Nightflame looked up as Brookheart approached her after she left the medicine den. “I told Puddlepaw that he wasn’t ready for deep fishing just yet. He decided that he was and went to the river without me to teach himself.” She explained “I caught up to him just as a current managed to sweep him off. I had to go and drag him out.” “Of course I will, Orchidnight.” Thawfrost said, stopping to look his mate in the eyes. “I will always protect you and our kits. You are what is important to me, so I will never let anything happen to any of you.” He promised her. "Great Starclan." Brookheart sighed, looking both relieved and disgruntled. The thought of losing Puddlepaw filled him with terror, but it was clear that Nightflame had been there just in time. "Thank you, Nightflame. Puddlepaw has become so impulsive as of late, and he seems to think he has something to prove, but I'm not sure what, or why. I will go speak with him. Hopefully Earthstar will give him a fitting punishment for disobeying you." He released a breath. "Thank you for pulling him out. I can't repay you enough." "Good. I can't bear the thought of them living without me, or you." Orchidnight admitted, praying that the kits would come without any harm to them or to her. "I love you, Thawfrost."

"That's more like it." Jaggedfang nodded firmly, before he waded quickly towards his apprentice and mewed with a deep command. "Quickly! Bite down hard, and finish it off before it can slip its way away. Whatever you do, do not let your stance be thrown off." He spoke sternly, yet there was an undertone of pride at how good of a hunter Ashpaw seemed to be. Ashpawthe river with Jaggedfang
The tom bit down hard at his mentor's command, and the fish had stopped thrashing. Ashpaw had felt himself slipping a little, though he kept himself steady as he felt the flow of the current around him. He smiled eagerly, turning to his mentor with the large fish clasped in his jaws. "It almost had me." He chuckled with his mouth full. "It almost did. But you pulled through." Jaggedfang nodded, approval in his eyes as he inspected the catch. "That will feed plenty of cats. Well done, Ashpaw, truly. You've impressed me." He admitted, eyes gleaming with a twinge of pride.

The tom let out a rare smile as his gaze shifted over to his apprentice. "That's quite alright, rather perfect actually." The tom said, striding forward. "I was hoping we could head down to the river for a hunt anyways." He chuckled, rather thankful for his apprentice's eagerness. "Spot anything?" He asked. Snailpaw nodded enthusiastically. “Yeah! I saw a really colorful fish. It was kind of orange, like my fur, but white too!” Hawkeyecamp with Snailpaw (🐌 Snailtail 🐌)
Hawkeye once more let out a raspy chuckle. "Hopefully we can catch some." He said. "Let's get going, shall we?" The tom said as he began leading the way to the river.

This must have been why Mistfall and the other senior Warriors loved mentoring so much. "I think with your two catches, we should be fine to head back and drop them off. Prey is running so well that we don't want to overhunt. We can do some battle training near camp after that." He offered.

Glacierpaw almost wanted to flatten his ears at Foxripple's praise. It was too many compliments for him, someone who just wanted to be seen as an ordinary RiverClan cat. "Th-thanks," he breathed, raising his head. He wouldn't disrespect his mentor by moping. "I'll remember that. Really." His eyes hardened with focus. "What's next?" Winterfrost nodded in approval. Her granddaughter spoke wisely and she was proud of that. Earthstar turned to look back at the two she-cats with a shake of his head. "No scent yet," he reported. "Let's continue along to the border." “Okay.” Foxripple nodded as they approached closer to one of the many streams that led to the river. The water here was deep enough to emulate most instances where fighting in water would be common, but shallow enough to start training the young apprentice in combat. “We’ve already started on your basic moves. Now, we can start training to switch from fighting in water to fighting on land. Knowing both gives us an edge in a fight on our territory.” Fluffcloud nodded to her leader, watching him for a few moments before she cleared her thoughts. According to Adderstar and Robinstar, Earthstar had fled Riverclan in the days of Adderclan, and had joined those rebelling against them. Starclan had chosen him, or so they all said. She didn’t feel much trust in Starclan always deciding who was worthy and who was not. It felt unfair, really, to know others were favored more by Starclan. Glacierpaw followed Foxripple and fluffed out his fur when the stream grew closer. He knew the water would likely be cold today, so he mentally prepared himself for what was to come. "That's why we almost never get attacked in camp, right?" he asked, remembering Earthstar say something about that. "The other Clans fear water." Earthstar approached the ThunderClan border and made sure to remark the borders beyond Sunningrocks. He was pleased that ThunderClan hadn't appeared to try and subtly shift the borders. "No trouble from ThunderClan today," he called. Winterfrost swished her tail as she stared beyond Sunningrocks into ThunderClan territory. Hornetstrike and his family were in there somewhere, living an entirely different life than her and Diamondheart's. She hoped for his sake that Sunningrocks remained where it was - there would be no need for a fight then. She turned to Fluffcloud. "Have you ever battled over these rocks?"

