liesel wailes //
There was silence after Sebastian spoke, mostly because Liesel was too shocked to formulate a response. It struck her like a blow to the face that question did, so out of the blue. Their parents knew each other? Is that why his last name seemed so familiar? Why didn't she remember him? Had they met?
She felt paralyzed. Not sure whether to be angry with Sebastian for not telling her sooner, or to be... what? How was she suppose to feel?
"No." Liesel responded slowly while shaking her head, as if maybe her answer was false and she did in fact know; but there wasn't any memories that said otherwise. It bewildered her as to why he hadn't told her sooner, why he had kept it to himself. Did Tobias know? So many unanswered questions.
Lifting her gaze to meet his green eyes, Liesel tried not to be accusing. "Why didn't you tell me?" She could tell that he was nervous, and possibly upset, by the way he trembled slightly.
It wasn't his fault. Maybe he just couldn't bring himself to tell her, or maybe he didn't realize at first. Liesel knew she had to stop judging him, it wasn't fair to assume anything until he explained. Surely Sebastian had a logical explanation.
Right?

sebastian serafin -- Liesel's mere expression shifted drastically after Sebastian bombarded her with arguably the most unforeseen piece of information shared between the two of them. And in all honesty, he should not have expected anything less. If their roles were reversed, he likely would have felt a bit..betrayed, to say the least. He should have told her sooner; that, he recognized. But at least he had been able to muster the courage necessary to tell her now, right? Better now than later?
The man's lips slightly parted as he attempted to think of something he could say, something that would make all of this better. He found himself yearning for things to go back to the way they once were, with Liesel in a state of blissful ignorance. Would bringing up the topic of Katarina help Liesel to move forward? (Well, in this case, backward, since it was before he had inundated her with this information that she seemed rather engrossed in her rage.)
No. Reminding Liesel of yet another person whom she could not trust would not help her through this situation.
He needed to be honest. Completely and unconditionally honest.
"I didn't tell you because..well..I thought there was a chance that you already knew," Sebastian began, raking a hand through his dark hair before meeting her gaze almost timidly. "I thought..maybe your father told you about my family. Since they were all quite good friends, if I recall correctly."
The realization that Liesel didn't truly know a thing about his past caused Sebastian to feel a bit sorrowful, surprisingly. His hope had been that she had been told just as many positive things about him as he had been told about her. But alas, that was not the case. So much for that inkling of desire. Now, he would be truly forced to shift her opinion of him, which he could only assume to be negative. After all, he was her captor, and it was solely because of him that she had been ripped away from the only family she had ever known.
Did she trust him? Would she ever be able to trust him again, if she ever had in the first place?
To those questions, Sebastian did not know the answers. He could only wish that Liesel decided that, because he now chose to come forward with the truth, that she would see him as worthy of her trust.

liesel wailes //
Now there is a difference between lying and simply withholding information, but in this instance Liesel wasn't so sure there was. She couldn't help but feel slightly as if she had been deceived. Had Sebastian known all the while who she was? Even when he kidnapped her?
Liesel tried to swallow, but couldn't. Her voice was uncertain. "I didn't know." She found her breath hitching in her throat as she tried to breath, the very thought that she may have known of Sebastian before this was almost too overwhelming. Her eyes blinked closed for a brief moment as she squeezed them shut, a hand raising to touch her temple. "Why didn't I know they were friends before? Did we meet in person?" Her eyes flew back open as the question were blurted forth. Her expression still that of disbelief.
Why was it that she could almost recall Sebastian's name, but couldn't remember any solid memories concerning it? She'd always helped her father with work, especially after her mother died - she had heard quite a lot of names. Could it be that she had in fact known all along, but just wasn't able to properly identify what was so familiar about everything? It was very likely that she simply hadn't payed attention to what her father was up to enough; after all, he had mentioned several times of "friends" he met in the business; maybe she hadn't listened closely, or perhaps at the time she really hadn't cared.
"You could have told me you know." Liesel let out a sigh, reaching over to hesitantly place her hand on Sebastian's arm. She understood that he assumed she might have already known, but it still would have nice to have a little more insight, instead of being left in the dark for a notable amount of time.
"Can I ask you something?" She let her hand drop from his arm as her voice became more serious. "Why did you kidnap me that night? You took everything of worth - did you think I would be able to identify you or...? What did you get out of it?"

