fish and other non-mammalian sea creatures. i couldn't tell you why, but even looking at photos of them has given me panic attacks before. my friend has multiple, very large aquariums in her home and whenever i visit she (very kindly) covers them with large sheets so i can sit in her living room ahaha

sometimes, but not always. like 50/50 i think? i think in scentences when i'm trying to analyse something, but a lot of the time my thoughts are less concrete. idk how to explain it bc my thoughts definitely have meaning like words and scentences do, and while i think in proper scentences when writing most of the time, there's no "translation" when i'm speaking or doing informal writing like journaling or texting. i guess the difference for me is that there's no sound, it's more like reading than speaking - though i realise now that i'm writing this that maybe those of you who have a constant internal monologue have that same voice "reading aloud" to you when you read!
i also am very poor at visualising. i can do it if i try to and focus on it, but if i'm not telling myself to picture something i just won't. when i do, i have to individually "draw" every detail. so it rarely happens, because how often do you have to picture something? i definitely don't visualise while reading, it slows me down so much to focus on it and i completely lose my emotional connection to the story.

i googled what pets were legal in sweden bc i honestly had no idea, all predators are illegal to be kept here except for cats, dogs, tame ferrets and, for some reason, badgers. i've not heard of a single person keeping a badger as a pet here or elsewhere, but apparantly it's a possibility!

^^^^ the βfriendsβ stage is a crucial part of a good EtL relationship imo. Yβall expect me to believe these characters went from despising each other to literal soulmates without any transitory period??? show me the process, cowards i'm also big on including a friendship stage! my personal favourite is friends -> enemies -> (friends again lol) -> lovers (with all three/four stages on page, tyvm, but enemies -> friends -> lovers is so, so good as well! just enemies-but-with-sexual-tension to lovers doesn't really work for me. at that point, rivals to lovers is much more interesting and offers the same tension imo

i don't really like the one-bed romance trope. i understand the appeal, and in specific cases i can really like it, but in reality i almost never do because of how i usually see it used. i'd feel so uncomfortable unexpectedly sharing a bed with the person i have secret feelings for (especially if i thought said feelings are unrequited), or with the person i saw as an enemy two weeks ago (and maybe still do).
magical weapons is one of my favourites! the more specific the thing they do, the better. percy jackson's riptide, wonder woman's lasso, excalibur etc

today not one, not two, but five seperate people thought it was appropriate to grab my wheelchair and "help" move me not only without asking me first but without so much as a word! one of them nearly tipped me out of it, if i hadn't had use of my legs (and there was no way for them to know that i do) i'd have hit the road chin first. leave me alone! maybe there's a reason i'm going slowly when the road is covered in 10cm deep ice-holes and a thick layer of gravel? it's so violating and you could knock half my teeth out

finally got to watching today, episode 3 was by far my favourite of the bunch. i'm not completely head over heels with the show but i'm enjoying myself and that's what matters. leagues better than the films, obviously. and to echo what everyone else is saying, the kid playing percy is perfectly cast.
if anything, i'm feeling the urge to reread. yet again.

armin -- sixth in line to the athierian throne --
Armin nodded. He didn't think much of it, it wasn't uncommon for young people from the countryside to make their to nearby cities and towns in search for a trade - or a spouse. He supposed Sirius had inadvertently found the latter.
The seamstess was easy to spot. In the window were stacks of colourful fabric, and a well dressed woman could be seen milling about inside, head in a book. He went to push the door open, but before he could Loui tapped his wrist in a silent signal he knew well - me first. The prince didn't argue, just stepped aside to let Loui open the door for them, ever the more careful of them.
"Welcome," the woman inside greeted before the door had even fully closed, looking up and closing the notebook she'd been hunched over. "How may I help you, sir?"
"My friend here needs new clothes." Min replied, to which the seamstress nodded gravely.
"So I see. I don't have much time this afternoon I'm afraid, I could make time for you sometime in the coming week."
"A fitting now isn't necessary." Armin knew he need only flash his ring for her to suddenly find time now, but he saw no need for that. Sirius didn't need perfectly tailored shirts, he needed trousers that wouldn't fall off and a shirt that wouldn't cause stares. "You wouldn't happen to have anything already made? Anything would be an improvement."
The woman huffed in amused agreement. "Let me see what I can find. Come." She held out a hand for Sirius to follow her deeper into the shop.
( sorry this took a while! the holidays have me running around like a headless chicken trying to get everything done lol )

