( i relate (': )
Oliver flicked his gaze over the duo with something of an amused smile, before lowering his head to pick at his own food. He wasn't sure if the Americans would like the Norwegian options, so he'd done a little extra...it had been hard on the pocket, but considering he was working in the evening the next day, it would be fine.
"Lutefisk is weird," he told them lightly, "but it's there if you wanna try it."
Maja hadn't left very much lutefisk for anyone else, but that was more because she wasn't that fond of much else rather than selfishness.

"Judas," she muttered under her breath, punching him before heading to the food area. "And anyways, that was a bear hug from a stranger! Not a hug from a friend," she hissed to him, keeping in step with the boy, feeling a bit bad for being so upset at the friendly kid. It just made her uncomfortable, she couldn't change that. She grabbed her own plate, putting on a little bit from each dish, not taking any drinks, disliking the taste of alchohol. Was she picky? Yes, and she wasn't shy about it. She only picked a bit out of everything to be polite in hopes she actually found something she liked. She nodded, picking at the Norwegian dish curiously, telling herself she would eat it even if she didn't like it. (Same Blue XD)

( the prosecco returns clink clink )
Alex waved Tori off vaguely. Frankly, he wasn't going to be able to empathise with Tori; he wasn't the one who had to deal with. It was probably one of those things that seemed rather amusing to anyone who didn't actually have to go through it. "Weird is good," Alex replied to Oliver's comment. He was not a picky eater - quite the opposite, in fact - and he loaded his own plate with a fair amount of everything there, not one to be put off in the slightest by the unfamiliar Norwegian food, and he grabbed a beer for himself.

( im staying sober today bc ive been drunk for two days ?? unacceptable. even greasy food couldnt sober me so im just. not drinking rn (we're almost out of alc anyway) )
"Lutefisk has a jelly-like texture," Oliver said, taking a sip from his glass of wine and hiding his smile with it. "But it's not entirely bad."
"You're damn right," Maja chirped from where she sat, cross-legged, eating a plate that was loaded with lutefisk and some vegetables. "It's better than your lamb, or whatever."
Eva rolled her eyes upwards, as if this was a common argument in their household. It was, to be honest.

(Share? clink clink I'm loving the literal polar opposites the two are. Sorry 'bout that Skul) She bit into one of the Norwegian foods- the one that started with an "L" and was pleasantly surprised- it tasted good. Better than what she expected, finishing off the portion she got and eyed Alex's for a moment, wondering if he noticed if a little bit of it was missing. "Its really good," She told Oliver with a grin, relieved that the food was good and something edible. She still stayed near Alex, not wanting to make the mistake of being left alone twice, still eyeing his food, waiting for the perfect moment to steal some off of his plate. He owed her after all, right? And there was definitely not enough of that for seconds, if everyone tried a little bit of it.

Alex glanced over to Maja with a light smile when she spoke. "It really is," Alex agreed after he'd started, glancing up to Oliver. "It all is, whatever Maja syays. A bit weird, okay, but, like, weird in a good way? You're a good cook. Y'know, your friendship is becoming more and more valuable the more we get to know you... Any more secret talents?" Alex's culinary abilities pretty much ended at the ability to operate a toaster, so maybe he was easily impressed? But he did know when he was eating good food.

"Oh," Oliver blinked owlishly before he laughed softly, sitting back on his heels and taking a moment to pick apart the lamb on his plate and eat it. He tilted his head back and considered the question, swallowing before he answered. "I'm a pretty decent mechanic and I can do the splits."
Two of his most impressive talents. He could feel his sister smirking at him but pointedly ignored it.

"For real?" Alex's eyebrows raised. "I demand a post-dinner splits demonstration," he grinned mischievously. "A- He-ey!" he whined, only catching Tori a half-second too late, but he hit her fork away with his own in protest anyway. Still, he couldn't keep the smile from his face. "This is why you should assume all food is good," he scolded her. "Then you wouldn't have to resort to common thievery." He pouted at her childishly, but really it was a credit to Oliver's cooking though; Tori's appetite was less lenient than his.

