( sorry i needed to smoke a heckuva lot and drink a lot merry chrysler lol )
"Ah, thank you," Oliver smiled, "it's...small, I guess, but it's home."
His three younger sisters shared with each-other and Astrid shared with his mother, which meant he slept on the futon - but he wouldn't mention that. Not when Eva sat quite contently on said futon, eyes wide and attentive as she watched the other girl with some curiousity.
'Would be nice', the young girl signed back.
When the second knock came to Oliver's door, he got up and opened it, smiling warmly at Alex.
"Hallo," he greeted, "come in. I hope it's not impolite for me to ask you to take your shoes off."

(Lol thats okay.) 'good,' She responded with a smile, excited to be able to actually teach someone who would be able to learn Sign. She just hoped that she would be a decent teacher, trying to teach Alex was a complete and utter disaster, the only thing him being able to remember his name... Maybe. She couldn't help but wonder where his mother was, but decided not to ask, given that she was sick enough for them to move out of the country. She might be resting for the day.
When the doorbell rang she jumped up, following Oliver to the door, lurking behind him with a cheshire cat like grin on her face. "Hey, Alex!" She said cheerily, dashing back into the living room and grabbing his present out of the bag, waiting for Oliver to exchange gifts before she did, excited. She couldn't believe that they might all have an actually decent Christmas Eve for once.

( sorry for smolness watching it's a wonderful life *u* )
Grinning, Alex saluted Tori in getting. "Course not," he replied to Oliver, and slid his shoes off at the door. "Thanks for having us," he added, his voice warm and genuine, and you knew he really was grateful simply because he remembered to say it. Christmas Eve had some promise this year.

( its ok im small posting because im sobering the hell up my dudes. my bros. my loves. )
"Silje har en kjæreste!" Maja hummed, tilting her head back to look at the newcomer. "Aw, du har god smak. Det må være genetisk."
"Vær stille, djevelen barn," Oliver flicked some wrapping paper towards her before picking up the wrapped giftcard he'd gotten for Alex and passing it to him as he shut the door lightly. "Snakk engelsk! Disse to ikke vet norsk."
'Drama!' Eva signed in English, a smile present upon her face as she beat Maja at whatever game they were playing. She was quick to switch to Norwegian, however. 'Oliver, du får aldri venner på!'
"Bullying," Oliver hummed, but stepped past his siblings. "I'll be back in a moment, Alex, Tori. I just need to check on a few things."
His mother and lunch.
"Maja speaks flawless English," he pointed at the brunette, "reject her attempts to teach you Norwegian, because she has a filthy mouth."

( get ur act together skul u need to do drynuary m'love c8 )
Alex turned his confused gaze back to Tori, taking silent solace with the only other person there who had no idea what they were hearing. He didn't really get the chance to get a (second) thanks in to Oliver, so he tried to convey the feeling with a nod in between the Norwegian spoken. "Well, I think I know what 'Oliver' means," he shrugged with a smile, before turning to Oliver's sisters and connecting the dots in his mind. Maja was pointed out to him, and the sister using sign had to be Eva, if he was remembering correctly. "Oh my god," Alex grinned to Maja with bright eyes. "Please teach us Norwegian." Hands very much now full, he turned quickly back to Tori and held out his obviously book-shaped gift from him to her. "For you, friend. To another year of... eh, whatever. Happy Christmas."

(Lol what are they saying??) She watched the siblings go back and forth at each other, the only time she knew what was going on was when Eva signed to her once. She frowned slightly, but nodded when Oliver got up, feeling a bit left out of the conversation. She shifted slightly, trying not to feel uncomfortable. She accepted Alexis book, laughing a little before giving him his oddly shaped book. She managed a mischevious grin, before shooting back, "what if I want to learn naughty words in Norwegian?" She asked, plopping onto the futon, putting her cheek to her hand as she watched him leave. She liked his sisters, they where a ton of fun so far, and she couldn't wait for dinner. She flicked her gaze over to Alex, wondering if he was as curious as she was.