we've always had real trees, the one artificial tree we ever bought lasted one year (and we ended up buying a real tree, too, that year lol). we buy them sometime in the week before christmas but don't decorate it until the night before christmas eve and then it stays up through epiphany. we have candle shaped lights in the tree, so only ever white lights - i don't know if they even sell them in colours, though i assume they must.
none of the ornaments that my parents had growing up or that i've bought myself since have a super special story or anything, but i loved these big, frosted glass baubles with glitter stars on them as a kid. now that i'm an adult, i think they're lowkey hideous but i'm still in love with them just because when i was six they were the most beautiful thing i'd ever seen. i got them from my parents as a gift a few years back. they don't usually go in the tree bc i'm the third generation to own them so there aren't that many left, i like to hang them in the window with my advent star instead

my objective ranking, clearly unaffected by things like nostalgia: swedish waffles = british pancakes > swedish pancakes > american pancakes > all other waffles i've tried I didnβt know there was more than one way to make pancakes and waffles since theyβre such simple foods :0 what are Swedish and British ones like?? when i first saw an american pancake, i just about combusted out of confusion lol so i get it. tbh beyond the lack of raising agents the differences are pretty small, it's mostly in how they're served/when they're eaten, but i feel strongly on the topic nonetheless.
both swedish and british pancakes are made without any raising agents, they're quite similar to crepes. british pancakes have more egg and less milk than swedish pancakes so are a little thicker and softer, but otherwise they're pretty similar. they're both eaten for dinner/dessert rather than breakfast, though i think that goes doubly for the swedes. swedish pancakes are traditionally eaten with jam and cream and a lot of the time it's served with soup - that's a classic school lunch! in england the default was always sugar and lemon which is delicious and i still prefer it. but savory fillings are common in both places as well, especially if you're not having anything else as part of your meal.
british waffles aren't that different from american waffles i don't think? i've only tried them a handful of times and never made them myself. but swedish waffles are very flat and crispy and generally split into heart shaped sections. there's two versions, one with egg and one without, but i think most people stick to the eggless kind. they're 100% a dessert, served with cream/ice cream and jam or fresh berries.

armin -- sixth in line to the athierian throne --
Somewhere along the way, Loui fell behind the other two men. Armin had been fourteen and Loui eighteen when the latter joined his personal guard, and it was only two years ago that Armin had ended the professional part of their relationship. It wasn't uncommon for them to slip into old habits, with Loui staying two steps behind and keeping a watchful eye on his friend. Sometimes Armin noticed, sometimes he didn't, but he didn't much mind regardless.
"Do you have family in the city?" Armin asked Sirius as they walked the icy streets. "You mentioned wanting to help them."

Armin let his hands be shaken for a few moments, then pulled his hands back. Strange man indeed. He couldn't help but smile, though, seeing how widely the other is grinning. "Loui, where's the place to go for clothes?" He trusted that his friend knew better than him on this matter. They may both live in the capital, but Loui grew up here in Rhovara. They were staying at his family home, even. Sure enough, Loui nodded. "My father's seamstress has her workshop by the courthouse, we can drop in and see if she has time for us." Armin turned to Sirius, raising an eyebrow in silent question.

Armin smiled and nodded. "Nice to meet you, Sirius. I'm Armin." He wondered if it was best to introduce himself properly. It was only a matter of time before Sirius found out who he was. It was the singular reason he was doing any of this in the first place. And while he was sure he had plenty to gain from keeping it a secret (though he couldn't quite decide what, exactly), he didn't like not knowing if the other knew or not. He'd much rather know that he knew than hope he didn't for some benefit he wasn't even sure existed. So, after a slightly longer pause than felt natural, he continued, "his royal highness, second born prince of Athieria. This is Loui, my host here, and he'll look happier soon." Maybe. Probably not.

