Glacierpaw relaxed a bit at the praise. "That's a relief. There's still so much to take in that I don't know if I can remember everything in time." he admitted, partly wondering if it was this hard for his parents to learn as an apprentice. He couldn't imagine Earthstar or Frostlake failing to catch a vole or fall into the river, that's for sure.
Winterfrost fluffed out her fur, her white pelt contrasting against the brown grass and reeds around them. "It may sound hard to believe, but it's just as much an adjustment as learning to rely on the Clan. When you live alone, you can go anywhere you want, hunt what you want and live on your own terms. There are drawbacks for doing so, such as if you get sick or run into the wrong cat." she explained. Rogues were everywhere in places where loners lived, and not the kind that took them in happily.

Ashpaw shivered as he embraced the flow of the water, letting the current guide him as his mentor advised. He rather valued his mentor's wisdom, and took it to heart. Ashpaw gave his mentor a nod, and a sly smile. "It's a little chilly." He shrugged. The young tom felt a fish slide across his arm, and began attempting to catch the slippery creatures. "Careful. Thrash too much and you'll scare all of the fish away for a long time." Jaggedfang called as soon as Ashpaw broke the surface after attempting to catch the prey. "You want to locate them upstream, and wait for them to find their way down to you. Fishing blind will only catch you a cold." He hummed, wading up to Ashpaw and standing still as he scanned the water. Ashpawthe river with Jaggedfang
The tom nodded, relaxing his muscles as he limited his movement and refrained from releasing any sounds. His eyes flickered as he saw a slim black figure moving towards him in the water. He lifted his paw slowly, extending it as he waited for the fish to come closer. Once the fish was within range, he unsheathed his claws and quickly swung towards the fish. He caught the slippery creature on his talons, and clamped his teeth down into its gills.

(Oh wow good timing) "Don't worry," he encouraged with a purr. "I won't let anything happen." He sat down and mimicked a swimming motion with his paws. "Go just to where the water reaches your back and try kicking like this. It might take a few tries to keep above water, but I'll be right here if you need help." His tail flicked with amusement. "I don't think your denmates have gotten a chance to swim yet. It'll make for a great story." Rainkit pricked her ears at the thought. Carefully, she waded out into the water, shivering as it hit her belly. She attempted to paddle like Slatefur had told her to, which resulted in her bobbing underwater for a moment. She resurfaced, soaking wet. She shook herself off and tried again, splashing at the water. After a couple tries, she found herself semi-gracefully kicking through the shallows. "I'm doing it!" she cried, breathless, turning in a circle to face the elder again, eyes shining. Slatefur purred encouragement. “Great job! Remember to keep your chin up.” A wave of relief went through him as he watched the kit play. His own children had always had each other to play with. He couldn’t imagine how tough things must be for her on her own. “Rainkit, I need you to promise me that you won’t go swimming alone, now. Not until your mentor allows it as an apprentice or until you’re a warrior. If you want to come to the water again, just ask me or Smokestream. Understand? It’s very important that you be careful.”

He looked down at Glacierpaw and approached his apprentice, lifting a paw to tap it right between Glacierpaw's ears, upon his head. "This up here? It's good, and it'll get you through any challenge you face. I'm your mentor, but the one who's really to credit for your success is you, you got that? Don't worry so much about remembering everything, time and drive will do that for you. I know a good one when I see it, and you Glacierpaw, you're going to be a good one." He smiled, before skipping to his paws and lifting his tail. "Onwards then! Before we lose daylight, yeah?" "Well. I think it's good, really. To learn about different ways cats can live. The better we accept our differences, the better we can turn them into strengths alongside eachother." Fluffcloud admitted to her grandmother, inspiring herself with her own words. Surely, this was what her grandparents had been striving for, before Adderclan had failed... right? She shook the thought away, before she glanced up and looked at Earthstar. "I haven't caught any scent around yet, Earthstar, do you have better luck up there?"

It was too many compliments for him, someone who just wanted to be seen as an ordinary RiverClan cat. "Th-thanks," he breathed, raising his head. He wouldn't disrespect his mentor by moping. "I'll remember that. Really." His eyes hardened with focus. "What's next?" Winterfrost nodded in approval. Her granddaughter spoke wisely and she was proud of that. Earthstar turned to look back at the two she-cats with a shake of his head. "No scent yet," he reported. "Let's continue along to the border."

