Leopardshadow watched her mate and kits with a smile before turning her attention to the frog Talltalon had brought, “Well, since you’re here, you can distract them while I eat.” She said, taking a bite.
Skullkit blinked when Talltalon touched his forehead with his muzzle and sat back. He looked around until his gaze was drawn to his father’s tail, approaching it slowly, he batted at the tail tip.

He flicked it towards Skullkit, giving him more of a challenge. Vulturekit quickly focused on his father’s tail as well, and he nudged his way to Skullkit’s side, trying to reach Talltalon’s tail first.

Once Palepaw had a hold of the shell, Fuzzypaw carefully lifted it, her jaw already uncomfortable with the awkward angle. However, she did her best to ignore her discomfort as the two of them began the wobbly, uncoordinated walk to camp, the shell full of water precariously held between them. Palepaw had his ears back with focus as he kept a smooth walk to keep the water from spilling. When they reached the hollow, Palepaw flicked with his tail where the water needed to go.

Following Palepaw's direction, the water was poured across the areas where the moss was to grow. Once finished, the shell was discarded and Fuzzypaw plopped into the dirt on her haunches with a huff. "Phew! The walk back felt so much farther than the walk there!" Stretching her jaw experimentally, she wrinkled her nose in a grimace. "Ugh, I don't think I'll be able to chew for a whole moon. But I'm glad we got the water here!"

Whorlpaw blinked in surprise. She looked from Honeypaw to Closesky. "Ashrock can't do that! My father forbid him from training Coalpaw!" "Cedarstar might be Clan leader," Closesky twitched his whiskers. "But he and Ashrock are still brothers. They've always had a hard time taking orders from each other." Whorlpaw frowned. "My siblings and I aren't like that." Closesky gave her a knowing look. "You and your siblings weren't raised the same as my kits, Whorlpaw. ShadowClan was a tougher Clan back then and I had to be hard on my sons to make sure they were strong enough to handle it. Ashrock and Cedarstar will always have their disagreements, but one thing's for sure: they will both do what they believe is right for ShadowClan." He looked at Honeypaw. "Including training Coalpaw behind the Clan's back." Longkit flicked his ear. The idea was a tempting one. ShadowClan always hunted at night, was most alive at night. No one would notice them slip away. They were two insignificant kits, the only one who would care would be Leaffrost. "We can't use the front entrance," Longkit decided. He squinted at the entrance of camp. It was always guarded, day and night. "But...we might be able to sneak out behind the medicine den. In those brambles you and I were just in." If they could create a big enough hole for themselves...this could actually work. Eaglesight lightheartedly chuckled. "You'll get your chance, don't worry. However, before you do, you have to endure quite a bit of training. Cedarstar only allows the older apprentices to try their claws on a vulture. You see, being so large, they are also quite dangerous. They have talons as big as my head and long, beaks sharper than any claw. If you two ever see one near the camp, you be sure to come straight back here to the nursery." "I'm glad to hear that." Cedarstar stepped up beside her. "You're learning quickly, Rustlepaw. I couldn't be prouder. Now, let's get to the Burnt Sycamore so you can start battle training." “After he neglected his training enough, certainly.” Honeypaw grunted with a twinge of resentment, though he sighed and pushed the thoughts away as he looked up at Closesky. “What good will it do? Even if Ashrock was training him, Cedarstar will find out sooner or later. Surely Cedarstar can’t just assume that Coalpaw is a prodigal learner without a proper, full-time mentor. It’s an illogical notion. What if Coalpaw is punished for it?” He asked, concerned for his brother. “Of course it’ll work! When you and I do it together, it’s sure to work. That’s a smart idea, we can slip right out!” Lightkit whispered excitedly, wanting to bring back the fattest prey the clan had ever seen. “Looking forward to it!” Rustlepaw purred, excitement filling her at the prospect of battle training. She continued onwards, remembering the direction of the Burnt Sycamore. Perhaps today, she could learn some more difficult moves, like Spottedpaw was starting to practice for. She paused though, ears falling back as a scent she never smelled before filled her nose. A tang of blood scent, and a musk of what she knew was squirrel was covered by this new and overwhelming scent. She stopped in her tracks, muzzle turned towards the direction of the boundaries of Shadowclan’s territory. “Cedarstar… I uhm… I don’t recognize this scent. It smells awful.” She whispered. “It’s somewhere over there, I can’t tell if it’s in our borders or outside of it, but it’s very strong.”

Instead, he reminded himself that all kits were active at this age. He could handle this… he could be a father. He flicked his tail between both of his sons, before perking lightly as a mossball rolled to his paws. He looked up, blinking at Beekit, before he lifted his paw and clumsily swatted it back to her. It had been a very long time since he had thrown a mossball.

Beekit chased after the mossball, tripping over her paws a little bit in her excitement. She pounced on the ball and batted at it a bit before kicking it back to Talltalon.
Skullkit reared on his back legs to swat at Talltalon’s tail, a little unsteady. Suddenly loosing his balance, he stumbled and fell. Skullkit rolled back to his paws and shook his fur out.

