Shapeshifters in WWIV: A Roleplay (Celebrating Ten Years!)

Welcome to the Shapeshifters Rp, a literate Rp one decade old and counting. The Rp was originally started on the official Warriors Forums by a user named Balew in November of 2009, and has changed a lot since then. Its current status is as follows—


The year is 2026. In Europe (mainly Germany), and more recently in some American states, there exist two organizations: the RedKingdom and the WhiteKingdom. Both exist to study shifters, but their ethics are very different. The RK is all about containing the dangers they present, ideally harnessing their power for their own gain, and teaching its shifter members to use their potential. They are known for their "experiments," many of which involve what could easily be called torture. They see the WK as a bunch of cowards who are not willing to sacrifice comfort for the furthering of knowledge, and who would hold shifters back rather than encouraging them to do what they were made to do. The WK's goals are geared more towards protecting shifters and studying them under only the most humane conditions, treating them as absolute equals to regular humans. They perform experiments as well, and admittedly the RK has made advances the WK never could with their self-set limitations—though not as many as the RK would have you think. The WK's secondary-turned-primary goal is the dismantling of the RK. The two organizations are at odds with one another and have been for a very long time, but were secretive, and therefore never went into all-out war before. At least, not until 2009, during which World War III started, and turned the world upside-down.


Lots of rules and history follow. You do not have to read all of it before joining. It's more for referral than anything else.


A brief history of the Rp—
WWIII began when the two organizations began fighting. During 2010, the Nazis sided with the RK, making matters worse. In 2013, the WK lost the war and was forced into hiding. Being caught meant either death or imprisonment by the RK. The now-Nazi-run RK offered the United States and United Kingdom land. After they accepted, the Nazis bombed the land, starting WWIV, which we are currently fighting. The WK had pretty much been scattered and destroyed, but around 2018, a group of determined former WK members banded together and formed a neo-WK. Now, eight years later, it is going strong—a good thing, because the world is now more than aware of the existence of shifters. If you are a shifter, especially in Germany, keep yourself well-hidden, because people are afraid of shifters and will report you to the RK, who they see as their protectors. This would not usually mean immediate imprisonment, but unless you're with them, you're definitely going to be seeing the inside of a cell at some point if you're on their radar; they're excellent at finding reasons. The situation in the United States and the rest of Europe has become very similar. The rest of the world is aware of shifters but is very much trying to stay out of it, and non-European/American shifters have a much easier time staying hidden.
       In 2026, Germany officially split into two separate countries, North Germany and South Germany, the former officially siding with the RedKingdom and the latter with the WhiteKingdom.

The War—

With the RK – USA, North Germany, Russia, and France

The actual fighting happens mainly in France, North and South Germany, and Poland (the latter of which has been pretty much completely torn apart).



Shifters—

-Shifters are immortal. Around their mid-twenties, their aging processes slow down immensely. A 200-year-old shifter might still look to be in his mid to late twenties. They can still be killed by bullets, poison, anything—they just don't get sick and they hardly age, so if they can avoid an unnatural death, they can live indefinitely. There have been legends of shifters who have died of old age, but even if it can happen, it would be very difficult in every way to get that far in one piece.

-After a while, shifters begin to gradually grow feral. The combination of so many sets of survival instincts begins to weigh on them, confusing them and causing them to develop animal-like tendencies even when in human form. Just being human comes less naturally to them. This deterioration usually occurs rather gradually, the rate depending on how often the shifter has shifted in his/her life. The age at which the deterioration begins also depends on this factor. At the earliest, it may begin aroud 85; at the latest, perhaps around 200.

-You can become a shifter in one of three ways—through genetics, being bitten by one, or being injected.

-----If you were born one, that doesn't necessarily mean all your siblings are shifters too, or either of your parents is—the trait is autosomal recessive, meaning it can skip generations and doesn't show up in everyone. Genetically speaking, this also means that if both parents are inborn shifters, all their children will also be, and if only one parent is, there is a 25% chance that any given one of their offspring will be.

-----If you were bitten, for the rest of your life you will have a faint scar to prove it. There is another catch to this method of becoming a shifter—after you are bitten, you become ill. You experience symptoms like weakness, a temperature, violent coughing, etc. Most prominently, the sickness messes with your mind and gives you hallucinations. You gain the ability to shift a few days in but most people don't shift during this sick period because they don't know to. The sickness is not contagious and always lasts for three weeks, give or take a day or so.

