Sal didn’t know what Zuko was thinking. He had liked the hug, but then, he also hadn’t received that many in his short life, at least not recently. He wasn’t going to think about that though. He promised himself that he wouldn’t make Zuko sad again if he could help it. Only happy things from then on. Like...like turtle ducks and kittens and maybe butterflies and rainbows, if Zuko was okay with that. He bounced on his heels, waving his arms a little in his excitement. “We could maybe have a sleepover!” He crowed. “If it’s okay with you! I could come and see your palace! I’ve never been in a palace before, just apartments and libraries and stuff. You really live in a palace? That’s so cool.” His eyes widened a little at the bow, and he hurriedly copied it, not wanting to seem rude. “It’s nice because a cat can be a best friend.” He said confidently. “So I’m learning how to be a friend, I’m case I meet a human who wants to be one, too. That way I’ll be ready.” He looked up, startled as another kid called out. He hesitated, eyes shifting to Zuko for a moment before he looked at the other kid again. “No one voted for you,” he pointed out, eyes narrowing a little. Zuko was right, why should they listen to that kid just because he was loud? Juuzou considered that, then broke into a small, shy smile. “Oooh.” He replied. “It works on nightmares? Maybe I’ll use it, then,” He pinched himself again, experimentally. It didn’t wake him up, so he relaxed. This was real. Which meant there was something outside of what he knew. This knowledge seemed important to hold onto. He looked up as Ronan yelled, then looked back at Michael, eyed widening. “Did he mean me, too?” He whispered, pure shock written across his pale skin. “Okay. Yes. I would like to help stack the tables.” He was exceptionally strong for his age, though he didn’t know it. He stepped towards a table, inspecting it before giving it a hard shove. Ronan didn’t get the immediate response he wanted, that was for sure. The other kids just sort of...looked at him. He gave a noisy, exasperated sigh and crossed his arms over his chest, tapping his foot the way Declan did when he was annoyed. He tried to think of what might get their attention. Clearly, the suggestion itself wasn’t cutting it. Maybe he needed to shock them into it? They clearly did not understand how cool he and Czerny were. He permitted Noah to take his hand, and pretended it was for the other boy and not because it made him feel braver. “You have a better idea?” He inquired, smiling lazily at Zuko. “Don’t be a jerk.” This, he knew, was a dangerous thing to say, and he relished the thrill of it leaving his lips for all to hear. Surely that would startle them into taking this seriously. Varian wasn’t at all sure he followed that logic, but he was willing to give it a try. It wasn’t like he thought that Nico was wrong, it was just that...he was pretty sure Nico was wrong. “Magic isn’t really explained?” He attempted. “Not like science is, I don’t know what an automobile is...uh…So I can’t really tell whether that’s magic or alchemy. But I’m pretty confident that there’s a difference.” He wasn’t trying to be mean, but he was very, very sure that he was right. “Of course! No big deal,” he added, giving a wide smile as Nico continued. “You’re trustworthy. Oh, I’ll even let you add the last ingredient when you visit!” This was no small sacrifice, as Varian absolutely loved that part, but he was willing to make it. For a friend. He looked up as Ronan called again, eyes narrowing. He gave a loud, convincing, very fake cough. “Hey, uh, kind of in the middle of a conversation?” He called back. Spook looked up as he noticed the stranger, eyes taking in the fancy clothes he’d torn off, and the hair tied in a fancy knot. He looked...very noble. Spook eyed him, unsure what to do with the conflicting factors of age and clothes. He’d never considered the idea of a noble child, and it made him distinctly uncomfortable. Kids, he knew, were supposed to be ragged and half starved, like he was. You couldn’t trust them anymore than you could trust a feral dog, but in the same way, they weren’t cruel. Just desperate. He didn’t mind the semi indecency. He’d seen worse on the streets. The boy approached him, and Spook scooted back a little, head lowered and eyes averted. A noble boy seemed likely to be as awful as a noble man, right? He couldn’t see why he wouldn’t be, especially when Spook was so obviously Skaa. He risked a glance up, eyes fearful. He wanted to burn tin to give himself some semblance of control, but he knew that if he was caught, he’d be killed faster than he could blink.

