"Sure, why not?" Ari said with a shrug. "Plus it might be funny listening to him sputter and whatnot." He leaned over to check out the photo. "Huh," he said as he punched in the number, then brought it to his ear. "The key is to talk fast and let him draw his own conclusions," he said. "Hi, Mr. Rhodes, is it? Yeah - so in case you didn't know, Everton High got burned down and we're suspecting arson. See, we found a lighter inside with your name on it - "
He paused, the corner of his mouth lifting a tiny bit at the sputtering, and then looked up at Simon. "Oh, sorry, should I put it on speakerphone?" he said, covering the mouthpiece, before uncovering it to say, "Actually, Mr. Rhodes, I wanted to ask where your son was last night." He wore an amused look on his face. "He's freaking out," he mouthed to Simon, clearly enjoying the whole thing.

Simon rolled his eyes, before leaning over to Ari and grabbing the phone, putting it onto speaker so he could hear, but remained silent, head tipped slightly to one side. He could tell that Ari was clearly enjoying the conversation, but for Simon, it was a bit concerning for the curly haired boy. What if we got the wrong person? He wondered with a slight frown, tuning out the conversation momentarily, before giving the phone back to the boy. He shifted to his left side, wincing in pain momentarily.

Rhodes sounded miffed. "Well, if you must know, I didn't see Alex come home last night. I doubt he came home at all."
Ari's gaze darted to Simon. "Do you know where he was?" He noticed the wince and frowned.
A moment of silence. "I'm afraid not." His voice was tight, then resigned. "Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised to find Alex making trouble again. I just didn't expect it to go this far."
Ari's eyes widened. Wow, harsh. Reminded him of his mother. "Okay, thanks, Mr. Rhodes. I don't think we have any other questions, do we?" he said, giving Simon a questioning glance.

"Thank you for your time, it was a big help, bye," Ari concluded, punching the End Call button. Cool. Hopefully Rhodes wouldn't get too suspicious and try to track his number to see who it was, seeing how Ari never said anything about being the police or the fire department or anything. In his experience, the brain liked to fill in the gaps itself, which was useful when Ari needed to omit information.
"Well," Ari said. "I think we found our number one suspect." His thumb began moving again. "I think the police will be grateful if we send a little anonymous tip - they probably found the lighter, after all. They can piece it together and do what they have to do."
There was a small bit of satisfaction in him from this whole thing. Not much, but at least it's there. "That was fun," he said.

"Should we tip them? I mean, yeah, Alex is our number one suspect right now, but what if, he like, brought it to school and it dropped out of his bag and some other kid used it? " Simon asked, clearly hesitant on calling the police. He didn't want to get involved in anything that had to do with the authorities. He winced again, pain coming from his foot, but he ignored it for now, keeping his focus on the boy next to him. "Wait- fun? How was that Fun?"

((Simon nooo our plaaan))
Ari frowned. "If some other kid used it then the only thing we have to find the actual person is a stranger's fingerprint on that lighter. Which the police can find. Though, if they don't, might as well save them the time tracing it back to the kid. I mean, troublemaker? No alibi? Too likely." From here Ari would track down the kid and get their side of the story, but Ari was finding the investigation boring now. He was tired - he felt like going back home and curling up in bed. He wanted to tie the whole thing up so that there wouldn't be that nagging feeling of incompletion when he stopped.
Oh yeah. Other people's definitions of fun probably didn't match his. He shrugged. "Entering a restricted crime scene slash dangerous zone of ashes and crumbling building? Figuring out the culprit? Detective stuff, how can it not be fun?" He pressed CALL on his phone. "Besides, why did you keep following along if you weren't enjoying yourself?" he said.
((And with the tip the tragic events we planned so long ago commence))

"I suppose you're right... I just don't want to get anyone in trouble who might actually be innocent. But they will scan for prints, so it should be okay..." He said, although the doubt was clear in his voice. He closed his eyes tightly, the pain in his foot coming back in full force. Its not real, Simon, ignore it. He told himself, pulling a leg up to his bed, letting out a deep breath as he layed sprawled on the bed. "I kept following to make sure you didn't get yourself in trouble." He responded immediately, before realizing what he said. He groaned inwardly, realizing that he must sound like a total creep- the two barely knew each other, why should he care about some random stranger? The answer being he had the tendency to worry about everyone, but that was besides the point.

"Psh, why would you care if I got in trouble or not," Ari said, more self-deprecating than anything else. His gaze watched Simon's face, his eyes narrowing at the clear look of pain scrawled across it. "Seriously are you okay - oh, yeah, sorry, I wanted to call in a tip? It's about that school burning down. Tips are a thing, right?" He took a minute simply to tell the police to keep an eye out for Alex Rhodes - it was the most he could say without revealing that he knew about the lighter. Then he hung up and put it down. "Seriously, are you okay."