However, he knew that was merely a silly thought. Though he felt rather connected with the water, and the life it holds within.

"Let's continue along to the border." “Okay.” Foxripple nodded as they approached closer to one of the many streams that led to the river. The water here was deep enough to emulate most instances where fighting in water would be common, but shallow enough to start training the young apprentice in combat. “We’ve already started on your basic moves. Now, we can start training to switch from fighting in water to fighting on land. Knowing both gives us an edge in a fight on our territory.” Fluffcloud nodded to her leader, watching him for a few moments before she cleared her thoughts. According to Adderstar and Robinstar, Earthstar had fled Riverclan in the days of Adderclan, and had joined those rebelling against them. Starclan had chosen him, or so they all said. She didn’t feel much trust in Starclan always deciding who was worthy and who was not. It felt unfair, really, to know others were favored more by Starclan.

Finally reaching the shore, Nightflame pulled Puddlepaw out of the water. She let go of his scruff gently and quickly started grooming his fur to warm him and to try and wake him up from his shock. Her tail lashed in annoyance, but also fear and worry. Nightflame had noticed how arrogant her apprentice had grown lately, but she hadn’t thought that he would do something so reckless! Thawfrost poked his head into the medicine den, mewing out a greeting as he padded into the den. (We can do a timeskip if you want lol) For a moment, Puddlepaw was still and silent, vision dark and blurred, before he finally heaved, coughing up water with a choked gasp. He spat out the water, shaking a bit before he heaved for breath. The terror slowly faded from his body, only to be replaced with a boiling wave of anger. That fish was perfect! It would have fed all the elders! He had it, he caught it just right! Claws extending, he cursed to himself, realizing that Nightflame had to rescue him, as if he was a helpless kit. Orchidnight slowly stepped out of the Medicine Den, heart racing as she faced Thawfrost and mewed lightly. "Well... it looks like we're having kits." Nightflame sat back once Puddlepaw started coughing up water, feeling a rush of relief that he was otherwise unharmed. She let him catch his breath for a minute before she started scolding him, “What in StarClan’s name were you thinking? I warned you that you weren’t ready for the deep fishing, you could have drowned!” She said sternly, glaring at him with a mix of anger and worry. “So it does.” Thawfrost purred, nuzzling Orchidnight as they left, “Are you okay with this?” He asked, looking over at her.

But did you see the fish I had? It was huge!” He urged. Surely she would see why he had to take that risk! “I’m okay.” Orchidnight nodded after a moment of thought. “More than okay with it, if you’re happy. I know you’ll be a great father.” She looked at Thawfrost with deep love in her eyes. “I want to do good by them, like my mother did by me.”

The bright tom nodded, picking up rather quickly what his mentor was putting down. The thought of a fish pulling him under frightened the young apprentice, though he felt he was ready to take on the challenge. "Alright." He said, wading towards the bank. Once he found a spot where he felt secure, he dug his paws into the ground below him. He steadied his position, making sure he was sturdy enough to withstand the current. He waited as smaller fish passed by, though he showed no interest. He focused on his target: a larger black silhouette nearing his position on the side of the bank. He readied himself before snapping the fish up in his jaws, though it was different than he thought. The large fish began to resist, thrashing and flailing about. However, the tom tightened his grip on the fish and kept his stance.

“Last time I was here?” She tipped her head quizzically, thinking back. “I don’t normally leave…” catching a whiff of the smell, she reeled back. “Starclan above what is that?” She also stepped toward it. The fur wasn’t anything she’d seen before. Coarse and too long to be a cat’s. Her hackles rose. Her ears flipped and her senses grew alert, despite how faint the smell was. “We need to show Earthstar. Do you think we’ll find any more of this?” Swanflight bristled, crouching low to carefully inspect the weird clump. It seemed to be fur of some kind, there was no bone, but it was far more fur than a typical clump pulled out from some cat's pelt. She looked at Birchtail and gave her a disturbed look. "I... we have to look around, but yeah, we definitely need to bring this to Earthstar. I have no idea what this scent is! How is that possible?" She quickly poked the fur and jumped back, only to slowly approach again and continue to prod it. "It's not alive. I think it's just fur from a pelt... uhm. Alot of fur." An uneasy feeling slipped through Birchtail. She cracked open her mouth to search for any hint of the scent around. Sniffing the clump a few times and walking a perimeter, eventually she caught the faintest hint of a trail. “Swanflight, over here!” She stepped a little further. “Looks like it’s headed toward Thunderclan, whatever it is.” Not daring to go any further, she slunk back to the river.