Matt | Pride room 2.0 | ®Hawkpath® strider |Matt blinked into the living room, lying on the floor, his arms spread out to either side of his head. "I don't care if it's 90 degrees," he began. "I don't care if it's 200 degrees, or 1000 degrees. I am not putting on a T shirt."

A small, skinny boy with a narrow face, brown hair, and soft eyes blinked in, hands clasped in front of him and eyes carefully watching his surroundings. He started badly as he processed his blink, dropping the spoon he’d been clutching and immediately stumbling backwards. His eyes widened as he took it in...it looked a whole lot like a nobleman’s study, or what he assumed one would look like. There was someone on the floor. He froze, heart thumping wildly. They know. They know I’m an Allomancer.

L nodded, guessing Orpheus wouldn’t recognize the term. He would explain it, then. It wasn’t going to be anything like the price Orpheus was thinking of. He wanted Orpheus to feel like they could be part of it too, if they wanted to be. So they lived in a much different time. So they didn’t experience the same things L and other people like him did. That was fine. In an ideal world, no one would ever be told they were wrong for who they were. If Orpheus was a little closer to that, they should hardly be shunned for it. “I think you would like it,” he replied softly, giving a tiny smile. “It’s...well. It tends to be hot outside. Because of when it is. But it’s also a place where there is a lot of happiness, and truthfully, I think there could be more of that in the world. It’s a side of humanity I don’t see often.” He lived surrounded by death and pain. He saw the desperate people, the grievers, the murderous, the lost. He rarely saw happiness, and when he did, it was often twisted. But he had seen pride before. And he he knew that it was proof that after the fire burned out, things could still grow back even healthier then before. “I’d take you,” he answered, a bit sadly. “I haven’t gone in a very long time. I think...it would be different, with a friend. Better, perhaps. I may bring pictures at some point, when that’s possible again.” He didn’t mean to say ‘when’ instead of ‘if’, but he did anyway.

Orpheus | Living Room | Shrike “Oh,” Orpheus murmured, trying to take that in. They couldn’t imagine being shoehorned into a profession at the age of twelve, but they supposed they had chosen what they wanted to do with their life when they were much, much younger. But nobody had collected data on them and forced them into it, they had just… been drawn to music. They had played it whenever possible, had bugged Apollo until they learned everything there was to know. They were surprised Apollo had been willing to keep teaching them, but they supposed that passion like that was hard to come by, especially in small children. Apollo had been surprisingly pleased by Orpheus’ desperation to play. “Which… branch are you part of?” they asked after a long moment, hoping that was an appropriate way to steer the conversation. Starling’s world sounded very different from theirs, and though they was trying not to judge it too harshly, the no music rule was a dealbreaker for them. They weren’t sure they would be able to live without music. It was as vital to them as oxygen or water. “Is there no… retirement? I mean… the chance to take off of work when you’re old enough and just… explore the world and see things, or just find a couple of hobbies that make you happy and not have to worry about going out and doing work? I mean… does your home have no town elders who pass on stories and do little else?” It was incredibly foreign to Orpheus, though their tone was laced with curiosity rather than judgment. It was just somewhere different. Somewhere that Starling was probably quite attached to, and Orpheus didn’t want to question that or offend him. They were just… curious. “My world… well, I suppose we have jobs, but they’re more casual, and you can move from one to another pretty easily. Sometimes people become apprentices in a trade they’re passionate about, or in a trade their parents think they would do well in, so they train under a master for a long time until they’re good enough to either take over for the master or set up shop somewhere else. But I don’t think that’s very similar to your Designations.” Orpheus took a breath, their thumb brushing over a guitar string as they listened to Starling’s explanation. “I’m not too surprised,” they admitted, though they were a little disappointed. “I’ve considered the fact that my gods may be dead in the future. If there’s nobody around to worship them, if there’s nobody who remembers who they are, what power do they have to live off of? So it’s… well, I think it might be likely that nobody in your world has spoken with a god.” It was odd, thinking that their gods might not be around at some point. They were so lively and powerful in Orpheus’ time… “Yes.” It was much easier to talk about music than the death of their gods. “Here,” they added, handing over the guitar so Starling could try holding it. “If you press down in certain places, different notes are produced. And… as long as you want to learn, whatever pace you learn at is fast enough for me.”