Leopardshadow finished her meal and sat back, “They certainly have energy.” She said, her eyes shining in amusement. “They’ve kept me busy the past couple of days.”
Skullkit batted back at Vulturekit before crouching and pouncing at him. He nipped at him playfully.
Beekit tried to jump for the mossball, but it sailed over her head and she landed with a small thump. She got to her paws and gave herself a shake before going after the mossball.

She was already such a good mother. A part of him feared he could not match her, yet he reminded himself that she had already soothed his worries moons ago. The tom watched Beekit with a long stare, starting to feel that love and protectiveness he once felt long ago, when Finchflight was still alive, and when he was not alone. Vulturekit gave a little squeak, before he growled playfully and battered his paws at his brother.

It smells awful.” She whispered. “It’s somewhere over there, I can’t tell if it’s in our borders or outside of it, but it’s very strong.” Closesky chuckled lightly and shook his head. "Cedarstar would never punish an apprentice for seeking training. He may disapprove of who does the training, but he knows even apprentices deserve a say in who trains them. I didn't fully approve of Cliffheart being Cedarstar's mentor when he was younger, but Cedarstar enjoyed having Cliffheart as his mentor. If Coalpaw enjoys Ashrock, Cedarstar won't condemn him for it, but Cedarstar will likely condemn his brother..." Closesky sighed. "Thankfully, his time in the medicine den has taught Ashrock to appreciate his warrior duties a bit more, unfortunately, Cedarstar doesn't see that." "But he will!" Whorlpaw lashed her tail in distress. She didn't like this kind of talk about her father. "My father's not a cruel cat!" "I didn't say that, Whorlpaw," Closesky smiled gently. "It's just when it comes to Cedarstar and Ashrock, they have a lot of things to work out. It's my fault. I pushed them to be competitive, but they've got to work through their issues on their own." Longkit smiled. He was glad Lightkit was into the idea. "When we bring back the biggest prey in the territory, the whole Clan will be unable to deny how special we are." Cedarstar flattened his ears when the new scent crossed his nose. He didn't recognize it either and he didn't like it. Something clearly hunted in their territory. Cedarstar laid his tail on Rustlepaw to signal for her get low and stay there. He then slipped into a stalking crouch himself and slipped closer to the scent's origin. A few paces off was the mutilated squirrel. Cedarstar carefully slipped closer, ears swiveling for sounds that might indicate if the owner of the new scent was nearby. He stopped in the shadows near the dead prey and his eyes narrowed at it. This wasn't a normal kill. Nothing some rogue or loner could do. The squirrel's spine was snapped and bits of it's bones were laying about the area. Cedarstar went back to Rustlepaw. "Head back to camp. Tell Cloudscar I want a patrol of experienced warriors out here. I don't know what this new scent is, but we need to make sure it's left the territory. The borders will need to be refreshed to give warning to this newcomer to not come back."

Honeypaw frowned lightly, though he knew better than to argue Closesky's point. He didn't know who to be angry with, whether it be Ashrock for starting this whole mess, Cedarstar for refusing to finish this mess, or Coalpaw for wanting to be in the middle of all this mess. He hated feeling useless and without answers. Honeypaw clawed at the ground a bit, huffing out. "Well how long are they going to take? This is Coalpaw's future on the line! My family has had enough conflict and enough questions around us to add more to it. And they call me the stubborn one!"
"That's right!" Lightkit nodded quickly, her yellow eyes glowing with anticipation. "We'll have to go where Tumblefoot and Goldberry go when they bring back all that prey... er... where did they go again?" She hesitated, trying to remember.
Rustlepaw's fur bristled lightly, unease filling her belly at Cedarstar's words. She felt incredibly desperate to figure out this new scent that was now filling her nose with dizzying strength. Even so, Cedarstar gave her an order, and she knew she needed to focus. She nodded quickly in Cedarstar's direction. "I'm on it, Cedarstar! Please stay safe!" She turned quickly, getting her bearings in order and making sure she was in the right direction, before she began to navigate her way back to camp.

Closesky shrugged. "Stubbornness is the disease of my family, Honeypaw. I'm stubborn, my father was stubborn, my grandmother was stubborn, and I heard stories of how stubborn my great grandfather was. Unfortunately, Cedarstar and Ashrock are just as stubborn as the rest of my family. It may take them a while to get over their differences, but one thing I know they'll be able to agree on is Coalpaw. As long as Coalpaw is getting better and passes his warrior assessment like you and the other apprentices, there will be no denying his capability as a warrior--no matter who trained him."
"The carrionplace," Longkit informed. He held his head up. "I heard it's much different from the rest of the forest. There are twoleg stuff there and rats! Lots of rats!"
Cedarstar watched his apprentice go until he was sure she would be alright. He tilted his ears back and refocused on the new scent. He'd follow after it to see if he could get a glimpse of what caused it--or at least find where it entered the territory. He wouldn't engage until the patrol arrived. Cedarstar slipped into a stalking crouch and slunk after the scent.

