Palepaw lightly frowned. He didn't believe a mentor should be abandoning their apprentice like this. "Well, I have chore rotation today. You're welcome to help me. If we get done early, we could practice battle moves." "Really?" Fuzzypaw chirped, eyes practically sparkling. "Yes, please! I'd love to!" Palepaw chuckled and started for the camp entrance. "Alright. You can help me gather some moss for the elders and queens. Once we replace their nests we can train a little."

Closesky flicked his tail. "That is curious." He looked around the camp. "I can't say I've noticed him spending any time with other warriors. Perhaps someone is taking him out and not wanting the recognition, or perhaps one of the other apprentices?" Longkit chuckled lightly. "I suppose if I get Houndthroat and you Smokestorm, at least I'll be training." He then shook his head. "I doubt we get cool mentors like the senior warriors. I haven't even heard any of the warriors talking about wanting to mentor us and I've tried listening in on their conversations." "I'll visit you two everyday if you'd like," Eaglesight purred softly. "And if I find something nice, I can bring it to you. I can bring you things you can find out in our territory so you get familiar with them." Cedarstar followed behind Rustlepaw, watching her closely on how she navigated the forest. He was glad to see she felt most comfortable in camp and hoped she'd grow as comfortable with the rest of the territory as well. The blind apprentice in his dreams took a while to get familiar with the territory, he bet he could get Rustlepaw there faster, especially with her drive. He was rather pleased with her methods now. Cedarstar glanced at a pine cone coming up on the path. Something the dream apprentice did often was get so focused on what was immediately around him and where he was going, he forgot to pay attention to further off in the forest and if an enemy patrol or a fox was trying to sneak up on them...Cedarstar quietly picked the pine cone up in his mouth and threw it so it hit nearby trees and fell into a regrowing plant. “I’ve noticed him with Vixenflame recently. I’m wondering if she’s been the one helping him, though I admittedly can’t see how she’d advance his skills so swiftly, even if she was a prodigal Warrior.” Honeypaw admitted, his voice both lightly frustrated and heavily curious. His curiosity was insatiable when it was triggered. “What Warrior would improve him so well and not want credit?” “Yeah…” Lightkit puffed lightly. “I was listening in to the Warriors like you said too, and nope. Nothing.” Her ears fell a bit, but she tried to keep positive. “We’re special too. We’ve got to be. We’ll prove it!” “Okay!” Flowerkit giggled, looking up at his uncle. “That’ll make me super happy!” Rustlepaw stopped immediately the moment the pinecone struck the trees and landed into what sounded like underbrush. Her fur prickled with warning as she swiveled her head around and perked her ears, muzzle lifted to try and catch a scent of whatever made that sound. She lifted her tail, whispering. “Cedarstar. Something moved…or fell?” She tried, unsure.

"Sure!" she emerged from the camp into the pine forest, inhaling a fresh lungful of air. "I love coming out into the forest," she mewed. "Let's find the softest moss!"

Closesky let out a hum as he thought about Honeypaw's question. "Well, any warrior who wouldn't want to get on Ashrock's bad side for one." he sighed at the thought of his son's temper. "It could even be a group of warriors. Perhaps Vixenflame and a few of the other younger warriors wanted to help assist Coalpaw to give themselves a taste of what mentorship is like before they get their own apprentices."
Longkit gave his sister a grateful look. As energizing as her boundless optimism was, he was still doubtful. They were Ratmask's kits. No one in the Clan liked Ratmask, he heard it from several different warriors. "Sure we will," he mewed calmly. He was trying to share her optimism for her sake, but why would any of the warriors pay them any attention when cats like Rustlepaw, her siblings, Palepaw, and his siblings were in the Clan? They didn't have those extraordinary lineages. Yeah, Leaffrost came from Spiderfang, but Ratmask? Longkit heard Ratmask's mother hated him and his father was dead because of Ratmask. Longkit sighed.
"I'm glad to hear that." Eaglesight purred in response to Flowerkit. "I'll always be here for you kits. Especially whenever you need me."
Cedarstar blinked in satisfaction when Rustlepaw immediately stopped. He still himself, but scented the air to be sure they were the only ones around. "Decide for yourself, Rustlepaw. You'll need to be able to determine every sound if you're going to be able to come out here on your own."