Spook looked up sharply as he caught sight of someone...appearing out of nowhere. He backed away. This wasn’t anything he wanted anything to do with, this...this unknown. This wasn’t Allomancy, at least not any kind he knew of. He didn’t speak, but he did jump as the person on the floor sat up and spoke. His eyes darted between the strangers - he’d dropped the spoon, his only weapon - and waited. Whether that was for an attack or an explanation, he couldn’t tell.

“Newbies?” Wylan repeated, voice uncertain. He reached into his pocket for the explosives he had been carrying for his job, then froze as he realized they weren’t there. Where… where were they? He couldn’t just… he couldn’t just be unarmed, could he? Panic flooded through him and he took a step back, trying to tell if either of the others were armed. In Ketterdam, everyone was. And he had every reason to believe he was still in Ketterdam. Had he been drugged? His eyes widened at the thought, but he quickly pushed it away. There would be side effects if he had been, right? “Where is… here?” Although he wasn’t convinced that the effort wouldn’t get him killed Wylan was going to try to be brave. It was the only thing he could think to do in a situation like this. After all… he was still alive, so he had been doing something right since he’d left home. And Matt didn’t seem much like a criminal…

Matt | Pride 2.0 | ®Hawkpath® strider |"Oh boy..." muttered Matt in dismay, as both newbies reacted with complete and utter panic to the situation. "Okay, so, this is the Paradox House, and it's kind of a place? But also not, and it's really really big and there's no way out but it's fine because you'll blink back to your own world eventually, and no one can really agree on what it is exactly and I dunno either cause I'm not a scientist but I feel like it's some kind of pocket dimension? I saw a documentary on those one time so I guess they're real and stuff. Anyways." He took a breath, offering the newbies a second crooked smile. "If you guys need to like, scream, or swear, or anything, that's cool. I'm Matt."

Spook felt like he was learning less, not more, as Matt tried to explain what was happening. What Matt said was that it was fine and he didn’t need to panic. What he heard was there’s no way out.He didn’t know what a pocket dimension or a documentary was. He didn’t even recognize the name Matt...weird name. The screaming sounded semi appealing, but he didn’t take the offer. Did they even know slang? He doubted it. The other kid, maybe. But Matt? Not likely. Which meant he couldn’t communicate even if he wanted to.

“How can something be both a place and not a place?” Wylan asked, the scientific part of himself winning out over the nervous part. He still didn’t know where he was, and he didn’t think he trusted Matt, but he was being nice so far. It was possible that was just because he had singled Wylan and the other boy out as easy marks, but… but something about him seemed genuine in the easy, calm way that criminals never were. Wylan would know, having worked with enough of them by now. Having practically been one now. He didn’t have to like it, but crime paid. Well. “Screaming sounds… like a bad idea,” he added, crossing his arms over his chest to hide the fact that his hands were shaking a little bit. “I mean… this place has to belong to someone, right? And we’re probably not supposed to be here…”

Matt | Pride 2.0 | ®Hawkpath® strider |"Not gonna lie, my first week here, I went out in the hallway and just screamed at the top of my lungs," said Matt, shrugging. "I don't think this is an 'owned' kind of place." He blinked slowly, registering Wylan's first question. "Dude, I one hundred percent do not know," he said, enunciating the words clearly to emphasize them. "Believe me, I am not the guy you wanna be asking. Anyway, uh..." He paused, realizing he didn't know either of their names. Had they told him already? Oh god, he hoped they hadn't, because he had no memory of it. "Uh....so," he continued, glancing over at Spook. "You look super freaked. Which is fair, totally fair. Any, uh....burning questions?"

Spook was inclined to believe Matt. He didn’t know whether that was a stupid instinct...it probably was...but he couldn’t help it. He never met people this...genuine. Even people like Hammond had an angle. Matt probably did too, but Spook couldn’t for the life of him tell what it might be. The other boy seemed closer to Spook, in that he didn’t seem to know what was happening at all. He flinched as Matt looked at him, taking a small step backwards. “What’s a documentary?” He blurted out, blushing as he realized that was the least relevant question he could have asked. He didn’t expect to be understood, anyway.