Hawkeye camp The bulking tom made his way toward the prey pile, hungrily scarfing up a large rabbit. Noticing the supply was growing rather thin, the tom decided he would go hunting. He had hoped to spot his apprentice prior to going, though he had no idea of where they'd be. He decided he would wait for a while, soaking up the sunlight as he did so.

"Quickly! Bite down hard, and finish it off before it can slip its way away. Whatever you do, do not let your stance be thrown off." He spoke sternly, yet there was an undertone of pride at how good of a hunter Ashpaw seemed to be.

Swanflight decided, fur bristling with unease as she quickly pulled the lump of fur out of the water, and tucked it safely near the bridge. "We'll keep it here so the other Warriors can see it and smell it. For now, we've got to get back to camp." She exclaimed, brushing past Birchtail and waving her tail. "Come on!"

As for the fish, you might have caught it, but did you manage to bring it back to shore with you?” She asked. She could see now how arrogant Puddlepaw had become and hoped this near death experience would teach him a lesson. “Come, let’s get back to camp and we will discuss your punishment after you get looked over by Specklecreek.” Nightflame said with a sigh, nudging her apprentice in the direction of camp. Thawfrost gave her a reassuring smile, “Don’t worry, I know you will. These kits will be well loved by the both of us.” He purred, giving her cheek a lick, “I will miss you when you’re in the nursery though.” He added, feeling a slight sadness at the thought of not being able to sleep beside her.

Puddlepaw bristled as Nightflame tried to nudge him. He glared at her, fur prickling as best as it could with how wet it was. He lashed his tail. "How could it not mean that? You're supposed to be one of the best mentors in the Clan! Your other apprentices talk all the time about all the hard training and advanced stuff you did with them!" He felt his ears fall, though his pelt warmed fiercely at her words. "Every cat slips in the river... I was going to bring that fish in, I just needed to steady myself." He stepped back, scowling at her now. "I don't need to be looked over. I'm fine! I was trying to hunt for my Clan, why should I be punished for that?" He muttered sourly. At this rate, the younger apprentices would overpass him. He felt like Nightflame didn't think he was good enough to learn advanced moves. The thought of being an embarrassment to her or the Clan made his blood boil. "That's the downside." Orchidnight sighed, not liking the idea of sleeping alone in the nursery. "Maybe I can spend some nights in the Warriors den before they come." She offered.

Nightflame scowled at her apprentice, “You’re being punished for disobeying me and going behind my back! Along with putting your life at risk!” She snapped, “What would have happened if I hadn’t been here to get you out of that current?” She lashed her tail again, feeling frustration with her apprentice. “My former apprentices didn’t start their advanced training until I felt they were ready, not when they decided they were. We’re going back to camp, and you will let Specklecreek look you over.” She said firmly, towering over him.
“Maybe. I would like that, but we’ll have to see once we get there.” Thawfrost said, “Come on, let’s go for a walk. We can enjoy the time we have now before you go join the nursery.” He suggested.

"I wouldn't go behind your back if you would just let me do more, I know I can do it! I've been winning nearly every spar, we've been doing the same easy fishing. I'm grateful that you were there, really! But I can do so much more than what we've been working on for the past moons! You won't let me!" Puddlepaw argued, though he forced himself to not cower at Nightflame's powerful stance. If he was to be as good as her, if not better one day, he couldn't be scared of anyone! "And I'm fine! Specklecreek doesn't-" Puddlepaw cut off with a few harsh coughs, letting himself settle as he felt his fur warm again. He knew he wouldn't win the argument, but he hated knowing that he had caught such a good catch and now nobody would recognize it. "That sounds wonderful." Orchidnight admitted, wanting nothing more than to just spend some time with her mate, and not think about her argument with her younger sister. She pressed close to Thawfrost and smirked. "I hope you know this doesn't mean I'll go soft or anything, so don't treat me all fragile, got it?"