( @ willow: atm tori & alex are at oliver's for xmas eve !! if you want maybe ur charater got invited ?? oliver is a kind, warm being
@ blue: i have no idea what drynuary means
@ sweet: kjæreste is a gender-neutral term for bf/gf/significant other (mostly used) so maja asked if oliver (deadname 'silje') had a bf and told him he had good taste & that it must be genetic oliver told her off by telling her to be quiet & then he called her a devil child, n then told them to speak english bc the guests didnt speak norwegian eva is surprised that oliver actually has friends bc he formed a social group around one person back in norway )
Maja pointed at Alex as she took a sip of whatever Oliver had been drinking, wrinkling her nose at whatever it was.
"Okay, well," she began, her English still very light and her accent more English than Scandinavian, "'hva faen' means 'what the hell', but we use it as your English 'what the f**k', right? Dra til helvete means 'go to hell'. That's all you need to know, really, because everything else is filthy."
She seemed to be quite relaxed around her brother's friends, despite the age gap.
"You two seem pretty chill," she mused, "Silje's old friends had no chill."
Eva smiled faintly and crossed her legs. 'Bad words are no good,' she managed to sign, though roughly, in ASL.

'You know them,' Tori responded in rough Norwegian, giving her a small smilebefore returning her attention to Maja, watching her explain the pronunciation of the curses. "I know what your going to be saying, Alex," she called out jestingly, before signing to Eva, "They say what?" In Norwegian, wanting to know what Maja was asking Oliver, considering she called it Drama. She was sitting criss crossed on the futon, leaning forward almost cat like, curious as to what was going on.

i'm basically just always leaving a google translate tab open at this point lol I know some like ~ultra basic~ swedish so there's like two words i recognise that just happen to be the same ha
also damnn the deadnaming )
"Excellent!" Alex proclaimed, after testing out these newly-learnt phrases under his breath and firing Maja and enthusiastic thumbs up. "I know everything I've ever needed in Norwegian now. Knowledge is power. Oh, and we have plenty of chill. Not much else, mind, but we got chill. That's why it never really snows here, y'know," he grinned teasingly. "See, Norway uses up it's chill in the snow and all that. Good thing you moved here while you did, a few more years and you too would have ended up boring," he explained with all mock seriousness, before concluding (ever so patriotically), "America, yo."

maja doesnt accept him. she loves him but she wont accept him )
"America, yo," Maja repeated bluntly. "Nah. Just Silje's friends. You know, like," she made a gesture. "Trying to get used to her having friends that aren't obsessed with being Russ, y'know? Like, we lived in Kristiansund so," she paused and stuck her tongue out as she got to a particularly hard part of the game, "so we weren't as obsessed with Russ buses as Oslo kids are, but all her friends were from Oslo and she'd take the train up and. Well. No chill? But you two seem pretty chill, it's nice."
Eva opened her mouth and smiled in what was definitely a laugh, though it was silent, and she moved to sit next to Tori on the futon. 'Maja asked Oliver if the boy was his boyfriend. Oliver called her a devil child,' she signed it in slow and steady Norwegian, in an attempt to make it more understandable.

((Oh neat! Though I can't imagine how Ari would get invited, the thought of someone a bit more soclal dragging him around to go Christmas caroling amuses me))
"Why am I here," Ari said flatly, staring up at the door as if it had personally offended him. Riandylan gave him a blinding smile. "To spread Christmas cheer, of course!" they signed cheerfully, their sheet music tucked under one arm. "...why." "It's fun!" they insisted before lifting up their sheet music and shaking it a bit to signal Ari to do the same. "I don't even celebrate Christmas," Ari whined under his breath as the kid bounded up to ring the doorbell. The wind whistled in his ears, causing him to grit his teeth and bury his hands deeper into his sweatshirt pocket. It's cold, it's windy, it's snowy, but this ridiculous child is still insistent upon going outside with the same enthusiasm as if they were going trick-or-treating. Even his vague fondness for some rich kid he's supposed to babysit when Lindy's not available wasn't enough to save Riandylan from his bitter scowls and glares. "Don't you have some friends to do this with?" he muttered, tensing as he heard the faint sound of the doorbell from within the house. He didn't get Ria's excitement. Two people has got to be the most boring choir to listen to. But, Riandylan was not that fond of reason. Or, rather, their reasoning that it's something fun to do (with Ari) and will make people happy at the same time was enough for them. Rindylan skipped back to his side, simply beaming up at him. Perhaps they liked him more because their partial deafness saved them from the more crude remarks he'd make under his breath, Ari mused. He nudged them as they waited for the inhabitants to open the door. "Can we go back after this? I'm freezing," he said when they turned their head. "Your fault for only wearing a sweatshirt." "I thought you'd get bored of this after the first house!" "What? No way! They gave me candy!" Ari groaned. "Maybe these people will give us hot chocolate," he grumbled, shivering. "Shh, shh! They're coming!"

