sebastian serafin - ♥ holy crap this is bad. i kept getting distracted by modern family. gosh darn it. Sebastian just..couldn't tear his gaze away from her. Maybe he hadn't noticed her beauty before, as perhaps he had been much too distracted by their abundant situations of life and death, but now? Now, she was absolutely radiant. Her beauty differed from that of other women. Like, Katarina was stunning as well, but in more of a sultry and seductive way. And Liesel was..well. She exuded a sort of ladylike innocence. Something that separated her from everyone else. But honestly, that was not the most attractive thing about her. No. Rather, it was her spunk. Her willingness to stand up for the things in which she believed. And Sebastian had kind of seen an evolution of Liesel Wailes. She came into his life as a rather timid girl, but now, now she was a brave, strong young woman. And frankly, this impressed the young man greatly.
Now, when he spotted her coy little grin, Sebastian could only roll his green eyes in a bit of a teasing fashion. He knew that she was only playing with him, and frankly, he welcomed it. He always had been one to enjoy these sorts of little games. And perhaps that was why Katarina had been so alluring to him, in the first place. Because she specialized in toying with his mind. Honestly, Sebastian was finding that he, like Tobias, enjoyed a bit of a challenge. And Liesel certainly gave that to him. She was spunky and intelligent and witty. And she kept him on his toes.
"You," he confirmed with a slightly-raised eyebrow. A sly smirk took its place within his chiseled features, and after a moment, a light chuckle escaped his lips.
But rather quickly, upon hearing Liesel's next remark, that laughter and that lightness disintegrated into something much more..solemn. And almost suspenseful. It was no secret that they lived a dangerous life, and something, realistically, could happen to either one of them. He could die. She could get hurt. They could get captured again. That was the essence of a pirate's life. Danger lurked menacingly in every nook and cranny.
"If something happened to either of us," he began slowly, lifting his eyes to meet hers once again, "I..I don't know what would happen. But I know that I can protect you. And I know that you are perfectly capable of protecting yourself. So..I just have to believe that everything will be okay. And that everything will work out exactly the way it's supposed to."
Were these the most comforting words? Probably not. But frankly, he didn't really know what else he could say to soothe her mind. So he said nothing more. And instead, he softly grasped her hand within his own, lacing their fingers together in a gesture of reassurance.

annika whitlon //
Her crew had been held captive for fourteen days. She remembered because everyday she scratched a mark in the heel of her boot, every time she saw the sunlight fading from the water damaged stairs. It was the only light they'd seen in days, small slivers that slipped down from the opening in the early hours of morning and faded away at night. And like the food that was thrown out to them, they greedily savored every bit of it, managing to stay alive a little longer.
(annika didn't eat for four days, and it went unnoticed by their captors for awhile, and her crew didn't say anything because they understood what she was feeling -- they had enough respect to not say a word. but eventually a few guards of the ship noticed that when they retrieved her plate it was only pushed around, not touched. this was considered retaliation and they wouldn't just let her starve; oh no. they held her down and forced the bland substances down her throats until she swallowed it, cramming more and more until she later emptied the contents of her stomach in the corner of the cell.)
She stayed blank, proud and stubborn, refusing to answer questions when asked. Annika was a captain, and even though they'd been attacked and all of her crew (save for five) had been mercilessly murdered, she was still the one they looked up to. One might think it strange, a woman being in charge of a ship full of men, but she'd earned that authority (ever since she faced off in a duel against their previous captain and killed him, there was no doubt who was fit to take his place).
It was really an unlucky turn of events, mostly because they weren't the desired target for the attack. The ship was obviously not that of a pirate's, but they had enough numbers to take Annika's vessel by surprise and overpower them with muskets and a craftily planned advance. But they were soon to find, after they were done slaying everyone in their path, that what they were searching for wasn't there at all.
They were on the hunt for a woman by the name of Liesel Wailes. Supposedly her father was the one running the expedition, claiming that she was stolen away by ruthless pirates who deserved all the worst punishments that the world could offer them. It was an elaborate story, really it was, but Annika found herself exhausted from hearing it told repeatedly; and she'd learned not to say anything about it.
(she'd learned her lesson when they'd first been brought aboard, she'd always been known for her sharp tongue so it was no surprise that she had said: "if your daughter has been missing this long then she's either at the bottom of the sea, or she's become a pirate herself." this, of course, resulted in the butt of a gun being smashed against the side of her head; leaving a sore reminder not to speak out negatively about finding the missing lass.)
Life was dim, especially since their fate was quite obvious; it was to be the gallows for them. Her anger was enough to stay determined, enough to assure her crew that she had a plan -- even when that was a lie.
But it seemed a time for a plan was upon them.
