Sheeppaw was rooting around in the reeds fringing the camp, his paws numb from the icy water that pooled there. He looked up as Rosemist approached, not-so-subtly eyeing up the fat fish she carried.
"Well, howdy there, Rosemist!" he called out. "Tha's a mighty fine fish ya caught!"

Rosemist slowed her trot down to a walk. She flicked her ears in acknowledgement at the apprentice, but couldn't talk due to the large fish in her jaws. She almost decided not to stop, but changed her mind after some thought. Setting down the fish, she licked her lips before speaking. "I'll share it with you, if you want." Barely more than an apprentice herself, Rosemist always felt like everyone deserved a break every now and then.

Birchtail stepped forward, grabbing some reeds in her mouth and starting to drag them back. “Let’s go then! Last one back to camp’s a rotten fish!” She rushed as quickly as she could back, not even pausing to check how far behind her her friend was. “Oi! You never said it was a race!” Swanflight called, quickly and messily grasping her reeds in her jaws before she dashed quickly after her best friend. She darted through a clump of grass, nearly sneezing as a frond tickled her nose. The burst of laughter she let out slowed her for a heartbeat and she felt Swanflight gaining on her. Her ears flicked forward and she put a little more power in her step, only for her reeds to get caught in the underbrush and yanked out from under her. She let out a little cry and whirled to recollect them, but lost her lead in the process.

Alder’s short fur puffed out, and he took a half-step back from the creature. Suddenly, the moonlight aligned with the cave roof overhead, and the stone they’d come to see lit with a dazzling light. The creature cringed back, blinking and Alder shot a look at the leader. “Run?” Earthstar immediately unsheathed his claws and turned sharply to Alder. "Run! Whatever happens, you must live!" The creature made its move, snapping at Earthstar with its large jaws. He moved quicker than the injured Prey Mauler, slashing at its muzzle. The Prey Mauler yipped in pain. The leader felt a flicker of hope as it stumbled backward on its paws, blood dripping from the slash. But the pain of the wound seemed to only incite the Prey Mauler further. Its eyes flashed in rage in the glow of the Moonstone, and it lunged at Earthstar with newfound strength. Earthstar's eyes widened in dread. Now he understood why the other Clans feared these creatures so much, if they traveled in packs and were this strong even while injured. He scored another blow on its face, but it grabbed hold of the tom and bit down harshly, lifting and shaking his body wildly. Earthstar yowled in pain as the Prey Mauler tore his fur and flesh, throwing him down to the cold stone floor. He stared numbly at the Moonstone from where he was thrown, limp and consumed by pain. He willed himself to try to move, to do anything to save Alder, but he could feel his consciousness slipping away as he bled. No..! Not when we were so close! The pain subsided and everything went dark. (I'm really sorry about my inactivity... I understand if you want to leave the RP. I definitely haven't been giving it justice recently. Alder can get his full medicine cat name during this plot - Earthstar will wake up in StarClan and think he's getting attacked/killed, but he can either drive it off somehow or it can leave on its own. Then, when Earth wakes up, they can touch the Moonstone and go from there.) ( mintleaf2 if you want to have Alder react to Earth dying! He'll talk to someone in StarClan and then come back)

Quietpaw grumbled as he went up to Jaggedfang. Surely a warrior could handle a simple itch on his leg. It wasn't like he was dying or anything. But by all means come bother him! He sighed. "An itch? I need you to be more specific." An itch on the legs didn't give him much to go by. It could be practically anything at that point. He stepped aside, giving them space to fully come in. "Come in." “He’s got scratches and marks running up his legs, probably from his blunder into the river from a branch he told me about.” Jaggedfang mewed pointedly, looking at Reedleaf and sighing. “They’re puffy and red. I know that’s not normal, he’s too stubborn to come here himself, so I had to drag him.” He looked at Quietpaw and dipped his head. “Can you take a look?” Reedleaf meanwhile was mid scratch on his scarred forepaws again looking at Jaggedfang with a look that says ‘Did you have to tell him what happened you could have just said I tripped and had a incident’ before going back to scratching and saying “This stupid itch is everywhere even in my existing scars it won’t go away” Reedleaf kept scratching not noticing the skin of his scars on his forepaws looking super inflamed and red clearly to itchy to notice