"Well, they certainly don't like swimming. I guess that could be considered fear." Foxripple teased, before he walked along the bank, enjoying the sensation of water against his paws. "They'd flop around like fish if they tried to attack us in our own camp." He decided. "So, yeah, that's why." Fluffcloud stared across at Sunningrocks. She thought of how her father had led the patrol to take Sunningrocks. Frostmoon had tried to lead a patrol to defend them, but she had been taken down with ease. Fluffcloud still felt a sting of pity for her cousin. Diamondheart had seemingly no trouble fighting his kin. Unifying the clans would end the battles over these rocks. She hid her thoughts with a short nod. "I have. I was an apprentice though." She flicked her tail and marked the border, before mewing. "I think it's all good here, Earthstar, no trouble scented."

He strode into the water carefully, digging his paws into the bank. "We'll start with some of the smaller fish." He instructed. "Use your paws to secure your position within the current." He said carefully. "I don't want you to get swept away." He chuckled.

Glacierpaw looked amused at the idea of cats floundering in the water. "That makes sense. I'm glad to be a RiverClan cat." he said. "I can't imagine being vulnerable in another camp."
"Everything seems clear here. We can start heading back to camp." Earthstar ordered, satisfied with how the patrol had gone. He was surprised at the lack of ThunderClan's presence, but he wasn't complaining. There were more important things on his mind than Sunningrocks.
Winterfrost nodded, wondering if Fluffcloud faced her kin in the battle she participated in. She decided not to press further at Earthstar's call. "At least we won't have to face anyone today." she mewed, moving to follow Earthstar.

Fluffcloud nodded quickly, wanting to return to camp to speak with Eelshock. She had an idea, one that Adderstar and Robinstar surely would like. But, she wanted to run it by her closest friend first.

The tom couldn't help but let out a raspy chuckle as he observed his apprentice. "That's alright." He said reassuringly. "Try to keep steady, that way the fish won't thrash around as much." He instructed. The tom himself had become rather rusty when it came to hunting, so he decided to attempt to catch a fish as well. The tom strode further into the river, his coat becoming drenched. He outstretched his paws, unsheathing his claws and awaiting the fish swimming downstream. He snatched a fish from the water, biting into it quickly to finish the job. "Sort of like that." He said in a bit of a joking manner, as his form was far from perfect.

"Right," Glacierpaw agreed, remembering how charred the grass was near camp after the fire... and how destroyed the land for the other Clans was. The smell of smoke was something he wasn't likely to forget. "We were blessed that day, weren't we?"
Earthstar pushed through the reeds back into camp with the border patrol behind him.
Winterfrost flicked her tail to Fluffcloud, imagining that her granddaughter wanted to do something else now that the patrol was over.

Winterfrost flicked her tail to Fluffcloud, imagining that her granddaughter wanted to do something else now that the patrol was over. "We were. Even though we lost brave Clanmates, they helped slow down the spread of the fire, and I truly believe that they saved our territory from full destruction." Foxripple nodded, surprisingly serious for his usually playful persona. "Starclan truly had their paws around us. That's got to mean we did something right." Fluffcloud looked at her grandmother and admitted lightly. "Do you suppose maybe one day you could show me the kinds of techniques you'd use to fight? I want to learn about as many ways of life as I can... it's a part of who I am, with all this different blood in me." Brookheart had entered the medicine den as soon as he had finished hearing from Nightflame, his voice rich with relief that his son was okay, but sharp with sternness as he scolded the younger tom. "You disobeyed Nightflame when she specifically told you not to enter the river without her present. Not even the most senior of Warriors would go in deep waters alone, let alone with how cold the water is right now." "I caught a fish." The argumentative anger in Puddlepaw from before seemed to fade now into a pleading desperation. He could handle Nightflame being disappointed, but his father? Surely Brookheart would have been so proud had he managed to bring that fish back. "I did everything I learned, and then some! I didn't mean for the current to change so fast..." "What would have happened had she not been there?" Brookheart demanded, his eyes flickering with a deep sadness at the thought. "You could have drowned, we could have lost you. I could have lost you, my son. There is no honor in pride that clouds your judgement. Puddlepaw, you had nothing to prove to disobey your mentor. You need to take responsibility for your actions, and you are lucky that Earthstar is a cat who loves you as deeply as I, your mother, and Nightflame do too." He took a small breath, before sighing gently to calm himself. Puddlepaw cowered a bit, eyes averted as he felt his father's words blow harshly within him. His pelt burned with shame as he realized many of their clanmates had begun to look over at the medicine den, able to hear the senior Warrior's scolding. He suddenly felt hollow, not sure if it was anger or sadness that made his skin prickle then.

Nightflame spotted Earthstar return to camp and started towards him when Brookheart went into the Medicine Den. "Earthstar." She mewed in greeting, dipping her head.
Airpaw had noticed her brother and Nightflame return to camp, and saw how bedraggled Puddlepaw looked as well. She flicked her ear, wondering what could have happened. "What's going on?" "I don't know, but it sounds like Puddlepaw is in trouble." She said, looking back at Stormpaw.

Nightflame mad is scary, I sure don't want to mess with her. Looks like he fell into water or something, his pelt was soaked." Mintpaw, who had mozied over towards the older apprentices, stopped and spoke as soon as she overheard them. "I hope he's okay! I've never heard Brookheart sound like that before..." She tried to listen to what was going on in the medicine den as best as she could, always a tad nosy.

