Sebastian Serafin For a moment, a brief second, time stood absolutely still. Sebastian blinked his green eyes and glanced around him, somewhat surveying his surroundings. It was difficult to ignore the screeches of pain or the distinct clashing of swords all around him. It was not as if Sebastian were new to battle. He had been a pirate for most of his life now, and over that period of time, he had been exposed to bloodshed of this caliber. The sounds of a blade sinking into an opponent still haunted him, however. Sebastian was not heartless, so seeing death firsthand rattled him a bit. Especially when that death would not have happened if not for him. It was quite the heart-wrenching revelation.
Someone died because of you.
And then, time sped up again, and Sebastian continued to tightly clutch Liesel's hand as the two of them wove through the battling pirates. He needed to get Liesel to safety. After that, he could help his crew. But right now, she was the priority. That was for certain. If he decided to leave her now to fend for herself, completely defenseless and unarmed, she would probably be killed. And that was not part of the plan. She would survive this day; Sebastian would make sure of that.
When he least expected an attack was when one came. He became distinctly aware of a petite body pushing against him. He caught the reflective glint of a sword's blade just as it raked across Liesel's shoulder, and just as he lurched forward to pull her away, she began to fight back. Really, Sebastian could only stand and guard her, but he found himself a bit awe-stricken. Of course, she had told him that she would be able to defend herself. But did he really believe her? No. Not until now. But now, she had just proven her competence and ability to take care of things herself. All on her own. Perhaps she did not need a bodyguard as much as he originally thought.
A hand rested on his shoulder, and immediately, Sebastian drew his sword and whipped around, preparing to battle his new opponent. But instead of seeing a larger, stronger, unfamiliar pirate, he found himself face to face with Tobias.
"She wasn't kidding when she said she could fend for herself," Tobias observed, leaning against the wooden railing of the ship. He certainly seemed nonchalant for a captain whose crew was in the midst of getting slaughtered.
"What are you doing?" Sebastian demanded harshly, narrowing his eyes and shifting his weight from one side to the other. He would be idiotic if an attacker came and he simply stood conversing with his oblivious brother. He needed to be ready to fight.
"Oh, y'know, observing. Trying not to get killed. The usual." A soft chuckle escaped Tobias' lips, causing Sebastian's focused expression to morph and contort into a practically dumbfounded one.
He didn't have time to chat with his brother. He still needed to protect Liesel. The sound of her voice caused him to slowly turn, and his emerald gaze fell upon the girl as he took her hand again.
"No time for chit-chat," he barked, beginning to move toward the stern of the ship once more. "Time to get a move-on."
It took little time for the two of them to reach Sebastian's destination, and when he reached Tobias' quarters, he yanked open the door and hurriedly pulled Liesel inside with him before bolting the entrance shut. No one would be able to enter. No one would be able to kill them. Keeping Liesel safe was his utmost priority, and he had just achieved his goal. Tobias would be the only one who would be able to enter along with them.
The captain's quarters were a bit grander than Sebastian's, as Tobias had more of an expensive taste. A tapestry hung on the far wall, a mahogany desk sat just below the small window, and a large, mahogany bed was placed against the wall opposite the tapestry, with hand-carved detailing. It was a large and beautifully-decorated room, whereas Sebastian's was simpler and much more functional.
This was where they would be awaiting the end of battle. It was not that Sebastian was a coward, not by any means. He just had been instructed by his brother to watch over the girl, no matter what happened. And Sebastian was not one to ignore his captain's orders.

liesel wailes //
Liesel gave Tobias a perplexed look, blue eyes quickly looking him up and down. She found it a little unnerving how relaxed he was, as if this kind of thing was a normal occurrence. Which it probably was, considering that they were pirates, and that's what pirates did. They stole and were stolen from, plaguing the seas like rats. She was sure that Tobias had seen all this before, and maybe he was just confident that his crew would win, or perhaps he really didn't care. After all, he could just replace them all when the ship docked at the next port. It was obvious that Sebastian didn't share the nonchalance, and it was apparent that he wasn't exactly enjoying the fight. This made things much more difficult for Liesel, because she couldn't think of him as an emotionless monster when he was trying to shield her from the fighting, and by god it would be so much simpler if she could.
They were moving again, and all around there was raw violence. Sebastian was shuffling her towards safety, and Liesel tried not to look back. She kept her eyes straight ahead, blinking against the early morning sun. Her hand was still tightly gripping the sword she had stolen, blood was smeared across it's blade in dark crimson streaks. It weighed heavy in her hand.
Upon reaching Tobias's quarters, Liesel felt a sense a relief as the door was securely bolted behind them, but still she couldn't consider herself safe. Would she ever be? If Liesel's shoulder wasn't bleeding out, and if there weren't people dying on the other side of the heavy wood door, maybe she could have noticed the exotic beauty of the lavish tapestry and mahogany furniture, but she barely processed any of it at all.
"Shouldn't you be out there?" She gave Sebastian a curious glance. It was odd how the man seemed to have attached himself to her hip at all times, as if he was her personal guard. "Or both of us? I thought I handled myself just fine, and I really do not wish to be locked in a room all the time, I'm not helpless. With little more experience I'm sure I could fight just as good as..." She stopped talking when she realized what she had been saying, or more so nervously babbling, and frankly she wished it hadn't been spoken. Talking about learning to fight - was she crazy? What she should have been doing was demanding to go home. But she hadn't. That disturbed her, because that meant she was adjusting to her new life.

