Harper let out a soft snort, watching the two dogs. Disdainfully, she turned away and kept her back to them. Fine, if she was to be left out, she would at least do it facing the opposite direction. She rested her head on her paws and gazed out the window, longing for a time of light rain so she could return to her makeshift den.

As the fountain began to fill with new, cleaner water, the gunk was shot from the top of the fountain, projected away from the two dogs. The moment was peaceful, and Brimstone let himself fall into thoughtfulness, the colors dancing in his subconscious. His pelt dripped slightly, but Brimstone felt no need to shake the water from his pelt. It would break the quiet thoughtfulness that the two dogs were sharing.
When Lad spoke, Brimstone couldn't help but take a double check on what he had just said. Was this how Lad really felt? It had all happened so fast, they had barely known each other for more than a couple days, and their first impressions had been less than desirable. Brimstone was quiet a moment, knowing he had to step carefully with what he said next, completely stunned into silence. All he could do was lean into the smaller dog, his eyes distant. Did he even wag that way? He had never thought about male dogs being together, but was it bad? No, but certainly a new concept to Brimstone. So many thoughts were going through his head.
"It's not bad having a dog like you around." “It isn't bad having you around, either,” said Lad somewhat despondently. So this was how Brimstone felt? Was his presence merely good, and that was all? Lad let his head dangle low to the ground, eyes downcast, hoping Brimstone would understand how he felt. He prayed fiercely that it had all been a misconstruction and that Brimstone's words had been the mere beginnings of a testimony of love and compassion—the beginnings of something. Otherwise, he had made a fool of himself for nothing.
“Is that all?” said Lad, halfway angry, halfway derisive. He sighed hoarsely in agitation as it dawned upon him that mockery probably wasn't the best way to handle things.
“I'm sorry,” he said with a shaky shrug. He almost made to leave, but impeded himself just in time. If Brimstone didn't sympathize with said act of clinginess, it would all be over. Brimstone cursed himself violently, leaning down to lick the top of his head. Here, Lad had put his feelings on the line, and he was selfishly thinking selfishly about his own. The sweet dog had tried to invest his feelings in him, and Brimstone had royally messed up. "No, you don't understand. It's not every day a dog gets to meet a dog like you. And when he gets a chance to have a dog like you by his side, it knocks the breath out of him. It's all so new to me, why a week ago I was rotting in a cage until you came by. I'm ot sure how I really feel about you, but I think it's something stronger than what I understand of 'friends.' So if you could give a mutt a chance ot show this dog how he really feels?"

Fortissimo glanced over when he noticed a movement from the corner of his eye. "Come on over! Grab yourself a steak or some bacon" The big dog called to her with a friendly smile and a wag of his thick tail. (sorry it's short.. so sleepy...) Blitz trotted over to him tentatively, but the smell of bacon was too inciting. She smiled down at him and grabbed a strip of bacon, settling down near him. Close enough to be polite, but far enough away to be safe.

So if you could give a mutt a chance ot show this dog how he really feels?" “Of course I will,” murmured Lad, staring into Brimstone's mismatched gaze. For some reason, it had seemed that Brimstone's words were difficult to answer. Why, Lad didn't know. The whippet turned his head away wistfully.
The gangly dog almost knelt down to nibble on a forearm, but disrupted himself in the nick of time. The moment was beautiful, the air seemingly holding its breath, and he didn't want to stop that. He leaned into Brimstone, pressing himself in close. He then craned his neck upward to touch his nose to the fold behind the dog's ear.
The whippet suddenly stopped, ears dropping comically, as a spray of water erupted from the Fountain. It seemed fate that the water should somersault into the exact contours of two dog lovers, trying out something new in the broken world. Water-Brimstone's eye seemed to wink charismatically in Lad's direction before the spray dropped back down with a slap, ruining the image.

Brimstone rested his chin on Lad's head, his damp tail wrapping around his haunches. They leaned into each other for a moment, merely enjoying each other's company, when the water shot from the fountain. It gurgled, before falling with a slap, and Brimstone seemed to be jolted out of his trance. Looking away for a moment, he whispered, "It's getting late. She rested her head on her paws and gazed out the window, longing for a time of light rain so she could return to her makeshift den. Woodrow looked inquiringly at the opposite-facing Harper. What was her problem? He had only been making sure that little Rhapsody was included in the mix.
The wiry terrier yawned widely, his horrid-smelling breath fanning out from his mouth, then looked around nonchalantly. The three were sitting out in the open when really there were legions upon legions of sheltering tables to choose from. The scruffy dog pinpointed the widest and most promising of the tables. He then ran over to the westernmost corner of the domicile, snatched some pillows from a window booth, and pinned these down to the ground, shredding them into a feathery pulp. He carried small quantities over to the shaded place underneath the table one by one. When the stalwart dog was finished, there was a plush nest for the three. Woodrow sat back, satisfied with his work, then leapt onto a chair with some difficulty, searching the table for leftover morsels and crumbs.
The terrier yelped as a grunting noise sounded from the counter to his right. A grimy, pallid creature emerged from the cooking amenities, its skin flaking off and one of its eyes dangling from the socket.
“What . . . is . . . that?” he whispered in horror. It looked kind of like a Human, but no Human he had ever seen. The creature reared up, stumbling over the counter. Woodrow grabbed Rhapsody, shepherding her messily to the doorway.
“Run!” he told his familiars hoarsely, dropping Rhapsody to ram his shoulder into the door. He winced at the pain.
The door had not swung open, and the creature was advancing—rather clumsily, but nonetheless. “Open the door with your weight!” he told Harper hoarsely, panicking. The sun had descended by now, leaving a cold, unwelcoming night in its wake, a night so grim that it mirrored their perilous situation.