"You're a very strange man." There was no derision in Armin's voice, only fascination. He was quiet for a moment, then nodded. "Okay, fine."
Loui scoffed. "This is not what I meant, Min." He tugged on Armin's arm to get his attention, immediately raising a brow upon making eye contact. "How do you even know him?" he hissed.
Armin shrugged. "However you think I know him, let's say you're right." Loui did not seem to like this answer, but Armin ignored his frown. He didn't need to be told that this was probably a bad idea. But honestly, what was the worst that could happen? At any point, if things seemed off, he could end the arrangement. "Before anything, you need shoes. And better fitting clothes. Oh, and I'd like to know your name." Loui looked like he wanted to fall suddenly dead.

Armin would have protested that he owed the stranger a life debt, but the last thing he wanted was for Loui to find out how they had met. Loui was his close friend, yes. He was also overprotective and terrible at keeping secrets, which was why Armin had fired him as head of his personal guard. He couldn't depend on Loui keeping quiet about the whole ordeal, and if his parents found out Armin wouldn't be let out of anyone's sight for far too long until they finally forgot about it. So he said nothing, only shook his head in disbelief.
The stranger leaned forward, eyes closed, and said as though it was the most natural thing to say, "I'd be happy to help." Armin nearly burst out laughing from the shock. "Why?" It wasn't so hard to believe that someone would offer. There was plenty to gain for most in marrying him, he wasn't stupid enough to not realise that. But for the same person to refuse thanks? Not to mention speak to him as though unaware of his standing? It was strange.

Armin was just about to protest that Sasha would not begrudge him for accepting a proposal from a prince when something hit the ground beside him. He turned, only to find the man who pulled him out of the water standing a short distance away, barefoot and wearing clothes that were far too big. He'd survived, then. Armin was relieved to see it.
Loui stepped to stand half in between them, clearly protective. Min put a hand on his friend's shoulder, reassuring. "It's okay," he said to them both. His friend relaxed slightly but did not move, so Armin stepped out to stand beside him. "I'm glad to see you again, I owe you a proper thank you." He ignored Loui's questioning look - he'd deal with that later.

armin -- sixth in line to the athierian throne --
Armin was in a bad mood. That morning, three days after he'd almost died and decided not to tell anyone, he'd recieved a letter from his brother. I've recieved our father's blessing to marry Annalise, it read. By next winter, she'll be my wife. I wish you'd have been here to celebrate the engagement with us, but I look forward to seeing you soon to share the news in person. Ever since, he'd been scowling.
It wasn't that he didn't like Annalise. She was beautiful and kind, a bright light in Ludvig's life. He couldn't have picked a better wife, and the whole family knew it. She'd grown up with them, her mother was an advisor to the King and they'd taken the same lessons since childhood. Armin loved her. He was happy for them both, truly. It was everything else that came with the engagement that had him wishing Ludvig could have waited a little longer. Still, here he was at the market, dutifully searching for small engagement gifts he could send back while waiting to go back to properly congratulate them.
"You're looking particularily grouchy today," Loui commented from beside him, his head tilted at his visiting friend as they walked between the stalls.
Armin rolled his eyes before returning to his glower. "Ludvig is engaged."
"So? I thought you'd be happy for him."
"So, as soon as I see my mother she'll ask why my little brother is getting married before me. I wish she'd just arrange a marriage for me, since she clearly cares more."
"It's not-"
"Not tradition, I know." Min sighed heavily. The first-born would rule, as would their children. They married for alliances, usually foreign royalty or domestic nobility. The second born would one day lead the military. They married for strength, they'd marry a solider to have someone to aid them when it was their responsibility to make decisions in matters of war. But the third born married for loyalty, they were supposed to marry a commoner to win the people's favour. He had to find his own partner. Only, every man and woman in Atheiria knew this about him. It didn't even feel like an effective plan when it was so well known.
"You just need to find someone. Anyone will do, right? It's not like you have to actually marry them just because you bring them to your parents - they'll take months to approve anything anyway. Just buy yourself some time."
Armin sighed again. He'd picked up a small jewlery box, finely made but lacking the luxuries he'd find in his home. Then again, this was not the place he's find precious stones. He turned it in his hands. "You marry me then."
Loui only laughed. "I don't think Sasha would appreciate that."