As the scent of blood filled the air, Alder's hackles raised in horror. He stood stunned for a moment, eyes filled with horror as the Prey Mauler tore into the clan's leader, then raised a growl at him. He wanted to fight, to help, to do anything to stop the blood flowing from Earthstar's broken fur. But fear acted for him and he bolted, up through the darkness and the tunnel he'd stepped through before, imagining hot breath on his heels at every twist and turn. Too late, he realized that strange scent had been that of a prey mauler. Alder panted for breath as he hurtled through the open passageway. He swiftly checked to see if the monstrous creature was following, but as the heavy air turned fresh, he realized it had stayed behind. Alder gulped down mouthfuls of air, not quite caught up to the moment. Earthstar was dead. He had to be. How could a cat survive... that? And if Earthstar was gone, he gulped, then that was it for him. How could he possibly return to Riverclan after their leader's passing? How could he break the news to them? What sort of medicine cat would run and not try to save his leader? He glanced back at the small tunnel. It had to be too late - far too late by now. Even if Earthstar had - A thought struck him, and his orange ear flicked. Nine lives. He had yet to see it for himself, but the clan had assured Alder of their ancestor's power, and of the nine lives of their leader. If it was true - and if Earthstar wasn't on his last life, then maybe, maybe there was hope. Alder still skittered away from the entrance, finding a spindly tree growing out of the rocks and climbing it to get a little distance. If the reports and the name 'Prey Mauler' meant anything, it was likely the beast hunted for sport - to destroy rather than consume. And if Earthstar could return... then maybe there was something Alder could do. The tunnel they had taken was rather narrow - it was possible the Prey Mauler couldn't fit through it. If he just waited, then maybe there was a chance he could drag Earthstar to safety. Bind his wounds and hope he healed. He just had to wait a while, see if the prey mauler would leave on its own. So he hunkered down into the tree, pressing his short pelt into the limb and digging his claws into the bark. He would wait a short while, long enough for the Prey Mauler to think him long gone, and try the only thing he dared.

Swanflight gasped and laughed at the same time as Birchtail fell into a stumble in the underbrush. Birchtail feigned a slowness and a dizziness, as though the tumble had dazed her, before tackling her unsuspecting friend. "Who's laughing now?" She crowed, batting at her friend with sheathed paws. She couldn't help her own laughter - the leaves had been kicked up in her fall and the dirt smearing her pelt was awfully dramatic for such a clumsy fall.

I'm feeling much better about it now, things got a little overwhelming in my personal life but things have calmed down and I think I still have the time and interest in this! Sorry for the scare! But also I do love that idea! Exciting that Specklecreek is returning, both for the rp and the drama. It'll also give Alder a feeling of does he have a true place here and I think there's fun conflict there. Especially if Quietpaw loves Specklecreek more and not knowing how Specklecreek will feel about Alder being like a replacement.)

Earthstar groaned as he came to, expecting to feel nothing but the burning agony of his wounds from the Prey Mauler, only to realize with a bolt of recognition that he felt nothing but a sense of dull peace. He scrambled to his paws with ease.
The RiverClan leader stood in a quiet meadow; his ears picked up a faint breeze along with the sound of a stream nearby. But this didn't look like any place he knew in Clan territory, which meant...
"No," Earthstar growled, flattening his ears. This was somewhere in StarClan. The Prey Mauler had killed him - and it was likely attacking Alder as he stood in the peaceful afterlife. "I- I don't have time to be standing here!" he challenged with a moment of hesitation. Who was awaiting him? "I need to go back..."

Who was awaiting him? "I need to go back..." "Of course you will." A sparkling breeze passed by the brown tom as the outline of a cat slowly appeared before the leader. In the stream-washed meadow, a ginger and black she-cat with frosty blue eyes gazed at the leader with a sense of empathy and determination. Rosefrost approached her dear friend, the cat she had once had feelings for many, many moons before she had given her heart to Phantomspots. She swished her tail. "You're losing a life. But it won't be the last one. And another one can be avoided thanks to your friend." She referred to Alder with a whisper of promise. "He's a good one. Riverclan needs him, and they'll need you too. You will receive more healing soon than you can imagine, and those lost to you will return, sooner than you think. Steel your courage, Earthstar. Starclan is always watching." She mewed cryptically.

"He's still alive?" Earthstar repeated with relief before he could consider the weight of her reassurance. His spirit form's fur flattened slightly. "I'm happy to hear that, but he can't have much time left on his own." The leader shuffled his paws anxiously. Those lost to you will return? Who was Rosefrost talking about? "Oh, Rosefrost, how I wish we could catch up now. I'd ask what you mean by your message, but I already know I won't get a clear answer." he sighed.

Rosefrost mewed, though her eyes betrayed her love and hope, not so much for Earthstar alone, but because she knew her daughter was coming back home. "Take care of him, and of her, and they will care for all of the Clan. Together. Wake up, Earthstar. Alder needs you, and Starclan will welcome him when he's ready." She promised, padding forwards to press her muzzle to her former leader's shoulder, warm and rejuvenating as the life he lost seemed to seep out of him and towards her side, before floating away. "Wake up."