. . . But for some, the night was beautiful.
“This wasn't even a walk,” snorted Lad. “We only sat here and chatted. Hmph.”
The former audaciousness was evidently back, Lad noticed. He hoped Brimstone knew that he still thought he was, well, dreamy, notwithstanding the bitter sardonicism issuing from the black whippet's big mouth.
Was the moment gone? Lad shook himself, misting Brimstone with rainwater. He hoped not.

Was the moment gone? Lad shook himself, misting Brimstone with rainwater. He hoped not. Brimstone let out a playful laugh as he was sprayed, shaking his own fur out, sending torrents of water from his thick fur. Already, his pelt was beginning to fluff out, making him look like a big pompom. He turned rapidly, trying to smooth his coat, sighing with frustration. "That'll be a mess in the morning." Turning to Lad and giving him a fond sigh, he could've sworn he had heard something smash.
Rhapsody let out a terrified squeal, charging head on on the drywall door. Smashing straight through it with her thick skull, she grabbed at Woodrow's thick pelt, pulling and tugging him out of the hole. She hooked her paws into the hole, tearing and breaking at the jagged edges, her paws stinging but not quite cut.
Falling back onto her haunches suddenly, she felt quite dizzy. The world was tossing and turning, and she could barely keep up with Woodrow's body spinning around. Forcing herself onto her feet, she tore at the loose hinges, loosening them enough for the door to swing open. "Go go go go go!"
A mess of tumbling fur and limbs, she bolted for the fountain, planning to jump in and deter the human. However, skidding to a halt, she froze a few yards away from two, very big, very scary dogs. Hoping she could back away without them noticing, she slowly scooted backwards, tentatively controlling where she stepped.

She held it open wide enough for the two dogs, then pushed it back closed once the other dogs were out. Thinking quickly, Harper shoved a nearby trash can in front of the door. "Run!" She howled, grabbing Rhapsody by her scruff and running with her.

Hoping she could back away without them noticing, she slowly scooted backwards, tentatively controlling where she stepped. “We come in peace,” pleaded Woodrow, the whites of his eyes flashing, as he skittered to a messy halt alongside the French bulldog. He stepped back, tail low. “We didn't mean anything.”
The rangy terrier almost turned to go, but intercepted himself, forcing his feet to stand firm upon the ground. If they were going to have to fight, they would fight together.
Lad heard a strange crashing noise, then the high-pitched noise of claws skittering upon concrete. He stood foursquare, nose twitching spastically.
A jumble of contours, some pudgy, others limber, stumbled into sight. Lad stood back, taken aback with surprise, then chittered a doggie laugh as he realized the puny stature of his opponents. He jabbed Brimstone with his bony shoulder. “Runts,” he said.

"Whaddaya say, Lad? Should we add them to our pile of dogs we've captured?" Brimstone was back, and ready to torment the little dogs. "What do we have already? A greyhound, shepherd, and a bull terrier? I say these two might not last even a week with them!" He sat back on his haunches, leaning forward to grab Rhapsody up by the scruff. "This one's barely even a mouthful!" Dropping her onto the floor, he eyed her disdainfully. He pulled his mouth grimly, sniffing Woodrow.

((Oh, sorry guys, I didn't see your replies!))
Harper gazed at Lad and Brimstone uneasily, her brown gaze wary. Her auburn fur was raised, fluffy tail curled over her back. She took a step in front of Woodrow and Rhapsody protectively, lips raising to snarl at Brimstone. "Don't touch them." She warned, slightly yellowing teeth gleaming. Her pointed ears laid back, a sign that she was ready to defend her newfound friends if necessary.