armin -- sixth in line to the athierian throne --
Armin stretches out in front of the oven. It's been two hours since he was pulled out of the harbour, and his hair is completely dried. This house must belong to a rich man, judging by the food constantly flowing from the stovetop into the dining room. He knows he could eat of it if he wanted, if the people here knew who he was he wouldn't even need to ask. But he doesn't want this to get back to his friends and, in turn, his family, so he allows the servants to treat him as simply a wealthy traveller, not a prince. Since they are treating him that way, he hasn't let it slip yet.
His clothes have dried as well - only his boots, stood in front of the oven, are still damp. There's nothing he can do about that, so he slips them on anyway. "Thank you for your hospitality," he says to the cook who brought him here. They've exchanged a few brief conversations, but she's been working while he dries up. He knows little about her other than that her name is Othelia. "I should be on my way, I was expected back hours ago."
"Of course. It was nice to meet you."
They exchange pleasantries, and before long Armin is back outside, walking back to Loui's and desperatly searching his mind for something to excuse his absence.

Armin should argue. No matter how cold one's upbringing, you wouldn't survive indefinitely in the water. But he knows there's no point - and the strange man doesn't seem cold. So after a few moments, he nods slowly. "Okay, then. Thank you for dragging me out." He pushes himself onto shaky legs, looks back at the man one last time, then walks slowly away from the water, toward someone who might be able to offer him some clothes and some warmth. Before long he is sitting in a kitchen, his expensive coat traded for one much thinner and older, but in dry clothes in front of a burning oven and with a bowl of soup in his hands. Most importantly, no one is yet the wiser that the prince almost drowned in the harbour.

Armin turns his head toward the sound of the voice, blinking in confusion. He sees a young man in the water, looking up at him curiously with pale eyes. "What are you still doing in the water, you'll freeze to death!" he says, ignoring the other's words. His teeth chatter as if to prove his point and he draws his knees up to his chest in a futile attempt to warm up. He can't stay here, chatting. They need to get in front of a fire, or at least into dry clothes, so he holds out a hand in a silent offer to pull the man out. "We need to get somewhere warm."

Armin knew how to swim, but apparantly he did not know how to float. In mere moments, his clothes are soaked through. Heavy with water they drag him down, and his scarf seems determined to make it as hard as possible to move. So he sinks as the cold of the water seeps into his bones and the light fades above him.
Until he's not sinking anymore. Someone lifts him through the water and carries him to safety. He barely feels himself moving, but he feels the cold air on his face and the thump of his back against wood. Something about the shock lodges something loose within him and he coughs violently, clearing his lungs of water as his body shakes.
He's soaked through. His hair is slicked to his scalp and though wool will keep you warm even while wet, not even his coat could be of any help when it's holding such a volume of ice cold water. He'll freeze to death if he stays here, but he doesn't know how to move yet, only how to cough. Someone needs to find him, if he asks for help and shows his ring-
His ring. Finally, he shoots upright. His hand flies to the chain around his neck - still there. He breathes a sigh of relief, coughs again. He'll be fine. He'll be fine.

armin -- sixth in line to the athierian throne --
The air was cold and dry - winter had made itself at home in Athieria. Wrapped in his wool coat and thick scarf, Armin knew he was unrecognisable. Not that most people would know his face here anyway, without someone to announce him he was annonymous this far from the capital. So he'd felt comfortable slipping out of Loui's home to go for a walk along the water. He'd be called home for the winter feasts soon, he wanted to take advantage of the time he had alone to think.
This time of day, the docks hadn't filled yet. He wandered aimlessly, very rarely making eyecontact with another creature. His mind, too, wandered aimlessly. It touched on his family, who he sometimes missed and sometimes hoped to not see for a long time, then on the winter which was shaping up to be especially cold. He sighed, turning to look out over the icy water.
Two children ran past him, laughing loudly. A few moments later, a large dog barrelled after them. It struck the side of his knee, hard enough for Armin to stumble but not hard enough to stop its destructive path. He attempted to right himself but found no purchase, only a patch of ice. Time seemed to slow, yet skip over itself. Before he could even open his mouth to yell, he was sinking, sinking, sinking into the water.

i'm also really curious about the teaching? i was "homeschooled" for a while but because of swedish laws that basically meant i went to a school that exclusively did distance teaching. i didn't have lessons but i got lesson plans, books, tests etc from liscenced teachers and had two weekly check-ins with each of them. was it similar for you or was it more individual?
also more from the perspective of a foreigner than a public schooler, who pays for the education? did your family get money from the government to pay for textbooks and the like or is it an out of pocket thing? whichever one it was, do you think it was a good or bad thing?