"With the fire, moss has been harder to come by, but my siblings and I have been trying to keep the rocks behind camp damp from puddles so moss can grow. Come on!" He motioned along the outer camp wall to show Fuzzypaw where he meant. "Hopefully, some moss is starting to grow like the trees. Otherwise, we'll have to get some from along the back territory."

Patches of sunlight broke through the pine canopy, shining on the forest floor. Small buds and stems were poking through, hinting at the recovery of their territory from the blaze. Turning her attention back to the cat in front of her, she continued. "Seriously, though, it is! That's really clever, how did you think of it?"

"But Cedarstar and Ashrock's feud has done nothing but inhibit my brother, and now I can't even tell who is training who at this moment." He glanced around at some of the Warriors in camp, suspicious. "I swear, it is right under our noses, why can I not figure this out? Why would he not tell me if he were having advanced lessons with groups of Warriors?" He asked. "Maybe we can do something really impressive and prove that we're as special as the others." Lightkit mewed, looking lost in thoughts for a moment as she thought of Longkit's words. "Even if I want the biggest feather in the whole world?" Grovekit challenged her uncle, popping her head out from underneath some of the nest and looking right up at the older tom. Rustlepaw was silent at that, but she quickly lifted her ears again, moved her muzzle and scented the air. No fox scent, or badger, certainly no enemy clan. Instead, she could only scent the undergrowth of the pines, and hear the faint breeze. She flicked her tail, before putting confidence into her deduction. "Something fell. There's no scents that changed, or signs of a dangerous attacker." She reported.

"Whorlpaw was complaining the other day about have to trek across the territory to find moss for the queens and elders. Duskpaw suggested that since the forest was starting to grow back, why not try to help the moss grow back?" Palepaw slipped around a bend to the backside of the camp. "I picked the spot. There's plenty of shade and boulders over here to be ideal for moss to grow. See?" He nodded ahead. "We stole a bit of moss from the medicine den so it can grow more out here. All we have to do is keep the area wet. Looks like we have some sprouts." He gingerly stepped forward to inspect the mud and rocks for any moss growth. There was some, but not enough for what they needed. "We keep this going and we'll have a good stock of moss after a while."

Closesky blinked curiously, but then a slow realization slipped in his eyes. "So, Coalpaw has been advancing in his training, but hasn't told anyone about it--not even you, Honeypaw, or Crystalpaw? And no cat is coming forward to take the credit for his swift advancement?"
Whorlpaw nodded. "That pretty much sums it up."
Closesky purred in amusement and began cleaning his paws. "I see."
"It'd have to be something really special." Longkit looked at his sister. "Do you have something in mind?"
"Of course!" Eaglesight chuckled. "I've seen feathers longer than you are! Just wait until the clan catches another vulture."
"Well done," Cedarstar nodded with a bit of pride. "That sound was a pinecone tossed against the trees."

Closesky seemed to suddenly realize something, and Honeypaw wanted to know what that was. “Well…” Lightkit looked thoughtful, before she perked her ears up. “Oh! Maybe we can catch some prey, and bring back a big old bird, just like how Tumblefoot did!” “What’s a Vulture?” Flowerkit asked curiously. “Can I see one?” Rustlepaw perked her ears at that, before she felt her pelt go warm as she realized what must have happened. She gave a sheepish and soft chuckle. “Oh… I see now. Well. Not see, but. It was a test, wasn’t it?” She licked her chest quickly. “I hear you. Focus on things from far away too, not just up near my muzzle, is that it?”

"Well..." Closesky shrugged with a small smile on his face. He didn't see the harm in the apprentices realizing what he did. Perhaps it would help his sons? "We were pondering that the warrior training Coalpaw didn't want Ashrock to find out about them training, but perhaps it's Cedarstar the warrior doesn't want to find out?
Whorlpaw tilted her head. "What do you mean? My father would honor anyone that picked up Coalpaw's training."
Closesky gave her a knowing look. "Anyone?"
"If we leave camp, we'll get in a lot of trouble," Longkit frowned lightly. "but the Clan does need prey..."
"Once the Clan catches another one, I'll show you both. They'll essentially large birds. Larger than myself even!" Eaglesight informed. "It was Goldberry and Tumblefoot who developed the hunting technique to catch them. A lot of vultures hang out the carrionplace, so the two of them laid prey out as bait to draw their attention. Once a vulture swooped down, the two warriors ambushed it! That's how Tumblefoot got his warrior name by catching one."
Cedarstar smiled. She was clever. That was good. "That's right. You never know when something might try to take advantage of you. Even seeing warriors need to remain alert while in the territory. It my be our territory, but foxes, badgers, and other animals don't respect borders like we do."