-----If you were injected it means at some point you were in the hands of the RK. You could be RK yourself or were imprisoned by them. Following injection, there is a sickness similar to the one following a bite, and it could last up to four weeks, but the hallucinations stop after about four days and after that, unless there are complications, the symptoms will be those of a moderate fever.

-In animal form, shifters cannot speak. That means if two shifters are in animal form, they cannot speak to each other. If one is in animal form and one is human, they cannot speak to each other. They are not capable of conversation with normal animals either, in human or animal form, although animals do tend to like shifters.

-Since shifting expends so much energy, those who shift regularly [which will be basically everyone] must eat a lot more than the average person to make up for it. Think five full meals a day, on average. And yes, this means that it is much harder for them to get overweight, but also much easier for them to go undernourished.

-There's no time limit on shifting. But after a few days, shifters' mental faculties start changing too, to fit the animal form they are in. Remaining shifted for so long that your humanity is no longer intact is virtually unheard of, because you notice this happening. But if for whatever reason you were to stay in the same form frequently enough for long enough, it could have a lasting effect on you.

-The duration of a shift depends on what you are turning into. Namely, the size difference. It is harder and can potentially even be painful for a person to change into, say, a house cat or a large horse, than it is for a person to change into a wolf. Animals smaller than a mouse or larger than the average elephant are off the table, because the biological changes going on during a shift are in reality quite dangerous for shifters, and if the shift were to last long enough for such a drastic change in size to occur, then it would most likely be fatal. So species of these sizes are not coded into a shifter's DNA.



Basic Rp Rules—

-Forum rules are our rules. 'Nuff said.

-No spamming. If you're tracking someone down to say, "Hey, please come (wherever)," it's fine, but no advertising or anything like that. Avoid double posting if possible.

-No godmodding or power playing.

-No Mary Sues or Gary Stus (if you don't know what that entails, a quick Google search will educate you).

-Be literate. Really. Punctuation, capitalization, full words and sentences, the whole nine yards. Absolutely no text talk. If you can't abide by this rule this Rp is not for you.

-If this Rp were a movie, it would probably be PG-13 because of the violence—guns are used, people get hurt and killed and experimented on— but still, keep descriptions more or less PG. Keep the gore set on low, don't describe blood gushing—you get the idea.

-This is not typically a romance Rp but of course it happens. Just use the "Skip" button aptly. Nothing that you wouldn't see in a PG movie.



Some more rules and guidelines—
-If you're caught by the RK, you could be either killed or taken to a base to be experimented on. The RK will perform tests on you until you're killed or you escape. Please try to keep this marginally realistic—these are high-security bases equipped to deal with shifters. You can't escape the night you're brought in. You just can't.

-This is the future. We love new advancements. But if you want to introduce a new crazy powerful weapon or crazy effective drug, please run it by us veterans first.

-Following is how we deal with clothes on shifters. In the 1980s, a bracelet was developed that could absorb up to a few pounds of clothing and pocket contents and re-size itself appropriately, automatically triggered by a shift. By 2026, it has become a large chip that can be surgically implanted into a shifter's neck, just beneath the outer layer of skin, and can hold around 7-8 kilos [so, absolutely no more than 18 pounds, but normally only about 15]—so if you're a shifter soldier, get good at hiding your weapons! Unless there are complications, the only symptoms would be occasional itchiness and a strange pulling discomfort in the chipped area. And it is inadvisable for chipped shifters to change into animals with no neck or equivalent. NOT EVERY CHARACTER WILL HAVE ONE. If your shifter character is a member of the WK or RK, (s)he will; it's a given. If your shifter character is able to get in contact with the WK or RK and pay about eight thousand euro per chip and a couple hundred for the surgery itself, then (s)he could conceivably have it. However, shifters in not as financially stable situations will probably not have them, and shifter children younger than five will not. Newly-turned shifters who have not had the chance to get one obviously won't have one either.