“You’re the only one here,” Wylan replied after a long moment, brow furrowing as he realized Matt was serious about not knowing. He didn’t know how you could be used to a place like this without at least being able to answer some of the questions about what it was, but… well, there were plenty of things that were unknowable. And there were plenty of things that Wylan was bad at knowing that nobody else seemed to have any problem with. He shifted uncomfortably, grateful when Matt directed his attention at the other boy. He was curious about him… he seemed like someone who might live on the streets of Ketterdam. It made him both familiar and a threat at the same time. His question was surprising, but Wylan couldn’t help the curiosity that rose in his own chest. “I’d like to know that, too, actually. I’ve… never heard of that.”

Kelsier didn’t move from his crouch, didn’t move as he waited for hands for seize him and pin him down. Why weren’t they coming? They knew. They knew he wouldn’t attack again. His hatred had been enough once. But doing it again, trying again...that felt impossible. It was much harder to try and stitch yourself up when you were aware of how much it was going to hurt. It was much harder to face something you were afraid of after it had bitten you already. Kelsier had lost Nico. Had seen his body. Had felt him go limp. Now that he knew that pain...was he capable of doing it again? He couldn’t tune Nico’s voice out, no matter how much he wanted to. He had to listen to Hades do his absolute best to break his heart He would never, ever admit to anyone that Hades succeeded. “I think,” he said finally, voice steady. “That you’re going to have to do much better than that if you want to break me. Now get out of my sight.”

“Ah, so it happens in the summer?” Orpheus asked, brows raising a little bit. They wanted to know as much about this ‘pride’ as they could. Would it be unrealistic to instate it in their own world? There was no reason for those people to band together without the structures of oppression that vilified them in the first place, but people liked to party. People liked getting together to celebrate something, so they didn’t think it would be terribly difficult to create some sort of pride event, even if it wasn’t exactly like the ones L was talking about. “I like seeing people happy,” they added, though that was probably obvious from the numerous conversations the two of them had shared in the blinks before. “I think there should be more events where people can be happy like that. Maybe you have more than we do, but we… well, a lot of our celebrations have to do with the gods. But sometimes I wish we had more celebrations to talk about ourselves, instead. To be happy in our humanity, to not strive for godhood.” Orpheus didn’t know if most people wanted to be gods or if that was just the mindset of the men they were traveling with. They hoped it was the latter. They loved Hermes, and they loved Apollo, but there were things humans had that gods never would, and those things were precious. “I think… I’d like to go. I’d like to see it,” they decided, a smile stretching across their face. “Maybe one day the House will be kind enough to show me. I’d like to see it with you, so you can explain things to me and maybe it won’t be as overwhelming because you have a friend. But… for now… I’d like to see pictures. Pictures…” they frowned, thinking over the word. “I worry that may not have translated correctly. What do you mean by ‘pictures?’”

Nico didn’t know what he expected. Part of him hoped that he might be able to shock Kelsier back to normal. That he might be able to say the right thing to bring him back, because nothing else had worked. He was tired. He was so tired of his dad being right there but not being able to do anything to save him. This… this man wasn’t Kelsier. It was a shell of Kelsier, and Nico kept cutting himself on the shards Hades had broken it into. He thought he might hate Hades, more than he hated Kelsier at the moment. More, even, than he was used to hating himself. It allowed him a breath of fresh air; a moment away from the guilt. “Since I met you,” Nico managed in a soft, still garbled voice, “there were three things I wanted out of life. First… to fix the mess I made. I don’t… think that’s possible. Two… to not be like my father. To be… to be better than him. To fix what he had broken. And… and three? To make you proud. And I haven’t… I can’t do any of those things. I’m sorry.” He angrily wiped a tear from his cheek, turning on his heel to leave the tent. He told himself he didn’t if Kelsier attacked again. He was lying.