Honeypaw was silent for a moment, digesting the words and letting his quick thinking brain do the work. In a few heartbeats, his eyes widened and he looked up at Closesky. "You... are you implying that Coalpaw is being trained by Ashrock, and that they're keeping it hidden? That..." He hesitated, before he scowled fiercely. "That makes way too much sense, and I hate that it does. Starclan, how foolish, that I didn't think of that first!"
"The whole clan was all torn up about the scary fire. Cedarstar made Tumblefoot a Warrior because he brought back prey! Imagine what he'll do if we bring back a big piece of prey too!" Lightkit exclaimed, the thrill of a secret adventure making her tingle with excitement. "We've been practicing our sneakiness for a long time, and the clan likes to sleep alot during the day. Maybe we can catch prey then."
"Woah!" Flowerkit squeaked, entranced by the tone in Eaglesight's voice. He had seen his first bird the day he opened his eyes, in awe of how they flew in the sky when he could not. "Tumblefoot got to be a Warrior by catching one! I wanna catch one then!"
"Me too! Me first!" Grovekit squealed with excitement.
"Right. They don't have Clans or codes, like we do." Rustlepaw nodded, understanding her mentor's words clearly. She was grateful that Cedarstar was so clever, and that he seemed to almost seem used to teaching a cat like her. Maybe he'd learned some things from Longsight when the legendary Warrior was alive, or maybe Cedarstar was just naturally a versatile mentor. Either way, she was grateful that he went out of his way to help test her. "I'll remember that. Now that I can get around what's in front of my paws better, maybe I don't need to block out everything else anymore." She admitted sheepishly.

Whorlpaw blinked in surprise. She looked from Honeypaw to Closesky. "Ashrock can't do that! My father forbid him from training Coalpaw!"
"Cedarstar might be Clan leader," Closesky twitched his whiskers. "But he and Ashrock are still brothers. They've always had a hard time taking orders from each other."
Whorlpaw frowned. "My siblings and I aren't like that."
Closesky gave her a knowing look. "You and your siblings weren't raised the same as my kits, Whorlpaw. ShadowClan was a tougher Clan back then and I had to be hard on my sons to make sure they were strong enough to handle it. Ashrock and Cedarstar will always have their disagreements, but one thing's for sure: they will both do what they believe is right for ShadowClan." He looked at Honeypaw. "Including training Coalpaw behind the Clan's back."
Longkit flicked his ear. The idea was a tempting one. ShadowClan always hunted at night, was most alive at night. No one would notice them slip away. They were two insignificant kits, the only one who would care would be Leaffrost. "We can't use the front entrance," Longkit decided. He squinted at the entrance of camp. It was always guarded, day and night. "But...we might be able to sneak out behind the medicine den. In those brambles you and I were just in." If they could create a big enough hole for themselves...this could actually work.
Eaglesight lightheartedly chuckled. "You'll get your chance, don't worry. However, before you do, you have to endure quite a bit of training. Cedarstar only allows the older apprentices to try their claws on a vulture. You see, being so large, they are also quite dangerous. They have talons as big as my head and long, beaks sharper than any claw. If you two ever see one near the camp, you be sure to come straight back here to the nursery."
"I'm glad to hear that." Cedarstar stepped up beside her. "You're learning quickly, Rustlepaw. I couldn't be prouder. Now, let's get to the Burnt Sycamore so you can start battle training."