Sebastian Serafin
Upon hearing Liesel’s words, Sebastian could not help but chuckle. No longer did the girl complain of his hostility or her homesickness. Rather, she wanted to immerse herself in battle. Strange? Yes. To be honest, it was pretty much the last thing that the pirate expected Liesel to articulate. Not that he was complaining. If she wanted him to teach her to fight, he gladly would. It would likely prove beneficial for Liesel to have some skill and technique in terms of defending herself.
His green eyes lifted to meet her pale, blue gaze, and surprisingly, his normally sharp and even intimidating stare softened. Maybe for the first time since they met. Suddenly, it seemed as if he were looking at her like she was an actual human being, and not just his hostage.
He moved to pick up a wet cloth from the bucket of water that sat just beneath Tobias’ desk, then he returned his attention to Liesel once more. Her wound would need to be cleaned, and since he assumed that she had not cleaned a wound of this caliber previously, he decided that in that moment, he would simply do it for her.
He knelt on the bed in front of her, and his emerald eyes narrowed as he concentrated. Meeting her eyes once more, he raised an eyebrow as he began to softly move her sleeve off of her shoulder. He was still a gentleman, even if he also happened to be a pirate, and he felt as if he needed her permission.
Gently, he touched the cool rag to her skin just below the wound, and he began to wipe away the blood that had run down her arm. His touch was soft, almost delicate, and he slowly cleaned the deep slice in her shoulder.
“We’ll need to get you some clean clothes,” he murmured softly, his voice low in both pitch and volume.
Again, his eyebrows furrowed in concentration, and when needed, he rinsed the rag in the bucket of water that sat a couple of yards away.

liesel wailes //
It was strange really, how Sebastian's demeanor softened, Liesel first noticed it in his eyes when he looked at her. But the biggest shock was when he started to clean her wound, which was something she hadn't expected at all. He was being nice, which she hadn't exactly thought he was capable of. It caused her to be momentarily at a loss for words, leaving her completely speechless. But she didn't protest, even when he started to pull her sleeve down to get a better look at the injury, she stayed completely silent and still. The wound stung when the rag made contact with the damaged skin, but still she did not move - not the slightest flinch.
Sebastian's presence was almost soothing, and in a way it managed to calm Liesel's nerves. She liked how he didn't try fill the time with a meaningless conversation, but rather chose to stay silent. Like her. She felt horrible for letting her guard down, which she was guiltily doing by letting him help her, in a way it made her feel as if she was somehow betraying her family by trusting him. This made her feel so terribly torn, so much that it made her feel exhausted from just thinking about it.
It was easier to focus on the way Sebastian's eyebrows furrowed when he concentrated, or his profile when he wasn't looking at her. She didn't think of it as staring, just simply letting her gaze rest on his face. It was peculiar that she barely realized that she was doing this at all, only when he spoke.
"That would be nice." Her voice was somewhat distant, as she thought about how she was still in her nightgown from the other night. Liesel would a appreciate a change of clothes, preferably men's clothing - considering that her new lifestyle demanded a more moveable wardrobe. "Thank you." She murmured in a hushed tone, mostly because she couldn't believe that she was thanking Sebastian. What had the world come to?
"I can do it now." She took the rag from him without making eye-contact, her expression once again unreadable as she pressed the cloth to her wound. Whenever Liesel felt any type of discomfort, big or small, it usually caused her to become withdrawn. And at that moment she felt incredibly homesick, despite the comfort she had felt not long before. The peace was only temporary.
[ sorry this is messy ]