She knew a fight was about to begin, you could always tell. It was like an energy in the air, a static. A silence before the storm. There also hadn't been a meal sent out to them that day, as if that was forgotten while in the haste preparing for something else.
"Our chance is coming boys, I can sense it." She wrapped her fingers around the bars that divided her from the rest of the prisoners -- all five of them -- her voice but a raspy whisper. Their heads raised at her words, that old gleam that was so very familiar returning to light up their eyes. They were ready; as was she.
They had to wait another few hours, which was incredibly tedious and painful. Annika did not believe in allowing herself to hope, it left people vulnerable and comforted by the thought that something would save them, she believed in surviving without it.
So, when the guard came down to check on them and walked a little too close, her crew was ready to grab at him; one hand slapping over his mouth and the other around his neck, giving the others enough time to snatch his keys and toss them through the bars to Annika. It was smooth, as if rehearsed, and on perfect time. She could hear shouts on board; they had found the real ship they were looking for, and the fight had just begun.
Once they were all free, she signaled for one of her men to knock the guard unconscious -- which he did -- then put a finger to her lips whilst pulling a pistol from the waist of her pants, a sly grin spreading across her features. She'd somehow managed to keep it hidden when all their weapons were confiscated. There was only one bullet left, but if she was patient enough to save it -- and who knows, it might become the most important shot.
It had been a long time since they'd been out in the open air, the sunlight blinded Annika's eyes momentarily. They managed to stay unnoticed; everyone else too busy trying to board the other ship.
Green eyes alert and shoulders squared with determination, she flicked back one of her red braids. "We need to get aboard that ship."
"What?" They looked at her like she was insane. And maybe it was crazy, stupid even, but wasn't it better than staying put where they were?
"Get ready to jump!" Annika didn't wait to see if they'd follow, she didn't look back because she knew they would. A streak of red hair and dark clothes, she jumped overboard, bracing herself for the cold.
(but nothing could have prepared her for the feeling; like multiple daggers were piercing her flesh, stinging and burning like fire. waves pushing and pulling, threatening to yank her back under the surface. but when she looked over her shoulder -- she wasn't the only one who jumped.)

liesel wailes // --
It was easier to relax upon hearing Sebastian's soothing words, enough to blink her eyes closed and let out a light sigh. Whatever happened to them, wether it was good or bad, if they could just managed to stick together everything would be alright.
(liesel wanted so desperately to believe this.)
Everything seemed just fine at that moment; quiet and peaceful. The silence made her drowsy, comfortable, enough to just let herself keep repeating inwardly: there's nothing to worry about. But that was a lie, and she knew it, just something to hold onto like Sebastian's hand reassuring her jumpy nerves that everything was okay -- it was always going to be okay.
But it wasn't.
She heard the shouts distantly, like a familiar tune that was always there in the back of your mind, making it hard to be surprised when you heard it. Liesel's eyes did open though, wide and blue, and a fragment of a smile was left on her lips as if to say here we go again.
Would the chaos ever stop?
When she let go of his hand it was hesitantly, as if she would rather stay there forever -- pretending that the world around them didn't exist. (but she had to get up, had to move towards the corner of the room where her sword was propped up against the wall, had to sling the belt over her shoulder and unsheathe the weapon; this was her life now.)
"I'm not sure what's going on out there--" She chewed her lip for a split second, "But we're in this together, yeah?"

sebastian serafin - ♥ wowowow pointless rambling comes to a head w this post. golly gee. Everything was exactly as it should be. For the first time in a long time, everything seemed to be rather..serene. It was as if Liesel and Sebastian could take the time that they had been given to simply take a step back, take a deep breath, and actually relax. And perhaps they would be able to get to know one another a bit better, as well. Of course, Sebastian knew Liesel. He was not about to just sit there and say that she was a complete stranger. He did know her, but he wanted to know her better. He wanted to see a side of her that differed from what he had previously seen. Sebastian had only known Liesel to be incredibly strong. But now, he could sense that there was another side to her. A side which expressed even a hint of vulnerability. And who knew? Maybe he would be able to convince her to let her guard down. Even a little.
And really, all he wanted was happiness. He wanted the two of them to truly be happy. (and that didn’t necessarily mean that they needed to be happy with one another..but he still wanted to see if that was even an option. and since things seemed oddly peaceful, perhaps now would be a good time to explore that possibility.)
(well. he thought that until he heard the utter chaos outside. shouts of anguish and sounds of blades clashing filled sebastian’s ears, and frankly, his first instinct was to lock the door to his chambers, keeping the two of them safe. but of course, he knew that this was not an option. once again, sebastian and liesel would be forced into yet another battle.)