-Notes on the Bases: A WK or RK base is a large building in a remote, closed-to-and-secret-from-the-public place where members go to train, be trained, hold meetings, exchange updates, coordinate trips, plan missions, etc. Some even live there, but that is not required. They aren't conventional military bases; they're also centers for the espionage division and analyst work and scientific experiments. We don't have a specific number of bases and we don't want to get that restrictive, but there are several. An RK base, as stated before, is—in addition to all aforementioned functions—where shifter prisoners [NOT war prisoners; just shifters captured off the street by the RK] are taken to be locked up and experimented on. Bases are, also as mentioned before, very high-security. This means there is a guarded wall along the perimeter of the property and a fair stretch of land between that and the actual building. One does not simply walk into a base.

Some notes on the joining form (you definitely want to read this one)—

For the personality, no "You'll see"s. Write out a description, even a brief one. The character can be pretty much any age, but if (s)he became a shifter by injection, we draw the line at 75, since this formula has only been around for so long.

If your character was bitten or injected, please make a note of when that happened, especially if (s)he was older than about 25, so we will be able to picture how old (s)he ought to look.

Keep in mind military regulations of appearance when deciding on your character's looks if (s)he is a soldier of the WK/RK. Y'know, no body piercings or giant tattoos or unnatural hair colors, stuff like that. Hair length regulations are laxer here than in the real life military but just barely. So guys can have short beards and their hair can go very slightly over their foreheads, but that's about it.

The Rp [usually] takes place in and around Germany, and most characters will have been born there, though that's not a requirement.

"Allegiance" is simply referring to which side your character is on morally. If neither WK nor RK, put "ignorant" or "apathetic." if you want to indicate that they're employed by either organization, please do so under "Past" or "Other."

The character's past can be as simple or complex as you want, just be descriptive and realistic.

Other helpful things to consider including somewhere in the form:

• whether your shifter character has a clothes chip (if not part of WK or RK, there needs to be a good reason for having one)
  
• languages spoken
• occupation (some big ones in the WK/RK are soldier, guard, doctor, nurse, scientist, analyst, trainer, etc.)

Looks- Schwarz's hair is very black and very straight, and goes to her shoulders, at which point it abruptly stops. No bangs, slight widow's peak, and her hair is almost always at least partially pinned up. Her eyes are blue, and guarded. She has an old look about her not generally achieved by shifters so young. She's quite tall—about 5"11'—and thin, but fit. It's obvious she works out. Her arms and back are covered with faded red burn scars.
Personality- She's intelligent and resourceful. She's very work-oriented, and totally dedicated to her cause. She can rarely be found dressed less than professionally [commonly with the exception of trainers, for easy movement], since she spends the vast majority of her time working. Aside from that, Schwarz is... damaged. But she's stronger for having been hurt. She knows exactly what she's doing, she won't take nonsense from anyone, and she's much stronger in the areas of war and commanding than of friendliness and comfort. Emotion doesn't factor into things nearly as much as it used to. She works efficiently, any taste for the dramatic or unnecessary excitement long since faded away. She is slow to trust and has few friends, but sometimes you can tell that there's still a heart buried under all that austerity.

Her American beginnings, hidden by her perfect grasp on the German language and Berlin accent and unwillingess to speak of anything personal, are not common knowledge. There was a time she went undercover in the RK as a linguist called Yvonne Simon for about two years, which is when she formed a bond with Lillian Valentine. At the age of 26, after Gwendolyn Möer's death, Diana became the guardian figure of her son, Christoph. She's doing her best to raise him well, but it is honestly harder for her than commanding an army. As of mid-2026, she and Christoph are living in a one-story house in Svydivok, Ukraine.

Personality- Pretty serious. Doesn't smile a lot, nor does he like to waste words. He cares, he's just bad at showing it. Felix is a man with a lot going on in his own head that he needs to figure out, but he doesn't have the first idea how. He's sensitive, much preferring to read rather than fight, which was his downfall as he was growing up, as he was relentlessly picked on by his big brother, and learned to keep to himself lest he say or do anything that may incite ridicule. But he is, at his core, a protector—leading him to take the brunt of his brother's bullying if it meant sparing his little sister—which is the reason that today he is a soldier.

