Lad accepted Brimstone's curling around him with contentment, readily snuggling up against the other dog's warm, floccose pelt. He glanced at the assemblage of trash positioned by the doorway, feeling as comfortable as though he were a fox kit in the whelping den or a hatchling in the nest. He sleepily passed his tongue over Brimstone's jaw and wriggled into a more comfortable position.
And yet he couldn't sleep. He gave a yawn punctuated by a squeaking squeal of frustration. Minute by minute, he grew more agitated, his eyes beginning to sting and his paws beginning to twitch. He was beginning to grow fidgety, tossing or turning every few seconds. What was keeping him awake?
“Brimstone,” he murmured, a little surprised at how groggy his voice sounded. Brimstone was in a state of between consciousness and sleep, barely drifting off before he would be snapped back by one of Lad's fidgetings. Blinking himself awake, he smoothed the fur on top of Lad's head.
"Yeah? What's on your mind?"
He moved so that he was leaning on his elbows, and lying on his side, looking at Lad intently. "I'm guessing you can't sleep. Those dogs out there bothering you? I'll drive them out if you need me to. Are you thirsty, hungry?" Lad sighed a little, a noise cut off when he closed his eyes, relishing Brimstone's brief grooming of him. He blinked his eyelids apart. “I wish they could just leave,” said Lad glumly. “Let them stay, though, for now,” he continued reluctantly. “No, that isn't what I meant. I just can't sleep. A lot has gone on today.” The whippet paused, arranging himself into a more comfortable position for conferring. “We could go for a walk,” he suggested, more for Brimstone's benefit than his own. He could tell Brimstone was being genuinely curteous here, and he wouldn't let the shepherd mongrel get so worked up for nothing.

Brimstone followed suit, shooting a suspicious glare at the other dogs, piling up rubbish at the door way, holing themselves in in a way. Hopping onto the cubicle, he curled around Lad, his flanks rising and falling slowly. His breathing began to slow, his eyes shutting.
Parker looked towards April, making a face and sticking his tongue out playfully. He pretended to puke, wagging his tail in the direction that Brimstone and Lad went. He rolled his eyes, leaning into April, and settling down on his haunches. [[ Do you guys want to time skip. April snickered and pressed into the male's black coat. Her eyes became droopy, but she fought off her urge to sleep, "We need to get inside for the night. I think a storm is going to come through." She craned her neck to see inside of the broken door that Lad and Brimstone had entered earlier, "You think they would kill us if we went inside the building? I just can't get sick if it starts to rain, you know? My pups would be in danger." Her voice cracked slightly at the thought of losing her unborn pups. She would have to risk the journey inside the building.

Sorry for short replies, homework calls. ]]
Brimstone nodded agreeably. "If you think you still have some energy to get out, that just might do the trick." Heaving himself to his paws, he glanced around the room, hopping down from the filing cabinet in the cubicle. He glanced back at Lad, as if to wait for him to find his paws. "Any place you had in mind?"

Harper, now that she was done eating, hesitated. The auburn dog gazed outside for a long moment, then back at Rhapsody and Woodrow. Her tail wagged once, as if to say 'Alright,' and settled down beside him. She was fluffier and larger, hoping that she provided some comfort to the newfound friends. "Where are you two from? This town, or another?" She asked curiously, tilting her head towards them, dark nose twitching.

Fortissimo lay in a corner of the shelter. He had a strip of bacon draped across one thick, brown leg. He woofed happily as he loudly told a story of his old life to anyone who was willing to listen. His thick, sausage-like tail thumped the ground occasionally for emphasis or simply from excitement.

There was no place in the town of Aberstwyth more beautiful than . . . “The Fountain,” breathed the gangly sighthound. “The one that lights up a million colors at night.” Lad thought in wonder of the beautiful reflections of color bouncing off of water, of vibrant, fecund shades illuminating the night with a soft, ethereal glow. “We could take a dip,” he added suggestively, oblivious to the fact that the Fountain required constant upkeep, a convenience unknown to the Beasts, and thus could not have been very clean at that point.

Blitz wandered the area, searching shelter from the impending storm. She bounded into the a near by building and then shook her fur out. Her black ears twitched at the sound of another dog's voice and unconsciously her feet lead her in the direction of the voice. By the smell of it, he also had food, which was always a bonus. She came upon him quickly and watched him from a distance, head cocked and tail wagging.