It hurt. It hurt more than Kelsier could possibly have words for. The things he had gone through were nothing, nothing to this. He felt it in ever cell in his body, every molecule screamed out in agony, begging to be silenced. He wanted to scream. He wanted to give in, just give in, how hard could it be? All he had to do was call him Nico. All he had to do was relax and let the fight go out of him and apologize and beg for forgiveness and...and the worst part was that he could do it. He knew he could. It would be so easy to just believe, for just a second, that this could be real. Then he could go back to being strong. Then he could become unbreakable again. Except he couldn’t. The moment he let himself even come close to believing in this, he wouldn’t be able to stop. The only thing worse than constant pain was a brief pause in it. He wanted to attack again. He wanted to run at him, to destroy Hades. What sort of father was he, letting him walk away? Would he go back to Nico, hurt him, show him footage of Kelsier allowing him to leave, as proof that he was really broken? “I am not broken,” he murmured. “I am not broken. I am not broken. I am not broken. I am not…” He didn’t stop saying it. He couldn’t tell if he was telling Nico, or himself.

Zuko liked happy things. He liked the idea of not thinking about the things that made him and Sal sad… he didn’t want to say any topic was off limits because that was something the grown-ups would say, but he did think it was probably for the best to avoid the things that might hurt either one of them. Sal deserved better than to be sad. “A sleepover?” Zuko asked, tilting his head at the unfamiliar term. “I… I don’t know what that is. But I like the idea of you coming to see the palace! You wouldn’t like my little sister very much – she’s mean – but we could play and do stuff and I could show you the palace while Azula plays with her friends. And nobody can make me play with them cause I’ll have a friend of my own there, and being a good host is more important than playing with Azula, because she already has friends. Perhaps Zuko was getting a little too excited about this, but it had been a while since he was excited about anything. He just hoped Sal didn’t mind. “I think you’re a good friend,” he informed Sal, nodding sagely. “You’re nice. I would like… a sleepover.” He was pointedly ignoring Ronan, now. He would rather spend time getting to know Sal and being his friend than being bossed around by someone who wasn’t even polite enough to say ‘please.’ Iroh would have hated him. Ozai would have loved him. Zuko was conflicted. He admired the kid, he just hated being told what to do by people his own age. He didn’t like being called a jerk, either, but he thought Azula had probably said worse. “Yep,” Newt confirmed, giving a rather serious nod. “At least… when I have nightmares and I think about whether or not I’m dreaming, I pinch myself. And if it doesn’t feel real, then I know that I’m in a dream and that whatever is in there with me isn’t real. But if it does feel real, then I just pinch harder, and if I wake up, then I know I was asleep. If I don’t, then I was probably awake and just… letting my imagination be mean.” Newt wanted to help, too, especially if his new friend was doing it. “I think he meant all of us,” he replied, eyes widening in awe and shock at the force with which Juuzou moved the table. “Nice!” he commented, looking up to give Ronan a thumbs up as he began to push some of the tables closer together as well. Noah looked up at Ronan as he crossed his arms. He was clearly disappointed that very few people had taken them up on their offer to stack the tables. Didn’t they understand that it was going to be fun? “If we stack the tables we can all be really tall and we can jump between them and it’ll be really fun!” he exclaimed loudly enough for everyone else in the room to hear him. It was a very different strategy than Ronan’s, but maybe one of the two would work. Or maybe both would work and they would have everyone’s help in no time. “We shoulda had the idea sooner,” he grumped, pursing his lips and rocking back and forth on his heels. “If we had, we would’ve been able to get everyone to help us before they had all split off and started different conversations. Also, my mom would say you have a potty mouth. I like it. It’s exciting.” “I guess there’s a difference,” Nico replied uncertainly, frowning a little. “But we were learning in history class that people thought the sun was controlled by a god a really long time ago before they learned that the Earth spins. So they thought it was magic for a really really long time, but it wasn’t, really. It had a scientific explanation. I think. I asked my teacher why the Earth spins but then she got mad at me for asking too many questions so I had to stand outside the classroom and I missed the end of what she was saying. But basically… I think magic is just science that nobody has explained yet. I don’t think the difference is really that big.” He shook the thought away, not wanting to argue with his new friend. He might be wrong, anyway, and Varian seemed pretty sure he was right… he would ask Bianca when he got home. He trusted Bianca would have the right answer. She was always really smart. “Really?” Nico squeaked, eyes wide. “You’d let me do that?” He was caught up in the euphoria of Varian saving an exciting part for him that it barely registered that Ronan had said a bad word. “Don’t be mean!” he said, crossing his arms as he turned to Ronan. “We’re busy!” Wylan frowned a little bit, unsure why the other boy looked so afraid. Okay… maybe he did understand. He didn’t know how they had gotten here, he just knew that they were here now, and wherever it was, it seemed nice. Well… with the exception of the boy yelling not nice things. He wasn’t going to pay that any attention, because the other boy was alone, and it was more important to make him feel less alone than it was to have fun pushing the tables around. And he was second-guessing idea of pushing around tables wearing nothing but his underclothes. He was already going to make his father mad if he saw him having taken the fancy dress off. “Hi,” Wylan murmured softly to the other boy, pulling his knees close to his chest. He wanted to ask where they were, but he figured it would become apparent with time. This was where he would normally say his name and ask if the other boy wanted to play, but… he didn’t really want to say his name here. He didn’t like his name much at all… but maybe he could invent a new one! “I’m… Wylan,” he decided after a moment, shrugging the name on like a jacket. “Do you wanna be friends?”