Glacierpaw was quiet for a moment. "I hope so... I don't want StarClan to be angry with us..." he admitted, thinking of the stories his parents told him and his brother. Stories of Earthstar fleeing for ThunderClan, of his uncle thrusting the Clan into darkness from its very core. If StarClan grew angry, could they strike them down with the force of nature?
Winterfrost looked slightly surprised. Some of the moves the former loner knew were likely not taught in the Clans; moves that were too dangerous to risk trying. However, Fluffcloud's words made sense, and they could be an asset to her granddaughter. "Perhaps," she mewed in response. "I must warn you that some of them are not moves that Clan cats use to fight. They can cause grievous injuries." she explained. "Is that something that would bother you?"

"Did something happen?" “I can’t think of anything we’ve done to deserve punishment that badly. Even then, we’ve got such steady leadership and dedication to eachother. We can overcome anything.” Foxripple assured with leisure, before he focused again. “Alright. Let’s get started, remember the battle stance we practiced the other day?” “A Warrior does not kill.” Fluffcloud recited the words, though she felt conflicted, remembering Adderstar and Robinstar’s extensive critiques of the Code. If last resort, she knew she would have to kill to protect her Clan if needed. So, she nodded simply and mewed. “If we ever face a threat, like rouges, I’d feel better knowing how they think and fight. I won’t need to use it, but I may as well know it just in case.”

Nightflame glanced back at the medicine den before turning to Earthstar as she started to explain what had happened, “Puddlepaw decided to take his training upon himself when I refused to show him some advanced training I felt he wasn’t ready for. He was deep water fishing when the current pulled him off course, I had to drag him back out.” She said, flicking her ear. Perhaps Brookheart and Earthstar could manage to make her apprentice see how serious the situation had been. It had seemed like nothing she had said got through to Puddlepaw.
Airpaw waved her tail in greeting to Mintpaw, “It’s probably his own fault.” She said nonchalantly. Although she had felt worried for her brother, she had seen that he looked unscathed and mostly like a drowned rat than a RiverClan apprentice. “Puddlepaw probably did something stupid and reckless. Everyone has seen how arrogant he’s become.” She added.
Stormpaw gave Mintpaw a friendly smile before looking back at his sister, “Come on, don’t say that. Puddlepaw’s just eager to learn, that’s all.” He said.

“He seemed to do really well when we all trained together.” Mintpaw admitted, liking to see the positives of everyone, but she was able to recognize Airpaw’s viewpoint too. “He does seem like he likes to show off, though. I guess it would be worse if he was like. Really bad at it.” She admitted. “I just hope he doesn’t get sick, I bet that water was super cold.”

Mousepaw camp, medicine den The apprentice carefully arranged herbs, trotting back and forth through the den. She paced quietly, curious as to what to do with herself. She decided she would rest once she was done, and finished the last of her tasks. She curled up to rest, and dreamt of herself trotting through a meadow.

Puddlepaw glanced over at Mousepaw, still stung from Brookheart’s scolding even though now his father was quickly and warmly grooming his fur from all the river water. He felt guilty that Specklecreek and Mousepaw had to waste herbs on him, especially when he knew he’d recover just fine. For a moment, he envied Mousepaw, that she could speak with Starclan and was special enough to be accepted in such a high rank. It seemed no matter how hard he tried, he would never amount past a normal Warrior. Certainly not even that if Nightflame kept him from increasing his training, which he knew she surely would not now after what happened. Puddlepaw sulked, already dreading what Earthstar could punish him with.

Earthstar's ears caught wind of the arguing between Brookheart and Puddlepaw in the medicine cat den, and he greeted Nightflame quickly. I won’t need to use it, but I may as well know it just in case.” Glacierpaw stayed silent at that. From what Earthstar and Frostlake had told him about AdderClan, there seemed to be plenty of reasons for StarClan to punish them. Something kept him from voicing this concern, though, and he merely gave a determined nod. "That's right. I remember the underwater leg sweep, I think... I might need to try it again." Winterfrost looked satisfied with that answer. "Rogues can be unpredictable. It's always a good thing to think ahead." she mewed. "In that case, I can start to teach you sometime when you are free and willing."

Earthstar listened carefully and shook his head when Nightflame was done explaining the situation. Young apprentices, he sighed to himself. "I'm glad you were there to save him," he said, thinking of apprentices that hadn't been so lucky in the past. "If he has been treated by the medicine cats, I can try and talk to him." he mewed, gazing past the warrior to the medicine cat den. This sounded like something that required punishment as well as advising.

Nightflame gave a nod, “Brookheart is in there now with him. The medicine cats should be done with him now.” She mewed, looking back at the medicine den as well. “I should have kept a sharper eye on him, but I didn’t think he would do something so reckless.” She added, shaking her head.

“I just hope he doesn’t get sick, I bet that water was super cold.” ”He thinks that just because Nightflame is his mentor he knows more than we do.” Airpaw said with a shrug. “I’m sure he’ll be fine. It would take more than a cold to put Puddlepaw out of commission.” She added.