"I dunno, cause I hate to see people getting into trouble," He responded quickly, before sitting up on his elbows, listening quietly as Ari gave the tip, the pain subsiding slowly where is foot should have been. "Tips are a thing- why'd you ask that, they do it on those dateline shows all the time." He added, avoiding the question of whether he was alright- if he brushed it off it would be clear he was lying and he didn't exactly want to explain what was going on so he opted to avoid the question, looking absentmindedly at his bright orange socks he was wearing. (I actually am already really loving these twos relationship )

((same))
Ari raised his eyebrows. "Got a big heart, huh?" he said. "Must be painful." He then shrugged. "Officer was like super grumpy," he said. "Acted like people don't call in except to perform prank calls." He didn't miss that Simon was avoiding his question.
"Did you trip or something in the burnt building and I didn't notice?" he said quietly. His stomach twisted - he would hate it if someone got hurt because they stupidly tried to make sure he didn't get into trouble. "Or is it a chronic pain thing? If it is and you don't want to talk about it I'll shut up."

"I'm not surprised- he's probably got a ton of calls like that, this is, like, the best way to exact revenge on someone. Hate the kid thats bullied you for the past three years? Call 'im in and he'll get a scare." He added with a smirk, prodding him with his right foot jokingly. "Yeah, totally painful," Before frowning, surprised at the worry. He must think that I must have gotten hurt exploring. He thought with a pang, feeling admittedly guilty for making someone worry. "its ah-" He hesitated, unsure how to really explain it. "Its just something that happens every now and then, not cause of our... exploring." He explained, using the word "exploring" for a lack of a better term.

Ari blinked down at where Simon prodded him, then looked back up. "Investigating," he couldn't help but correct. "And... oh." A pause. "Does it hurt badly?"

((gotta get to sleep, see u tomorrow!))
Ari shrugged. "Fair." He took a moment to respond to Simon's admittance that he was used to the pain. "Ah," he said finally. "I see." He turned his phone around in his hands, feeling awkward when no words were on his tongue. "Well," he said. "Thanks for... letting me into your house, I guess. If you need me to leave now..."

(Night! Get some rest!) "Oh- you don't go if you have to, I mean, you're ah- welcome to stay. I mean- I wouldn't want to kick you out after calling the cops and stuff- I could make you food or, like, I don't know. Ah, unless you have to leave," He said quickly, embarrassed at how quickly their interaction had turned awkward. Dangit, Simon. This is why you don't have friends. ( @borderline вlue вlood aaaand the plot has been set in motion with Alexs father ^^)

"Uhhhhh," Ari said. "Depends on what you have. Like, nowadays I never say no to a good soup. Or cake." He trotted off after Simon, slipping his phone into his pocket.

"Nah, I just don't eat beef," Ari said. "Turkey soup sounds good." He paused for a minute to ponder if he should offer help. Most likely he's just going to mope around the kitchen with absolutely zero energy - but Simon offered food. He felt like he should be polite, if just for him. "Do you need help or anything?"

"I mean, you could peel the potatoes and carrots, if you want, but I gotta be honest I'm not the best with cooking with others, hope ya don't mind," He responded sheepishly, before opening a door to a large kitchen. He paused infront of a wood pained cabinet, and he pulled it open, revealing a fridge. He paused, finger to his chin thoughtfully, before pulling out some shredded turkey, turkey gravy, carrots, celery, and peas. He put them on the counter, before grabbing a knife and a peeler. "Here, start with the carrots. Just peel 'em. " He said over his shoulder before grabbing a bag of potatoes and a slow cooker.

Ari perked up a little. "Peeling's cool," he said, shuffling into the kitchen and grabbing a peeler. The repetitive movement was relaxing, with a bit of satisfaction when a carrot's fully peeled. "And yeah, I get it, I'm not one to work well with others either. Usually. Generally."

"Well, before I was a lot meaner," Ari informed Simon solemnly. "And usually people can't really stand me. Though, people don't really like me now either, so... it's like, you know, I do crazy things sometimes and not many people will go along with it." He shrugged. "And, if people are stupid, I'm not going to waste my time with them. And a lot of people are stupid." He lowered his eyes. "Not - not you, though." More of a voice of reason than anything.

((sorry i disappeared the other day, got caught up in something and i just let it slip by >.<))
Ari blinked. Not a bad thing. "My stepsister says I'm going to get myself killed one day. Or worse, arrested and thrown in jail with a life sentence," he said, watching Simon cook as he leaned against the counter. "She says even though I've got a brain I don't have a good head on my shoulders. Which sounds funny but makes sense, I have to admit." He scuffed his foot against the floor. Suddenly he had the urge to tell Simon more about his stepsister, how annoying she can be, how wretched it made him feel when he could just sense her trying and he'll just be a stubborn ass whining and sulking and talking about death all the time because there's that feeling that he just can't help it.
He wondered if it would be worth it. "We used to hate each other, but now Lindy's trying to look out for me and I hate it." I hate that she's wasting her time.
