"I don't think it did" she meowed as she poked at it. "I'm going to start the fresh-kill pile!" Hazelkit announced as she bounded to the center of the den, placing the dead spider on the ground. Hazelkit held her tail high. Rosekit scampered after her, looking around for more beetles to add to their pile. He puffed. “I can’t find another one! That can’t be the only beetle left, can it?” "I don't know. Maybe we can ask a warrior if they have seen-" Hazelkit was cut off by Littleshadow. Kitting!? Hazelkit looked at Rosekit, unsure of what they should do. |

Alder’s ears pricked to attention and the jovial air about him faded to seriousness. “Have you assisted in a kitting before?”
Looking at what the apprentice had grabbed, he turned back to the wall of herbs and sniffed around for a moment to find what he’d come for. Carefully grabbing a poppy head so as to not shake out any of the seeds, he followed the apprentice out into the clearing.
He gently set down the poppy and turned to Smogstorm, “The nursery’s going to be a bit crowded, and it might make Littleshadow uncomfortable. Would you be able to coordinate keeping the other kits away for now?”

With a grateful nod, Alder picked up the poppy and approached the nursery. He ducked his head in and placed the herb at his feet to call softly, “Littleshadow? It’s Quietpaw and Alder, may we come in?”

She hobbled on her three good legs, purring. “When they come, I want you to be gentle with them. They won’t be able to play for a little while.” |

Littleshadow hissed as another contraction rippled through, "Yes, please come in!" she called to the medicine cats. The queen looked up at Owlwhisker her face betraying her excitement and fear. They were going to be parents! (I have two kits in the litter, I think Blazer might too. mintleaf2 🅃🄴🄼🄿🄾 ) Minnowtail nudged Songkit, Greykit and Viperkit out of the nursery to give the kitting queen space, encouraging the kits to go play in the reeds on the outskirts of the camp. Songkit and Viperkit tumbled off easily, the kits eager to get out of the stuffy den. |

Owlwhisker slipped quickly to Littleshadow’s side, paws bouncing with anxiousness and excitement. “Okay! It’s time, right? Oh, this is really happening! Okay, uh.” He clumsily patted her shoulder with his paw. “I’m right here, anything you need, I can totally get it!”

(Thanks! I was gonna ask  Gonna do this post then give Tempo some time to reply!) Alder stepped around the cats leaving the den and waved his tail at the two huddled together. He set the poppy head down to the side, not intending to need it unless Littleshadow experienced any excessive pain or inability to sleep after the kitting. Better to have it handy than not, he thought. “Littleshadow, Owlwhisker, congratulations! Are you two ready?” He greeted warmly, approaching. He sat in front of the queen, making enough space for Quietpaw to sit beside him. “May I?” He asked, gesturing with his paw to touch her belly. |

Littleshadow nodded too focused on her breathing to reply with words. She shifted backward in the nest toward Owlwhisker to allow Alder and Quietpaw to take a better look at her stomach. The contractions were coming quicker now, giving her barely a few moments of rest.

Alder reached out to feel the contractions, then pressed gently to get an idea of where the kits were. Judging he had enough time to briefly teach, he gestured with his tail for Quietpaw to approach.
“If you want to put your paw here, you can get an idea of when the kits will arrive. Make a note of the time between contractions, and if you press gently, you can feel the kits coming. Should be soon.”
Then to Littleshadow he said confidently, “You’re doing great, everything seems to be proceeding smoothly Just deep breaths in, long breaths out, alright?”

Littleshadow gave Alder a shaky smile, “Right. Deep breaths.” Littleshadow relaxed as she took a deep breath in, sinking deeper into the nest before exhaling. The pain had eased slightly as she focused on something else. Her claws still dug through the moss though when the next contraction hit. The first kit surely on the way.

Owlwhisker stuck close to Littleshadow, cheering her on with a purr. “You can do it, Littleshadow! You’re the bravest cat I know. Our kits are gonna be perfect, I just know it. Breathe good and deep.” He ran his long tail gently along her back to soothe her.

Alder frowned as Quietpaw shrunk away, but forced a neutral expression. Hopefully some time would help the gap between them.
As the queen’s belly gave a ripple, he focused back on the kitting. “Alright, here comes the first one. Quietpaw, do you want to bring her that stick you brought?”
(Want to give you the opportunity to describe the new kits as they come!)

When Littlemoon had begun her kitting, Sheeppaw had darted over to the nursery right away. Oh, how desperately he wished he could be inside the den helping! But here in the Clans, that duty fell to the medicine cats; it wasn't like the farm at all.

Deadpath sheepishly cleared his throat. "If...if they're anything like dogs, then...well they shouldn't like water. Right?" He nudged the fish to her. "Here. You can have the first bite." Shellstream gave Deadpath a questioning look, but went ahead and pulled the fish toward her to take a bite. "That sounds right. The other Clans don't have a natural defense like we do. Unless they dislike the ShadowClan marshes just as much, but that doesn't seem to be the case..." she pondered, pushing the fish back to him. |

Stormclaw ducked underneath Diamondheart and swiped his hind legs using swift paws. "Then, you'll have to hold your enemy down, because if they escape, your effort would've been for nothing." Stormclaw nodded at Diamondheart and nugded him up. "Why don't you two try it?" He looked over to where the two apprentices were standing.