The moment Nico was out of the tent he collapsed to his knees, his entire body shaking with silent sobs. He couldn’t let Kelsier hear him. He couldn’t… he couldn’t do anything else to hurt Kelsier. He had already done enough. He pulled his arms around himself, trying to emulate the feeling of being hugged by Kelsier, but it didn’t even come close. He wanted his dad. He wanted the man who had taught him to hope, who had stitched up his wounds, who had told him over and over and over again that trusting was worth it, that there was such a thing as hope, that everything was going to be okay, because they were alive, and as long as they were alive they had a reason to keep smiling. He wanted his dad. Nico was crying now, for real. The tears streaked down his face, not the first set he had shed so far. His neck hurt, but he didn’t dare touch it. He didn’t want to think about it. He didn’t want to remember the feeling of knowing he was going to die at Kelsier’s hand. He didn’t want to think about the fact that the last thing he was ever going to see in Kelsier’s eyes was hatred. He didn’t notice the room around him fading, the hyper realistic and very colorful background of the dream melting into the plain white room from before. It hurt. It hurt, and he couldn’t stop hearing Kelsier’s voice in his ear. I’m not broken. That was a lie. Nico couldn’t help but wonder how long it would be before he broke, too.

Nico wasn’t afraid, not of this room. Oh, he was afraid of heights, but he thought that Sam would catch him before anything went truly bad. Sam was strong, after all, and Nico found he felt safe with their hands clasped together. It was a strange feeling, the unfamiliar but comforting weight of safety being brought on by physical contact. It had been like this once, before Tartarus had taught him true fear. Jumping was almost… freeing. Sam jumped before Nico did so Nico was dragged just a little bit, but it made the whole thing less frightening. He knew Sam would land first, and he knew that Sam would make sure he made it to the platform. Breathlessly, Nico tightened his grip on Sam’s hand as they landed. “That… wasn’t so bad. We can keep doing that without… much problem.” He glanced upward, lips pursing as he noticed the difficultly levels change. “I don’t know if I trust the brown ones,” he murmured, gaze catching Sam’s. “It looks really brittle.” Sam looked up as well, not exactly sure what to make of what he was seeing. There were indeed brittle looking planks of ... wood? "That does not look safe," Sam agreed. "I vote we only jump to those if we really need to." This seemed like a safe enough bet, all things considered. Sam at least hoped it was, at any rate. He wanted to make sure nothing bad happened to either of them. He did look up and scan the various platforms though. Other than the rickety wooden ones, he still saw some solid ones like the one they were standing on. "Let's go for that one," he said, pointing. He squeezed Nico's hand again. "On three." Again, he counted, "One, two, three!"

