holding him down and whispering in his ear, reminding him that there was no way out. No way out. No. Way. Out. A scream died in Nico’s throat.

Kelsier | Power Swap Room | strider“This is not a nightmare.” Kelsier’s voice rang out, clear and certain, washing over the dream like the first light of dawn. There was no way he could be between Nico and the monsters, no room for him between skin and claws, but there he was, unarmed and unflinching as he stood with his back to Nico. He couldn’t save Nico from his memories. He couldn’t save Nico from his war. But he could save him from this. These were powerless creatures in a world he was currently the god of. And if Kelsier was anything at all, if he had anything at all, he had his will. And here? That was all he needed. The monsters crumbled to dust at his feet, and a wind took it away, because they were no longer in darkness. Sunlight rained down on them, the kind he had only ever seen in the House. Flowers, the flowers he had seen in that first, or technically second, room with Nico blossomed under and around them, brighter even than they had been originally. There were no butterflies. Kelsier blinked. There they were, as if they’d always been there.

Orpheus’ songs had a tendency to get caught in L’s head. He didn’t know what it meant, really…just that it happened, and he didn’t often have songs in his head, so it had been the one he’d reached for. He tended to like Orpheus’ songs better than most, too. Maybe that was just because they were friends, though…he had noticed that most people liked things that came from people they liked better than things that didn’t, even when the things themselves were unchanged. He watched Orpheus for a moment, searching their expression. They weren’t just saying that to compliment him, he decided after a moment. “You’re the poet. If you say it was good, you would know better than I would,” he replied, dipping his head a little. “So I suppose I am. The signs themselves aren’t necessarily rhythmic in nature - not all of them, anyway - but like spoken words, it depends on the order of them and the way you make them. Timing is important. It’s a lot like translating a song into any other language, some words need adjusted so they still connect, but the meaning still comes across. In a good translation, at least.” He began to sign again, much slower this time. “It’s the one you sang in our first room together,” he told them, so they'd at least be able to follow the rhythm.

L Lawliet | Forest Room | mintedstar/fur L could understand the bitterness in Kid’s tone. He had to wonder whether he’d feel it, too, under different circumstances. If he were the one who felt like the House didn’t see him as interesting enough to keep. He didn’t think he was in that situation, but then again…how would he be able to tell that for sure? He didn’t pretend to know how the House’s mind worked, even if he would very much like to. “I don’t know many people here, not personally,” he admitted a moment later, frowning a little. “Have you met Myrnin? He’s a vampire, and immortal. I don’t think I know anyone else, though. There are a surprisingly small group if blinkers I’d be able to tell you about, considering how long I’ve been blinking. I’ve talked to people once of twice, but only a few have ended up in the same place as me enough times to let me get to know them at all.” He was, of course, excluding Czeslaw from that list. The boy was immortal, but he was also very clear about not wanting that known. Not only would it be a breach of privacy, it wouldn’t help, because Czeslaw was highly unlikely to offer anything like advice, anyway. He hesitated, then tilted his head up, looking at the sky, the rain dripping into his eyes and making him blink. For what it’s worth, House…I would prefer you didn’t stop blinking him in, please.”
"I've met him briefly," Kid said after a second. "I can't say whether or not I liked him." His brief interactions with Myrnin hadn't exactly been notable. They'd just both been in the same room together. It was a situation not particularly unusual when it came to randomly blinking into one of the more crowded rooms in the House. He hadn't been in one of them for a while. "Alright though. I suppose if I see him I will ... make an attempt to interact." It was hard to make promises about any sort of interaction in the House. Particularly considering what he'd just mentioned about his ability to appear (or not appear) in a timely fashion. He had to smile at L's request to the sky though. That did amuse him. "Oh, it's worth a lot," he assured. "I promise." He just wasn't that sure what else to do now. "Where should we go?" he asked. He felt like L should probably lead the way on this one. L Lawliet | Forest Room | mintedstar/furL nodded. He couldn’t say for sure that he recommended going to Myrnin for advice - his own relationship to the vampire was complicated, and he would have been hesitant to accept the advice himself - but at least he was immortal. And old. Very old. So he probably knew something about living as someone who wasn’t likely to die. L didn’t. He was probably going to die before most people did. It was an occupational hazard. He wasn’t very confident that the request had done anything. But…if there was even a chance it could help…he had to try, didn’t he? “Well,” he replied, turning to consider their options. The rain hit his face, a soft mist, and he blinked to see better. “Would you rather go deeper into the forest, or see what’s outside it?”