Honeypaw listened with a light scowl, though he finally softened ever so slightly and released a sigh. “I suppose, as long as he passes, it will have been worth it. I just…” His gaze steeled a bit as he glanced to the side. “I don’t like being in the middle of other cats’ conflicts. Even more so, seeing Coalpaw or Crystalpaw caught in the middle of other cats’ conflicts. They’re far too gentle to deny any inclusion. Coalpaw cares alot for Ashrock. I just worry how far that care might take him, and make him reckless.” Honeypaw didn’t want to admit that not having answers or feeling in control of things frightened him, and he hid it behind his cool reservation. He glanced once at Whorlpaw. “What do you think?” “Oh yeah! Great idea!” Lightkit exclaimed, recalling how her mother had described that place. “Mama said the fire messed it up alot, but now it’s starting to look normal again. It’s gotta be impossible to miss.” She glanced around quickly. “We have to be real sneaky.” Rustlepaw tracked her way back towards the camp, paws shaking as the smell of that new scent stung in her mind. Something about it made her fur prickle with unease. She perked up as soon as the scents of her clanmates grew stronger.

Whorlpaw blinked back at Honeypaw, her head tilted in thought. "I think my father doesn't hold grudges on apprentices trying to learn. Closesky wasn't thrill about Cedarstar having Cliffheart as his mentor, but look how it turned out?" She smiled softly at the elder and Closesky nodded in agreement.
"I never wanted Cedarstar to be taught by some outsider," Closesky sighed softly at the memories. "But Cliffheart has more loyalty in him than some cats around here. He ended up being the perfect mentor for Cedarstar. It just took me a while to see it."
"And Cedarstar will see the same thing for Coalpaw, eventually." Whorlpaw smiled back at Honeypaw. "Adults always think they know what's best, but in the end--when it comes to training--we apprentices know who we work best with. My father typically comes around, Honeypaw. It may seem like Coalpaw out to get himself in trouble, but I trust my father. He puts apprentices above pride."
"Shouldn't be too hard." Longkit stood up to survey the camp and who was watching. "Not many members of the Clan notice us anyway."
(Rustlepaw could probably find any senior warrior. Doesn't have to be Cloudscar if Fire can't get on.)

For a moment, he felt that familiar pang of envy in his chest for how well Whorlpaw and Closesky could read their family. Sometimes he felt as if he would never truly know his own father so deeply. All the secrets and all the pain that still lingered, all from Goldberry’s seemingly cursed blood. Coalpaw seemed so happy, even with a cat who had tried to sabotage his own brother. Crystalpaw was always so optimistic. Cardinalblaze and Raccoonmask, they seemed so far away, could he even call them siblings without bringing up so many sins? Honeypaw harshly shoved the thoughts away. This was no time to be bitter, or moping. “Fine.” He sighed, though he gave Whorlpaw a look of assurance. “I’ll put my trust in your intuition. He is your father, after all.” “Maybe it’s because we’re too sneaky.” Lightkit offered, though deep down she knew she was trying to be optimistic. Deep down, she knew that she wanted to be respected like the other cats in the clan. She looked at the camp wall, trying to see the best route to sneak out. Rustlepaw rushed into camp, breath coming in light gasps. She couldn’t look around for help, but she could certainly scent for it. Cloudscar was probably busy, but she could scent some other Warriors. There, she scented Kinkfire, knowing the she-cat was very dependable. That, and being Cedarstar’s sister, surely she would have to listen. She followed her scent, calling out quickly. “Ah, Kinkfire?

He rolled his eyes, though his voice held no venom. “Well, I trust cats who have some sense in their brain instead of bees. You’re not a new apprentice with a bushy tail, anyway. So that’s good enough, for now.” “Good spotting!” Lightkit whispered, scampering carefully towards the hole and looking around quickly. She motioned with her tail once the coast was clear. Rustlepaw swiveled her head towards Kinkfire’s voice, padding in her direction and mewing quickly. “I picked up an odd scent on our training patrol. Cedarstar is still out there inspecting it, but he told me to come and get a patrol out. I… it’s not a good scent. It smelled like fox, but not fox. Something I’d never scented before…”

Whorlpaw lightly tossed her eyes. "Oh how relieved I am to meet your standards, Honeypaw."
Longkit followed his sister's signal. "I'll go first and try to pave the way. My fur shouldn't snag as much as yours. Keep an eye out so we're not followed."
Kinkfire furrowed her brow. That didn't sound good. "And Cedarstar's out there alone?" She rolled her eyes. Why was she not surprised? She stuck her head in the warrior's den. "Stormcloud, Lynxdapple, and Shortcloud, immediate patrol! Let's go!"