Sebastian returned his attention to Liesel once more, and lightly, the young man squeezed her hand. And when she chose to let go, he watched as she took her weapon. Sebastian knew that he should be doing the same, that he should be preparing for battle, but honestly, his motivation just..wasn’t there. He didn’t feel as if he needed to say anything in return, so he chose to simply nod, and he reached for his sheathed sword, fastening it to his belt.
”You ready?” he asked in almost a whisper.
He didn’t exactly give her an opportunity to respond, for as soon as he opened the door of his chambers, utter mayhem engulfed him. Immediately, he began defending himself against a burly..soldier? This was no pirate. This was not a crew of neanderthals looking to seize Sebastian’s ship. No. Rather, they appeared to carry an air of..of almost regality. What could these people possibly want with his crew?
And then it hit him. And his attention returned to Liesel.
Liesel.
They would want Liesel.

liesel wailes // -- They would not fight her. They would not fight her.
It was evident in the way they only deflected her blows, backing up and giving her space, careful not to advance in anyway; their movements were so painstakingly obvious.
But they were fighting Sebastian.
It was like attacking a wall, pushing and slashing forward against something solid that just held it's ground. They didn't fight like her either; they fought smooth and composed; almost dignified. Their technique seemed as if it was rehearsed over and over again until it was the same every time.
You could see the frustration on Liesel's face, having been offended. "Fight me! Come on!" She lunged forward at a tall soldier, a shout bursting from her lips. But you could see the discomfort on his face, which was surprisingly youthful, and when he spoke she could hear the strain in his voice.
"Miss -- I can't do that it would be... unethical." he gave her a scrutinizing look, leaning a few inches closer, "And besides, you're safe now, your father is here to take you home."
Despite the chaos that was circling around them like a tornado, she heard nothing but the soldiers words. They blossomed a warm feeling inside her chest, a feeling of relief. Her father had found her -- he was alright. Everything was going to be fine...
No it wasn't.
"No," she shook her head violently, air no longer filling her burning lungs, "I can't go -- you don't understand!" She pushed away, much to the young man's surprise. She could hear his voice calling to her, but it was distant and warped by the sounds of everything else.
Everything seemed to move in slow motion; her surroundings, and herself. She had no sense of direction, she was blinded by bodies and weapons. By clothes and hats. By faces. She was trying to break through it, searching for that break in the crowd -- but she didn't make it. Arms wrapped around her waist, strong and firm as they pulled her backwards and away from her escape path. But she stilled managed to call out, hoping that her plea would be heard.
"Sebastian!"

sebastian serafin - ♥ this is almost too much. even for me. and i live for the angst. prepare urself for a buttload of tears. The fighting..it almost seemed to completely engulf Sebastian. And it wasn't like a normal battle, either. No. He didn’t feel like he was adequately prepared to face these opponents, which was a rarity for a pirate of Sebastian’s caliber. In his peripheral vision, for a while, Sebastian managed to keep an eye on Liesel. And she seemed to be handling herself well, as far as he could tell. But that didn’t surprise him in the least. He knew that she would be able to handle herself.
But then, more soldiers began to advance. And just like that, he could no longer see Liesel.
But really, that only inspired him to fight a bit harder to protect her. He needed to save her — especially now that he was really beginning to feel things for her. Was it love he felt? Perhaps. He couldn’t imagine losing her. Not now, not when they had so many things which they still needed to discuss. He wanted her in his life — that was the bottom line — and he was not about to lose her.
But clearly, someone did not feel the same way. Someone wanted to rip her away from him, just as he had done to her family. How tragically poetic.
Her anguish-filled cry reached his ears, and for a moment, his heart stopped.
No. No.
He whipped around, not bothering to finish dealing with his current opponents, and he raced through the crowd in the direction of Liesel’s strained pleas.
”Liesel!” he screeched. ”I’m coming!”
Apparently, his attackers had..well. They had another plan in mind. Even as Sebastian continued to chase Liesel’s new captor, his original attackers pursued him. However, with the chaos that surrounded him, the young man did not pay quite as close attention to these men who were after him. All of his attention was focused on Liesel.
He felt the blade enter his back just as he was beginning to think that he truly was going to get Liesel back. He could see her clearly, and he knew that she could see her.
And oh, how he wished she couldn’t.
A guttural, blood-curdling groan escaped Sebastian’s lips as his attacker’s sword drove itself deep into Sebastian’s ribcage. Sheer pain enveloped his entire being, and his eyes became glassy. Almost blank. All he could think about was the feeling of the sword, the feeling which a stranger had inflicted upon him. And for what reason? ..He didn’t have the brainpower to analyze his opponent’s motives.
It was as if time slowed down. It did not seem to quite stand still, but things now seemed to operate much more slowly. And Sebastian found himself much more aware of his surroundings. The clashing of iron upon iron. The agonized yelps of fallen crewmates. Victorious yowls of unfamiliar men. It all became..heightened.