“Good question,” Sherlock replied, waving a hand at the comment. “And in just six short words, you’ve proven that you’re smarter than pretty much everyone I work with, maybe not much of an achievement there, but credit where credit is due, I suppose…” A small, semi approving smile appeared for a moment before it vanished again, and he dropped his hand and settled into a more comfortable position on the floor, which included giving Amico a little more space. “Something like that. Not usually cows though, little bit more along the lines of murder. As for why, well, why don’t you?” "So you do steal cows," Amico said with a decided wrinkle to his nose and a very definite look of distrust. Apparently this would be the sort of reaction that Sherlock would be subjected to on the sole basis that Amico didn't seem to be willing to trust much of anyone. He at least liked that Sherlock was giving him space, though he didn't like that he wasn't sure where he'd go, should Sherlock try and chase him. There were too many doors. "... Or you murder people?" he said, taking several steps back. This was confusing him. "Why don't I murder people?" “What? What on earth are you talking about? Why would I steal a cow? What would I do with it? Where would I put it? What do cows eat?” The questions were fired off rapidly, one after the other. Sherlock narrowed his eyes. This wasn’t going how he’d intended it to. “No. Solve murders other people did. Obviously,” he said after a moment, expression clearing as he realized what Amico was talking about. “I don’t kill people, too much work really, not nearly rewarding enough, and bodies are annoying to hide, not to mention tiring, although if I ever did decide to, I would at least know exactly how…”

The fact that Sal wasn’t asking about what had caused Zuko’s mood shift was enough to endear the other boy to Zuko. If the way he was approaching the room hadn’t already done it. It wasn’t difficult for Zuko to decide he liked this boy, despite only having met him moments before. He was cool, which Zuko didn’t admit about other people very often. And he wasn’t prying about things that Zuko didn’t want to think about, let alone discuss with a stranger. “Yeah,” he said after a moment, giving a small shrug. “I mean, it’s not like I’ve been blinking in nonstop since then, but yeah. I’ve been through a lot of rooms. Not all of them are like this, but some are. I mean… this is actually kind of tame for a room. It could still kill you, but only if you’re not being especially careful. Some rooms don’t make it quite that easy to avoid the danger. But then again I guess some rooms aren’t dangerous at all, so…” he gave a small shrug, not sure if that was the kind of information that Sal was looking for.

As quickly as the overwhelming feeling had overcome Nico, it was gone. He breathed out, eyes wide as he realized his surroundings had completely changed. Not for the first time, Nico wished his powers worked on his own dreams. Then he would be able to avoid nightmares this easily. Instead, he just had to face them like they didn’t haunt him even when his eyes were open. He gave Kelsier a smile he didn’t particularly feel (he couldn’t help but wonder if Kelsier was capable of telling the difference between the smiles he meant and the ones he forced for Kelsier’s sake), then tried to adjust to the new dream. “You know… I guess I’ve never really thought about how much this ability of mine is like the House,” he admitted after a moment, doing his best to sound like the realization didn’t bother him. “I mean… if I really wanted to, I could act like the House in someone’s dreams. I could throw them into rooms they have no hope of surviving. The only difference is that they’d wake up at some point.” He shifted uncomfortably, brow furrowing as he realized the implications of the power. “And to think I didn’t consider this particular ability very useful,” he quipped, hiding the way his face paled.

Orpheus didn’t tend to compliment people ‘just because.’ They didn’t like to say things that weren’t true. If L’s rhythm had been off, they wouldn’t have said anything at all. They wouldn’t have said anything mean, of course, though they would have been happy to give constructive criticism had L asked for. They shook the thought away, giving L a firm nod. They had said what they meant, and they were glad that L hadn’t tried to argue with the compliment. “I think… I’d like to learn how to do that,” Orpheus admitted, intrigued by the rhythmic aspect of the signs. “I suppose in spoken language there are some things that you can’t say in certain rhythms because it simply takes the mouth too long to form certain words, so that same limitation wouldn’t actually be too much of an issue in sign language. Although… rhythm is bound to be slower for me at first, if I don’t know how to move from sign to sign as quickly and fluidly as you do. I can imagine it’s the kind of thing that comes with practice.” They blushed, eyes turning down with the realization that they were getting ahead of themself. “Oh,” Orpheus murmured, surprised that L remembered that song. Surprised that L remembered any songs, if they were honest. A tiny glow of warmth flickered to life in their chest, though they didn’t give voice to it yet. “I see,” they said after a moment, beginning to sing quietly as they watched the rhythm of L’s hands.