After a rough conversation with his mother ('Chunhua, I need you', 'you need sleep'), Oliver had checked on dinner (which was still cooking), and so he was the one who had to sort out the intercom and then jog downstairs because it had been his bell pressed. When he opened the door to the apartment building, however, he raised an eyebrow.
"Uh, is this an American thing?" he asked slowly as his gaze flicked over the two, unsure of how to feel. They looked...fairly cold, and so he stepped aside. "Come in. It's too cold to be outside today."
Was he going to invite them in for hot chocolate and dinner? Absolutely. He was too gentle to not.

She frowned at Maja, most of the words not making sense to her whatsoever, confused at who "Silja" was, and the slang making everything more confusing for her. She brushed it off, just glad that she liked the two of them. She glanced over at Eva, thankful for the translator, and that she had studied up on some basic Norwegian sign before she came over. She nodded, before signing back 'he no like Alex?' Curious, wanting to confirm, glancing over at her friend again. She couldn't remember the sign for "who is" so she just signed "SILJI"with a questioning look on her face, unaware of the Carolers.

Skylar wasn't quite sure how she'd managed to end up at Oliver's apartment for Christmas. After all, she barely knew him. Yet there she was, sitting on his couch with her crutches propped up on the armrest beside her. She was half asleep, her belly warm and filled with hot chocolate. But then the doorbell rang, and she stirred, sitting up as Oliver ran to answer it. Better him than her, she guessed, as she settled back down. Maybe the new guest would come talk to her. That might be nice.

Once the door swung open, Riandylan gave Ari an entirely unnecessary kick in the shin and at once launched into an, well, off-key, but at least exuberant rendition of "We Wish You A Merry Christmas." Ari found it both charming and grating on his ears. But, he wasn't going to leave Ria in the dust so he sang the harmony technically well but almost as unenthusiastically as Ria was enthusiastic. The result was a confusing clash of voices, ending with Riandylan hopping up and spreading their arms to the sky, bellowing the last note. Ari was officially as cold outside as he was on the inside. It was amusing to Ari, really, how the only response to that chaos from this house was a "Is this an American thing?" He wanted to snort at that, but he was too DoneTM to express any emotion whatsoever. Really, he wasn't even embarrassed - he had already been done with life for too long to be affected by a stranger's feelings about him and Riandylan's awkward performance. When the other said "Come in" Ari wanted to shout for joy. "Thank ever holy person that ever existed," he said, sweeping into the house without a second thought. He heard Riandylan squeak out loud, "Really?!?", and felt a tiny bit of confusion and suspicion about getting invited in, but was more focused on the warmth melting into his bones than the possibility of getting himself and the kid trapped in some murderer's house and chopped into pieces. When he saw the other inhabitants of the building, he simply said, deadpan, "I need food."
((you are literally too kind oliver xD now Ari's going to go shamelessly raid your fridge))

This conversation still felt a bit like translating even when Maja was speaking English, and Alex paused, confused. "Wait, who's friends? What on earth is a Russ? Why do they have busses?" he questioned. And while he didn't know what sign conversation was going on between Tori and Eva (although he was rather impressed they they knew enough Norwegian and American Sign Language between them to seemingly communicate well enough to get by), it looked as though it was similarly involving questions.

( languages are good for me, i like them a lot i speak a scary amount of languageS BUT IM NOT FLUENT i need to put this disclaimer here i just know useful things like "can u pass the salt" and "move im gay" i can say move im gay in at least 10 languages )
'S-I-L-J-E is Oliver. Maja is disrespectful. S-I-L-J-E is not a name to be used, don't use it', Eva said this in a combination of Norwegian sign language and American sign language, aware that some words would be hard to understand with the faint shakiness to her hands. She smiled faintly.
"Silje's friends," Maja made a gesture, "you call her Oliver. Anyway. Russ is the last year of a Norwegian high schoolers thing, it's...hard to explain! But buses are a thing, it's hard to explain," she frowned thoughtfully. "Americans don't really understand and won't understand, but Silje went to parties on Russ busses a lot, despite being there for first and second year but never being a Russ. Russ is like, third year, last year. Before you go to university. There are cool pants? Silje's are somewhere because we moved just after she ordered all the stuff."
Oliver ran a hand through his hair, absently counting how many people. Skylar, Tori, Alex, the two new people. He smiled nervously at the two new people.
"Uh, hi. I'm Oliver. Food should be about twenty minutes, but feel free to make yourself at home," he looked almost apologetic. "Can I get you anything to drink?"