One could never be too warm: That was his motto. Woodrow cleared his throat a little, then said:
“Oh, I think I'm from a neighborhood a little to the east. I don't know the name,” he added admittedly, as if that weren't obvious enough.

Following Lad through the streets to the fountain, he sat back on his haunches, watching the water shoot up from the center. It waltzed, danced, touching the sky, before dropping into the water with a slap. The half-awake dog suggestion a swim, and Brimstone leant forward, tapping the water with a paw. It was freezing, and smelled bitter and foul. Despite its beautiful appearance shooting up in intervals to the sky, up close, its flaws became ever more evident. "You sure? It's kind of cold, and insanitary."

Drizzling rain sheeted down over the little dog, cold and unwelcoming. He shuddered with cold and busied himself with licking his fur despondently, trying to rid himself of the chill. Brimstone moved to stand over Lad, acting as a shelter. His fur was thick and becoming heavy with water, but he didn't mind. He was accustomed to the cold, from long nights herding sheep, and the rain felt nice as it washed over his pelt. It acted almost like a shower for the thick fur, and the fountain began to overflow, spilling sheets of the dirty water over. Most of the dirt was carried out from the fountain, having been stirred up by the heavy rain. Brimstone leaped into the water, diving to pull the plug from the water, watching the dirt and grime spiral down the hole. Paddling around in the fountain, he slowly sunk down the 3 feet that was the depth of the fountain, all the while kicking dirt into the drain, using his tail as a broom. Working the plug back into place, he sat back, satisfied. By tomorrow, he and Lad would have a fine swimming pool. Leaping for the side, he hooked his paws over the side, pulling himself up and over to stand next to Lad once more.

Lad nudged Brimstone's chest with his bony head as the larger dog stood protectively over him.
When his lover made to move, he braced himself to give an indignant lecture, but held back as he realized what the shepherd mix was up to. The gangly whippet stood back surveying the spectacle, shimmering with what was almost fondness.
Lad nuzzled Brimstone as the other dog leapt from the pool, pelt saturated with freezing water, then looked back at the Fountain. The colors shone much more aestival without all the unneeded filth, radiating forth like alpenglow. The whippet almost smiled.
He braced himself to say what he was about to say. This had all happened way too fast, hadn't it? It had only been what, three days? Lad held back from shaking himself as he normally did; Brimstone had already had one bath.
But notwithstanding the odds, it seemed as if they were drawn together. They were kindred spirits.
“You're dreamy,” whispered Lad hoarsely.

“You're dreamy,” whispered Lad hoarsely. As the fountain began to fill with new, cleaner water, the gunk was shot from the top of the fountain, projected away from the two dogs. The moment was peaceful, and Brimstone let himself fall into thoughtfulness, the colors dancing in his subconscious. His pelt dripped slightly, but Brimstone felt no need to shake the water from his pelt. It would break the quiet thoughtfulness that the two dogs were sharing.
When Lad spoke, Brimstone couldn't help but take a double check on what he had just said. Was this how Lad really felt? It had all happened so fast, they had barely known each other for more than a couple days, and their first impressions had been less than desirable. Brimstone was quiet a moment, knowing he had to step carefully with what he said next, completely stunned into silence. All he could do was lean into the smaller dog, his eyes distant. Did he even wag that way? He had never thought about male dogs being together, but was it bad? No, but certainly a new concept to Brimstone. So many thoughts were going through his head.
"It's not bad having a dog like you around."

"It's not bad having a dog like you around." “It isn't bad having you around, either,” said Lad somewhat despondently. So this was how Brimstone felt? Was his presence merely good, and that was all? Lad let his head dangle low to the ground, eyes downcast, hoping Brimstone would understand how he felt. He prayed fiercely that it had all been a misconstruction and that Brimstone's words had been the mere beginnings of a testimony of love and compassion—the beginnings of something. Otherwise, he had made a fool of himself for nothing.
“Is that all?” said Lad, halfway angry, halfway derisive. He sighed hoarsely in agitation as it dawned upon him that mockery probably wasn't the best way to handle things.
“I'm sorry,” he said with a shaky shrug. He almost made to leave, but impeded himself just in time. If Brimstone didn't sympathize with said act of clinginess, it would all be over.

A thought suddenly occured to him, and he turned, nuzzling Rhapsody. He felt that the French bulldog wasn't being included in their makeshift inner circle. He also simultaneously felt inclined, by some natural force, to protect and shepherd this smaller, chunkier dog. This deed alone mirrored the unsung bit of thoughfulness that resided somewhere deep inside.