And slowly, Sebastian slunk to the ground, first dropping to his knees, then flopping quite ungracefully onto his side with a grunt. His vision began to blur, only slightly, and he found himself wondering if..if this was what death felt like. Was this how all of the people he had killed felt just as they died?
He didn’t know. And frankly, he didn’t want to know.
He remembered Tobias, and honestly, out of everyone who could possibly see him in this state, Sebastian found himself almost grateful to know that his brother wasn’t there. He didn’t want to burden the captain with the task of watching his only family die. And frankly, Sebastian knew that this would be the end. This was it, and there was no way to stop it. The sooner he came to peace with his untimely fate, the better.
But..Liesel.
Now was just as good a time as any to decipher his feelings for her, right? After all, when would he have another opportunity?
“Liesel.”
Feebly, he called to her. He knew that she likely would be unable to hear his cry over the mayhem that surrounded them, but he could only hope that she would.

Reaching, stretching, grasping -- at nothing but empty air. Fingers closing against each other; oh how Liesel wished for a hand to touch her's, some warmth in the dark space. But arms were squeezing just below her ribcage, lacing tightly around her torso like a boa constrictor about it's prey. As they were restraining her, they were also pulling her backwards, forcing her feet to scuff against the deck's floor.
She wanted nothing more to see him, to hear him -- and maybe her wish was granted because there Sebastian was, pushing forth from the crowd; looking at her and her only. In that brief moment her face softened, and she was even foolish enough to think: everything will be alright as long as we are together, and we are together. A sweet truth she wanted so much to cling to, a crutch that she was just starting to lean all her weight on --
and then it happened.
She saw his face first, twisting and contorting into something else, something so horribly familiar that she felt all the air forced from her already emptying lungs -- a final blow that caused her to crumple, the only thing keeping her upright being the soldier holding on to her. It felt as if that blade had been forced through her flesh also, cold and sharp against her skin. Her scream was agonized, filled with such anguish that she was sure that anyone in that proximity would not be able to ignore the sound, such a painful cry that could be mistaken for nothing but that.
Her outstretched arms never reached him, even when she was scrambling madly forward, incoherent cries bursting from her lips and tears raging forth in torrents down her cheeks, as she repeated the only thing that she could manage to shove forth: no.
(liesel felt the agony under her skin, she felt it inside her chest like a bird scrambling and beating itself against the cage which kept it prisoner, she felt it clawing up her throat sharp and bitter leaving her voice hoarse and weak. her body felt hollowed out, like everything inside was being suffocated as she watched sebastian fall, leaving her empty. empty. empty.)
The sun felt like fire, the wind felt like frost, and the deck swayed beneath her feet as if the world was spinning around and around on the verge of toppling over completely. Spiraling violently out of control -- like her.
And she wished she'd hadn't heard it, wished she'd only seen his lips move as they formed her name, prayed to anyone -- anything -- that she wouldn't hear the sound of those words whispered like this, never like this. But they reached her ears, almost whisked away, ripped from her like everything else she was losing.
Let me go too.
Her eyes were closed against it all, she couldn't bear the sight, and she couldn't bear to be left behind. She wanted to come with him, wherever he was going she wanted to go too. Even now.
"Liesel!" A voice said her name again, but it was relieved -- light. But the sound only evoked more torment, because she knew who's it was.
Her eyes were dull and unfocused when her gaze landed on her father; like what she was seeing wasn't really there, as if she didn't recognize the man standing before her.
"It's me, you're safe now." His voice is gentle, quiet, assured.
But I was already safe...
The soldier holding her made the mistake of letting go, something that was easy to do considering her weakened condition, but that was all she needed. It was still slow motion when she stood -- the speed of everything around her that is, the edges of her vision blurring with it like water on ink. Her fingers curled around the hilt of her sword, it was cold. She lifted it from the ground, smooth, slow but quick. Tears mixing with sweat, eyes burning, breathe hitching as she forced it inside her lungs. (and there was no doubt about what she was going to do, if you really truly looked her in the face and stared -- you would know. you would know even before she thrust her sword forward into a unsuspecting soldiers stomach, before she twisted it further and watched him fall. before she brought the blade down upon him a second time. you would know, because you would see that she remembered; she remembered exactly who had done this to sebastian.)
(when she looked down upon the stranger, lifeless at her feet -- she did not look away. the blood was on her hands, but it was also on his.)
"Please look at me," Liesel's voice was strained as she dropped down beside Sebastian, lifting his head gently and leaning over his body as if to serve as a shield. Choking out raspy sobs, hunched forward no longer attempting to shake him by the shoulder. The smallest of whispers was all she could manage, a feeble attempt spoken with three simple words:
"I love you."