“Hey, kid. Come back. Come back to me, please… It’s not real. It’s okay, it’s all just a bad dream, and it’s time for you to wake up. I’m here. Nico di Angelo, wake up.” The words were soft and firm at once, like an embrace, insistent and patient as rain against a window. It wasn’t clear how long Kelsier had been speaking, but it was clear he wasn’t going to stop. He tried to keep the pain out of it, tried to put it aside, but there it was, slipping into his steady voice. Again and again and again, the House crossed the line. It had been doing it since the day he’d first blinked, and he knew it wasn’t going to stop, but it didn’t make it any easier to see Nico on his knees, silent sobs wracking his small body. It was guilt the Survivor was meant to feel. Guilt, at seeing his hand cause this. What he felt was revulsion, not guilt. Fury, not self pity. Didn’t it know him at all? Didn’t it know that showing him this, making Nico live this, it only made him more determined to destroy it? Didn’t it know that it wouldn’t be the last god he slayed? Was it so blinded by its own power that it thought he would shatter, was it so convinced it was invincible that it couldn’t see the vengeance in his eyes? “It’s not real. I’m right here. This is just a bad dream, only a nightmare. It can’t hurt you. This will not hurt you. I’m here, I am right here.” Damn you, House. Damn you. The dream faded. Kelsier watched it go. And there was Nico, alone, holding himself for lack of other arms to keep his head above water. And still Kelsier didn’t shatter. “Nico di Angelo. Wake up.”

Czes - amp room - L, Orpheus, unconscious Hook
Czeslaw's eyebrow twitched as L got up out of his chair. "Yes I know you two trust each other, but to be frank, what has that got to do with me trusting either of you?" There was some kind of foul play here. L was acting strange. Well to be more accurate, he always acted strange, and what was wrong was that he was acting like someone else. An expressive, positive blinker that Czeslaw didn't think really fit in that detective's body.
And now Orpheus was backing away? Why couldn't Czeslaw decipher his expression anymore? WHAT was going on?
"You two can drop the acts." He decided against lowering his sword. This was all a little too suspicious. "What's going on here, are you planning something?" The kid looked between Orpheus and L, as if he couldn't afford to look away from either of them for too long. He wasn't one to confront people like this. Instead he always kept his opinions and feelings to himself, no matter how much they wanted to come to the surface. But in this room he couldn't seem to stop himself. "Right after we knocked him out, you two started acting... suspicious," he said bluntly.

L blinked, unsure how to react to the accusation. He wasn’t acting. He couldn’t see why he would want to act...what would he be faking? Why should he? He glanced at Orpheus, then back to Czeslaw, trying to figure out what was happening. His brain was as fast as ever. - trying to put together theories and connect the dots - but without his paranoia, they flew in different directions entirely. Instead of calculating the chances of Czeslaw stabbing Orpheus, he trusted that the immortal wouldn’t do that and began thinking about how to convince them both that everything was fine. “I’m not acting,” he replied, eyes wide as he looked at the immortal. “You’re frightened. Of us? Or the House? It’s only poetry...so far, the only one who’s actually attacked us has been Hook. It hasn’t been a cruel room.” His verbal filter seemed a bit impacted as well. He wasn’t picking and choosing his words with as much precision. “The sword is unnecessary,” he added confidently. “We just need to work together and figure out how to get out of here. Perhaps Hook will wake up soon and be able to help.”

“Mm,” L replied, nodding slightly. “Thirty. That seems right for the time I’ve known you, which is helpfully the time you’ve been blinking in. Of course, time doesn’t reall6 work the same way between the two of us, but it seems relatively steady. There haven’t been any major blips, anyway.” He gave a small nod. “Yes, this is my 84th blink,” he replied simply. “It never occurred to me not to keep track. Numbers are easier to keep track of the time...I couldn’t tell you how long it is between blinks, for example, but the blinks themselves are easy for me. Numbers tend to be important. You never know when you may need a license plate number. Which...makes no sense to you, does it? Suffice to say it’s a number that is sometimes important. It would be helpful if I knew whether there was any pattern to the times I blink in, but as far as I can tell, there isn’t. I’ve often marked down when I blinked in, in case that shed any light on it. No luck.” He trailed off, glancing at Orpheus again. “Oh,” he replied, surprised that he’d forgotten to vocally connect it back to their other conversation. He was more exhausted than he’d thought. “I was wondering how many blinks you’ve met strangers in. It seems that you’ve blinked in with me a significant percentage of your total blinks. I’ve noticed that since meeting you, there’s a high probability that you’ll be there when I blink in. Perhaps the House is interested in our relationship...it’s likely not a coincidence. If we assume that the House is one or more beings, there’s motive. But the point is that you tend to meet people and spend the majority of your blinks with them, coming across others with less frequency, though not never. That’s how it is for me, at least.” He shook his head, abandoning the thought and making a move on the board without looking at it. He knew what he was doing, and he didn’t foresee any problems. Trust was very different once you had lost it, even if it had been a completely unrelated event with a completely unrelated person. And L had been betrayed many, many times. At some point, it was expected that there would be a betrayal, and then you stopped trusting at all so as not to be hurt. It was an effective coping mechanism, he knew, but not a free one. This...if he’d forgotten how to trust entirely, he wouldn’t be here now. He gave a tiny smile as Orpheus spoke. “I’m glad “ he said quietly. “I think that in order to trust, you have to decide that the chances of being betrayed are outweighed by the benefit of that trust. You have an 11% chance of betraying me. Those are acceptable odds.”