Personality- Polite, logical, and infinitely patient. He follows rules, and is usually rather businesslike. But ultimately, he listens to his heart before his head. He's loyal, and selfless to a fault. A team player, very good at working with people, though he's an introvert. He's also great with kids and has been a sitter on numerous occasions. All around a very decent man.

Personality- She can be quite charming when she wants to be, and usually that does work to her advantage, so that's how most people see her. She is respectful where respect is due and is always very businesslike, but cross her and she will put you in your place without twitching an eye. She knows where she stands and she's not budging for anyone. She lives for the RK and the adrenaline rush she gets while working in the field, and if there's anything she'll pour her whole heart and soul into, it's a mission. But outside the field, she is emotionally stagnant and intensely uncaring. Manipulative and cold, she is everything a spy needs to be.

Personality- She doesn't have a ton of friends, but she is very loyal to the few she does have. She can sometimes be sarcastic, but she is not bitter because of her blindness. She does hate being patronized or thought helpless, though she doesn't come across the problem a lot. She can be pretty fun, but never to the point of recklessness; she finds that it's best to err on the side of caution. She's intelligent and compassionate as well, but you probably wouldn't be able to tell until you're alone in a room with her.

Looks- Daniel was bitten when he was 26, so he looks 26, plus some worry lines. Dark brown hair in a side part style and hazel eyes, typically with dark shadows under them. Slight tan. Average height and build. Has a long scar running from his chest to his belly button that nobody ever sees.
Personality- The first thing you notice about Daniel is that he's very polite. In fact, he follows social norms to such a T that he might initially come off as boring. But this, at this point, is no more than a shield to hide what he has to. He is haunted by what happened to him when the RK captured him, to the point where it has corroded most of his personality. He saw a psychiatrist for about six months at the WK base but has not received any help since then. It's all he can do just to hold himself together. He is incredibly cautious and enforces strict rules for his daughter Anja, though it doesn't quite cross over into paranoia because his caution is, in fact, justified. He just wants to live in peace, under the radar, and keep Anja safe. At his core is an overwhelming love for her.

Past- Lived a normal life, installing and repairing power lines, until the day he and his wife were taking a walk with their infant daughter and happened to be in the vicinity of a sudden brawl between two shifters. Mrs. Fischer was killed and Daniel was scratched. Some six years later he was found, imprisoned, and experimented on by the RK, leaving his young daughter in the dark. He was, however, saved by a full-scale prison break coordinated by Nikolai Kamarov in a matter of weeks. Three years later, he and his daughter are living in witness protection in Dublin. Daniel is going by the name Donald Winters.

Personality- A very happy kid, always ready to laugh and play, but also very sensible, due to her father's influence. She doesn't like all his rules and indeed doesn't understand most of them but she knows there are reasons for them and does her best to follow them. She's loud when she can be, but knows when to be quiet. She loves animals, especially her Glen of Imaal Terrier, Dinsmore.

Looks- Nearly straight jet black hair that almost gets in his grey-blue eyes. Average height, a bit pale. A little on the gangly side.
Personality- He's managed to retain most of his pre-shifter personality, though he normally absolutely will not talk about his experiences. He's fun-loving and likeable, though a bit averse to responsibility. At the same time, he's not a big-time rule-breaker and will do the work he's given without complaint. He's more of a talker than a listener, though he's working on getting better at the latter. He likes to meet new and interesting people.

Past- His father left his mother before he was even born. His mother worked hard and loved him, but he was restless and dissatisfied with his life as it was. When he was sixteen he volunteered to be a subject for a test at the RedKingdom. After the injection he realized that being a shifter wasn't all it was cracked up to be. He broke off contact with the RK and worked at the WhiteKingdom base in Potsdam until it was destroyed, after which he was relocated to the base outside Hull, England.
Other- He works odd jobs at the WK and has no official title. This gives him a wide-ranging skill set but also means that he is used to constant change and not to commitment.

Personality- Archer is a serious man. Both his training for the military and his time captured by the RK forced any good humor out of the man. Personality- Sabel is quiet. Some professionals would say "selective mutism" levels of quiet. Personality- While normally a bubbly and excitable person, some who don't know who would call her childish, that all sort of changed after she was bitten and then even more drastically when she was caught by the RedKingdom. Now she's very quiet, reserved, keeps to herself and when she does talk she's very soft-spoken.