"Most foods are nasty, though," she complained, nibbling on one of the American foods. She was quite the opposite of Alex, if she didn't like something she wouldn't eat it, so her actually eating what was on her plate was a surprise. She perked up at Olivers mention of being able to do the splits, "the splits? You're going to need to show us," she told him, grinning. She never met anyone outside of cheerleaders or gymnasts who could do splits.

"Post-dinner splits demonstration will be shown," he promised with a quiet laugh, shaking his head at their reactions. Oliver's gaze flicked between the two and he ducked his head a little, glad that they seemed to like the food. Cooking for his family meant that his skills were sharpened - plus, he'd been taught by his grandma! Who didn't become a good cook when being taught by a good one?
He finished what was on his plate and lightly set the empty plate on the table, content with what he'd eaten.
"Do either of you two have any special talents?" he raised a single eyebrow in typical Oliver fashion.

Tori grinned, excited about seeing this special talent, pausing at his question. She shrugged, "I dunno. I'm a decent baker, I guess," she responded thoughtfully. She had been baking since she was six, it was one of her favorite things to do. There was always some type of baked food in her house or something she brought to school, she tried out new recipes at least once a week. She also knew how to cuss people out in a few different languages, but she didn't count that as a talent. She took a bite of something cheesy, she thought it was mac n cheese but wasn't a hundred percent sure. She chewed thoughtfully, shrugging, "I mean that's really it for me. Not too talented. I mean, I can bs a three page paper in an hour and get a good grade on it but I learned that in my AP English class,"

"You're better than decent," Alex nudged Tori with his elbow. Again, maybe he wasn't the best judge. But hey, the sentiment was nice. "Hmmm, talents?" he sighed thoughtfully, tipping his head to the ceiling for a moment as he thought. "Does picking a fight with inanimate objects count? Kidding. I have perfect pitch - but it's not like it's useful really," he added quickly, sounding almost sheepish. "Uh, I used to sing. In middle school. But not anymore. I played soccer at the start of high school, but, uh, not any more. I wasn't amazing or anything, just... pretty good, I guess? That's about it, I think. OOh, my dad taught me how to do that thing where you can start a fire in a forest without any matches or whatever. I wonder if I could still do that?" he mused aloud. It wasn't like he really had anything he was super into any more. Some people had those really obvious talents, but nothing jumped out as obvious to him.

Oliver drained his wine of glass and nodded as he listened to both of them, lips twitching with amusement at Alex's words. He exhaled softly and leaned back, putting one hand behind himself to lean back, stretching one leg out while the other drew up slightly.
"Baking is cool," he said lightly, "and so is having perfect pitch," he laughed softly. "That takes skill," he huffed softly and glanced up as he watched Maja pester Eva for the rest of the lutefisk, eyebrows pulling down slightly. Then, he focused his attention back on his friends. "Do you two speak any languages besides English?"

"Perfect pitch is something that not a lot of people have," Tori pointed out, nudging him back, glancing back at Oliver. "He is wicked talented, and it could come to use one day. Who knows, you might become a thief and sing your victims to sleep," Tori teased, a glimmer in her eyes, catching Olivers question, but didn't answer his question, he already knew what she could speak, the question was probably aimed at Alex more than her. She ran a hand through her hair, a thoughtful expression on her face, her hand not leaving the back of her neck.

Alex shook his head. "Not me. My mom's Greek - Alex is actually short for Alexis - but anyway, uh, my dad's... he's a 'speak English in America' kind of guy?" Alex pulled a face, obviously sugaring his words. Not a common thing for him, but Whoever he was in the company of, speaking against their father was one of those things that just wasn't done in his family. "So she doesn't speak it to us at home. I know about as much as I know in ASL," he explained. "Maybe I should pick up my ASL education again?" he looked over to Tori, obviously joking. It's probably for the best to know and accept defeat in some situations.