“Camp. Now, Puddlepaw.” Nightflame said firmly after he finished coughing. “We stay out here too long, you’ll get sick.” She motioned for him to go, planning on following after him.
Thawfrost laughed as they left camp, “You? Fragile? I would never think such a thing.” He purred, giving her a gentle and teasing nudge. He was happy to enjoy some time alone with Orchidnight, and he hoped to get her mind off of her troubles.

Puddlepaw muttered, not wanting to admit that he felt too cold and miserable to keep arguing with Nightflame. Hot anger drove him, though it was a growing sense of shame and self-deprecation that really hit him. Everyone would surely laugh at him, or be disappointed in him for only bringing a wet burden back to camp. Starclan seemed to only ever send him bad luck, and at this point he was starting to doubt if they were even real. It wasn't like Starclan ever came to him in dreams, or ever made him feel as important as a medicine cat or leader. He rolled his eyes at the thought. He could be a great Warrior without having to bow his head to invisible cats in the clouds. "I know. That's why you're my mate, and not another cat." Orchidnight mused, looking at him with a smirk, before she nudged him back and pushed her way out of camp. "I guess it's pretty good, that we'll be having kits when Riverclan seems to be doing so well with finding prey and the territory growing back so fast."

Nightflame followed after Puddlepaw, glad that he finally started for camp. Once they reached the camp, she made sure to lead him to the medicine den and pushed him inside before following in. She didn’t want to give him the chance to sneak off without getting looked over by the medicine cat. But once she was sure Specklecreek has seen to Puddlepaw, she would go report to Earthstar what had happened.
“It’s a wonderful sign for us.” Thawfrost mewed, pressing against her as they walked, “RiverClan will be stronger with our kits, I’m sure of that.” He added with a chuckle.

Puddlepaw was scowling and muttering the entire check-over, grimacing at the herbs he had to take. He felt bad for wasting them, knowing that Specklecreek was always very nice. It would have been easier if she was stern like Nightflame, at least then he could feel justified in snapping back. He held his tongue though, not wanting to think about the kind of punishment Earthstar would give him. Brookheart had noticed Puddlepaw coming into camp, looking disheveled and sodden. He looked quizzically at Nightflame, rushing over towards her. "Did something happen out there? Is everything alright?" "Yes... it's a good thing." Orchidnight smiled, before her face fell slightly and she looked out across the reeds. "I guess this is how Rosefrost must have felt, when she was expecting me and my brothers." She missed Scalefur and Nightgaze so much, but above all she wished her mother could have met her grandkits. She felt her ears fall. "I can't lose them. Or you. Promise me that no matter what, we'll keep them safe and alive."

Nightflame looked up as Brookheart approached her after she left the medicine den. “I told Puddlepaw that he wasn’t ready for deep fishing just yet. He decided that he was and went to the river without me to teach himself.” She explained “I caught up to him just as a current managed to sweep him off. I had to go and drag him out.”
“Of course I will, Orchidnight.” Thawfrost said, stopping to look his mate in the eyes. “I will always protect you and our kits. You are what is important to me, so I will never let anything happen to any of you.” He promised her.

Snailpaw trotted up to Hawkeye eagerly. “Hey, Hawkeye! sorry I’m late, heheh. I was trying to see if there were many fish out in the river so we could hunt,” she grinned. The tom let out a rare smile as his gaze shifted over to his apprentice. "That's quite alright, rather perfect actually." The tom said, striding forward. "I was hoping we could head down to the river for a hunt anyways." He chuckled, rather thankful for his apprentice's eagerness. "Spot anything?" He asked.

Ashpawthe river with Jaggedfang
"That's more like it." Jaggedfang nodded firmly, before he waded quickly towards his apprentice and mewed with a deep command. "Quickly! Bite down hard, and finish it off before it can slip its way away. Whatever you do, do not let your stance be thrown off." He spoke sternly, yet there was an undertone of pride at how good of a hunter Ashpaw seemed to be. Ashpawthe river with Jaggedfang
The tom bit down hard at his mentor's command, and the fish had stopped thrashing. Ashpaw had felt himself slipping a little, though he kept himself steady as he felt the flow of the current around him. He smiled eagerly, turning to his mentor with the large fish clasped in his jaws. "It almost had me." He chuckled with his mouth full.

I saw a really colorful fish. It was kind of orange, like my fur, but white too!”
