“He fell in some brambles.” Jaggedfang sighed, looking at his friend’s legs as he mewed wearily. “Maybe it’s an infection? Do you have any herbs that help with that?” He asked Quietpaw.

Birchtail giggled as she took the hits, her friend's paws battering her harmlessly. She fell again as Swanflight lunged, and playfully nipped her shoulder in response. She shoved her friend off and panted between giggles. Leaf litter covered her coat, but the reeds were thankfully undisturbed by the scuffle. "You're just too nice," she said teasingly. "And now we both look like we went diving in mud. Though I suppose that's more my fault than yours." Swanflight rose to her paws, her white fur now soaked with dark mud and water, though she didn't seem to mind much. She simply scampered towards the nearby stream, slipping smoothly into the water and letting it run over her, cleaning the mud away. She glanced back at her friend and grinned breathlessly. "Thankfully, there's plenty of places to wash the mud off around our territory. Koishade and Iciclestep hated playing in the mud, but Salmonsplash and I liked to try and get them messy on purpose." She snickered. Birchtail flopped into the water, watching as plumes of muck lifted from her fur. She shook out the worst of the cold water and stretched out her limbs on the shore. “And I bet they had your tails for it,” she laughed, just imagining Koishade and Iciclestep coated in mud. “Let me guess, something something, ‘true warriors wouldn’t waste their time playing games’?” Her fur itched at the thought. “Makes me want to play a prank on them myself.” Approaching the reeds more calmly, she picked up her bundle again to head toward camp.

You got that down perfectly, you sounded exactly like them!” Swanflight cackled, swimming around in a circle as she sighed with delight. “I have hope that we’ll actually have a great leafbare. After that horrible fire, we’ve been so lucky now. And if it snows, we can keep fish in the snow piles to eat later!” She reminded, recalling the clever trick the older Warriors knew to make sure all prey was never wasted during the coldest moons.

After a short while had passed and no sign of the Prey Mauler surfaced, Alder straightened. He reached further into the tree, where a faint gleam of moonlight reflected some cobwebs. He bundled them and plastered them to his own pelt, then scurried back to the tunnel. Now, not only Prey Mauler scent, but blood scent carried on the dank air. Holding his breath, he silently slipped forward, keeping an ear out for the sound of scrabbling paws or throaty growls. Nothing. He delved deeper, back to the chamber with every sense straining. And yet, when the passage opened to reveal Earthstar clamboring to his feet in an empty, bloodied room, he couldn't contain his surprise. Alder sprang forward, worry overwhelming him. "Earthstar?" He approached the tom's sides, sniffing for wounds. If he could just find out where it was worst, maybe they could make it out quickly. But as he examined, he found the wounds had healed. Nine lives indeed. "Are you alright?" He finally thought to ask, once his triage was complete. "Do you need help walking? We have to get out of here before that... that thing comes back." "Alder! Thank StarClan you're all right!" Earthstar exclaimed, relief flooding through every inch of his body. Rosefrost was right - she spoke as if he had many moons ahead of him. Resolve glowing in his green eyes, he shook his head. "We can't leave yet. We're already here, and I spoke with StarClan when..." he trailed off for a moment, eyeing the other tom knowingly. Alder had now witnessed him die and return to life. This was the right time for him to speak with StarClan himself. "I'll stand guard. You need to touch your nose to the Moonstone. I trust that everything will become clear."

"If the river's even half as full, we'll have nothing to worry about," Birchtail purred. "Snow piles are a great idea, I never would've thought about that. Although I can't say digging in the snow sounds great for the paws." She shivered at the thought. The water was already cold enough, and leafbare hadn't even hit yet. "I wonder if the other clans have tricks like that for keeping their prey fresh."

We never really try it on land prey, since we eat it or hardly ever catch it as much in leafbare." Swanflight mused curiously, interested now in indeed how the other Clans might keep prey fresh in leafbare. She snickered. "You're telling me you don't have fur between your toes to keep your pads warm like Fluffcloud does?" She teased.

Thinking it over, his mouth closed and he grimly nodded. The Prey Mauler wouldn't think there was any prey to be found here, anymore. He took in a steadying breath and slowly peeled his attention away from Earthstar and toward the Moonstone. He wrapped his tail nervously around his body and gently pressed his nose to the cold surface. A weariness overcame him swiftly, and even though his body tried to fight it, he found himself drifting into a dream-filled sleep. He entered into a starry plane, a river running beneath his paws and a strange peace entering his heart. Alder glanced around Starclan's domain silently for any sight of cats, hardly daring to breathe. An overwhelming, relaxing presence overcame him. "H-hello?" He called quietly, unsure of what the next steps were.

"If I had fur like Fluffcloud, I wouldn't have to worry about leafbare. If I were leader, she'd be on permanent snow-digging duty," she joked. The words were purely in jest - she respected her clanmate dearly, but it certainly must be easier for Fluffcloud than others to take care of such a task. "Although, I'm not so sure I'd want to be her come greenleaf. I wonder how she manages to keep cool." The question itched at her. Had she seen the warrior take on more riverside duties to keep cool in the hotter moons? She wasn't sure. Or maybe Diamondheart had taken care of assigning his daughter to cooler places? Whatever the case, the thought left her musing about her clanmates individual strengths.

I’m jealous, I hate thistles in my fur.”