Sal glanced down, giving a small nod. It was hard to remember that this room could still end up being dangerous…he didn’t think it would, but it was his first time, so he didn’t think his opinion counted for that much. He probably needed to be more careful than he had been. At least Zuko knew more than he did. That meant he’d probably notice if Sal was doing something wrong. “So they’re pretty hard to predict,” he guessed, glancing at the wall again. It felt like there was a way to use this more, but he couldn’t think how…and whatever had happened before could happen again. Was that the House’s way of warning them not to push their luck? “How do people usually get out of rooms?” He asked after a second, looking back at Zuko. “I mean, not that I want to right now, but just in general.”

“Yeah,” Zuko replied, shrugging a little as he looked around. “I guess… most of the time, when you figure out what the House wants, it opens a door and you go back to the living room. Or you just blink out. It kind of… depends. How rooms end is about as unpredictable as the rest of the House, I guess.” In truth, Zuko wasn’t entirely certain why this room hadn’t ended yet. It seemed like they were both done with the room’s activity, and neither seemed inclined to take another turn. Zuko hesitated, frowning a little. “I guess… if you’re ready to leave, then I have an idea.” He didn’t know if he was ready to leave or not. He was enjoying spending time with Sal, but he didn’t know if the feeling was reciprocated. He didn’t know if Sal wanted to leave or not… it was hard to tell what people were feeling, usually, but it was even harder with Sal’s prosthetic. He picked up a brown marker, turning back to look at Sal.

Sal Fisher | Pictionary Room | striderSal nodded a little, falling silent, mostly because he didn’t think any of his other questions were going to be very helpful here. He didn’t know that he wanted out now, exactly…Zuko was cool, and it was like having a lucid dream and knowing you might wake up and never be in this world again. There were so many doors…the idea that he would only get to go through one was just sad. But he didn’t just want to sit here doing nothing, either, and they’d done about all he could think of with the art. Except actually making art. Not that Sal could make art anyway. He wanted to ask if there was a way to leave without blinking out, but he had a feeling there was no way to tell. “Yeah, sure. If you’re ready,” he replied, and moved a little closer to see what Zuko was doing.

Zuko glanced over at Sal, then at the whiteboard. He could draw something, but… whatever Sal guessed would be the answer, he supposed. He was just going to draw a door. Whether Sal guessed it was a door to the living room or a door to another room… either answer would technically be wrong, but they would give them a way out. It was in Sal’s hands, now. He gave a small, uncertain smile before he drew a large rectangle on the board, then picked up a yellow marker to draw the doorknob. He was trying to make it look as much like the House doors as possible, but it didn’t really matter. It was technically just supposed to be a random door. It wasn’t supposed to lead anywhere. Hopefully, Sal would get what Zuko was aiming for.

Sal Fisher | Pictionary Room | striderSal watched, studying the door as it came into being. Because it had to be a door, right? He couldn’t think what else it would be. The problem was, if it actually was a door, Sal guessing it wouldn't make it appear. He glanced at Zuko, trying to figure out what he intended, here…he wasn’t sure how specific it had to be for the House to count it as correct. Maybe there was room for technicalities here, too. “Is it…a way out?” He attempted, looking back at the door. If Zuko was just drawing a door that wasn’t related to getting out…would that count as a wrong answer? It was the only thing he could think of.

Zuko looked over at Sal, a half-smile on his face. “No, it’s not.” The House responded in kind, a door appearing on the wall nearest to Sal. Zuko stepped around the small pile of fire flakes on the floor, moving towards the new door. He pulled it open, looking over at Sal and holding it open to him. He didn’t know where it led – he couldn’t tell from here, like most doors in the hallway. He had a feeling it wasn’t the living room, but it was hard to tell. He glanced at Sal, half hoping he would have a chance to do another room with the other boy.

Sal Fisher | Shapeshifter Room | striderAnd there it was. Sal moved towards the door, unable to completely hide his surprise. He hadn’t actually expected that to work, but…unless they couldn’t actually go through, it looked like it had. Then again, almost everything else had been the sort of thing he’d have expected from a typical genie - technically what you’d asked for but in no way what you wanted. He glanced at Zuko. At least the fire flakes had been good. He stopped in front of it, peering in, but it was as impossible to see what was inside as the door to this room had been. “Here goes,” he said finally, steeled himself, and stepped through.