"Singing lullabies and stealing things," Oliver laughed softly, ducking his head as he did so. "Of course. But...Alexis?" he raised both of his eyebrows, this time, "I didn't expect that. I thought maybe you were just plain 'Alex' or...Alexander, even," he smiled and tilted his head back. "Your father would hate me, then. In this house, when we don't have guests, it's Mandarin or Norwegian, no English."
He was only partially lying. Mandarin was for his mother - Eva and Maja didn't speak it, and his father only had a rough grasp on it.
If the sisters noticed that he'd been talking about that, however, they didn't mention it, currently immersed in their own conversation in Norwegian Sign Language.
"I'm gonna have to pick up ASL at some point," Oliver huffed, "Eva's learning more and more of it, and since she can only communicate through it I gotta learn."

"I'm just full of hidden secrets," Alex grinned to Oliver. "Anyway, nobody calls me that except my birth certificate. I didn't even shorten it myself. My dad probably thinks it's bad enough that all his kids have to look half-Greek, heaven forbid I kept a name even remotely foreign. I dunno. It's easier to just not think about whatever goes through his mind," Alex rolled his eyes. "Anyway, he doesn't like very many people. I think it's cool that you speak other languages. Very cosmopolitan. Maybe I'll take you up on the Spanish offer. I'd have to smuggle Spanish books through the windows," he smiled at Tori, making light of it only because it was a bit of a depressing thing otherwise, especially for someone like Alex with wanderlust in his head.

"I'm gonna call you Alexis," honestly, he looked vaguely amused - not at the name, but at the possibility of lowkey rebelling against a man who sounded almost as bad as his own father. Oliver tilted his head slightly to look at Tori, and then looked back to Alex. They definitely seemed to be good friends; it reminded him of how he had interacted with Jonas, for the longest time. "Cosmopolitan," he repeated. "No. Just biracial."
He probably didn't know what cosmopolitan meant.

"Its not like I haven't smuggled things through your window before," she shot back, offering him a smile back. Although she never stayed long in his room she had snuck things- ranging from homework assignments to coffee- through his window many a time. It wasn't as hard as people thought, didn't take much muscle, just enough brains to make the climb easy. She nodded at Olivers comment, it did make him biracial, not cosmopolitan, but didn't say much. She knew nothing about her family, her mother being disowned from hers and her father being adopted, so she hadn't the slightest clue where they came from- just that her grandparents moved to the states when her mother was quite young, but from where she didn't know. Her mother wouldn't tell her, any time she asked things got... messy. She shook herself, realizing she wasn't paying attention, only picking up that Oliver needed to learn ASL."I could teach you," she offered.

"That would be nice," Oliver smiled faintly. "I could teach you something else in return - maybe not Norwegian," he'd straight-up admit that he was selfish enough to need a private language for his family and his lingering hope for his friends talking to him, "but I could teach you Chinese. Mandarin. I'm pretty good with my brushstrokes."

(Ok, take your time blue <3 <3) "That would be great, I've always wanted to learn Mandarin," She said in an almost thoughtful voice, her gaze sharpening onto Oliver, now attentive. It would be useful, knowing how to read and speak it, it would look good on resumes and allow her to travel further, it would allow her to not be confined to Spanish and English speaking countries, and she wanted that.

"It's going to be a hard switch," Oliver warned her lightly, "but it'll be good. A lot of people speak it, honestly," he smiled faintly, "I think it's the world's first most spoken language? If someone I met in a city didn't speak English, there was a surprisingly high chance of them speaking Mandarin. That said, though, nearly everyone in Norway speaks English. But yeah," he blinked. "I can teach you."

"Yeah, thats what I heard. It's a totally different system of speech and writing, but once I get a handle on it it'll be useful to know." She responded firmly, signing as she spoke, deciding that if she was going to teach she might as well start now. "Thank you," She added quickly, wanting him to know that his offer was, in fact, incredibly welcomed. She absolutely loved learning new languages, she had become obsessed with Spanish until she had mastered it, and she wanted to learn more.

"Yeah, if you mess up even a little on pronunciation or a brushstroke, then you might insult someone. You should be fine, considering you use sign language," Oliver watched Tori's hands, and amused smile gracing his features. He was used to Maja switching between Norwegian and Norwegian Sign Language or doing both, and Eva only spoke in Norwegian Sign Language - so this was fine.