He pulled his mouth grimly, sniffing Woodrow. “Don't hurt me!” screamed Woodrow, jerking back defensively. “Or her!” he added with more enthusiasm, eyeing Rhapsody helplessly. He instinctually lifted his hind paws to Lad's face, thrumming them against the whippet's snout in a painfully staccato rhythm.
In an instant, the dog had him on his paws. Woodrow snarled more out of fear than spite, kicking vainly at the larger dog's chest.
Lad shrieked in pain as the other dog pummeled his chest. Forgetting Brimstone, who he had been ready to aid in torture before, he bore down upon the smaller dog, slamming his weight down faster than a thunderbolt. “Have you no dignity?” he snarled. “What are you three, blind?” The black sighthound eyed Harper, challenging and derisive. “Gonna stand by, or do something?” he mocked. “You're the only one strong enough. Runt.” Lad and Brimstone were destined to be the kings of the deserted conurbation, he just knew it. And he also knew with striking intensity that they would do anything to achieve this horrific goal.
The whippet prepared to grab Woodrow by the scruff, but ultimately failed as the weasel-like terrier wriggled from under him, seizing his snout and biting down hard. Lad shrieked with pain, a muffled sound.

Drown him in the fountain?" He took a step towards Rhapsody, who squealed and scuttled backwards. Woodrow squealed and squirmed in Brimstone's jaws. He kicked the dog's chin roughly, but it seemed that it caused the shepherd little pain. He barked and snarled throatily as the whippet advanced, inspecting him. Feeling uncomfortable and rather corrupted, Woodrow yelped.
Lad chuckled. “Good work, Brim,” he said, the absentminded use of the byname startling him as he realized what he had done. Hoping Brimstone had not noticed, Lad sauntered closer, shoving his muzzle in the little terrier's face after inspecting him closely with both eye and nose. The little dog snarled, “Get away!” and Lad cackled unpleasantly. He hoped Brimstone wouldn't notice that, either.
It was funny how he seemed to be noticing more and more of his flaws lately. This realization still vivid in his mind, Lad stepped back. “Let him stay,” he said idly, much to his surprise. The sentence seemed to have burst forth from his mouth. Still, terriers like this were valuable for hunting and tracking. “These little things are good trackers,” he added, prodding the little creature with his nose.

“Bully!” Woodrow sniped. “Piece of . . . of . . . dirt!” he finished feebly, squirming. As he wiggled, however, the larger dog's tooth jabbed at his neck, digging deeper.
Struggling vainly, he only succeeded in having the tooth puncture deeper. “STOP!” he yelled, in real pain. Tears of agony welled up in his eyes. “PUT ME DOWN!” he added in a mighty shriek.

Brimstone laughed. "You shouldn't have trespassed into our territory. We have claimed the Town Square."
"You are just so ... mean!" Rhapsody genuinely sounded distraught, shocked that one dog could be so mean.
"Oh, does puppy not like what the real world is like?"
"No, I just don't like you!" Rhapsody charged at Brimstone, ramming her hard little head into his shin. Brimstone yelped, dropping Woodrow in the process. He hopped from paw to paw, as the little dog fastened her teeth into his paw, shaking her head vigorously. Brimstone growled as teeth punctured his paw pads, batting at the huge ears that flopped from side to side.
He sat on his haunches, wincing as he did so, trying to pry Rhapsody off like she was an annoying tick. However, the little dog had set her jaw, and was chewing with determination on his foot. "Get off, worm!"
"You have to promise not to hurt me, or my friends!"
Brimstone growled, rolling his eyes in exasperation. "Alright. Just let go already."
The little dog did as told, and sat back on her haunches, licking blood from the wrinkles of her muzzle. Scampering over to Woodrow and licking the back of his neck, shook him gently. "Hey, Row, are you ok? Get up! We've got to see what these big dogs want! We little dogs have to stick together, right?"

Woodrow only moaned piteously in response, the incoherent sound even more garbled than normal for any living being. His head had slammed down hard upon the concrete. Head pulsating with pain, he painstakingly rose to his feet, the blood rushing from his head, dizzying him.
He perked up instantly as the anger returned. “That's what you get for being mean!” he cried, legitimately furious, gesturing toward the bite-mark that now adorned Brimstone's body. He snuffled and sneezed, then, composing himself, thumped Lad deliberately on the nose with his plumy tail.
Lad looked on in almost exasperation as he watched the smaller dogs yammer on and on. He passed Brimstone a dry look, then turned back to the other two, scolding them like a stern dam:
“Well, you shouldn't have come here, then!” he snapped. “This place belongs to us,” he added, oblivious to the fact that there were scarcely any other potential territories in the vicinity. Turning, the gangly whippet adressed Brimstone: “We should take them.” He narrowed his eyes, scornful gaze roving Harper's features. “As for this one? Well, she might just be a bit more of a challenge.”
Woodrow yelped and caterwauled as Lad clutched him harshly by the ruff and proceeded to carry him off, the lesser dog dangling from the whippet's jaws like a young whelp.
“I'll teach you not to mess with me!” he snarled, but his offender didn't seem to hear, eyes narrowed with concentration as though the task at hand were the most difficult one yet.
Not as difficult as taking over more than half the town, I suppose? criticized a negative voice, and Woodrow couldn't help but agree.