Matt | Pride Room 2.0 | ®Hawkpath® strider |"A documentary?" Of all the things he'd expected to be asked to elaborate on, that hadn't been one of them. Although, these two did look like they were either from pretty far in the past, or really into renfaire, so he maybe should've expected it more than he had. "It's like....a movie, but real," he explained, then stopped, running over himself. "Wait no, you probably don't know what a movie is either.......uh. Like a play. But about something that actually happened. It's meant to teach people about something." He shifted uncomfortably, feeling like he'd explained that rather poorly. Well, maybe they'd get it.

Spook blinked, eyes widening as he was understood by both boys. Matt, especially, shocked him...he didn’t look like the sort of person who would understand slang, but maybe that was wrong. Apparently that was wrong. “You can understand me?” He whispered, the actual explanation almost lost in his surprise. “Both of you?” He didn’t know what a movie or a play was, either. He had no idea what Matt was talking about, but somehow, being able to communicate helped a little. He was still ready to bolt. But he could also pay attention.

“Yes, typically. I’m not certain whether that’s a cultural thing, though,” L admitted, frowning a little. “Or rather, it certainly is a cultural thing, but I don’t know if the time is the same in the places that have pride. It’s never come up.” If he’d known what Orpheus was thinking, he’d have been pleased with the idea of bringing it to Orpheus’ world. He didn’t think there would be any catastrophic time related problems. He was technically from the future, but he didn’t know that it mattered much, where he came from. At least, he wasn’t aware of having caused any major changes to the timeline...would he really be able to tell? Well. It wasn’t like he could evade it. And if he tried, someone else would just do whatever he’d avoided anyway. He was confident he wasn’t really to blame for it if it did happen. He nodded, watching Orpheus. He had been aware that the other blinker would be interested in the idea, especially when he’d mentioned that it made people happy. Not enough people were happy, he thought, though he didn’t know for sure whether that was just because of who he interacted with. Happy people didn’t need detectives, generally. “That seems like a good way of looking at it,” he mused. “Striving for godhood seems...a bad idea, if only because it’s entirely unattainable. And also because it’s unnecessary.” He blinked, realizing his mistake. “Ah. My apologies:” he replied. “Naturally, you wouldn’t recognize that term. You don’t have cameras.” He shook his head a little. “It’s...a way of catching a moment on paper. Like a painting, but a machine does it, and it’s exactly how it looked. I’ll show you, next time I have access to one. I’d bring a laptop, but they don’t work here.”

“I’d agree with that vote,” Nico replied softly, staring up at the wood planks. He didn’t want to risk stepping on those, but he had a feeling that the House was going to make it difficult not to. Hopefully, they’d find a way to avoid it. Nico didn’t really want to think about what would happen if they fell from this high up. Would Sam be able to save them somehow? Nico couldn’t find any shadows to melt into all the way up here… “Sure,” he said, pulling his thoughts away and instead focusing on the platform Sam was pointing to. He tightened his grip on Sam’s hand, meeting his eyes for half a second before giving a firm nod and focusing back on the platform. He leapt as soon as Sam reached three, doing his best not to be ahead of or behind Sam. He thought they were getting the hang of this. It was… it was fun, though he found that difficult to admit. It wasn’t often he had fun.“Nice job,” he whispered, letting his shoulder bump against Sam’s as they made it.