(Lmao "move I'm gay," love it. I'm pretty good at languages when I put my mind to it. I can read Spanish well , but I have a problem with speaking it, and learning ASL and hopefully one day Japanese.Ahhh poor Oliver. So many people. He is so interesting I want to learn all about him x3) Tori scrunched her face in confusion, 'bad name?' She asked, switching to ASL since it was only two words. This boy was getting more and more interesting by the millisecond, and she figured she could get more out of Eva than Oliver at the moment. She glanced over, recognizing Ari from around school, pausing from her signing momentarily, offering a friendly wave, before returning her attention to Eva, hoping for an answer.

Skylar was 90% sure that the kid who had walked in was one she recognized. A vague memory of Ari standing up to Kane after he'd tripped her entered her memory, making her feel warm inside. She didn't recognize the kid with him, though. Either way, she smiled at the pair and lifted her hand in a wave, though for obvious reasons she made no move to get off the couch to greet them.

((I really want to learn more languages, but alas my time is poured into the performing arts also 'move im gay' is the best thing to learn in several languages))
"Cool," Ari said, pretty much heading straight for the nearest sit-able thing he could find (and thus ignoring everybody else like the rude person he is). Though he couldn't just sit in it like a normal person, no - he just draped himself over the arm like a cat, burying his face in the cushion. "I'm Riandylan!" Riandylan, meanwhile, chirped out loud, hands flying into the habit of signing. Their eyes practically glowed. "Is there hot chocolate?" they squeaked in excitement.

( lets be real do you really need to know more than move im gay? i thINK NOT mm i like languagey stuff just not actually learning languages lmao but i'm studying some linguistics this year which is v interesting for me! )
Alex was clearly still very confused, actually, probably even more so, but he shook his head and cleared it from his mind, filing it away as a question to ask later, because he was still trying to get his head around the Russ thing. "O-kay... So Russ is like, senior year? And there's... busses and pants? Ugh, I give up." He glanced across to Tori briefly, eyes searching and curious. Was he the only one feeling confused here? He didn't want to interrupt though, so instead he turned his eyes on the others who had joined them. "Hm. Full house," he commented. One of the newcomers was familiar, but he didn't know the name. It was actually nice, everyone there, though. A group of people his own age sure beat Christmas eve with the mishmash of family at home.

( apartment: tiny oliver: small and gentle full: house oliver's anxiety is forcibly removed from this plane of existence as he tries to cater to everyone rather than worry about how terrified he is
but ja move im gay is useful as hell )
'Bad name,' Eva repeated with ASL, raising her eyebrows. Then, she made a gesture. 'Referring to previous comment, not sure if he likes him. Oliver is hard to read'.
She flicked her gaze and smiled at the newcomers, giving a nervous wave. The game was still on in the background, and between her signing to Tori, she was playing - though Maja's patience wore thin.
"Basically," Maja grinned and leaned back lightly. "It's supposed to be the best time of the year, but we moved to America so we won't experience it. Astrid - other older sister - had her Russ year but she wasn't very popular. Silje was popular. Make sense? The more popular you are, the better your Russ year will be."
"Hot chocolate," Oliver repeated lightly, "uh, yeah," he moved to the kitchen and took some hot chocolate from the stove (he was glad he had bothered to make his own from scratch), pouring it into a mug before returning and offering it to Riandylan. He brushed his hands against the backs of his jeans, doing a headcount. "Well. This is," he paused and squinted, "eventful. Maja, endre de TV! Vi har gjester, og vi kommer til å inkludere dem!"
"Nei!" Maja retaliated loudly, but changed the television to some sort of terrible Christmassy reality tv episode.

She caught Alex's eyes, giving him a desperate look that said she felt like she was drowning in all the new people and strange languages. She liked having friendly faces, her eyes catching someone signing outside of her and Eva. Her back straightened up, watching as they signed their name at lightening fast speed. She glanced at Eva, surprised, before signing 'Hi. I'm TORI," at the same speed, but unsure if they saw her introduce herself in the sea of people. On one hand she was happy she was in a group, but with the addition of new people she wanted nothing more but to find an excuse to leave. It was way to many people for her taste, but she stayed, not wanting to just up and leave when she said she'd be here to both Alex and Oliver. So Instead she stuck with Eva, waiting for the other signers response, wondering if they where deaf or not. She nodded at him being hard to read, agreeing with that statement whole heartedly. (Ahhh poor Oliver xc at least he's a good host. )