sebastian serafin -- Sebastian took a moment to think about what he was going to say before he responded to her many questions. They certainly were all valid, and each deserved a completely candid answer. But what could he possibly say? That he didn't recognize her, or her house, or really anything about her at all until he heard her say her name? Well, it was the truth. So perhaps there was where he was to begin his explanation.
"I..um," he stammered, narrowing his eyes slightly as he tilted his head upward. He needed a way to word what he needed to say, that was obvious. "I..don't know why your father failed to tell you. And yes, I believe we did meet. Tobias knows more, as he was older than I. So. I really don't know all that much about whether or not we spent time together as children..?"
But I think that we did. I'm almost positive, Liesel.
Almost.
As her next inquiry was asked, Sebastian allowed his eyes to close as he inhaled deeply. Could he really have told her? Maybe. Maybe not. It was all speculation now. It did not truly matter one way or another. He had not told her. Not until now. And did he regret that decision? No. Not particularly. It likely would have been far more overwhelming had he told her sooner.
His somewhat-glazed-over gaze returned to hers as Liesel continued to speak. Sebastian seemed rather..emotionless. Withdrawn. It was almost as if he didn't seem to care, but Liesel must have known that this was not the case. If it were, why tell her at all? If he truly did not care about her, why give her any insight?
The fact that he chose to relay this information to her proved that he simply was not a heartless pirate. On the contrary, perhaps it proved the opposite.
"I didn't know who you were until you told me your name," he admitted, his voice barely peaking above that of a whisper. "And, to be quite honest," he paused, taking a moment to lightly chew upon his lower lip anxiously, "I don't really know why I decided to take you with me. It just..happened to occur that way."

liesel wailes //
However strange it was that she could not recall meeting Sebastian or his brother, she figured that it wasn't unlikely that they did - at some point - meet in their lives. But, if Tobias was older and supposedly knew more about this - why didn't he say anything. Liesel was still somewhat bewildered as to why it had been kept a secret when obviously she hadn't known.
There was something else that was even more strange, something that made her eyebrows furrow as she pondered it. "If your family was friends with mine, then that means you weren't always a pirate... am I right?" Her eyes widened at the realization she'd come across, something she could have caught onto sooner. "What happened? I mean... how?" Was she mistaken in her assumption? Had he always been a pirate? Certainly his family wasn't, because it was a well known fact that her father wouldn't associate with people like that - especially after her mother died. His friends were all wealthy merchants like them, so did that mean...?
Liesel took a deep breath, letting it fill her air-deprived lungs. "Care to take a walk?" She took a step towards the door with a questioning look. She needed to move her legs, to set foot on actual land. Maybe then she could figure things out better, they both could.
Liesel needed to make a decision. It was clear that things were changing, Sebastian was no longer the monster she had originally assumed he was - and now... did she really want what she had before? The fancy life? Because after all, what exactly did she have now?
Freedom?

this is so short & choppy & bad ugh but I'm literally exhausted omg sebastian serafin -- Sebastian shook his head once as Liesel spoke. No, he had not always been a pirate. But how did he go about telling her the story of his past in the matter of a couple of sentences. He didn't want to overwhelm her any further. And honestly, he was not sure he could avoid it.
"I was born into a family of merchants. My mother died of tuberculosis when I was little, and my father decided that he wanted to join the navy. So he took Tobias and I on the ship along with him, but within a couple of months, we were attacked by pirates. They captured my father, as he was the captain of the ship. But then..he traded Tobias and I for his freedom," he explained, heaving a sigh once he finished. Sebastian did not desire to relive the past, but he wanted to give Liesel the truth. So ultimately, he decided to go with his instincts, even if they did not guide him the way he personally desired.
He nodded in response to Liesel's next question, and he stood once more, offering the young woman his arm. They would need to talk about this more, to figure out just how much their pasts intertwined. Perhaps it was more than even he originally imagined.
He would need to talk to Tobias, as it was likely that he would know much, much more.