I'm sure not everyone will want to add another chore of growing moss on top of everything else we do. Down here. " Palepaw descended into a small hollow at the back end of the territory. The ground was quite soaked from any water that ran down hill here. "No one really comes here a lot because there usually isn't any prey around, but it's always collecting water." Palepaw pushed his paws into the ground and water welled up around them. "See? Even after the fire, it's still pretty soaked. All we need is something to carry it back to the moss hollow." (Correct me if I'm wrong, but was Fuzzypaw born and raised in ShadowClan or brought to ShadowClan?)

Fuzzypaw looked around the hollow, kneading her paws on the muddy ground as she thought. Then, her eyes fell on something half-buried in the sludge. "There!" She scrabbled up the other side of the hollow, digging for a moment before pulling the shell of a long-dead turtle up. Kicking it down towards Palepaw, she shuddered. "Kinda gross...but will it work?" (Initially she was Clan-born because I didn'tt have time for a backstory, but then it was retconned so she was brought in after the fire! I posted the drabble here --> wcrpforums.com/post/3089883/thread , but i dont think her description on the clan page was updated. Sorry for the confusion!)

Palepaw blinked in surprise at her find. "You've got a great eye! That'll be perfect. We could even store it at the moss hollow for anyone to use." Palepaw dug into the mud to allow more water to collect so it was easier to scoop out. "There. How's that?"

"That should work!" Fuzzypaw slithered back down to meet him, the muddy water covering her paws as she misstepped. Using her paws, she tilted the shell so water ran in, filling it. "You take one side, and I take the other?" she mewed, crouching down as she looked up at Palepaw. (No worries! Thank you, Moon! )

Palepaw stepped back to give her room. "Sure. Too bad we'll be bathing the rest of the day to get this mud off our paws." He flicked his paw to get a clump of mud off. "But if this works, we'll be able to sustain enough moss that we might not have to do this as often. Hopefully with New-leaf we'll get more rain. That'll help too."

Fuzzypaw chuffed a small laugh, nodding in agreement. Her fur was particularly hard to groom, especially with the knots she would find. "I hope so! As much as I love the marsh on this side of the territory, it's an awfully long walk, and it's not as if there's lots to hunt...unless you like chasing frogs!" she mewed. Pausing, she tilted her head. "Well, I do, but that's not the point. Let's get this water back to the camp!"

Palepaw twitched his whiskers in amusement at what Fuzzypaw said. It reminded him how at the last gathering he heard there was a warrior in RiverClan who liked chasing minnows. Chasing frogs made more sense in his mind. He dipped his head to gingerly take the turtle shell in his teeth. Ready to go when Fuzzypaw was.

Once Palepaw had a hold of the shell, Fuzzypaw carefully lifted it, her jaw already uncomfortable with the awkward angle. However, she did her best to ignore her discomfort as the two of them began the wobbly, uncoordinated walk to camp, the shell full of water precariously held between them.

She looked over at her two other kits and smiled when she saw Skullkit wandering around the nest on wobbly legs, his eyes wide open now. Vulturekit hobbled around on strong legs, the little kit determined to explore the moment he realized he could. He blinked, eyes sharp and bright. Talltalon hesitated outside of the nursery, before he finally calmed his nerves and pushed his way in. A frog hung from his jaws, but he looked surprised when he noticed all three kits’ eyes were now opened. He put the frog in front of Leapordshadow, mewing with bewilderment. “They opened them so fast!…I imagine they’ll want to see everything.”

Leopardshadow looked up and gave a purr, “Yes. They’re growing fast and strong.” She mewed, giving her mate a smile, “They will make Fune warriors one day.”
Beekit squeaked and finally squirmed out of her mother’s paws. She scrambled to her paws and gave her fur a shake before scurrying over to inspect her father and his catch.
Skullkit tilted his head up as Talltalon came into the nursery and sat down close to his mother.

Skullkit tilted his head up as Talltalon came into the nursery and sat down close to his mother. Talltalon looked between the three kits, a bit surprised when they began to all come over and inspect him. He did his best to regain himself, knowing he had to start getting used to this, and start thinking more like a father than just a Warrior. He swallowed, but soon leaned down and took in a deep breath. “Now you can see me. I am your father, Talltalon.” He tapped their foreheads with his nose almost awkwardly, but tried his best. How did some other toms make it look so easy? Vulturekit squeaked as his father touched his muzzle to his head, and he immediately tried to paw at the tall tom’s nose.