Earthstar began to feel his consciousness slipping away once more as the details of the meadow began to blur together. Rosefrost's form remained clear as she pressed her muzzle to his shoulder, and despite the grief he felt every time he saw one of his former Clanmates in StarClan, the fact that her message was oddly optimistic filled him with resolve. He watched his lost life part with himself, fascinated. StarClan has truly blessed me with five more lives among the four I have already lost. "Until next time, Rosefrost," Earthstar purred as everything went dark once again - but this time to return to the living.
And this time, the sharp breath Earthstar took as he returned to life was an instant reminder of his returning mortality. He opened his eyes to the opaque glow of the Moonstone and the sharp tang of blood and Prey Mauler scent combined. Gathering his bearings, he saw the Prey Mauler - the same one as before, with the injured leg - pawing curiously at the Moonstone itself. The sight filled the tom with rage, but the creature was unaware of his revival and, after sniffing around the base of it, it snorted and headed for the entrance of the tunnel.
A blessing in disguise, Earthstar thought. He knew he stood no chance against it, even with his wounds healed. But where was Alder? Judging by Rosefrost's words, he must've escaped. If he could find him, and bring him back to the Moonstone... then he could meet StarClan and finish what they had set out to do.
Making sure the Prey Mauler had no intention of coming back, Earthstar stood and shook out his pelt. He tried not to dwell on the blood marking the cavern floor. Where are you, Alder? I'll find you and bring you back here. You can't have gone far...

"Great catch, Rosemist!" Rosemist finished her portion of the large fish, licking her lips and grooming her paws. Waving her tail at Sheeppaw, she turned and trotted into camp.
"'Bye, Rosemist!" Sheeppaw called around a mouthful of fish. "What a nice molly," he commented to himself. He finished the fish, noting that the Clan had been fed so it was fine. Belly comfortably full, he took the bones away before passing down to the gravelly shore, staring up the river to where it snaked away to the gorge. Pondering his life now, he thought back to the barn. He missed his companions there, but he loved life by the River and under the Stars. He flicked one ear, wondering how long he could go shirking his training with Turtlefrost. He'd been here for a few moons now, but he hadn't progressed as much as an apprentice usually should. He was a fine hunter, sure, but he had no fighter's instinct. He'd rather stay in the camp and care for their dens and the queens, elders, and kittens directly, but that didn't seem to be how the warrior life worked. He continued to gaze at the River.

Leaf litter covered her coat, but the reeds were thankfully undisturbed by the scuffle. "You're just too nice," she said teasingly. "And now we both look like we went diving in mud. Though I suppose that's more my fault than yours."

After a short while had passed and no sign of the Prey Mauler surfaced, Alder straightened. He reached further into the tree, where a faint gleam of moonlight reflected some cobwebs. He bundled them and plastered them to his own pelt, then scurried back to the tunnel. Now, not only Prey Mauler scent, but blood scent carried on the dank air. Holding his breath, he silently slipped forward, keeping an ear out for the sound of scrabbling paws or throaty growls.
Nothing.
He delved deeper, back to the chamber with every sense straining. And yet, when the passage opened to reveal Earthstar clamboring to his feet in an empty, bloodied room, he couldn't contain his surprise. Alder sprang forward, worry overwhelming him. "Earthstar?"
He approached the tom's sides, sniffing for wounds. If he could just find out where it was worst, maybe they could make it out quickly. But as he examined, he found the wounds had healed. Nine lives indeed.
"Are you alright?" He finally thought to ask, once his triage was complete. "Do you need help walking? We have to get out of here before that... that thing comes back."

She simply scampered towards the nearby stream, slipping smoothly into the water and letting it run over her, cleaning the mud away. She glanced back at her friend and grinned breathlessly. "Thankfully, there's plenty of places to wash the mud off around our territory. Koishade and Iciclestep hated playing in the mud, but Salmonsplash and I liked to try and get them messy on purpose." She snickered.

Quietpaw groaned. Were all warriors this clumsy? Seriously, they always get hurt in the most ridiculous ways possibly. He glared at Reedleaf. "Stop itching them. It might make it worse." The apprentice made his way over to the warrior. He crouched down to examine his legs further. In all honesty, his mind went blank. He had no idea what was happening. Maybe it was some sort of virus in the water? Or an allergic reaction to something? "I'm gonna be honest," he breathed, "I've got no idea what's wrong." (What's wrong with Reedleaf? Cause I actually have no idea. All my medicine cat knowledge is gone right now. 😭)
